This year is particularly exciting as we launch the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement: Celebrating 100 Years of Impact. The Congress Organizing Committee and JCI World Headquarters team have been hard at work developing a spectacular program of exciting events, workshops and seminars for this year’s JCI World Congress. You will have opportunities to develop your skills as an active citizen, connect with dynamic members and partners from all over the world, learn new ways to create impact and celebrate all that we have accomplished in 2014.

Venues Most of the events at the 2014 JCI World Congress will take place at the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) like the daytime events, Opening Ceremony, JCI Awards Ceremony featuring the JCI TOYP Honorees, the Presidential Inauguration, 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement Kick Off and Farewell Ball.

Explore Leipzig Christmas Market Leipzig Christmas market dating all the way back to 1458, is set in the fascinating historical scenery of the Leipzig city centre. With more than 250 twinkling stalls placed perfectly in the historic city center, Leipzig Christmas market is not only one of the oldest but also one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany. Delegates can marvel at Christmas tree as high as 20 meters and experience a variety of festive indulgences like numerous culinary delights or exploring the city’s traditional medieval market.

St. Thomas Church The St. Thomas Church is one of two houses of worship in Leipzig’s city center. Home of the St. Thomas Boys Choir and a place of musical creativity, it is also the final resting place of the famous St. Thomas Cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, visitors from all over the world come to Leipzig to observe church services in the St. Thomas Church, hear the St. Thomas Boys Choir, or to enjoy concerts and organ music performances.

• November 28 from 9:00 to 12:00 Only delegates who register will be allowed to participate in Congress events. Admission will be restricted to delegates wearing Congress badges and holding event entry tickets, when necessary.

Visa Germany requires individuals from some nations to obtain visas before entering the country.

Visit www.auswaertiges-amt.de to determine whether or not you need to apply for a visa before departing for Leipzig. Apply early to ensure that your visa request is processed in time for your travel, as this can sometimes take weeks or even months for approval.

Visas cannot be obtained upon arrival in Germany.

Even if a visa is not required for travel, ensure that you bring your passport and that it is valid for at least 90 days following your departure date. Customs officials may also request a hotel reservation, return airfare ticket or proof of financial stability. Make sure your passport has blank Visa pages, as Germany will apply a stamp and requires sufficient free space on passport pages.

Health Check with your health care professional about which vaccinations to receive before traveling to Germany. Although no special immunizations or medications are necessary to enter Germany, the US Center for Disease Control recommends that all travelers stay up-to-date on all routine vaccinations and receive Hepatitis A and B vaccinations as late as eight weeks prior to travel.

Airport Traveling by air, delegates will arrive at the Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) or the Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ). Hotels are accessible from these airports by train, bus or taxi, or delegates can rent a car to use during their stay.

Transportation From Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) If traveling from the Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL), the best form of transportation is taking a train to Leipzig. The easiest way to get to the train station from the Berlin Tegel Airport is by bus. Busses can be found outside Terminal A and B and they run every 10 minutes.

Trains depart every hour from Berlin and if you opt for the fast ICE (Intercity-Express) train, you’ll be in Leipzig in approximately 70 minutes. Tickets usually cost about €40, but if you book early enough and check the website of the German Railway (www.bahn.com), you can often find special deals. The ICE train will stop at Leipzig Hbf, which is situated directly beside the Westin Leipzig the JCI WC HQ Hotel.

From Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) If traveling from the Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), delegates can either take a train or a taxi. Leipzig/Halle railway station is located directly beneath the passenger terminal and the S-Bahn connects directly to Leipzig. This train runs approximately every 30 minutes and costs €5.

Taxis are available directly outside the A and B terminals and will cost approximately €30.

Delegates who would like to rent their own transportation can find car rental locations on the north side of the arrival areas at both terminals.

The tram network is structured like a star with a circle in the center. Tramlines generally lead from the outskirts into the city, which they half-circle on the center ring, and continue to someplace else in the outskirts. Delegates can take several trams from the city where most of the hotels are to the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), which is located at the Leipzig Messe stop.

By Taxi Taxis in Leipzig are relatively expensive. Therefore, many people only use them in special situations. Prices are regulated and taxis are charged a basic price plus a charge per kilometer. All taxis have a taximeter, which runs during the entire journey and registers the price at the end.

By Tram The primary means of public transport in Leipzig is the tram.

LVB operates trams and buses in Leipzig. Most lines run every 10 minutes during the day and at least hourly at night.

After 20:00, you must enter through the driver’s door and show or purchase your ticket.

All Congress delegates will receive a LVB pass with their registration that will be valid for use during the Congress.

The pass will be printed on the back of their Congress badge, and must be shown to the driver upon entering the bus or tram.

Explore Leipzig Continued Bach-Archiv The Bach-Archiv Leipzig is an institution for the documentation and research of the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Based in Leipzig, the city where Bach lived from 1723 until his death, the Archiv is recognized by the German government as a “cultural beacon” of national importance.

St. Nicholas Church The St. Nicholas church was founded in about 1165 and was also a symbol of the beginning of the peaceful revolution in 1989. This began when a parish priest, Christian Fuehrer, opened up a dialogue at the St. Nicholas Church with prayers for peace each Monday. Starting September 4, 1989 and continuing on, the peace prayers resulted in Monday Demonstrations, with thousands of people holding candles and showing banners to promote peace.

About Leipzig, Germany Language German is the official language spoken in Germany and some people may speak some English as well. The official language of 2014 JCI World Congress is English. Simultaneous interpretation in the official JCI languages will be offered at certain events.

Electricity Power outlets or sockets in Germany have two prong slots with a current of 220 volts and a frequency of 50 Hz. The plug type C is most commonly used. Delegates planning to bring electronic devices should invest in adaptors to ensure compatibility with local power supply.

Monument to the Battle of the Nation The 300-foot high Monument to the Battle of the Nation is one of the largest monuments in Europe. The epic attraction captures the battle of Leipzig in the Napoleonic Wars in 1813, which was a defeat for the French. For a great view, visitors can climb the 364 steps of the monument.

Leipzig Botanical Garden The Botanical Garden, located right next to Leipzig’s University, has been around since the 16th century.

It is the oldest botanical garden in Germany and among the oldest in the world. The Botanical Garden Leipzig is home to 7,000 species of plant life from all over the world and admission is free.

Weather Germany is in an oceanic climate, so this means that temperatures are cooler and the city sees four distinct seasons. The average temperature in November is around 45°F (5°C). November is the beginning of winter in Germany. There will be some outdoor activities for delegates to enjoy so come prepared with clothing for colder weather, but most of the attractions in Leipzig will be located inside.

Luther Way

Currency

The Luther Way in Saxony is an invitation to visit the places of work of Martin Luther and other Reformers. The path leads to cities where the Reformation had gained a foothold, for example in Leipzig, where in 1519, the famous Leipzig disputation had been held. In 1539, Luther delivered the celebratory sermon in St. Thomas church, in Leipzig, to ring in the Reformation.

Germany’s unit of currency is the Euro (€).

Foreign currencies can be exchanged at government-designated banks and hotels.

Receipts are given when currency is exchanged and must be presented in order to exchange unused Euros before departure.

Cash is Germany’s main form of currency.

Many businesses do not accept credit cards.

Traveler’s checks are also accepted in Germany.

Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are easy to find at most convenience and department stores and almost all ATMs can display information in English as well as German.

Gratuity and Value Added Tax

Do’s and Don’ts of Leipzig

Service and Value Added Tax (VAT) are included in the menu price in restaurants and bars in Leipzig. It is typical to “round up” the total amount to some more-or-less round figure. A rule of thumb is to add 10%, generally ending with a full Euro amount. Tipping isn’t necessary for taxis, but most round the fare to the nearest Euro. It is encouraged to not tip more than 10%.

As with any new city and culture, being knowledgeable and respectful of the customs is key to enjoying your trip safely.

Time Zone In November, the Germany Standard Time will be CET (Central European Time), which is UTC +1 hours.

DO’s • Make a copy of your passport and carry it with you, while keeping your actual passport locked up in the safe at the hotel.

• Shake hands when you’re introduced to someone.

• Try to use cash rather than credit cards. Many restaurants do not accept credit cards.

DON’Ts • Be late. Punctuality is very important in Germany.

Be mindful of your surroundings and enjoy the all the exciting things to do in historic Leipzig!

Cultural Notes Interactions in Germany are a formal process. A traditional German greeting is a quick firm handshake. When entering a room, be sure to shake hands with everyone individually, including children. When Germans speak, they tend to be polite and straightforward. There is not much small talk in these interactions.

Titles are also very important and denote respect in Germany.

It is recommended to use a person’s title and their surname until invited to use their first name. Upon introduction, Germans use Herr (for males) or Frau (for females) and then the person’s title and their surname.

Punctuality is very important to Germans and they may take offense when invited guests are even a few minutes late for appointments. It is appropriate to be five to 10 minutes early for important appointments and to call the people if the guest cannot arrive on time.

Attire in Leipzig German clothing is typically quite simple and stylish.

In conducting business, men should wear dark suits and women should wear dark slacks with a simple blouse.

Since delegates will be there during the winter in Germany, it is recommended to dress for colder weather.
