LIFE
WELL SAID
Take the Scenic Route… As the lazy days of summer turn into fall, beach days and boating remain favorite pastimes thanks to our sunny Florida home. As the humidity declines, it’s a great time of year to get out and explore! From scenic drives along the river both north and south, to biking trails in Palm Beach, there are so many fabulous places to see! Take a hike at a state park you’ve never been to. Visit one of the salty old towns like Hobe Sound, Port Salerno or Rockledge. These charming places have survived for generations. See why! While you’re out exploring, check out the Mom-and-Pop shops and restaurants. Supporting local businesses throughout the Treasure Coast helps everyone. September in Vero is always a slow time for locals. Now more than ever is the best time to get out and shop local so they can continue to offer the greatest products and services. October is breast cancer awareness month. I’m grateful to celebrate my 3rd year of life after cancer. Luckily, mine was discovered early and my recovery and healing time was minimal. Others are not so fortunate. Join us as we celebrate life at Paddle in Pink, September 30 at Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian. Begin the morning on the Indian River Lagoon with yoga and a paddle while listening to the East Harbor Band. Be sure and purchase your raffle tickets to win our amazing giveaway! If you can’t make the morning event, you can still dance the night away starting at 7:30pm with the Paddle in Pink Glow Party at the Sandbar at Captain Hiram’s, including food and drink specials. Whether you’ve fought this battle personally or someone you know and care about has, cancer affects us all. Come celebrate survivors, prevention and early detection! Don’t forget to schedule those yearly exams and get checked. Early detection saves lives— I know because it saved mine! Be sure and read the article by Dr. Raul Storey, my oncologist, on page 48. Vero Beach is so lucky to have amazing physicians!

ABOUT OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS
LYNDSAY CUNNINGHAM is a Vero Beach native that has always had a passion for horses and photography. Throughout her life, she has traveled the country as an upper level 3-Day event rider (similar to a triathlon) with her horses. After high school, she moved to Boston to train with a well-known rider. Her days were spent riding and training, and at night she took classes at Boston University. This is where her passion for photography came to life. She took an evening course with John Robaton, a National Geographic photographer. He taught her the basics of the camera and how to manipulate photos in the development process inside a dark room. With the advent of new digital technology, Lyndsay now uses her Canon Rebel T5i and Sony a6000 to document the outdoors, family, farm life, sea life, and all that Mother Nature has to offer! Lyndsay is thrilled to be a part of our Portfolio family and she’s excited about our readers being a part of her photography journey! @lyndsay_cunningham_photography lyndsaycunninghamphotography.com (772) 538-3772
JOE SEMKOW believes in capturing a moment so it can be savored for a lifetime. He has the heart of a wanderer and lives life one day at a time. He wants people to feel his work through his eyes and experience it as if they were right there enjoying the view. For Semkow, photography is a way to escape the hard times of life and disappear in to the serenity of Mother Nature. His images are in homes all over the country and belong to people who used to live here, or still do and love waking up to something spectacular. Semkow wants you to remember that life is a gift and that our time here is special. The beauty around us is our happy place and it does not cost us anything, it only asks that we respect and cherish it. @semkow116, InfiniteCaptures.com (407) 242-5117

Our cover shot was taken on a hot summer day in Stuart at the famous banyans near Sandspit Park. Our cover models, Chris McGuire and Jamie Stalquist, both local residents and dear friends, were great sports about biking in the summer heat. Drives Dives Written by BETH SEMBLER Photography by LYNDSAY CUNNINGHAM
UNPLUG. Technology is great; it has literally transformed nearly every aspect of modern life. We’re able to research and look up anything, communicate with family and friends, work virtually from anywhere and stay in tune with the latest news. While it’s convenient, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Anxiety is at an all-time high. There is, however, a healthy and old-fashioned antidote to all that connection: there’s nothing better than a little fresh air and sunshine…and let’s not forget salt water! ESCAPE. Take a drive, go for a dive, jump on a bike or take a hike. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just get out there! Scientific studies show that interacting with nature significantly lowers stress. The amazing thing is, in as little as 30 minutes, you can change your perspective and start breathing again. DISCOVER. While it’s fun to look at other people’s fabulous vacation photos and dream about that big getaway, we’re fortunate we live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. We can head in any direction and discover amazing natural beauty, artsy views and scenic vistas that would stop a National Geographic photographer in their tracks. It’s ours for the taking, it just takes a little bit of effort to unplug, escape and discover.
DRIVE IT.
Photography by LYNDSAY CUNNINGHAM
Skip A1A and discover the roads less traveled— roads the locals simply call the “River Road” and “The Trail.” Located to the north and south of us, these historic two-lane roadways, which were once made of crushed shell, lead you along the Indian River Lagoon. You’ll travel through quaint small towns, past well-preserved historic homes, large groves of tropical fruit, through oak hammocks, even the occasional riverfront equestrian estate.

TO THE NORTH
n a little less than an hour’s drive, you can partake of an amazing scenic drive that takes in both South Tropical Trail (The Trail) on Merritt Island and Rockledge Road (River Road) in Rockledge. The drive starts in Indian Harbor Beach at the historic Mather’s Bridge, which was originally built in 1927 and operates today as a swing drawbridge over the Banana River. This allows you access to the southern-most end of the trail and brings you to the island which is surrounded by the Indian River Lagoon to the west and the Banana River to the east. Here, the land forms a narrow peninsula, known as Dragon Point where the two bodies of water come together. This narrow spit of land was once home to Annie, a very large dragon sculpture that was thought to protect the island. She stood as a landmark from 1971 until she was damaged by hurricanes in 2002. A newer version of the dragon is under construction today, perhaps paying homage to the ever-popular “Game of Thrones.”
The drive “up the island” allows you to simultaneously take in the sights, smells and sounds of both the Indian River Lagoon and the Banana River. “The Trail” is lined with towering oaks, palms and heritage tropical fruit trees, and as the land widens, you’ll see the occasional equestrian estate. This portion of the drive takes you to the 520 Causeway, where you’ll head west over the Indian River to historic Cocoa Village. It’s worth spending some time in this quaint redeveloped downtown before jumping on Rockledge Road to continue your journey. The Florida Legislature named this 15-mile road as an official Scenic Drive in 1965 and it continues to be popular today. Winding past carefully restored historic homes, past large coquina rocks and up climbing elevations, the drive provides stunning vantage points of the river to the east while enjoying the shade of large oak canopies. It ends at U.S. 1 just south of Rockledge, where it provides quick travel back to the Treasure Coast.

AND TO THE SOUTH
O
ld Florida charm is bountiful along the 20-mile journey on Indian River Drive from Fort Pierce to Sewall’s Point in Stuart. The postcard worthy views of the Indian River Lagoon and the long wooden docks stretching out into the waterway, coupled with quaint cottages painted in tropical colors, lend itself to a scene from Florida in the 1950s. Plan to take your time, as the speed limit is 35 miles per hour and strictly enforced. Along your journey, you may want to stop and enjoy a bite to eat at the classic Conchy Joe’s Seafood Restaurant in Jensen Beach or have a cold drink at one of the many hole-in-the wall local establishments. The secret to this drive is taking your time to unplug, escape and discover. While cruising along from Fort Pierce to Stuart, it’s easy to be captivated by the stunning river views. From high bluffs to charming little towns and quirky mailboxes, you’ll discover something new with each turn on this scenic road.
SNAIL MAIL While amazing water views are a given, what’s unexpected is the array of whimsical and creative mailboxes that dot these scenic drives, bringing a personal and artistic flair to one of life’s mundane tasks: receiving “snail mail” from the U.S. Postal service. Custom mailboxes range from coastal-inspired sea creatures, birds and seafaring vessels, to hand-carved Tahitian goddesses and a cool Pineapple-headed man wearing Ray-Ban-style sunglasses. Manatees, orcas, pelicans, flamingos and other tropical themes are prominently featured in most of these front-yard conversation starters. One of the most creative and elaborate efforts is a full-sized Evinrude boat motor transformed into a sleek white mail receptacle. It’s apparent that great care has been made to preserve the integrity of the motor while turning it into a fun repository for packages and print materials. Handmade, custommade, store-bought or embellished…it’s clear that receiving mail is a personal and imaginative affair along the Treasure Coast.

F
lorida is heaven in the fall. The humidity is lower, the sea breezes cool things down a bit and it’s a great time to be outside. Even if you aren’t that into nature, we’ve got a few places that will inspire you to discover and get outside. Whether you crave the natural beauty of the woods and creeks, or cruising along paved roadways, feeling the sunshine on your cheeks and the wind in your hair will ease your day-to-day stress. We’re lucky to have year-round biking weather surrounded by plenty of natural beauty and flat terrain, making cycling easy and fun for the entire family! Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike - you can rent them in a variety of places. Recreational biking is relaxing and most of the trails are somewhere between 5 and 15 miles long. Always wear the proper safety equipment and be aware of the dangers of vehicles. Choose bike trails where you can enjoy the views and make stops along the way. Here’s a great place to take a ride outside this fall.
LAKE TRAIL IN PALM BEACH Need a bike? Don’t want the hassle of loading up your own bike? No worries! Rent from Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop. The staff at the shop are so helpful and rentals are reasonably priced. They’ll give you a map, point you in the right direction, and tell you the best places to eat and grab a cold one! Cycling around the trails of Palm Beach is 8-10 miles of fun if you do the entire loop. The Lake Trail is almost 5 miles of safe, paved trails, but there are spots where you have to deal with traffic. If you cruise to the inlet, take a break there and then cruise back. It’s an easy breezy ride behind the backyards of millionaires. The paved trails run between breathtaking mansions with private yachts on the Intracoastal. You’ll ride underneath royal poincianas, glimpse great architecture, historical buildings, and see one of the largest uprooted trees near the Flagler Museum. The skyline along the river is beautiful! Enjoy seeing the museum and having lunch in Palm Beach! www.portfolio-verobeach.com

DIVE IT. EXPLORE LIFE UNDER THE SEA Grab your fins and snorkel! The warm waters of the Atlantic are especially inviting and our shores are lined with small natural reefs brimming with sea life. Calm, flat days are perfect for exploring our offshore reefs. Snorkeling offers so much to discover of life below the surface. When the visibility is great, you can see a nice variety of fish and sea creatures. Our favorite local snorkeling spots include the Breconshire shipwreck in front of Costa d’Este, the reefs and the Urca de Lima historical site just north of Pepper Park, and the best one for beginner snorkelers is Bathtub Reef on South Hutchinson Island in Stuart. Always remember to simply observe life underwater, avoid touching or standing on the reef, and try to use sunscreens that are safe for our oceans. Exploring sea life is a great way to teach our young children to love and protect our coastal waterways.
TOP 5 LOCAL DIVE SPOTS • Sexton Plaza Beach (Breconshire shipwreck), Vero Beach • Riomar Reef, Vero Beach • Pepper Park (Urca de Lima shipwreck), Fort Pierce • Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach • Bathtub Beach, Stuart

NEARSHORE REEFS of South Hutchinson Island
T
he nearshore waters of Hutchinson Island on Florida’s east coast have clusters of Sabellariid worm reef from Fort Pierce Inlet to the St. Lucie Inlet. There are several reasons for the abundance of worm reefs along the island. The Gulf Stream comes close to the island bringing a wealth of plankton for the worms to eat. Hutchinson Island has mid to high energy beaches. This means that there is always plenty of sand in the water for the worms to build their tubes. There is plenty of nearshore hard substrate for the worms to build on. Coquina rock ledges and limestone outcroppings of the Anastasia formation are both exposed along our shoreline and create the perfect attachment site for a worm reef to form. The Sabellariid worm is a small marine bristle worm (about 1-2 inches long) that attaches to the hard substrate in the surf zone and builds a tube home around its body with sand grains. They build their homes in colonies, one next to the other, creating a colony of about 50,000 per square meter. There are 110 species of Sabellariid worms in the world and the one along Florida’s east coast builds nearshore reefs from Cape Canaveral to Biscayne Bay. The Bathtub Reef in Martin County at the south end of Hutchinson Island is the best example of a Sabellariid worm reef in Florida and perhaps the world. The reef is 2.4 kilometers long extending north from the St. Lucie Inlet and tapers into the beach at the north end. The north half of the reef is exposed at low tide and forms a calm, warm, shallow area between the reef and the beach at this location. Because of this, locals gave it the name “Bathtub” Reef Beach. Worm reefs create homes for a wide range of plants and animals. Encrusting algae, sponges, tunicates and corals also grow on the reef substrate. A wide range of animals inhabit the reef, including amphipods, sea urchins, spiny lobster, octopus and several tropical fish species such as
damsels, pork fish, grunts, grouper, snook, barracuda, tarpon and sharks. Also, sub-adult and juvenile sea turtles frequent the worm reefs. Bathtub Reef Park is a unique and special reef formation in that it is so accessible to the public. Wading out to the reef is very easy, especially at low tide, making snorkeling on the shallow reef most enjoyable, even for the beginner. The reef gets deeper south toward the St. Lucie Inlet to a depth of about 8 feet, while successive reef lines run parallel to reef as you go east in depths of 10-30 feet. While exploring any reef, please do not touch or damage the living reef and be careful to obey all fishing and diving regulations. Carry a floating dive flag, even in the shallow water, so you can be recognized by boaters and lifeguards. Do not walk on the reef at low tide, as you will crush the top of the worm tube and kill the animals that build this living reef. Be safe, enjoy and help protect the reef by sharing what you learn. Hooked on
Written by HANNAH GIBSON Photography by MIKE SCOTT
SHARK DIVING W
hen people ask me what shark diving is like, a weird combination of words fall from my mouth; it’s like floating in outer space, surrounded by these incredible aliens who have evolved over millions of years to keep our oceans balanced and clean. Some might think there’s a little too much salt water in my brain, but if you hear me out, I know you’ll be hooked. Like most Floridians, I love spending time in the ocean, but time spent here comes with a side of sharks. We catch glimpses of them here and there, and while they are in every corner of our oceans, most people will never get to experience what they are really like. Luckily, they’re right in our backyard. Bryce Rohrer of Florida Shark Diving started his Jupiter-based charter in 2012 with the goal of showing people a whole new side of sharks. While smashing stereotypes, Captain Rohrer offers both locals and visitors the experience of a lifetime: freediving with one of the most feared apex predators on the planet. Upon arriving at the dock, Capt. Rohrer and his crew give a run-down of the trip, along with some educational info on species and behavioral displays. After cruising out to one of their usual spots, a milk crate full of tuna is thrown overboard to attract the sharks—then the show begins. While there’s always the option of staying in the cage, the majority of guests quickly realize the greater connection of being in a completely natural environment. Slowly and cautiously rising up from below, the sharks arrive, drawn in by the smell of an easy snack. They move in a seemingly coordinated harmony with the crew, divers and each other, while visitors observe from the surface. “When I dive down deep on one breath, as I watch the sharks move around me, everything turns to slow motion. It is where I am the most at peace,” explains Alex Carrier, dive guide. Whether you’re a novice or advanced diver, there’s something for everyone to take away from this trip, in addition to the promise that it won’t be like anything you’ve experienced before. Mike Scott is a Florida underwater photographer, specializing in shark diving and underwater photography out of West Palm Beach, Florida. His three divisions cover underwater photography and creative portraiture. Experience the prehistoric natural wonder of Devil’s Den.
FRESH DIVES
Diving often evokes thoughts of salt water, coral reefs and tropical fish. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, here are two outstanding freshwater dives that make a great weekend getaway from Vero Beach.
Written by KELLY BRUCE BEARD Photography by KELLY & JUSTIN BEARD
Dive Devil’s Den Located between Ocala and Gainesville, Williston is
home to a unique underground spring, accessed by descending into a dry cave. The way the light shines through the natural skylight makes for an ethereal diving experience. Snorkel or scuba dive in and out of darkness and into streaming rays of sunlight penetrating the crystal-clear, 72-degree water. In the winter, steam emanates like smoke from the chimney opening, prompting early settlers give it the name, “Devil’s Den.” The maximum depth of this spring is 54 feet and the geology is remarkable to explore. Many extinct animal fossils dating back to the Pleistocene Age have been discovered inside this spring. Devil’s Den is a privately-owned scuba diving training center that provides equipment rentals, air fills, a gift shop, even lodging. Snorkeling admission is $15/weekdays, $20/weekends; scuba admission is $38 per diver. Reservations are not accepted, so if you’re day-tripping, be sure to arrive early. Start planning your dive at DevilsDen.com.
Mingle with the Manatees of Crystal River Add ‘snorkeling with manatees on Florida’s Nature Coast’ to your bucket list! Crystal River is the only area in Florida where people can legally interact and swim with manatees in their natural habitat; during the winter, it’s also home to the world’s largest population of manatees. These gentle giants swim for the warmer waters of King’s Bay Wildlife Refuge and Three Sisters Spring, and guide services like River Ventures help facilitate safe interaction between humans and this imperiled species. Tours start at $64 (all-inclusive) and run three hours. The adventure begins in the classroom with manatee education and snorkel tips. Most importantly, you’ll learn about ‘passive interaction,’ ensuring an enjoyable experience for you and the animals. Gear and wetsuits are fitted before being transported to the dock, where a covered pontoon boat awaits. Your captain leads the cruise through a diverse estuary teeming with wildlife before you submerge into manatee territory. Observing these animals in their natural habitat is an incredible experience you’ll never forget.
The sleeping manatees of Three Sisters Spring.
Book your manatee tour at RiverVentures.com. Manatees are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Both the State of Florida and the U.S. Federal Government oversee the protection of the manatee. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission and the United States Fish & Wildlife Service have laws in place to ensure their safety. Those who threaten the safety of a manatee are subject to hefty fines and/or jail time. Never enter areas designated as “No Entry-Manatee Sanctuary.” A manatee sanctuary is off-limits to human activity such as boating, swimming, diving and fishing. Green Sea Turtles
Are Here to Impress!
F
or the third time in a row, we’re on track for a record green sea turtle nesting year. In 2013, Indian River County and Vero Beach experienced a massive increase in green turtle nests, which coincided with green turtle nesting statewide. Green turtles are known to have a biannual nesting pattern, leaving the possibility for an extremely high nesting year again in 2015—which happened! In 2015, the county experienced its highest number of green turtle nests since county-wide sea turtle monitoring began in 2005. The 2017 nesting season was also expected to be an extremely high nesting year and to our surprise, it has become another record year! In August, green turtle nesting numbers surpassed the 2015 season total. These green turtles will continue to nest until the end of October. Researchers and conservationists believe this increase in green turtle nesting is due to the consequences of federal protection under the Endangered Species Act implemented in 1973, as well as local efforts from the community. Marine turtles are estimated to sexually mature in 25-30 years. This means turtles born in the late 70s may just now be nesting for the first time on our beaches. We hope to learn more about our nesting population in the future as we continue monitoring our beaches for many years to come, instructed under the Indian River County habitat conservation plan.
Want to get involved? Here’s how you can help during sea turtle nesting season, March 1-October 31: • Turn off beachside white lights • Use red flashlights while walking on the beach at night • Remove beach furniture at night • Whatever you take to the beach, take it back home • Put your trash in waste bins and recycle when possible • Use reusable bags when you go shopping We’re fortunate to live in our own little paradise where we can experience nature anywhere we go, especially on our beautiful beaches. We share the beach with all sea life, especially our nesting turtles, and the best way to help them thrive is to enjoy our turtles from a distance.

Making the Most of
Lobster Season Lobster season is here! From August 6 until March 31, you can dive for a lobster dinner right here in Vero Beach. Here are some rules, along with some helpful tips from veteran Florida spiny lobster divers to help you have your best season yet. Know Before You Go: • Recreational harvesters must possess a valid Florida Saltwater Fishing License with a current spiny lobster permit. This will run you $22 total if you’re a Florida resident. • You must have a gauge and measure all lobster in the water. • The lobster’s carapace must be greater than 3 inches if you’re going to keep it. The carapace is measured from just behind the eyes to the start of the tail. • Lobster must be kept whole while at sea, tails can only be separated on land and must be greater than 5.5 inches. • Recreational harvesters can only keep six lobsters per day. • Egg-bearing lobsters must be released unharmed. Eggs are an orange, yellow, brown or red mass found covering the underside of a lobster’s tail. • You can’t use gear that will puncture, penetrate or crush the exoskeleton of the lobster. • Bully-nets, hoop-nets and use of artificial habitats are prohibited. • Snorkelers and divers must display a diver down flag. • Do not touch the coral. Note: This is not an official publication of lobster season rules and regulations. Visit MyFWC.com for a complete list of regulations and more information.
Pro Tips: • Typical gear includes a mask, snorkel, fins, a gauge for measuring lobster, diving gloves—Florida spiny lobster are called that for a reason, deep net, a lobster tickle stick or snare. • Lobster hide under coral ledges and rocks. With the tickle stick, you gently encourage them out from their hiding place and into your net. If you’re using a snare, we encourage you to watch a few helpful YouTube videos first to learn the technique. • You can free dive, or many SCUBA certified divers choose to use an oxygen tank or a third lung. A third lung is a floating air compressor that multiple divers can use at one time via connected hoses. Source: nmsfloridakeys.blob.core.windows.net/floridakeys-prod/media/archive/regs/mc_lobster

here has never been a more important time to step up and support our precious Indian River Lagoon. In its fifth year, Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge is raising awareness about the severity of the issues plaguing our lagoon and more importantly, trying to raise funds for the organizations that we know can help turn the tide. Each year, 100 percent of the money raised by our sprint triathlon is donated in equal shares between the Coastal Conservation Association, The Environmental Learning Center and the Ocean Research Conservation Association. Whether it’s lobbying in Washington for recreational fisherman and the waters they fish, educating children on what they can do as the next generation to keep us moving in the right direction, or merging marine biology and science to develop instruments that give us a better idea of what we’re up against, each of these organizations share our dream of cultivating livelier, safer and sustainable public waters for everyone to enjoy. Capt. Hiram’s is dedicated to making a difference in our community and we can’t do it without your help. To lend a helping hand, call Sam Vash, (772) 581-6179 or email svash@hirams.com.

BOATER’S
LIFE
Do More of
WHAT YOU LOVE
G
rowing up, our family spent a lot of time on Lake Murray, a large lake in Columbia, South Carolina. My dad was an avid fisherman and we were always on our boat in the summer, fishing, water skiing or just exploring the different islands. A love of all things related to boating ensued. As I got older, another passion was triggered by trips to the local airport, watching airplanes take off and land. I began my flight training at 18 and was flying for a living at 21. Corporate aviation was my career choice but my love for boating never waned. Though different, they share a demand for attention to detail and a desire to never stop learning. My wife Tricia and I retired to Vero Beach for many reasons, but its proximity to the Bahamas was a big consideration. In my flying career, the Bahamas were a frequent destination and an appreciation for the crystal-clear water and beautiful islands made it a favorite of ours. Additionally, Vero Beach’s own natural beauty, gorgeous beaches, plentiful wildlife and magnificent sunsets on the Indian River were a major draw for us. It was only natural for us to want to share this waterway with both locals and visitors and so “Indian River Excursions” was born. As I’ve been told many times, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” Both aviation and boating have proven that to be true for me and we look forward to seeing you aboard “Stargazer” in the near future. Visit indianriverexcursions.com, (772) 925-2201 or indianriverexcursions@gmail.com to schedule your scenic water adventure.

all weather is on the way and that means the mullet migration that happens every fall is about to begin. This is a very special time of year when all of the local species of fish in the Indian River and off of the beaches will be gorging on giant schools of mullet to fatten up for the cooler winter months. Tarpon, jacks, snook, sharks, basically every fish will be feeding pretty much 24/7. For visitors and new residents, be especially careful swimming at the beach during these months, as the sharks will be very close to the beach. Exercise extreme caution early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Please try to catch-and-release and keep only what you can eat to ensure a successful future for these fish. Until next time, this is Captain Christian Yergens—tight lines!

Garlic Butter Lobster WITH AVOCADO LEMON FUSILLI
If you’re enjoying Florida lobster season (August 6 through
March 31), you’ll enjoy this simple dish. This is a twist on
classic scampi with the addition of vegetables and avocado to make a creamier, green sauce. The following recipe is
fool-proof, serves six to eight people, and tastes excellent the day after. Enjoy!
Bring pasta water to a boil and prepare pasta according to directions.
LOBSTER:
PASTA:
3 Florida lobster tails 3 tbs butter 3 cloves garlic ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper
16 oz. fusilli pasta 1 tbs butter 2 medium-sized zucchini ¾ cup frozen peas 1 tbs dried basil 1 tsp Himalayan pink salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 tbs fresh parmesan
PASTA SAUCE: 2 Hass avocados 1 lemon (juiced) 1 lime (juiced) 3 cloves garlic ½ onion ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
In a pan, melt butter and add in garlic. Sauté until fragrant. Cut the lobster tails in half lengthwise. Season the meat with salt and pepper. Lay them on the pan shell side down. Turn the heat up to medium and allow them to cook until the shells turn red. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Flip the lobster meat side down for 4-5 minutes until cooked. Remove the lobster tails from the pan and set aside. In the same pan (without cleaning), melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Season the zucchini with dried basil or parsley. Sauté until it begins to get brown without losing the firmness. Flip after 3-4 minutes and remove from the pan. Add the peas to the pan with a splash of water over medium heat and let them sauté, stirring occasionally. For the sauce, add the ripe avocados, lemon juice, lime juice, garlic, onion and olive oil to the blender. Blend until smooth. The sauce should be somewhat thick, but not chunky. Strain the pasta leaving about ¼ cup of water. Add in sauce and veggies to mix. Top each bowl of pasta with warm lobster and freshly grated parmesan.

The C-word: Tips and Tools to Navigate Cancer
Y
ou go to the doctor’s office for an appointment after a biopsy to hear for the first time, “The C-word.” Cancer. It’s the type of diagnosis we’re never prepared to hear. It happens to a friend, a person we know, a loved one, but never to us. Almost half of all men and a third of all women in the United States will receive a cancer diagnosis at some time in their lives. The emotional response from the patient will depend on various factors; the patient’s support system, coping mechanisms and perception of illness. As patients struggle with issues of diagnosis, they may also face the social pressures that come from well-meaning friends who want more than anything for them to win this battle. It’s pivotal to understand, not only for the patient, but also for the family, that a healthy emotional response to a cancer diagnosis goes through different phases which involve an initial reaction, distress and adjustment. It’s basically an evolutionary process. The initial reaction to a cancer diagnosis often presents itself with shock and a sense of disbelief, followed by a period of emotional distress and despair which includes feelings of anxiety, anger and depression. The final stage, which most commonly happens after the patient has acquired a deeper knowledge of the disease and treatments, is when the patient finally reaches the adjustment period. Although these stages are usually constant across patients, people experience them differently. Most individuals seek encouragement from friends, family or additional support groups. We highly recommend using clergy, nurses, social workers, and patient navigators who are usually part of the hospital staff or from the oncology team. They have the duty of helping patients navigate the different paths of the healthcare system, appointments and financial issues. It’s important to keep in mind that each patient’s cancer and overall situation is unique, thus the way to approach it will vary between cases. One size does not fit all. Therefore, the best way to ease feelings of anxiety, despair and uncertainty is to keep an open and effective dialogue with your doctor.

September-October 2017
However, overall well-being is as important in recovery as any successful medical treatment. Below is a list of things that any patient and their close friends and family should keep in mind to help handle the situation the best way possible. These recommendations are effective in helping patients cope with newly diagnosed cancer: • Obtain facts about the type of cancer, as well as information from the doctor and reliable sources (scholarly articles, research, etc.) to help the patient make future decisions about the appropriate care. • It’s common to forget new information. Write down the material gathered for future references or questions. • Consider bringing a family member or a friend to doctor’s appointments to help remember what was said during the consultation. • Maintain honest, two-way communication with family members and doctors. Patients may feel isolated and in the dark if people mistakenly withhold important information based on the false belief that it will protect them from suffering. On the contrary, this might cause more anxiety and stress. Be honest, know your alternatives and remember that good communication can work as a tool to gain strength from each other. • Anticipate possible physical changes. Ask your doctor what changes you should expect and how treatment will impact your daily activities.
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is very important to improve your energy level. Also, some studies have shown that exercise and participating in enjoyable activities during treatment increases your dopamine levels, which will help you feel better and live longer. • Let your friends and family help you during this process. Stay positive. Be patient. • Determine what’s really important in your life, goals and priorities. • Try to maintain your normal lifestyle as much as possible. • We recommend that you seek professional advice regarding the financial aspects of treating cancer. • Support groups are essential. Talk to other people with cancer or cancer survivors. It’s comforting to talk to people who have been in the same situation. • For the vast majority of cancers, it’s always a good idea to consult with an oncologist to get his or her opinion about the diagnosis, prognosis and options of therapy. This is very important because your semantics about cancer might be wrong or far from the truth. • A cancer diagnosis does not mean that you will die. Nowadays, there are new advances in therapy; in fact, in many occasions we are able to successfully cure the patient.

Lyme Disease:
The Great Imitator
M
uch of the controversy surrounding Lyme disease revolves around the reliability of diagnostic tests and differing treatment methods. Many Lyme-literate MDs (LLMDs) feel the ELISA antibody test and Western Blot offered by major labs like Quest and LabCorp are problematic. LLMDs claim these standard tests produce many false negatives missing many cases of Lyme. My story began this way. In 2003, I first sought medical help in an attempt to discover why I was not feeling well. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue by an infectious disease doctor due to episodes of severe fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and high levels of antibody titers to the Epstein Barr virus. While this syndrome seemed to fit, the recurring low-grade fevers that accompanied my symptoms remained a mystery. Then in 2005, I began experiencing incessant sensations of pins and needles in my hands and feet. In 2006, I saw a neurologist and was first tested for Lyme. The Lyme antibody test came back “equivocal” and the corresponding Western Blot was negative, so Lyme was dismissed as a possibility. The neurologist followed me for three years, during which time I had three brain MRIs and a potential diagnosis of multiple sclerosis looming over me. Still unclear as to what was wrong, the doctor released me and I pushed on. In 2014, eight years later, I was again tested for Lyme by the same lab due to worsening of the joint pain. This time, both the antibody and Western Blot tests were glaringly positive and I met the stringent criteria set forth by the CDC for diagnosis of Lyme disease. Lyme is often called “the great imitator.” The symptoms can mimic other diseases, most commonly chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, MS, various auto-immune diseases, migraines and even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). If you’ve been diagnosed with one of the above conditions and continue to suffer despite treatment, you’re a likely candidate for Lyme testing. Find a practitioner knowledgeable in Lyme who offers the IgeneX test. IgeneX is one of the CLIA-certified specialty labs most trusted by LLMDs for Lyme and co-infection testing. Specialty labs stand by their methodology with data showing it delivers greater sensitivity in detecting
antibodies to and DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria which causes Lyme, and other pathogens known to cause tick-borne infection and illness. IgeneX testing is usually not covered by insurance and can be costly, however so is wasting years chasing symptoms without answers. Treatment for Lyme is expensive, time-consuming and does not guarantee a cure. That’s the harsh reality. Even LLMDs differ on the best course of treatment. Some use antibiotics long term, and within this group, some use IV antibiotics while others do not, some use single antibiotics and some prescribe them in combination. Many LLMDs recommend herbal treatment instead of antibiotics since there is concern about disruption to the gut microbiome with long-term antibiotic use. Nutritional supplements and/or supportive IVs are often used throughout treatment. These integrative therapies are employed to maintain adequate levels of essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, boost the immune system, promote detoxification, protect the gut and improve cognition and mood. Although Lyme testing and treatment are rife with challenges and pitfalls, there are many inspiring stories of patients’ recoveries that serve as a beacon of light in an often stormy sea. REMEMBERED
Words From War
“
n January 17, 1991, I, along with my newly minted Marine Private son assigned to 29 Palms, CA sat in my quarters at Edwards Air Force Base, CA and watched the “shock and awe” of the first combat missions of Desert Storm, considered the start of the War on Terror. My son served for 20 years and retired in 2011 as a Major who was promised Lieutenant Colonel if he would go to Afghanistan. He declined. Today, 26 years later, the War on Terror appears to be no closer to ending than it did in 1991. We, who have been in the military, believe the time is now to erect a monument to honor the living and dead of that war. The monument inception came from discussions with the Next Generation members of the Vero Beach Veterans organization, most of whom have experienced the difficulties faced since 1991 and have seen the war change in scope from active combat to the current training of Iraqi and Afghanistan troops. In the spirit of collaboration to obtain artistic perspective of the war, we worked with the Culture Council to find a monument sculptor who would share our vision.
That sculptor is Ross Power, an internationally recognized monument sculptor and longtime Vero Beach resident. Seeing this as an opportunity to explore an area that was new to him, he has spent significant time talking to military personnel who have been stationed in the Iraq/Afghanistan region to gain insight as to their experiences and thus create a monument that would have meaning to them. His creation is called “Words From War.” There are three walls upon which the various words are written. The walls symbolize the “T” walls that were placed around each major base of operations and used for protection from hostile fire. Due to the nature of this war, the “T” wall is recognized by our troops as the safety barrier beyond which was uncertainty. The words come from the mouths of warriors and apply not only to the War on Terror but will be recognized by warriors from all wars. We are just starting to raise funds for the monument; donations may be sent to the Veterans Council of Indian River County, P.O. Box 1354, Vero Beach, FL 32961. Our goal is to erect the monument by Memorial Day 2018 with a backup of Veterans Day 2018.
We, who have been in the military, believe the time is now to erect a monument to honor the living and dead of the war in Afghanistan.

ervice Above Self.” That’s the motto of Rotary, an international organization boasting more than 1.2 million members in almost 35,500 clubs around the world. Indian River County has a strong Rotary presence with five local clubs. Chartered in 1926, the Rotary Club of Vero Beach was the first club established in our area. We also have the Sebastian Club, Sunrise Club, Orchid Island Club and Oceanside Club. For the last 110 years, Rotarians worldwide have been committed to solving real problems. For example, beginning in 1979, Rotary pledged to rid the world of polio, a virus that attacks the nervous system and can lead to paralysis. Rotary has helped to vaccinate 2.5 billion children, successfully eliminating polio with only isolated cases reported. Rotary’s initiatives include promoting peace; supporting education; fighting disease; providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; saving mothers and children; and growing local economies. Locally, our five Rotary clubs each make a big impact in the community. Have you heard of the Florida Craft Brew & Wingfest, Twisted Tail Ribfest, Shrimpfest or Oktoberfest? These are several popular Rotary events raising money for charitable organizations. In addition, the Rotary Club of Vero Beach helps to educate children from impoverished families. The Sunrise Club has dedicated resources to cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon and improving seagrass beds and oyster habitat. Other local charities that Rotary helps are Youth Guidance, Homeless Family Center, Salvation Army, Special Olympics and many more. Rotarians are people of action. Through Rotary clubs, people from all continents and cultures come together to exchange ideas and form friendships and professional connections while making a difference in their backyards and around the world. Contact one of our local clubs to learn more. 54

A Whole New World B
efore moving to Florida, I never knew there was another world, filled with alien-like life and color, only a few feet deep and a stone’s throw from the ocean’s edge. As a kid growing up in North Carolina, my family made a yearly pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And after graduating college, I worked for 7 years in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, roughly 45 minutes from the Outer Banks. During my countless trips to the ocean, I regularly saw schools of baitfish, bluefish and jacks along the surface of the water. From the top down—the way I had always seen them— these fish looked like nothing more than silver flashes cutting through the water. The occasional Spanish mackerel, with their green back and yellow spot, were the only color ever spotted. It wasn’t until I moved to Vero Beach in 2006 that I became SCUBA certified and began seeing firsthand the assortment of life amongst the local reefs. Before that, the only octopus I had ever seen were in photographs or viral YouTube videos, and the only seahorse I had laid eyes on was in a local aquarium shop. Squid, while not completely foreign to me, were always battered and fried when I experienced them. My first-ever SCUBA dive took place on a frigid February morning at Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach. I was introduced into a world of aquatic life that previously was only obtainable through the photos and videos of others. Immediately I wanted to buy a camera and start documenting my experiences, and the vast array of life in our local waters, for others to see. My diving travels thus far haven’t taken me to faraway, exotic locations, but that’s not to say that I haven’t been able to see things that many will never experience. From nudibranchs (better known as sea slugs) and squid that measure no more than half an inch, to manatees and nurse sharks longer than you, there’s a wonderland of life teeming in our local waters. My hope is to show those with dry feet what they’re missing. View more images at SamWolfe.com.

Here’s to the Next Generation of
Artists in Vero
T
hroughout the 1990s, I taught art in the public schools of Douglas, MA. In the grand scheme of the “haves” and the “have nots,” Douglas, a blue collar mill town, was the latter. I was given a tiny supplies budget for 600 students a week. I didn’t even have an art room. It was “art in the cart,” a rickety cart wheeled from classroom to classroom. Despite its limitations, the community loved the fact I was there. I felt it. Without enough money for materials, I spent much of my salary on art supplies for teaching. I wanted the students to learn about the magnificence of art history as well as science, English and math through art. I didn’t want them to ever feel like “have nots.” In 1999, I was nominated for Massachusetts Art Teacher of the Year. I could easily list at least 100 reasons why art programs and art educators are crucial for our schools and our country. And so, I jumped at the chance when asked to help coordinate Art-Tini, an annual exhibit by the Vero Beach Art Club benefiting a local public school art education department. This year’s recipient is the art department of Oslo Middle School in Vero Beach. Mark your calendars: Art-Tini is Thursday, November 9 from 3pm to 7:30pm at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott, 5115 Indian River Blvd., Vero Beach. I applaud SpringHill Suites for sponsoring this event, an important example of how a community supports the next generation of creative leaders. Art-Tini will also include artwork and live jazz by Oslo Middle School students. There’s an old-world proverb that I love: “If you only have two pennies, spend the first on bread and the other on hyacinths for your soul.” Here’s to the future of art in America! Sensational Sunnies T
he eyes are the windows to the soul. Shouldn’t we protect them? Established in Jupiter, our story began in 2008 as a boutique retail sunglass shop selling designer sunglasses. The Sunglass Shoppe of Abacoa quickly became popular with locals as well as tourists because our focus wasn’t on selling sunglasses, but providing exceptional customer service. Our goal was to make customers happy at the time of purchase, for the life of their sunglasses, and beyond. Due to the strong ultraviolet rays and the active outdoor environment of South Florida, we encouraged our customers to consider sunglasses with polarized UV400 lenses. However, in many cases they didn’t look as stylish as the sport sunglasses with these qualities. Our customers were spending $200 to $300 or more on designer sunglasses with lenses that weren’t as good as the sport sunglasses. It was then that we realized the overwhelming need for high-quality, polarized sunglasses that look and feel good, and provide superior protection against the sun. Through countless hours of designing, testing, and strategizing, we made it our mission to manufacture great looking, high-quality polarized sunglasses at affordable prices. Add a lifetime warranty, and Abaco Polarized Sunglasses was born. When we design our products, we take into account the comfort of the frame by utilizing premium lightweight materials. Our styles are carefully designed to fit and flatter face shapes of all types. Our objective is to deliver an affordable and fashionable product that far exceeds customer expectations, while providing the highest level of sun protection. Abaco lenses are polarized UV400 to protect and preserve the eye from damaging ultraviolet radiation. The Abaco children’s line includes shatter resistant polycarbonate lenses to protect their eyes during active play. To make it even more fun, we offer matching adult and child frames so the entire family can experience Abaco. Abaco Polarized is dedicated to providing premium polarized sunglasses to help protect eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. We stand behind our products 100 percent and we’re committed to guaranteeing our customer’s satisfaction. Our Worry-Free 3328 Ocean Drive Warranty ensures that we will replace (772) 231-6228 any Abaco sunglasses with the same or equivalent pair should there be any 390 21st St. Miracle Mile manufacturer defects at any time. Unsung Heroes
M
artha Lemasters didn’t intend to become a modern day feminist role model. That happened by accident. In fact, she wrote her award-winning memoir, The Step to bring attention to the unsung heroes of the Apollo program. She was born in 1937 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to a modest home. Her mother was riddled with rheumatoid arthritis and often bedridden, barely able to take care of the three children she already had; she became pregnant and had an illegal abortion. She lay in bed for weeks on the brink of death. That experience made Martha painfully aware of the necessity for legal abortion. Martha graduated from high school, attended some college, and did what was the norm at the time, married and had kids. Her husband was a brilliant missile engineer at Kennedy Space Center. Martha longed to be part of something so important. When she told her husband her desire to work he exploded, “What could you do? You couldn’t make enough money to buy your own Kotex!”
66
September-October 2017
That, along with his infidelity, was all the motivation she needed. She got a divorce and soon landed a job working for IBM on the Apollo Program. Passionate about writing, Martha worked her way up to lead PR writer. It was the job of her dreams, but there were drawbacks. It was the 1960’s and most women didn’t work outside the home. The other mothers in her neighborhood wouldn’t allow their children to play with her three daughters because…women weren’t supposed to work. At the Cape, where men outnumbered women 200 to 1, sexual discrimination was common and sexual harassment was rampant. Martha was seventy-nine when she released her memoir, The Step and has been tireless in her efforts to promote her book. She soon discovered her story resonated mostly with women and she has become a sought after speaker for women’s groups. She proved that as a woman back in the 60’s, she could achieve career success, even with all the obstacles tossed in her path. She could be utterly independent and raise a family. She could get out of a bad marriage, and take responsibility for her own happiness. Written for the unsung heroes, The Step is serving another and arguably just as important role. As a reminder that woman are just as strong and capable as men, and always have been. Martha Lemasters continues to tour and gives talks around the country. In October, she will be addressing NOW, the National Organization for Women, in Charlotte, N.C. For more information about Martha Lemasters and her memoir, The Step, visit www.MarthaLemasters.com

t’s that special time of year when a unique phenomenon happens in the Indian River Lagoon. Just as fireflies light up the evening sky in the summer, tiny organisms called dinoflagellates can be found lighting up the inshore waters of our diverse estuary. Some marine organisms like worms, starfish, squid, jellyfish, bacteria, plankton and algae emit light, either to attract mates or ward off predators. Most of these creatures are found in the deep ocean waters, but in the Indian River Lagoon, during the heat of summer and early fall if conditions are right, dinoflagellate plankton multiply by the billions. If you’re at the right place at the right time, you can see a living laser light show called bioluminescence when the dinoflagellates emit a bluish white light when disturbed. In these conditions, every time a fish swims through an area that is chock full of dinoflagellates, a kayak paddles dips underwater, or a boat disturbs the water with its wake, these microscopic creatures light up! It’s phenomenal when a large marine mammal like a manatee or dolphin swims through it leaving a huge trail of underwater light just like a shooting star does in the sky. Dr. Edith Widder, founder of the Ocean Research Conservation Association in Fort Pierce, has been studying bioluminescent organisms for more than 30 years. “Dino blooms are usually preceded by rain events that flush nutrients into the water, followed by a series of calm sunny days that promote photosynthesis,” says Widder. “Blooms like the one in the photos used to be routine, according to some of the older fishermen I’ve talked to. 68
September-October 2017
They called it fire in the water. The fact is, the water can’t be too polluted or the dinoflagellates won’t grow.” The best time to view bioluminescence on the Indian River Lagoon is on a hot, dark night when the moon isn’t visible and close to 9 p.m. before the water starts to cool off. The darker it is on the water, the more pronounced the bioluminescence will be. The most ideal way to experience bioluminescence is by paddleboard, kayak or boat. And, you’re likely to see more activity in the shallow water near the mangroves where you might find horseshoe crabs, stingrays, manatees and various species of fish schooling and disturbing the dinoflagellates. So instead of lying on the couch watching nature shows on the Discovery Channel, pack up your cold drinks and insect repellant, and head out on a dark night to cruise the lagoon waters where you might see this amazing in-living-color light show right here in our backyard. The Sandhill Crane Circle of Life “All you have to do is look for beauty and she is there all around you, waiting to be discovered.” ~ Unknown
A
s a Vero Beach resident, this quote perfectly describes how I feel each time I step outside. Nature abounds here. If you listen closely, you’ll hear the sounds of the many species of birds residing in Vero, including the rolling, trumpeting noise the sandhill crane makes as it flies overhead. If you’re lucky enough, you might even encounter a pair of sandhill cranes welcoming their newborn colts to the nest. In March, I noticed two cranes standing in the lake with the sun setting behind them and it literally stopped me in my tracks. I sat down a comfortable distance away, and soon realized the pair were nesting! As I watched them for the next couple of days, I soon realized there was a baby! The hatchling’s colors blended so well with the nest that I might have missed it if I was not observing them through the lens of my camera. While looking over a photograph of the colt (the proper term for a baby), I noticed a tiny head in the background and realized there were two new baby cranes! On the first day, the colts, who already had feathers and the tiniest of wings, stayed on the nest and very close to their mom as they wobbled and attempted to stand. In a week, the family was making its way across Indian River Boulevard each morning at rush hour, and crossing back each evening at rush hour in route to their nest. This little bird family was not concerned at all about traffic. They confidently and gracefully led their chicks across the boulevard. The colts seemed to be more aware of how dangerous this crossing was and often were seen running to keep up. Many are unaware that these cranes often utilize our busy roadways. Sadly, some have been fatally struck, which can be devastating all around. Sandhill cranes mate for life, some reaching an age of 20 years old. It has been reported they release a loud cry when a mate or colt has been hurt and often resist leaving the scene. One day, when I was out photographing the nest, one of the babies was missing. Sadly, just a week later, I never saw the other baby again either. Life is so fragile. Even in nature. I still see mom and dad walking together, heads held high. I often wonder if they are as sad as I am, but something tells me, as painful as it might have been, they move forward together. Another great lesson from these magnificent birds. In Vero Beach, you just might get to experience the Florida sandhill crane up close and personal. If you don’t already admire them, you will!

ubbles & Boudoir was created for the bride who isn’t a “Night on the Town” type of bachelorette. It’s a luxurious experience for brides who would really enjoy doing something special with their bridesmaids. Imagine a twinkling light curtain, soft color palette, a talented hair and makeup team, and a pretty space for brides and their friends to spend the day being beautiful together before having group and individual portraits taken. Lounge around the studio and sip champagne while everyone has their hair and makeup professionally done. Open gifts filled with locally made bath products before slipping into tulle skirts and bralettes (provided by the studio) or bring your own outfits. Pose together for some fun group photos, then each girl will take the spotlight for boudoir-type portraits of her own. Sessions take place at the Nichole Marie Boudoir studio located in Sebastian. Photo packages are created to accommodate groups of 3-6, however, private boudoir sessions are also available. Clients can expect to book an appointment two months in advance. With the help of her family, much love and laughter is infused into each dog treat, with flavors like pumpkin peanut butter, sweet potato, banana flaxseed and, butternut squash. Grain free and gluten free treats are also available. Some items are seasonal, so check in at their booth at the farmer’s market often. These are perfect for dogs of all ages, dogs watching their weight and even dogs with more picky taste buds. Pick up a 4 oz. bag of treats at the Oceanside Farmer’s Market on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 pm. If you can’t make it to the market, Amy is happy to take your order by email and deliver it to you. Each order comes in a sealed bag to keep your dog’s treats fresh. These treats make a great gift for any pet owner. Also included in her product line, Amy offers chicken and steak jerky treats, chew toys and dog collars—all the items needed to make a great gift basket! For more information, or to place an order, call (772) 643-4814 or email DogDaysHomemadeBarkery@gmail.com. 74

Home Sweet Home
DOG’S LIFE
M
oving to a new home can be exciting for you but stressful to your pet. Here are some tips to ensure Fido is happy and secure in his new environment. Before you move, take the time to reinforce basic commands. Review his obedience training to ensure you are communicating as a team. This is important especially in unexpected situations. Ultimately you want to remind him that you are the pack leader and in control. Utilizing a recognizable spray or fragrance on his bed and toys in your former environment and then again in your new one will help to reinforce familiarity. Place his bed and bowls in similar locations to that of your previous home. Unless absolutely necessary, do not provide new bedding to coincide with your move. Fido may display signs of anxiety after moving, including lack of appetite, diarrhea, coughing, pacing, hiding, and destroying items in the home. However, do make certain any digestive issues are not of medical origin and alert your veterinarian if necessary. He may begin to follow you closely as you are his recognizable connection between your former and new home. Be on the lookout for displays of separation anxiety and a general neediness, and reassure him as needed. Repetitive and exceptionally fearful behavior may require a visit to your veterinarian for solutions to alleviate his stress. Fido may begin marking your home if another pet previously lived there. Correct him but do not be excessive. Be alert to signs of escape. Often, a dog will try to return to his former home on his own. Inspect your property and fences for escape routes to ensure his safety. Leash walking is especially important until Fido feels secure in his new environment. Changes in your traffic patterns can create anxiety in your dog so be aware of any routes he may take to return to your former neighborhood. If you’re moving to a new locale, be aware of geographical conditions. Rural areas are more prone to tick and flea control measures. The northeast has more incidence of Lyme disease and influenza, while the southwest is prone to more systemic fungal conditions.
Lastly, update Fido’s identification tags, and notify local licensing authorities and microchip registries of your new contact information. Obtain and display stickers for your new home to alert emergency personnel that you have a pet to ensure they are searched for in the event of an emergency. Home sweet home: sweet words to you and Fido alike! Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, Inc. He and Marjorie J. LIFE
WELL VESTED
The Morgan Stanley Business Owner Checklist This checklist helps us connect the pieces of your financial life with an overall strategy that is designed to put you on the path you envision. • Risk Review It is important to understand and protect against unforeseen events that can jeopardize the value – or even the continuity – of your business. Identifying these risks is the first step in helping to protect against them.
• Succession or Exit-Plan Assessment • Business-Needs Review Everything starts by zeroing in on the factors that make a difference in your business – from your perspective on ownership, control and liquidity, to the key challenges and opportunities you may face. Understanding these factors can play an important role in addressing your lifestyle and personal goals.
• Cash Management and Capital-Needs Review The lifeblood of any business is cash, whether accessing capital or managing receivables and payables. We can help review the strategies you have in place and, if appropriate, share alternatives to consider.
• Retirement and Benefits Assessment Having the proper benefits plan is an important recruiting and retention tool. We can help you review the benefits your business offers – including retirement, stock incentive plans, nonqualified deferred-compensation plans and employee-retention strategies – from the perspective of both employer and employee.
TRENT LEYDA Portfolio Management Director Senior Vice President, Wealth Management Financial Advisor
Planning ahead is vital as you look toward the next chapter of your business’ history. Whether selling a business—in whole or in part—or passing one on, there are a number of different exit strategies that can be considered.
• Family Wealth Plan Your business is a critical element of your personal wealth plan. We can help ensure that decisions made for one complement the other so that personal wealth and business wealth work together to increase the value of both.
• Key-Documents Organization You want to be sure you, as well as your spouse and/or beneficiaries, can access all your critical documents (powers of attorney, shareholder agreements, insurance policies, wills, etc.) when they are needed. For more information, contact the Leyda Kanner Group at Morgan Stanley, located at 3525 Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, (772) 234-1827, or visit MorganStanleyfa.com/LeydaKanner/.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.

We’ve come through a rather turbulent August, and September might feel a wee bit calmer, but it’s not until October that we can say things have settled down. Mercury goes direct on September 5 which should help relieve some stress, however, the following day is a full moon, which always makes us feel on high alert. The end of September will have everyone’s blood pressure up, so be prepared, as this is hurricane season! Once the full moon on October 5 is finished, we can finally relax. We’re circling back to our high season very soon, so enjoy these final months of the “off season.” ARIES: You’ve been burning the candle at both ends for over a month
now and it’s time to take some time off. However, wait until the end of September when the aspects are better. You have had so many daily duties making free time hard to come by. You’ve either got old debts that need to be paid, or some new bill that is weighing heavy on you. Be proud of the fact that you can work hard and make the money that you need to make. If you don’t have a long-range financial plan in place, October is the time to get that started. You’ve been putting some big decisions off, but by October 10, you might want to lay some groundwork for your future. Finally, by the time we get to Halloween, you are in the mood for some much-needed fun, so get a great costume and get out of the house!
TAURUS: There’s lots of intense energy in your house of love and
romance in September. You might be late to work, or slow to finish projects because you are a bit distracted. You’re just not in the mood for anything too heavy duty at the moment, so relax and let it be. September 5 brings Mercury out of retrograde, which should feel like a big relief. By the middle to end of September, you might be paying the price for some of the fun you’ve been having, as work is starting to pile up. October continues to be a busy month for you socially. Remember that a bit of silence in your life will help to balance out all the social activities. The end of October brings some tricky aspects related to financial situations. Make sure everything is in writing.
GEMINI: The full moon in super sensitive Pisces on September 6 will
be lodged in your area of career matters. This occurs at the same time that hard working Mars goes into the dutiful sign of Virgo. This translates into a time when you need to press some flesh. Get out there and go after what you want. You have a tendency to fly here there and everywhere, but this is a time to keep your focus on what you are building for your future. On October 19 there is a new moon in your house of playmates. If you have a partner, make sure you both get out of any routines and do something different in your spare time. If single, you might be introduced to someone you really like!
CANCER: Hopefully you’ve taken advantage of all the opportunities
for change that occurred during the summer months. With the start of September, it’s time to get organized and pay attention to details. In the love department, you’re still encountering some drama. If someone isn’t treating you well, don’t settle for crumbs. October brings Jupiter into your house of recreation, so your social life is finally kicking off; be prepared to broaden your horizons. This coming year is going to be more delightful than you’ve had in a very long time. Rest up now! Five planets will be in Libra in October urging you to keep everything in balance. Stand in your truth if someone is trying to push you around.
LEO: With many planets in hardworking Virgo this September, you’ll be
pretty busy working on your various projects. You’ll see the fruits of your labor much sooner than expected if you keep your focus, especially around September 9-12. Keeping track of your finances is not your favorite thing, but work on keeping everything in balance so you don’t hit a roadblock in the coming months. The full moon on October 5 will bring all your financial matters to the surface. Just be grateful you did your homework in September. When it comes to your love life, you’re particularly charming around October 14.
VIRGO: You love to fix things, and you’ve spent most of the summer
doing just that. Take the weekend of September 15 off and for a change turn off the computer and stay off the cell phone. Get in touch with friends you haven’t made time for recently. Try not to get into an argument with someone around September 25. You don’t like being wrong, but in this case, it isn’t worth fighting over something that is actually rather petty. If you can plan for another getaway around October 1-3 go for it! There are four planets in partner-loving Libra this month, so if you’re single, you might meet someone around the new moon of October 19.
LIBRA: There’s a full moon on September 6, which will cause you to
repair something that needs to be fixed. It might be a relationship, so be brave and do what needs to be done. You’re dealing with a lot of responsibilities, both personally and professionally until the end of September. By the time you get to September 22 you’ll feel like going on a spending spree as a way to relieve stress. Five planets will be in your sign in
90
September-October 2017
October. Of all the signs in the zodiac, you’re going through more personal changes than most. If born between October 9-15, be patient. You’re most certainly going through some pretty revolutionary changes and this is a good thing!
SCORPIO: You’re always a bit intense, and this September has you in
a very fiery and dramatic mood. If you’ve been thinking of ending a relationship, just listen to your intuition. If someone has been asking you to give more than you reasonably can, just tell them to back off. By September 19 this situation will improve significantly. During the month of October, you would be well advised to regroup and regenerate. Jupiter the planet of good fortune heads off for your sign on October 10 bringing you some well-deserved good luck. The end of October should bring some potent changes for the better.
SAGITTARIUS: During the summer months, you were extremely busy
with work, but the good news is that during the weekend of September 15, you should be feeling a lot less pressure. This would be a great time to escape and have some fun. Any snafus you’ve been dealing with will start to get resolved by the end of September. October 19 brings a new moon in the area of relationships. If single, you want to get out there and mingle. Schedule any important meetings or decisions around October 29. If it’s time to ask for a bonus or raise, you should have a positive outcome if you wait until the end of October.
CAPRICORN: Finally, a new and entirely bright pathway is opening up
for you this September. You’ve been more than ready for this, and the transformation could be beyond your wildest expectations. If you need to get away, try to plan something the weekend of September 15. At the end of September, you might be tempted to do something drastic. Maybe just a new haircut, or a move across the country… whatever it is, go for it! The aspects are indicating caution between October 8-11 when it comes to money. Don’t loan money to anyone unless you’re sure you’ll get it back.
AQUARIUS: If you’ve had a lot of unwelcomed drama in your life lately,
it’s about to get cleared up around September 5 when Mercury goes direct. Friends and family seem to be making a lot of demands on you around September 12-13. Don’t agree to being the person in charge of everything if you’re not up for it. Give yourself permission to say no, which is not the easiest thing for an Aquarian to do. Keep your eyes on a new and exciting work project in October. The full moon on October 5 will illuminate everything having to do with your life purpose. Don’t be shy or passive. Move towards anything that excites you.
PISCES: The full moon will be in Pisces on September 6, and it teams up
with Mercury. Someone is bringing you some unexpected news, and it looks like something you have been wishing for. After a rather hectic summer, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Try not to get too flustered around September 28. Not the easiest of days for anyone, so just lay low. October 1-3 is a wonderful time to hang out with people who make you laugh. You’ve been running around in circles for the last few months but by the end of October you can finally put your feet up and relax. You’ve done a great job of getting everything accomplished that was on your list, so time to regroup and rest.
