Venues Most daytime activities of the 2013 JCI European Conference will take place at the Grimaldi Forum, the largest exhibition center in the country. It is located next to the beach in the city center. The Headquarters Hotel, the Senate Hotel as well as several evening and party venues are all located within walking distance of the beach and the Grimaldi Forum.

Monaco is an amazing city state in which most venues can be reached by foot, but delegates can travel around the principality with the local bus system during the day: free access will be granted to the public transport system for delegates upon presentation of their Conference badge. Full information on: www.cam.mc. The Grimaldi Forum can be accessed from almost all the major conference hotels using bus line No. 6, which runs approximately every eight minutes during the day.

The Conference Organizing Committee (COC) will provide transportation between the main hotels in Monaco and the official evening program venues.

Registration

Transportation

Delegates are required to register online before arriving in Monte Carlo. Upon arrival, registered delegates should pick up their name badges at the entrance of the Grimaldi Forum. The registration desk will be open from Tuesday to Saturday.

Air Travel Nice-Côte-d’Azur International Airport (NCE www.nice.aeroport.fr), located 22 kilometers from Monaco, links the Principality to the major cities of Europe. Comfortable and rapid travel is ensured by numerous direct flights.

Only delegates who have registered will be allowed to participate in Conference events. Admission will be restricted to delegates wearing Conference badges and holding event entry tickets, when necessary. Stamped gala tickets will be required to gain entry to the Presidential Gala on June 1.

Travel Visa Monaco is not a member of the European Union but is considered as part of the Schengen area for visa purposes.

There are no border controls when arriving from France.

Monaco requires individuals from some nations to obtain visas before entering the country – the Conference Organizing Committee has provided a list of countries that require a visa, which can be found at: www.jci-ec2013.com If you do need a visa, check with the Monaco embassy or consulate in your country as soon as possible for visa requirements, as the process can take several months.

Visas cannot be obtained upon arrival in Monaco.

The Monegasque Government also advises that, when traveling into Monaco, you may be asked to present one or more of the following documents: hotel reservation, return ticket or some form of proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your visit (e.g. cash, cheques or credit cards that are accepted in Monaco or an original financial support certificate initialed by the respective embassy or consulate).

Be sure to request a letter of invitation from the Conference Organizing Committee by filling in your request on the registration form, and don’t forget to provide your passport information, which is needed to complete the letter. Letters of invitation will only be issued after registration payment has been received and proof of a confirmed hotel booking has been sent to the COC.

JCI Destination: Monaco

COC members will be present to welcome delegates in both terminals before getting the bus to Monaco.

The COC will offer special shuttles from the airport to the major hotels of Monaco at a rate of 26€ roundtrip (approximate travel time 35 minute drive).

It is also possible to take a train from Nice Saint Augustin train station to Monaco Monte-Carlo station (20 minutes walk to the station from Terminal 1 and then 35 minutes by train).

Train Travel

It is possible to reach Monaco-Monte-Carlo train station with all international train lines, for example the “Ligure” which links Nice and Milan, the “Train Bleu” which links Paris and Ventimiglia, the T.G.V. (high-speed train) between Nice and Paris (approximate journey time 5.5 hours).

Some other trains terminate at Nice Ville (the central train station of Nice) and you will have to take a local connecting train to the Principality (about 25 minutes).

Car Travel

If you are planning to arrive by car, the COC offers discount parking tickets at 10€ per day in the public underground car parks next to the Grimaldi Forum Conference Centre, the Meridien Beach Plaza Headquaters Hotel and the Monte-Carlo Bay Senators Headquarters Hotel.

Internet Access Delegates will have wi-fi internet access in the Grimaldi Forum and in the various delegate hotels in Monaco (internet connection is included in the room price).

About Monte Carlo, Monaco Monaco, officially the Principality of Monaco (French: Principauté de Monaco), is a small sovereign city-state located in South Western Europe on the northern central coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded on three sides by its neighbor, France, and its center is about 16 km (9.9 mi) from Italy. Its area is 2.02 km2 (0.78 sq mi) with a population of 35,000.

Monaco is the name of the country and its capital (and only) city. Foreigners make up the majority of the population at approximately 81%.

Monaco is a constitutional monarchy and principality, with HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco as the head of state.

The House of Grimaldi has ruled Monaco since 1297, and the state’s sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. Despite Monaco being independent, its national defense is the responsibility of France.

Monte-Carlo is one of several neighborhoods of Monaco, the location of the world-famous Casino, luxury boutiques and hotels.

Language Although French is the official language of Monaco, English and Italian are very widely-spoken due to the strong presence of international communities from 122 different nationalities. The official language of the 2013 JCI European Conference is English, no translation into other languages will be provided.

Health Check with your local health care professional about which vaccinations to receive before visiting Monaco.

Weather Monaco has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate which is influenced by the oceanic climate and the humid subtropical climate.

As a result, it has warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Cool and rainy interludes can interrupt the dry summer season, the average length of which is also shorter. Summer afternoons are infrequently hot (indeed, temperatures over 30 °C are rare) as the atmosphere is temperate by constant sea breezes. On the other hand, the nights are very mild, this being due to the fairly high temperature of the sea in the summer. Generally, temperatures do not drop below 20 °C in this season.

In winter, frosts and snowfalls are extremely rare, generally occurring once or twice every ten years.

The average daytime temperature at the time of the 2013 European Conference, in late spring, will be around 22°C, the weather is generally sunny even though there can be occasional rainy days. The average sea temperature is 20°C so it is possible to go swimming.

Electricity In Monaco, electric sockets are 220V 50Hz and use a two-pin outlet (Type E), which will fit a Type E or Type C plug.

Time Zone

The Principality of Monaco is a very cosmopolitan country, proud of its Monegasque culture (which is close to Liguria in Italy) and very distinct from neighboring France.

Monaco time is CEST – Central European Summer Time (or GMT + 2)

Currency The euro is the currency used in Monaco. One euro consists of 100 euro cents. We would advise you to withdraw funds from automatic teller machines (ATMs) which you can find all over Monaco, as few banks in Monaco offer money changing services.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Monaco, with Visa being the most widely accepted, followed by Eurocard and MasterCard. American Express and Diners Club are not as widely accepted in Monaco. Keep photocopies of all credit cards and documents in case of theft or loss.

Notify your bank of your international travel plans before you leave to ensure you can use your card abroad.

Many vending machines (ticket, drink, cigarette, etc.) do not accept credit card payment, so keep a reasonable supply of cash on hand to keep your travel, food and beverage options open.

Attire in Monaco

Much of southern Europe is very fashion conscious, and Monte-Carlo is no different. “Smart casual” style consists of business casual trousers, collared shirts and blazers for men and trouser suits for women. Darker colors are favored over brighter shades. While most styles of clothing are acceptable, Europeans tend to take dining and entertainment as a relatively formal occasion. Please note that it is forbidden for men to walk around Monaco topless or in sleeveless tops, especially around the Old Town, this rule is strictly enforced by the Monegasque police.

A significant portion of the population is Roman Catholic (the State religion, which permeates into social laws and regulations), all major religions are present in the country and the residents are tolerant of other cultures and beliefs. Traditional greetings in Monaco are an exchange of handshakes and business cards. Friends may touch cheeks and kiss the air, alternating cheeks twice.

Saturday, June 1, 2013 A JCI European Conference is all about creating an impact in the community. In Monte Carlo, this will be done with the organization of a fundraising project founded 10 years ago by JCI Monaco, the No Finish Line. The idea is simple: to run or walk along a 800 m long circuit set in the beautiful setting around the Grimaldi Forum esplanade.

The more kilometers you walk or run, the more money will go to charity. For this event, all the proceeds will go to Fight Aids Monaco, presented by HSH Princess Stéphanie of Moanco. www.fightaidsmonaco.com This event will take place on Saturday, June 1, from 12:00 - 17:00. The Exotic Garden of Monaco

The Prince’s Palace of Monaco, located in the heart of the Old Town of Monaco, is the official residence for HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history, it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers. Since the end of the 13th century, it has been the stronghold and home of the Grimaldi family who first captured it in 1297. You can visit the courtyard and the State rooms of the Palace every day and also watch the changing of the guard at 11:50 on the Palace Square.

The Exotic Garden of Monaco has managed to stay unique in its genre since it opened to the public in 1933. It brings together a wide variety of plants known as ‘succulents’ in outstanding open-air surroundings.

Designed by Charles Garnier, the legendary architect who also built the majestic Paris Opera, the Monte-Carlo Casino was dedicated from the outset to the art of gaming.

With its frescoes in the style of Boucher, its bas-reliefs, sculptures and caryatids, and an astonishing gold and marble atrium, the architecture exerts an unforgettable emotional impact.

Built in 1863 in the Principality of Monaco, overlooking the Mediterranean, this architectural masterpiece has been the scene of Monte Carlo’s finest hours, spawned prestigious resorts and provided gaming with its most elegant setting.

The Casino is also home to the Monte Carlo Opera, which host world-renowned productions.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco Built on the side of the mythical Rock of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum has been watching over the oceans for more than a century. Founded by HSH Prince Albert I of Monaco, great grandfather of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, it was designed as a Palace entirely dedicated to Art and Science.

From the aquariums to the collections of Natural History, including the Shark Lagoon and the Turtle’s Island situated on the panoramic terrace, the Museum offers visitors a unique learning experience to know, love and protect the oceans.

From the ornamental facades to the adornments in the salons, everything in the Museum’s architecture evokes the marine world. Since its inauguration on March 29, 1910 and with more than 6,000 m open to the public, this Temple of the Sea has positioned itself as an international point of reference. Crowned 85 meters above the sea, it is an invitation to a wonderful dive and discovery of more than 6,000 specimens. It provides a place of exchange and culture, which highlights experiences concerning the protection of the oceans, the common heritage of mankind.

The presence of prehistoric man in the vicinity of this cave has been proved by the remains of bones of the animals that provided them with food. These remains also confirm the climatic variations which have taken place in the last 250,000 years.

The Casino of Monte-Carlo

The visit to the cave, included in the entry ticket for the Exotic Garden, is conducted by specialists. It takes place between 98 m and 40 m (about 300 steps).

The cavity plunges almost to sea level and is regularly used by local potholers.

In the Exotic Garden, 100 m above sea-level, at the foot of the cliff, there is an underground cavity adapted for visits.

(Its name comes from the presence of a small astronomical observatory). The limestone rock, hollowed out by water high in carbon dioxide, is dotted with caverns decorated with concretions with evocative names, which include stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, columns, spaghetti.
