DENISE R. LANGWEBER, L.L.P.
LETTER from the PUBLISHER HAPPY 2014! A new year is a perfect time to reflect on how we live and how that’s perennially changing. While our homes are more beautiful than ever, our lifestyle is not as formal as it once was. That’s apparent in the more casual way we dress when we dine out and in the more casual way our homes are laid out and furnished.
T
ake the formal dining room, for instance. Once a ‘must have,’ this saved-for-special-occasions- room may be in danger of extinction. Is it worth having a room that hardly gets used? We gather instead in our commodious kitchens with center islands and breakfast bars that meld into Great Rooms with various areas for conversing, dining and watching tv. As for the dining room, we can keep it in all its splendor as a testament to tradition. But there are also many ways we can choose to repurpose that space, from homework centers to home offices, libraries and playrooms. And in that big, open kitchen, chances are there’s a cool bar stool or two lurking by the center island’s breakfast bar. The choices for this fun, informal kind of seating are ramping up. Check out what we’ve found. For those who are downsizing, parting with treasured stuff isn’t easy. These days, much of it can be done virtually, from tag sale professionals offering appraisals and online sales of special items as well as live auctions and luxury tag sales. In this issue we also examine the growing trend of pushing our kids, practically from the time they are born, whether it’s toddler lessons in Mandarin or tutors for our middle schoolers, even when they are already good students. Is anything below a 96 really unacceptable? Our writer, psychologist Dr. Laurie Nadel examines the phenomenon. What we eat and the way we dine are also changing. Writer and vegetarian Linda Tagliaferro happily takes a look at the burgeoning fresh food movement and the places across the North Shore where we can indulge our growing passion for fresh, organic, health fare. HAPPY NEW YEAR. AND HAPPY READING!

ARCHITECT SHOWCASE
HABITECH PL ANNING & DESIGN:
WORKING FROM THE INSIDE OUT AIA Architect Denise Brooks and her interior design partner, Christine Ambers, ASID, follow the Shaker adage made popular by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright -- form follows function. “We work from the interiors out, rather than the exterior in,” explains Denise. “The function is really on the inside where people live.” Denise and Christine are the principals of Habitech Planning & Design, a residential and commercial architecture and interior design firm headquartered in a picturesque red barn in Cold Spring Harbor. For Denise, architecture is the family business. Schooled at the Pratt Institute and NYIT, she honed her trade under the tutelage of her father, Robert Kasindorf. Beginning in the 1950s, he left an indelible imprint on interiors, commercial and residential architecture on the North Shore. Christine, who previously worked with Robert on commercial interiors, joined Denise
12 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
12 years ago, helping continue his legacy. Denise and Christine work on projects hand-in-hand from the start, interviewing clients and visualizing the architecture of the home. “It represents the planning from the interior looking out,” Denise explained, with their combined skills in architecture and interior design providing better results for clients. The strategy eliminates conflict and insures that the sofa, for instance, fits with the architecture and the space. Some jobs require more architectural design; others are heavy on interior design. When an expansion is in order, the interior planning is done first to insure the wanted outcome. “There is no duplication of effort. We each have our specific task but they are integrated and work together,” Denise said. Recently, when a client secured Habitech’s services to build a dream home in Glen Head, they thought they wanted a center hall colonial. When Denise and Christine probed
By M. C. SUSSMAN
further into how they lived and “what it is they really need,” the project morphed “from a regular colonial to a Dutch colonial,” with a more open floor plan and a Great Room rather than formal living or dining rooms. After many permutations, the new home is being designed and drawn as a “custom modular” rather than a traditional “stick-built” home. Instead of rooms that go unused, traditional formal spaces are assigned other functions. What might have been a dining room, for instance, becomes an office or a dressing room. “They really wanted the space for their master bedroom suite, the dressing area, a bigger kitchen” Denise said. Still, the home was planned so that a future owner could easily revert to more traditional uses, or whatever else they pleased. Denise chose modular construction on the multi-million dollar design because “it’s plug and play.” Built indoors in a factory, weather is not a concern and the home is constructed
in a “much more stable environment.” Besides being well insulated and weather tight, the modular home is delivered with tile, carpet and millwork installed. Though there are size limitations because the home must be transported -albeit in large pieces -- “it is a stronger house,” the architect said. Once set on the foundation, the home practically snaps together with the help of electricians and plumbers. “It cuts down on the time for construction.” Denise also decided to use such forward-looking custom, high end modular construction for the expansion and addition of a second floor to a 1950s ranch home in Roslyn Harbor. “A lot of construction is going that way,” she said. “It is less expensive. It is faster. There is more control over craftsmanship.” As she would a conventional building site, Denise will visit the factories to monitor progress as the homes are framed and sheathed. The set up is “easier for quality control.” Nowadays, modular building doesn’t limit the design of “modular mansions,” she said. “They are beautiful. You wouldn’t know they are modular.” Using some of the bones of the existing structure, the Roslyn Harbor ranch will become a California Craftsman-style home. As part of the expansion of a Brookville ranch for a tall client, Denise raised the ceiling between the rafters in the kitchen to create light troughs. Instead of down lights, LED lights wash up on the curve of a refurbished greenhouse window. “It gave our client the sense of soaring space he wanted,” she said. The center island countertop was made of 2.4 inch thick poured cast glass; the floor is
cobalt blue glass. Polished cast concrete was used on the perimeter countertops. The results are striking. “We really create interior architecture,” Christine explained. “We are not just placing sofa and selecting fabrics. We are not just decorating the room. We are building the interior environment and that is where the space planning is extremely important and truly services the client.” The ultimate look is classic and timeless. While they build homes from scratch, Denise and Christine enjoy doing renovations. “We like to use what is there and expand on it,” Denise said. “Some houses have great footprints or bones and we just improve upon that,” while helping the clients express themselves. “A whole new house isn’t always necessary.” If a client does want a cavernous space, the architect and designer provide “areas where you can cocoon. “They want to impress but they live there, too,” Denise explained. “We try to meld those so it’s livable and expresses what that clients wants.” More often, that means an open floor plan with a kitchen open to a Great Room and “no more of the divided rooms” dedicated to a specific function. Media rooms are less in demand. Prayer rooms, however, are on the uptick. Denise also noted a trend toward multi-generational homes that accommodate families with young children as well as grandparents. Extensions can be designed to accommodate snow birds and extended family. For retirees who prefer to age in place, Habitech is designing master bedrooms on the first floor and elevators
to upstairs quarters. Taking present or future handicap issues into account -- lever door handles for those with carpal tunnel syndrome, for instance -- is “common sense good design,” Denise said. Christine calls their task, “intelligent planning.” To that end, they interview clients at length to see “how they live in the home and how it functions for them.” Planning is easier if they see or are told that the kids routinely dump their knapsacks in the foyer and can plan a mudroom or other options accordingly. “We design specifically for them, so they spend many years living in their homes and loving their homes.” The award-winning duo recently updated their website, www. habitechdesign.com. Among their commercial projects are Salon Rock in Roslyn, the Olympus On-Site Mobile Medical Showroom and in Manhattan, the main branch of Habib American Bank. Denise and Christine use space technology to alter designs. After the initial icebreaking, they advise clients to peruse creative idea books on houzz.com to see what they like and don’t like, much in the way years ago clients clipped photos of rooms they liked from shelter magazines. “We like a challenge,” Denise said. From the planning to the design process to the finished product “we really relish that.” SE Habitech Planning & Design 181 Main Street / Barn Cold Spring Harbor, NY (631) 692 8800

Some clients know just what they want, he said, while others have no idea. “Then there are some couples who have opposite tastes. When a wife is country, and her husband is rock n roll, now that’s a challenge!”
As a designer for more than 25 years, Keith uses what he calls an “anthropological approach” to interior design. “It’s a method based on understanding clients’ lifestyles and tastes to create a functional visual that reflects their personality and brings their vision to life,” Keith said. His clients — from Long Island’s Gold Coast to Manhattan and the Hamptons, and as far as Florida and Colorado — are quick to attest to his talents. “He really gets us,” said Rhona Hutton, an art deco aficionado who splits her time between
of frequent entertaining, Keith suggested creating a large bar area and designed the living room with generously proportioned seating to encourage conversation among family and guests. For the dining area, he shopped with them to find a round dining room table that opens to seat 12—perfect for holidays and large dinner parties. “I like the challenge of projects that are not typical and that intrigue me, “ Keith admitted, “And I especially like to figure out problem areas to make things work.” Some clients know just what they want,
Keith studied design, theater, architecture and human ecology. Inspired one day by a design teacher who told him, ‘Your passion shows in your work,’ Keith realized that he had found his calling in interior design. In a leap of faith, he established the Baltimore Design Group 25 years ago, which has since developed a portfolio of residential, commercial and hospitality work—including luxury private homes, hotels and corporate offices. Over the years, Keith has won numerous prestigious awards, such as the 2011 Hamptons Designer Showcase
and opulent event space, with colorful, luxurious furnishings and two billiards tables that conveyed the elite comforts of that era. The Baltimore Design Group occupies a 12,000 square foot Port Washington showroom filled with an extensive collection of fabrics, trims, furnishings, accessories, rugs, wall coverings and window treatments that capture the spirit of Keith’s attention to detail. A dedicated staff of 17 — including several design teams and production technicians — work under Keith’s guidance and expertise. To accommodate his growing
her 3,000 square foot Manhattan condo and her beach house in Atlantic Beach. Along with her husband Sandy, Rhona has been working with Keith for as long as she can remember. “We love to collect original art deco pieces, and have always found art deco to be a sexy and luxurious way to decorate,” she explained. “We are also big entertainers, and wanted our apartment to feel like a club, where our guests can come for drinks before we all go out for dinner. Keith helped us create an environment that feels like we’re on a ship during the 1920s.” Keith is quick to add enthusiastically, “I wanted it to feel like Normandy after World War I, but updated to 2013. Rhona and Sandy are living the Great Gatsby with touches of skull and crossbones.” Right from the entranceway, which conveys the vibe of the apartment and offers a glimpse of what’s to come, the Huttons’ apartment is designed in black and white, with bold accents of red. The starting point for Keith’s plan to turn the Huttons’ vision into a nauticalart deco fantasy was their kitchen, because as Keith explained, “People live in their kitchens, which are usually the center of activity.” For the Huttons, a customized kitchen was streamlined with cabinetry and lighting to feel like the inside of a ship, and doors with portholes were installed throughout the apartment, as well as unique decorative mirrors and oversized posters. The use of state-of-the-art technology, products and exotic materials were an important part of the design plan, as well as a reflection of Keith’s modern vision. To accommodate the Huttons’ lifestyle
he said, while others have no idea. “Then there are some couples who have opposite taste. When a wife is country, and her husband is rock n roll, now that’s a challenge!” Keith’s interest in design dates back to his childhood. “My parents always had to turn the lights on as soon as they got home,” he recalled with a chuckle, “because they never knew where the furniture would be. I guess I was always interested in transforming space.” Unsure of his direction after high school,
and the 2009 Producer’s Award from Mansions and Millionaires. He is a regular contributor to Designer Showcases. This fall, Keith’s “Summer Living Room” at the “Titans of Business and The Best of Design” showcase at Hempstead House in Sands Point, drew inspiration from the gothic mood of the 1912 mansion and its role in the lifestyle of the privileged class of Long Island’s Gold Coast. He filled his space in the former Guggenheim family mansion, now a Nassau County museum
number of East End clients, he opened a second showroom this year in Sag Harbor. Today, at 50, Keith looks forward to the continuation of his exciting and fulfilling journey. “Interior design is a multi-disciplinary career,” Keith explained. “It’s about understanding people, and creating fantasies. I love working with my clients and becoming part of their families. It’s such a fun process, and we are meant to giggle our way through it.” SE SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 17

MODERN TRENDS for LIVING Silver and gold vases:
Handpainted knobs from Etsy.com
Like fashion, home decor trends change from season to season, year to year. For 2014, colors deliver punch, particularly Radiant Orchids, Pantone’s Color of the Year, as well as cobalt blue and deep turquoise. Luxe is in. Imagine pieces with subtle bling or opulent inlays or metal accents. Neutral design schemes starting with grey, taupe, white or black provide a backdrop for eye candy: iron and glass accent tables, polished or bronzed copper, antiqued silver or gold vases and table lamps. Fake and real animal skins are hot, with short and long hair as upholstery on sofas and chairs and even tables. Romantic-looking Venetian marbled-paper prints, like the end papers of old books, are the pattern of choice from wallpaper to chic silk-screen linens. Kitchens are increasingly bejeweled, with custom cabinetry painted emerald and other gemstone hues and hand painted or cabochon knobs and great hardware. Chandeliers and pendant lighting make a statement all their own. “Kitchen Furniture” is all the rage. In top-of-the-line La Cornue’s new W Collection, a stove isn’t just a stove; a fridge isn’t just a fridge. Each piece brilliantly melds function, technology, and aesthetic. La Cornue Kitchen Furniture
Ceramic tile has a striking and imaginative new look. Privilege by Mirage, for instance, uses large faux gemstone, crystal and mineral panels composed of slices of agate cut transversely and finished with a hand-applied glossy resin. Made in Italy, the elegant porcelain stoneware comes in fabulous shades and provides a chic way to dress walls or the backsplash in luxury. For countertops, companies like Caesarstone have engineered composites with the exotic and glamorous semi-precious stone look. In the bath, freestanding tubs continue to reign. Showers are going curbless and the latest sockets accommodate USB plugs. Man caves are growing ever more sophisticated.

Open layouts with large windows bringing in natural lighting continue to be popular, with the kitchen as the hub of the home. And the walls between indoors and out are increasingly disappearing. SE M.C. SUSSMAN

R AISING THE BAR As homes become less formal -- and with open floor plans, kitchen island seating, and bar height tables -- bar stools are adding oomph to home decor. A fun option and a design statement, these increasingly ubiquitous seats have a personality all their own. From retro counter chairs to repurposed tractor seats, saddles and futuristic chairs in neon colors, bar stools come in a wide array of styles. Some are whimsical and can nearly pass for sculptures. Others have a rustic or industrial look. Some bar stools swivel, others just stand cool beside a center island, a barheight dining table or desk. With its A-symmetrical lines, the Serous bar stool by Las Vegas-based designer Michael Stolworthy is modern, functional furniture art. According to his website, www. msmdstudio.com, the name, Serous, reflects its fluid like design. For a retro yet modern home on the range feel, the Calvin Barstool from Arteriors Home, www.arteriorshome.com has a polished nickel geometric frame and a curved seat upholstered in black, button-tufted top-grain leather. Its cowhide wrap gives the stool an ultra chic wow look. The antique gilded branches of cast brass of Koket’s Enchanted Bar Stool, www.bykoket.com, have the magical aura of an enchanted forest. The natural-looking Hyacinth Bar Stools from RD Imports have seats made of sustainable and renewable water hyacinth fibers that are smoothed, then twisted and handwoven on a solid espresso-colored mahogany hardwood frame. Whether the emphasis is on swiveling, comfort or style, there’s bound to be a perfect bar stool for every design scheme. SE M.C. SUSSMAN

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS. Hollywood has long had a love affair with the North Shore’s opulent mansions, lush landscaping, quaint villages and picturesque waterfront. Martin Scorsese’s recent film The Wolf of Wall Street was largely set here. The Gold Coast was a paradise for Jordan Belfort, a Queens-born white collar criminal on whose story the movie was based. Leonardo DiCaprio played Belfort, who showed off his ill-gained wealth with a tony Old Brookville mansion, though the actual filming was done in a mansion in nearby Upper Brookville. The party at Belfort’s beach house where he meets the woman he marries, Naomi, was filmed in Sands Point and a scene from their outdoor wedding was filmed in Bayville. The film also stars Jonah Hill.

FINDS A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
ON LONG ISLAND By M. C. SUSSMAN
Steven Weisberg, the locations manager on the hunt for a mansion for Adam Sandler’s The Cobbler spent three days checking out 10 to 12 homes in Westchester and Nassau counties before choosing a French Normandy Tudor on Dupont Court in Brookville. The home, an $11 million Shawn Elliott listing, was selected because “it matched best to the script,” Weisberg said, which called for a “new construction mansion” on a hill with a long driveway. In the movie, the mansion belongs to a real estate developer, played by Ellen Barkin. While most of the movie takes place on the Lower East Side, a handful of scenes were filmed at the Brookville manse, Weisberg said. Besides the exterior, they included the kitchen, hallway and home office. Zach Elliott of Shawn Elliott Luxury,
who worked with the locations scout, said the home screamed opulence. While for last year’s The Great Gatsby, with Leonardo DeCaprio, filming took place in Australia, green scenes and computer generated imagery helped it look like the North Shore. The upcoming movie, Anesthesia, with Glenn Close, Kristen Stewart and Sam Waterston, was partly filmed at the Greenvale School in Old Brookville. Scenes from the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie starring Megan Fox were filmed at the Sands Point Preserve as well as Jones Beach State Park. According to Debbie Markowitz, director of the Nassau County Film Office, the film industry has a $140,000,000 per year direct economic impact in the Nassau County area. Between film, TV, music videos and commercials, the county has approximately 650 production days per year. Besides swanky Gold Coast mansions, many scenes are
filmed at the Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios in Bethpage. Part of the reason Nassau is such a popular film location, Debbie says, is that most of the county is “in the union studio zone and our diverse locations: beaches, mansions, suburban areas, myriad types of office buildings, the Nassau County Correction Center, parks, preserves, etc. “Pretty much, you name it, and we have it.” The Gold Coast has long been a favorite of film directors. Alfred Hitchcock discovered the North Shore’s magic when he filmed North by Northwest in 1959 at The Westbury House in Old Westbury Gardens and at Glen Cove’s Pratt Estate. Marlon Brando shot the gruesome horse head’s
scene from the 1972 classic The Godfather at Falaise, the former Harry Guggenheim estate that is now the Sands Point Preserve. Orson Welles’ iconic 1941 film Citizen Kane used Oheka Castle’s grandeur as Xanadu in the opening aerial sequence. The 1958 film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor was filmed on the Coleman estate in Muttontown. “Knole,” a 40,000-square foot mansion built circa 1903 in Old Westbury, was the location for the original Arthur, starring Dudley Moore as well as Reversal of Fortune, Mickey Blue Eyes, Devil’s Advocate, and The Associate which starred Whoopi Goldberg. Feature films including Salt with Angelina Jolie, Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet, Morning Glory, Man on a Ledge, Win Win, Henry’s Crime, Something Borrowed, and Dark Horse were all filmed locally. Among television series that have filmed here on a regular basis are Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife, Rescue Me, Royal Pains, 30 Rock, and Gossip Girl. SE SHAWNELLIOTT ELLIOTTLUXURY LUXURY11 27 SHAWN

ALL ISLAND DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIZING IN LONG ISLAND’S GOLD COAST
For the last 35 years Robert Drucker, owner of the All Island Group, has been involved in all aspects of the custom building industry. Drucker’s work spans from Montauk to the Jersey Shore. His latest building venture features a beautiful 9,000 square foot custom home in Mill Neck with expansive waterfront views of Oyster Bay. With extensive details inside and out, Drucker says, “This construction is really one of a kind. Considering the property, the rustic exterior and modern interior, you would be hard pressed to find this level of quality.” From the ground up, the entire facade of the home consists of imported high density split face marble. Inside, the house interior features a modern design with a blend of natural materials to help warm the spacious rooms. The great room includes a helical staircase with a custom iron railing and mahogany banister. Custom radius mahogany doors emphasize the rotunda shape. The mahogany was carried to all the other exterior doors, even the garage doors! Traditional trim gives way to “neomodern” casing and base molding. This detail gives a shadow effect around the doors and windows for a clean, crisp appearance. The interior doors are Garofoli, Italian design and manufactured, with custom glass panels that give the appearance that the inset glass is floating. “The homeowners were very detailed oriented.” Drucker explains. “Every item in the house had to be perfect, from the foundation to the painting.” This was not a problem for All Island. “We build for perfection every time.” The floors throughout the house are 5 inch Brazilian cherry with a natural finish to allow the diverse colors of the wood to pop. “This really helped bridge the old with the new,” says Drucker. The kitchen and pantry feature custom mahogany cabinetry with Caesarstone countertops and backsplashes. The six bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling Porcelanosa tile, appointed by Duravit and Nokin fixtures. Drucker, a Long Island native, states, “a hands on approach with the customer is the only way to insure that the final product will meet the homeowners’ every expectation.” Based out of their Farmingdale office, All Island performs 90% of the work on their jobs. Turning the Table on Formality By M. C. SUSSMAN
30 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
Can you count how many times you used your formal dining room last year? Was it just for a handful of holidays? Did the room sit empty, or did you use it as a quasi-home office for paperwork or a place for the kids to do their homework? Have you dreamed of replacing that fancy table with seating for 12 -- without the extra leaves -- with a custom bar and lounge with club chairs or an elegant billiard table, creating an out-of-the-box space that might get a little more play? You’re not alone. Increasingly, formal spaces, along with the warrens of small rooms in our homes, are becoming obsolete. According to the National Association of Home Builders, new homes and those undergoing major renovations have more open layouts. They provide space for family interaction in hubs like the kitchen, and eliminate or repurpose formal rooms that aren’t used frequently. And, in case you’re wondering how it’s possible to find quiet time in an open, sometimes, cavernous space - the inclusion of window seats, nooks and alcoves provide cozy spots for private time. Commodious kitchens with huge center islands with breakfast bars and cool bar stools are part of the pull away from formal dining rooms. Beverly Balk, an interior designer based in Glen Head, said that some clients tell her they don’t need as much space at a separate formal table because of the open kitchen’s center island. Still, people need adequate seating, albeit in the great room or family room “because most of them have families or extensions of families” who gather from time to time, even if it’s to watch a football game while they graze. Instead of a formal mahogany table, they might opt for an informal market table or a skirted table that adds “a little more funkiness” to the dining segment of the open space. Often, a smaller table for daily living can suffice. For parties and holiday meals, a top extension can provide room for a crowd. A custom cover for dining can also be fitted on top of a billiards table. In homes with traditional layouts, dining rooms are also increasingly multi-functional. Instead of formal, served dinners, some use the table for a buffet, installing a bar along one wall for cocktails and hors d’ouevres. Elsewhere, the formal dining room is being repurposed as a homework center or a place to play board games or cards. It can double as a library with a reading table or a music room with a baby grand piano, or as a guest room with a Murphy bed. Put to work as a home office, the dining room’s china cabinet can double as storage for supplies. (Push aside all the chairs but one, and voila, the table becomes a whopper of a desk! For the occasional dinner
party, put the other chairs back.) In homes with an open floor plan, “it can be fun to set aside a certain area for dining,” Beverly said. When not in use, table sides can be dropped or leaves removed. Down-sizers are among those foregoing a formal dining room. They could ask their grown kids to host Thanksgiving or a Passover seder. But on a regular basis, down-sizers still “have to have a place to sit down and have a cup of coffee” whether that’s in the living room or great room. And, a cafe table may be more cozy than an oak table that seats eight. In fact, the new dining room requires “more careful planning,” depending on people’s usage and needs, Beverly says. “Do
they need to have a formal space or does the great room provide a multitude of answers to whatever their needs might be?” The new informality shows in other ways. Instead of the matched sets of yesteryear, dining spaces are incorporating “a selection of chairs.” Perhaps four chairs of one style and four of another, or with seats upholstered in different colors. “They can be far more creative with dining rooms because they are less formal,” Beverly said. Floating banquettes or sofas to one side of a table help to delineate the space in a home with an open layout. Beverly likes to design her dining rooms “with two faces” -- the dining table area and a lounge seating space.
“It’s nice to have a place to sit down and have a drink before dinner,” Beverly says. “It adds to the coziness and warmth of the room.” She created one such dining room recently at a designer show house at Hempstead House at the Sands Point Preserve. The formal dining room was huge with a floor-toceiling fireplace and extensive millwork. She used whites in varying fabrics for both the sofa in the seating area and the 84-inch round dining table (which could fold in half for a smaller space.) Strings of chunks of glass resembling raw diamonds cascaded from a drum shade chandelier. Beverly added, “You are not going to fill it up with a gigantic dining table and 42 chairs.” It’s the new face of the dining room. SE

FEATURE STORY
BREEDING STARS
ARE WE PUSHING OUR CHILDREN TOO HARD? By LAURIE NADEL
“When you look at the research on happiness, academic achievement is not an indicator. Connection to family, friends and community tops the list,” said Vicki Ables Director of Race to Nowhere. Image from”Race to Nowhere” courtesy of Reel Link Films. 40 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 38 36
Every Saturday morning, four year old Jessica Chen of Dix Hills finishes her breakfast, gathers her backpack and waits for her dad to drive her to a Mandarin class in Old Westbury. “Whenever I read her a story in English, I ask her to translate it into Mandarin,” says her father, a vice-president of a financial services firm. His family immigrated to New York when he was five years old. His wife’s family immigrated when she was two. Having grown up in bilingual homes, they do not think that enrolling their four-year old in language school is putting too much pressure on her. “If you look at children in Europe, they grow up speaking several languages. We believe that children have a natural ability to learn languages if you start them early,” he says. In an increasingly global society, it makes sense for our children to learn more than one language. But enrolling preschoolers in traditional language classes, or later, hiring tutors when an A student gets an A-minus, or steering them into extra-curricular activities solely because it “looks good” on college applications, raises questions about whether we, as parents, are pushing our kids too hard. Setting high expectations has both plusses and minuses: On the one hand, children learn how to learn and how to take tests. These skills will be needed throughout their academic careers. On the other hand, setting the bar too high can lead to excessive stress, anxiety, depression, fear of failure, low self-esteem, and burnout. “Parents who live vicariously through their children can cause damage,” says Adrienne Levine, a licensed social worker whose private practice is in Roslyn. “I tell kids in ninth grade who report they are being pressured by their mothers, ‘You can be successful if you are not an A-plus student and don’t go to an Ivy League college.’” Living up to parents’ expectations can take a serious psychological and physical toll. From the time he entered kindergarten, Michael Bernstein told his teachers and classmates that his mother said he was going to Harvard. From first grade onwards, he consistently scored in the top three percent of his class and excelled in extra-curricular activities. But the price of academic success was high. By the time Michael reached high school, he had an ulcer. He frequently said that if he did not get into Harvard, his life would be over. Fortunately, he was accepted there. At least, it seemed fortunate at the time. But Michael hated it. By his sophomore year, this promising young man had developed an addiction to cocaine. Apocryphal? Not really, according to Dr. Beth Fohrmann, a psychotherapist in Smithtown and Great Neck who observed that in her private practice the rates of depression, anxiety and panic attacks among teenagers has doubled in the past 20 years. “There is an increasing need that kids feel for perfection,” she says, noting that the pursuit
of academic achievement leads to over-scheduling and insufficient sleep. “It’s almost like they feel they are in a race that only certain people will win, ” she says, adding that the “all-or-nothing” mindset leads some to cheat “because they feel that if they don’t do well in exams, they won’t do well in life.” This assumption is challenged in The Race to Nowhere, a documentary that examines the impact that too much pressure is having on American students. The director of Race to Nowhere, Vicki Abeles says,”There is absolutely no evidence that over-testing, over-scheduling and the relentless pressure to achieve leads to better educational outcomes. Race to Nowhere brings communities together to talk about the need for radical local, regional and national change.” Dr. Fohrmann sees it this way: “When you look at the research on happiness, academic achievement is not an indicator. Connection to family, friends and community tops the list.” She adds. “That connection gets sacrificed. Kids don’t have time for family and friends.” Still, the need to perform well on standardized tests is non-negotiable for collegebound students. Competition for admission to top colleges has increased, giving rise to a burgeoning industry: independent college consulting. According to a report in the Huffington Post, 26 percent of students applying to college this year are using an independent college consultant, compared to ten years ago when fewer than 10 percent of college applicants worked with independent educational consultants (I.E.C.’s). An I.E.C.’s services can range from tailoring a student’s extra-curricular resume starting as early as 8th grade to coaching senior year students through their college essays. Fees run into thousands of dollars per student. Michael Binder, founder of Your College Navigator in Woodbury, believes the process of getting a student positioned to apply is “all about marketing.” Starting as early as 9th grade, Michael helps each client choose classes and extra-curricular activities that will ultimately create a compelling story intended to make the client more appealing to the colleges of his or her choice. He says, “If you want to lose 20 pounds by next summer, do you start now or in May? It’s a marathon, not a sprint.” Understanding the difference between excessive stress and academic success is the key that Jason Stadler uses to unlock each student’s potential at Future U in Woodbury. Future U offers weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions geared to each student’s learning style and practice tests. “If we coach kids to become better test takers, they may be able to go to better schools. But this is not the end of our students’ education. It may well be the beginning of many years of college and graduate school,” he says. “We start out academic but our role is getting them to believe they can do it. They are here for a season but we are gearing them up for a championship,” he says. “We are giving kids skills for the future.” SE

DESIGNERS SHOWCASE
GOLD COAST REDUX: Sands Point’s Historic Hempstead House Presents A Gatsby-worthy Designer Showhouse By M.C. SUSSMAN
The splendor of Hempstead House begins at the front door, which opens onto a 60-foot high foyer. Against one wall is the mansion’s newly restored Wurlitzer Opus 445 Theatre Organ, made of oak. Music from it once reverberated through designed openings in the floor. Beyond, the sunken Palm Court, once home to an aviary and 150 species of rare orchids and plants, is now a graceful, elegant space that can be rented for weddings and other formal events. For the show house, it was set up as a cafe with tables on which to enjoy refreshments. Hempstead House, the extravagant 50,000 square foot 1912 Gold Coast Tudor-style mansion built by Howard Gould, the son of a railroad tycoon, was the epitome of the grandeur and elegance of the Gatsby era. In 1917, it became the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim. The veritable castle was outfitted with towers and columns, stained and leaded glass, gold leaf ceilings, carved stone gargoyles, red velvet draperies, Flemish tapestries, imported Jacobean antiques and art by the masters Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. But after Daniel Guggenheim passed away in 1930, his wife liquidated the mansion’s valuable artwork, tapestries, and furnishings and downsized to Mille Fleurs, a smaller home on the property. During World War II, Hempstead House was used to temporarily house 75 British refugee children. In 1946, the U.S. Navy acquired the property to use as a naval training center. In the process, many of the mansion’s original features such as a gold leaf ceiling and carved oak woodwork from a 17th century Spanish palace in the billiard room were destroyed or removed. Nassau County acquired the estate in 1967, turning 128 acres into a park. In the ensuing years, Hempstead House was the site of several designer show houses. The most recent, held in November, was called “Titans of Busi38 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
ness and the Best of Design.” Sponsored by the Friends of Sands Point Preserve, several of the mansion’s spaces were reinvented. Besides helping return Gold Coast mansions to their former glory, designer show houses are a great way to check out the work of top interior designers. In the dining room, with its massive, carved sandstone fireplace and dark wood paneled walls, designer Beverly Balk used various textures of white fabric to recreate the “old” as “new and glamorous”. Ribbons with chunks of glass resembling raw diamonds cascaded from an oversized lampshade hanging from the 16-foot beamed ceiling. Likewise, the 84-inch round dining table was draped with a white tablecloth and opulently set with Orrefors and Kosta Boda glass, white china and a multitude of white candlesticks in varying heights, surrounded by white leather Echo chairs from Tomasella Furniture. To one side of the room was a seating group with a white sofa, plump with cushions and cozily curved on each end, illuminated by a white Lola floor lamp. Stone gargoyles punctuate the lofty ceiling and peer from the floor to ceiling sandstone fireplace in the sum-
mer living room, which overlooks the back lawn and the Long Island Sound beyond. Designer Keith Baltimore of Port Washington’s Baltimore Design Group added a touch of whimsy to the mammoth space with multiple colorful oversized striped lampshade chandeliers, a claret
red sectional sofa and twin billiards tables. The walnut paneled library, with its leaded glass windows and built in bookcases, window seat and fireplace, was copied from the palace of King James I. Designers Barbara Marcone and Janet Block of Classic Galleries started their updated design scheme with a William Morris area rug in autumnal shades of browns, caramels and sage as a backdrop for four seating groups. “We wanted to keep within the feeling of the home,” Janet said, yet make sure it was “new and fresh but warm and comfortable,” conducive to grabbing a book or a Kindle or Nook, doing needlework or playing Angry Birds on an iPad. She explained that although bound books may be on the decline these days, libraries in major homes still feature collections and are used as retreats. “It’s the quiet room,” Janet added. “There’s no TV.” Upstairs, designer Robin Liberatore of Robinteriors created a modern equestrian-themed “Derby Room” laced with vintage finds including a striking red backgammon table. “A Room of One’s Own,” a bedroom fitting the heyday of Hempstead House, with a nod to Virginia Woolf and the Bohemian artists of the Bloomsbury Group of London was curated with painted furniture, an antique typewriter and framed reproductions, by Karli Hagedorn,
the chairman of the Friends of Sands Point Preserve, and Jean-Marie Posner, the executive director. Because Hempstead House is frequently the venue for sumptuous weddings these days, designer Liz Cordeiro chose the modern bride as her inspiration for “The Marriage Suite.” On the wall near the door is a button that once signaled the help. It now reads, “Press for Champagne.” Fur throws accent the canopied bed and a Hermes scarf is framed on one wall. The eclectic design also includes a leopard skin chair, wallpaper that resembles mother-of-pearl, a Lucite table and a standing tri- panel mirror perfect for the bride to get dressed for the special moment. Designer Inaa Elias Tahhan, owner of “Le Decor De Maisons De Luxe,” designed the black, silver and gray gentleman’s study as if it belonged to her “titan,” designer Alexander McQueen. Inaa used two black velvet chairs with crystal buttons and silver jaguars as armrests as a focal point and upholstered a deep sofa to match. For added pizzazz, she packed the fireplace with cut logs and bottles of wine. “I want him to sit, relax, have a cigar and come back with fresh ideas in mind,” Inaa said. “At the end, I like to have this comfy feeling.” SE SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 39

Dr. Jacono’s natural sensibility goes beyond his commitment to providing patients with a refreshed, unaltered-looking appearance. A dedication to a natural aesthetic informs the very essence of the space where Dr. Jacono slows the aging process and revitalizes the spirit, and it extends to his own demeanor, his wavy, longish hair casually styled. Within the confines of Dr. Jacono’s spacious, 10,000-square-foot Northern Boulevard facility, which encompasses the New York Center for Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery and the adjoining JSPA medical day spa, subtly textured walls and muted browns and beiges, as well as soft lighting, combine to form a sophisticated design scheme. The purposeful setting offers a quiet refuge for undergoing and recovering from surgical and cosmetic procedures. While two onsite hospital-code operating rooms, four exam rooms and five recovery bays comprise the cutting-edge surgical facility, JSPA strikes a serene note with music and custom aromatherapy blends that join together to create the ambiance of an exquisite resort spa. Within this holistic setting, the renewal process begins, as minimally-invasive non-surgical facial treatments, such as lasers, injectable fillers and peels, combat the visible signs of aging. Stylish changing rooms, premium amenities and the recovery area’s understated, relaxed mood, along with refreshments, such as delicate herbal teas, add up to a sumptuous experience. “I don’t prescribe treatments,” said Dr. Jacono. “I look to see what patients are trying to achieve and
can give them options.” Prices can range anywhere between $1,000 and $4,000 for a non-surgical wrinkle filler, depending on the vials required, to between $20,000 and $40,000 for a facelift. Seated in his tastefully designed office amid framed degrees, certificates and citations, Dr. Jacono recalled the defining moment that led him to become a plastic surgeon. He was about nine years old when he sat on the school bus next to a girl who suffered ridicule because of her cleft palate. But once the deformity was corrected, it wasn’t only her appearance that changed but “how people responded to her,” recalled Dr. Jacono. “I was amazed.” Plastic surgery is more than his life’s work but his calling. Guided by the principles of the “the golden proportion,” which considers the shape of the face, defined by the chin and the cheeks, and the correct ratio between each facial feature, he works to restore patients’ faces to their natural-looking, youthful proportions. He has also innovated minimally invasive surgical techniques. “It’s very important to feel confident about our appearance,” said Dr. Jacono, a Freeport native who grew up in Ronkonkoma and Kings Park and now lives in Manhattan. “I can see how surgery positively
impacts people’s lives, empowering them to live fully.” Performing about 1,200 facial surgeries a year, Dr. Jacono, who also has a Manhattan office, treats a wide range of patients, including newly single individuals getting ready to reenter the dating game, battered women suffering with fractured faces, children from the Third World traveling to the United States to correct congenital facial abnormalities and jobseekers experiencing ageism in the workforce. A graduate of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Dr. Jacono received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was admitted to Alpha Omega Alpha, the prestigious medical school honor society. He is associated with North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York. A solo practitioner, he shares his knowledge as an author of more than three-dozen articles published in professional journals, including the Journal of American Medical Association Facial Plastic Surgery, and in lectures and presentations at
major medical conferences. In addition, he has written two consumer books on plastic surgery. Last year, Oprah Winfrey’s network, OWN, presented Facing Trauma, a series that followed Dr. Jacono as he and his team worked to heal women who were disfigured because of violent circumstances. On the humanitarian front, he travels overseas about three weeks a year on volunteer missions that allow those whose faces have been disfigured by birth, cancer or trauma to benefit from his and other doctors’ skills and experience. He has reconstructed faces blemished by cleft palates in such places as Central America, South America and Southeast Asia. “There’s adversity everywhere, but it’s not about focusing on the sadness but on change,” said Dr. Jacono, who traveled to Quito, Ecuador last March with HUGS, or Help us Give Smiles Foundation. Among his other philanthropic efforts, he has served as national chairman and is currently the senior advisor of Face to Face, a national project offering pro bono consultation and surgery to victims of domestic violence. Despite the demands of his professional life, Dr. Jacono, the father of four children, ages 16, 14, 8 and 3½ years old, carved out time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro last summer with his eldest. With his 14-year-old daughter, he takes a weekly studio drawing class to further his artistic sensibilities. His aesthetic perspective and skills notwithstanding, Dr. Jacono, when asked, says he doesn’t mentally toy with the ways he could improve the faces of individuals who cross his path outside the confines of his office — unless they exhibit below-par work. “I don’t look at God’s work and see how I would do it differently,” he says. “There’s beauty in anything.” SE

SOCIAL SIZING:
~
EXERCISE CLASSES in the COMFORT OF HOME By LINDA SASLOW
There’s a new word that may soon be added to our dictionaries: “Social-Sizing.” Definition: A blend of exercising and socializing, most often done in a cozy, friendly and non-threatening setting—offering personalized attention, expert instruction and motivation. Jamie Dardashtian, 35, from Woodbury, is on board with this addition to our lexicon. “I used to work out on my own, and I never wanted to do it,” admitted the young mother of two. Participating in a small-group pilates class in the Muttontown home of Faryll Marinoff, 34, is a different story. “I come faithfully Tuesdays and Fridays,” Jamie said. “It’s motivating to exercise in a group and social because I have friends to do it with.” For Jamie, the added perk of exercising with her best friend is the after-class reward: time together for coffee or a manicure. Faryll, 34, who teaches the pilates classes four days a week in her living room turned workout studio, explained
44 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
the allure of “social-sizing.” “The girls can get their own groups together for exercise, and they like the oneon-one attention,” said Faryll, herself a mother of two. “Many of them don’t like the scene at gyms, and feel that it’s very impersonal. Here, it’s just the opposite.” Just ask Lauren Cagner, a mother of two, who quit her gym and now comes once or twice a week to Faryll’s classes. “I got lost in the classes at the gym,” recalled Lauren, 35, from Woodbury. “And I never knew if I was doing anything right.” On a recent Tuesday morning, right after dropping their children off at nursery school, five young mothers lined their mats up on top of Faryll’s Persian rug. They proceeded to collect the necessary props: a set of pink and purple bands, twopound weights and the most important piece, the ‘magic circle.’ “Squeeze the ‘magic circle’ between your thighs, bend those knees into table top and pull your abs in,” Faryll coached.
“Point your toes and lengthen. Arms out. Legs out.” Moving from one student to the next, Faryll made adjustments to their form, as she continued to coach her students through the hour-long class. Pilates works every part of your body and includes crunches, weights, resistance exercises and stretching—all at a reasonable cost of $25 per class. “Are your outer hips burning?” Faryll asked. “Good!” she added as she adjusted Melanie Mergentime’s hips. Despite Melanie’s groan, the 38-year-old mother of two from Syosset wasn’t complaining. “I love the class,” said Melanie, a Tuesday regular at Faryll’s classes. “It’s nice and quiet here, and I know that I need to have my form corrected.” Michele Rogowsky, from Dix Hills, is also a ‘social-sizing’ advocate. For the past nine years, Michele has been teaching Barre classes in the homes of her clients. “Half of my clients have installed barres in their basements,” said Michele, 45 and the mother of three boys. “Exercise classes in your home are easy and social,” she said. “Most of my clients are moms who revolve their schedules around dropping off and picking up their kids. In gyms and exercise studios, there are rules like ‘no talking,’ ‘no phones,’ ‘no coming in late or leaving early,’ but this is a different atmosphere where you can walk in with a cup of coffee and chat during class. It’s much more personalized than being one of 40 or 50 sardines squished into a class.” Sara Intonato also understands the allure of social-sizing. Sara, a certified yoga instructor from Huntington, teaches private and
small group Ashtanga yoga classes in the homes of her clients, as well as larger classes (up to 45 in a class) in a Syosset athletic club and a yoga studio in Woodbury. “My clients lead very busy lives,” said Sara, 32 and the mother of two. “The greatest benefit of in-home yoga classes is that they’re more convenient and there’s more personalized attention. In yoga, technique is very important, and if you don’t have the correct technique, it’s easy to be injured.” For Faryll, Michele and Sara, the growing popularity of “socialsizing” has become an opportunity to combine their expertise and their passion into a business. Eighteen months ago when Faryll moved to Long Island from Manhattan, a young mother who knew that she was a certified pilates instructor, asked if she would teach a class with several friends in her Roslyn home. Word spread quickly and Faryll decided to move the classes to her own home. For Michele, when the karate studio where she had been renting space for her classes closed, her career direction changed. “After six months of not being able to find a suitable space, one of my clients suggested holding class in her home,” she recalled. One class led to another, and today, Michele teaches between 10 and 15 classes a week. Sara is continuing to build her in-home practice, now at about six classes a week, charging $160 for 75 minutes, $200 for 90 minutes—which of course can be shared among the students in a small group class. Beyond the satisfaction of a blossoming career, the best part, said Faryll, is that “I’ve made many new friends through “social-sizing.” SE

family, found the hamlet’s prime real estate suitable for their palatial mansions and sprawling estates. The move to what became known as the Gold Coast was “a major turning point in the Syosset-Woodbury area’s history,” says historian and author Tom Montalbano, “a point at which a more ‘sophisticated’ class of people discovered our area and transformed it from a sleepy farming community into a bustling playground for the rich and famous.” Only a couple of Woodbury’s Gatsby-era Gold Coast mansions still stand today, but the 5.06 mile leafy hamlet of rolling hills in the Town of Oyster Bay still offers a measure of natural beauty and fancy homes valued from $600,000 to more than $2 million along with a first-rate school district. Woodbury’s children attend schools in the toprated Syosset Central School District, which has seven elementary schools, including the Walt Whitman Elementary School named for the poet said to have taught in a one-room school on the site. There are two middle schools and one high school. Some 98 percent of Syosset High School’s class of 2013 is college-bound and 18 students were national merit finalists. Nearly 10 years ago Rachel and Michael Rosenberg, then Syosset residents, were thrilled that one day their daughter, then an infant, would be enrolled in the Syosset Central School district. Even sweeter was the possibility of living in Woodbury, with its strong sense of community. In 2006 the Rosenbergs sold their Syosset coop and bought a 5,000-square-foot center-hall colonial in The Gates. They haven’t looked back. Nice restaurants, night life, young people, shopping, and activities for the kids abounds. “It’s a lot of fun,” says Rachel, 41, a teacher, who now has three children. “Plus you are close to the city and the Hamptons, and you can just jump on the LIE or the Northern State. It’s so convenient.” SE

Atlantis Meets Old Westbury By LAURIE NADEL
Flowing water represents success and wealth in feng shui, the ancient Chinese system that harmonizes elements within the home to maximize its strength. At this special seven bedroom mansion, the element of water -- think Atlantis meets Old Westbury -- creates excitement, surprise, and pleasure, all of which enhance the splendor of this 10,000 square foot Mediterranean home set on three lush acres. A gated private entrance of black wrought-iron gates with gold medallions opens to a landscaped drive that leads to the majestic brick mansion, its 10-foot high mahogany front doors with elliptical windows framed in wrought iron and flanked by two stone lions. One’s first encounter with water is a large koi pond in front of the residence. Details throughout the house include exotic wood floors set in Versailles patterns, mahogany walls in the formal areas, and a hand painted ceiling dome fresco in the living room. The rooms are generously proportioned. On the second floor, all six bedrooms have en suite baths. The master suite has a large sitting room and oversized bathroom. Naturally Delicious: Good-tasting and Good for Your Health By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO

Savvy Long Islanders are expecting more than meat and potatoes when they dine out these days, and throughout the island, restaurants and markets are obliging. Following the nation’s burgeoning Fresh Food Movement, establishments have sprung up in Nassau and Suffolk where local, organic and/or vegan options rule. Here’s a sampling of some of these healthy gourmet eateries and delivery services.
VEGAN VARIETY Forbes magazine named high-end vegan cuisine as one of the Top 10 Food Trends of 2013, and a number of Long Island restaurants have added meat-and-dairy-free menus to their regular fare. Ariana in Huntington celebrates the foods of Afghanistan with a modern twist. Along with the expected lamb and beef dishes, there’s a separate vegan menu at this upscale restaurant. Entrees include Aushak Kadu, savory, homemade ravioli filled with roasted pumpkin, topped with marinara sauce. Bolanee consists of turnovers filled with potatoes and leeks. Among other choices, the vegan menu offers a sampler of Afghani-inspired meatless, dairy-free dishes. After dinner, vegan options abound for dessert, like the key lime pie, dairy-free soy ice cream and more. The Purple Elephant’s chef David Intonato has worked at high-end restaurants including Manhattan’s Drake Hotel, Ritz Carlton and Dos Caminos as well as Centerport’s Mill Pond House and Jamesport Manor Inn. Now he brings his culinary expertise to a casual café and food market in Northport Village. Offering a variety of vegan and vegetarian options, The Purple Elephant also features local, sustainable seafood, grass-fed meats and more for those hard-core carnivores who are married to vegans. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the café’s dinner menu includes items like the eggless, dairy-free, breaded eggplant topped with tasty marinara sauce and cheeseless “mozzarella” served over organic linguine. The vegan “chicken” Tikka Masala features a luscious, creamy soy yogurt tomato masala sauce with coconut milk, and bits of meat-free “chicken” served over a warm bed of toasted quinoa.
ORGANIC BURGERS AND MORE Bareburger opened its first Long Island restaurant in June, but the micro-chain already has an established presence throughout NYC. The bright, airy space features a long line of living greenery down its middle. Bright yellow walls feature several wide screen TVs showing cartoons in this family-friendly space. Eco-friendly tabletops were created from storm-salvaged wood, booths are lined with recycled vinyl, ceilings feature recycled barn siding and floors are constructed from bamboo. Most ingredients are organic, and many of the vendors are local. Salads, sandwiches and sides abound. Burgers run the gamut from those featuring familiar as well as exotic meats like ostrich, bison and wild boar, to three types of organic veggie burgers: the mushroom burger, farmers quinoa veggie burger and black bean burger. Opened in May 2013, Fresh Hamptons is owned by chef Todd Jacobs, former executive chef at the American Hotel and owner of the former Tierra Mar restaurant, as well as Atlantica at the Allegria Hotel. The ample, rustic space is lined with wood reclaimed from three barns. A bar sits on one end of the restaurant, and in winter, a fireplace blazes to create a cozy atmosphere. Couples as well as families enjoy dining here for lunch and dinner. Almost all their vegetables come from Dale and Betty’s, a certified organic farm just down the road. They also incorporate ingredients from their own organic garden in front of the restaurant, where herbs like parsley, oregano and basil, as well as zucchini, kiwis and raspberries thrive. From grass-fed beef burgers to veggie burgers, there’s something for every taste here. In addition to fresh seafood and local poultry,
an extensive vegan menu features starters like the curried pumpkin soup, salads made with locally sourced ingredients and more. One vegan main course option is a combination platter of five sides like the honey-glazed carrots, greens sautéed with garlic, the tempting Savoy coleslaw, and others. PIZZA WITH A TWIST 3 Brothers Pizza Café started out as a typical pizzeria. In 2009, Jay Astafa, one of owner Andy Astafa’s three sons, suggested adding vegan items to the regular list of pepperoni pizzas and more. The result was a mouthwatering, Italian-inspired menu with delectable appetizers like the oyster mushroom “calamari” – fried oyster mushrooms with the mouthfeel of squid - and dairy-free “mozzarella” sticks. Pasta dishes are plentiful at this Farmingdale cafe, but the “ricotta” is made from cashews and tofu, so vegan visitors to the cozy restaurant can enjoy stuffed shells, fettuccine alfredo and other favorites. You can also create your own brick oven pizza or calzone with regular, whole wheat or gluten-free crust, with a wide selection of items like roasted peppers, grilled Portobello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and more.
FROM LOCAL FARMS TO YOUR TABLE If you prefer to create culinary creations in your own kitchen and want to use local and/or organic ingredients, choose from several home delivery services servicing Long Island. Rustic Roots Delivery serves Long Island with local, organic food that is often shipped within a day or two of being harvested. The year-round service provides weekly baskets with produce like cauliflower, microgreens, squash and a variety of fruit, as well as local eggs, raw honey and maple syrup, local organic meat and local organic cheese. Farm 2 Kitchen Long Island started delivering throughout Long Island in May. Their local produce includes organic and non-organic items. Their network of sustainable farms includes Satur Farms in Cutchogue, Sang Lee Farms in Peconic, and Spy Coast Bee Farm in Setauket Harbor. Urban Organic delivers weekly boxes of organic produce and serves most of the tri-state area, including Long Island. The produce list varies from week to week and may consist of vegetables like kale, carrots and garnet yams, while fruits may include Valencia oranges, Bartlett pears, kiwis and bananas. SE

ASIAN BISTRO’S FABULOUS FUSION By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO
Juan, Winnie
It’s a fantastic addition to the North Shore restaurant scene. Opened in Woodbury in December, MoCa Asian Bistro offers delectable sushi, sashimi and Asian fusion in an opulent setting. With soaring ceilings, freestanding tables, private booths and banquettes, this beautiful, upscale restaurant, provides a serene backdrop to Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese cuisine with muted lighting, flickering candles at each table and soft music in the background. The menu offers a wide variety of delicacies. A good starter is the Coconut Seafood Chowder, brimming with flavorful chunks of lobster, shrimp, scallops and clams combined in a

smooth, sweet coconut consommé. Another excellent appetizer is the MoCa Roll. The flavors are well balanced with pieces of lobster and crabmeat and more, and an occasional burst of mango sweetness. The outside is topped with tobiko (flying fish eggs). A good choice of entree is the MoCa Sashimi dinner, 18 pieces of the chef’s special daily selection. Meat lovers will enjoy the Filet Mignon with seasonal greens, marinated with a spicy black Betsy Elliott and Stephanie Antel
pepper sauce to please those who relish piquant flavors. Customers may request more or less spicy foods, and there are gluten free and vegetarian options as well. The extensive wine menu is complemented by a wide range of cold, hot and even sparkling sake. If you appreciate a strong flavor reminiscent of Scotch, then choose the Kurumatsu Hakushika, a cedar-aged sake that will not disappoint. Dessert is not to be missed. My favorite is the Hazelnut Truffle. Complementing a core of luscious, dark chocolate, velvety smooth hazelnut gelato is crowned with praline hazel-

nut and meringue. Chocoholics must try the Chocolate Trilogy, a rich chocolate cake base layered with dark chocolate mousse, milk chocolate mousse and a final layer of white chocolate mousse. With ample portions and a wide range of options, you can visit MoCa again and again and always find something new to savor. The restaurant also has locations in Hewlett and Forest Hills. SE
