Preface d.

Master Synthesis and Transformation aims to provide students with intensive practice in combining sentences using appropriate sentence connectors with the understanding that the goal of sentence combining is not to produce long superfluous sentences but rather to develop the skill to write comprehensive, effective and diverse sentences to integrate related information and ideas.

(Have you conveyed the idea intended by the original author?) (Is the sentence clear? Can it be understood at • Clarity the first reading?) (Do the various parts of the sentence fit together • Coherence logically, orderly and semantically?) (Are key words and phrases placed in emphatic • Emphasis positions?) • Conciseness (Does the sentence clearly express an idea without wasting words?) (Does the sentence flow, or is it marked by awkward • Rhythm or abrupt interruptions?)

The carefully crafted exercises will help students become versatile writers who are adept at using different methods to arrange words together to achieve the most compact sentence. They will learn about sentence evaluation which is based on six closely related writing components:

Pe

la

The six workbooks in the series contain multiple sentence-combining activities which first help students identify short, choppy sentences in their own writing, and thereafter, guide them in combining and rearranging their ideas to produce a multi-dimensional piece of writing. As they get more practice in generating more complex sentences from shorter ones, they will discover that when a single word is removed from a sentence, or if its position is changed in that sentence, the whole meaning of that sentence and its impact on readers will be entirely changed. Master Synthesis and Transformation is the way forward to helping students become effective writers!
