DIAMOND V RANCH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2024 // 12:30 PM AT THE RANCH // WIBAUX, MT Selling 155 Simmental, SimAngus & Angus Bulls

Welcome to our 48th Annual Bull Sale! Another year has passed and on February 7, 2 young men’s dream of selling bulls, will produce our 48th annual bull sale. It was 1974 when my brother Bob and myself Bill decided to embark on a new adventure, we began AI’ing cows to the new breed Simmental. At the beginning we bred to red and white fullblood Simmental, but after only a couple of years we put our main focus on black and solid red Simmentals. We along with about 10 to 15 other breeders pioneered the black Simmental breed. At that time, it was considered a fad today. Black Simmentals are the main staple of the American Simmental breed. Boy what a learning experience! Today you will only find multigenerational homozygous black and polled cattle on our ranch. Homozygous black and polled is what we do. What challenging years 2022 & 2023 has been, noted for two severe cold winters back-to-back. A cold and wet spring that turned dry a little too soon. Along with a tough summer, environment filled full of grasshoppers, nasty fly infestation that drove cattle to pile up and to be uncomfortable with little relief, for over 70 days along with never-ending smoke-filled skies from the Canadian wildfires lasting for several months that covered Montana and the Dakotas. All this put a big stress on cattle that resulted in lighter weaning weights and more open cows than normal. No matter the breed. In some cases weaning weights suffered by over 100 lbs. Most will agree 30 to 75 lbs less was the norm. Some producers suffered big time, breed up losses as high as 70%, but 20-30% opens were heard of everywhere, and were not uncommon. At Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we lost a few more cows to breed up than normal, but not overly abnormal. We believe our firm commitment to cowherd fertility and fleshing ability without over emphasizing terminal traits rose to the occasion and paid off in a big way. The calves did come in lighter than in the past, but they again maintained much better than many ranching operations did. We strongly believe that our firm commitment to put the cow/calf man first and genetically blending genetics that work when the going gets tough is why they still performed better than average. The set of bulls we are offering this year are tried and proven to hold up when times get tough. They came through a very harsh cold winter and spring, along with a challenging summer without extra pampering or creep feed. These cattle are bred for the tough environments Montana and the Dakotas produce. These cattle are bred to perform and have proven they have the right genetic balance to survive. As you analyze this set of profit driven bulls, you can be assured they are designed to keep you the rancher profitable, they are a genetic blend that will prosper wherever they are put to use. You don’t have to worry if they will hold up. The biggest and most

We will offer free keep of your bull until the first of April. At that time we will semen test and give your bulls a breeding exam and deliver them free of charge up to 500 miles. The bulls will be delivered to your ranch or in some cases when there are multiple owners of cattle on the truck and there is a need to unload and sort cattle, we may ask that you meet us at a central location that is convenient to both parties. For cattle selling over 500 miles away, we may have to hire a trucking firm to help with delivery, if so, we will guarantee delivery cost not to exceed $300 per bull. In most cases, we will deliver them ourselves, but occasionally we will put the bull on a commercial truck that is reputable and conscientious. For purchases of cattle a long distance away, we ask that you be flexible on delivery dates in case we have the opportunity to send your bull your direction earlier than April 1st. When purchasing a bull from Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we take responsibility in delivering a healthy, breeding bull. We will take responsibility of injury or death loss while the bull is on our ranch. Responsibility of your bull purchase begins when he reaches your ranch or delivery point. BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE

All bulls selling will pass a complete breeding soundness exam before delivery on or about April 1st. All bulls are guaranteed for fertility and genetic soundness for the first breeding season. If a bull is proven to be a non-breeder for fertility or a genetically caused soundness condition, we will replace the bull with a satisfactory replacement, issue credit of the purchase price to be used in future sales, or refund the purchase price. This guarantee does not cover broken legs, infectious disease, miss-management, neglect or frozen scrotal or foot rot. We will stand by any breeding tool injury or a bull’s foot or leg issue that occur because of normal everyday wear and tear. Customer satisfaction is our goal. We have done our best to honestly represent the offering as they are, however our customer satisfaction guarantee protects you against getting cattle that are not what you thought they are. SPRING SIMMENTAL BULLS

THE SPRING BULLS

This set of bulls have been raised in a tough but natural setting, they were born into a darn tough, cold and snowy spring. They definitely were tested on their ability to survive cold, and wet nasty conditions. Summer seemed to be ok, but grasshoppers and a very hard to control fly problem kept cattle uncomfortable for about 2 months. I don’t think I ever saw flies so persistent and mean. These bulls came in a little lighter than normal, but they certainly developed very nicely on a low mega cal ration that was designed to grow the bulls not fatten them, they sure had a nice winter to help them develop. We went to a zero tolerance on disposition and it shows these bulls are very quiet and easy to be around. If any of them showed any aggression or bad nervousness, they met the castrating knife, no matter how good they looked. We truly feel this set of bulls will add value and meet the most demanding criteria. We know they are genetically superior and will offer you the cowman genetics that will keep you on track, no matter what direction you take. They will work on the range, the feedlot, and on the rail. Rest assured they will enhance a great eating experience for the consumer, all at a high level of efficiency.

This bull is actually a late born fall calf that was orphaned. We had a cow slip a calf early January so decided to see if this calf would take her. He did so, and he was raised with the spring bulls. He is a good one, but had a different beginning in life. We never tried to reintroduce him to the fall bulls, so we have lotted him as #1. You have to admire this bull, he had a rough start in life but certainly has proven himself to be a top bull prospect. A Gipper son that excels in body length and performance. He is as growthy as most of the fall bulls, but is one of the youngest by age. You have to analyze him on his own merit, I think you will like him.

This is a bull that earned the #1 highest 205 wt, with a 205 wt of 813 lbs. He is a bit bigger framed bull that offers a lot of gas. If you like cattle that perform at a fast pace and produce lbs, he is a top candidate. His dam is consistent, always brings in a big one. Not only did he wean heavy, he was one of the highest ADG bull at 3.95 per day, just short of 4 lbs on a ration designed to gain 3.25, he is a powerful pound-maker.

This bull is special and offers a unique pedigree that is outcross to most Sim-Angus, Cattle Pounder certainly earned a spot in our program, and you will see more of them. This bull deserves to be on everyone’s list. Don’t miss the opportunity. He comes from a top set of cow families with superb udders. I highly disagree with this bull’s bwt EPD, we used Pounder, Downpour, a Rainfall son, and Colorado. All on heifers with no problem, every one was absolutely more calving ease and light birth wt then big birth wt.

One right after another, these HeyDays show you why they are the bulls to put together and to put on British bred cows. They simply take the guess work out of producing easy fleshing, thick bodied, scale crushing genetics that produce pay weight and dollars in the bank. Get geared up to sire cattle with a big, deep sided look. This bull is classy and very eye pleasing. These Favors certainly bring out the best when it comes to body style. The G57 cow is so good, she is deep, thick, and easy fleshing, along with an excellent flawless udder. We don’t have any Favors in production, but we feel they will be very useful. This bull will be an excellent choice when it comes to both pay weight and replacement females. One thing for sure, they will be the right kind and size.

Yes, this bull is a prime example of why we continue to use Range Boss, after ten years of use, he just is consistently good. Sometimes folks get wrapped up in the next unproved bull that may or may not let you down. Range Boss stood the test of time and certainly will go down as one you can count on at the Diamond V. There is nothing as old genetics we call them proven genetics, Range Boss proved to be consistently good.

Here is the first of several Jail Breaks we will offer this year. This bull is strong in his makeup, very well put together, and has excellent performance stats. We brought Jail Break into use on our heifers for calving ease with the hopes of getting more than just a live calf. He worked well for calving and his progeny performed well. This bull is out of a mature cow that is a little bigger framed, we sure like the results of this matting. This bull should really sire the right kind, thick, deep, and performance packed, the daughters should be excellent uddered and produce carcass merit that will be good as well.

This bull is certainly out of one of the very consistent cows on the ranch. He is one of the last Conoco’s to sell, as Conoco is deceased and the semen is gone. This bull is very clean in his makeup, up headed and fancy from end to end. Our Conoco daughters are favorites, very typy and eye catching, sensible sized and perfect uddered. The B90 cow just puts another layer of good genes in this bull. He will sire feeder calves that weigh and pay. They will be fancy and valuable.

This bull is a doer. He lost his dam to lightning in early June. We did not have another cow to put him on, and did not pull him out of the herd. He learned how to rob and did very well for himself. He weaned with the rest of the calves at 708 lbs, he was rationed with the bunch, but probably should not have been, but it was good indexing 107 at weaning. He is not an overrated robber before his dam got struck, he looked to be headed to the top, so buy with confidence, he is a solid genetic opportunity.

This calf is one of the very youngest bulls in the offering. He holds the #2 weaning wt in the pen at 812 to index 122. I sometimes wonder if young calves have the advantage on 205 wt adjustments, but I will say this bull is 75-100 lbs. heavier than the calves his age. His dam is a real gem, very complete, very well made, and a real genetic breeding piece. His sire HeyDay without a doubt, is siring some of the most consistently good cattle for us, and reports around the country say the same. Take a look, only 79 lbs at birth, and 713 at weaning, out of a 2 year old dam that goes back to one of our most productive Angus Cows. I feel it is fitting for this well made baldy bull to follow his brother into the ring for you ranchers that want to add a baldy to your program, here are 2 excellent opportunities. This bull is out of a big volumed easy fleshing great uddered cow that certainly works hard as a mother. These are the first War Paints for us and we will keep using him in our baldy lines, he is very consistent and sure sires quality with consistency. I give these War Paints a big nod of satisfaction.

This bull is hard for us to let go, and maybe we should be keeping him to add to our bull battery as a heifer bull. We think he would work well for us. I’m not recommending him for everyone because of his 81 lb birth wt, but he certainly has a cow family that calves easy, along with the fact his sire Crossfit was the high seller at Lassle’s and he was sired by Sitz Steller. But that is not his biggest asset, it is his cow family, so very right for the times, moderate, deep, easy keeping, and easy on the eye with a superb udder to boot. What I am saying here is an opportunity to raise sensible sized, neat made replacement females.

Oh my goodness, here is a real genetic blend out of a 2 year old Eagle daughter out of the powerful C9 cow, and sired by Gipper, our calving ease heifer bull. This combination reads very well on paper and genetically he comes from one of our top producing cow families. With the calving ease of both Gipper and Eagle, this is a unique pedigree that should offer excellent opportunity. You will like this bull.

Here is a real nice Jail Break out of a Franchise 2 year old mother, going back to the very productive Z80 cow. It looks like the stars line up well here. Great genetics and excellent performance backed by a rock solid cow family. The Franchise bull was the rock star of everyone’s breeding program a few years ago. We sure like the daughters and Jail Break was a top choice in our heifer AI project and will continue to be.

There is a little more frame and a little more performance in this bull’s blood. He is for the cowman that wants to add some extra gas and pounds, but still maintain a solid set of daughters especially with Ego anchoring this genetic package on his sire side and the very productive E55 as his granddam.

This is another 1/2 blood sired by HeyDay and out of a very productive Angus cow we purchase out of the Vermillion Ranch 6 years ago. This will be her last calf as she stayed until she got to old and had to leave. No doubt there is a lot of good in this bull, he will sire above average performance, and I expect very good females to retain. A very easy to be around personality to boot.

Here is a 1/2 brother to Lot 42, both sired by HeyDay. I really like this bull’s cow family, very well made and super dispositioned. There is a lot of cow power represented in this one. These HeyDays one after the other are peas in a pod, and are way above average in their dispositions and ability to lay on the fleshing ability and pounds. There are bulls and then there are breeding bulls that offer more, HeyDay is one that offers more.

We don’t tolerate problem cows, any cow that fails to meet our standards, leaves the herd as a cull cow headed for a packing plant.

This bull offers a real well balanced package that should make any cowherd a very valuable genetic package. His cow family has been very productive and certainly offer fleshing ability and udder quality to the mix. His kind are survivors and can make it through the tough weather conditions the Midwest gets thrown at them.

WE STILL DO IT FOR YOU Many breeding programs have moved to video sales, and like the idea that it takes less help and you don’t have to upset or hassle the bulls. We feel that by bringing them in helps you validate your choice, watch their disposition, and also helps the rancher that didn’t get his first choice to select another bull without having to move and go outside while the sale is going on. We also believe some videos don’t necessarily offer quite as much true image as the actual animal presents. Yes, it takes more work and effort but you’re our valued customers are worth it.

Here is a very good bull out of Jail Break, and a very nice 2 year old dam by PayDirt. We really like the PayDirts they weigh up at weaning and the mother cows are outstanding. Jail Break is new to our program and we used him successfully in our 1st calf heifers for calving ease. He offers a nice balanced complete profile from calving through carcass merit.

Out of a 2 year old heifer and Jail Break this bull is very well balanced and offers the best when it comes to top of the line cow families, and his genetic line up is first class all the way. His granddam is the best always brings in a very powerful calf, this year a heifer, udder quality and broodiness is top tier.

This bull is a twin, he definitely did not perform like one. Since he was a twin he was in a contemporary group by himself. If he was rationed with the group, he would have had a weaning index of 107. This bull is very eye catching and he has a very mild easy going temperament. The maternal side of the equation is very good, super udder and a big volumed long bodied look.

This bull is NICE. He has caught my attention at a very young age and still does. If performance cattle with a little extra punch is your criteria, take a look here. His dam is a 10 year old cow that always puts her best in her calves year after year. I truly believe that Pounder will put one more layer of greatness into the mix. You will like the replacements and the steers will be valuable as well. He should add longevity to his daughter and they will get the job done. There is not much risk here.

Wow, here is a bull that boast longevity, his dam is a 13 year old cow that is very consistent. He is out of our high selling Rezult Angus bull 3 years ago, selling to Murry Murnion of Jordan. He likewise came from a dam with excellent longevity and maternal excellence. This bull will sire a nice set of steers that should ring a bell on sale day, the daughters will have excellent udders and be productive.

This bull is a big ribbed, stout, easy fleshing bull with a lot of eye appeal. He comes by it naturally being out of E101 the big stout and easy fleshing and the great Rezult bull as his sire (read front footnotes on Lot 57). This bull will bring performance to the table. His dam got sick last spring so it did affect this bull’s performance some, she survived and is bred back. I think it was a case of too much hard winter.

This bull is a red carrier, he comes from a very big stout cow that is one of the ranches favorites. She is a heavy milker and can really raise a top calf. She is a little on the heavy milking side, so I recommend to use this bull on cows that could use a little extra milk. I feel there is a lot of good to be offered in this bull, he should produce pay wt and easy keep calves.

I really like this bull’s pedigree and cow family. He is out of a very good 2 year old TopShelf daughter, possibly my top choice of our 2 year old heifers, so easy to be around, big volumed and a perfect udder. There is no doubt he has a real cow family backing him. His sire Jail Break looks to add another generation of top genetics. This bull was only 77 lbs at birth, and performed very well for having a young 2 year old mother. If you like cattle that are moderate, thick, easy fleshing, easy going, and productive, here is a nice option.

This bull has a great 2 year old dam that will rise to the top as a producer. He is anchored by a big stout granddam that is the dam of Lot 25. I truly feel that his sire Pounder is one of the elite breeding choices in today’s current bull battery. I think this bull will add a little extra frame, but still offers excellency, the udder quality behind him is very good.

This bull comes from a real attention getting cow. Whenever you see this cow, she always presents herself as a classy high volumed clean made genetic breeding piece. This bull by Pay Dirt will add to an already good cow line. The Pay Dirts are a little more framey but very top notch cattle. He is the sire of Pounder a bull that we feel is the next generation of greatness. No doubt, great udders on a very good set of replacement are the future here. The steer calves will have great value all the way through the chain and on to the dinner plate.

Here is a very complete Conoco purebred , he should really put feeder calves in the pen that are above average performers. I just can’t say enough about the value of Conoco. These cattle work! He comes from a bigger stouter cow family. They are explosive in their rib shape and offer capacity and stoutness.

I like this bull, he is classy in his design, he is clean made, strong topped, and real easy to be around. He should sire excellent feeder calves that are long sided and performance orientated. You will enjoy a good uddered performance orientated set of replacement females.

If you like moderate thick easy fleshing cattle, take notice here. I tried to buy this bull’s granddam as a bred heifer, ran her to $7500, had to let her go. When the opportunity rose to own the heifer calf she was carrying, I couldn’t resist. So the story goes, this bull is out of that cow line. I feel the Favor bull adds another great cow family, the Sugar cow into the equation, this bull could be a sleeper, watch for him he has great potential.

This bull is one to own, his 14 yr old dam sold for $30,000 out of the Deer Valley Angus program. I bought her in the Hays Ranch Hudson Pine Dispersion on her own merits as a very good well made Angus Cow. I only found out about his earlier value after I bought her. She will be 15 yrs old this spring, and this will be her last calving season, but she proved herself to have excellent longevity, and yes she is out with the mature cows, no extra pampering. We mated her to HeyDay and this is the result a very complete calf with very good eye appeal and performance. It is my bet that females out of this bull will make your mouth water, you will like them.

Out of the dam of our super thick Ego sire. This bull’s dam is starting to show her age, but still will calve one more time this spring, it’ll be her last. She has been one of our elite Angus cows and her time on the ranch was always positive. Good, cows get old way to quick. This Favor son is clean made and has a neat look about him. I don’t like making excuses but if his dam was in her prime, this bull would have likely been in the front pen, don’t over look him.

This bull has a hard luck story that turned out positive. In the big spring storm he drifted and ended up in another pasture. We didn’t catch it and his dam dried up and he was orphaned. Well anyway, we just left him out with the cows, because he seemed to be getting along fine. He robbed to make a living and he made the bull pen indexed 101, and probably should not have been ratioed with the main bunch, but he was. Anyways here is a very good thick made bull that has a great future ahead of him.

These Epic cattle are very popular, so we decided to try him. We like the results as a calving ease line. They are very clean, well balanced, and eye appealing. They are moderate framed and will be smaller framed, so we recommend them to use on cattle that are larger framed and need a little less birth wt. The Epic’s are very desirable in their kind and type.

This young calf in a higher performing Gipper son, out of a 2 year old daughter of the great 9926 Angus cow, the dam of Lot 66 and the high API sire Guardian. There should be excellent genetic merit blended together here. I truly feel he could be an excellent option for those younger females that need a little more calving ease protection, and still not give much up on performance. I feel this bull won’t let you down.

We introduced Favor into our AI line-up a few years ago, and decided to mate him to some of our top producers. This bull’s dam is certainly a cornerstone in our cow herd. She is thick, deep, and very broody, her udder is the best. Favor adds Sugar 4C to the mix. You should enjoy cattle that are easy fleshing and work in every phase of the beef chain.

As you go through the bull pens, you will find this bull in a real stout pen of thick bodied cattle that are genetically superior. This bull is one of the lead offs. These Ego sons are the cowboy kind, they are going to sire uniformity and fleshing ability.

BALANCED TRAIT APPROACH It is our belief when breeding cattle the “BALANCED TRAIT APPROACH” is the right one! We want as much performance as we can get while maintaining that “Critical Balance” of calving ease, cowherd and feedlot efficiency and proven carcass value. All the while, never forgetting the unmeasured traits of structural soundness, udder quality, and attachment, mothering ability, vigor at birth, disposition, fertility, and longevity.

Here is a thick, deep made Gipper out of a 2 year old Boulder dam. There is an extra layer of calving ease, and carcass value in this bull. You can sure use him on a set of cows that need a little extra calving ease. He should sire thick easy keeping cattle that are moderate and sensible sized.

This bull has a little extra gas in his performance tank. Out of a very nice 3 year old dam and Atlas. Expect cattle that have excellent performance and are very quiet, and easy going. This bull’s dam is a super uddered TopShelf out of an exceptional Range Boss cow. There is a lot of performance value blended in this bull.

If you need to add a little more milk, here is one to check out. He is a real nice made bull with a ton of maternal and disposition blended into a bull that is right for the times. We retained his sire Atlas, because of his big stout look and build. He sires them with a little extra frame and they perform well.

This bull should help you get into the calf raising business. His cow family is a heavy milking bunch that always bring good useful calves to the weaning pen with a Boise dam, you know the calves will be thick, deep, and maternal.

Here is a bull with a little different twist to his pedigree out of a Stone Cold momma, and his granddam is by the Great Vermillion bull VRD. His two year old dam will be a heavy milker, and should really fire as a top producing cow. Put Jail Break into the mix and you can expect nice moderate cattle with calving ease. There is a lot of potential in this outcross bull.

This Steller son is a red carrier. The Sitz Steller cattle are some of the Angus breed most respected and sought after cattle, you can bet that this bull will add excellent value to his offspring. His dam is a hard working productive cow that is perfect uddered and nice to be around.

We used the Justice bull to enhance his ability to sire big volumed, deep sided, calving ease cattle. This bull certainly offers new genetics in the Sim-Angus lineup. Here is an easy fleshing cow family with outstanding udder quality backing him up.

SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR USING YEARLING BULLS

We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better, over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls.

Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

Now here is a very young bull late in the sale that offers top weaning performance, and a powerful pedigree with Atlas, Resource, Payweight and Range Boss, all contributing to his top notch performance. He is destined to be a valuable asset to the rancher that buys him. He will add a little extra frame and length to boot.

A younger bull later in the sale that offers excellent value. This pen of bulls are younger with valuable performance and breed potential. He is a HeyDay out of an Eagle, a nice combination that works.

Like so many in this pen of bulls, a little younger with excellent genetics that will sire cattle that perform on the range, in the feedlot, and on the rail. There is excellent maternal value here.

I like this bull, he is out of a young 2 year old Cowboy Cut daughter and Epic, a new AI bull we introduced to our program for calving ease and disposition. This bull is the result. He will be a more moderate sized bull at maturity, but we expect him to be a safe calving ease bull that offers excellent maternal values and outstanding udder quality.

Baldy lovers take note, I see a bull that could sire some show steers here. He is very well put together with a clean well extended frontend that blends into a wide topped, deep sided bull with a big well spring rib shape that ends up with a powerful big butt end. He is a 5.5 to 6 framed bull that definitely looks the part. Note: He had an eye injury that left him blind in one eye, it is healed well, and you can hardly tell it at all. It does not bother him and most could never tell, but he can’t see out of that eye. An injury, a long ways from the heart, and does not bother him at all. He is a valuable breeding piece.

One of the last Conocos to be offered in the sale, he is a nice moderate framed bull that offers that deep sided clean made Conoco look. He should do an excellent job on a set of English bred cows that need a little extra body shape.

This bull is a red carrier, he offers excellent fleshing ability and maternal values, his dam is a powerful big ribbed, easy keeping Capitalist daughter with a superb udder. We like this cow family very well. If you want to add the right kind of cow power to your replacement. This is a good place to look.

An Atlas son that hales from a real nice cow line going back to Cowboy Cut and Range Boss. There is excellent udder quality in his genes. He is thick, deep sided and attractive. Plus he is very easy going.

Here is a new twist to our program, out of our Align bull and a Colorado dam. This bull puts it all together quite well, he darn sure puts a great set of numbers together both performance and EPD’S. He is the youngest of all the bulls to enter the sale offering this year. Here is a great opportunity to acquire fresh new genetics, that should have the strength and values to sire the top performances, in the pasture, the weaning pen, on feed, or on the rail. This bull is young so he is in the youngest pen of bulls. Don’t over look him, he may be the hidden gem.

A young Heyday that is out of a real neat clean made Cowboy Cut dam. If you like moderate, fancy cattle, here is a good choice. The udder quality on his daughters’ will be perfect.

A TopShelf son that is a light birth wt bull that should work well on a set of cows that could use a little extra calving ease. Yet the TopShelf cattle have the genes to perform.

COAT, COLOR, AND POLLED GENETICS IN THE BULLS These bulls were bred for generations to all homozygous black and polled genetics. As you can see everyone is either tested or genetically proven to be homo black. The ones identified as homo polled are genetically proven. Every single one of the bulls are several generations homo polled and all are smooth polled. The ones that just say polled are not tested but we firmly believe that they likewise are homo polled. As for the black factor you will find 5

red carriers in the sale, as they have carried that gene on recessively, they may throw a red calf if their dams are red or hetro black. The majority of the time they will sire black calves on black cows. All the bulls except these 5 will sire black calves, never a red one. The five red carriers will be identified as heterozygous black and in the footnotes they will be identified as red carriers.

Now here is a calving ease specialist born a twin. He is moderate, thick, and easy fleshing. Being a twin out of a 2 yr old dam with no 205 adjustment, because twins don’t get adjusted, in all seriousness this bull should be a heifer bull deluxe. The Tahoe cattle are superior when it comes to moderate hard working cows with excellent udder conformation.

This bull is out of a 10 yr old dam, he has longevity in his blood. He comes from a heavy milking cow that has a real nice level udder, sired by Jail Break. He will keep those calves easy calving, nice patterned and moderate sized.

For you folks looking for a baldy, this bull deserves a look, he is a very neat package, so correct and flashy. I believe there is a lot in the tank, and he will sire more frame and size than he shows, as his dam is a real long bodied cow and Favor sires a clean made profile, with a little more frame than this bull shows. This one maybe the sleeper of the whole event.

This bull has the genetics to sire cattle with plenty of power, the Atlas cattle have a touch more frame and length of body. His dam is a young Cowboy Cut daughter out of our big thick stout made herd sire Ego.

QUICK GUIDE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

20

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes.

FALL SIMMENTAL BULLS

THE FALL BULLS

This set of bulls certainly were challenged with the weather this year. We feel that they are shining stars and will definitely be contributors to any program. Last winter was brutal to say the least, these bulls performed way beyond where they could or maybe should have. They were never crept and ate out of the bunk along side their dams. When it got -30 to below zero for several days with wind chills of -60 below, these calves took the brunt of it just like the cows, no barn for them. The summer got hot and flies and grasshoppers were out of control, most of the summer was filled with smoke out of Canada. If you are looking for cattle that can handle the elements, these bulls are living proof they work. As you sift through them, you will find both high performance and calving ease lines there are bulls for every program. The bulls were sent to grass mid-May and were run on grass with no supplement until October, then they were brought back to be developed on a low mega cal ration, and were not ever pushed hard. This is when we did a 120-day test, as you can see, they showed their potential to perform without getting a hot ration.

This bull should be staying right here. If you’re looking for a true genetic breeding piece don’t over look this bull. He offers excellent outcross potential to about any program. He is solid black, without a white hair. Very well put together, moderate framed, with a big wide top and deep quarter, and a cleanup headed front end. The cows that make up his pedigree are easy fleshing big volumed cows with excellent udders. His EPD’s say he is a growth bull with weaning and yearling in the top 10%. His carcass traits are very adequate being in the top 3% REA and top 30% marbling. YG top 30 and carcass wt top 5%. Some can’t see through the numbers but this one is very adequate, and will sire cattle that perform and will not be to terminal, his daughter will be excellent cows, he is one that should add value and eye appeal in every calf. This bull could very well replace his great sire HeyDay, he blew his contemporaries away on test.

Here is an excellent performance bull with outstanding fleshing ability. He is a big stout rugged bull with a great disposition and a pound producing build. These HeyDays are all business. IT MAY BE COSTING YOU MORE THAN YOU REALIZE. So many times I see sale ads that state over 80% of their bulls will work on heifers. Most cowherds consist of 80% mature cows and 20% heifers and first calvers. Do you really want a 65-75 lbs calf out of your mature cows? (It may be costing you more than you realize). Lighter birth weight highly correlates with lighter replacement heifers with a smaller pelvis thus creating more calving difficulties along with weaning weights that result in less money in the bank.

I admire his length, volume and balance along with a great cow family that consistently produces the right kind. The 4B1 cow is a real neat high volume package that passes on her easy keeping qualities. If you want the best when it comes to cattle that can survive when mother nature dishes out a tough environment, make sure this bull is in your pasture. He should sire those easy doers, that don’t require as much care. Note: he did get upset in the picture pen, but has never shown any personability problems, before we will monitor him. I just can’t say enough good about these HeyDays. They simply represent a valuable genetic line that offers the cowman and woman extra earning potential. The steers will weigh like lead, and the heifers will make a valuable addition to any herd. If cattle that produce profit is in your bull hunting plans, then don’t pass up a HeyDay, they are the real deal. Pay weight, feedlot performance, carcass value, and cow power, are all in their genes.

Gosh are these HeyDays thick and deep bodied. This one might even offer a little more as his dam is about as deep and wide as any cow on the ranch. If you are tired of those hard doing fragile cattle that are abundant everywhere, make plans to own this bull, he will straighten out even the hardest doing cattle. Like I have said a bunch of times, gather these HeyDays up they will put value in their calves.

You can count on Begger’s Diamond V Ranch genetics to maximize the trait that counts the most “PROFIT.”

A big volumed stout made Atlas son that absolutely reeks with fleshing ability, he is in that moderate thick full bodied pen of bulls that offer extra capacity. His cow family is flawless when it comes to their udder quality. Take a good look at this bull and his pen mates, they are the right kind.

No wonder this Gipper adds a little extra punch for a calving ease line. His 2 year of dam is an own daughter of Banjo, a bull that we had great hopes for but lost due to a foot injury. This bull is a business man’s bull, use him on those younger cows that may need protected for calving ease and then watch those calves develop into thick easy doing sensible sized cattle that fit the industry.

One thing comes to mind when you see this bull, man is he complete. If the world was full of his kind, the cattle business would be easy. He is out of a very easy on the eye dam, she is absolutely put together like I like them. She is a model cow, very good uddered, deep sided, easy fleshing, and well balanced. I would take a whole herd of her kind in a heartbeat. She is the kind that will survive when the going gets tough. This bull should produce more just like her.

This is a good one, easy fleshing, big ribbed, big butted, and well-constructed. I can’t get enough of his kind they just work in all environments. His kind have the do ability that many of the cattle that are created by chasing extremes are missing. You will be glad this bull is with your cows, because he will sire the profit driven kind.

This is the youngest of the 18 month old bulls, and end of November bull. He is out of a very good deep bodied dam that really puts herself together very well. She has a flawless udder and is very complete, blended with HeyDay just cements the deal. This bull boasts a big weaning wt and index. As you analyze him, just remember he is about 3 months younger than the oldest fall bull contemporaries. I highly recommend that you keep his daughters and his steer calves should be scale crushers.

Here is a good choice for the producer that is looking for a calving ease bull, only 76 lb at birth, out of a 2 year old. Gipper’s strong point is his calving ease. This bull’s dam is a Preacher daughter, they make great cows, he is very quiet natured.

A light birth wt, calving ease bull out of a 2 year old Top Shelf dam. Expect nice performance and calving ease that should protect those younger cows that can use a little more safe calving.

This bull is a great choice for calving ease, just like all the Gippers. You will notice a fairly large offering out of Gipper in both the spring and fall bulls all are out of 2 year old first calf heifers. This bull’s dam is a real fancy made cow with a very nice udder.

This bull is a real long deep sided bull that will keep your frame size in check. His dam and granddam are very stout with an abundance of rib and volume. They are heavy milkers with excellent udders. If you need a little more maternal, here is a nice option.

This is a bull that will keep your frame size in check. You should expect easy born calves that will develop into nice full bodied calves that are not excessively framey. His daughters will be moderate easy keeping, and sensible sized. There should be plenty of performance as his own stats state.

This could be a valuable breeding piece here, he should sire excellent performance and still maintain a sensible frame size. His dam is a maternal sister to the big volumed 217K bull. I admire his granddam a lot, she is very full bodied and has that perfect frame size. Gipper will maintain the calving ease. He is out of a 2 year old dam.

This is a real unique blend of calving ease with Gipper and Eagle, and the Power of Ignite and Unlimited. I expect him to sire a real valuable set of calves, both as feeder cattle or his daughters as cows. He is out of a real nice 2 year old Eagle daughter.

A 1/4 blood out of a very nice 2 year old Angus heifer, she has good cow family backing him, very nice uddered and very good temperament. This bull is a real smooth clean made bull, out of Hercules. He is bred to be a calving ease bull with a clean look. His dam is very eye appealing and attractive, she is very nice uddered. This bull will add that clean long made look and his calving ease should be excellent. I recommend him for use on these young or smaller type cows that need protected for calving ease.

Use this Gipper son to add safe calving, he is lighter birth weighted and is out of a nice 2 year old dam that looks like she will make a great addition to the herd. His granddam calved as a yearling heifer and calved every year since. We like to believe that is extra fertility.

Here is a well put together 18 month old Angus bull that will offer more maturity and flexibility in the pasture. Sired by the Southern Charm son that topped the North Dakota Angus sale and out of a very good 12 year old Hoover dam cow that always puts a nice calf in the weaning pen. The udder quality and calf raising ability of the Hoover dam’s is phenomenal. This bull should really sire a powerful set of replacement heifers.

NO TIME TO LET UP We hear so many say, it doesn’t matter if our calves were light, they bring a lot of money per pound. As we begin to rebuild America’s cow herd, ask yourself “IS IT MY COWS OR MY CALVES THAT PAY THE BILLS!” For the past 10 to 20 years, we have heard a lot of chatter about carcass traits. Many have put a very high emphasis on them. Yes, it is very important to produce cattle that are end product oriented. But overemphasis on terminal trait selections doesn’t necessarily have the cow/calf man’s best interest in mind. Carcass selection is necessary but remember it is a terminal trait. Most cow/calf men rarely capture the rewards. It is a well-known fact that terminal traits are antagonistic to maternal traits. Many have found out the hard way that their cow herds have become less efficient, productive, and profitable. Is a small premium today worth jeopardizing your cowherd. A good balance of all traits is the key. Don’t sacrifice your own cowherd by over emphasizing any single trait. Just remember THERE IS NO GOOD OR BAD EPDS. They are designed to help you increase profitability by making it easier to increase or decrease and improve efficiency traits that need adjusted. Just remember extremes are not always desirable or profitable EPD’s are no different. The highest or biggest number does not always offer the best efficiency or outcome. It takes more than a set of computer generated numbers to create a balanced program. First of all, choose genetics that complement your environment. Choose a program that puts in the extra effort and is built by the owners and

30

operators that calve the cows and do the day to day work. They are the ones that understand how to use a common sense approach. They understand how to blend the genetics to add value WHETHER THE HIDE IS ON OR OFF. First of all, the cowherd must be sustainable. It is important to understand that all cows are not created equally. There are vast differences in cowherd efficiencies, fertility, longevity, her fleshing ability, cow size, udder quality, calving ease, dispositions, foot quality, and a cow’s ability to withstand extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Some cows are better mothers and better calf raisers. The perfect cow must be efficient, sensible sized, easy fleshing, fertile, and problem free. She must be able to survive the tough times with as little extra imputes and labor as possible. She must be productive and produce the performance and pounds to pay the bills. Small calves bring a lot of money per pound, but always come up short compared to efficient heavy calves at sale time, at times over $300 per head difference. Calves from efficient cows put more money in the bank, it is just that plain and simple. So ask yourself again, is it your cows or your calves that pay the bills. At Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we use a well-blended common sense approach that is profit driven to generate dollars and cents. So, the cow-calf man, the feeders, and the packers will all stay profitable and the consumer can enjoy the results. We invite you to come reap the rewards.

BREEDING PHILOSOPHIES We found these 3 breeding philosophies quite interesting and felt they were spot on to our own breeding principles. With permission of a 3 nationally known highly respected Angus breeders we thought they were worth sharing.

MATING FOR OPTIMAL OUTCOMES, NOT EXTREMES By Ellingson Angus, Chad and Stetson Ellingson, St. Anthony, ND

Discovering the ideal percentile range for every trait we measure and understanding how those traits correlate with one another guides us to create the phenotypic makeup desired by our customers. We breed cattle toward ‘the middle’ for most all commercially relevant traits that’s the best method to drive genetic progress on all traits. By continually breeding our cowherd to the middle, we feel our matings can be more about matching kind to kind and less about mating one extreme to the other, thus creating more consistency in the ascending generations.

THE ANGUS COW

By David Brown, Montana Angus The Angus breed’s position as the number one beef breed in the world was built on the back of the Angus cow. She was reliable, productive, predictable, and built for the environment she inhabited. That Angus cow was fertile, functional and possessed a maternal instinct and intelligence that bordered on mythical. In the hills of California, the northern plains of Montana and the Dakotas, the arid Southwest, the corn belt of the Midwest and the hot, humid Southeast, that Angus cow went about her business of keeping countless ranches in the black. The Angus cow began to change with the consolidation of the packing industry and the growth of grid-based marketing taking place over the last twenty five years. During that time span, industry experts began proclaiming that we must add more marbling, more growth and basically more of everything. Genetic trend in the beef cattle business became driven by theory developed in the board rooms of packing houses and in the class rooms of universities. Breeding programs began taking their cues from sale reports, semen companies and marketers intent on creating constant churn. At first the changes were subtle. Today, it’s painfully obvious that the pursuit of more carcass merit and growth came at the expense of the attributes that made the Angus cow the most efficient factory in the business. Ultimately, those paying the steepest price for this conversation are the ranchers whose livelihoods depend solely on efficiently raising cattle in our nation’s harshest environments. These ranchers have seen their margins lessen and inputs increase with every calf crop. That Angus cow which was their most valuable asset twenty five years ago has become one of their costliest liabilities today. That Angus cow has gotten too big for her environment, failing to breed on time; her calf has more genetic potential for weaning growth that can be realized in most real world ranch environments. That Angus cow is often poor footed, poor uddered and requires supervision at calving time. The maternal instinct and intelligence which was a trademark of that Angus cow has been replaced by an instinct to run for the feed truck when the going gets tough.

THE COST OF LIGHT WEIGHT CALVES AT BIRTH

I saw this article in Sydenstricker’s catalog, and thought this article was quite interesting, and spot on to what we observe. Breed Associations still believe a lighter calf at birth is better and calculate that in their EPD’s, and dollar Indexes. We feel many of the real small have problems in the cold and at times with their lungs, and definitely they show up small at weaning time. No,

we don’t like the huge born either, but on cows there is more rewards than losses with 90-95 lb calves. Many of us have a predisposed notion that we want calving ease/low BW herd sires. But, in the Angus breed, do we really have that much problem with big calves? It seems like most of the problems at birth are more linked to abnormal presentations than actual calves that are too big for the cow or even heifer. And, it seemed like maybe those smaller calves just were not as thrifty. We decided to see if we could dig into the data, and see what survivability to weaning really looked like. After all, a small calf at birth doesn’t really help the bottom line if he dies prior to weaning anyway! We divided up four years of spring calf crops into three groups: (light) 69 lbs. or less; (medium) 70-89 lbs.; and (heavy) 90 lbs. and up. We edited out any abortions and all twins. In a nutshell, the death loss at birth through weaning was twice as high on the light calves as it was on the medium calves. The death loss on the heavy calves was the least of the three groups, and it was the least in every one of the four years. We did not differentiate according to cause of death, or whether it was right at birth or later on pre-weaning. We’ve all heard someone say the growth rate of a dead calf is distressingly poor, and took that to mean we needed lighter calves at birth so we would get more of them born alive. Every operation is different, but it certainly appears to us that bigger calves at birth are more likely to still be around at weaning. We would never advocate breeding heifers to anything but a true heifer bull, but our cowherds might be much better served by sires that give their calves more of a head start. A study by the University of Illinois on Sim-Angus cattle reported the same conclusions.

PARTING THOUGHTS

From Bill Begger, Begger’s Diamond V Ranch When I read David’s article it struck a strong note with me the past couple decades, the technical world took over the cattle breeding business. Just like David says AI studs universities, and packing houses started dictating how to breed cattle. I believe using EPDs and all data sources when breeding cattle, but it does concern me when all emphasis is put on extreme EPD’s and numbers with little or no consideration given to physical and mental traits. Many of Americas’ cattleman have lost a lot of ground by doing so. Like David states, bad feet, poor cow efficiency, lack of fertility, and fleshing ability, cows that can’t have a 90 lb calf, mostly due to too much EPD hype and not enough experienced eye. Folks we find it is a true give and take the best way to create uniformity, balance and cattle that work in the real world is from experience day to day observance and blending the best of both worlds. Like Chad and Stetson Ellingsons’ little article states, it is breeding towards the average and understanding that matching kind and not shooting for extremes every time makes for more consistency and will contribute more uniformity and consistency creating less cowherd fall out. The three articles were written by some of the Nation’s well respected Angus breeders. They see the writing on the wall as many astute cattlemen do. We believe our Simmental and SimAngus program will help propel your operation down the right road. They will compliment the Angus, Hereford, and baldy cattle very well. They will enhance fleshing ability, udder quality, and maternal traits. We run our cows rough and tough, we know how genetics work and we have the experience to know the difference. “Yes, we do have to eat them, but we also have to breed them and feed them.” Our genetics are designed to put cow efficiency back in your herd, and they still work very well in the feedlots and packing house, qualifying for carcass premiums, and creating an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer.

The decision you make today will influence the next 20 years. Make it a good one. Use Begger’s Diamond V Ranch seedstock. 31
