TMJ A to Z
Initial Management Strategies, Approaches and End-Stage Disease This symposium is designed to guide the practitioner from the initial presentation of temporomandibular joint internal derangement and myofascial disease through primary treatment strategies and second-line treatment options. Speakers will utilize evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and decisionmaking algorithms to review these commonly encountered conditions of the temporomandibular joint. Clinical pearls and practice-ready approaches will be presented from experts in the field. The morning topics will focus on initial evaluation techniques with an emphasis on differential diagnoses and “red flags which may indicate when further testing is indicated and when other conditions should be considered. Advanced imaging techniques as well as their utilization and limitations will be explored. Non-surgical treatments will be examined including the appropriate use of occlusal guards, physical therapy and medication strategies. The afternoon lectures will focus on second-line therapies for recalcitrant and end-stage disease, with an emphasis on officebased interventions including trigger point injections and arthrocentesis. Finally, open surgical indications will be considered and an update on the most recent advance in alloplastic joint replacement will be discussed. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES >U pon completion of this symposium, the participant will be able to identify criteria used to diagnosis TMJ osteoarthritis, internal derangement and myofascial pain disorder as well as develop a differential when other conditions should be considered >U nderstand the rationale for evidence-based treatment plans for patients with TMJ OA/ID and myofascial pain. >R eview and become familiarized with second line office-based therapies for myofascial pain and osteoarthritis for the TMJ >R ecognize when appropriate end-stage open surgical interventions are indicated

Division of Neuroradiology, University of Pennsylvania Health System After completing her residency at University of Michigan, where she served as chief resident, Dr. Loevner pursued a two-year fellowship in neuroradiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1995, she joined the radiology department at Penn, where she currently divides her time between clinical care and teaching/research. Her clinical passion and expertise lie in skull base and head and neck imaging. The scope of her responsibilities encompasses all aspects of diagnostic imaging in neuroradiology, as well as interventional procedures. One of the most unusual procedures she performs is the minimally invasive CT-guided deep skull base biopsy: Under imaging guidance, she advances small-gauge needles through the face into the skull base and the back of the head. Loevner’s research focuses on molecular MR imaging to evaluate squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. She began to focus on head and neck cancer research after receiving an RSNA Scholar Grant. Currently, Loevner is evaluating the use of diffusion and perfusion MR imaging for predicting treatment response in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. She is working with graduate students and specialized clinicians to understand the molecular basis of the responses, so that future therapies can be tailored to each patient. She also participates in thyroid cancer research, and has published on quality control and clinical outcomes using a multidisciplinary framework that includes specialized radiologists and clinical specialists.
