The PEI Provincial Home Show is the show homeowners trust whether they are building, buying, renovating or landscaping their home.

▲ The original company vehicles in 2000 and one of the current company vehicles The year holds special meaning for Maria Smith and Keir Smith, as 2020 marks the twentieth anniversary of their business, Keir’s Overhead Doors.

Prompted by Keir’s interest in overhead doors and the opportunity to create a market for them on PEI, the couple opened the business in May 2000. They used their living room as the office, and Keir’s half-tonne truck to go and install doors.

It wasn’t an easy feat. “We raised four children in between phone calls, lots of homework at the kitchen table, and door installations,” says Maria.

Both Maria and Keir grew up on the Island, which is why Maria says she and Keir love having a business in PEI. Their family roots gave them not only a firm foundation, but “everybody here knows everybody, and word of mouth can be a very positive thing.”

In those early days, it certainly was, and Maria shares that they built their clientele by word of mouth while doing mostly residential door installations and services. However, as time went on, eventually their impeccable

service spoke for itself. They soon started providing barn doors for farmers, as well as commercial doors for various businesses. “We established a wonderful and lasting rapport with some great people,” says Keir. “We still have many customers from back when we started, and without them we would not have lasted 20 years.”

Some things have changed over the years.

While they still offer various overhead doors and electronic door openers, doors now come in a variety of styles and colours rather than the simple option of plain white. Keir’s is the exclusive PEI dealer for Garex doors.

The couple also opened Keir’s Ventilation Systems in the fall of 2006, and “hasn’t looked back since,” says Keir. “Every year has been busier than the one before.” So busy, in fact, that now they have a dedicated team of 14 people working for the business. “Our techs are very clean, efficient, and fast.”

Additionally, the company is PEI’s exclusive dealer for Venmar, a ventilation system that will move stale air out of your house and usher in fresh, clean air. Keir’s will install a new Venmar ventilation system outright, or can replace your old one. Being part of the Network of Excellence also means that they are able to help those who qualify for rebates through efficiencyPEI. “It’s great to hear feedback from the customers who didn’t have a ventilation system before hiring us. It makes us happy to hear what a difference it has made,” says Keir.

As for the secret to the company’s success as a start-up business, Maria says she often compares a new business to having a new baby. “You raise it, and you have your ups and downs along the way, but you end up being proud of what you have created.”

Keir remains hands-on, and often travels across the Island to measure and price new doors, as well as talk with customers. The business also services a wide array of doors, ranging from agricultural to commercial to business.

DECORATING with BOOKS

I

grew up with books. My mother was a teacher and she encouraged me to read every day.

By elementary school I was a voracious reader with a collection of favourite books that filled every corner of my room.

I still surround myself with books, my most coveted are hardcovers. Hardcover books and coffee table books have been incorporated into the best designed spaces for many years, but recently decorating with books has become popular for its aesthetic appeal.

Using books as design elements is pretty easy, the following are some simple ideas and tips: Colour block Organize your books according to the colour of the cover, specifically the spine. If you’re filling a bookcase consider starting with the boldest colours and build a gradient.

You can also organize each shelf with a different colour.

Stacked Hardcover books look great in stacks on coffee tables, book shelves or anywhere you need a pop of colour. Choose titles that go together like a stack of biographies, home decor or fashion or your favourite author.

Cover up

Kid’s Books

If you’re looking for a completely uniform design or favour one particular colour, consider covering your books with decorative or kraft paper. This will also protect your books from sticky fingers or spills, it’s also really simple to change the paper.

Using books as decor in children’s rooms offer many advantages. Books encourage a love of reading at an early age and the cover artwork inspires imagination and play. Every child’s room should include as many books as possible. Consider trading books with other parents as your child either outgrows or is eager for new books.

Collect A collection of books tell a story, whether it’s cookbooks from your favourite chef, the entire library of Nancy Drew from your childhood or photography and travel books that inspire you everyday, book collections are personal.

Under the Jacket Consider removing the dust jacket from your hardcover book, the cover design is often simple and elegant. Many have embossed titles and linen-like covers that look beautiful on their own.

Multi purpose Large stacks of books make perfect and interesting side tables. Check out your local thrift store for old encyclopedias and stack them to the desired height. To secure them, you can drill a hole through the stack (skip the outside cover of the top book) and insert a metal rod or dowel.

REDUCE DUPLICATE ITEMS One simple way to reduce clutter is to pair-down the quantity of items in your house. Take note of how many dishtowels, drinking glasses, etc. you ACTUALLY use, and donate the excess. You may also find that doing this will not only reduce clutter on your shelves – but also create less in your dirty dish pile and laundry collection as well!

BINS, BINS, BINS! Who doesn’t love a nice new bin to make a shelf look clean and organized? Using bins is an excellent way to separate and keep track of small items.

Gone are the days of “the junk drawer” – bins are here to stay.

These tools are not only stylish, but also solve a very common household problem by masking your unsightly items in a clean and crisp fashion. Just be sure not to take advantage and use them to hoard things that may be better suited for the trash.

TOSS WHEN YOU BUY A good rule of thumb for keeping your space clutter-free is to throw an item away each time you purchase a new one. I use

this rule with my clothing: I allow myself a set amount of space for each clothing category. When my hangers are full and I acquire a new item, it means it’s time to clean some things out.

STREAMLINE DEBT De-clutter your finances and get rid of debt where possible. For example, if you make one, just one, extra house payment a year, you can cut a 30-year mortgage in half. And consolidating your debt where possible not only de-clutters your bookwork, but also frees your mind, giving you more time to think about the things you enjoy – like your clean, clutter-free home!

After a 30-year-long career, Kris Fournier knows more than a thing or two about construction. He started at age 18 as a laborer on commercial job sites before branching out into his own company in his mid-twenties. Fournier’s experience in the industry includes everything from flipping houses to rental properties to the flooring trade, which is what he’s best known for.

Although Fournier made the switch to real estate four years ago, carving out a successful career as a RE/MAX realtor, he didn’t leave his passion for construction behind him. In fact, with his business, he’s able to blend his two passions— construction and real estate—together.

Fournier’s background in construction helps his business as a realtor in a variety of ways, including everything from problemsolving to home inspections, knowing the value of repairs, and the whole building process. “I am able to call upon my vast network of industry contacts, and help people with many issues. I can find you the right person to complete any job,” he says, adding that knowing the trades and the people who work in them “[is] invaluable when advising clients of where to go and who to go to. It’s the knowledge of the purchase process.”

Fournier, along with his team—which includes his daughter, Catherine, who’s also a realtor, and their full-time assistant Shannon—work on various residential and commercial projects for their clients. “When working with me, you get the power of a team. We walk our clients through the entire process of buying or selling a property,” says Fournier. “No question is ever too big or too small. We offer our clients our knowledge of the real estate market, combined with honesty and integrity. We pride ourselves on staying up-to-date on technology and industry standards, negotiation, and communication skills.”

One of Fournier’s personal favourite highlights from his work was the completion of a luxurious penthouse condo on Richmond Street. “It was enjoyable to work with the finest finishings, modern technology, and great partners,” he says.

He must be doing something right. Currently, Fournier is working as the selling realtor on a large-scale project called Montgomery Heights community, the largest subdivision in Charlottetown, with more than 100 single homes, 120 duplexes, and 140 townhouses to be built.

Fournier says what he offers uniquely to clients is simple: he works hard for them. “I try to always go above and beyond to help them with whatever they need to get the deal done. It doesn’t matter the square footage; I treat every client and deal with the same level of service. It may not be my biggest deal, but it might be the biggest one of their lives.” His attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed. He says, “I always answer my calls, which they appreciate, and word of mouth goes a long way in this business.”

Whether receiving the keys for your new build or a new-to-you home; the last thing a buyer often focuses on is what’s on the outside of the structure. But in fact, the outside landscape is just as important as the interior details, and can make all the difference when it comes to ensuring a homeowners happiness.

NEW BUY Take stock of what you’ve got So where do you start? Begin by surveying the scene: that is, taking stock of what you have to work with. Spending some time with the previous owner to do a walk-through of the yard will make things much easier when attempting to identify plants and shrubs later- and make weeding and spring cleanup a whole lot easier. If buying in the winter, take note of any trees or bushes, and ask about existing flowerbeds or garden plots that may be buried in the snow to get an overall feel for the space.

Wait until late summer to make any big plans Many flowerbeds are planted using a combination of both annuals (plants that grow for only one year), and perennials (plants that come up year after year), and many of these perennials aren’t fully established until mid-summer.

With this in mind, hold off on any major landscaping endeavours until most of

your plants are in full bloom. This will give you the opportunity to see the height variations and colour palettes you have to work with.

with existing topsoil, consider having it tested for PH and nutrient levels and amend accordingly. This will ensure a solid base for future grass and other landscape elements.

Rehoming over throwing away If you’ve decided to remove a flowerbed, or even just a few plants or bushes in your new yard, don’t throw them in the compost right away. Leave the roots encapsulated in a hearty mound of soil, and set your cast-offs to the side for now. Perennials and bushes can be expensive, and you may find it’s not that you don’t like the plant, but more so the location. By salvaging these plants, you can save money and hassle by planting them in another area of your yard. And if they’re simply not for youyou can always give them to a friend or neighbour - or even sell them online.

NEW BUILD

When starting out, establish grass and small flowerbeds your first year, and hold off on larger features like trees and bushes until you are accustom to the space. Spending time both familiarizing yourself with the view from each window, and noting the sun’s path throughout the seasons - both key factors in placing future trees and shrubs - will help you decide whether to keep a portion of the yard empty for activities, or potential future focal pieces such as a pond, pool, or gazebo.

So whether you’re starting from scratch, or modifying an existing property, remember to take your time and follow your heart. Your home should be a reflection of you – both inside and out.

GROWING TRENDS

Growing Trees in Containers Words by Jacqui Chaisson Growing trees in containers is an easy way to add a variety of color, texture, and size to your outdoor garden, your home or patio space, as well as an effective solution for small-space gardens that don’t have the room for full-sized trees. Plus, trees grown in pots can live in climates that would otherwise be too cold for them, so even gardeners living in cold climates can grow trees like fig and olive that are native to warmer climates. The Fiddle Leaf Fig was on everyone’s must-have plant list throughout 2019 and this year you’ll see that trend continue with the addition of other trees in containers. Olive trees are one of the top plants for 2020, but fruit trees such as lemon, orange and lime are growing in popularity.

So, what do you need to do to be a part of this growing trend?

Pick a container that has good drainage holes and consider choosing something made of a breathable material like wood or clay to promote drainage.

Your container should be no bigger than twice the volume of the tree’s roots.

Transplant trees from their nursery pots after the final frost of the season. Line the bottom of the new pot with a layer of foam peanuts to promote good drainage without adding extra weight. Plant the tree at the same depth it has been growing in its nursery pot, using a good, nutrient-rich soil mix.

Follow individual instructions for watering and light requirements as stated on the plant tag.

You can move your tree to your patio or deck for the summer months, but be sure to place it in a position for the correct amount of sunlight.

Move your potted tree indoors for the colder months and fertilize or re-pot as required.

Getting started

Home Hardware offers an eight foot by 12 foot storage shed that comes with two windows, a double barn door and single door.

Before you break ground or purchase a shed, check the local building codes to see if there are any restrictions and what permits, if any, are required.

Building from the ground up is a great option if you have something in particular in mind.

You can hire someone or do it yourself if you’re handy.

If you don’t have a building to convert and don’t want to build

If you’re looking for something a little bigger, Spruce Grove Lumber in Cardigan has a 12 foot by 16 foot shed which includes two windows and a front door.

nergy efficiency is one method to reduce human greenhouse gas emissions. There are many factors in home efficiency, from the cost of the energy utilized to the renewability of the energy’s source.

Winter tends to be the time when we assess our homes for needed improvements, especially regarding efficiency. High bills are top of mind, with the cost of winter heating and electricity at the forefront.

So, why don’t we start with the most obvious: heat.

There are many options and innovations in home heating beyond the traditional oilfired furnace. Wood often gets overlooked when home-heating sources are discussed, yet it’s actually an excellent option. Wood is relatively inexpensive, is a completely renewable resource, and leaves almost no carbon footprint. From woodstoves to wood-fired boilers, there are many options to choose from, and wood gives off a very dry heat—perfect for our cold, damp winters here on the Island.

Another heat source many Islanders turn to is heat pumps. There are three main types of heat pump: mini-splits, geothermal, and air-sourced. Depending on the type, heat pumps can provide up to three times the heat of a traditional electric baseboard using the same energy consumption. That translates into big savings on your monthly bills.

In-floor heating can also be a great option in our climate, especially with the new hydronic systems now available. Unlike traditional radiant in-floor heat, hydronic heating uses PEX tubes containing hot water to heat your floor, instead of electrical wiring. This can work with a standard water heater, making the switch
