There is a characteristic chill in the air; people are bringing out layers. So too are the chefs on our Island, layering flavours by introducing heavier, richer cuts of meat from local butchers, deftly pairing seasonal root vegetables requiring a bit of extra care and attention to get just the right result. Dried herbs resulting from the Island’s summer exuberance dance along the fat-lined sinews of the meats and roasted vegetables, covered in extra virgin olive oil.
With fall comes table festivities unrivalled by other seasons and of course the traditional foods and beverages that signal the coming holidays.
I hope the fall edition provides inspiration with holiday beverage options, unique gift ideas, and delectable recipes that will help make entertaining a delight. We introduce chef Jordon Burnett from The Private Room, how to choose a Bordeaux for gifting to your favourite hostess, an incredible coconut cake recipe to serve at your holiday celebrations and some of my favourite gift ideas for the foodie on your list.
May the coming holidays bring you joy and comfort as well as family from far and wide.

Burnett grew up in the Yukon and was introduced to cooking by his mother. The menu he offers to guests of The Private Room focuses on classic fine dining, the type of food his parents would have enjoyed on a night out.
PEIL. Tell us a little about where you grew up and what inspired you to go into culinary.
I grew up in the Yukon in the 70s. During this time, I was introduced to cooking by my mom. She was an excellent cook, preparing fresh food from our garden. One of my favourites was her chicken noodle soup made with fresh pasta. My mom had a fantastic cookbook, “The American Women’s Cookbook,” published in 1962. This book became mine in Christmas of 2000. It covers cuisines from every region of North America. I reference it often.
PEIL. The Private Room offers some pretty stunning views, making it a fantastic destination for fine dining. What sets your restaurant apart in the Summerside dining scene?
Residents of Summerside are looking for something outside the box yet recognizable. The menu I have created for the Private Room does this. It focuses on classic fine dining, and I know this is the type of food my parents would have enjoyed on a night out. I often would see them enjoying Alaskan king crab and porterhouse steak. I want to bring that kind of joy to our guests.
PEIL. Silver Fox Entertainment Center is a community hub and The Private Room really seems to add another level of elegance to it. How would you describe your location to prospective guests?
The Private Room stands out from most restaurants with its floorto-ceiling windows that provide a romantic view of the marina. Its intimate setting accommodates up to forty guests, making everyone leave feeling extra special.
PEIL. The menu looks great. What’s your favourite dish or combination of flavours presented on it?
The menu is designed to pair an appetizer with an entrée. It covers the desires of most guests. I’d choose the bacon-wrapped scallops for the appetizer. This choice stands out because of the combination of housesmoked bacon, fresh basil, and a maple balsamic glaze that elevates the classic dish. For the entrée, I’d opt for the beef short ribs, served with a milk stout sauce. When designing the menu, I aimed to elevate traditional dishes, and the idea of pairing ribs with my re-imagination of Guinness gravy immediately came to mind. Desserts change weekly, but my favourite so far is the chocolate pot de crème. It’s perfect for chocolate lovers.
PEIL: Do you have a mentor or someone that you have looked to for inspiration whether inside or outside your industry?
I had a chance to work with Chef James Smith at the Cranberry Bistro in the Yukon. He taught me the balance of flavour. One lesson I remember is when we made beef soup, and he made all his soups from vegetable stock. I’d always used beef stock. So I asked him, “How are you going to make it taste like beef?” His response was, “Just add beef.”
PEIL: Can you describe for us your perfect dining experience, whether real or on your bucket list?
I had an opportunity to work with Chef Mark McEwan during Beef and Blues in 2015. He was awesome to watch cook; everything he did had a purpose. No panic, just precision. I felt inspired. We were cooking for a couple hundred people; I’d like to cook with him again and share a meal.
“The menu is designed to pair an appetizer with an entree. It covers the desires of most guests.”

After all the planning, organizing, cooking, and cleaning that go into preparing your beautiful holiday dinner, it’s time to kick back, unwind, and savour the moment. What better way to embrace the holiday spirit than with a delightful digestif?
Did you know that the tradition of digestifs traces back to medieval monasteries and apothecaries? These afterdinner drinks were originally crafted to aid digestion and bring a sense of closure to meals. Many believe that these elixirs possess medicinal qualities, making them perfect for those postfeast moments of “Why did I eat so much?”
Our Notables Specialty Product Advisor, Cheryl, has recently discovered her love for Amaro, a captivating category of digestifs that showcases a range of styles and flavours. Amaro, which translates to “bitter” in Italian, is just one delightful option among many. A typical digestif can include a blend of herbs, spices, botanicals, and even bark, with some concoctions boasting as many as 130 ingredients. It’s truly an olfactory adventure!
Imagine savouring a dark, rich digestif in your favourite glass, perhaps over a single ice ball. The experience is magical—luxurious and indulgent. Picture yourself enjoying this delight under twinkling lights, with a cherished book in hand, or surrounded by the laughter and joy of loved ones.
To dive deeper into the world of digestifs, visit Cheryl at Notables. She’s eager to share her knowledge about the history and variety of these intriguing beverages.
Don’t miss the chance to enhance your experience by attending our upcoming tasting events! Purchase tickets and learn more at liquorpei.com.

Ella’s Forest is a 400-acre family farm in the heart of PEI, named after the owner’s daughter, Ella. “We specialize in growing organic wild blueberries, which we turn into powder and, more recently, juice.” Owner William Bevan said, “Our products are exported to countries like Australia, Taiwan, China, Switzerland, and Vietnam. From the beginning, we have been certified organic. Though it is a challenging way to farm, we believe in selling only what we would consume ourselves.”
Their organic blueberry powder is a fine, purple product packed with antioxidants and perfect for smoothies, yogurt, ice cream, or sprinkled on cereal and oatmeal. It can also be added to pancake batter or used to naturally flavour cakes, cupcakes, and icing—offering endless healthy possibilities.
“Each 250g bag of our powder contains over 4,000 organic wild blueberries, grown right here on our farm in PEI.” Says Bevan, “With no added sugars, oils, preservatives, or fillers, it

The berries are harvested from naturally occurring low-bush blueberry plants, found only in select areas of North America. These berries are rich in anthocyanins, with four times the levels of cultivated blueberries. “We dehydrate our berries at low temperatures, preserving both their flavour and nutritional value,” Bevan says.
You can find Ella’s Forest’s products on their website and in select stores across the Island.

Ah, Bordeaux! This enchanting French region has nurtured Vitis vinifera—the noble European grape varietals—for over 2,000 years. It’s home to legends like Château Pape Clément, one of the region’s first Grands Crus, with its inaugural harvest dating back to 1252. Talk about a vintage!
When I think about grapes, vines, and wines, I can’t help but draw parallels to people. Just like us, the vines thrive best in challenging conditions. They wrestle with inhospitable soils, bravely weather storms, and dig their roots deep into rugged terrain. It’s these resilient vines that produce wines rich in complexity, secrets, and stories—much like the fascinating individuals in our lives.
Gift-giving, especially in the context of wine, can be a deeply personal and thoughtful gesture. Each bottle of Bordeaux tells a unique story, reflecting the terroir, the vintage, and the artistry of the winemakers.
As you choose gifts for the Bordeaux lover in your life, consider not only the wine itself but also the experiences and memories that come with it. Here are some delightful gift suggestions that are sure to please the Bordeaux wine enthusiast on your list.
Château Pape Clément (W0282Z)
This esteemed Grand Cru Classé wine is known for its rich flavours and aromatic complexity. Perfect for special occasions, it embodies the elegance and history of Bordeaux.
Château L’Eglise-Clinet (W0270Z) A gem from the Pomerol appellation, this wine offers a luxurious, velvety texture and notes of dark fruit. It’s a fantastic gift for those who appreciate the finesse of a high-quality Bordeaux.
Château Cos d’Estournel (W0247Z)
Renowned for its distinctive style and opulence, this wine from Saint-Estèphe is a great choice for collectors and those who enjoy bold, powerful wines with aging potential.
Château La Gaffelière 2018 -Special Anniversary Vintage (02194Y)This vintage is a wonderful way to celebrate a milestone. With its balance of fruit and structure, it showcases the unique terroir of Saint-Émilion.
Château Calon Ségur 2017 (02191Y)
This wine is celebrated for its aromatic complexity and aging potential. It’s an ideal gift for someone who enjoys exploring the nuances of Bordeaux wines over time.
Adding an Educational Touch
To enhance your gift, consider including a personalized note that shares the story of each château or vintage. For instance, you might mention that Château Pape Clément was named after Pope Clement V, who was born in Bordeaux and established the wine’s prestigious reputation. Or highlight how the terroir of Château La Gaffelière contributes to its unique character, blending limestone and clay soils to create complex flavour profiles.
Additionally, consider pairing your wine gift with accessories that elevate the wine-drinking experience. A high-quality corkscrew, an elegant decanter, or a set of crystal wine glasses can make your gift even more memorable.
By taking the time to understand and appreciate the history and artistry behind each bottle, you not only give a gift but also create an opportunity for shared experiences and deeper connections. Cheers to thoughtful gift-giving and the joy of Bordeaux!
Everything you need for the foodie's wish list can be found locally! This coconut cake is elegant and sophisticated yet very traditional and simple. It’s perfect for the holidays rich and delicious with the delicate appearance that brings to mind freshly fallen snow.
3 cups (360g) cake flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups (400g) granulated sugar*
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
1-1/3 cups unsweetened canned coconut milk, well shaken, at room temperature
2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
1 tsp coconut extract
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
6 large egg whites, at room temperature
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting
12 oz cream cheese, nearly at room temperature
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 tsp coconut extract
5 cups (590g) powdered sugar
1-1/2 cups shredded coconut
For the Cake:
Preheat oven to 350°F
Butter three nine-inch round cake pans and line bottom of each with a round of parchment paper; butter parchment paper and set pans aside.
Sift cake flour into a large mixing bowl, then add baking powder and salt and whisk mixture. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, blend together granulated sugar, butter and canola oil on medium speed until well combined. Scrape down bowl.
Add in egg yolks one at a time and mix until combined after each addition, then mix in coconut and vanilla extracts. Scrape down bowl.
Divide batter among prepared cake pans. Spread batter into an even layer and bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into centre of cake comes out clean, about 19 - 22 minutes.
Allow to cool in cake pan 510 minutes then run a knife along edges of cakes and invert each onto a wire rack to cool. Cool completely then cut tops to even as needed.
Frost top of one layer, add another layer and frost then top with last layer and frost top and sides. Place cake stand over a rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle cake evenly with shredded coconut, pressing gently on sides to adhere.
*If you like the cake a little less sweet you can use 1-3/4 cups granulated sugar. You can even use 2/3 the frosting amount but you'll only have a thin layer of frosting.
Add 1/3 of the flour mixture, blend until just combined. Add half of the coconut milk, mix just until combined. Mix in another 1/3 of the flour mixture followed by remaining coconut milk. Finish by mixing in last 1/3 of the flour mixture.
In a separate mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer, whip six egg whites with cream of tartar on mediumhigh speed until stiff (but not dry) peaks form.
Using a rubber spatula, carefully fold 1/3 of the egg whites into cake batter at a time and fold just combined after each addition; don't over-mix and deflate egg whites.
Store in an airtight container in refrigerator. Let rest at room temperature until no longer cold before serving.
For the Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting:
In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip butter with cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Mix in coconut extract. Add powdered sugar and whip on medium speed until smooth and fluffy.
Chill as needed if frosting seems runny (slightly runny is fine; once you get it frosted the coconut will help it stay in place).
Coconut Buttercream Frosting:
14 Tbsp (198g) butter, at room temperature (preferably 8 Tbsp unsalted 6 Tbsp salted)
3 cups (380g) powdered sugar
1/2 - 1 tsp coconut extract, to taste
2 - 3 Tbsp (45ml) canned coconut milk
METHOD
In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream butter until pale and fluffy.
Add in powdered sugar, coconut extract and two tablespoons of coconut milk and mix until pale and fluffy, while adding in another one tablespoon of coconut milk to thin if needed.

Hospice PEI is a community of caring individuals making each day count for Islanders and their families through their volunteer-led hospice support, comfort, and care programs, as well as advocacy and education for quality palliative and hospice care. Hospice PEI also supports Island families after a loved one’s death through their grief support services.
While death is a part of life, providing comfort and care for a loved one is not always easy to navigate. Hospice PEI’s programs and services are for anyone with a palliative or life-limiting diagnosis, and are there for anyone looking for help.
Formed in 1985, Hospice PEI offers a range of services for a person with a palliative or life-limiting diagnosis; caregiver support by providing companionship visits; help with navigation of services and supports and grief support to anyone who has experienced the loss of a person regardless of any hospice connection, along with providing education on death preparedness and readiness such as Advanced Care Planning.
“We really try to make the living part of their dying journey as meaningful, purposeful as possible and within the realities of where they are on their journey. We want to make each day count. Our focus is on the living part while recognizing and holding space for the journey they are on.”
-
Nancymarie Arsenault, Director of Hospice PEI
“Our supports and programs are tailored to meet the needs of each individual and their care recipients,” Nancymarie Arsenault, Hospice PEI’s director, says.
“We really try to make the living part of their dying journey as meaningful and purposeful as possible and within the realities of where they are on their journey. We want to make each day count. Our focus is on the living part while recognizing and holding space for the journey they are on.”
Each referral and request for Hospice PEI is treated individually, and each referral is based on many factors that ensure the best match is made, and that a care recipient's needs are addressed within the scope of Hospice PEI’s work. Referrals for any service come in weekly and are accessed and prioritized. Arsenault recommends checking out the organization's website for more information.
According to Arsenault, the staff and volunteers are the heart of Hospice PEI. “We have the most amazing staff and volunteers,” she says. “They are so dedicated and compassionate.” Many of Hospice PEI’s volunteers have had a connection to the organization in some form. “That emotional connection helps them to understand what a simple act of being there and listening has had on their own experiences,” Arsenault shares. “We have many volunteers who have been with us for over 10 years, some over 20 years. That’s so amazing when we think of the journeys they have been on with people who are no longer with us.”
Hospice PEI relies almost exclusively on fundraising and donations, which includes their annual “Dancing With the Stars” event, their main fundraiser, which is going into its twelfth year.
“I’m always amazed at the ones who say yes,” Arsenault says. “For every yes we get there are probably seven to eight nos. Over my time here I’ve seen some incredible performances and our stars have raised some impressive amounts of money that goes to support our important work.”
The organization also holds two other significant fundraisers, including the “Let Their Light Shine” campaign going into its 29th year, and its annual Hike for Hospice.
While most people think a hospice would be a sad place to work , Arsneault says her experience has been anything but. “For sure the work can be sad and there are tears but by gosh there is a lot of laughter. They are still living, making each moment count!
Changing the narrative of our work being from people are dying to people are living, and how do you want that to be until you are no longer living, makes our job more meaningful and impactful.”

Balancing fitness, health, and stress management is essential for living a fulfilling life. In today’s busy world, where people juggle numerous responsibilities, prioritizing physical and mental wellbeing can greatly enhance quality of life. Here’s why staying fit, healthy, and stressfree matters.
Regular physical activity is fundamental for building a stronger body, lowering the risk of chronic diseases, and promoting longevity. Exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, boosts cardiovascular health, and strengthens immunity.
Additionally, it improves muscle strength, flexibility, and balance,
reducing injury risk and supporting better mobility as we age. Activities like weight-bearing exercises are particularly beneficial, as they enhance bone density and lower osteoporosis risk. Furthermore, exercise can help regulate blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and the likelihood of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. In essence, staying active builds a foundation for a healthier, longer life.
The benefits of physical activity extend to mental health as well. Exercise releases endorphins, which act as natural mood enhancers, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. A balanced diet also supports mental well-being by providing the brain with essential nutrients, which aid mood regulation and energy levels. Eating whole foods, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive sugars contribute to clearer thinking and emotional stability.
Stress is a part of life, but effective stress management is crucial for both physical and mental health. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and mental health challenges. Techniques like exercise, meditation, yoga, and deep breathing help reduce stress, while engaging in hobbies, connecting with loved ones, and getting enough sleep further enhance mental wellbeing.
Leading a well-rounded lifestyle reduces burnout and boosts resilience, allowing you to face challenges with calm focus. Prioritizing self-care, such as joining a gym, hiring a personal trainer, enjoying a massage—even treating yourself to a soothing facial or a relaxing manicure—supports physical and mental wellness. In 2025, let the Island’s wellness experts guide you towards a lifestyle that promotes health, happiness, and balance.
Krista Doyle, the driving force behind Beast-Mode Mommas, describes herself as a proud mother, UPEI graduate, and world traveller. “My journey toward selfacceptance and health has been transformative,” she shares. For years, she struggled with substance abuse, stemming from self-doubt and a lack of purpose. “Fitness was always there, but misused— as a form of punishment rather than self-care,” Doyle explains. The birth of her first child shifted her perspective, inspiring her to create a community for women and mothers where they could find support, rebuild confidence, share joy, and regain strength.

and outdoor space, offering a supportive environment where women can reconnect with themselves and prioritize their wellness. Since December 2020, Beast-Mode Mommas’ online community has been incredibly rewarding. “Monthly online challenges help women build consistency and commitment,” Doyle explains. In January, they’ll kick off a Holiday Detox challenge—a ten-week program offering daily workouts, weekly checkins, and nutritional guidance, plus a cash prize for extra motivation.
Launching alongside this challenge, Big Changes Bootcamp is an eightweek program for women ready for significant lifestyle shifts. This supportive journey celebrates small wins and offers compassionate guidance. Doyle is also excited about her MPS Scar Release Therapy offering, an FDA- and Health Canada-approved treatment that helps reduce scar pain and improve tissue healing.
The MOM Program provides flexible, postpartum support with a focus on core, glute, and overall strength recovery. As a Corrective Exercise Specialist, Doyle emphasizes quality, mindful movements tailored to each woman’s changing body after childbirth.
With an expanding lineup, in-person programs include 6 PM Sweat (Tuesday and Thursday evenings), Express Sweat (Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes), and Sunday Sessions for a morning boost. Hustlin’ at Home provides a ten-week guided program for those preferring a home workout structure, offering ready-to-go routines.
For beginners, Doyle recommends a Corrective Exercise Assessment to build a foundation of safe, effective movement. Soon, she’ll also launch Perimenopause and Menopause Coaching, an educational program to support women through these life stages.
Finally, Accountability Coaching empowers clients who often put themselves last, offering structured workouts, weekly check-ins, and personalized nutritional support. “My mission is simple,” Doyle concludes. “Meet clients where they are, guide them to where they want to go, and support them with honesty, compassion, and transparency to become more confident, committed, and empowered.”

For 30 years owners Chris MacPhee and David Edgett have been helping their fellow Islanders achieve their fitness goals at Atlantic Fitness Centre.
By Brianne Hogan
Unlike some big box gyms, Atlantic Fitness Centre (AFC) is an Island-owned business, which, according to MacPhee, means they’re able to provide unique customer service to Islanders, including their free personal programming. “This involves a customized routine specifically designed to meet the clients needs as well as any follow-up sessions to ensure proper progress and safety standards are being set,” MacPhee says. “Free personal training is a very unique service to offer in today’s fitness market but we feel it’s the very best way to provide top-notch support.”
Over the years MacPhee says they’ve discovered members with a limited athletic background or challenging health issues are the best candidates for personal training. And if you’re feeling a little nervous about working out for the first time or getting back to exercise after a hiatus, MacPhee says not to sweat it. “Our trainers always make members feel comfortable and try to calm any anxiety or nervousness they may feel from taking on this new venture,” he assures. “Many clients have different goals for various reasons so whether overall health or athletic performance is the priority, our trainers consider all the variables at hand to put together a progressive, safe routine.”
In addition to personal training, what helps AFC stand out is their commitment to the latest workout machinery and gear. “We do our best to study up on the newest equipment in the market and from
that we’ve discovered strength training gear doesn’t improve on the same timeline as cardio therefore we restock cardio equipment on a regular basis,” MacPhee says. Updated gear includes pieces like joint-friendly elliptical machines with various new options or self-powered treadmills designed to mimic ergonomic outdoor exercise. He adds that new members tend to feel more comfortable with using treadmills or recumbent bikes as well as selectorized weight training machines when beginning a new program.
For those who simply want to try out the gym on their own, MacPhee says it’s important to remember that when a person is first starting out even the smallest amount of exercise
“Our trainers always make members feel comfortable and try to calm any anxiety or nervousness they may feel from taking on this new venture.”
- Chris MacPhee
is productive “therefore the main rule of thumb is to not do too much. A fitness program of heavy volume combined with cardio and weight training at an early stage can mentally defeat or cause injury to a beginner.” Instead he recommends 10 to 15 minutes of low-level cardiovascular exercise followed by 20-30 minutes of total body light weight training, which he says “would be an efficient preliminary workout.”
MacPhee is passionate about fitness, and believes that exercise is an integral part of our life’s routine, especially as we get older. “Physical fitness becomes even more important as we grow older primarily due to our lack of movement that comes with everyday life. Going for a walk, participating in moderate level sports or doing cardio exercise is important for heart and lung health while weight training helps prevent osteoarthritis and maintains vital lean muscle mass.”
It’s this passion that fuels his and his staff’s love for what they do. “Meeting all kinds of new people on a weekly basis and helping those people achieve their particular goals makes walking in the front door of Atlantic Fitness everyday a motivating joy.”

Erika Killam and Samantha Sambrooke, two Islandersby-choice, have been pivotal figures in Charlottetown’s yoga scene since making PEI their home. Hailing from Darien, Connecticut, and Vancouver, British Columbia, respectively, both women bring years of yoga experience to the Island. After meeting on Sambrooke’s first visit to PEI, the pair quickly became friends and collaborators, teaching and coordinating yoga classes in local studios. In 2013, Sambrooke fulfilled her dream of opening a yoga teacher training school, Maritime Yoga, and invited Killam to join her as a lead instructor.
Maritime Yoga has been offering its popular 200hour Yoga Teacher Training Program for 10 years, with the 12th intake of students

beginning in September 2024. This training attracts individuals from diverse backgrounds—mental health professionals, school teachers, retirees, and those simply looking to deepen their practice. Graduates have gone on to integrate these skills into their professional settings as well as teach classes in studios and community centres across PEI. Sambrooke, also a certified Yoga Therapist, offers specialized sessions, focusing on holistic health that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Sessions include customized Somatic Yoga (SomaYoga) movements, which manage chronic pain and improve mobility as well as breathing, and meditation techniques. These therapeutic sessions are offered one-to-one as well as in a group setting
at the Charlottetown Yoga Space.
Meanwhile, Killam, who along with David Whitty, co-owns Charlottetown Yoga Space, a vibrant studio that offers a variety of yoga styles, from deep-stretching Yin to dynamic flows and meditation classes. Killam’s teaching philosophy focuses on creating a supportive space where students can engage and interact with each other while continuing to evolve their yoga practice.
The studio, which Killam nicknamed “The Treehouse” for its proximity to the sky and “the energy our students and teachers bring to the space, how you and your friends would fill a special place with shared treasures,” fosters a sense of community, with classes designed for all levels. The
Starter Week package allows new students to explore multiple classes.
With Killam's recent opening of a second location, The Space at Blackbush in Tracadie, and Sambrooke expanding her teacher training, the duo continue to offer a peaceful, welcoming environment for Islanders to find strength, balance, and connection one breath at a time.

Logan Doiron launched Beyond Health & Fitness in 2019. It includes in-person training at the Atlantic Fitness Centre, one-to-one at-home training, and online coaching that he customizes to fit any gym.
Growing up, Logan played highly competitive sports, and he noted that his most successful years were when the coach showed respect, discipline, and work ethic. “So, I stay as fit and healthy as possible so my clients can respect my work ethic and give me their best efforts in return.” Doiron insists he is not a trainer: “I am a Health Coach, I will coach you into the most positive, healthiest and fittest years of your life.”
Logan has developed several programs designed for specific goals: Weight Loss,

Muscle Building and Toning, Wedding Prep, Athletic Performance and Longevity. “Whatever your goals are, we work together to achieve them.”
Logan’s number one recommendation for someone starting a new fitness regimen is to reach out to a professional. “The biggest reason I see people fall out of fitness is because they aren’t being shown the proper routines that suit their unique lifestyle.” Doiron explains. “Start slow and focus on progression week after week. You don’t need to go full throttle for hours every day. The best results come from sustainable consistency for periods of time.”
Beyond Fit: Online is an online HiiT (high-intensity interval training) community
that has a daily “follow along” 30–45-minute workouts that require minimal equipment. Online Coaching is 100% customized programs focused on your goals and using the equipment that you have access to. This really helps people who have home gyms or go to commercial gyms, so they can follow a plan to get their best results.
“I am truly passionate about creating a positive environment for others around me and to show people how fitness gives you so much more than just an appearance; it gives you the ability to live the way you always hoped for.”

Globally Aerus has been a leader in creating healthy indoor environments since 1924, a staggering 100 years in business! This year marks the 76th year of doing business on Prince Edward Island. That is staying power, and good service to thousands of Islanders.
Things have changed over that 76 years. These days the average person spends 90% of their time indoors, and close to 100% of that time we don’t know if the air we are taking in to our bodies is helpful or hurtful to our health. Think about this for a minute. Our water and our food sources have been scrutinized and have to meet certain standards in order to be good enough to put in our bodies. We can even track a plant back to its field and learn its complete life story. However, when we are in a building — any building we inhale
By Aerus Charlottetown Photos Bobby-Jo Goudreau
whatever air we are given. No standards, no safety mechanisms, no options to say, “No, the person next to me has the flu, give me different air please." That may be a bit much, but you get the point.
We now are learning that we can use good indoor air quality to improve cognition and productivity, reduce the spread of airborne diseases, protect against outdoor air pollutants such as smoke, and decrease the number of triggers for conditions like asthma and allergies. We can use good indoor air quality to improve our health and limit person-to-person disease transmission: good for us and good for those around us.
During the pandemic we as a society were made aware of the importance of good indoor air quality thanks to
the contagious virus that was rapidly circulating in indoor environments in countries around the world.
With the flagship technology in many Aerus products being ActivePure, the company garnered a great deal of interest and attention because of its proven ability to inactivate pathogens both in the air and on surfaces in occupied indoor spaces. ActivePure technology has been proven in rigorous independent certified laboratory testing and in real world studies to significantly reduce airborne and surface viruses, mold, bacteria, fungi, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
A number of our technology pieces employ HEPA and Beyond HEPA filtration to physically clean indoor air, and when coupled with ActivePure technology
they are a very effective partnership that helps our homes, offices, schools, public buildings, healthcare facilities and more to be health promoting spaces, instead of being places where we get sick.
To help Islanders learn about the indoor air quality (IAQ) in their own homes, businesses, etc., we are currently providing IAQ assessments at no charge.
To arrange for a free assessment for your home or business please contact our Charlottetown office.

“With no minimum stay from fall until spring, guests can come for a weekend or an extended holiday.”
- Sharat Prakash
Asthe days get shorter and temperatures drop, the mind often turns to thoughts of vacations and a break from routine. Fortunately for Islanders, the perfect escape can be found at the Graham Inn, a local retreat that lifts the spirits and eases the chill of the cooler months.
Located in the heart of the Green Gables shore, just east of Cavendish, the inn is available for full-house rentals throughout the fall and winter. “With no minimum stay from fall until spring, guests can come for a weekend or an extended holiday,” says coowner Sharat Prakash.
The inn offers eight bedrooms with en-suite baths and sleeps up to 18 guests, making it a wonderful choice for family vacations, celebrations of milestone birthdays or anniversaries, and getaways with friends.
Guests can indulge in the inn’s many amenities, including the indoor heated saltwater pool, outdoor hot tub, barrel sauna and, if temperatures allow, the barbecue and fire pit.
For those who love to cook, there is a fully equipped kitchen and large dining room that provides ample space for everyone to linger and relax at mealtimes.
Catering and other addons can also be arranged. “Guests can purchase a wide range of additional services to customize their getaway,” says Prakash.
“These include: tasting events with PEI-based sommeliers or mixologists; culinary experiences featuring local foods prepared by guest chefs; or our special ‘meet the host’ evenings where my wife Smita and I blend Asian cuisine with western flavours using farm-fresh PEI ingredients, including seasonally available herbs and vegetables from our kitchen garden.”
The inn’s outdoor multipurpose event venue is also available to rent until December, weather permitting. “We can host up to 45 people here and book custom-curated experiences offering live entertainment along with drinks and dining,” says Prakash.
For those keen on relaxing, yoga classes are available and led by co-owner Smita Prakash, a certified teacher of Sivananda hatha yoga. “We also have a petting zone where guests can enjoy the company of our cuddly rabbits and lovable Newfoundland dogs,” Prakash adds.
Half-day retreats are another way to experience all the Graham Inn has to offer: the pool, sauna, hot tub, gazebo and petting zone plus live music, a barbecue cookout and s’mores at the fire pit. Pre-booking is required for these popular events, held on Sunday afternoons from October 1 until December 31.
“In addition to gatherings of families and friends, we also offer corporate retreat packages,” Prakash says. “They can be customized to include our catering and culinary experiences and use of our multipurpose event zone which is perfect for meetings.”
Guests of the Graham Inn appreciate its proximity to the natural beauty of the North Shore and the many local businesses and attractions that dot the coast.
“The North Shore is such a serene and beautiful place in the fall and winter months,” says Prakash. “We love being the starting point for people to explore this area and look forward to helping them plan a memorable stay.”

& PINE - Timeless, distinct, and designed for the way you live.
Creating a home that feels “complete” is more than just filling it with furniture—it’s about thoughtful decisions and creating a space that resonates with how you live. Here’s our guide to help you pull it all together.
Before anything else, be honest about your lifestyle and needs. It’s tempting to choose aesthetically pleasing pieces, but how practical are they for your day-today life? For example, that beautiful beige sofa might not be the best fit if you have pets or children. Reflect on how you want the space to feel, how you need it to function, and what might be missing. Write these thoughts down. Having a clear vision of your “whys” will keep you focused during the design process and make decision-making smoother.
Many people skip this crucial step, but it’s impossible to determine what will fit comfortably in your space unless you map it out. (this is a good reason to hire a designer) Measure your room and tape off the furniture pieces you’re considering to visualize how they will fit. This will help you see the flow of the space, ensuring proper pathways and balance. It’s a step often overlooked, but it can prevent the all-too-common mistake of buying pieces that don’t quite work.
Even with the right pieces, if your furniture is out of scale with the room or other elements, your space will feel awkward. Scale and proportion are key to creating visual harmony and ensuring functionality. For example, don’t select a coffee table that’s too low or too far from the sofa—it should be easy to reach and at a comfortable height. Paying attention to these details will prevent your room from feeling disjointed.
Avoid the “matchy-matchy” trap. A well-designed room has layers and contrasts, not pieces that all look the same. If you already have a leather sofa, don’t add another— choose an upholstered chair or sofa instead to introduce softness and variation. Mixing textures, colours, and styles adds depth and character to your home, making it feel curated rather than staged.
At Plank & Pine, we design homes that evoke feeling. Each one is an elevated yet uncomplicated reflection of our clients’ lives. We specialize in extensive projects like new construction homes and comprehensive renovations that allow us the opportunity to see your space as a whole and curate elements that work together to enhance every moment.

mortgage market can be overwhelming. With so many options at varying costs and term lengths, it can be difficult to make a decision. There’s also the added stress of wondering whether the choice being made is the right one. It helps immensely to have unbiased advice and that is exactly what mortgage broker Mike May offers.
“I act as a liaison officer or intermediary who helps home buyers find the best mortgage and lender for their financial circumstances,” May says. As part of the Premiere Mortgage Centre team, May works with a wide range of lenders to identify the terms and rates that are best suited to each individual home buyer.
“As an independent broker, I have access to over twenty lenders, thus a variety of options are available to any client,” notes May.
Whether it’s for a new home, renewal or refinancing, May can answer all the questions homeowners and prospective buyers have about mortgages.
For first-time home buyers, it is important to understand all the considerations that go into securing a mortgage, but also the different government programs designed to help people save for that all-important purchase. “I get great satisfaction helping people purchase their first home,” says May. “It is the most important decision in a person’s lifetime and helping with that process is extremely gratifying.”
For those opting for a new build, a different set of questions may arise.
“The important part is to make sure that a client understands what’s involved when building a property. Is it going to be a self-build? Contractor build? Do they require progress draws or can it be done via turnkey? Is the builder part of the Lux Program and Atlantic Home Warranty Program? It’s also critical to understand how the process works with interest rates during construction,” May explains.
Homeowner questions also extend to refinancing an existing mortgage, which people opt to do for a variety of reasons, including consolidating debt, renovations or transitioning a basement into a rental unit to use as an additional source of income.
The process of renewing a mortgage is another area where people frequently request May’s assistance, to ensure the best solution for now and the future.
As with any financial transaction, the paperwork for mortgages is substantial. May makes clear from the beginning what types of documentation are required from the client to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible.
To provide the guidance his clients rely on, May calls upon his nearly 30 years of experience in the financial services industry and a lifetime of living on the Island. “I was born and raised on PEI,” he notes. A graduate of UPEI, he studied both business and public
administration. After a long tenure in the banking sector where he held a variety of management positions, he moved to his current role at Premiere Mortgage Centre.
For May, it’s all about service and connection. “I take great pride in providing sound financial advice to clients and building relationships throughout the process.”
“As an independent broker, I have access to over twenty lenders, thus a variety of options are available to any client.”

Celebrating 35 years as a Realtor®, Melanie Shaw has learned that client connections and professional business relationships are the foundation of success.
"Understanding, compassion, and patience are essential qualities for success in real estate,” Shaw says when asked about some of her biggest takeaways about the real estate business over the years.“It's about educating clients, providing them with the necessary information for informed decisions, and guiding them patiently through the process.” As for those starting out in the real estate business, Shaw has some simple advice to share: “Nothing ever stays the same when it comes to the real estate market. You have to learn how to adapt to all markets: a buyer's market, seller's market and a balanced market.” And adapting is something that Shaw is clearly good at.
Shaw, founder of the Shaw Team at Royal LePage Prince Edward Realty, has been proudly serving PEI residents for the last ten years after establishing a 25-year real estate career in Ontario. Shaw says she’s most proud of the career move she made all those years ago, knowing that starting over fresh in PEI as a Realtor® would have its challenges, including having to adapt to a new marketplace and working hard to establish a new client base.
Her hard work has helped many achieve their own goals. Since 2019, Shaw has continued to expand the Shaw Team, which she says “has enabled us to deliver exceptional service to even more clients across the Island, from tip to tip. Our full service exclusive systems and professional standards for the team have taken your real estate experience to the next level.” While their head office is located in Charlottetown,
Shaw says they plan to open boutique offices starting in two locations in 2025. The boutique offices will be set up in Western PEI, and on the North Shore, with locations to be announced in the near future. Shaw says they will also have a workspace setup in Eastern PEI. “This allows us to be more accessible in rural locations, for clients to meet with us in person,” she explains. “In each of these areas we have a team member living in and working in that community.”
Shaw says she is “super excited” about expanding in 2025 and “being able to offer full-service, high-quality real estate professionalism, with a team that is fully equipped to provide comprehensive service across the entire Island, ensuring that we can effectively meet the needs of clients from one end of PEI to the other.”
When it comes to home ownership in 2025, Shaw says it’s key to remember
that while the real estate market is constantly evolving, the one thing you can count on in 2025 is that her team will be there to provide you with exceptional service, helping you navigate your real estate needs with confidence. “When you choose your Realtor®, it's essential to choose someone who invests time in thorough research and equips you with the information needed to make well-informed decisions, rather than relying on guesswork,” she explains. “Keeping clients informed throughout the process builds trust and ensures our clients know what to expect. We are solutionoriented, with a dedicated and highly experienced team working for our clients to ensure smooth, seamless processes. Our approachable team is committed to managing every detail with efficiency and excellence."

As any homeowner knows, there is nothing like a pop of colour to liven up a space. At House of Excellence, they have added a lot of colour and a whole new space to showcase all they have to offer. After more than 20 years on Lower Malpeque Road, House of Excellence has moved to Royalty Crossing Plaza, next to Boston Pizza. “The new location is more accessible on the main road in town,” notes General Manager Ammie Jeffery. “We are so excited to welcome our customers here.”
The new store features a 24-ft colour display for the more than 3,500 Benjamin Moore colour choices they carry, ensuring that customers can get a feel for the full range of hues available to them and the various lines of paint that Benjamin Moore produces.
“Benjamin Moore is an industry leader in creating paints that are low in odour and VOCs,” states Jeffery. But these paints do not compromise on vibrancy or durability, Jeffery explains: “The Gennex waterborne colourants used in our paints are proprietary to Benjamin Moore. They are environmentally friendly and resist fading for very long life.”
And these products are not just for homeowners.
“Specializing in high-quality coatings, Benjamin Moore has numerous lines to offer one and all projects, from homeowner to large-scale commercial coatings,” says Jeffery. These include interior and exterior paints, along with primers, enamels, epoxies, urethanes and other specialty coatings and products.
Amongst all that is new and noteworthy, customers will still experience what they’ve always known from House of Excellence–exceptional customer service.
From its beginnings in the 1970s as Northumberland Paints, to its Charlottetown and Summerside locations today, great customer service has always been a point of pride for everyone
at House of Excellence.
“We’ve been doing this a long time,” notes Jeffery. “Our team has a combined 150 years of experience between us.” Their expertise extends to other product ranges, like Hunter-Douglas blinds, shutters and window shades. “Customers also trust us with custom colour and stain matching,” says Jeffery.
As for that pop of colour that many homeowners look for, Benjamin Moore recently announced a possible option–Cinnamon Slate, its 2025 Colour of the Year. A mix of heathered plum and velvety brown, Cinnamon Slate reflects current home décor trends of warm and calming earth tones. It is complemented by soft greens, browns and grey shades in the company’s 2025 colour palette.
“The colours in the 2025 palette work beautifully together across rooms but also stand alone to add a subtle hint of colour,” states Jeffery. The shades in the palette are ideal for everything from accent walls to cupboards, kitchen islands, ceilings, doors, trim, stairs and, of course, any room in the home.
“We always encourage lots of exploration of our colour wall. No matter what a customer chooses–whether from the 2025 palette or something completely different–our team can show them how to incorporate a range of complementary colours in their space,” says Jeffery.

With the holiday season just around the corner many of us will be hosting family or friends. Creating a welcoming and comfortable guest room is a thoughtful way to make visitors feel at home. A well-designed space doesn’t need to be elaborate, but it should provide comfort, functionality, and a few personal touches to ensure your guests enjoy their stay.
The bed is the focal point of any guest room, so it’s important to invest in a comfortable mattress and fresh, clean bedding. Provide extra pillows and blankets to accommodate different preferences. Crisp sheets and a cozy duvet will give the room a hotel-like feel. If space allows, consider adding a nightstand with a reading lamp for convenience.
Your guests will appreciate having a space to unpack and store their belongings. A small dresser, a luggage rack, or even a few hangers in the closet can make a big difference. Ensure there’s enough room for them to move around easily, even if the room is small.
Stock the room with essentials such as fresh towels, a mirror, and a few basic toiletries like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste. A basket of these items can be a nice touch. A water carafe or bottled water on the bedside table can also add to their comfort. Leave a few magazines or books you know they would enjoy in a basket or on the bedside table.
Add some personality and warmth to the space by incorporating soft lighting,
artwork, or a few decorative pillows. Neutral colours work well to create a calm, relaxing environment. A small rug can make the room feel cozier and more inviting.
In today’s world, offering Wi-Fi access is a necessity. Leave a note with the password on the nightstand. A TV is a nice extra; your guest might enjoy watching their favourite series before sleeping. You can also include a phone charger or a universal charging station for added convenience.
Provide something special for a late night snack or breakfast in bed. They may rise earlier than your family; let them know where everything is so they will feel at home.
Fresh flowers and a scented candle are a thoughtful touch.

The homeowners were starting fresh when they moved to the Island in 2023. The decision was driven by a desire to be closer to their tight-knit circle of friends.
The kitchen layout had a great flow, with a living area directly off the kitchen. Storage was a priority with custom cabinetry, drawers, and a recessed pantry to maximize space and the addition of a powerful range hood that would allow them to sear in a cast iron pan without setting off smoke alarms!
The home was a spacious 3,600 square feet with great bones and some interesting architectural features. The stunning curved staircase needed some serious updates and many of the rooms had awkward layouts, so the renovation required a complete gut.
The priority was to understand exactly how the family needed their home to function. They were drawn to both traditional and contemporary design elements, appreciating the dimension of a classic shaker-style cabinet but also gravitating toward clean, simple lines.
Each decision helped transform this house into a home that truly reflects the family’s vision—a seamless blend of style and function.
Bringing this home to life was an amazing journey. Every space was designed with purpose, where each piece of furniture feels natural and lived-in, never overly styled. It’s a home that effortlessly blends beauty and function, offering a place that’s as inviting as it is practical for everyday living.
While the homeowners loved the idea of bright, white spaces, they didn’t want their home to feel sterile. We opted for a palette with warm whites, soft greys, a mix of light and dark wood tones, and a dramatic, almost-black, blue—Witching Hour by Benjamin Moore—to add depth and interest.
► We upgraded the stunning curved staircase with contemporary black steel balusters and a simple, elegant newel design, bringing a fresh but timeless look to this focal point.
▲One of the first big decisions to be made was whether to refinish or replace the original hardwood floors. We opted to refinish them, working with a local expert who gave the floors a light, natural oak finish.
►The formal living room presented its own challenges—it was a long space. To break it up, we created three distinct zones: a formal dining area, a cozy conversation zone centred around a stone fireplace flanked by bookshelves, and a media area with a floating cabinet for gaming equipment and a super-comfy reclining sofa, perfect for movie nights. We added vertical shiplap behind the TV in that same deep blue to make the wall more interesting and to help the TV blend into the space.

Stacy McKenna
Maud Home is a name that evokes a famous Islander but also reflects the philosophy of owner Stacy McKenna. “I’m a big fan of timeless design and believe in investing in key pieces that work with passing trends,” she notes. “What’s more timeless than Lucy Maud Montgomery’s work?”
The Summerside store’s extensive offerings show how McKenna has put this belief into practice. Customers will find a curated collection of vintage and new items–from furnishings and textiles to housewares, mirrors, lighting, wallpaper, paint and more–along with all of the advice and guidance needed to create a space that reflects their unique values through pieces rich with stories.
To facilitate design discussions with clients, McKenna recently opened a design centre alongside her shop. “I wanted to provide a comfortable space to view our textile, wallpaper and lighting libraries. We are also pleased to offer Farrow & Ball paints,” she notes. “We are one of only two stockists in Atlantic Canada and the only one east of Québec that can do in-can tinting, making the full range of Farrow & Ball colours available in minutes.”
McKenna brings to her store a literal lifetime of experience in the design business. From her days getting off the school bus to join her mom at McKenna’s Furniture in O’Leary to her time running the store in Summerside with her siblings, she learned firsthand how to work with clients and assist them with their design plans and decisions. She later moved on to Mydoma Studio, a business management software for interior designers. “My role of COO provided me with an amazing exposure to the interior design industry on a more global level,” she notes.
In Maud Home, McKenna applied her considerable experience to create
a unique offering in the home décor space: a design-led furniture and décor shop where pieces are chosen for their quality, sustainability and ability to inspire.
“Quality furniture is inherently sustainable,” she explains. “But buying furniture has become increasingly confusing as price alone is no longer a good indicator of quality. I rely on the experience I’ve gained over the years to look for the components and construction features that make a piece long-lasting.”
“I also believe that quality does not need to come at the sacrifice of aesthetics so I choose pieces that are as beautiful as they are long-lasting,” she states.
McKenna partners with artisans and vendors who share her commitment to well-made goods. While she always looks locally, her search extends across North America and to Europe where she sources unique, well-made home décor items that are often hard to find elsewhere on the Island.
Beyond the physical items she stocks in her store, McKenna also hopes Maud Home will inspire people to think differently about how they shop for key pieces for their home. “You don’t need to rush into filling the space completely at once,” she says. “Collecting over time and being thoughtful about the space will create a more inviting and interesting space. We are here and happy to help you with your selections.”
Home for the holidays. A gift for the home always fits. A cozy alpaca throw paired with a comfy pillow - perfect for cuddling on the couch. Coffee table books, or a scentsational candle that makes every space feel like home and will fit perfectly on the Dunn side table. Artwork is an especially personal gift that can be enjoyed all year. The French mattress is a great addition to your home- use it anywhere. And finally, the Kempsey chair with the cane inserts is simply elegant in a plush green velvet, paired with a stunning floor lamp to elevate your style.

SWENN has found a new home in downtown Charlottetown at 204 Queen Street, right across fromcity hall. The location boasts large windows that flood the store with natural light, creating a bright and welcoming space. “The windows and natural light are my favourite part of the new store,” says owner Kristell Geffroy. “They allow me to showcase the latest styles as they arrive.”

With a special focus on quilted fabrics— known for their vintage appeal, comfort, and texture—SWENN brings these unique, eye-catching materials to life affordably, while reinforcing the brand’s
commitment to sustainability. Looking ahead, Geffroy is also working on new SWENN garments for the winter season and upcoming spring. Treat Yourself at Foxy Fox Coffee House & Boutique

Sometimes you just have to try something new, even though it might be intimidating. For Meghan Bradley, that meant shifting from a high-intensity career in corporate sales to small business ownership.
When she first thought of opening her own business, she envisioned a coffee shop or boutique but soon realized she could have both under the same roof. It was an idea that made total sense: “When we shop, we usually stop for a coffee or treat, and we often shop with friends. I wanted to make it more of an experience,” says Bradley. “For those that don’t like shopping as much, they can sit and enjoy a delicious coffee while others shop the boutique. We have a beautiful south-facing deck to sit out and enjoy some sunshine.”
As to why she chose Crapaud for her first Foxy Fox location, Bradley says, “Why not Crapaud? It is a community full of multiple generations and growing young families. Our rural communities need businesses like this to keep them going and to create a
place to meet and keep that sense of community alive.” To that end, she will operate her business year-round. “I have no intention of being a seasonal business,” she notes.
Bradley found the perfect location for her business in a 130-year-old barn that she “took down to the bones” and built back up using the wood she could salvage from the renovation and spruce from a local mill.
Her rural location also inspired the name of her boutique. When she moved to the area, she couldn’t help but notice the many beautiful foxes in and around her new home. “I started saying, ‘oh there’s another foxy fox’. I then thought it might be a catchy name.”
Along with coffee, Foxy Fox offers delicious treats from Fat Cat Bakery and At Your Service Creations of Charlottetown, with their salted caramel crisps, oat bars and New York rolls being especially popular. Bradley recently expanded the menu to include grab & go breakfast sandwiches and paninis.
On the boutique side, Bradley offers both clothing and a selection of home décor items. “I aim to bring in quality sustainable clothing in smaller quantities not found elsewhere on the Island,” she says.
“My gift and housewares section features some Canadian brands from
independent artists, as well as some globally recognized brands,” Bradley notes. Shoppers will find items like coffee cups and wine glasses, candles, greeting cards and, at Christmas, holiday ornaments and décor. “The shop is always changing as I discover new unique items,” she says.
Having recently celebrated the first anniversary of her business, Bradley is looking to the future. She expanded to the Blackbush resort at Old Tracadie Harbour in the summer, and opened Foxy Fox at Royalty Crossing as a coffee bar. Back in Crapaud, she is seeking a liquor license to complement her menu and planning events with local talent.
Foxy Fox is open seven days a week. Check the website for boutique hours.

From its very beginnings, Confederation Court Mall has been a unique shopping destination. Built in the late 1970s, the mall was developed not solely through new construction, but by expanding and refurbishing existing buildings then connecting them to a new interior. Its original facade stayed intact, maintaining a link to the downtown community and its history.
Since the mall’s opening, that emphasis on connection and community has remained. The mall is now home to many locally owned shops that offer a one-of-a-kind retail experience.
“We are very proud that Confederation Court Mall hosts unique boutique stores, most of which are independently owned,” says the mall’s General Manager, Keri Charlton-Dumais. “By shopping here, you are directly supporting and connecting with members of your community. These are our neighbours and friends.”
Beyond that direct support, there are other benefits to shopping locally. Independent store owners get to know their customers on a personal level. They have an in-depth understanding of what people in their community are looking for and will not hesitate to bring in products they know their customers will enjoy.
Because they are so invested in their shops and the wider community, these small business owners offer a level of service that is second to none. “Our merchants know their business like the back of their hands. They are experts in their business and experts in customer service, and it’s an experience you really only get shopping local,” says CharltonDumais.

The mall’s vendors sell everything from apparel and shoes to jewellery, accessories, and home décor and kitchen wares. There are also lots of options for truly unique gifts and cards, plus some delicious culinary offerings.
Visitors from out of town can enjoy a vacation by staying at The Holman Grand Hotel which is connected directly to the mall and home to the very popular Redwater Rustic Grille. “This is the only place in downtown Charlottetown where visitors can shop, dine and stay under one roof,” notes CharltonDumais.
Confederation Court Mall is a wonderful destination year-round but is especially magical during the holidays. Shopping in-person in this distinctive locale nostalgically recalls holidays past and the excitement of venturing downtown to find the perfect gift.
Special holiday events this year include workshops, musicians, choral performances and, of
course, a visit from St. Nick. “We’re very excited to have lots of great programming this holiday season,” says Charlton-Dumais. “For our full event schedule, people can visit our website and social media or check out our free Holiday Gift Guide, available in mall shops, online, and in select editions of PEI Living.”
The guide is a mustread, filled with gift ideas from the proprietors of the mall’s many shops. “Our merchants have showcased their top holiday recommendations, ranging from cozy slippers and comfy loungewear to beautiful keepsake jewellery, watches, and the perfect baskets for holiday gift giving,” Charlton-Dumais states. “Whether it’s for special occasions, an outfit for work or a night out, ingredients for a new recipe, or even an engagement ring, shopping local matters!”

PERSONALIZED GIFTS & UNIQUE HOME DÉCOR

Juan Chan was originally a Sake Sommelier who arrived on PEI from Hong Kong in the summer of 2023, bringing with him a deep appreciation for the artistry of glassware.
“One of the key responsibilities as a Sake Sommelier is pairing sake with the right food and vessel, with glass being one of the most suitable materials for enhancing the drinking experience,” he shares. “This appreciation for glass eventually inspired the opening of my shop, Glass On, where beauty and functionality converge.”
Once you step into the Charlottetown shop, you’ll be met with a variety of delicate glass items, from elegant wine glasses to intricate glass pendants, that will surely elevate your home and leave a lasting impression on any occasion. According to Chan, one of the standout products is the glass globe, crafted with 3D laser technology to engrave intricate patterns inside the glass. Customers can choose from a variety of designs, including horoscopes and different animals, making the globes perfect for personalized gifts or unique home décor.
Additionally, says Chan, the boutique’s stained glass pieces, designed locally, are another popular item of choice, that adds vibrant artistry to any space. To ensure the best value for customers, many of the products are imported from Asia, which Chan says offers high-quality craftsmanship at competitive prices.
However, local artists are encouraged to take part in Glass On’s consignment program which allows them to showcase their unique pieces, creating a dynamic fusion of creativity and collaboration with Islanders.

Around 68% of households have a pet and researchers are uncovering the potential physical and mental health benefits of various animals, from fish and guinea pigs to dogs and cats. When it comes time to add a companion animal to your household, consider adopting!
Few things bring as much joy as coming home to a loyal companion. The unconditional love of a pet offers more than just companionship—it can also reduce stress, improve heart health, and support children’s emotional and social development.
Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood.
When adding a pet to your family, adopting from your local rescue is highly recommended.
The PEI Humane Society first opened in July 1974 as a small, volunteer-run operation. Since then, it has grown significantly, thanks in part to a network of dedicated foster volunteers who help care for animals in need.
“While the shelter’s in-house capacity fluctuates based on the type of animals and the season, the foster program greatly expands its reach,” Ashley Travis, Development and
Communications Coordinator says. “Foster families take in animals such as kittens, puppies, and those requiring medical care or socialization until they are ready for adoption, freeing up space at the shelter itself.”
The shelter accepts all companion animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, fish, reptiles, and more, however, livestock and wildlife fall under provincial jurisdiction.
Animals enter the shelter through a variety of channels: owner surrenders, lost/stray programs, animal protection, or affiliated programs like Safe Haven. The intake process for surrendered animals includes a thorough examination and gathering of medical and behavioural information to prepare them for adoption.
Each year, the PEI Humane Society cares for over 1,600 animals, with about a third arriving due to housingrelated issues. “Safe Haven is our emergency animal housing program, offering temporary shelter for pets whose owners are facing a crisis. Individuals experiencing homelessness, personal challenges, or requiring medical care can apply for the program, which provides free interim housing for their animals. It’s important to note that Safe Haven is not a boarding service,” Travis says. “Last year, we cared for over 100 animals through this program, enabling more than 100 Islanders to access supportive housing or receive necessary medical treatment while we looked after their pets.”
Adoption fees range from $185 for cats to $450 for puppies, with senior animals available for free to senior citizens through the Senior4Senior program. The fee includes spay/ neuter services and microchipping, which helps reunite lost pets with their families.
“Potential adopters are encouraged to carefully consider their lifestyle before bringing a pet into their home.” Travis says, “It’s important to research breeds and understand their specific needs to ensure a happy, healthy fit.”
A new shelter, expected to open in Spring/Summer 2025, will increase capacity with additional kennel rooms. The foster program will continue to grow alongside the new facility. Fundraising for the $6.4 million project is ongoing, and donations can be made in-person or online at www. peihumanesociety.com/donate.

PEIL: Share a bit about your background.
4-H played a big role in my youth giving me numerous opportunities to learn skills, travel, and meet people who celebrated rural living. My first four years of schooling were in a oneroom school housing grades one to eight. In grade one I was lucky enough to sit behind a grade eight student who would do my work while I read. I then attended Miscouche Elementary and Miscouche High school, before taking a political science degree at the University of Prince Edward Island. My first job after university was as a news reporter with CJRW radio station. My one big regret in the job was that I didn’t accept the offer to go up with the Snowbirds when they performed in Summerside, however, I did fly on the last flight of the Argus along with other media members. For the past twentyone years I have been employed as a cultural programmer with Culture Summerside, the arts, heritage, and culture department of the western capital. No two days are ever the same, which is a real privilege.
PEIL: Who inspired you to become a writer?
I suppose it was my maternal grandfather and mother who inspired me to write. My grandfather was a storyteller with a great love of history. My mother indulged me as a small child by following my orders to stop her housework and sit and write down the stories I dictated to her. My high school english teacher, Shirley Barlow appreciated my stories, which was encouraging. But for many years my only writing was in the workplace or contract writing. Life as a single parent was busy and didn’t permit the time, or so I thought, for writing that might go nowhere.
PEIL: When did you write your first book?
My first published book was Vintage Christmas: Holiday Stories from Rural Prince Edward Island published by Nimbus in 2016. My second book was Memories of Christmas published in 2022 by Acorn Press. Both are a series of short stories. Name Your Game is my first novel.
PEIL: What is Name Your Game about?
Name Your Game is a drama about family and community and the ties that bind them.
PEIL: Why did you decide to write this story?
In 2010, I had the good fortune to be accepted for the PEI Screenwriter Bootcamp, which proved to be one of the best weeks of my life. My first idea for a screenplay was rejected and I had hours to write a new proposal before the camp started. I was rather frantic for an idea and then the universe delivered. The Name Your Game plot came to me, and there was no looking back. I wrote the screenplay and pitched it, but funding was an issue so it sat gathering dust until the winter of 2022 when I decided perhaps the
way to get the story out into the world would be as a novel. I am so grateful that Acorn Press decided to go with the book.
PEIL: Who is Daniel MacDougall?
Daniel MacDougall is a young man with big dreams and big responsibilities in the winter of 1956. He is doing his best to achieve his own goals, stay true to himself, while answering to a number of other people. The lesson he is forced to learn is that no one walks alone, and it takes great strength to ask for help, and feel worthy of receiving it.
PEIL: Did you learn anything about MacDougall that surprised you?
Daniel surprised me in that he became a much more complex character on the page than I had first planned. He insisted on that and might have done a little of the writing himself.
PEIL: Do you write full time?
With my job I write everyday, which can make it hard to come home and create something for myself. I can go long periods without working on a story, but I am trying to become more disciplined in scheduling time. Also working on ridding myself of guilt about taking time to have fun writing when perhaps I should be doing some real work, whatever that might be.
PEIL: Do you have any books launching in 2025?
I have no new work coming out in 2025; however, I currently have a new novel in progress. No deadlines in sight, and then the question will be, will a publisher want to print it?
PEIL: Anything you would like to add?
The only thing I would add is that I believe although Name Your Game is set in 1956, it clearly speaks to today and the challenges people are facing in fulfilling their dreams.

(by Richard Pellissier-Lush, art by Jessica Jerome)
As a Mi’kmaq child, Richard Pellissier-Lush grew looking different than other Indigenous children. He didn’t feel he fit in with the nonIndigenous or the Indigenous children he knew. But his mother continually reminding him that he was part of the Creator’s plan empowered him to embrace his culture no matter what he looked like.
(by Hope Dalvay) Jane’s life is about to change, big-time…and she’s okay with that. Twelve-year-old Jane Smith isn’t surprised when her parents announce they’re relocating. This is nothing new. That all changes when Jane becomes pen pals with Random Radcliff.

Turk (by Fred MacDonald with Glenna Jenkins ) The New York Rangers headed into the 2021-22 regular NHL season with a head coach determined to make the Blueshirts a Stanley Cup contender. With his nine years of head coaching in the NHL, Turk was hired to lead the young Rangers team to new heights throughout the 2021-22 season. And that he did. Under Turk’s leadership, the Rangers went from young underdogs to the Stanley Cup playoffs!
(by Stella Shepard) Thrust into the foster care system from an early age, Apple moves from house to house on Prince Edward Island without finding a home until she’s a teenager and is taken in by a couple who never managed to have children themselves. When she falls pregnant, her foster parents are keen to raise the baby with Apple still in the house—to live as a family. That opportunity is torn from Apple by members of the Catholic Church along with social workers and government officials. The shameful legacy of forced and coerced adoption in Eastern Canada is brought to life in this sweeping sequel to Ashes of My Dreams.
