ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE / FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 2023
1:00 PM / AT THE RANCH NEAR BANCROFT, IDAHO
Welcome to our 13th annual production sale! We truly appreciate your interest and continued support to our program. Our slogan of “Profitable Balanced Breeding, Superior in Function” is our long standing commitment to improving our genetics every generation. We want to see improvement in our cowherd which translates into a better offering of bulls to our customers.
We offer unique, outcross genetics from the common mainstream gene pool. We use what works best in our environment with strict culling practices on fertility, foot quality, disposition, and udder and teat design. Our breeding decisions are not based on exaggerated EPD’s, popularity, or catchy phrases that seem to be in vogue. We know that the bulk of our customers run commercial operations and we raise our cattle as similar as possible to what the cattle will experience at their new homes.
The bulls on offer are fed long hay and a mild grain mix in a 30 acre pasture with spring water and salt and mineral. We feel this is a great way to develop these bulls for longevity and soundness. We PAP tested these bulls in February at the ranch elevation of 5800 ft. Our herd runs up to 8500 ft. elevation but never lower than the ranch location.
We truly feel we have a well designed product, and know that our cattle are hand crafted with attention to detail. Think of it as a small rare find not mass produced in factories. We feed, breed, manage, tag, sort, clip and have our hands on every aspect of our cattle. If any of this finds appeal in your mind, come have lunch, evaluate our cattle, and make your own decision as to who you want your seedstock producer to be.
We will offer to feed the yearling bulls at no charge until May 1, 2023.

“Auto” has earned his stripes here with a tremendous 1st calf crop. His calves are smart with good newborn vigor and then take off and grow. Consistency on display from his line breeding. PAP 40.
We have been breeding multi-generational SimAngus cattle for many years. We have found more predictability and functionality in our herd by linebreeding to the genetics which have excelled in our environment. We love the performance, mothering ability and fertility in our SimAngus cows. Newborn calf vigor is excellent, marketing demand for SimAngus sired calves is strong, and they produce a superior end product. Our prefix has included JB, JBD, and now VE and dates back to 1983. We have found the Fleckvieh influenced SimAngus to be superior to the average SimAngus cattle. Our focus will remain to offer these FleckAngus bulls in volume, unlike those available elsewhere.

Our Angus are very unique, linebred, maternally efficient, and sound cattle. We are strict in our genetic selection to avoid extremes and potential defective lethal genes. We want moderate, robust, well muscled bulls to exhibit breed character, libido, and produce those easy to manage black hided cow herds. We have steered clear of genetic defects because of our long standing awareness of dirty pedigrees. We will not sell carriers of a genetic defect or commercial bulls of unknown parentage. We list the EPDs that we have found to be the most important in real world ranching.

Our nucleus herd of Fleckvieh are being developed in our same rugged conditions of the west that the rest of the herd experience. We are striving for moderate framed, easy fleshing, brilliant uddered females to produce some of the few fullbloods available in Idaho and surrounding states. We are also developing many polled individuals to appeal to more customers. We produce non-diluters so there is no chance of getting grey calves. In our experience the Fleckvieh cattle have the lowest PAP scores and thrive in elevated regions.

This is a really nice team of Percheron mares that will make you a great sleigh or wagon team. Dolly is 10 years old and currently in foal to our Belgian stud, Boomer. June is a 16 year old mare and open. She was previously used as a hitch horse team before we got her. They are currently being used as a feed team for our cows and horses. You can’t go wrong with these gals!

Older team of Percheron geldings. They are around 24 years old but still lots of life in them. They have mostly been used for feeding cows their whole life, hooked to sleigh or feed wagon. They have been to the Caribou County Fair a few times and showed, and they have pulled a wagon at two different weddings to haul people. They have also pulled two different hearses from Hooper church in Soda to the cemetery in Soda. I’ve fed cows with them by myself for 3 years.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers.
Birth Weight (BW), Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to other sires.
Yield Grade (YG), Yield grade score.
All-Purpose Index (API) [SIMMENTAL], evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Cow Energy Value ($EN) [ANGUS], expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
Weaned Calf Value ($W) [ANGUS], the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/ head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F) [ANGUS], calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait interrelationships. Typical feedlot grain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.
The Pulmonary Arterial Pressure Score or PAP Score is a tool that when utilized properly can be helpful I preventing and reducing the incidence of High Altitude Disease. The classic signs of High Altitude Disease are lethargy, edema of the brisket, pneumonia like symptoms and diarrhea. This disease can manifest in a variety of subtle ways as well such as poor fertility, chronic pneumonia, poor weight gain. The score is achieved by placing a long catheter into the main pulmonary artery which is the first artery leaving the right side of the heart and entering the lungs. A mean pressure is recorded at this location which becomes the particular animals PAP Score. In general the lower the score the less likely an animal will develop High Altitude Disease and since the PAP score is a highly heritable trait using herd sires and dams with lower scores will reduce the incidence in calves as well. Many factors are involved in the final score of a particular animal such as altitude, time at altitude, age at test, handling methods, previous sickness etc… IN addition with the wide variability of the end environment of the bull it is difficult to apply a concrete “cut off” score for everyone but should be readily used when comparing bulls in a particular sale. Feel free to call with any questions on High Altitude Disease and how to utilize PAP score in our herd.
