Summertime is Playtime As a child, summer meant year-end vacations with endless weeks of free time. Remember how you couldn’t wait to grow up? Luckily, we live where others vacation, so in this issue we decided to pretend we were on vacation too! We’re all about summer playtime. From life’s simplest moments just floating in a pool, to playing in a custom built treehouse, no matter what your age, get outside and play! Vero Beach and the surrounding area truly has so much to offer! Be adventurous. Take a wild ride on the west side: hop aboard Gator Bait Airboat Adventures! Riding in an airboat is such a great way to see Florida in its natural state. Indian River County has beautiful stick marshes, wetlands and is home to Blue Cypress Lake – simply breathtaking. Spotting a big alligator might also take your breath away! Do you dream of riding horses on the beach? Yes, please. {This is one of my absolute favorite things to do here!} Beach Tours on Horseback offers daily rides on Hutchinson Island. Make sure you put this at the top of your summer bucket list! For generations, many Vero residents have also called the Abacos home. Our summer interns, Reilly and Jess, were quite at ease “pretending” to depart for the Bahamas in our photo shoots. Whether by boat or plane, read all about the fun things to do if you decide to make the crossing! Summertime also means sea turtle nesting season. Please remember to turn all lights out from March until October so that our hatchling turtles find their way to the ocean. Our mother sea turtles will continue to nest through October as well. If you happen to take a walk at night on the beach, please only use red lens flashlights so as not to disturb our sea life. Every one of us can make a difference! The options for summer fun are limitless. Explore your own backyard and see what new things you can find to do here. I’ll be out exploring new places to go paddleboarding and maybe, just maybe, this will be the summer I learn to paddle surf!

He’s a dreamer, a wanderer, but he is far from lost. He continues to seek new adventures in new places. He finds peace in quiet spaces and captures these rare moments through the lens of his camera. He never imagined that in such a short time, his images would reach people all over the country. He is honored and humbled that people love his pictures of life. Joe’s mantra is to always remember that life is about the journey, not the destination. InfiniteCaptures.com, @semkow116

Each summer, Portfolio hosts a team of interns. Little did I know, the young ladies that requested to work with me this summer would be smart and beautiful! We decided to let them dive right in, receiving on-the-job experience from modeling, to styling and writing. We believe in following our passions and we couldn’t think of a better way to get them involved in the publishing industry than to let them experience it first-hand! Our cover was shot at the causeway park in Fort Pierce on Seaway Drive. These adorable floats are courtesy of Sunnylife. Our watermelon model is Reilly Koontz and our pineapple model is Jessica Bass. We loved playing and photographing them this issue! The girls were always up for an adventure!

ABACOS

Many local families travel to the Bahamas in July and August. It’s a local tradition that spans generations. Getting there is half the fun! Private boats travel to the West End where they meet up with friends staying on various islands in the Abacos. Another transportation option is by plane. New on the Vero scene is Treasure Coast Seaplanes. They offer exhilarating seaplane air tours and advanced seaplane training. Future operations will include charter services throughout the Southeast and Bahamas. Put the adventure back into flying aboard their Cessna 206 amphibious aircraft. There’s ample room for up to five passengers and suitable for all ages. Experience the Treasure Coast as it was meant to be seen…by land, sea, and air. Working Together Toward a Greater Good Volunteers are essential to sea turtle conservation.

T

he month of July marks the middle of sea turtle nesting season in Indian River County and the busiest month of the year for anyone who works on a sea turtle nesting beach. Loggerheads and Green Turtles are still laying eggs and will continue to lay multiple nests until October. Additionally, nests that were laid at the beginning of the season, which began March 1, have begun to hatch and must be evaluated. Thanks to the Indian River County Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP), all county beaches have a uniform sea turtle monitoring protocol. Every day, county coastal staff, EAI consulting staff, Disney conservation staff, and volunteers load up ATVs with nest marking supplies and data sheets, roll onto the beach and begin recording details about every turtle crawl made the night before. You might see these individuals working on the beaches up to 8 hours a day, covered in sand, sweat, and saltwater. Together, we are working toward a greater good: to protect sea turtles so their populations can return to a sustainable level. The endless hours put forth by the volunteers of the Indian River Sea Turtle Program deserve an applause. Many of these individuals are retired and many have full-time jobs

with only one day available to donate per week. Without these volunteers, the program would not be possible. As the sea turtle program coordinator, I want to thank everyone who works tirelessly on our beaches to collect valuable data about long-term nesting trends. I’m especially grateful to the volunteers, past and present, who have donated their time to this project to make it as successful as it is today. Chasing Surf

Photos provided by Guy Takayama Surf Style

Local surfer, Austin Hollingshead, is making a coastal career of surfing.

W

e sat down with local surfer, Austin Hollingshead, age 17, for a little Q&A about surfing as a career. Many dream of becoming a surfing legend, but only the very best get to do it every day. Professional surfers travel the globe in search of the perfect wave. The ocean seems to call to those chosen to follow this path. Just like any professional athlete, they must stay focused and train hard. It also takes dedication and determination. The best part: traveling the world doing what you love! Q: Why surfing? A: My dad surfed. When I was 10, I decided to go with him. I caught my first wave and the rest is history. Q: When did you realize you wanted to do it professionally? A: After surfing my first contest (the Easter Surf Fest 2011). I knew right then! Q: How often do you surf? A: Every day! Q: How long are your surf sessions? A: Usually three to six hours, it all depends on the swell. Q: How often do you travel? A: Let’s just say I am on the road more than I am home! Q: No, really? A: At least three weeks a month. Q: That’s a lot of traveling. Is it hard to be away that much? A: Yes. Very hard. But that is what it takes (for me anyway). Q: Who do you usually travel with? A: My girlfriend, Kaydi Archer. She’s a charger! We both love to surf competitively. Q: Do you have a signature move? A: CJ Nelson told me I have one of the best drop knee turns out there! Q: Where have you been surfing? A: Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, and of course, up and down both coasts of the United States. Q: What is your favorite break? A: Snickers in Panama, it’s an awesome right-hander!

Q: What was your last trip? A: I just got home from doing the East Coast Tour with Harley Ingleby, CJ Nelson, and Guy Takayama. We chased surf from Florida to New Hampshire. Q: What was your first big win? A: The National Kidney Foundation Pro Longboard in 2015. Q: Next? A: Jerry Allen’s Pro contest put on by the Wrightsville Beach Longboard Association in North Carolina. Q: Where do you see the sport going? A: I ride for Carve Sports. They are building the highest performance and most durable boards on the market. We will be able to surf bigger and faster waves as technology just gets better. As the boards get faster, we will be able to paddle into waves that were once uncatchable. Q: How long do you see yourself doing this? A: AS LONG AS I CAN!!! Q: Where are you headed next? A: I’m headed to El Salvador and California, then back home before this article is even published. [smiling] Austin Hollingshead is a local surfer who is sponsored by Carve Sports, Longboard House, Paddleboard House, Vissla, Sun Bum, D’Blanc Sunglasses, FCS, Barry Bags, Surfer’s for Autism, Salt Pack, Salty Bones and Lokahi. He also volunteers his time for Surfer’s for Autism. He loves working with the kids and thinks he gets more out of it than they do. He also went to Guatamala in January to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity.

A Long, Hot Summer of Fishing

S

ummer is in its long stretch and the heat is here for a couple more months. Fish in the early morning or late afternoon for best results. Inshore, look for deeper water and shady areas along docks. Offshore, seek out mats of seaweed, floating debris, and diving birds. The snook are still spawning at the inlets. You’ll find tarpon and jacks, along with kingfish on the beaches close to shore. Offshore, there’s plenty of kingfish and Mahi-Mahi. Bonita schools will tug the line and put up a good fight, as always. Night fishing is very good this time of year, just follow the light. The good news is that the fall mullet run is not too far away. This is Capt. Christian Yergens wishing you tight lines and safe boating. Be sure to dispose of your trash and monofilament line responsibly; and please practice catch and release. For many species, this is the spawning season, so be careful.

A History of Surfing in Florida, an exhibit from the Palm Beach County Surfing History Project, is now at the Elliott Museum through July 31, 2016. Through historic photographs, surfboards and memorabilia you will learn about how surfing took hold as a sport in seven different regions of Florida. Double Trouble

Vero Beach High School’s “The Ericks” take Championship.

T

his spring, one of Vero Beach High School’s finest men’s doubles tennis teams played their last match. Led by Erik Olliges and Eric Zwemer, the team’s depth of talent vaulted Vero into the elite 4A division of the Florida State High School Championships for the past three years. Competing teams come from Miami, Wesley Chapel, Orlando, Weston, and Boca Raton, all hotbeds of competitive tennis. Every year, Vero is David to the 4A’s Goliath, literally and figuratively overshadowed by higher ranked and taller opponents “The Ericks,” as they are called by teammates, played with nothing to lose. Their path to become a great doubles team began 10 years ago. Both come from tennis families and are coached by their fathers. Good doubles teams don’t always need to talk, they just act as one. Better doubles teams usually chat before and after each point. Sometimes “The Ericks” will simply tell a few jokes or pretend to talk strategy just to stay relaxed. “Team Erick” has one lefty (Olliges) and one right-hander (Zwemer). And forget about any weakness through the middle, for the lefty’s backhand is 36

ferocious. In easier matches, they can descend into a very entertaining Harlem Globetrotter-ish mixture of trick shots and comedy. It’s pure fun to watch. The championships in Orlando called for a more serious approach. “The Ericks” were all business. The first point was hard-won, but Vero scored the first blow. Each game included many back-and-forth deuce points, critical points full of tension that reveal confidence and resolve. While some matches ended quickly, Vero played above expectations to a 6-4 first set win. Teammates, competitors, and other spectators took notice and wondered if “The Ericks” could maintain their momentum. The opponents fought back with a 4-0 lead in the second set. It would be easy to have doubts, second thoughts, or lose confidence. Instead, Vero won a few games to regain momentum, despite losing the second set, 2-6. At this point, the spectators, teammates, coaches, and parents were emotionally exhausted. Hours passed. Sportswriter Heywood Broun famously said, “Sports do not build character, they reveal it.” After an eternity, “Team Erick” won 16-14 in the tiebreaker and together showed “the fierce devotion to succeed competitively.” After graduation, Eric Zwemer will attend Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. Homeopathic First Aid for Children and Families

W

hether preparing for a summer vacation or shopping for school supplies, a first-aid kit is essential for active families. For those who prefer natural medicine, a homeopathic first aid kit can help offer relief from life’s minor ailments and injuries. Homeopathic medicine was proven and systematized by a German medical doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, MD, in the late 1700’s. One of homeopathy’s greatest benefits is that it is safe for use with infants and children. Kids love taking the remedies - the pellets taste sweet and melt easily under the tongue. They can also be dissolved in water and given orally with an eye-dropper to babies. Below are a few first aid tools for at-home use. Arnica - Arnica is the premier remedy for muscular strain, bumps or bruises from blunt trauma. It’s a necessity for every home. It is useful for falls, goose-eggs, bruises, sore muscles, broken bones and the like. Give immediately for best results. Apis - This is a remedy for anything shiny, red, swollen, and hot. Think bee stings, sunburns, sore throats, or pink-eye. It is not for severe allergic reactions to stings, although it can be given as emergency medical attention is being sought. Calendula - Use this topically for cuts, scrapes, blisters and minor burns. It helps tissue granulation, fights infection, and speeds wound healing. Ointment form is best as it provides a protective barrier for skin. Hypericum - Good for injuries to areas rich in nerve endings. Fingers or toes stubbed or slammed in car doors, tailbone falls, or toothaches, for example. Ledum - Best for black-eyes, bruises, and puncture wounds from insects or foreign objects - injuries needing this remedy feel better from application of cold.

Ruta - Good for strains and sprains to tendons and ligaments. A must for those who play sports, exercise, hike, bike, etc. Use in conjunction with proper medical care. Homeopathic remedies can be found at local health food stores. It’s best to compile a kit so remedies are available for immediate at-home use and for travel. Look for 30c potency, usually the highest strength for purchase over-the-counter. Less is more in homeopathy. Give a few pellets 3-5 times daily until symptoms improve, then stop the medicine. Watch for signs of infection or worsening, and seek medical attention if necessary. Obtain proper medical care in emergency situations and don’t rely on homeopathy alone. In such cases, parents can implement first-aid care with homeopathy while on their way to a doctor. Meet George Hart

The Big Heart Behind Mulligan’s.

G

eorge Hart, owner of Mulligan’s Beach House Bar and Grill, is the kind of self-made, humble, successful person we all strive to be. After 17 years at various chain restaurants including AppleBee’s, and Hooters, Hart felt that it was time to make a change. The restaurant business is his passion, so in 1996, he bought a pizza parlor for $20,000 and shortly thereafter, brought the t-shirt shop next door. He tore down the adjoining wall to combine the two shops, and the very first Mulligan’s was born. He’s now the proud owner of six Mulligan’s restaurants and recently partnered with JPB Enterprises to open 25 more locations in Florida during the next five to eight years. Though Hart is known for his loud personality and excellent management skills, what makes him truly extraordinary is the way in which he gives back to each and every community he is involved in. He wholeheartedly believes that “If the community is behind me, I want to be behind them.” In Indian River County, he contributes to Halloween festivities, Easter egg hunts, 12 Weeks of Summer, Skim Jam, and most notably, the Fourth of July fireworks at Memorial Island. Every year, people throughout the community gather for this event. Hart says the fireworks show is a great tool to bring people together, and promote local business. “It’s one of the only times where thousands of people gather together and they’re all quiet. When does that ever happen?” Hart adds with a chuckle. Prior to opening Mulligan’s 13 years ago, Hart was warned that the restaurant wouldn’t fare well during Vero’s slow summers. Despite the feedback, he knew the location couldn’t be beat. He plans on retiring to Vero Beach in a few short years and increasing his charitable donations. “Five more years of business, then I want to shift to being a philanthropist,” Hart says. Hart’s son, Austin, now 22, works in the business too. He’s hoping his daughter, Gracie, 12, also will join in the family business one day.

After all, Hart’s philosophy is “Great food, good service, a clean restaurant, and always remaining charitable within the community.” Mission accomplished. Summertime is Pineapple Time

Get fresh, delicious, and local pineapple all summer long!

I

t’s summertime—break out the tropical drinks and fruit salads. Fresh pineapple is the perfect summertime snack to help you beat the heat. Support your local farmer and get fresh, delicious pineapple all summer long! In the 1900’s, Indian River County was known for its pineapple. The fruit was grown on Vero Beach’s ridge off Old Dixie near the railroad tracks until the freeze of 1930. After the freeze, farmers then turned to citrus crops because it was more lucrative. Indian River County has one of the last remaining pineapple plantations in Florida. Travel north on U.S. 1 past Rock City and before Hale Groves to find Nature Farms, one of Indian River County’s best-kept secrets. Pioneer citrus farmer, Mark Dellerman, has 25 years of experience in the citrus industry running his family’s 900-acre citrus groves. He supplemented his knowledge with additional educational courses at UF-IFAS, and by communicating with pineapple growers in Hawaii and Costa Rica. After clearing his citrus groves from saltwater intrusion a few years ago, Mark began planting naturally grown produce and pineapples. The pineapple grew so well that he began planting more crops and offered them to chefs at local restaurants and private clubs. Mark found that with the right soil combination and harvesting after the pineapple breaks color, he was able to produce some of the best and sweetest tasting fruit in the world! His customers rave that they compare to none. Experience one of these jewels at Nature Farms’ roadside stand on Saturdays during the summer, or pick them up at Countryside Citrus on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach. Pineapple season runs late June through early September. For more information about Nature Farms, Inc., and their delicious, naturally grown pineapple, find them on Facebook or visit them this summer at 9160 N. U.S. 1 in Wabasso. Dare to compare! 40

The Crab Stop

A must for seafood lovers.

W

hen The Crab Stop first opened nearly two years ago in their colorful location in historic Vero Beach, the owners were determined to create a restaurant that would not only serve the most delicious and fresh seafood, but that they would also serve the community by providing welcoming place to gather and celebrate special occasions and everyday life. Based on the outstanding reviews from online travel and social media sites, it’s obvious that the owners have succeeded in their efforts. Today, The Crab Stop enjoys a steady stream of regulars, mixed with hungry travelers who have heard the rave reviews about the restaurant’s Maryland style, garlic and steamed crabs. Don’t forget about the shrimp, fish, conch, scallops, crawfish, lobster, corn fritters, hush puppies, sausage, corn and an array of homemade side dishes and desserts that have earned The Crab Stop a well-earned reputation as a “don’t miss” seafood joint. Part of the restaurant’s charm is its laid-back décor and homey atmosphere, which immediately helps people relax and settle in for their meal. The Crab Stop allows diners to choose from individual menu items or what they call “Table Combos.” The combos are impressive feasts that involve a large quantity and variety of fresh seafood offerings with delicious side dishes. The combos are crowd favorites that don’t disappoint. Eating at The Crab Stop is a culinary event. Listen to the happy chatter of the diners

Lather & Co.

Lather creators & luxury makers

Lather & Company Creating nourishing beauty.

T

he story of Lather & Company is only just beginning, but has been in the works for many years. As lovers of all things natural, decadent and visually pleasing, making handcrafted soaps and body care has been a natural progression of our lives. As friends and roommates for more than a decade, our house was always filled with little jars of handmade love on every shelf. Gifting gave way to our friends and family placing orders for their friends and family, and eventually Lather & Company was born! Relatively new on the scene, we joined our professional forces last year and it has been a true labor of love. Our focus is small-batch production of handcrafted soaps, body scrubs and moisture-rich body frostings. We use only the highest quality natural and organic ingredients, incorporating natural clays, exfoliants and botanicals derived from the earth to make our beautifully unique products. Our mission is to create delicious “skin food” that will not only delight your senses, but will also leave you clean and silky smooth. We are currently working full-time jobs and put every other waking hour into Lather & Company. We have big goals and are insanely passionate (and slightly obsessed) with trying new recipes and sharing new ideas. It’s a creative process and the end result is a tangible product that gives way to the ultimate in pampering. The response from the community has been amazing. We love getting positive feedback— this joy and encouragement is the driving force behind all that we do. We are beyond blessed and super excited about the direction our lives are taking and look forward to many years of creating nourishing beauty that people love!

Step Into the Global Classroom

An international education is more accessible than ever before.

A

world-class degree can cost less than your monthly electricity bill and open doors you never knew existed. While there has been much talk about borders and globalization, one of the greatest benefits of the process is widely unknown in this country. There’s a quiet revolution occurring in higher education that will fundamentally change the way we study, and could unlock opportunities for you and your children. To understand what the globalization of higher education means, think of the possibility of studying anywhere. I discovered it myself while working and studying in Spain, France, and China. It was the best decision of my life, and I’m here to tell you that it’s possible for everyone. My second year abroad, I completed a master’s degree in economics at the Sorbonne in Paris for around $5,500, and I learned French. That’s a fraction of American university costs. This isn’t an exception. While tuition at U.S. universities is racing upwards (college costs are up 500 percent from 1985), costs in other places remain affordable. In France, tuition ranges from $170 to $790 a semester, while in Germany there are no tuition fees. You could study at Technical University of Munich, one of the highest ranked in the world, for less than $120 a semester. Chances are, you can find a program in English, too. As of 2013, there were 6,407 programs in Europe taught fully or partially in English. Saving money isn’t the only benefit. International experience is a priority for many companies. They’re looking for individuals who can bridge borders and adapt to new contexts - assets gained from time spent abroad. One aspect of this is proficiency in foreign languages. English is the de facto international language of business, but knowledge of a foreign language still adds a lot to your resume. Few Americans take advantage of these opportunities. While foreign students study abroad in record numbers, only 10 percent of American

46

July-August 2016

undergraduate students do. Of those, only 3 percent enroll in long-term programs. It shows, too. Just 18 percent of Americans speak a language other than English, compared to 53 percent of Europeans. This makes us less competitive in a global economy. It’s important to realize the unprecedented opportunities available. When considering your options, don’t limit yourself. Think global. Hurricane Season Has Begun

Are you REALLY prepared?

I

f you lived in Indian River County during the storms of 2004, chances are you’re now fully prepared for hurricane season. Fortunately, you probably haven’t had to use your hurricane protection since installation. The not-so-good-news is that if you haven’t used your hurricane protection in recent years, and haven’t given them a second thought since they were first installed, you might not be as prepared as you think. Basic shutter maintenance is critical so that they are ready when needed. When you’re trying to beat a storm you certainly don’t want to find out something won’t fit. For instance, a house may settle and the tracks for the shutters no longer match up for an easy, perfect fit. Or, lawn equipment might have bumped into a track and bent it. To help prevent unwanted problems, Florida Shutters offers these helpful tips: • Clean all shutters with soapy water and rinse well with fresh water (especially if you live near the ocean with its salty sea air). • All screws in the Colonial and Bahama shutters should be lubricated and installed only finger tight (if they’re too tight, they may not unscrew easily). • After cleaning, accordion shutters should have the wheels and locks lubed with a spray lubricant. • Reinstall any screws where you might have removable tracks for storm panels to keep dust, dirt and insects out.

• Run rolling shutters up and down several times after cleaning to align the slats and heat up the motors. Hurricane season has begun, so take a moment to check your hurricane protection to ensure it’s ready when you need it. Florida Shutters has offered hurricane protection since 1979 and manufactures its own hurricane protection products at its factory and showroom at 1055 Commerce Ave., Vero Beach. For more helpful tips, call 772-569-2200, or visit FloridaShuttersInc.com.

The “King of Tile” Builds an Empire Abbate Creative Tile and Marble, remains the sole importer of porcelain tile and the largest importer of stone in the area.

O

nce nicknamed “The King of Tile” by locals, Vincent Abbate continues to have a large presence in the tile industry in Indian River County. His company, Abbate Creative Tile and Marble, remains the sole importer of porcelain tile and the largest importer of stone in the area. It’s a boutique style store in Vero Beach that stocks tile and stone slabs of granite, marble and quartzite. Abbate Creative Tile and Marble was originally founded by Abbate in 1988 as Creative Tile. At that time, the showroom was a very cramped 1,000 square foot building. Abbate was not only selling the tile to his customers, but he was installing it too. As the company grew, he continued to see the high demand for quality tile at affordable prices. He knew the only way to fill the demand was by importing the products directly from the manufacturers, but that meant expanding his business. In the early 1990’s Abbate began exploring the ideas he had to grow the small company. While he was planning the expansion, he started traveling abroad to Italy to make connections in the tile manufacturing business. He met with factory owners and immediately established a good rapport. He soon found the building where the showroom is currently located and began a complete renovation that included a large addition to warehouse the impending inventory. Before long, container after container began arriving at the port of Miami and the warehouse in Vero Beach was full of beautiful Italian tile. Over the years, the company has continued to grow. In 2003, Abbate Creative Tile and Marble began importing stone slabs and opened a 48

fabrication facility. This enabled the company to offer its clients floor, wall, and decorative tile and countertop material all under one roof. Now, it is a one stop shopping experience that makes the coordination of projects much easier for homeowners and contractors to manage. Summer Fashion Fun

I

am blessed to work with many brilliant glass artists who create delightful sea creatures, which you will often see in my work. Summer fashion in Florida is very interesting for a jewelry designer. Having started my career in the Pacific Northwest, it’s a thrill to work with these intense and vibrant colors of the tropics. In the summer of 2008, I expanded my store, A Bead Above. We introduced what I think is the perfect summer accessory. The first ones sold were of brilliant aqua blue Apatite gemstone with a bright white cultured pearl. This design was a part of the jewelry collection showcasing the exceptional art glass of the late Shannon Hill (1969-2009). Now, this necklace is available in virtually every color of the gemstone rainbow, with your choice of chocolate, white or a peacock colored cultured pearl. It’s perfect with a pretty summer dress, or white t-shirt and blue jeans; it can be dressed up or worn casually. Wear it as a choker, or extended to an 18-inch necklace, perfect with a crisp white collared blouse. I’ve designed this necklace to be convertible, and it is also lovely worn as a bracelet. Layer this ageless design with other strands of pearls and chains. Fans of this necklace include classically tailored women, who wear pearl or diamond earrings and a www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Good for those with very fair skin tones. The warmth prevents you from looking washed out.

We love this soft golden blonde on all skin tones.

Good for most skin tones because of its neutral undertones, but we especially love it with olive and tan skin.

Good for those with pale skin. Avoid these tones with darker skin, as it can wash you out.

We like to add a little ombre to this amazing multitoneblonde. Brightening the ends gives a fresh effect.

This blonde requires a little bravery, but the icy base and bright highlights will be sure to turn heads!

We love this look with green or brown eyes, but you could rock it with any eye color.

Wedded Bliss Starts with Isabella’s Bridal

A

casual stroll in downtown Vero Beach will indefinitely lead to a peek inside Isabella’s Bridal. Its beautifully decorated window display provides enchanting views of designer wedding gowns through floor-to-ceiling windows. Located in the historic Pocahontas Building, Isabella’s taps into Vero’s ever-growing wedding market. With selections from the industry’s top designers, Isabella’s offers bridal gowns by Wtoo and Willowby by Watters, the Astrid & Mercedes line by Lea-Ann Belter, and Australian designers Sarah Janks and Karen Willis Holmes. Brides will also find all of the accoutrements needed to accompany these white and ivory creations, including jewelry, veils and hair accessories by Sara Gabriel Veils and Jaclyn Jordan NYC. You can also find beautiful garters by La Gartier. A native of Brookfield, CT, owner Melissa Patrick has made Vero Beach her home for the last 20 years. “I am so glad to be a part of downtown Vero Beach and the ‘Shop small, shop local’ atmosphere that is being revitalized here.” Patrick’s expanding services, including Isabella’s Event Planning & Specialty Rentals, has also found a home in this historic downtown building right next door to the bridal boutique. From farm tables and birch wood cross back chairs, to whiskey barrels and crackled window panes, the rental shop offers whatever look brides desire. Patrick and her team of specialists have been planning weddings and events on the Treasure Coast since 2008 and they know the amount of detail that goes into making a wedding unique and special. Starting at the very beginning, they handle every detail. The team believes in creating an event that is personal and represents who the bride and groom are.

ESCAPE TO THE

ABACOS

life

well traveled

J

ust a quick plane ride or a smooth crossing away, the Bahamas have been a destination for Vero Beach residents for decades, especially the Abacos. With the popularity of this getaway, it’s not uncommon to run into an old friend or neighbor. The Carter, Koontz, McGuire and Bass families are but a few that you’re sure to see there. For more than 60 years, the Carter family has called the Abacos their home away from home. After island hopping from Treasure Cay to Bimini, the Carter family now spends most of their time on Green Turtle Cay, just 210 miles from Vero Beach. From scuba diving remarkable reefs, to dancing the night away at local bars, Green Turtle attracts many people every year. The Koontz clan are frequent visitors to Green Turtle Cay, as well. Kim and AJ Koontz have traveled to the Abacos since the early 1980s when they visited Treasure Cay with their college friends. After getting married, they returned to the Bahamas with their children. They bounced around from Hope Town to Little Harbor for a few years before residing at their favorite island, Green Turtle Cay. Even today, the tradition is still alive and thriving for both families. The Carter and Koontz children plan on keeping the family tradition alive for generations to come. On Sundays, you’ll find them at Nippers Beach Bar & Grill on Guana Cay. For more than 19 years, people from all over the world have traveled to Nippers. Amidst the mosh pit of people, familiar faces such as the Bass, Fennell, McGuire and Butz families are likely to be seen, especially during the hot summer months of July and early August. While many head north to Green Turtle after a long day at Nippers, others head south to Hopetown on Elbow Cay. Chris McGuire has been visiting this little island virtually her entire life. Her first trip was on her parent’s sailboat when she was only 6 months old. Her parents have owned land on the neighboring Island of Tilloo since the late 1950s and on Hopetown for nearly 30 years. Being such an integral part of McGuire’s childhood, it is no surprise that she and her husband Scott brought their first child, Cameron, to Hopetown at only four months of age. The family of five built a home on Chris’s family’s land in Hopetown. Very fittingly, it is named, “Legacy.” Scott and Chris McGuire introduced the Bass family to Hopetown. The Bass family’s Bahamas tradition started more than 35 years ago when Jeff would travel to Walker’s with his college buddies. Once he married, Hopetown became a tradition for his family. Since 1995, the Bass family has traveled to Hopetown to enjoy the incredible diving, nights out at the Abaco Inn, and frequent visits to Vernon’s Grocery Store and Bakery. The countless memories they’ve shared and the lifelong friends they’ve made are truly unforgettable. Written in collaboration by Jessica Bass and Reilly Koontz. Photos submitted by all families.

Franke Goes to Hollywood

SoCal Summer Hot Spots

G

reetings Eastsiders! It’s time to raise your fun factor and enjoy this sweet summer. Here in Southern California, being indoors is so last season and there’s definitely no shortage of exciting outdoor activities to choose from, whether you’re hitting the beach, hiking, or dining rooftop. Spend an evening under the stars with friends or family enjoying screenings of your favorite classics and new releases at the Montalbán or Hollywood Forever Cemetery. For all my oyster-shucking foodies, there are now 18 restaurants from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach running $1 oyster specials all summer long. I highly recommend taking advantage of the happy hours and getting your shuck on at The Ace Hotel, Herringbone, Bar10, The Rockefeller, The Hungry Cat, and Cliff ’s Edge. Are you dedicated to working on your summer body? The time has come to show off all your hard work at an epic pool party. UCLA graduate Tyler McLean created the perfect Vegas alternative right here in Palm Springs called the Splash House. Imagine a Vegas pool party without the pretentious bottle service, but all the music and atmosphere of South by Southwest. Visit SplashHouse.com for tickets and information. Naturally, fireworks are one of the first things that come to mind when I think of summer, and L.A. has an all-star weekend lined up for the 58

holiday. The Hollywood Bowl Overlook has fantastic views of the downtown skyline all the way to Catalina. Steve Martin’s music will fill the canyon as you watch the fireworks July 2-4. For all those looking for peace by the sea, Marina Del Rey and Long Beach are two other hot spots to spend the 4th, because there’s nothing quite like watching fireworks over the ocean. If you’re feeling like the Sam Hunt song, “Single for the Summer,” add L.A.’s Museum of Broken Relationships to your list of places to see. The MOBR grew from a traveling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships and their artifacts. It originated in Croatia in 2006 and just opened its L.A. location to the public. No summer is complete without a tasty treat! Salt & Straw Ice Cream just created Dill Pickle Sorbet (yes, pickle lovers, this is reality). Visit SaltandStraw. com for L.A. scoop shop locations. I hope you all have a fabulous summer, and remember: don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

well captured

In Broad Daylight This June, I had the privilege of photographing a nesting sea turtle here in Vero Beach. I had never witnessed a crawl, and it has been on my to-do list for quite some time. I thought you had to go out at night to find the turtles making their trek ashore, so it was a very special treat to get the chance to photograph this spectacle during the day. I had enough time to watch the turtle finish laying its eggs, bury them, and then head back to the sea. After ducking under a large enough wave to start swimming, I never saw her again. She escaped the small crowd, leaving her young behind to figure out life for themselves. It was an extraordinary experience and I feel pretty lucky to have been there. I’m glad she picked Vero Beach. She must have known that this community cares so much. Remember this summer to keep your lights out on the beach, walk with caution, keep pets away from the dunes, and give these nesting sea turtles their space.

Bahamian Potcakes

The perfect recipe for a rescue.

O

riginally, the term “Potcake” referred to the Bahamian term for leftover food that remained at the bottom of the traditional Bahamian dish peas ‘n rice. Locals fed the potcake to stray dogs that freely populated the Islands. Today, however, Potcake is used to describe the indigenous dogs found throughout the Bahamian islands, and has become a recognized breed known as the Royal Bahamian Potcake. Officially considered to be mixed breed dogs, Potcakes have very distinct characteristics and strongly resemble each other. Most Potcakes have smooth, short fur, cocked ears, and long terrier-shaped faces. Life for a Potcake can be terrifying, roaming the islands alone with no home and no one to love them. The amount of unowned dogs in the Bahamas is alarming, but thanks to compassionate rescue groups, volunteers and adopters who dedicate their time and adoration to these loving dogs, many are living a healthier and happier life. With so many Vero Beach residents spending summers in the Bahamas, many Potcakes are calling our little beach town home, too.

A few years ago, the Koontz family had the privilege of rescuing and bringing home a little Potcake found in the Abacos. Their four-legged friend, now named Kai, was living in a box, all alone with no family, no food, and nowhere to go. He was soaking wet and shaking from the storm that had just passed, and too weak to run when approached. At only 4 weeks old, he was living a heartbreaking life and was lucky to still be alive. Thankfully, the Koontz family rescued him and brought him home so this pitiful little puppy could have a new life in Vero Beach, filled with limitless love and affection. The Koontz family has spent summers in the Abacos for many generations. Reilly Koontz is a senior at the University of North Florida, majoring in public relations with a minor in professional education. She is a native of Vero Beach, and loves spending her time outdoors. This summer, she’s interning at Portfolio, taking online college classes, and traveling with her family to the Bahamas. Article and photos by Reilly Koontz

Surviving the Dog Days of Summer

Photos by Jessica Bass

I

s Fido water savvy enough to survive a fall in the pool? Does Fifi enjoy jumping through the surf? Not all dogs like to dive in. Dogs have personalities and unique preferences, just as people do. Even dogs of a breed known to have an affinity for getting wet can express disdain and discomfort when near the pool, river or ocean. If you live near the water, as many of us do, how do you keep your pet safe and trauma free? The truth is, not all dogs are naturally designed to swim. While most will automatically begin to ‘dog paddle’ once they find themselves in water, many breeds are physically at a disadvantage when it comes to water safety. Others have the physical ability to swim but might panic, creating distress for you and her. Dogs with a calm, even temperament may be taught to swim, but that requires a lot of patience on your part and great trust on the part of your dog. If your dog shies away from rain, just steer clear of the wet stuff for your sake and his. Breeds that typically enjoy swimming have webbing between their toes and have been bred to excel in the water. Often they are working dogs and include the Chesapeake Bay Retriever; Cocker Spaniel; English Setter; Golden Retriever; Irish Setter; Irish Water Spaniel; Labrador Retriever; Newfoundland; Portuguese Water Dog; Spanish Water Dog; Standard Poodle; and Vizsla. These breeds may enjoy water activities, so be creative and have fun! With long legs and long snouts, these dogs are built for endurance, in and out of the water, and thrive on exercise. On the other end of the spectrum, dogs with heavy barrels and short legs have difficulty keeping their heads above water. Short nosed breeds that have difficulty breathing might be frightened if they take in water. If you own one of the following breeds, be extra careful if your home has a pool or your dog accompanies you on your boat or to the beach: Bassett Hound; Bull Terrier; Chow Chow; Corgi; Dachsund; English Bull Dog; French Bull Dog; Pekingese; Pug; and Shih Tzu. They may prefer to enjoy the waterfront view but not the water. Regardless of your dog’s affinity for water, let him approach it as he is comfortable. Do not force him into it, and be aware of the water’s currents and drop offs. Be mindful of Fido’s age, as pups and senior dogs may tire easily in the water. Consider a safety vest for smaller dogs and always have a rescue device nearby. For respite, keep plenty of fresh water on hand, as well as food and any medicine he or she might need. Lastly, make sure your dog has access to shade or shelter to cool off from the heat.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe.

TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.

beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day.

RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your

LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life

in the stars

The astrological news for July and August looks pretty sweet for all Zodiac signs. This is a welcome change after the bumpy ride we’ve all been on for the last few months. Make sure you set your new intentions on the new moon of July 4. July 19 brings a full moon, where your shadow side might be exposed. August is a great time for a vacation, so enjoy your summer! ARIES: Look to the time around July 4-6 to make changes with regard to your home, perhaps redoing your nest, or making a move. July will have you running all over the place, but you will be happy. Everything about August has to do with adventure and travel, or at least being open to new experiences. The trickiest time is around August 24. Something is catching you off guard, so just be prepared. Make sure all communication channels are open. TAURUS: For a change, you won’t have much to worry about in July. There are a host of planets giving you much needed comfort and pleasure. The full moon on July 18 will powerfully support all your business matters. As we move into August, you continue to feel as if the world is in alignment with your goals. If you need to say goodbye to a friend who has not treated you well, think about letting them go around August 6. Don’t hang out with anyone who undermines you. GEMINI: Talk about a great month for recreation and romance! July practically bursts will potential for fun. Work issues may show up around July 21-24 but just express yourself as clearly as possible and you will sail through any difficulties. During August, you may need to spend time with people who need you. This could be an elderly person, or a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. August 24 is a time to trust your gut. Pay attention to how people make you feel, and listen less to what they say. CANCER: For a change, you might actually be able to relax and take some time off in July. Make sure you realize that taking time for fun is just as important as time for work. Uneasy aspects occur around July 13-14, so if someone comes after you with a complaint, just realize they are out of line and you need to refuse being manipulated. August continues to be quite delightful. It’s not until August 30 that Mercury will turn retrograde, try to travel before then. LEO: July has some highs and lows. You have a parade of planets ensuring good times, but around July 7 and 13, you might run into some difficult situations with either friends or family. Put your foot down if you need to be clear that you are in charge. August has you in overdrive. Forget about sitting around the house! You are in the fast lane, both with work and fun. August 13 might be problematic when it comes to finding time for you. A full moon on August 18 may have you deciding you don’t want to hang out with certain people. VIRGO: You tend to be the caretaker, but especially around July 7 you will realize that you need to put yourself first. Your job is to stop allowing people to take advantage of your good nature. The full moon on July 18 brings relationship issues to the forefront. Remember that the basis of any good relationship is friendship. The theme of people potentially taking advantage of you continues into August, especially August 7-14. If you’ve had your eye on something you want to buy, go for it at the end of August.

74

July-August 2016

LIBRA: Fabulous opportunities abound for you to shine your bright light around July 11. Whether it is in the romance department or during your working days, it would be hard to not notice your radiant energy. July is a month of wonderful spontaneous fun. During August, you may find that you have to take care of an elderly friend or relative. Do it with a smile on your face and know you are making a big difference in their life. SCORPIO: You won’t be lonely in July! It seems everyone wants to be around you. Just make sure no one puts you on a leash. There is a bit of tension in your work life around August 13-14 that could have you feeling drained. But overall, the entire month of August has you out and about and very much on many people’s radar screen. Just smile a lot and be open to all new introductions, whether it is a new person or a new pathway opening up for you. SAGITTARIUS: In early July, you will be more of a hermit than usual. However, once you hit July 12, you are back to being your normally outgoing self. Your ruling planet, Jupiter, has a wonderful month designed to keep you happy. Money and love seem to be doing well. In August, if you want to take a vacation, try to go the first week of the month. Some higher-ups in your life might be giving you a hard time at the end of August. Just handle everything with your usual good nature, and any gnarly issues will disappear. CAPRICORN: If you have been wanting to paint your bedroom, or put on a new roof, the month of July would be the perfect time to do any and all home repairs. If single, look to the new moon on July 4 to possibly bring someone into your life. The full moon on July 18 will let you know if this relationship has a chance. There is a testy aspect for you on July 29. Try to think before you speak. August is a busy month with lots of work opportunities. AQUARIUS: July is a nice and peaceful month, which is much appreciated after the roller coaster ride of the last few months. Keep alert around July 20 when someone might approach you with a business idea. This might be the very thing you have been looking for. Fortunately, the month of August continues to be pleasant. You have worked hard and juggled a lot of balls for quite some time. Make sure you take your vacation before August 30 when Mercury goes retrograde. PISCES: July is a lovely month for all fish! There are several planets in water signs, making it easy for you to express your feelings, and feel heard. Whether you are single or partnered up, expect lots of loving. The end of July might have you worried about a loved one, but just know this won’t last long. During August, you might be feeling as if you are working too hard, so take time off, but do take advantage of an interesting work opportunity around August 16 and 27.
