LETTER from the PUBLISHER We’re off to a great start this autumn. “A Rolls With Your House?” That was the recent headline in The New York Times, announcing the September opening of the newest office of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes and Estates — inside the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Long Islands 9,200 square foot showroom in Jericho. Under the banner, “Shawn Elliott Elite” this unique location showcases $5 million-plus homes and offers the opportunity to check out a neighborhood, or a dreamy mansion, in a Rolls. It is believed to be the first residential real estate office inside a car dealership in the world. In this issue, we dive behind the headline to tell the story behind our latest venture, including the YouTube-style multimedia videos Zach Elliott creates for each high-end listing, using drones for great aerial shots. Watching the video in the plush 8-seat movie theater at the Rolls-Royce dealership is quite an experience! We also talk with Larry Scott, the party king known for creating extraordinary events and celebrations. He inspired us to put together a collection of great bling for your home bar. On the builder front, we meet developer Stewart Senter, whose latest venture is building the new Lands End in Sands Point, a Gatsby-worthy private culde-sac on the Long Island Sound with five $12-$15 million homes. We spend a day in East Hampton, exploring the shops, beaches, art and architecture. While out east, we stop by the home of builder Joe Farrell, master of Hamptons-style, whose signature shingle homes are popping up all over the East End. His own 30,000 square foot showplace, Sandcastle, is a dreamy nine-bedroom mansion on 11 Bridgehampton acres, with a 2800 square foot master suite, a spa, a two-lane bowling alley, a rock climbing wall, a resort-worthy pool area and a garage with room for a dozen cars. We also look at furniture trends with a profile of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, whose new Manhasset modern furniture gallery, part of an expansion nationwide, opened during their year-long 25th anniversary celebration. We also meet Chris Plotkin, the savvy Furniture Plus owner whose eye for interior design is matched by a keen business acumen. In the lifestyle department, we check out rowing, the calorie-burning, stayin-shape fitness craze and bring you the latest trends in high-fashion designer jewelry. Thinking about taking a deluxe vacation or just jetting to an island for the weekend? Read our story on Wheels Up, the latest and greatest in private aviation. There’s something for everyone in our 16th issue. Happy reading.

DESIGNER SPACES
MITCHELL GOLD & BOB WILLIAMS CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CREATING BEAUTY, COMFORT AND STYLE By LINDA SASLOW
Design mavens Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams are in the midst of a year-long 25th anniversary celebration of their internationally acclaimed home furnishings company. It’s been a non-stop whirlwind for the partners, which included opening seven new stores over the past 18 months, new product lines, a Silver Anniversary ad campaign and the publication of their third coffee-table book, “Who We Are.” Not to mention charity events, TV appearances and interviews. “To say we are excited about this silver anniversary is an understatement,” says Mitchell. “When we started, we wanted to have a small company that only did business with nice people. We never imagined that our baby would be so grown-up like this, but here we are, all these years later, with 750 employees and stores all over the country. It’s so much better than we ever imagined.” For Mitchell, now 63, an interest in furnishings dates back to his childhood, when he developed an appreciation for the modern furniture style in his parents’ New Jersey home and he learned to recognize good taste. After getting a Bachelor’s degree, Mitchell was hired by Bloomingdale’s as an assistant buyer in domestics and quickly graduated to buyer, group manager and divisional merchandise manager. Bob, 53, grew up in Texas, but followed his interest in design to New York, where he went to Parsons School
of Design and got his first job at Seventeen magazine. When Mitchell and Bob first met in New York and began a romantic relationship, their common interests and shared passion led to conversations about starting a business together. Taking a giant leap of faith, they both quit their jobs and moved to North Carolina, where they created their furniture company—manufacturing and selling upholstered dining room chairs to retailers. “In 1989, dining rooms were changing,” Mitchell remembers. “We felt that upholstered chairs would
encourage people to enjoy dining when they could sit comfortably and relax longer.” Faster than they ever expected, the business took off. As customers began asking, “Can you make living room chairs? Sofas? Sleepers?” The duo quickly expanded their line to other furniture, lighting, rugs, accessories, bed linens and artwork—with showrooms that created the look of a finished room. Many retailers were so impressed by the look of these showrooms, they asked if Mitchell and Bob could duplicate them within the retail store—creating a “shop in a shop.” Bob recalls, “As we saw how successful they were, we wanted better control over our brand and decided to open our own store, where we agreed that we’d only have items that we’d have in our own homes.” The first signature Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams store opened eight years ago in Washington D.C., followed by others in Manhattan, Los Angeles, San Juan, Toronto and Mexico City. Today, there are 21 stores -- including the first Long Island store that opened last spring in Manhasset -- along with a state-of-the-art 600,000 square foot factory in Taylorsville, North Carolina. From an initial investment of $60,000, the company grew to $125 million in annual sales last year. And, while the romantic relationship between Mitchell and Bob didn’t last -- each has since met his long-term mate -- they remained business partners and, as they agree enthusiastically, best friends. Their furniture brand, also sold in national chains like Pottery Barn, Bloomingdale’s, William Sonoma and Restoration Hardware, is best known for its comfort, style and value.
20 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
Bob explains, “Our goal is to make the pieces inviting, with the same warm feeling you’d get at grandma’s as a kid and for customers to still be in love with their pieces a decade from now.” This spring, Mitchell and Bob were enthusiastic about new additions in upholstery, lighting and accessories, many pieces with a touch of metallic sparkle to celebrate their silver anniversary. Besides devoting their energies to creating an exciting product line, Mitchell and Bob dedicate themselves to taking care of their employees. The company’s innovative programs include Lulu’s Childhood Enrichment Center, which provides on-site day care at the North Carolina factory, Café Lulu, a health-conscious gourmet café, a fitness center, annual health fair and college scholarships for deserving kids of employees. (Lulu, the company mascot, was their beloved English bulldog, now departed.) Mitchell and Bob also are lauded for their interest in encouraging environmental responsibility, for philanthropic endeavors helping families with life-challenging illnesses and serving as gay rights advocates. In honor of their 25th anniversary, their third decorating book, “Who We Are,” shares 25 of the company’s mantras for success in design, business and life, with each mantra expanded into a chapter. The coffee-table book, published by Assouline, offers a fun, imaginative and visual take on life, with chapters including “We Don’t Like Mean People,” “We Love Pets” and “We Believe in Enriching the Lives of Our Children.” “‘Who We Are’ tells the tale of the company, while encouraging readers to make their own lives a more comfortable place,” Mitchell explains. “It’s like an inspirational scrapbook of our last 25 years.” Exhilarating days lie ahead for Mitchell and Bob, with plans to open more stores and develop new products to bring beauty, comfort and style to others. There seems to be no stopping this dynamic duo! SE

LUXURY ENTERTAINING
THE LIFE OF THE PARTY
LARRY SCOTT CREATES EXTRAORDINARY CELEBRATIONS THAT IMPRESS AND ENTERTAIN. By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO
Events planned and produced by Lawrence Scott Events are far from run-of-the-mill. Imagination, creativity and a strong sense of whimsy characterize the opulent yet playful celebrations. Larry Scott, the company’s founder and creative director, describes his signature style as “Philippe Starck meets Marie Antoinette. It’s so extreme and edgy, but classy.” He notes everything used in
24 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 10 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
his parties is authentic, like the Murano lamps, dishes by Roberto Cavalli, Hermes or Versace and more. “I invest in these things because it’s not just about flowers, linens and centerpieces. It’s about an atmosphere.” He describes his productions as “timeless. I think that sets me apart from most other planners.” Whether he and his team incorporate the soft glitter of extensive rows of flickering can-
dles, the shimmer of multicolored lights on the walls and floors, or the stark white palette of designer furniture to create an elegant ambience, the attention to detail always delights clients in these one-of-a-kind celebrations. “There are no rules,” Larry comments. “When you walk into one of my parties, you feel something first and then your eyes start to focus in on the details, but it’s never what you’re expecting.”
Lawrence Scott Gottesman, a.k.a. Larry Scott, grew up in Hicksville, the fourth of five children. His parents owned multiple luncheonettes in Manhattan. After college in 1989 he opened Larry and the Redhead, a trendy, popular restaurant in Great Neck. “It was a very eclectic place and the start of my direction in branding myself,” he comments. “It was a classy, fun place to hang out.” The New York Times called the restaurant a place where “extravagance holds sway.” Larry saw it as a way to segue into his events business, which he operated out of the venue’s basement. Five years later, when his catering and events business started to thrive, he felt it was time to bid farewell to the restaurant. Since then, his events business more than took off. Larry Scott is now the go-to person for the most elaborate, dramatic parties. ”We do everything from a Sweet Sixteen to a 50th birthday party, staged in places from country clubs to clients’ homes, mansions like Hempstead House in Sands Point Preserve or Oheka Castle,” he says. His clients hail from the Hamptons, other parts of Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester and beyond. His roster reads like a Who’s Who of the rich and famous. “In one week,” he explains, “we could do a fundraiser with Condoleezza Rice and then two days later, I’m at Judge Judy’s apartment doing a gay wedding and then a few days later, I’m doing a wedding for the owner of the New York Mets.” He’s engaged performers from Kelly Clarkson to Andrea Bocelli, Alicia Keys, Cyndi Lauper and Diana Ross to Tony Bennett and many other celebrities for his soirees. The cost of these celebrations can easily run into half a million or a million dollars, depending on the size of the party and its theme. One essential element of Larry’s fetes is what he calls “invasions.” “They’re like a burst of adrenaline,” he explains. “After the main course, we’ll stage some sort of theatrical invasion into the room. Instead of two people coming in, I’ll parade out 15 or 20 of my waiters at the same time.” These often involve elaborate costumes that might include

Swarovski crystal masks. Recalling some of his most memorable parties, Larry recalls a wedding for 300 in Sands Point. “I shouldn’t be mentioning names,” he says. “We built a compound around the home and the whole party was decorated with aubergine fabric and different chandeliers.” As the wedding cake was cut, fireworks filled the sky with a rainbow of colors and an after-hours party ensued. “It was like Miami: a magnificent journey from the ridiculous to the sublime.” He also recalls a wedding for a well-known celebrity whose home faces Long Island Sound. “The tent was open and part of it was raised 12 feet off the ground, so it was almost like an infinity tent,” he explains. “You looked straight across and right into the water. We took the plants they had in their outside landscape and brought those same viburnum bushes and more inside, so you didn’t know if you were inside or outside, and there were over 20 chandeliers hanging from the tent.” When asked what advice he’d give to those who want to make their own parties special, Larry explains the bar should be a focal point. “I always build big bars. It’s the community area of the party.” He said it shouldn’t take two hours for people to feel comfortable and the bar accomplishes this immediately. Food is of the utmost importance as well. “Give them great food, plenty during cocktails and some fantastic dessert, maybe a little junk food at the end and in between. No one wants a roll. They want tapas, baby mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes, maybe a little touch of tuna tartare on the table. Then give them one great, identifiable main course whether it’s surf and turf, veal chops or the like.” Larry’s passion for his profession shines through his charismatic personality. “They say everybody is born with a gift,” he comments. “And my gift is creating this magic. I don’t chase money. I do what I love.” Lawrence Scott Events, 35 Bethpage Road, Hicksville, NY, (516) 933-7535, www.lawrencescottevents.com. SE -

LUXURY PARTNERSHIP
ROLLS-ROYCE AND SHAWN ELLIOTT ELITE FORM A TEAM By M.C. SUSSMAN
Antoine Dominic, Michael Todd, Shawn Elliott and Zach Elliott
Fancy cars and fancy houses go together. Under Shawn Elliott’s new “Elite” division, shoppers for ultra-luxury cars can view sumptuous five million dollar-plus listings at a new office inside the sprawling, four-year-old, 9,200 square foot four-yearold Rolls-Royce of Long Island dealership in Jericho, which also includes Bentley and Lamborghini showrooms. The new Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates location, opened September 1, is believed to be the first residential real estate office inside a car dealership in the world. Many of Shawn’s top-tier listings are car collector’s dream homes with expansive garages. If a mansion sparks their interest, they can tour the neighborhood and check 30 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
it out in a Rolls-Royce. Later, they can outfit the garage with super high end cars like a cherry red $346,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith, a $231,000 white Bentley convertible with a black interior or a $447,000 black Phantom Rolls-Royce. The “strategic alliance” between RollsRoyce and Shawn Elliott grew out of doing events together. Antoine Dominic, dealer principal of Rolls-Royce of Long Island and the Bespoke Motor Group helps Shawn soup up the image of wealth and splendor at red carpet parties at private showings at multi-million dollar listings with coveted Rolls-Royce Drophead coupes in the driveway. Shawn explains it this way: “You put a Rolls-Royce in front of home and it creates
more excitement for a home. The perception is the home is worth more.” If a home is more contemporary, he elects to use a Lamborghini. Sometimes, the car sells first. At a house party in Brookville, a guest bought a $200,000 red Ferrari California off the motor court, Shawn recalls. The dealership office “also is about having fun” while finding “a home for their new car,” Elliott says. Clients can peruse “the most beautiful homes in the world while they check out the most beautiful cars in the world,” Shawn says. Images of mansion listings appear on a 75-inch flat screen TV in the new glass-enclosed office, located behind a row of
Bentleys. Multimedia videos of estates also are screened in the auto dealership’s plush eight-seat movie theater. Zach Elliott says the partnership “helps to tell the luxury story. When we use our aerial drone photography to showcase an estate for Shawn Elliott, we make sure there’s a Bentley rolling through the iron gated driveway.” The theater was set up by Robert Kaufman, owner of Audio Command Systems, a home theater and technology company in Westbury, who said he has been using the dealership location for the past three to four years to sell high-end audio and video equipment and home theaters to the fancy car buy-

ers, who stop in to learn about the history of Rolls-Royce or watch racing films. Antoine says the strategic alliance with Shawn is a “natural fit” that will provide introductions and help him reach a wider audience. “High-end real estate and luxury vehicles are very close.” The top brand cars, which Antoine describes as “garage candy” become “part of the artwork.” The luxury car buyers “have to have the right car to go with the right house,” Antoine says. Both the cars and the home are “masterpieces.” The purchase is often an “emotional decision,” Antoine says. Since the dealership opened four years ago, growth has been in the double digits. Commanding prices that rival smaller houses, Shawn say super high end cars are “impulse items” and “ almost like candy.” The market “for $250,000 cars and $5 million houses is the same,” Shawn says, planning to share mailing lists and information with Rolls-Royce of Long Island. “The audience that is here is targeted for us.” The new real estate setup adds another element of “white glove service” for wealthy in-
ternational buyers scouring the Gold Coast for special homes. A week of home and car shopping starts with a pickup -- in style -- at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Shawn Elliott Elite’s roster of luxury homes and estates priced at more than $5 million dollars, lists more than two dozen homes, including a $14,900,000 home in Old Westbury with a shark tank, an 11,000 square foot Brookville contemporary listed for $6.8 million and for $12.8 million, Northway, the 14,000 square foot Lattingtown Federal-style estate featured in the 1986 Steven Spielberg film The Money Pit, which includes, partway down the driveway, a two-story carriage house with a car collector’s dream six-car garage. Michael Todd, general manager of the car dealership’s Bentley division, said having the real estate office on site will make it easier to help homebuyers add cachet and fill up their garages. His clients typically have four to six garage spaces they want filled with fine automobiles, even if the cars never get driven. “It’s a lifestyle,” Michael said. “It’s a sign of success.” SE
The “strategic alliance” between Rolls-Royce and Shawn Elliott grew out of doing events together. “NO EXPENSE SPARED, NO DETAIL OVERLOOKED” By LINDA SASLOW
After college, Joe got his first job as a clerk working for an oil company. Moving quickly through the ranks, at the age of 27, he became a member of the NY Mercantile Exchange. But his dream of building houses continued to haunt him, until he took a month off from work, bought a foreclosed lot in Brookville for $275,000 and built his first house on speculation. He sold it for $1.3 million.

DESIGN TRENDS: The New Glamour Goes in One Era and Out Another “Achieving A Look That Is ‘Over The Top’” By M.C. SUSSMAN
Chris Plotkin, owner of Furniture Plus in Westbury, travels to the Milan Furniture Fair each April to get a feel for the latest home furnishings trends. “Furniture trends are being set in Europe, mainly Italy,” Chris says, though he also shops the newest offerings twice a year at High Point, North Carolina. What he found this year is a trend toward the glamorous and unique, and a move towards the eclectic look, a welcoming, easy elegance that’s a fusion of traditional and modern. Eclectic style sweeps into one era and out the next, even in a classic setting, creating stylish, comfortable, functional and inviting living spaces. “Do you like a wide variety of styles in your home? Do you prefer things that aren’t ‘matchy matchy’? Do you like to think outside of the box when it comes to home decor – maybe even think up new uses for

traditional items? If so, you actually have a style, and it’s called eclectic,” says Chris. Though Long Islanders tend to lean more towards traditional than contemporary, those who like the eclectic look, Chris adds, “will not adhere to one decorating style, but instead choose what they feel is the ’best’ of a few particular decorating styles and incorporate those elements into their home.” Decorating in an eclectic fashion stems from the fine arts and architecture. Pioneers of the blended decorating style “prided themselves on the fact that they didn’t adhere to any particular style, then set about doing their own thing,” Chris says, though “their work was so successful that their plan appears to have backfired, giving birth to the eclectic decorating style.” That doesn’t mean that just anything goes. True eclectic style “is a very purposeful and well thought-out way of decorating,” Chris explains, calmly mixing
Decorating in an eclectic fashion stems from the fine arts and architecture. periods and styles “while creating a cohesive look through color, texture and/or shape” and the “unexpected use of materials and/or items.” The resulting uniqueness is what Chris describes as “a careful gathering of interesting elements that all work together.” Clutter is not an element of eclectic style; rather, everything has its place. Black and white plays a primary role in this year’s palette, along with high-gloss piano finishes, exotic stones and wood finishes like onyx, zebrawood and ebony Makassar ebony. Glamour also is paramount. As demographics on Long Island shift, Chris increasingly works with wealthy Asian homeowners for whom contemporary “is too simplistic.” Looking at homes “more from a ‘palace’ or ‘castle’ perspective,” Chris helps them achieve an over-the-top look . In the furniture industry since 1991, first on the wholesale side, Chris specialized early on distributing leather furniture from Italy and still works with numerous Italian manufacturers. Ten years ago, he opened a retail store, and besides his Westbury flagship, previously had locations in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Among the high-end lines Furniture Plus car-
ries are the ultra-elegant furnishings of the luxury Italian furniture Francesco Molon, whose romantic and sophisticated “Eclectica” collection goes beyond traditional design to embrace Art Deco’s glitz and glamour. Furniture Plus also deals in E.J. Victor’s exquisite heirloom quality, hand-crafted bedroom, dining, occasional and accent furniture, with finishes ranging from cutting-edge exotic to the tried and true traditional. Chris often works with designers and interior decorators who bring their clients to his showroom and also works directly with consumers. The hardest part of furniture shopping for homeowners is understanding exactly what they want and coordinating “champagne taste with a beer budget,” Chris says. Rather than impose his personal predilection for European contemporary on clients, Chris asks “simple questions about colors, shapes and comfort” that helps him understand their vision, taste and preferences. “It’s similar to restaurant ordering,” Chris says. “Some people are very specific and some need help in choosing what they would like -- meat or fish, sour or sweet, hot or cold.” SE

DORM SWEET DORM DORM SWEET DORM
DORM SWEET DORM Transforming a pint-sized dorm room into a chic and comfortable haven can be a challenge, especially when your roommate’s taste is urban modern and you prefer a preppy look. That doesn’t mean the shared quarters can’t be a cool, workable place to study, relax and hang out with friends. Plan ahead. Start with the layout and measure. The folks at Dormify. com suggest rearranging furniture as soon as you check in at school. Move a dresser into a closet, place desks back to back, loft bunks to create study space underneath or add decorative pillows to turn extra-long twins into couch-like day beds. For extra storage space, use over-the-door racks and under-the-bed containers.
Roommates have individual tastes, but coordinating colors and fabrics can do decorating wonders. Agree on a color scheme or buy identical yet reversible dorm comforter sets. Your roommate might prefer Kenzie’s multi-stripe pattern in fuchsia and aqua on one side, while you choose the reverse, dressing your bed with the dot pattern on a bright blue background on the other side. Each set, available at Bed Bath and Beyond, comes with a pillow sham, pillow case, sheets, a throw blanket and a hanging storage bag. Add some punch with colorful appliances, such as a Keurig® K10 MINI Plus Brewer in cobalt Blue, PBTeen’s retro mini fridge in “pool” blue or a
super-cool fridge in magenta pink. Its magnetic exterior does double duty as a bulletin board. Keep stuff organized with a roomy multi-pocket shower tote and save space with an iHome® iDL100 Triple Charging FM Clock Radio with dual lightning docks, dual alarms plus a USB port that lets you charge your iPhone and iPad at the same time. Among other essentials: don’t forget flip-flops for the shower; a mattress protector and a good, thick mattress pad; and a powerful new tablet such as the 12.2-inch Samsung Galaxy Note Pro or Microsoft Surface 3. Pack your Bluetooth speakers, and for privacy, of sorts, headphones and ear buds. Though the quarters may be cozy,
extra seating can be comfortable and stylish. The portable floor couch from improvementscatalog.com comes in a fun, red, tufted fabric and adjusts easily from flat to upright. PBTeen’s supersoft faux fur covered inflatable exercise ball can be used as a desk chair while their ultra-shaggy hang-a-round chair is perfect to sink into to read, play video games or chat with friends. Abstract Expressionism in the Hamptons Originally from Washington State, Robert Motherwell came to New York as a young man, where he soon became part of a group of groundbreaking painters including Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Rejecting the then-current styles of American art, they sought a deeper connection to reality by going beyond a realistic style. Abstract Expressionism was born. During the 1940s and early 1950s, Motherwell worked in an East Hampton home and studio designed by noted French architect Pierre Chareau. Years later, Motherwell reflected that he did his best artwork there. Motherwell’s years in East Hampton and his significant works will be celebrated in an exhibition at Guild Hall Museum. “Robert Motherwell: The East Hampton Years, 19441952” runs August 9 to October 13 and focuses on 16 works of art gathered from three private collections, as well as major museums. Open year round, Guild Hall Museum features an impressive permanent collection with artwork by luminaries like Willem de Kooning, Childe Hassam, Chuck Close, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns and James Rosenquist. Tiffany and More at the Nassau County Museum of Art Housed in a former Gold Coast mansion and surrounded by a lush sculpture garden, the Nassau County Museum of Art features three simultaneous shows through November 9. In the main galleries, Still Life: 1970s Photorealism presents works from the Yale University Art Gallery. Among the artists represented in this show of hyper-realistic images are Duane Hanson, Malcolm Morley, Audrey Flack, Ralph Goings, Ben Schonzeit and Idelle Weber. Several years ago, the museum acquired a large collection of works by Lewis Comfort Tiffany. Drawing from this body of art, the museum’s second floor galleries will come alive with an exceptional exhibition entitled Tiffany’s Orient. Although best known for his glittering stained glass windows, famed lamps and other shimmering creations, Tiffany’s earlier artistic creations were his paintings. Among these are a series inspired by his journeys through North Africa and the East, such as A Street in Cairo and Egyptian Pyramids Framed by Columns. The exhibition also will showcase some of his decorative arts. The museum’s Contemporary Collectors Gallery will feature the work of Friedrich Kunath. The German born Los Angeles-based artist uses a variety of media. Kunath has created paintings in watercolor and acrylic and his artwork includes sculpture, videos and photographs. Worthy of a stroll, the museum’s sculpture park features sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle, Fernando Botero and Mark Di Suvero melded into its extensive outdoor grounds. Among the headliners are Shirley Reeves, the former lead singer of the Shirelles, whose late 50s and 60s hits included “Baby, It’s You,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” Another veteran doo wop group, the Devotions, sing their hit “Rip Van Winkle.” The Knockouts, The Legendary Teenagers and others also will perform. A Gold Coast Showhouse The glamour and glory of the Gatsby era will be palpable at the Second Annual Design Showhouse in Hempstead House at the former Guggenheim Estate on the 200-acre Sands Point Preserve from November 1 through November 30. “People want to see the house in all its glory,” says Jean-Marie Posner, executive director of Friends of Sands Point Preserve, which is sponsoring the event. The mansion is frequently used for private, catered events on weekends but otherwise stands “vacant and barren.” In 1917, when Daniel and Florence Guggenheim moved into Hempstead House, their Tudor-style mansion, the 50,000-square foot residence became the backdrop for frequent, lavish parties where high society mingled.

Karli Hagedorn, Chairman of Friends of the Sands Point Preserve, describes it this way: “The Guggenheim Estate exemplifies the opulence of the Gatsby Era, and the annual Showhouses are a great way for the public to view an authentic Gold Coast estate while helping us raise funds for essential renovations and improvements.” The epitome of the grand style of Long Islands Gilded Age, the Hunt & Hunt-designed mansion boasts a 60foot high foyer, imposing stone gargoyles, soaring Gothic windows and from the second floor, views of Long Island Sound. The Showhouse theme, Home of an American Renaissance Family, is a contemporary interpretation of how the famed Guggenheim family lived.
“The Guggenheim Estate exemplifies the opulence of the Gatsby Era”— Karli Hagedorn, Chairman of Friends of the Sands Point Preserve “This year we are recognizing the Guggenheim family who created this splendid Gold Coast estate, and we are asking designers to take a modern day perspective on the Guggenheim’s distinctive lifestyle, imagining how family members would live in Hempstead House today,” Jean-Marie said. “The 2014 Showhouse has been expanded to include additional designers and newly renovated rooms that were not presented to the public before.” Among the highlights will be the fully restored master bedroom suites, including two sumptuous master baths. The Guggenheims “slept separately,” Jean-Marie says. The “King’s room” has a large sitting area while the “Queen’s bedroom” has a spectacular water view. Call it an indoor regatta. Since May, when Craig Hatchett opened Row45, the first rowing and sculpting studio on Long Island, rowers have been whooshing back and forth on his rowing machines, plying through virtual waters on the 45-minute-a-class path to fitness. The workout is so rewarding that Stephanie Buonocore drives from Hewlett to the Albertson rowing studio three times a week or more to participate in the 45 minute classes. “It’s just awesome,” Stephanie says. “It is challenging, motivating. I already have seen definition in my arms and
stomach. It is building my endurance.” An intense, low-impact, calorie burning workout, rowing incorporates “posture-improving movements of the leg press, hip hinge and upper-body rowing motion,” according to the row45 website, row45.com The crewteam type exercise helps strengthen the core while maximizing flexibility and range of motion. Like rowing on water, resistance increases with speed and intensity. When it comes to exercise, Stephanie, 40, says she “tried everything” from kickboxing to spin classes, but “wasn’t getting such a great workout.” With rowing, her confidence is up and she looks forward to the classes, even after working all day as a surgical technician at an eye surgery center. “I am tired, but I want that workout. I feel so much better after I leave there.” By the time she finishes the 45 minute workout, her clothes are “soaking wet.” Craig, who also owns D-Fine Fitness, a personal training gym at the same location, says rowing is a full body workout that uses 60 percent legs, 20 percent core and 20 percent upper body. Unlike spinning, where participants hunch over bikes, rowing is done in an upright position with the core held tight. “It is non-impact,” Craig says. During intervals off the machine, the routine includes squats and dumbbells. “It’s definitely a high energy workout,” Craig says. Music plays. Beginners are encouraged to go at their own pace, while the rowing machine keeps track of how many calories are burned and meters traveled. To keep the repetitive motion from being boring, Row45 offers three different classes. The energetic Row & Sculpt class includes a warm-up and cool down and works on rowing technique, as well as functional strength movements. The class boosts metabolism, builds both cardiovascular endurance and strength through repetitive resistance training. Working in teams, as partners and as a crew, the Indo-Row® class is a challenging total-body workout that captures elements of competitive on-water rowing. The fast-paced class zips from “Skills and Drills” to “Waves and Recoveries.” It builds to a final, friendly relay race that adds a competitive element. “It definitely builds camaraderie,” Craig adds . The Shockwave® class involves extreme cross-training. This
circuit challenge on the water rower provides “short-burst, high-intensity, calorie-torching intervals” along with functional strength and sculpting stations designed to target and chisel participants’ legs, core and arms. The motivational, friendly yet competitive strategy helps rowers push themselves to the max, with extreme results. Wendy Ehrlich, 53, a vice president and senior advisor consultant at Oppenheimer Funds, an asset management firm, started taking classes as soon as Row45 opened. Though Wendy loves the spin classes she took for years that workout is strictly cardio. Rowing, on the other hand, she says, is “targeting all my muscles in a fast-paced environment. The 45 minutes literally fly by.” Rowing provides the weight-bearing training Wendy knows she needs, but always dreaded. “The instructor weaves mat work into the program so seamlessly I no longer dread the idea of crunches and lunges,” she says. Craig notes rowing burns calories and “is a good sweat. It’s a good workout.” He came up with the concept after working out on a rowing machine at a gym while on vacation in South Beach last year. Back in New York, he checked out rowing classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan and researched machines, deciding to invest in 11 WaterRowers, each equipped with a flywheel that mimics the feel and dynamic resistance of gliding across the water, enhanced by a soothing wave-like sound. Mark Kamberg, 48, a Roslyn resident and the owner of a food ingredient company, takes classes at Row45 three times a week. Mark says the classes are “full of energy” and a little different each time. “They are probably one of the best full body workouts I have ever done, not only burning calories, but tightening core and building muscles. There are individual goal challenges as well as class challenges constantly keeping a level of enthusiasm and excitement in the room.” Row45 runs three to five classes a day. The rowing regimens are so popular Craig is looking to expand to locations in Syosset-Woodbury and Lynbrook. Classes cost $25 apiece with a discount for five or 10 classes. A DAY IN EAST HAMPTON Even in fall, East Hampton beckons. “Summer is divine, but the most gorgeous season here is definitely the fall,” says Richard Barons, executive director of the East Hampton Historical Society. “The shops are still open, you can get restaurant reservations and the majority of historic houses and museums are open until at least Columbus Day weekend.” The village itself covers a fairly small area within the Town of East Hampton, which includes Springs, Wainscott, Amagansett, Montauk, parts of Sag Harbor and more. World-class shopping, a social scene replete with resident celebrities, a strong artistic heritage and vibrant restaurants combine here against the backdrop of stately mansions, historic buildings, incredible vistas and a pristine shoreline. No matter the season, East Hampton boasts some of Long Islands most beautiful beaches, including Main Beach, named Best Beach in America 2013 by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach. Fabulous mansions and a chance to peek at the homes of the stars make the trip to the beach equally inviting. Lily Pond Lane, which runs parallel to the sands, is home to some of the town’s most sought-after real estate. summer. Need a cup of sugar? Neighbors include Martha Stewart, whose shingled three-story manse features gardens abloom with roses, a pool and a croquet court. Just east is coveted Further Lane, which also hugs the shore. Earlier this year, Barry Rosenstein, hedge fund manager of Jana Partners, paid $147 million for an 18-acre beachfront property at this exclusive address. Among his neighbors are art dealer Larry Gagosian as well as Jerry Seinfeld, whose 12-acre estate once belonged to Billy Joel and includes a manor house, pool and its own baseball diamond. In the village, high-end designer boutiques as well as one-of-a-kind emporiums summon. Visit the recently opened outpost of Kate Spade, 17 Newtown Lane, or stop by Ralph Lauren, John Varvatos and those of other noted designers. If you suddenly hear the strains of Fleetwood Mac, never fear. You’re not in a time warp. You’ve just entered Haute Hippie at 20 Newtown Lane, where a blend of retro design with contemporary twists rules the day. East Hampton retains a rich historical heritage. Among the village’s familiar sights are three English-style windmills. After shopping, walk to the fork between North Main Street and Pantigo Road, where the Hook Mill, built in 1806, stands tall.
No matter the season, East Hampton boasts some of Long Islands most beautiful beaches, including Main Beach, named Best Beach in America 2013 by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach.
East Hampton Historical Society’s museums are worth a visit. Mulford Farm, 10 James Lane, built in the late 1600s, features one of the most intact English Colonial farmsteads in the U.S. The colonial Osborn-Jackson House at 101 Main Street, built in 1723 and named for its first and last owners, provides a glimpse into furnishings typical of affluent families of the time. Until the late 1960’s, it was the home to six generations of Osborns. East Hampton also offers artistic treasures. LongHouse Reserve at 133 Hands Creek Road encompasses nearly 16 acres of gardens with lush blossoms, ornamental grasses and a tranquil pond, interspersed with modern sculpture. Founded by textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen, LongHouse features over 60 works of art including Dale Chihuly’s glass installations, a Willem de Kooning bronze and a Buckminster Fuller-designed dome. Another must-see is the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, 830 Springs Fireplace Road in the Springs area, north of the village. Abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock and his wife, artist Lee Krasner, lived and worked in this home, now a National Historic Landmark. A section of Pollock’s studio floor bears the telltale vibrant spots and swirls of the artist’s unique style. Pollock’s jazz record collection, personal library and some of the couple’s paintings are displayed and regularly changing exhibitions are scheduled. Guild Hall, at 158 Main Street, is a year-round cultural center. The museum’s impressive permanent art collection features Thomas Moran and
Childe Hassam paintings as well as creations by Winslow Homer and Andy Warhol. Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater live entertainment includes staged readings, theatrical performances with Linda Eder and Ben Folds and conversations with culinary celebrity Daniel Boulud. Galleries like the Drawing Room Gallery, 66 Newtown Lane showcase contemporary and older artwork. The Vered Art Gallery, 68 Park Place, features works of contemporary and modern masters including Man Ray, Picasso and Chagall. Excellent restaurants abound. For dinner, popular eatery Fresno, 8 Fresno Place, serves delectable New American cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere with its wooden-beamed dining room and covered outdoor patio. Celebrity watchers flock to Nick & Toni’s, 136 North Main Street, for local, organic food while rubbing elbows with the likes of Paul McCartney, Donna Karan and others who frequent this perennially popular restaurant. To satisfy a sweet tooth, head out to Scoop du Jour, 35 Newtown Lane, where over 40 sugary flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt, as well as decadent Dreesen’s donuts, await. The pleasures in this East End village are bountiful. Richard Barons concludes, “East Hampton is one of the most beautiful villages in America. Its historic buildings with brown shingles, Puritan saltboxes and church spires are all reminiscent of a small English village. And somehow, in this mad, industrial, electronic age, it has retained its very English rural look. SE

JEWELRY JUNGLE MAKING A FASHION STATEMENT WITH WEARABLE ART STORY BY LENA FINKEL

It’s a whole new world full of pearls, spikes, crystals and sometimes all three at the same time. With jaw-dropping pieces now every day accessories, high-end jewelry designers are stepping up their game. From the dainty and the delicate to the big and bold, high-end baubles cover the entire spectrum these days. Haute couture accessories brands such as Shourouk, Jolita and Erickson Beamon produce wearable art — statement-making jewelry that speaks as loudly about its owner as any dress ever could. Shouruouk, known for its extravagant, over-the-top pieces, juxtaposes Swarovski crystals, sequins, silk and painted stones to produce colorful creations that can be spotted a mile away. Even the ever chic Carrie Bradshaw donned some of the innovative pieces in Sex and the City 2 and others appeared in the hit television show Gossip Girl. Jolita uses the same tactic of contrasting unlikely materials such as pearls, rhinestones and braided silk to create true masterpieces. But jewelry aficionados aren’t waiting for special occasions to wear such lavish baubles. Statement necklaces often are worn with plain t-shirts while bold earrings are paired with jeans, making it easier than ever to incorporate wearable art into your wardrobe. Many celebs are in on the action with Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Kelly Osbourne and even First Lady Michelle Obama seen sporting Erickson Beamon jewelry — both on the streets and on the red carpet.
Luxury jewelry brand MGEMS is certainly no stranger to this “bigger is better” philosophy. MGEMS co-owner and designer Manda Kovar recalls when she and Melissa Cohen started beading together 14 years ago, “the large chunky turquoise necklace was the goto piece” and “we were selling things off our neck.” With the new trend of statement-making jewelry back in vogue, this summer once again they “couldn’t keep them in stock.” Designers also are using old materials in new and youthful ways, mixing modern and traditional. Rose-gold and mixed metals are making a splash and fine cultured pearls are again a must have. But don’t be fooled by their old-fashioned aura — these certainly aren’t your grandma’s dated strands. Of course, nearly every designer seems to have his or her own interpretation of how to incorporate the lustrous spheres. While jeweler Lizzie Fortunato chooses to juxtapose delicate pearls with colorful glass stones and chunky chains, minimalist brand Vita Fede keeps it simple by creating open gold cuffs with pearls at each end. Though it may feel like pearls are popping up out of nowhere, big fashion houses put them back on the map. “Chanel and Dior sent pearls down the runway and featured them in editorial and advertising campaigns and now everyone is using pearls,” says Jennifer Mankins, owner of Brooklyn’s Bird, a high-end boutique, says. “Five years ago young designers nev-

er would have been working with pearls.” To stay ahead of the pulse, Maddy Cohen, owner of high-end boutique Maddy’s 390 in Greenvale, travels to Paris and Milan for Fashion Week twice a year, selecting special pieces from $350 to a few thousand dollars. Mankins, whose trinkets include $24 Jujumade earrings and $1,300 Tilda Biehn rings tries to discover budding designers before anyone else. “One of my favorite designers is Caitlin Mociun,” Mankins says. “I bought her very first collection when she was fresh out of R.I.S.D. (Rhode Island School of Design) and making clothing. Now she is one of the most sought-after alternative jewelry de-
signers in the country.” Though big, statement-making jewelry is certainly becoming increasingly popular, that doesn’t mean classic luxury jewelry has gone out of style. Women still are constantly on the hunt for those timeless baubles they could wear forever, no matter what trend is in season. “Jewelry is so personal, and fine jewelry is so special, that women usually put a lot of thought and energy into picking out pieces that they love and that will last them a lifetime,” Mankins says. So whether you’re looking for a truly jaw-dropping piece or timeless gem, there’s definitely more than enough eye candy to keep you coming back for more. SE

LUXURY REAL ESTATE
Q & A: Real Estate Law
John P. Rosenblatt, Esq. is the senior attorney in the Law Offices of John P. Rosenblatt based in Farmingdale and Melville. He has been concentrating in the representation of luxury home buyers and sellers for over 30 years. www. rosenblattesq.com Two pieces of information are required to determine whether all structures and improvements to a property were approved by the appropriate municipality. The first is an up-to-date survey. A good surveyor will make sure all structures on the property appear on the survey with their accurate dimensions indicated. The second is a municipal certificate of occupancy search from the appropriate municipality. By comparing the two, the buyer and their attorney should be able to ascertain whether all structures are covered. This entails not only ascertaining if there is a certificate of occupancy or certificate of completion on file, but if it is up-to-date. Thus, if there is a deck on the property and the dimensions on the survey indicate it is 15x20 ft., but the certificate of completion indicates 10x 12 ft., this would be an indication the deck either was demolished and rebuilt or extended subsequent to issuance of the certificate of completion. Accordingly a new certificate would be required. It also is important to note protocols vary between municipalities. Some municipalities indicate the dimensions of a structure on their certificates and some do not. If no dimensions are indicated, a visit to the Building Department of the town or village is necessary to examine the plans or permits on file. These documents typically will give the dimensions. All of these searches can be conducted by a good title company and interpreted by an experienced real estate attorney.

Buying a home is an important and sometimes complex transaction, for both buyers and sellers of luxury homes. To help alleviate unnecessary anguish, Shawn Elliott LUXURY asked three top Long Island residential real estate lawyers to provide some guidance to the following questions: How can prospective luxury home buyers be certain all improvements to a property were approved by the Town or Village? What research, inspections or other due diligence do you recommend to protect your clients?
Denise R. Langweber, Esq. is a partner in the law firm of Denise R. Langweber L.L.P. based in Wantagh. She has been providing concierge legal representations to purchasers, sellers and lenders for 32 years. www.langweberlaw.com
Mitch Diamond Esq. is the founding partner in the Diamond Law Group based in Massapequa Park on Long Island and has been representing luxury home buyers for over 15 years. www.Diamondlawgroup.com
Ideally, sellers should reconcile the current status of the premises with municipalities prior to listing their home for sale. However, most don’t. We suggest to listing realtors they broach this issue with sellers and express to them the danger of ignoring the lack of proper certificates until revealed by a title search.
For both buyers and sellers, making sure all existing structures and improvements are legal is extremely important. Where this really becomes a problem is when a contract is signed and no one has done a preliminary search to determine this until the closing is imminent, which unfortunately happens way too often. It causes stressful and expensive delays or could even result in the transaction being cancelled. The obvious solution is for a seller to address this issue before listing the house, but few are willing to spend the nominal cost to do so. Agents could insist the seller establish the homes’ status before putting it on the market. However, sellers may not want to engage their attorney before a deal is on the table, not realizing the anguish of a failed deal far outweighs any upfront investment in the building department due diligence.
Currently, building departments generally are requiring certificates for virtually every change or alteration that might have been made, i.e. central air conditioning units, fences, bay windows, sheds, etc. The process of “legalizing” a home frequently reveals numerous other features that also require permits not contemplated by the parties. This is what makes closing with a post-closing escrow a risk to buyers. It is difficult to anticipate everything a building inspector may require a certificate for, or what repairs or changes may need to be made. There also is the risk a variance will be required, which is more costly and time consuming. Prospective purchasers may want to consult with an expeditor or architect who can review the current filings and compare them to the current status of the home and report what additionally may be required. Due diligence will vary based upon the particular property in question as well as its location. At a minimum, prospective luxury home buyers are encouraged to obtain a home inspection, termite inspection and title search. In some properties, mold, radon, lead, asbestos and other conditions may be indicated requiring further inspection. Hurricane Sandy damaged properties require research and proof of prior insurance claims and repairs made so purchasers will not be prevented from making claims in the event of another storm. Cooperatives and condominiums require additional reviews of financial statements and board minutes to gain a complete status of the health of those entities.
Hopefully, forewarned is forearmed. As a buyer or seller, be careful of this issue. There are nuances to it only a very experienced real estate attorney can handle and address. SE

NORTHWAY: A SPLENDID VERSACE-ESQUE MANSION By M.C. SUSSMAN
Perfection begins at the columned white wood gated entryway along Feeks Lane, Lattingtown’s most coveted address. “Northway,” a breathtaking mansion, exemplifies the finest in modern living coupled with the unparalleled splendor of a 5.4 acre Gilded Age estate. Down a quarter-mile long rhododendron-lined driveway and beyond a white pebble motor court stands the gracious home, a meticulously restored, stylish eight bedroom, Federal-style three story white clapboard center hall colonial, bracketed by symmetrical wings, with black shutters and a gray New England cedar roof. The exteriors of the elegant mansion, built at the end of the nineteenth century for H.W. Warner, were used for the filming of The Money Pit, Steven Spielberg’s

OUR FAVORITE NORTH SHORE STEAKHOUSES By M.C. SUSSMAN
In the mood for steak? Whether you like yours well done, medium or rare, these North Shore restaurants offer some of the best, biggest, juiciest steaks anywhere. How about a tender, almost buttery filet mignon, a rich and beefy Delmonico or a thick, juicy porterhouse (for two, three or four)? Carnivores won’t be disappointed at steakhouses like Peter Luger’s of Great Neck, Bryant and Cooper, Hendricks
HENDRICK’S TAVERN The Poll Brothers’ newest winner, Hendrick’s Tavern, on the landmark 1740 restored estate home of Hendrick Onderdonk, has a clubby, urban style with two bar areas, three private dining rooms, a VIP bar for cocktail parties and a ballroom for large, catered affairs. The main dining room exudes comfortable elegance with wood paneled walls, burgundy leather banquettes, classic photographs and antique mirrors. The menu boasts the same dry aged and prime steaks as the family’s nearby flagship, Bryant and Cooper, as well as a raw bar, comfort foods like mac and cheese, chicken wings, filet mignon sliders and panko-crusted avocado. Starters include a Maryland crabcake or a sashimi-style Ahi Tuna Poke and kale salad. Fish lovers can choose from Chatham Cod, grilled Branzino or seared Norwegian salmon. Sides range from lobster fried rice to homemade tator tots and sweet corn on the cob. For dessert, don’t miss the white chocolate cloud cake reminiscent of an oversized ring ding or indulge in a stickie bun with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. CHAS. ROTHMANN’S STEAKHOUSE Along 25A in East Norwich, comfortable booths, a cozy library in a turret and a busy bar scene define Chas. Rothmann’s, a first class steakhouse. It’s a place to go for a romantic dinner or a family outing. Singles on the prowl mingle by the bar near the massive stone fireplace, under the gaze of a mounted bull moose head and a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt. The former President, who lived nearby at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, was known to ride by horseback to eat there. (The original Rothmann’s opened in 1907.) In subsequent years, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Bob Hope dined at Rothmann’s. Burt Bachrach was the owner for 19 years, though the newest rendition opened in 1998. The filet mignon is melt-in-your-mouth tender, divine with béarnaise sauce and a dollop of creamed spinach on the side. For dessert, the molten chocolate cake gets a gold star. CHAS. Tavern in Roslyn or Rothmann’s in East Norwich. And there’s plenty of other hearty fare on the menus, too. PETER LUGER The patriarch of steak houses, Peter Luger made its debut in Brooklyn in 1887, and opened its door at the Great Neck location in 1962. The decor is rough hewn, with wood floors and dark ceiling beams, stucco walls and a large wrought iron chandelier. The granddaddy of steak houses draws serious beef aficionados with their signature porterhouse for two, with creamed spinach and well done hash browns on the side, and perhaps, a plate of sliced tomatoes, with or without onions. Even after that, dessert is a must: pecan pie with a dollop of whipped cream, also known as “schlag,” tops off a delicious meal. PETER LUGER STEAK HOUSE 255 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) Great Neck (516) 487-8800
BRYANT AND COOPER No matter the night, no matter the season, Bryant and Cooper’s unparalleled fare draws the “in” crowd to its dark paneled dining room. Among Gillis and George Poll’s perennially popular starters are the grand cold seafood platter, stone crabs fresh in season from Joe’s in Miami, and tuna tartar. Dive into their signature salad -- jumbo shrimps chopped into 1/2 inch pieces, string beans, beefsteak tomatoes, onions, crumbled bacon, and pimentos, dressed with a dash of red vinegar and olive oil. For the main course, there’s the exceptional porterhouse for two or more, a succulent sirloin, velvety 10 oz. filet mignon, jumbo three to four pound lobsters and fresh, grilled fish, with fresh vegetables on the side. For dessert, opt for creme brulee, cheesecake or a fresh fruit platter. BRYANT & COOPER 2 Middle Neck Road Roslyn (516) 627-7270

Sunrise Soiree
Shopping for a good cause is a special delight. On August 5th, Sunrise Day Camp, the first dedicated day camp in the nation for children with cancer and their siblings, held its annual Ladies Summer Soiree at Glen Head Country Club. Guests snapped up wares from fashionable vendors such as Splurge, Eye Candy, The Chintz Giraffe, The Paper Tiger, Momentum and MGEMS. Ladies enjoyed blowouts by Lauren Lavelle Salon, vied for raffle prizes and had their fortunes revealed while dining on creative tapas-like fare. LUXURY was there to cheer on the day’s big spenders supporting Sunrise Day Camp, which serves its campers free of charge. JAMIE DARDASHTIAN

COLOR IS KING B P G L
THE GOOD LIFE
Y A U L A A N Z I I C A T A
“Are you sure?” my husband asked, his brows furrowed with concern. Robert was conservative when it came to this. We’d been married five years and just moved into our house. “I’m sure,” I said, then looked over and smiled at Dave, the tall, muscular man standing in our bedroom. It was a bold move. Not many couples would introduce so many vibrant colors into a 70 year-old Tudor Chalet. “Don’t be afraid of color,” I said to Robert, eyeing the cans of Winchester Sage green paint that Dave, the painter, was opening. You see it every day but probably underestimate its power. The colors of your home speak volumes about your life. They highlight your furnishings, play off the light and impact your mood. Color is big. And in my house, color is king. What visitors remark on most – besides the stone fireplace or the Juliet balcony overlooking the living room – are the colors on the wall. To find the perfect shade to complement the original lilac tiles with black tile trim in the upstairs bathroom, we searched every color wheel we could find. The problem? The subtle variations in the tiles. Built in the late 1920s, the bathroom was designed with an arch over the bathtub. To accentuate the architecture, the tiles on the back wall were 102 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
arranged from a pale thistle on the bottom to a blush lilac at the top of the arch’s curve. What color would complement the gradation of shades? A kickass orchid. Picking colors was not without incident, Robert and I didn’t always agree. Or choose wisely. My living room has 20-foot cathedral ceilings, with a dark wood paneled A-frame – it looks like a small church or a Swiss ski chalet. To highlight these features, I decided to keep the walls white (the only white room in the house), except for the fireplace wall with the arched inset of built-in shelves beneath the balcony – I was leaning towards the reds. When the painters started working on the living room, I was in my office upstairs with the door closed, conducting a phone interview. Robert burst in and scribbled a note: “Come downstairs ASAP - fireplace wall color is HIDEOUS!!” He was right. The deep cranberry on the sample strip looked like hot bubblegum on the wall. The custom blend had to be tossed. We found the perfect crimson, strong enough to accompany the dark stones of the fireplace yet cheery enough to make you crave the cold, begging for a fire in the hearth below. Robert refused to admit to his color faux pas. He was aiming for a hearty Tuscan
ochre for the walls above the wainscoting in the stairway to the basement. “I think it’s a few shades too…loud,” I said, staring at the paint chip. “It’s perfect,” he declared. A few weeks later, when I came home after the painters left, Robert greeted me with a confident smile: “So…?” “It screams school bus yellow!” “It’s drying,” he countered. The next day I was still seeing red about Robert’s yellow, but he wouldn’t budge. I lived with it for years, even after Robert passed away. It served as one of many reminders of our colorful life. I no longer saw red, I saw Robert. Colors can maintain their punch, although change is always refreshing. I met Billy two years after becoming a widow. Through his eyes, I saw my house anew – and was delighted to discover I still loved every nook and cranny, as well as every splash of color. So did he. The first time he picked me up at home, I gave him a tour. “Wow, I love that every room is a different color!” he said. Eighteen
months later, Billy moved in. Eventually, we decided to paint the bedroom. Different from the color wars I’d had with Robert, Billy gave me carte blanche: “Whatever you want, as long as it’s not pink.” I chose Benjamin Moore’s Mighty Aphrodite, a deep rich lavender, the exact color of Friendly’s Black Raspberry ice cream, Billy’s favorite and a constant in our freezer. (Coincidence?) “It looks like melted ice cream,” laughed Billy, when he opened the can. Instead of hiring painters as Robert and I had done, Billy and I manned the brushes and rollers. With each brushstroke, the room took on a fresh feel, bright and airy. That’s part of the appeal of color – so many shades to love, so easy to change and saying goodbye to one color doesn’t mean you won’t see it again in a different tone. Basking in the glow of a job well done, we headed down to the lemony yellow kitchen for some black raspberry ice cream. SE
