Hello and Welcome!
We would like to welcome everyone to our annual production sale. No matter where you live, 2022 came with a whole new set of challenges, but every year we become more resilient and learn to roll with the punches. We started the year off continuing our drought from 2021, but then April brought a full year worth of snow in two weeks and we finally broke our drought cycle….for a couple of months. By early fall we were back where we started and pastures were really showing stress. The calves were weaned earlier than normal this year on September 1st to try and save on the grass. No matter what changes and challenges life may toss at us, the one thing that is always constant is that good, hard working cattle will pay the bills. We all ask a lot from our cattle, and more people are recognizing that Gelbvieh females are some of the hardest working mamas in the industry.
This year we are offering the first sons of our new herd bull additions, as well as larger groups from our senior herd sires. We place a large emphasis on keeping our genetics fresh so we can continually offer fresh bloodlines that will work for our customers. We tend to say it every year, but the set of bulls we have to offer this year is the strongest, most consistent group of bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch. We are incredibly proud of these bulls, the way they’ve developed, and the future in front of them. Our goal is to provide you with genetics that not only make you money, but bulls you’ll be proud to have walking your pasture.
We continue to use the mineral and feed programs developed for us by our nutritionists at Biozyme. The bulls are grown on a forage based ration that allows them to grow at a rate of 3 to 3.5 pounds per day, while still keeping them fresh and not getting overly fat. This has also allowed us to keep them on the same mineral program from conception through sale day. We continue to be impressed by their performance, and their ability hold together when they hit the pasture. This years offering is averaging 3.99 pounds per day since weaning – very impressive given the weather swings we’ve been given this fall and winter!

Don’t dismiss this guy based off of his weaning data. We nearly lost his dam this summer to an abdominal injury, so he effectively weaned himself a month before his buddies. That being said, he’s hit the feedlot and exploded since then - gaining 3.62 since weaning, and 4.29 for the month of December! Boy, talk about a calf that really has the stars lined up in his favor! Sired by EC, and a dam who is quickly moving to the top of our red program, he’s the type you want to latch on to. His dam, D19, has been a Dam of Merit in 2020, 2021 and 2022, the only 3 year’s she been eligible! She has a National Champion pen heifer to her record, a Lot 1 bull through this sale, replacement heifers, and now Kayson, along with a weaning ratio of 105 over 5 calves. This deep red, long sided beef machine was a stand out all summer and tipped the scales at 883 at weaning. After seeing the cow power behind him, and what his sister (G101) has produced so far, I’d be sure to look this guy up on sale day!

6 is the first Balancer bull in the offering, and one of two EC sired Balancers. His dam is a daughter of our B52 Red Angus donor female that Kylee showed with great success as a bred heifer. Our Red Angus cows get AI bred to Red Angus bulls, and then pasture exposed to a red Gelbvieh bull. Over the last couple of years, if there has been a dark red bull in our offering that has grabbed your attention, there’s a good chance B40 was the dam. In fact, out of the 7 calves she’s had, 6 of them have been bull calves. That makes it even more impressive when you consider that 5/6 have made the cut for the sale! Sadly old Tiki didn’t weather the April blizzards real well and fought a hip injury all summer as a result, so this will be her last natural calf in the sale. He’s a good encore to exit on with nearly all his performance EPDs in the top 30% of the breed, and Stayability, CW, and Fat all in the top 15% or better!

We’ve had a lot of success over the past couple years stacking Exact Combination on top of our Yikes females. Calves like Lot 7 are exactly why - masculine looking bulls that put all the pieces together, while stomping down the scales over 800 pounds, over and over again. Kombo certainly got his dams disposition, coming from “Nosey Rosie”. While his BW number might be a little high, the length this guy has accounts for a good part of it.

I’m not sure if there is a black cow that has put more bulls in our Denver pens over the last 10 years than Alvira A31. She’s the definition of consistency, which is really driven home by her weaning ratio of 8 calves at 105 (793 pound average), and being a Dam of Merit along the way! When you can wean off a monster like this guy at 930 pounds and come back in bred up in the fall - that’s getting it done! This guy does have a white ribbon down under his nuts, but let’s be honest - breed him to a group of high percentage Angus cows and you’ll laugh the whole way to the bank with the pounds he’s going to add!
The second of the Balancer bulls sired by Exact Combination. The dam of this bull is simply the backbone of our Red Angus program. She’s the first Red Angus female that we purchased, and eventually made her way to the donor pen. We have retained every daughter from her, and one even earned Kylee some buckles and banners. Unfortunately B52 got injured in the April blizzard. We tried to limp her along all summer to save the calf, but we ended up losing her in July. If you’re looking for a calving ease Balancer bull, backed by one of the strongest most predictable cow families in the program, give this guy a look. He might not have got the highest marks on his report card, but I trust the genetic combination in this one.

We purchased MCCA Filomena 8015F as the high selling female from the McCarty female sale in 2021 for $21,500. Kansas K79 is the calf she was carrying at the time. This non-diluter red calving ease option is the spitting image of his mother - clean fronted, straight in all his lines, and longer than a freight train, while having a great shape to skull and shoulder. A little higher percentage Balancer option, he checks a lot of marks on paper as well with growth numbers in the 30% range, and a top 3% marbling EPD. A great combination when you look at his 82 pound BW and 794 WW. We flushed his dam heavy last summer, and those calves will be coming this spring. Here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor of something special!

Blackout has seen plenty of use as a calving ease specialist in our program over the years, but we’ve found that if you throw some power at him he can do pretty special things. For example, take a look at Lot 14 - Kody is a great combination of top 1% calving ease, while still maintaining rib dimension and thickness. Maternally he is backed by a 5 time Dam of Merit who carries a 102 weaning ratio over 7 calves. This maternal consistency is reflected in his EPDs as well with a Preg30 number in the top 10%, and Stayability in the top 15%. A bull that could work on heifers or cows, he’s certainly worth finding!

Kramer is a calf that has had me intrigued all summer. We didn’t know that these were going to be the last natural Blackout calves at breeding time, but I’m glad we put him with as many powerful cows as we did. A 3 time Dam of Merit for a mama, this guy checks a lot of boxes upon appraisal. Long sided, nice fronted, and a little extra look will grab your attention in the pen. EPDs that are near the top of the stack for Milk, CED, TM, Stayability, Marbling, Fat, and FPI will demand your attention on the paper. Homo Black, Homo Polled!
If there was a calf this summer that kept making us go “Who’s that?” it was Kahuna K75. A calf that is just so different, you can’t help but appreciate him. I wanted to combine Grinders depth and power with the classiness of the Dam of Merit Carly cow - the result is a calf with the poise and presence to show, while still having the raw power and ruggedness of his sire. Gaining at 4.40 pounds and having 9 EPDs in the top 25% really drives home the point for me.
Kennedy is a prime example of what happens when Old School meets New School. K35 goes back to the Esmoralda E08 female from 1995. We were fortunate to purchase a daughter in the VanderVorst dispersion and have tried to retain as many daughtes as possible. Combining these older influenced genetics with today’s new sire power resulted in this unique individual. He should be a tremendous outcross to most programs and certainly deserving of a look come sale day.

as
here’s something a little different - a black Howard son in a calving ease package! If you were here for our open house this summer, you probably found this guy. He was probably the deepest middle black calf in the pasture that day. An earlier maturing bull, he went from 77 pounds at birth to 823 at weaning. Top 20% for CE, BW, TM, DOC and Scrotal, with the rest of his numbers in the top 50% of the breed. Mom has a 101 ratio over 5 calves, so the performance is built in. He won’t be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a calving ease option that keeps the performance built in, you’ll want to keep an eye on this guy!
The only Red Angus bull in this years offering, and man is he a good one! When we were looking for Red Angus sires to use, I came across Propulsion and immediately knew he was one we needed to utilize. You have to appreciate the width and ruggedness of this calf, while still being smooth and good shouldered. After seeing this guy we used Propulsion again and should have more brothers hitting the ground in a couple weeks. Don’t wait for next year to get a son, there’s a great opportunity right in front of you!

I’m going to be blunt, if every Balancer calf looked like Lot 28, we’d be breeding for a lot more of them! This guy is so different, so appealing, and frankly just flat good. An absolute meat wagon, he was a stand out all summer. His dam is a Canadian bred Red Angus female, which means that what you sacrifice in EPDs you make up for in foot and udder quality. When you analyze him, he looks the way you want a herd sire to look - soggy, deep, with an explosive rear quarter. Breed him to your purebred cows to get some wild looking 75% calves, or put him on a group of commercial cows and laugh all the way to the bank. Did we mention he gained 4.89 per day on 90 day test? Wow!

We’ve had more requests every year to add some black Balancer bulls into the sale. When we looked for an Angus sire, I focused in on Stock Fund as an option to utilize Growth Fund’s performance and growth, while adding a little more eye appeal and maternal strength. These Stock Fund calves have really been impressive. A half sister topped our female sale this fall, and all three bull calves are offered in this sale. Soggy middled, strong topped, and moves like a bull should move. Kudos brings a set of EPDs to the table that are about as balanced as you could ask for. With Fighting Irish, Paycheck, and Beech Jet on the bottom side, he’s got maternal covered as well. A bull who will make his mark wherever he ends up at.
The second of three Stock Fund calves, and he patterns exactly like his two brothers that were pictured. Long and deep, but coming from a dam with Legacy and Yikes in her background. A little smaller than his brothers at weaning, he’s been making up for lost time with a 4.76 ADG. Take a look at his EPDs - top 1 or 2% for performance, and 5% or better on the carcass side - that’ll change a set of cows in a hurry!

A half brother to Lot 30 and 31, but this is the combination/calving ease bull of the three. The eye appeal, straightness, and correctness of this guy have made him one of my favorites to watch develop all fall. He’s got the same EPD profile as his brothers - top 1-2% for the money making treats, with a dam combining Legacy and Xavier for a great maternal package. Homo Black, Homo Polled!
but he’s one of a
Gelbvieh to cover our AI heifers in 2021. We run our yearlings in a large rough pasture and it really tests our young bulls. “Houston” as we nicknamed 0166H went down with an injury midway through breeding season, so he only bred a handful of heifers. 76 pounds at birth and out of a Canadian bred Red Angus cow, he’s a great option for fresh genetics for nearly all cow herds.
K21 is the result of a bull purchased from
The second of the two Houston bulls, this guy might the sleeper of the whole sale. 72 pounds at birth from a first calver, exploding to 789 pounds at weaning, and then posting a 4.18 ADG on test - you don’t see that kind of growth out of most calving ease sires. Add in that he’s a non-diluter red from 2 black parents and I think it makes him even more intriguing. Put a star by him and check him out for yourself!

Don’t tell Biden, but Keystone XL is still happening, and he’s standing in the lead-off pen! Not only is Lot 35 a half-brother to PHG Hamilton H10 that topped our sale in 2021 at $31,500, but he also posts the heaviest weaning weight in the offering at 940 pounds. This guy is an absolute truck - solid from front to back, yet only 85 pounds at birth. After Hamilton in 2021, and his EC sired brother that was a high selling bull in 2022, we decided to flush Faye last spring. His Dam of Merit mama is carrying a 109 ratio over her first 3 calves, and as you can tell by the picture, she’s the kind you can build a herd around! She’s carrying a heifer calf this year, so it might be a while before we seen another son - I wouldn’t let this one pass by!

and Gunner, and this is a package that has me very excited. When we purchased Gunner it was with the intent of stacking him on top of Howard and EC to really maximize the strengths of the pedigrees. Lot 38 is a glimpse of what that combination will look like. 841 pounds off of a first calvign EC daughter really shows the strengths of both pedigrees shining through!

His dam is a 4 time Dam of Merit who brings in a top end calf every year. EPD’s from top to bottom that can be appreciated, with a marbling number in the top 10%!
The youngest calf in the sale, but you’d never know it if I covered up his ear tag. You have to be pretty special to make the cut as a later April calf, especially with the April we had during calving. Gunner K124 keeps rolling with every punch that’s been thrown at him, weaning off at 818 and then hitting the feed bunk and putting the hammer down. When we syndicated Hamilton in 2021, we were excited to have raised a red purebred that offered calving ease, growth, and softness, while still being an outcross to many herds. A year later the first Hamilton calves arrived throughout the country and averaged 78 pounds at birth and all were born unassisted. Watching Lot 42 develop has been just as satisfying. With his blood red color, 74 pound BW, and striking eye appeal, there’s something that draws your eye to this calf. A great calving ease option, he’s top 10% for CE and BW, but also Heifer Preg!

We purchased Kristoff’s dam from Cory & Sam Voss in the first Princesses of the Prairie sale. Somehow, through some fancy trading, Anna ended up belonging to Kylee. Harlem is the natural calf of our Blossom B83 donor that sold in the 2021 Princesses sale. We put Harlem in with the show heifers as a 9 month old bull for 2 days so we could get cows moved around, thinking we’d be OK. Here’s a testament to the fertility of the Gelbvieh breed! We were shocked when we got the DNA back on this guy. Kristoff is about as puppy dog gentle as they come. He made the trip to Salina, KS this summer with his dam as Kylee’s cow calf pair, and was champion bull at the ND Field Day in July. A truly unique

We purchased him from Lost River as a potential replacement for Paycheck. We were looking for width, depth, and thickness and he did not disappoint. As much as I like and appreciate the sons, I think his legacy will truly be with his daughters. That said, a bull with as much maternal as Pathfinder should really click with a 2 time Dam
Merit.
have a feeling you’re going to want to keep every daughter out of this guy.

Tracing back to some of the Valley Gelbvieh cows we imported from Canada over 10 years ago, his dam has been a mainstay in our herd. A bull that I think will work on cows, or larger framed heifers.

A black bull with a pedigree as unique as he is. If you’ve been using our black genetics for a while, Path K101 brings some new blood to the table. Yukon and Roy on the bottom side of his pedigree provide the maternal strength of the pedigree, while Pathfinder adds the length of spine and thickness of quarter. Top 5% or better for
Milk, TM, Docility, and Marbling.
This guy is royally bred to be a female maker!
Kurt K65 might be the last bull in the catalog, but he’s certainly no slouch. There’s a lot of power represented throughout his pedigree, clear back to the Esmoralda E08 cow on the bottom side. I count three generations of Dams of Merit on his dams side of the pedigree. If you’re wanting to add consistency to your replacement heifer pen, that’s how it’s done!

I’m thinking that plenty of folks are going to find Finder on sale day. He’s another one of those bulls that just has something about him that catches your eye. Deep, thick, and club calf hairy, he’s put together in a pretty neat package. Add in his EPD’s that put him top 5% or better for Milk, TM, PG30, CW, and Marbling, and you have a truly unique combination. Don’t forget that mama has a weaning ratio of 104 over 9 calves! Homo Black, Homo Polled!
