“I don’t want life to imitate art. I want life to be art.” ~ERNST FISCHER We love art! As we begin our new season, the art scene is thriving. Artistic expression is popping up on walls and murals throughout Indian River County, but this is nothing new. Our cover shot, “Night Train,” was commissioned by the City of Fort Pierce in 1995 by artist, Blue Sky. Lately, if you look around you’ll see new murals popping up everywhere. In this issue, we’ve included a few of the local artists who have created some of the latest installments—read all about Christopher Sweeney, an original “street artist” who uses spray paint to create his work. Artists Barry Shapiro and Deanna Derosia hand paint every little detail with a brush. And Vero is hoping to create its first ever “Art Village” downtown. This is exciting news! While the weather is cooler, take a trip down to Miami and visit Wynwood Walls. Art Basel’s theme this year is “Fear Less.” There will be 12 new walls showcased during Miami Art Week. Plan to spend the day strolling the neighborhood so you can check out all the great street art and make sure you grab a bite to eat at one of the local eateries, too! You won’t be disappointed. From Sebastian to Fort Pierce, be sure to visit all the local galleries and exhibits planned for this season. Don’t forget, the first Friday of every month is the Gallery Stroll in the Vero Beach Downtown Art District.
Wishing you all a very artsy and wonderful holiday season,

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
T
~Pablo Picasso here’s never been a better time for artists in Vero Beach than right now. We’re fortunate to live in a town that boasts one of the country’s longest running
art clubs, the nation’s largest art museum created from private funds, dozens of downtown studio and gallery
spaces, First Friday art strolls, its own film festival, Opera Guild, and the creation of the Vero Beach Cultural Arts Village. There’s a flourishing, creative energy evidenced by the growing number of distinctive and beautiful wall murals painted throughout downtown Vero. These murals are reminiscent of those that have come to define Miami’s ultra-funky and completely revived Wynwood district, which for years was a crime-ridden no-man’s land of empty warehouses. These days, Wynwood, and its iconic Wynwood Walls (a wall mural garden of stellar urban street art) is one of the best reasons to visit Miami. What was once an area to avoid is now a thriving neighborhood of galleries, boutique businesses, cafes with live music, top notch pizzerias, hip eateries, breweries, hot real estate, and art, art, art! If you haven’t taken a trip to explore it, please do. Here’s a hot tip: a round trip Tri-Rail train ride from West Palm Beach to Miami costs $12 (park at the WPB train station for free). A great time to visit is during Art Basel Miami Beach (December 7-10), North America’s premiere art show with hundreds of the world’s leading galleries participating in exhibits around the city. People fly to Miami from all over the planet to attend this event (which also happens in Hong Kong and Basel, Switzerland – where it originated), so how lucky are we that Art Basel is just a short drive and a $12 train ride away? One of the world’s greatest art destinations is practically in our backyard. Yet another reason why it’s a great time to be an artist in Vero Beach. As history has shown us from Wynwood to Brooklyn to L.A’.s Silver Lake, when artists adopt a neighborhood, property values rise, crime rates drop and the surrounding area benefits in a variety of ways. Vero’s artistic renaissance has been building for years and the future here looks brighter than ever.

Jay Kramer, approached Barry about creating a mural funded by Mr. Smokes’ owner Michael Williams. Barry divided the wall into four sections, inviting three area artists— Kristin Meeks, Greg Ingerson and Tony Guttierez—to participate. Each artist contributed design ideas, but Barry adds, “Once we started painting, things got difficult. There were differences of opinion and the project grew to be more complicated than expected. Thank goodness that young helpers Rachel Akers, Gracie Susan and Elijah McKenzie rolled up their sleeves to paint every weekend – or we’d still be there working on it.” The community’s reaction to the mural is glowing. “We wanted to make a mural that was distinctively Vero,” Barry adds. “I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be cool if the rays of the sun spelled out Vero?’ We even painted the concrete curb bumpers in the parking lot with sherbet colors to match the mural.” Murals are an excellent opportunity to not only make a dull wall more

Exploring the Wynwood Walls, Miami’s Magical Murals Written by XAQUE GRUBER Photography by ARIC ATTAS, EMILY CLINTON, AND JAY MONSALVO

S
omething exciting is happening in Vero Beach—right before our very eyes. A trail of wall murals spanning a four-mile distance is spreading like wildflowers from A1A to the Downtown Arts District. We’ve counted 11 significant murals so
far, with half of them painted in the past year alone, transforming nondescript concrete
slabs and enlivening the city. Vero Beach is blessed with countless artists and one thing is for certain: we can expect more brilliant, thought provoking and colorful murals in the years to come. So where did this mural boom originate? A short trip south to Miami’s Wynwood Walls district can help us understand the positive, powerful effect public art can have on a community. The birth of the modern graffiti movement dates back to the 1960s when a Philadelphia high school student named Cornbread tagged buildings with spray paint to get the attention of a girl. The tagging evolved and an art form emerged. By the late 1980s, artists like Keith Haring and Basquiat took their graffiti art style into high-end Manhattan galleries.
Cut to Miami’s Wynwood district, once a crime-ridden ghost town of old warehouses. It’s now a hot spot of commerce, cuisine, character, charm and culture— all thanks to wall murals. Wynwood’s transformation began in the mid-1980s when Helene Pancoast and Faith Atlas, two artists driven out of Coconut Grove by high rents, formed a non-profit and purchased the Flowers Baking Company building in Wynwood to create an artist space. In 1987, the 2.2-acre facility opened as Florida’s largest working artist’s space called The Bakehouse, which still operates at that same location today. Fast forward to the mid 2000s when the Wynwood art scene got a big lift from Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties (who invigorated SoHo and South Beach). Goldman had a knack for seeing thriving, artsy neighborhoods when others could only see urban plight. Goldman took an interest in the area and began buying up chunks of Wynwood’s warehouse district in 2006. In 2009, Goldman dreamed up an open-air garden of murals called Wynwood Walls, which opened to coincide with Art Basel. Goldman’s vision was that the entire Wynwood neighborhood would become a canvas for urban street art. If you haven’t attended a Wynwod Art Walk on the second Saturday of every month or visited any of the great establishments in Wynwood, now is certainly the time. Wynwood is not the only sunshine state urban hub transformed by wall murals. Fort Lauderdale’s Fat Village (an acronym for Flagler Arts and Technology Village) has become a playground for talented street artists and art lovers, a far cry from the forgotten no-man’s land of empty warehouses and auto repair shops it once was. This year, December 7-10, Miami’s Art Basel promises many new surprises and art events with hundreds of galleries worldwide participating. Visit ArtBasel.com for more information.

Colorful Pieces Combined for Brilliance
I
f Florida was named for its many colorful flowers, Vero Beach might be known for its countless brilliant creatives. For all of the art that is celebrated here, there are still several more unsung artists that continually come out of the woodwork, or in this case, glasswork. Paul Pickel was born into an illustrious art family. His father, Conrad Pickel, opened Pickel Studios in Wisconsin in 1947. Tired of the northern weather, Conrad opened a branch studio in Vero Beach in 1954 to diversify. A designer and builder of houses, Conrad was no stranger to beauty and composition. With a penchant for challenge and affinity for growth, he closed his studio in Vero Beach in the late 1960s and moved to Pompano Beach, before opening a gallery in Boynton Beach at the onset of the 70s. Conrad’s son Paul joined the Wisconsin studio operation in the late 60s as the owner and manager. Like his father, Paul craved change and ultimately made the decision to move to the sunshine state. He closed the Wisconsin shop and revived production in Vero Beach in 1975 as the main studio brandishing the Pickel name. For decades now, the Conrad Pickel Studio has been creating stained glass, mosaic, and sculpture masterpieces for religious and secular sectors alike. Commissioned for countless public art projects throughout North America, the Pickel Studio has created a trusted and revered name, thanks to the tireless and meticulous work of a committed team of skilled artisans inside modest studio walls. The distinguished works of skilled hands from an unassuming building along Route 60 in our quaint beach town have found their way far and wide throughout the northern continent. From stained glass windows in churches in Miami to mosaics in cemeteries of Phoenix, Arizona, bronze sculptures in Huntington Beach, California and niches in Shoreline, Washington, the Pickel Studio is acclaimed for both form and function in its artwork. They specialize in custom creations of stained glass windows, both traditional and modern, as well as the dedicated art of the restoration of stained glass that has weathered the years. In addition to timeless stained-glass creations (which constitutes about 65 percent of their work), Pickel Studio is world renowned for its kaleidoscope Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
murals made of Venetian glass mosaics. Portfolio Magazine observed the fastidious process in which the modest pieces of chromatic Venetian glass, rich in color and of exceptional quality, came to life when placed in precious definitive pattern. Some might argue the outcome must be divinely inspired, but even the technique itself seems nothing less than ethereal. “Mosaics are an ancient form of art,” Paul explains. “One of the first art forms was putting stones together. There is a certain richness about it that is intriguing–putting small pieces together to create something truly exquisite.” Artisans carefully place the delicate tiles in organized design, creating larger pieces affixed to a paper backing. These bigger portions are then designated with numbers. The artists follow a small sketch of the artwork that has been divided into a grid with corresponding numbers. The smaller pictures provide a visual guideline for the artist, similar to constructing a puzzle by looking at the overall picture on the box. The artists working with the vibrant tiles place the numbered pieces upside down in special “mud” inside a pedestal, leveling each segment along the way and wiping away excess adhesive with great precision and speed before it sets. Water is carefully applied to help remove the numbered paper backing; once that is peeled away, only the tiles remain, transposed correctly in elegant prescribed schematic, as the art is meant to be viewed. From humble beginnings of mud and glass fragments with often careless jagged edges emerges a finished piece of brilliant beauty. The pedestals are to be admired as art all their own. Richard Coulter, owner of Coulter Designs and artisan extraordinaire, is committed to innovative concrete concepts. Known for his custom countertops, furniture, flooring, and wall décor, Rich has been called on for everything from the meticulous and minimalistic installation to the complex decorative design in concrete. Pickel Studios asked Rich to collaborate with them on a unique project for St. Anastasia Catholic Church in St. Augustine, one that would certainly require his creative vision and artistic integrity. He was commissioned to craft the two four-leaf clover-shaped pedestals that house the delicate mosaics, and he did just that with his signature elegance and precision. The St. Monica and St. Augustine pieces Portfolio Magazine witnessed taking shape will comprise the center portion of a columbarium room at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Rich created the perfect pedestals and Pickel Studios enhanced them with intricate glass. The mosaics will serve as centerpieces for guests visiting the church’s sacred columbaria. When asked what he enjoys the most about his job, Paul didn’t hesitate. “I really enjoy working with our clients. It is a pleasure to see a project come to fruition and working with the people who have the vision is always rewarding.” Conrad Pickel Studio, Inc. is located at 7777 20th Street in Vero Beach. A BEACH
A Record-Setting
Turtle Season
O
n September 10, the eastern eyewall of Hurricane Irma passed approximately 100 miles west of Indian River County with maximum sustained winds of approximately 40 MPH and gusts of up to 62 MPH, producing 10-15 foot breaking waves along the coast. Along most of the beaches, erosion was consistent and classified as moderate dune erosion and beach profile lowering. However, in some areas dune recession greater than 10 feet was observed. Based on the observed county-wide coastal erosion and anticipated natural shoreline recovery, the total economic impact to Indian River County managed beaches is estimated at $4,353,000. Sand isn’t the only thing we lost from our beaches. Sea turtle nesting season runs March through October and the 2017 season has been one for the books. Prior to Irma, a record number of Green Turtle nests and a record number of total nests had been documented along the county’s beaches. Thankfully, the storm came closer to the end of the nesting season so at least 70 percent of these nests had already hatched. However, 70 percent of the nests still incubating (accounting for approximately 1,000 nests) were washed out or damaged from erosion and storm surge. The good news is that Green Turtles are resilient and have laid more than 70 new nests since the storm, continuing to add to this year’s amazing record. The county’s habitat conservation plan and its associated programs help provide a healthy and safe beach for turtles to reproduce. With continued efforts, sea turtles will continue to return to Indian River County beaches for decades to come.

WELL FISHED
Making the Most of Cooler Weather Fishing
W
ell folks, we come out relatively unscathed as a very tropical season comes to an end. We wrap up the mullet run, which for the most part was kind of a letdown because of the rough weather. The temperatures will begin to fall and give our local fish a much-needed break after a long, hot summer. The lagoon waters will begin to clear up after a deluge of rain. The best fishing times will be early morning and late afternoon for the most feeding activity. There’s snook, trout, redfish, and still some tarpon to be had until temperatures get below 70 degrees. Beach fishing will start to taper off as the temperatures fall, but the pompano bite will pick up on a daily basis.

Eight Pepperberries: Celebrating Life’s Beautiful Moments
M
y love affair with paper began many years ago and could very well be ingrained in my DNA. I swoon over notepads, sticky notes, pretty cards, you name it—paper is my jam. As a teen, I started making printable cards (for any and all occasions) on a random card-making computer program. Looking back, they weren’t aesthetically pleasing, printed and folded on plain computer paper, but my great grandfather adored them. He always looked forward to receiving one for special occasions, which I happily obliged. Life has a way of taking you down a winding road. When I realized the career path I had chosen wasn’t for me, it was the memory of his encouragement and enthusiasm for my cards that gave me the courage to pursue a new dream. I had been molded into a new person who had a burning desire to create and build something of her own. From this spark, Eight Pepperberries was born and each piece I make has a little bit of me, my passion for loving life’s small moments, and my sweet great grandfather’s memory. It’s my hope that each and every Photo by Seahorse Lane Boutique design brings joy. Life is meant to be celebrated - to pop champagne on a random weeknight just for the fun of it. We have the power to brighten someone’s day by sending a quick note of encouragement or gratitude; to get motivated by tacking up an inspirational quote. The routine of daily life can at times feel dull, the simple act of choosing to write your grocery list on pretty paper can add a little sparkle. Life doesn’t need to be perfect for us to see the beauty within it. Honoring all of life’s moments is what Eight Pepperberries is founded upon. I hope to inspire you to celebrate every day; to help you make life simple, beautiful, yours. Each of us has a story to tell and I am passionate about empowering people to love themselves, their unique journey and the beautiful life they live. Learn more at EightPepperberries.com.

L
ife. Fitness. Balance. These words are Lori Long’s mantra. After years of working at various clubs and fitness facilities, Lori decided to open Grow Strong Fitness. Believe it or not, Lori is beyond 60. She is a mother, grandmother, personal trainer and lifestyle educator. Originating from Long Island, New York, where she spent most of her free time outdoors, she loves boating, fishing, gardening, biking and surfing. Her family’s health and wellness is her first priority. Unfortunately, many of Lori’s family members were diagnosed with various forms of cancer, as well as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. “This hit me hard and I became passionate about trying to understand the ‘how and why.’ This quest became the foundation that fueled my passion for my career,” Lori explains. “I found that lifestyle played a huge roll in overall health. It wasn’t just about the environment, but what people ate, their exercise habits, job and family-related stresses. These factors are largely in our control and have an impact to our longevity and quality of life.” So, more than 31 years ago, Lori packed up the winter coats for good and relocated her family to Vero Beach so she could spend more time with them outdoors, surrounded with plenty of fresh air and Florida sunshine. They started growing a garden as a year-round hobby. Growing their own fruits and vegetables made good sense. Society is always juggling schedules, eating on the run, and it’s frustrating to find time for the proper physical fitness goals, too. As we age, weight loss can become difficult, if not impossible. Investing in a lifestyle educator, like Lori, can help you make changes to your daily life

Brussels Sprouts - If your childhood memory of this veggie is a boiled-until-soggy horror, it’s time to give brussels another chance. Roasted, sautéed, or shaved raw into a salad, they pack a nutritional punch. They’re high in Vitamin K which helps blood clotting and are a good source of Vitamin A, C, folate and iron. Brussels contain chemicals known as isothiocyanates, which promote the elimination of potential carcinogens from the body. Harvest season is September through March.
s d o o f r e p Su
Parsnips - These root veggies resemble carrots with a lighter color and sweeter, almost nutty flavor. Roast them along with carrots, turnips or brussels sprouts for a healthy accompaniment to a Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas roast. Parsnips are high in fiber, antioxidants and B vitamins and are best October through April.
H
oliday dinners are often people’s most cherished meals. This year, try expanding the menu by introducing a healthy dish among the indulgences. Incorporating nutrient-dense foods that are in season is a great way to ensure you’re reaping the benefits of nature’s bounty. Below are some superfoods that will be a welcome addition to your holiday table.
Apples & Pears - Keep the peel and ditch the pies and pastries! As a dessert, try sprinkling apples or pears with cinnamon and baking or poaching for a sweet treat. For a fall appetizer, slice them into salads or pair with gouda, gorgonzola, pecans or walnuts. These fruits are high in fiber and have a low glycemic index. Apples are in season August to November and pears are ripe August to February.
Pumpkin - Consider using pumpkin in a savory dish if you made the obligatory pie for Thanksgiving. Add pumpkin to risotto, a curried soup or ravioli to make this superfood the star instead of dessert. Pumpkin is rich in carotenoids, which give it the orange color. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that converts to Vitamin A and can benefit vision. Pumpkin is also rich in fiber and potassium. One cup of cooked pumpkin has more potassium than a banana. Roasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy snack and can help lower LDL to improve cholesterol. Pumpkin also contains tryptophan, which is necessary for serotonin production, our feel-good neurotransmitter. Pumpkin is harvested October through February.
Pomegranates - Best known as an antioxidant powerhouse, pomegranate juice is great alone, in smoothies or used as a base for marinades or salad dressings. The seeds provide a burst of color and flavor that wow a holiday salad. Pomegranate juice has three times the antioxidants of red wine or green tea. This fruit contains anti-inflammatory compounds, which may help arthritis and joint pain. Pomegranate may also benefit breast and prostate cancer by slowing cancer cell reproduction. Peak harvest is August through December.
Cauliflower - Recipes abound for mashed cauliflower and cauliflower rice—preparations of this veggie that are healthier substitutes for mashed potatoes or white rice. Cauliflower is delicious roasted with olive oil and can even be used to make a pizza crust. Cauliflower is high in Vitamin C, choline and folate. It also contains high levels of sulforaphane, a compound that has been shown in lab studies to suppress cancer growth, especially of colon and prostate cancers. Moreover, sulforaphane has a positive effect on blood pressure and reduces risk of diabetes. Cauliflower is in season September through June.

Still Serving in the Midst of Crisis Written and Photographed by DOY DEMSICK
W
hen we joined the Armed Forces, we did it for a purpose: to serve our country. Our nation was under attack by violent extremism. We could not sit idly by and watch. The men and women who served in the era of Iraq and Afghanistan were and still are an all-volunteer force. We represent the percentage of our generation willing to take action. Now, years later, many of us live here in Indian River County, but the willingness to take action, the inclination toward service, lives on. When we arrived here, whether returning home or searching for a new one, we were met by the Veterans Council of Indian River County and the 24 veteran organizations who made up the council. This network of veterans had been taking care of our brothers and sisters in arms since before 1987 when the council was formalized. They provided transportation to and from medical appointments, financial assistance, outreach events, ceremonies, memorials, resource connection and much more throughout the entire county. However, the younger generation of veterans, now organized into Vero Beach Veterans: Next Generation, noticed something. It was all for 56

the veterans by the veterans. We knew it was a vital effort, but we wanted something slightly different. We wanted to help not just veterans, but our larger community. We wanted to continue serving the American people, the very reason we signed up. We began looking for opportunities, volunteering with clean-ups, local events, etc. We tried to get our name out as a volunteer community, with limited success. Then, Hur-
ricane Irma hit and a few of ours served in the county’s Emergency Operations Center, informing the center of our capabilities and motivation. The weeks after the hurricane were a blur for us, as the United Way and others put us to work taking out fallen trees, placing tarps on roofs and cleaning up countless properties. Our community witnessed our generation again stepping up to serve in the midst of crisis, and as the calls continue to come in, we will press on. Still serving. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Through the Lens with
Vero Photographer Aric Attas
W
hen Aric Attas first picked up a camera at age 12 in his hometown of West Hartford, Connecticut, he was hooked on photography for life. Attas has lived and worked in Vero Beach since 2003 and is known nationwide for his stunning photographs. His work reflects his fascination with the cosmos and his studies of Kabbalah, an ancient mystical form of Judaism. Attas’ latest series, “A Glimpse of Infinity,” resemble a view through a telescope into celestial space. His meditative new work draws us deep into a hypnotic, mysterious world of blues, violets and metallics. “I was inspired by Kandinsky’s paintings of circles as well as the Jewish prayer of Shema, which is only six words long. It is the oldest and most sacred of all Jewish prayers. In Judaism, there are many names for God invoking both the infinite and the personal.” ARIC ATTAS Ten of Attas’ latest photographs are being shown at Clare Gallery in Hartford through the end of 2017. And lucky for us, he will be showing “A Glimpse of Infinity” in April 2018 at Raw Space Gallery, 1795 Old Dixie Hwy., Vero Beach. Attas also enjoys teaching photography at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. He has shot many jobs as a freelance commercial photographer specializing in architectural, product and food photography. His fine art photography has been exhibited and published internationally. Visit PhotonLab.com for more information.

Doing Good and Providing Hope
O
ne year ago, Lt. Jonathan Needham and his wife Heather were called to lead our local Salvation Army. They left Fort Myers and arrived in Vero Beach to serve more than 29,000 people each year. As a Christian-based organization, the mission of the Salvation Army is to “Do the most good.” “The Vero Beach community is very close knit,” Jonathan says. “People are so willing to give and volunteer.” From providing toys to needy children during Christmas, to feeding the hungry, the Salvation Army has been a stronghold in Vero. Every Monday and Friday, they send their mobile feeding unit, also known as the canteen, to provide meals for people in Gifford. Normally, people come to the mobile unit to receive food, but their dedicated volunteers also hand deliver food to those who can’t get out of their house. They also deliver hot meals to assisted living facilities. The Salvation Army also assists in times of disaster. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, they opened their kitchen all week to provide food and water to those in need. They also fed people in Fellsmere each night for a week after the storm. And, after learning that the Hibiscus Children’s Center was without power, they delivered 30 hot meals to the families there each day until the power was restored. During the holidays, bell ringers stand next to the red kettles where people can drop in coins to make donations to feed the needy. This tradition began in 1891 by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco who wanted to provide a free Christmas dinner to the area’s poor. Through their Christmas Angel Tree program, the Salvation Army coordinates a huge toy drive where people can provide needy children with toys. The trees are located at both the Vero Beach and Sebastian Wal-Mart stores. The Indian River Mall also provides a storefront where individuals can drop off toys for children. More good things are developing at the Salvation Army. “A challenge we see here in the community involves generational poverty,” Jonathan explains. “We are looking to break that cycle with a new program next year called Pathway of Hope.” Indeed, this wonderful organization has provided hope to many families for more than a century and is a true pillar in our community.

SPORTING
LIFE
Rugby is for the boys…
AND GIRLS! A
ccording to Jacques DeBruyn, rugby is the greatest sport on Earth. Wait…on Earth? Hang on a minute. When it comes to sports in America, it’s pretty simple. NFL. MLB. NBA. Hands down, those are the Big Three. However, if you venture outside of the good ol’ USA you’ll learn there are millions of fans crazy for something entirely different: rugby. The sport itself dates back to the 1830s where it originated in England. Its popularity spread to countries throughout the world. Find a rugby fan and watch their face light up as they describe the game. They’ll tell you it’s fast, physically aggressive. It requires an insane amount of mental toughness. It evokes a culture of respect. Bottom line: people love it. In 2011, a handful of experienced players—DeBruyn included—decided to bring their love of rugby to the place they call home, and the Indian River Rugby Club was born. At first, recruitment was tricky. It’s a physically demanding sport combined with a steep learning curve. Bill Cluck, president and head coach, admits some of those early matches were played with a less than full squad. However, year after year, the club steadily built a competitive core of players. Today, there are an estimated 55 active players. This is not just some club for the boys. IRRC fields both a men’s and a women’s team. Their mission is to promote and grow the sport, regardless of gender, age or ability. A quick rundown of the roster finds a mix of college students, pilots, engineers, realtors and retired military, just to name a few. What Cluck and the crew have managed to create goes deeper than the typical recreational level. The getting-in-shape aspect, normally the benefit of playing a sport, pales in comparison to the comradery. After serving eight years in the Army, Dave Talbot said that outside of wearing a uniform, this was the closest brotherhood he’d experienced. “We’re not just a club team, we’re a family. I wish I found the sport a decade ago.” Learn more about the Indian River Rugby Club at IndianRiver.wixsite.com/RugbyClub.

F IGHTING T HE S TIGMA OF A DDICTION AND

PROVIDING HOPE
his time of year always brings bittersweet memories. It was this time of year when I dropped my husband off at rehab, destroying my dreams of a life-long happy marriage. Little did I know, it would turn out to be one of the best days of my life. As I left, I was amazed and frankly quite shocked by the kind, encouraging words from the director. He spoke about the family recovery process and the problem of addiction not only affecting the addict, but also family members. Up until then, my only problem was my husband’s substance abuse. He caused all of my hurt and destroyed our family, not me. Little did I know, the director was right. Even though I wasn’t an addict, addiction had destroyed my life. For the next five years, I grew through my own recovery process. I learned how co-dependent I was and how my co-dependency allowed me to build an impenetrable wall of protection, never allowing anyone in. I discovered that my resentment had built up against my husband, and addiction was killing me and making me become an unpleasant person. I also learned that although addiction runs in families, so does recovery. I had a choice to make: Was I going to let addiction kill me, or was I going to fight, not only for my family’s recovery, but for the many hurt individuals and families to come? I chose to fight! I went back to graduate school to finish my master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and did an additional three years in addiction studies. My husband and I, along with our two beautiful daughters, moved back to Vero Beach, my hometown. Vero is the place where generations of my

family were born and raised, the place where addiction tried to steal, kill and destroy my life, and the place that mended my broken heart. Vero is my community and its beaches are healing. Ironically, on my birthday, eight years after dropping my husband off at rehab, my journey came full circle when I interviewed at a new treatment center on the beaches where I spent my childhood. I discovered Beachside Rehab, a private drug and alcohol treatment center with the vision of providing a discreet, serene and therapeutic approach to treating addiction. I found my home, the place the past decade of my life prepared me for. I’ve been the clinical director at Beachside for almost four years now. Today, I have the honor of being the director who can give kind, encouraging words to clients and their families in hopes that they, too, can overcome the pain and hurt that addiction brings. There is hope and recovery is possible. Visit Beachside for yourself and discover how we are fighting the stigma of addiction and providing hope for our community. WELL LOVED

Capturing Life’s Beautiful Moments I
magine sitting around the fireplace with your grandchildren discussing your wedding. Now, imagine opening an heirloom album and showing them beautifully displayed wedding photographs that still hold every memory and emotion from long ago when you said, “I do.” Not only will you be able to tell your loved ones stories about your wedding day, you will forever be able to show them. I have the honor of capturing those moments, and that’s one of the reasons why I established Cana Rose Photography. While starting my photography business and working in a photo studio, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. I became very sick and many basic functions were suddenly stripped away. For months, my strongest desire was to do the things in life that brought me joy. During treatment, my body became too weak to even hold a camera. Through constant prayer, support from my loved ones, treatment and the healing hand of God, I began to experience what many people said was an impossible healing. Day-by-day, I could walk more, function better and began to resume normal life. However, I didn’t want to resume “normal” life. During a time of struggle and grief, I learned that life is too short—you should pursue your dreams whole heartedly. I’ve been given back life, hope and my future. Those are things that I prayed daily would return. Now, I don’t want to waste the time that I’ve been given. I know in my heart that photography is my destiny. My vision is that all young women will recognize their God-given beauty. No matter your age, fears or failures, if you have faith and determination you can do anything you set your mind to. At 18, I became a full-time business owner and entrepreneur. I’m now running a successful photography business and I’m not even in my 20s. Every day, I’m thankful I get to create beautiful images that will last a lifetime. Learn more at CanaRose.com. DOG’S LIFE
Doggie Dailies for Healthy, Happy Hounds
I
n the early 90’s, my father, Scott Brown, had his fill of the New York City financial world. He wanted to go out on his own and began searching for a business he could buy in a market he was passionate about. One day while in a pet shop in NYC he ran into a pilot who was buying a jar of dog supplements. They got to talking and the pilot told him he stopped here every time he was in the city because they were the only good supplements he could find that had quality ingredients and that actually worked. Having always been a dog lover and frustrated with the mass produced, low quality supplements in the market, he tracked down the owner of the business and made an offer to buy the company. He saw this as an opportunity to produce and distribute a product that could help dogs live happier, healthier lives. More than 25 years later, he still owns and operates IN Diet Supplements which are now available throughout the world. I grew up working in my dad’s factory in the summers. I remember hearing stories from tons of customers about how their dogs had improved so much since starting on his products. When my dad offered me a chance to learn the company business, I didn’t hesitate to accept. I love working with my old man and helping dogs as much as he does. My goal has always been to grow our internet presence and I constantly tinkered with our website and marketing to increase our visibility online. I knew we had a really special product, I just needed to get it into the hands of more dog owners. In 2014, we partnered with my long-time friend and fellow St. Edward’s alum, Caroline McNally, to market our new brand of supplements, Doggie Dailies. With Caroline’s expertise, Doggies Dailies has helped more than 100,000 dogs in just a few short years. We began with a hip and joint supplement for dogs and continue to create new products using only the highest quality ingredients, which is what really sets us apart. We recently launched our probiotic supplement this summer and received wonderful feedback. We truly love what we do and plan to continue making our high-quality, small-batch products for years to come. Learn more at DoggieDailies.com.

DOG’S LIFE
Pet Therapy is Good Medicine
F
ido is affectionate, likes to snuggle, and his wagging tail brightens your day. Have you ever wondered if he would be a good therapy dog? A therapy dogs needs to possess a good temperament, be socialized and polite, enjoy being petted, and be able to resist food upon command. He should interact well with people and other dogs and not have an anxious personality. Being a therapy dog requires good overall health and hygiene and behavioral certification from an approved organization. If Fido successfully navigates the American Kennel Club’s ‘Good Citizen’ test, he is a likely candidate for a therapy dog. A series of 10 tests designed to reveal how well he will obey a handler, passing this training is a good indicator of your dog’s future as a therapy dog. Dog therapy certification programs focus on testing how your dog will likely respond to noise and chaos commonly found in nursing homes and hospitals. Can he remain calm if you are out of sight? Does he accept a stranger’s approach and touch? Does he obey commands to ‘drop’ or ‘leave it’? Fido must be at least one year of age, have never bitten a human being, and be current with his health care. Verification from your veterinarian that an annual check up has been performed and vaccines for Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Parvovirus have been administered within the past year are required. He must test negatively for Heart Worm (or be on medication if he tested positively within the previous two years). His veterinarian will be asked to sign and submit periodic verification of his ongoing veterinary health. Trimmed nails, clean ears and teeth, clear eyes, and fresh fur are all essential before entering a registered pet therapy facility. Fido will be identified with a photo ID badge and a bandana or other accessory from the organization he represents. Once he is registered, the two of you can be off and running! LIFE
WELL VESTED
Pour-Over Will Although your trust takes the place of the traditional last will and testament in dictating your estate plan, a pour-over will is still needed to direct assets held outside of your trust to your trust when you pass. This ensures that when you pass, your trust will still apply to assets you failed to transfer to your trust while you were alive.
A Checklist for an Effective Estate Plan
T
hough it may seem like a stressful endeavor, taking the leap to establish your estate plan can actually take a great deal of weight off one’s shoulders. A proper estate plan can save your loved ones from the time and expenses of probate and ensure the quick and efficient distribution of your estate. Although a simple will suffices in dictating your wishes, your estate can still be subject to probate, taxes, and other administrative hurdles if not planned carefully. These documents should be on your estate plan checklist.
Durable Power of Attorney A durable power of attorney is a far-reaching document wherein you grant an agent broad authority to deal with your property and transact with third parties on your behalf. At a time when diminished capacity later in life has become more prevalent, a durable power of attorney is a vital tool. Designation of Health Care Surrogate Designation of health care surrogate allows you to name a loved one as your health care surrogate. A health care surrogate will speak to and confer with doctors and make health care decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make those decisions for yourself. Living Will In a living will, you declare that you do not wish to be kept alive artificially through the use of various medical devices if you are found to be in a persistent vegetative state (including, for instance, inoperable end-stage cancer) or if you are otherwise irreversibly incapacitated. Long-time Florida residents will recall the Terry Schiavo case and the importance of a living will.
Revocable Living Trust A revocable living trust takes the place of the last will and testament as the vehicle through which your heirs will receive your property. LIFE
WELL VESTED
What’s the hardest thing to talk about? Death, religion, politics?
W
ould it surprise you to know that one of the most difficult things to discuss is money? Perhaps this is because money represents more than a topic—it can represent control, power, embarrassment, insecurity, fear. For some people, the hesitation stems from a natural reluctance to confront their own mortality or their potential for future disability. For others, avoiding the topic is caused by the perception that planning is associated with complicated—and expensive—legal and tax issues. Silence can be harmful, avoiding these sometimes difficult conversations can have detrimental outcomes and unexpected consequences for your family, such as:
Passing On Bad Habits - Talking to your children about money now can help them avoid mistakes in the future. The key is to talk about what money means to you and why you worked hard to achieve your success. It involves being open about the challenges and responsibilities that accompany wealth— including what you might have wished you’d done differently when younger. And, most important, it’s about your values and what you wish for yourself and your children to accomplish with your privilege. The conversation can serve as an empowering first step to forming a healthy relationship with wealth.
Lost Opportunities - It’s never too early for your children to understand the value of creating a wealth plan that takes family members’ needs into account. Family members may not be aligned on priorities, such as long-term health care needs, charitable giving and generational gifting strategies, and taking the time to establish common goals is the first step in understanding how all members can participate in achieving them. Lack of communication can ultimately lead to misunderstandings and divergent objectives that could jeopardize your legacy and work against your values. Costly Procrastination - Perhaps the hardest of conversations to have as an adult is with your aging parents. This is where the danger of putting it off grows exponentially. Once a crisis hits, it’s often too late. Now is the time to determine if sufficient long-term health care plans have been made, as well as who will make financial decisions on your parents’ behalf if they lose the ability to safely handle their money. Proper planning gives you time to discuss your decisions with family members. This open communication can help to reduce, if not eliminate, the risk of family discord, resentment or conflict.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.
WARNING FLAGS
REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

November-December 2017
Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
It’s the holiday season and it appears the planets are bestowing much-needed positive vibes our way. There’s a full moon on November 4 when everything is more heightened. The new moon on November 18 is always a great time to plant seeds for new beginnings. Mercury retrograde starts December 3 and goes until December 22. Mark you calendar and remember things often don’t go as planned during Mercury retrograde. This December is an excellent time to remember what you’re grateful for and remove anything from your life that no longer serves you. Happy Holidays! ARIES: You won’t be bored or lonely this November! Passion is the
theme this month. This could mean a new love affair or some heated arguments. Whatever is going on, everything is heightened and over the top. You could feel as if you’re on cloud nine or completely overwhelmed. December brings some much-needed lightheartedness. All this playful energy might have you feeling not terribly sensible. Fortunately, December 6-8 has Saturn putting some limits to your excessive tendencies. Starting December 19, you’ll need to focus on career matters. You’ve had your fun in the sun and now it’s time to get back to work!
TAURUS: Three planets will make themselves known in sexy Scorpio
and in your house of relationships. If you’ve been trying to lay low in the romance department, it’s probably not going to work. Looks like either friends or a certain someone is going to force you out. This is a good thing because on November 5, Mercury lands in funny and friendly Sagittarius. More fun is headed your way and a lot more enjoyment than you’ve had in a long time. The new moon on November 18 brings personal commitments to the forefront. During December, Mercury is retrograde for most of the month so things might not go as planned. However Venus, your ruling planet has set you up for a really lovely holiday season.
GEMINI: Mark November 16 on your calendar. You’ll either fall in love
(it could be a love partner or even a new pet you are considering) or you’ll be dreaming about something that seems unreachable, but really is not. It’s important to keep the vision you have for your future in the forefront, especially around November 18-19. After a rather hectic November, December is looking like it will be a lot more relaxing. On Christmas, loving Venus will get together with Saturn making you feel very content with your current situation. Mark down December 3-22 as Mercury will be retrograde so expect people to be a bit more unreliable than usual.
CANCER: Right up until November 7, home matters will take up all of your time. It will all be worth it, so just pace yourself. The new moon on November 18 ushers in some delicious, fun times. The entire end of November looks great, but be careful around November 19, as that’s a stressful day for everyone, especially sensitive Cancerians. After two and a half years, the task masker planet Saturn will change signs on December 19. This will put the emphasis from your work section to personal relationships. Be prepared to bring structure and stability to an existing relationship that will prove to be very grounding for you in the years ahead. LEO: You won’t feel like staying home in November. Everything is
indicating your need to get out and have fun. If single, you could meet a fascinating new person. You’re basically in a fantastic position to get what you want and to have things work out for you in an easy manner. Enjoy this time, as it is rare. The extraordinary times continue into December with a very active social schedule. Your mission during the holiday is to watch out for being overly indulgent. This goes for both food, spending money and anything else that you might want to indulge in.
VIRGO: This holiday season is off to a wonderful start, bringing you closer
to family and friends. The aspects around November 16 are positively dreamy. It’s as if your guardian angels are working overtime to make sure you are super content. Be cautious around November 28. Don’t get into an argument over something that’s essentially not that important. With Mercury going retrograde on December 3, you might get frustrated by things not going as you’ve planned. Just relax into it and try to be patient with things you have no control over.
LIBRA: The full moon on November 4 could find you in the middle of a situation where you have to be the mediator. Whether it’s a situation between co-workers or family members, remember that your sign is all about fairness. If anyone can make sure all parties concerned will feel happy with the end result, it’s you. During the month of December, you should watch 90

your tongue, as you might be tempted to be a little too honest. Sometimes it’s better to leave certain things unsaid. December 25 is a time when you’ll have good news to share regarding a professional matter.
SCORPIO: November 11 is a magnificent day for anything having to do
with work. You should have great results regarding some project you’ve been working on. From the middle to end of November, your personal magnetism is at an all time high. You may have lots of people wanting to spend time with you. If they want your money, go slow. December is a month to remember. Talk about merrymaking! You’re in a holiday mood and kicking up your heels. Just remember that Mercury is retrograde from December 3-22 so chances are pretty good that things might not go as planned. Try to relax and go with the flow.
SAGITTARIUS: There’s a really nice aspect on November 11 that will
make it possible for you to move forward on a plan or adventure you’ve been dreaming about for a long time. By November 28, you have another opportunity to make things happen, so move forward with confidence. It’s a good time to be a Sagittarius in December. Relax into all the delightful opportunities coming your way, including new relationships. If you’re not attached, this is an excellent time to meet someone special. On Christmas Day, you’re in your element, surrounded by family and great friends.
CAPRICORN: Things are pretty intense for you this November, with aspects that will be urging you to stand in your truth, especially with difficult family members. Your Thanksgiving may be a bit unorthodox this year as your relatives sort out their differences. In December, you’re feeling a lot more optimistic. Saturn is moving into your sign, where that planet most likes to be. This hasn’t happened in 29 years, so be grateful for what’s coming your way. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Mercury’s retrograde period from December 3-22. AQUARIUS: The sky is full of aspects to keep you on your toes. Lots of
changes underfoot, especially in your work section. If you’re thinking of changing jobs or asking for a promotion, look at November 13 as a very positive day for you. It seems like you might be in charge of all the family holiday comings and goings, so just know that you’ll be appreciated for keeping it all together. On December 19 and 21, make sure you’re tactful. Someone could be getting under your skin. You can handle stress better than most, just don’t let this situation percolate because it’s just not worth it.
PISCES: The full moon in earthy Taurus on November 4 will assist you
in making a wise choice. If you have something you’ve wanted to say to someone, early November would be the time to do it. Around Thanksgiving, there are some tricky aspects. Don’t let family members get on your nerves. The entire month of December has you feeling financially blessed as Venus, the planet of love will be in extravagant Sagittarius. Just make sure you don’t pull out all the stops trying to make everything perfect for your loved ones. Go easy and save some of your money for that proverbial rainy day.
