EMBRACE
Charity Report 2022
Charity Report 2022
accept (a belief, theory, or change) willingly and enthusiastically.
/ɪmˈbreɪs, ɛmˈbreɪs/
As Jayne Ann Krentz said, “Embrace the unknown, it is the only certainty”. When patients don’t have the funds for their treatments, and they come to the Charity Team for help, they have no idea what lies ahead for them, whether or not their application will be accepted. They’re walking with hands outstretched, feeling their way through in the dark, but determined to keep moving forward. In the same way, the Charity Team has no fixed pledge for donations; no money is guaranteed, and they have no idea how much assistance will be needed for the needy. But they still continue to raise funds, to strive to help as many needy patients as possible.
As we embrace what we don’t know, we simultaneously embrace what we do know; namely, what is around us. One’s community is their strength, for no man is an island, we are each a piece of the continent. Penang Adventist Hospital would be nowhere without its community support, and we can only hope to give back as we have received. In this respect, the Charity Team always endeavours to offer the best they have to the community.
As we embrace the community, we have to embrace the individual. Love forms a circle, the direct result of people opening their hearts to each other. As the donors give what they have to help the needy, the needy have confidence that the Charity Team will be able to help them, and the Charity Team trust in the donors to show
their generosity. In each step we take, there is trust and there is faith. To embrace another human being is the warmest feeling of all, to accept others wholeheartedly and to love them unconditionally. God commanded us to “Love others the way I love you”, and so we shall. The human connection links us all by our love and support for one another, no matter our background or our circumstances. This unbreakable bond can shatter any obstacles placed in its way.
As always, in what we have accomplished and what we hope to accomplish, we thank our donors for their unfailing support. We hope that as we continue to act as God has guided us to, to serve and wholeheartedly embrace the community that you will continue to act alongside us.
Gold bless you as always for your generosity.

The journey to new lease of life begins!
When we “embrace” one another, we show that we care and are there for each other, even in difficult times.
In conjunction with the Lunar New Year, the hospital took the initiative to raise funds and organize a community service project for the residents of Ci Ai Home for the Elderly. On the 11thof February, the PAH F&B team prepared a spread of New Year’s dishes, including Adventist Hospital cinnamon rolls and desserts to spread cheer to the elderly. Besides the food, a donation of everyday items and medical supplies was made. Mr. Ronald Koh, President & Chief Executive Officer also personally prepared ang pow for all the residents and volunteers present.
In conjunction with International Children’s Day, celebrated on 1st June, Penang Adventist Hospital Charity Department organised a programme to spend a Friday afternoon with 13 children from Crystal Family Home Penang on 10th June. Prior to the visit, the children’s wish lists were collected and were fulfilled by PAH staff and doctors.
The staff played 2 ice breaker games with the children, followed by Community Health team and dental graduates shared with the children about puberty and dental hygiene. The children were very participative in Q&A and demo sessions. It was a beautiful afternoon with the children, we see that they enjoyed all activities and loved all the gifts and foods prepared for them. The beaming faces warm our heart.
Spin for Charity had all participants wanting for more during the event on 8th May 2022 at Gurney Plaza. The event welcomed 140 participants to spin together to raise fund for Dr. J. Earl Gardner Fund. The participants had a great workout, spinning to the tune of K-pop, Oldies & Pop, Funky & Cool led by cycle starts from Peak Fitness.
Apart from Spinning, the event offered complementary health screenings, including testing blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels, and counselling. In
addition to these, there were educational programs on health, through the “Know Your Body” program and interactive booths for the public to learn about living a healthier lifestyle.
With such strong support from all walks of life, Spin for Charity surpassed its fundraising target and raised RM225,913 in aid of Dr. J Earl Gardner Fund. A testament of strong community support for those who are in need among us.

Lim Soon Huat, 54.
I had shortness of breath for a few months. After consultation with doctor, I was shocked to learn that I had several blockages and I needed a coronary artery stent placement. My condition worsened over time. My wife was very worried and she would constantly feel my heartbeat when I was asleep, just to check if I was still alive.
With the support of Penang Adventist Hospital Charity Fund, I was able to undergo the surgery. We have to thank Penang Adventist Hospital and donors for giving me a second chance at life.
49.
I have always follow a strict diet and was truly surprised to learn that I have heart disease. We are simple people. The cost of surgery was beyond me. At this difficult juncture, I am thankful to my friends who recommended me to Penang Adventist Hospital, and the initiatives the hospital has for the people in need of medical assistance.
I feel like a brand-new person after the placement of a coronary artery stent. It is my hope that Penang Adventist Hospital will continue with its good work of disbursing fund where they are most needed.
60 superbike riders, decked out in bright pink, formed an entourage and took to the street to raise awareness for breast cancer on 16th October. All the way from Auto City to Gurney Plaza, the riders garnered the public’s interest with their superbikes and handed out flyers to increase the public’s understanding and knowledge. The sight of the bikes zoom past and the roaring sound that they made is an image that will take root in the public’s memory. A total of RM186,451 was raised for cancer fund. We owe the success of the event to all our event partners, riders, sponsors and most importantly, the donors who gave us their unwavering support!
Pink Vroom saw the support from YB Lim Siew Khim, State Assemblyman of Sungai Pinang, Dato Ar. Yew Tung Seang, City Mayor of Pulau Pinang and YB Teh Lai Heng, State Assemblyman of Komtar. The event’s closing ceremony was graced by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yew and YAB Puan Tan Lean Kee.
Besides continuously promoting breast cancer awareness, the hospital, with the support from a generous donor who is passionate in advocating early screening saves lives, has donated 200 free mammograms for ladies in B-40 categories. All 200 free mammogram slots were fully signed up instantaneously.
The event also offered complementary health screenings, including blood pressure, glucose tests and counselling.
The success of Pink Vroom was largely due to the support of many like-minded partners; Gurney Plaza, the venue sponsor, Harley Davidson Penang, various rider’s group such as Ladies of Harley, Harley Owners Group, Ducati Club Penang, Lady Bikers Utara, Throttles Angels, Iron Ladies Biker and Derhaka Bikers.

12th of December 2022, Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) celebrated its 98th Anniversary, marked by the Christmas Tree Lighting Fundraiser. In celebration of PAH’s 98th anniversary, we’re piggybacking off of the festive season to have the hospital completely decked out in Christmas trees, 98 to be exact.
The fundraiser saw an acapella performance by God Ambassador, a group formed by the nursing staff, all of whom are alumni of Adventist College of Nursing and Health Sciences. They came together to perform a medley of warm and inspiring Christmas songs that brighten up the night.
Through this event, a total of RM 434,062 was raised in aid of Dr. J. Earl Gardner Fund. The hospital extend its unending gratitude to the community for their fervent support. Who we are today, and who we strive to be in future, is all because of you, the community. Just as you continue to stand beside us through thick and thin, we aim to be a hospital that will always stand by the community.
Embrace love is a continuous process of caring, supporting, and being there for one another.
“I am very fortunate to be introduced to Penang Adventist Hospital Charity.
Both my legs were in such pain that I could not work. The hospital has very skilled and professional surgeon, I could stand and walk with walking aid in less than 48 hours post-surgery!
All staff, from Charity Team to clinical team treated me very well despite my financial statues.
They embrace me for who I am and gave me a pair of new knee so that I can continue to make a living for myself. “

For more than 30 years, Mr. Ho Chan Hing farmed paddy to provide for his family. Supporting a family of 5 is not an easy task, but he persevered and his family lived an adequate life. As his children are all grown up know, Mr. Ho has less to worry about and more to look forward to.
But, just when he thought everything was peachy keen, a crisis arose once again. The yield of his paddy fields had been low for more than 7 years, and they relied on the aid of Agrobank to sustain their living. Then, Mr. Ho began to develop symptoms of illness. In September 2022, he felt sharp pains in his chest and back. His wife brought him to Penang Adventist Hospital all the way from Kepala Batas as they failed to get treatment from nearby clinics.
There, he was diagnosed with left empyema thoracis. The doctor advised him to undergo surgery immediately, as his condition was life-threatening. We will never forget how terrified and helpless his family members were when they approached us for charity assistance. Mr. Ho is only 57 years old, described by his wife as the backbone of the entire family. Entire buildings collapse if their base is attacked. His family could not even entertain the thought of losing him.
RM20,000 of charity assistance, 40% of the total bill, was disbursed to assist Mr. Ho. The family mentioned that it went a long way towards lessening their financial burden. We are glad to see him returning to his green land, after defeating an illness that could have taken his life in a snap. His wide smile is a testament to the donors’ support for the charity work of our hospital.
Life can be hard sometimes but storms do not last forever. Embrace life’s challenges, for the sun always shines after the storm.
“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise again.”

Whenever Pn. Rashida talks about her son, Andy, her eyes shine. Mohamad Andy, only 14 years old, is a top student in a cluster school, managing to balance excelling in academics and his hobbies, sports and drawing. He’s represented his school for a variety of competitions and won many awards. His home is bursting at the seam with reminders of his accolades, medals and trophies everywhere. To top it all off, his great personality wins over anyone in a heartbeat.
However, in the middle of 2022, his mother was shocked to see a significant curve in his spine when he walked out of the bathroom half naked. She whisked him off to the doctor, only to discover he had developed adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), with spine curvature at 65°. Recently, Andy had begun to tire easily, and walking or standing for long periods of time would quickly become too much for him; now they knew why. It was suggested that the problem was due to changes in the spine, as a result of rapid and unpredictable growth spurts during puberty; after all, AIS isn’t uncommon in adolescents. With the severity of the curve, and the strain it was putting on Andy’s lungs, the doctors recommended he undergo surgery immediately.
However, the insurance company denied their request, claiming it was a congenital condition and therefore did not meet their requirements. The estimated cost for the surgery amounted to RM130,000, far beyond the family’s capabilities. In despair, they approached for charity assistance and RM50,000 was disbursed for Andy’s surgery. As RM130,000 and RM50,000 are separated by a large gap, the Charity Team organized a press conference to help raise more funds. Simultaneously, the family began to look for other means of funding. In a very brief period, RM80,000 was successfully raised, thanks to the power of the public. The family had also been informed that Andy’s father’s company insurance would cover RM45,000.
Andy’s surgery went off without a hitch; he was even walking around less than 24 hours after the surgery! The curve in his spine had been corrected to less than 9° and he’d grown 5cm. As the schools reopened, he’s able to be active again, and join the cadet march like he always wanted to. Fortunately, as Andy’s surgery had gone smoothly and without complications, the final bill was only close to RM85,000. The remaining funds collected will be used to assist other needy patients, the circle of kindness continues. Indeed, when ‘I’ is replaced with ‘we’, illness becomes wellness. Surrounded by kindness and prayers from his family, the hospital, and the public, Andy had become well again.

En. Mohd Arafat Aboo Baker & Puan Norzuraini were in a predicament. What was originally thought of as gastric turned out to be a major heart blockage!
“My heart skipped a beat when we were told that my husband was diagnosed with major heart blockage.” said Puan Norzuraini, En. Arafat’s wife*. “We did not see that coming. We thought it was simply gastric and with some medication and he would be well enough to continue with his daily life. What’s more, Raya celebrations were just a few days away.”
En. Arafat was a walking time bomb, he could hardly walk a few hundred meters without feeling tired and stressed. He couldn’t climb stairs nor walk up a slightest slope. He was asked to rest and wait for arrangements of open heart surgery, which they did not foresee as being in the near future.
Taking things into their own hands, En Arafat sought a second opinion with a Cardiologist at PAH, hoping they would be able to schedule a surgery as soon as possible, even if they had to borrow from friends and family to afford it.
“As the sole breadwinner of my family, I have to provide for my family. An open heart surgery at PAH is about RM50,000 to RM60,000. There is no way

I can afford that.” said En. Arafat. “God must have been on my side when the cardiologist advised us to apply for medical welfare. The Patient Heart Fund supported me with RM50,000 (76% of the total cost) and my open-heart surgery was scheduled just 2 days after my application submission.
“Imagine, when everyone was on Hari Raya break, their Charity Team took upon themselves to expedite my applications, knowing how life threatening my case was. My application was approved in just 2 days! To date, we are still in awe of the speed and compassion the Charity Team and the Penang Adventist Hospital Charity Fund Committee showed in my case. They understood our predicament. They understood how critical my case was and, most of all, they did not discriminate between faith and religion when it comes to medical charity cases. They reached out to us at our most difficult time.
“We are very happy that we were able to celebrate Hari Raya with our family & friends post-surgery. That means a lot to us.”
We were happy to see that, two months post-surgery, En Arafat was able to resume work. A year after this major heart surgery, En Arafaat is thankful for second lease of life.
Puan Baidah, aged 68 and a widow, loves to socialize. She lives a simple life, one can often find her chatting up a storm with the stall operators in the market she frequents, or with her friends **. This simple life is fulfilling enough for her.
She was not unaware of her medical history with heart conditions. In 2019, she underwent an angioplasty with one stent, and since then she’d been on her guard. But it still shocked her out of her skin when, two years later, she choked and condition worsened to a point where she had to be rushed to the hospital. As it was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the general hospital was overrun with cases of Covid, and the delay would inevitably bleed over into other cases. Puan Baidah was then rushed to the nearest emergency center, the PAH ER. There, she was diagnosed with 7 blocks, each ranging from 70-90%. Open heart surgery was inevitable.
Finances were the most prominent obstacle. Her granddaughter, who was to be married, had applied for a loan for her wedding, but decided her grandmother’s surgery took priority. Out of concern that she could collapse at any time, Puan Baidah was housebound for several days as she waited for responses to her charity applications. Those few days stretched into an entire lifetime for her.
PAH Charity Fund had approved RM50,000 for her surgery, 60% of the total cost. Within a week, she underwent open heart surgery. Post-surgery, Puan Baidah had returned to bubbly self, meeting friends and enjoying the outdoors. She has since picked up a new hobby, gardening.
“There is always grace and mercy that come out of things that could have been life-shattering,” she said. “The fact that I can help give people knowledge and empower them to make better life choices is amazing.”

As we live from day to day, it’s essential to keep our chin up, and go about the day positively. This is the first step to improving one’s life, and for patients, a single positive thought can turn their life around. Indeed, this was the case for Mr. Goh Cheng Hock, a 64 year old who suffered from colon cancer.
When Mr. Goh first noticed the blood in his stool, he knew it was time to get himself to a hospital. His first thoughts after his diagnosis were bleak, thinking he was doomed for his remaining life to be soaked in suffering. He thought “people live and people die, so will I”. Things only got worse when the procedure suggested by the government hospital was not successful. So, Mr. Goh sought a second opinion from Penang Adventist Hospital.
As a retiree, there was no way for him to bear the surgery costs alone. He applied for charity assistance, and was granted RM25,000, which amounted to 48.5% of the total bill.
Now, despite still being on medication, Mr. Goh had found the rainbow after his storm. “I am still here and have gained strength because of the prayers from everyone”. He is now even able to perform light exercises and enjoy his leisure time with his family and friends, compared to before when he just slept and rested as life was empty.

In one’s youth, they have dreams they wish to accomplish and achievements they wish to unlock, Miss Hafizah is no different. She spent all 34 years of her life surrounded by her family and best friend, chasing her dreams and fulfilling them one at a time.
However, the cracks began to spread when she began to have harsh stomach aches and her menstrual cycle became more and more irregular. It all came crashing down when she was diagnosed with stage 4 endometrial cancer. The rollercoaster of her life plunged further downwards when the doctor diagnosed that the cancer had spread to her left lung and brain.
Her pillar of strength is her family, but as they live in Kuala Lumpur, she practically faces the world alone, drenched in sorrow. Fortunately, she has a very good friend who considers her family near her, to fill her with positivity in these trying times.
Miss Hafizha hasn’t stopped counting her blessings, she has her single mother, family and a friend who constantly support her emotionally, financially, and more. She also extends her heartfelt gratitude to the Charity Department of Penang Adventist Hospital, who made it possible for her to undergo the majority of her treatment here.
PAH Cancer Fund disbursed RM50,000 to assist Miss Hafizha, hoping she remains in high spirits. Today, she is still fighting cancer, but says: “anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you and bring you up”. A happy and supporting family is the greatest gift and blessing God has given us.

Having a persistent leg pain for the past few months brought Mr Letchumanan for consultation in one of the hospital in Alor Star. However, disappointed with the service and clueless for his next course of action, Mr. Letchumanan bear the pain.
Learning of Mr. Letchumanan’s pain and suffering, his neighbour, Mr. Sabapathy took upon himself, brought by his neighbour to Penang Adventist Hospital and consulted Dr. Murli. Mr. Lechumanan was diagnosed with severe varicose vein with venous ulcer and endolaser vein surgery was proposed.
Mr Letchumanan turned down that proposal immediately as he was unable to work at the moment while his loving wife is only earning about RM600 per month.
Worried for his health and how his wife will have to preserver through to support both of them, Mr Letchumanan applied for medical charity. A total of RM23,000 or 97% of surgery cost was disbursed for him to undergo Endolaser vein surgery on 19th April 2022.
Post-surgery, Mr Letchumanan will have to undergo wound dressing once a week. Learning of this, Mr. Letchumanan’s neighbor, Mr. Sabapathy took upon himself to drive Mr. Letchumanan to and from Alor Setar for wound dressing weekly. It has been more than 6 months of wound dressing now, and both good friends are still faithful with the routine. Their reward, is some delicious Penang food at the Little India.

On December 7th 2021, Mr. and Mrs. Tan became parents for the first time. Baby Cynthia entered their lives, and the second they saw her sweet smile and felt the warmth of her body, they fell in love. They slid into their new roles eagerly, and for a second, it seemed as though nothing could go wrong.
But after only a month, baby Cynthia fell sick. To watch their baby coughing and wheezing endlessly, brought pain to Mr. and Mrs. Tan. Due to the shortage of beds in GH, they had to bring her to PAH. There, Cynthia was diagnosed with acute bronchiolitis, where her airways were inflamed and blocked, making breathing extremely difficult. She would need to be hospitalized to relieve her of the fever and phlegm. Her parents were aware of how much this would cost them, but they didn’t want to take a single risk and neglect Cynthia’s needs. They managed to pull together enough money to pay for Cynthia’s week of treatment and monitoring.
Cynthia’s parents applied for PAH’s medical welfare. A total of RM11,000 - amounting to 95% of the total billwas disbursed to the family. For a low income family who could barely support a family of three, this medical assistance came to their rescue.
The decision to raise a child goes hand in hand with unconditional love and a lifetime of responsibility. There is nothing greater than the love a parent has for their child. Whether or not the child is healthy, the parents’ love remains. Baby Cynthia may develop asthma down the road, however, we can be sure that Mr. and Mrs. Tan will continue to embrace, nurture, and care for her, and she will always be the apple of their eye.
The capping ceremony was often the highlight of a nursing student’s experience, a memorable and happy occasion for the students as they donned the cap and pledged to wear it with pride and dignity and in such a manner that it would always bring honour and distinction to their alma mater.

Adventist College has been very blessed to have good partnership of various foundation and individuals to sponsor deserving nursing students. Kuok Foundations has been our generous sponsor for nursing students of diploma course since 2011. Over the years, the foundation had sponsored RM 3 Million for 120 deserving students.
“My heartfelt appreciation for the assistance provides by the Kuok Foundation for needy individuals who become our students. Thank you for helping us prepare the nurses of the future. Since 2012 the Kuok Foundation has supported 120 students who would otherwise not have a chance to get an education with a job assured. I hope that someday, the beneficiaries of the Kuok Scholarships will feel that they have paid back for the enormous gift they received. Your continued partnering with Penang Adventist Hospital allows the college to help shape the lives, and the characters of many students, who become amazing nurses and wonderful people. “

World Health Day is an important occasion that is celebrated around the world annually. The day is dedicated to promoting awareness about health issues and encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle choices. Hospital, as the primary healthcare providers, play a critical role in promoting well-being of their
patients and communities.
Penang Adventist Hospital organized a campaign for the internal staff where they have a chance to understand about their body and talked to the nutritionist. A total of 120 staff turned up for the event.
World Breastfeeding Week is a global event that takes place in August yearly. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and the need to support and help mothers breastfeed successfully. To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, Penang Adventist
Hospital organised “Step Up for Breastfeeding, Education & Support”. The event included a range of activities such as educational booths and workshop. The event was graced by YB Chong Eng. The event also saw the launch of Wholistic Approach Wellness (WAW) Juniors.
To celebrate World Heart Day, Penang Adventist Hospital organized “Dance for Heart” at Straits Quay to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and promote heart-healthy activities. Over 500 participants joined us for the initiative. We thanked our guest of honour, YB Dr. Hajah Norlela for
gracing the event and encouraged the community to take care of their heart health.
The theme for World Diabetes Day in 2022 was “Education to Protect Tommorrow”. Community Health Department organized various activities to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact on people’s lives. We thank our guests of honour YB Chris Lee Chun Kit ADUN of Pulau Tikus and YB Syerleena Abdul Rashid ADUN
of Seri Delima for attending the event and supporting the cause for diabetes care awareness.
The Chaplaincy programs (pastoral care) at Penang Adventist Hospital are key services in total patient care. Total patient care provides for an individual’s spiritual as well as physical and mental needs.
When lives are in the balance and uncertainty overcomes a person, a kind word, gentle touch, whispered prayer or an empathic presence can sooth a soul and bring efficacy to the healing process.
During such moments, chaplains offer critically needed spiritual and emotional support; ministering to patients, their families and medical staff with unconditional love, sacrifice and service. Due to the patients’ diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, chaplains can help to connect patients with their own spiritual beliefs.
