And the Award Goes to…

Delegates celebrated international accomplishments worldwide and strong commitment to sustainable impact at the high-spirited JCI Awards Ceremony.

In this Issue: JCI Awards General Assembly III: Appointments Spotlight JCI JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop Sustainability Today’s Trainings and Seminars Hosted by Training Director Esther ter Beek of JCI the Netherlands and 2012 JCI Vice President Takor Takor of JCI Cameroon, the JCI Awards Ceremony began with a large audience cheering and patiently awaiting the suspenseful announcement of the night ahead. Situated in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, the delegates were anxious and excited to see who would be honored for their service and dedication to the JCI Mission.

This year’s World Congress marks the very first time the new JCI Awards system has been used, and members were thrilled to be a part of the momentous occasion. In 2010, the JCI Awards Review Committee evaluated the state of JCI Awards and suggested ways to improve it and align the entire program with the JCI Mission and Vision. In 2012, those changes have gone into effect, and the online platform was also updated to be more user friendly. The revamped submission process and new categories are exciting changes as JCI moves forward solely focused on creating positive change. JCI Awards honors Local and National Organizations as well as those individuals who have shown tremendous passion and commitment to improving their communities.

This year’s ceremony started with a traditional Erhu performance by Kenny Wen. His Chinese violin proved to be a beautiful way to kick off an exciting night. After a traditional performance by Amis Harvest dance group, JCI President Bertolt Daems came to the stage to distribute the coveted JCI Awards trophies.

After hours of chanting and electric spirit from the delegates, the Awards Ceremony concluded with the inauguration of 2013 JCI President Elect Chiara Milani. She beamed with happiness as she waved to all the cheering members looking forward to 2013. JCI Secretary General Edson A. Kodama and the JCI Past Presidents conducted the ceremonial passing of the presidential chain. President Daems closed the ceremony with passionate farewell remarks and a video calling all members to lead by example and to continue turning their passion into action in 2013 and beyond.

Discussing the Future of JCI General Assembly III proved to be very informative as JCI prepares for an action-packed year of positive change.

National Presidents and Chief Delegates were eager to hear the exciting updates from the International Board as General Assembly III began. Starting first with the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), President Daems presented the current status of the process and what to look forward to in 2013. The SPC surveys sent out in September and October had a huge response from over 6,000 members around the world and will be extremely helpful for drafting the new strategic plan. President Daems encouraged National Presidents to motivate their members to take the survey as this is an important process for JCI. Strategic planning keeps the organization goal-oriented and striving for new ways to become the leading global network of young active citizens.

President Bertolt then moved to the dynamic topic of JCI Training. With the new JCI Training Policy Manual sent out before Congress, National Presidents patiently awaited their opportunity to hear more about the future of the program and development of new JCI Official Courses. While National Presidents had many questions, which lead to clarifying

The members engaged in a battle of knowledge and quick thinking.

Hosted by 2007 JCI President Scott Greenlee, the game show covered topics ranging from history to partnerships to 2013 JCI Events.

In between question rounds, an exciting video played, telling the audience more about the four vibrant host cites for the 2013 Area Conferences: Gwanju, Korea; St. Louis, USA; Monte Carlo, Monaco and Gaborone, Botswana. Right before the final bonus round, samba dancers energized the crowd with a traditional performance, dressed in brightly colored feathers.

The audience members from the Americas led the dancing and cheered as the performers invited everyone to join them in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next November. After five rounds of questions and five bonus questions, Team Europe won with 1700 points. They received their Spotlight JCI champion award at the JCI Awards Ceremony last night. amendments, the update was well received and members can expect to hear more on the exciting opportunities this program offers as the year begins.

Another positive announcement was the proposed amendments to the JCI Awards System. After numerous meetings with the 2012 JCI Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the President put forward an integrated awards system that combines the two structures, recognizing the best of the best while also recognizing impactful projects on the local and national levels. Using a white board, the President explained the changes and coinciding timeframes for the new Awards policy. National Organizations welcomed the system, which will start in 2013.

The meeting moved forward with 2013 JCI Officer Assignments and 2013 JCI Appointees. 2012 JCI Congress Director Chris Chen gave a report of the happenings so far in Taipei and thanked everyone for their enthusiastic support and participation during the adventurous week. He encouraged everyone to attend the Gala celebration this evening at the Expo Park for good food, great music and a fabulous night of vivacious entertainment. President Daems then made some heartfelt closing remarks concluding his final General Assembly as 2012 JCI President.

Honoring Young Entrepreneurs The JCI Creative Young Entrepreneurs Award (CYEA) ceremony recognized young active citizens who create positive change through creative thinking and innovation.

Her company also follows a green office program recycling waste, utilizing low energy machines and encouraging group transportation to and from work. *Due to personal circumstances, Katja Noponen was not be able to travel to Taipei, Taiwan to compete in the final interview, but is still recognized as a 2012 JCI CYEA Finalist.

James Yong of the Aulis Group, Malaysia Yong is Founder and Group Managing Director of the Aulis Group. The Aulis Group is made up of fifteen subsidiary companies specializing in recycling and rebuilding of used vehicles, vehicle inspection and automobile production. The Aulis Group demonstrates its commitment to CSR through their strict pollution control policies followed during all manufacturing processes. Their emissions testing machines also ensure the cars they produce will have minimal impact on the environment. James Yong is a member of JCI Tanjung Aru in Sabah, Malaysia.

The award is administered by JCI in partnership with Flanders District of Creativity, a Flemish nonprofit agency committed to increasing competition in the Flemish economy through creativity, entrepreneurship and further internationalization.

The 7th annual JCI CYEA ceremony took place yesterday with delegates eager to learn more about this year’s diverse competitors. Hosted by 2012 JCI Vice Presidents Ken Wong and Marvin Cuschieri, this international award honors and celebrates exceptional young entrepreneurs and their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Vice Presidents started the competition by introducing the CYEA finalists and allowing them five minutes to present about their businesses. After their presentation, there was a 15-minute period for questions and answers from the judges.

The winner, Paseka Lesolang, was announced at the JCI Awards Ceremony later that evening. Lesolang was very honored to receive this prestigious award and takes pride in his commitment to socially responsible business.

Sustaining the Change The final FrameWorkshop allowed delegates to develop ways to make their communities better for future generations to come.

Wei Yee Choi of Sunlight Taxi, Malaysia Choi is CEO of Sunlight Taxi, making her responsible for the overall operation of the company. Established in 1996, Sunlight Taxi performs three main businesses, taxi fleet operation, a 24-hour call center and a one-stop service center.

Choi has focused the company’s efforts on reducing time and costs for the customers while increasing income and productivity for the employees and drivers. Sunlight Taxi also follows many of the principles of the UN Global Compact including environmental sustainability and human rights within their day-to-day business practices.

Focusing on the final stage of community developmentsustainability - delegates congregated in the Sky Lounge for a final day of interactive discussion and brainstorming. Past JCI President Lars Hajslund started this workshop by recapping the first two workshops. He prepared the participants to focus on the future of their projects through emphasizing the importance of monitoring and evaluating results.

Paseka Lesolang of WHC, South Africa Lesolang serves as managing director at WHC, W for Water which is their substance focus, H for Hygiene representing the green economy they serve and C for Convenience describing the innovative technology and services provided. Lesolang oversees product innovation, team management and business development. WHC produces The Dynamic Lavatory and Digester, a water-saving toilet system that improves hygiene and sanitation, boosting environmental sustainability in any community where it is installed.

Senior Advisor Christopher Drasbek of the Pan American Health Organization spoke more about the concept of sustainability and how it relates to his work with healthcare in the Americas. JCI Ambassador and Senior Advisor of the UN Global Compact Fred Dubee acted as a sustainability consultant sharing his vast knowledge on the subject, explaining why monitoring needs is so important for creating lasting change.

Katja Noponen of Katja Noponen Ltd, Finland Noponen is founder and managing director of Katja Noponen Ltd., an occupational rehabilitation company that helps people find a new job through outplacement services and career counseling. They use individual rather than group coaching,

Participants then divided into groups by Area and started to think about a problem regarding environmental sustainability in their community, combating pollution or addressing climate change to ensure conservation. Then they presented their ideas. After three days of incredible ideas and exciting solutions, JCI members exited the workshop ready for their turn to make an impact in the world.
