Meet Your 2013 Board The future of JCI leadership was determined on Wednesday, November 21 at the second General Assembly of the 2012 JCI World Congress.

Members from countries all across the world gathered in the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Hotel Taipei to witness history as the 2013 JCI Leaders were chosen.

After attending the Vice Presidents Candidates Presentation and Caucus as well as the Executive Vice President and President Candidates Presentation and Caucus, National Presidents and Chief Delegates were educated and ready to cast their votes.

With loud cheers and chants from the JCI Italy delegation in support of Presidential Candidate Chiara Milani, many spectators waved flags and shouted for their National Organization’s candidate. Being elected as an international officer is an honor and special opportunity. Over the course of 2013, those elected will have the chance to see first hand how JCI members are creating positive change in their communities. They will be responsible for advancing the JCI Mission in their assigned countries and around the world.

Elections Committee Chairperson 2012 Executive Vice President for Europe John Weber took the stage to explain the voting process in addition to the rules and regulations placed on voters and delegates. The National Presidents then voted by acclamation to elect the full ballot of International Officers for 2013.

The 2013 JCI Board of Directors was presented and Leipzig, Germany, was announced the host city of the 2014 JCI World Congress. 2013 JCI President–Elect Chiara Milani took the oath of office and led the General Assembly in reciting the JCI Creed. The 2013 JCI Executive Vice Presidents and President also took their oath of office, publicly pledging their commitment and dedication to JCI for the next year and beyond. Heartfelt congratulations and excitement filled the air as JCI moves swiftly and strongly into 2013.

Change through Dynamic Debate JCI members from each Area formed teams of entertaining, smart public speakers to compete for the title of 2012 World Debating Champions.

Inspiring Impact The final Morning Show of the 2012 JCI World Congress kicked off yesterday with a look at how JCI members can make their projects sustainable to create lasting change.

After an enthusiastic exercise led by JCI Executive Director Arrey Obenson, JCI Morning Show hosts Bonnie Thomas and JCI Vice President Michael Rivera began the show with a discussion on why JCI members are agents of change and dedicated to action. She then introduced guest speaker Christopher Drasbek, Senior Adviser of Integrated Child Health for the Pan American Health Organization, who spoke about the day’s theme.

“Impact is a very broad topic, but it doesn’t need to be complicated,” said Drasbek. “Every time you take action and help other people, you’re making an impact.”

Special Adviser Drasbek then answered several questions from Vice President Rivera and members of the audience before encouraging everyone to join him at the JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop on sustainability, happening this morning at 10:30 in the Sky Lounge.

Two members from each area then competed for glory and a ten percent JCI Sales discount with the minute to win it game “Pop your Problems.” JCI members Steven Wilson from Scotland and Rob van der Steen from the Netherlands emerged victorious and claimed their gift cards. Guests who didn’t get to participate were given a chance to get up and dance with a 20 second samba break to promote the 2013 JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Today in Taipei challenged delegates to guess the day’s activities with visual clues and word scrambles. The final Deliver the Difference video contest winner from JCI Sostine in Latvia followed, highlighting ten years of outstanding service to their community.

The show closed out with the JCI Morning Show Raffle, where the prizes were on a whole new level. By placing their business cards in the raffle box, delegates had the opportunity to win one of two free 2013 JCI Area Conference registrations and one 2013 JCI World Congress registration. Delegates departed energized to take on the rest of the day at the 2012 JCI World Congress.

The teams at the JCI World Debating Championship in English, co-chaired by 2012 JCI Vice Presidents Samuel Moyo and Marvin Cuschieri, were equipped with extensive skills, while JCI Hong Kong and JCI Norway debated the topic “Corporations need to adopt serious Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) polices in order to succeed in the future.”

The JCI World Debating Championship in Spanish, chaired by 2012 JCI Vice Presidents Michael Rivera and Jorge Galmes Aguzzi, had two teams who debated with poise and confidence. Participating teams were JCI Colombia and JCI Paraguay, who discussed the same topics as the English competition. The topic was the same as English regarding CSR. Teams at the JCI World Debating Championship in French, cochaired by 2012 JCI Vice Presidents Darius Atsoo and Nikita Topanou, showed strong understanding of their varying points of view. JCI France, JCI Switzerland, JCI Monaco and JCI Canada participated.

The winning teams of all three Debating Championships will be announced on Thursday night at the JCI Awards Ceremony and Presidential Inauguration so don’t miss it!

Taking the Next Step of the JCI Active Citizen Framework Delegates engaged in constructive conversations to create concrete plans on addressing youth unemployment.

Focusing on the second stage of community development, education and economic empowerment, delegates gathered in the Sky Lounge once again to take a more in-depth look at JCI’s road map for change.

Yesterday’s workshop focused on the second step of the Active Citizen Framework – taking action.

After introducing themselves to their fellow members with a fun activity, the delegates were ready to start creating their projects.

Past JCI President Lars Hajslund started with an energetic introduction, explaining the day’s theme and the objectives of the workshop. Through a series of hands-on activities, including role playing, strategy development and brainstorming, participants developed specific ideas and actionable steps for a project in their community.

Education and economic empowerment are the engines that lift citizens and communities out of poverty. This step builds on the foundation of health and wellness to ensure the development of skills and opportunities related to economic growth, entrepreneurship, gender equality and employment.

Special guest speaker Steve Sparrow, International Vice President at AIESEC International, elaborated on this point by discussing how this area of action can affect a community.

With AIESEC being the world’s largest student organization, Sparrow talked about the importance of education and its direct ties to youth unemployment. Improving a community’s education can help improve the unemployment rate, allowing more people to have the qualifications to obtain a job.

Participants were then separated into groups to start to brainstorm the causes of youth unemployment. Members interacted with one another, completed worksheets and mapped out plans on flipcharts and whiteboards. After focusing on needs analysis in their project development Monday, delegates concentrated on taking action yesterday, establishing goals and designing plans with actionable steps to solve the root causes of youth unemployment.
