WHERE YOU LIVE
‘‘
My wife and I had John Huryn build two homes for us in Vero Beach – one on the ocean at Windsor and one on Painted Bunting Lane in Riomar. We could not have been more pleased with the quality of workmanship, the attention to detail, and the on-time completion of each home. However, what we value most is the fact the John and his company stand behind the product they deliver.

Welcome to Our Winter Wonderland!
As we welcome back our seasonal residents, the quiet streets of Vero Beach come to life as we start to celebrate our holiday season. We are very fortunate to live in a community with so many opportunities to attend the best theatre, art exhibits, and shows. As we “wrap” up this year, our gift in every issue of Portfolio is to inspire you to live the life you dream of. My goal has always been to capture the beauty that surrounds us daily and portray it with breathtaking photography that awakens your inner spirit. Our team of Portfolio photographers aren’t your average point-and-shooters, they truly have a passion for the art they capture through the lens of their cameras. I feel very fortunate to have their images showcased in each issue of Portfolio. We all absolutely love what we do and we hope that it shows! This Thanksgiving, we are feeling exceptionally thankful that Hurricane Matthew did not come to visit us in Vero Beach. Our community rallied together with love and support for one another which is what makes this town so exceptionally special. I hope that as season gets a little hectic, we will remember to be kind always. Life is art. Wherever you go in our community, to the beaches, out west, downtown…there is always something beautiful to see. Enjoy this photographic illustration of artistic images as we celebrate our winter wonderland on the Treasure Coast. It is rich in beauty everywhere!

Joe Semkow has a unique eye for photography. He is self-taught and truly has a passion for his craft. Joe lives every day like it’s a new adventure. He’s a dreamer, a wanderer, but he is far from lost. He continues to seek new adventures in new places. He finds peace in quiet spaces and captures these rare moments through the lens of his camera. Joe’s photos have depth and evoke feelings. To Joe, photography is all about capturing every day beauty, creating something really remarkable, and saving it forever. Over the past three years, he has taken pictures simply because it offers him an escape from the daily stresses of life. He never imagined that in such a short time, his images would reach people all over the country. He is honored and humbled that people love his pictures of life. Joe’s mantra is to always remember that life is about the journey, not the destination. @semkow116, InfiniteCaptures.com (407) 242-5117
Twyla Jones recently moved to Florida with her fiancé and their two sons after growing up running around the woods and fields of Kansas. She has a degree in human biology but shifted her focus to photographing human connection instead. She’s obsessed with beautiful light and looks for magic everywhere. Twyla’s focus is on creating environments that foster meaningful connections between her subjects. It is her desire to create photographs that do more than serve as proof that you existed; she wants to show that you lived passionately and loved madly. She enjoys sharing the way she sees beauty with other photographers and helps others find the confidence they need to create meaningful artwork for both themselves and their clients. @somethingrad, twylajonesphotography, twylajones.com, (620) 404-8880
ABOUT OUR TRIBE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS
a
Lyndsay Cunningham is a Vero Beach native that has always had a passion for horses and photography. Throughout her life, she has traveled the country as an upper level 3-Day event rider (similar to a triathlon) with her horses. After high school, she moved to Boston to train with a well-known rider. Her days were spent riding and training, and at night she took classes at Boston University. This is where her passion for photography came to life. She took an evening course with John Robaton, a National Geographic photographer. He taught her the basics of the camera and how to manipulate photos in the development process inside a dark room. With the advent of new digital technology, Lyndsay now uses her Canon Rebel T5i and Sony a6000 to document the outdoors, family, farm life, sea life, and all that Mother Nature has to offer! Lyndsay is thrilled to be a part of our Portfolio family and she’s excited about our readers being a part of her photography journey! @Lyndsay_Cunningham _photography, lyndsaycunninghamphotography.com, (772) 538-3772

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” ~salvador dali Photography is an art of observation, a story without words. A great photographer finds something interesting in ordinary places. It’s not so much about what you observe, but what you capture through your lens and guide others to see. Photographs are timeless. They are a great reminder of the little things in life, long after you have forgotten them. This issue is dedicated to all of my photographers, past and present, who help make Portfolio the best it can be. Their images inspire me every day. I hope you enjoy this pictographic illustration of their work. Visit Portfolio-VeroBeach.com to view their online galleries to see more.

T
he 2016 season has been an exciting one for sea turtles in Indian River County, to say the least. Vero Beach and surrounding areas experienced a record year of nesting by loggerhead turtles. The city also participated in the new Turtle Friendly Business program, and the Indian River County sea turtle program was able to expand its volunteer and educational opportunities through sea turtle presentations for fifth graders across the county, and also offered free public Turtle Digs. By Kendra Cope, Sea Turtle Coordinator/Environmental Specialist, Indian River County Public Works
Turtle Friendly Business Program These businesses voluntarily committed to protect and conserve sea turtles through education, promoting clean and natural beaches, and eliminating artificial lights from the beachfront area. The following businesses personalized their conservation efforts by creating educational materials, implementing blackout shades in guest rooms, and offering weekly sea turtle presentations. During July and August, local residents and guests watch the sea turtle team evaluate an already hatched nest, and hear a presentation on local sea turtle protection efforts. Fish, Fishermen Welcome Milder Temperatures Bring on the fall season and cooler weather. It’s been a long hot summer and this change of weather is more than welcome. From the fish to the fisherman, all are relieved for dropping temps in the air and water. This time of year, the water begins to clear up and the fish start moving around. The pompano will begin to show on the beaches, along with bluefish, snook, and whiting. It’s a great time for a surfcasting rod, beach chair, six pack, and sand spike. In the lagoon, many fish will be active and feeding to store up for winter. Snook, trout, redfish, and a few tarpon will be quite active before the temperature drops too much. Remember to catch and release as much as possible, and keep our waters clean. Tight lines! To book a charter, call Capt. Christian Yergens at 772-643-2735 or visit CNYOnTheFly.com. 38

Veteran’s Day
A Day to Honor and Remember
M
ost are familiar with the Vietnam War, but few know that our government sent many doctors there to take care of Vietnamese civilians and improve medical care. From 1968 to 1969, following the completion of his internship at the University of Alabama Medical School, Dr. Sheldon Kushner was sent to Vinh Long, Vietnam, a town of 40,000 people on the Mekong River, southwest of Saigon. A retired gynecologist who practiced in Vero Beach, Dr. Kushner became a trauma surgeon for the Military Provincial Health Assistance Program at age 26 and performed a variety of surgical procedures in an old hospital built by the French. As part of the MILPHAP team, his workload was five to seven procedures in a 12-hour day. The crushing schedule of 200 surgeries a month brought on sickness, weight loss, and once home, a realization that he was suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, a common affliction of wartime service. Through letters and reel-to-reel tapes he sent to his wife, Dr. Kushner revealed his concerns about his patients and expressed his emotions about the war and its devastating effects. “The war is raging at a fantastic pace. I see the results of it every day and we are working ourselves into exhaustion. Believe me, even the emergency room in Birmingham never even approached this.” Telling his story was a catharsis. The team of three doctors, including Dr. Kushner, made triage decisions every day; corpsmen treated non-life-threatening injuries, while the doctors immediately used surgery to help those considered to have a chance if treated, all the while knowing they didn’t have the best equipment or enough 40

supplies. They knew their limits and often employed ingenious methods to treat patients in an environment where cultural differences sometimes clashed with modern medicine. “I saw more people die in two weeks than I saw during my entire medical school and internship period,” Dr. Kushner said. He claimed his MILPHAP experience made him a better doctor. A case that stands out in Dr. Kushner’s mind was that of 7-year-old Loc. His mother carried him into the hospital, his legs mangled. Dr. Kushner performed two above-the-knee amputations. With surgery and antibiotics, Loc lived, but he required additional surgeries. “The Navy Seabees built him a wheelchair and we were able to provide him with artificial legs. He was able to walk with them with the help of crutches,” Dr. Kushner explained. “Loc’s mother brought him to the hospital to see me from time to time.” Dr. Kushner is proud of his team’s service. “We did a lot of surgery, saving a lot of people’s lives, and filling a great humanitarian need.” By Dr. Mary Ingui Freelance Writer

Life is Art
Making a house a home with art.
I
think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Your grocery list. The food you make. Your writing. The way you feel. LIFE is art. I also believe that art can make a house a home. Don’t worry if the colors match your furniture or rugs. Buy what you like; what moves you. Remember this: A traditional interior doesn’t require traditional artwork. A show-stopping contemporary piece can make an impressive statement! Think outside the box. Just be open! Another idea is to display your child’s artwork. It shows them their creative efforts are valued and it builds their confidence. I grew up in a house 42
November-December 2016
full of art. My parents were artists and they hung our drawings throughout our home and taught us the importance of living a life of art. Also remember that art comes in all shapes and sizes. It might be a bowl of sea glass that you picked up on a beach walk, or a batch of sunflowers you grew in your garden. In Vero Beach, we are fortunate to have numerous artists, galleries, art shows and art events. Take a tour of an artists’ home or studio. Buy local, from an artist you can meet and talk to. The truth is, art is indispensable. Art gives us meaning. Art helps us understand our world. By Cindy O’Dare www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Medicine as Art
Applying science and nature for individually tailored treatment.
I
n our modern age of technical innovation, precision imaging, surgical robotics, and pharmaceutical chemistry, the figurative scale that weighs medicine as art or science tips ever more heavily in favor of science. Many experts believe that medicine is strictly science, based solely on research, standards of care, and evidence based protocols. Others argue that the practice of medicine is art, and the application of this science requires principles that extend far beyond the laboratory. Therese Southgate, MD, former senior editor of the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association, illustrates beautifully the parallels between medicine and art, “First, they share a common goal: to complete what nature has not. Second, they have a common substrate, the physical, visible world of matter. More significant, however, are the similar qualities of mind, body, and spirit demanded of the practitioners of each, painter and physician. Chief among them is an eye: the ability not only to observe, but to observe keenly—to ferret out the tiny detail from the jumble of facts, lines, colors— the tiny detail that unlocks a painting or a patient’s predicament…medicine is itself an art. It is an art of doing, and if that is so, it must employ the finest tools available—not just the finest in science and technology, but the finest in the knowledge, skills, and character of the physician.” Scientific medical knowledge and training are required to diagnose disease and choose the best treatment, but they are often not enough to render successful patient outcomes. When humanistic qualities are present in the physician, the delivery of the science of medicine tends to be optimally effective. The art of caring and comfort, genuine concern, sympathy/empathy, compassion, and assurance help patients trust medical recommendations and encourage better compliance with treatment. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine are regarded as ancient medical arts. In practice, we marvel at the mystery of qi, yin and yang, and the five
elements. We seek to understand the demonstration of the laws of nature in the patient’s symptoms. We honor each patient’s uniqueness, knowing that one person’s pain or illness is different from the next and requires individually tailored treatment. The practitioner-patient relationship is a meaningful and collaborative process which encourages improvement in the patient’s health. Albert Einstein said it best, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom his emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.” By Angela King, AP, DOM Angela King is an Acupuncture Physician and Doctor of Oriental Medicine at Indian River Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. The Climb
T
here we were, 380 feet above the canyon floor, with only the safety of our harnesses, a few carabineers, and spring-loaded camelots. Some people regard rock climbing Photo by Erin Hu as a daredevil sport, another thrill fix for the adrenaline gourmand. It is, however, quite the opposite. There’s a saying amongst the climbing community that reinforces this: “If you’re having an adrenaline rush on the rock, you’re doing something wrong.” Climbing is a very peaceful sport, one that’s meant to challenge you in ways you never thought possible. Physically, it’s enormously demanding; climbers must sometimes suspend all of their body weight on just their fingertips, or jam their hands into sharp granite cracks to hang on. Psychologically, it’s a challenge like no other; being 35 stories high and having to put your trust in your gear, and your partner, can be one of the most difficult mental challenges to overcome. It’s these things that make climbing such an appealing sport to some people, especially myself. The thought that there’s practically no limit to how much you can improve your physical and mental strength was what captivated me the most.
46
November-December 2016
If you’ve ever seen the photos of climbers’ hands bloodied and torn apart, or videos of Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell conquering the Dawn Wall on El Capitan, while gutturally moaning in agony as they clutch onto razor sharp pieces of granite, you might ask yourself, “How can this be enjoyable?” The challenge is what makes climbing fun. Dealing with the setbacks, torn fingers, and bloody knuckles: that’s what makes it an adventure. It can be hard to understand why putting yourself through something that is at times, quite painful, is worth it at all. One of the greatest feelings one can have is surmounting a seemingly insurmountable obstacle; looking at a new climb and saying, “I could never do that,” and then after several weeks of hard work and practice, finally completing it. That’s what drives every climber, and ultimately, every person, to keep pushing themselves to their limits, only to find that their limits have no boundary. TRAIL MIX
F
ood is art. I have a passion for food and I truly believe this. Today, food must be irresistibly delicious and visually appealing as well. The better looking the meal, the more tempted we are to buy it. Food is fuel. What you put in your body is what fuels you for the day to come. Trail To Emily’s is my way of combining both aspects: art + fuel. My wholesome, healthy, and guilt-free trail mix is something I am so proud to be a part of. From the perfect smoothie topping (my personal favorite), to a homemade mix-in, Trail To Emily’s does it all. My trail mix contains hemp seeds, apple chips, banana chips, cacao nibs, carob chips, goji berries, mulberries, sliced almonds, unsweetened coconut, and pumpkin seeds, all of which are in their purest form, no added sugars or oils. Providing a balance of protein, fiber, fats and carbohydrates, Trail to Emily’s does all of which in a single serving. I created this trail mix so I could indulge in a satisfying, guilt-free mix, without unnecessary oils and sugars. My friends were constantly telling me to sell it, but I didn’t think much of it. Then, one lazy summer day, I made an Instagram account for Trail To Emily’s and it took off! The competition may be cheaper, but when you compare the combination of ingredients and taste, Trail to Emily’s will blow away the competition! Not only is it a beautiful mix that can make any smoothie bowl look irresistible, it’s also dangerously delicious and addicting. By Emily Long @TrailToEmilys and at Facebook.com/Trail-To-Emilys 48

ohn Stringer and Caesar Mistretta opened the doors of J.M. Stringer Gallery in Vero Beach in 2011. Five years later, they continue to make positive waves. Notes of Vivaldi float through the air as you step into the gallery, located along Ocean Drive. A carefully curated selection of paintings and sculpture by the gallery’s family of award-winning representational artists sit against a backdrop of the soft, tropical shades of Vero. Stringer and Mistretta represent more than 20 established and emerging artists, hailing from our own backyard to overseas. They have also curated a collection of 19thand early 20th-century American, British, and Continental paintings. “We’re thrilled to announce that Stephanie Amato, Peter Layne Arguimbau, Jim McVicker, and Luke Steadman will be joining the respected roster of artists we’ve cultivated over the years,” says Stringer. The gallery’s season-opening exhibition, Old Friends, New Faces, celebrates the recent work of all their fine artists. The discerning eye that was instrumental in building the sophisticated yet friendly art oasis that is the J.M. Stringer Gallery has carried over into their newest venture, “J.M. Stringer - Private Collection.” The space features a collection of antique paintings, furniture, crystal, porcelain, and objets d’art—all handpicked by the duo to provide distinctive, elegant design elements to any home. That dedication to helping people discover and celebrate their own personal taste, combined with his affection for Vero Beach, is what inspired Stringer to embark on yet another adventure—becoming a Florida REALTOR®. “Eight years ago, after my very first visit to Vero, I purchased my home. I’ve never regretted that decision once,” says Stringer. “Over the years, many of my friends, clients and colleagues have visited and quickly seen what 54

makes Vero special. I realized that understanding people’s personal lifestyles gave me the natural qualities needed in a real estate agent.” In 2014, Stringer joined Alex MacWilliam Real Estate, Inc. His goal is to make the daunting experience of buying and selling a home as stress-free as possible. Stringer and Mistretta are also actively involved in a variety of local organizations striving to make Vero Beach an even better place to live, work, and play. Mistretta is an influential member of the Oceanside Business Association and Vero’s Beachside Retailers. Additionally, he serves as a board member of the Cultural Council of Indian River County. allet Vero Beach, our region’s only professional ballet company was founded in 2013. In just a few seasons, the company has made a name for itself amidst Vero’s robust arts scene. Artistic Director Adam Schnell strives to make dance accessible, while keeping artistic quality high. The company regularly performs a mix of masterworks and homegrown choreography. Collaborating with Vero’s cultural institutions, The Vero Beach Museum of Art and Riverside Theatre, has thrust Ballet Vero Beach into the local spotlight. Additionally, the company’s Ticket Donation Program and forthcoming free Student Matinee Series allow the organization to reach a broad swath of the community. Schnell enjoyed a successful professional dance career prior to moving to Vero Beach in 2009. The fact that he spent time performing in and out of traditional ballet companies gives Ballet Vero Beach a fresh take on ballet. Vero will be getting a spectacular dose of Ballet Vero Beach’s unique nature when the company’s latest project comes to fruition. Scheduled to premiere in December 2017, Ballet Vero Beach is hoping that Nutcracker on the Indian River will cement the young troupe’s place in the area’s cultural fabric. Set in 1919, the year Vero was founded, the production will retain all the whimsy and magic of traditional Nutcracker productions, but instead of a candy palace, the ballet’s young heroine will dream of the shores of the Indian River Lagoon and be entertained by all manner of local flora and fauna. Nutcracker on the Indian River has been in development for some time, but to introduce the public to the concept, the company has planned two unique fundraising events for this holiday season. Natural Stone A Work of Art
J
ust like fine art, every piece of stone created in nature is unique. Using natural stone in your home allows you to create your very own masterpiece. It’s an abundant resource that comes from all over the world, offering an infinite selection of types, colors, and patterns. Granite, marble, and quartzite are among the most common varieties. Choosing the right stone to create your design is important. Granite is an extremely hard stone, only inferior to diamonds and a few other gems. It is frequently used on countertops, fireplaces and staircases. It is also suitable to use on exterior applications, such as building facades and fountains. It is heat and scratch resistant. Granite typically has a consistent pattern, but occasionally you will find some interesting quartz formations in the material. Marble is a softer stone. You will often hear people say that it’s not suitable for kitchens or high traffic areas, but the Italians have been using it in their homes and restaurants for centuries. While marble can be susceptible to staining due to its porosity, it is that very reason that makes it is easier to remove stains. Marble is highly sought after for its elegant veining and pure white backgrounds. Quartzite is another popular natural stone due to its strength and durability. Interior designers have fallen in love with it because of the stone’s pleasing color palate. The most popular colors are cream, grey, pastel green, sky blue, and turquoise. The color is determined by the minerals found in the ground in the area where it was formed. The pattern of the stone ranges from soft veining to vibrant paint thrown on a canvas.

Weightless Winter Pearls
W
onderful news for Florida fashion: Lavender and violets have returned this winter. The transition into jewel tones for fall and winter is a welcome one. This color can be so flattering, the perfect color to wear to lift our spirits and enhance our creativity. Don’t worry about what to pair it with. There are so many possibilities. Teal and aquamarine shades, or our soft pastels all mix well. Natural tones and white work, too. Blacks, blues and even a red with some blue in it can jazz your wardrobe up. Lovely lavender can be worn with both silver and gold jewelry. This season, we’re happy to introduce our rhythm necklaces, in both silver and gold. These pieces are made right here on Royal Palm Pointe in our studio at A Bead Above. Strung with love and cultured pearls cultured pearls in white, 62

peach, black peacock, or brilliant bronze. We also make them with natural quartz crystals, amethyst, turquoise, and apatite. It’s essentially weightless and will travel very well. They’re beautiful worn long, by themselves, or layered with pearl strands. Although they’re available in two lengths, short 16.5 inches and 36 inches, our favorite is the longer one. Wear it long, wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet, or doubled for a shorter look. The color combinations and versatility of this contemporary design, coupled with its affordability, make it a favorite here.

Celebrate Beauty This Holiday Season
T
he holidays are upon us! What better opportunity to gather with friends and family than the holiday season? This is the time to look your absolute best for all the parties, charities, festivities, and weddings you will be attending this season. During this celebratory time, clear communication with your team of beauty professionals enhances your experience. When it comes to professional hair, skin and makeup services for special events, time is of the essence. Reserving your services at least six weeks in advance will eliminate the chances for stress, which creates premature aging. Facial treatments one week before your makeup application not only draw out dead skin cells and trapped impurities, but produce clean, radiant skin which is a holiday must. Hair and makeup trial runs are staples for your holiday debut. Trial runs allow you to “test drive your new hair or airbrush makeup application. Bringing photos of the theme, your dress, and what you want your hair and makeup to look like are a great way to communicate with the artists. This simple action assists artists, who are visual, to create the look that is most suitable for your facial structure and personal style. Eminence Hair Design, conveniently located 20 minutes north of Vero Beach at 967-C Sebastian Blvd. in Sebastian, proudly serves guests like royalty. With careful consideration to each hair and skin care need, guests acquire a renewed sense of self. Having a professional salon experience with passionate hair artists and skin specialists makes all the difference. While walk-ins

Franke Goes to Hollywood
Holiday Greetings, Eastsiders!
I
t’s been an exciting time here in Los Angeles, and no, I’m not talking about the “Brangelexit.” I was lucky enough to attend the 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. It’s such a surreal and humbling feeling to once again be surrounded by the most talented people in the industry. This year was a major milestone for some of the winners. I was most excited for Kate McKinnon, who brought home the first Emmy for an Saturday Night Live actor in a major acting category; Sarah Paulson for her role in “The People v. O.J. Simpson;” and Ben Mendelsohn for his supporting role on Bloodline (big shout-out to Moorings Village & Spa in Islamorada where it’s filmed). While it won’t be a white Christmas for either of us, we can certainly look forward to shopping, holiday parties, and lavish palm trees covered in lights. What’s the best part about holiday time off? VACATION TIME! Consider a holiday trip to L.A. and use the HOPPER app to book your ticket now. Warning to my loved ones, everyone is getting subscription boxes this holiday season. Here are a few of this year’s hottest boxes: Sock Fancy sends you a pair of stylish and quirky socks every month. High quality, whimsical socks are sure to cause numerous slides down the hallway, Tom Cruise style. Loot Crate sends you an awesome mystery box every month filled with nerdy goodies. It’s perfect for any pop culture lover or gamer on your list. Last but not least, POPSUGAR is a monthly lifestyle subscription box for women. Each month, they send a fabulous mix of beauty, fashion, food, fitness, home, and irresistible items. LALA Land has stepped up its already remarkable restaurant and food game. Congratulations to Vero Beach local Jonathan Strader on his huge success out here in L.A., Hatchet Hall and the newly award winning Old Man Bar at Hatchet Hall. Old Man Bar has just been named one of Playboy’s Best New Bars 2016. My restaurant musts this holiday season: Gwen, The Cannibal, Otium L.A., Nighthawk, Howlin’ Rays, Georgie, and Wolf.
Warmest Wishes, Xoxo, Ashley Franke

Financial Investing Made Simple
W
e recently had the opportunity to sit down with Trent Leyda and Mike Kanner of the Leyda Kanner Group at Morgan Stanley. The business of wealth management seems to be one of those businesses where everyone creates a personal, biased opinion. The Leyda Kanner Group thrives by taking the complicated and making it easy to understand and execute. These two individuals focus on one goal: making the client’s life better. Kanner points out that this can mean many things: reducing debt, protecting cash-flow, and understanding the fees you are paying.
“We’ve built our business on giving sound advice and the feedback from our clients has never been better,” says Trent Leyda. If you ask any financial advisor their philosophy you get similar comments like, “We use a holistic approach, and we put the client first.” However, spend an hour listening to Kanner and Leyda discuss their approach to investing and you get a sense that their primary concern is putting you, the client, in the best possible position. The Leyda Kanner Group at Morgan Stanley is one of those teams you want on your side. These financial advisors are super charged, focused on business, and selfless in making things happen. These busy guys have full schedules, but as that saying goes “You always want to be with the person that is the busiest in their profession.” Call Emily or Sheila at (772) 234-1834 to schedule an appointment.

Dreams Do Come True In 2007, Red Bull hosted the first Illume Image Quest in search of the world’s best action sports photography and photographers. I was in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I first saw this traveling art gallery. I must have visited it four or five times in awe of every photo, reading and soaking in every caption, and studying the composition of the images. It became my dream and goal to one day become an Illume photographer. Ten years later, this image of Blake Speir jumping off the Sebastian Inlet Jetty has made it to the top 25 finalists in the Red Bull Illume lifestyle category. Selected out of 34,624 photo submissions from 5,645 photographers in 120 countries around the world, and judged by 53 of the best photo editors, the Illume has only been created four times now since 2007. It is considered to be the most prestigious photography event in all of action sports and is more competitive than landing a cover shot of any major magazine within the sports industry. I’m greatly honored and blessed with this opportunity to have my name and work displayed with the rest of these artists. It’s unique that Sebastian Inlet and our local grom, Blake Speir, get the chance to travel the world in this limited edition coffee table book, The 2016 Red Bull Illume, giving our surf break even more bragging rights throughout the world. To see more of this gallery and the work displayed within it, visit RedBullIllume.com.

Get Rooted
Save a tree. Create a Park. Grow a Community.
‘‘
It is vain to dream of a wildness distant from ourselves. There is none such. It is the bog in our brains and bowels, the primitive vigor of Nature in us, that inspires that dream. HENRY DAVID THOREAU, JOURNAL, AUGUST 30, 1856
LIVING SYMBOLS OF VERO BEACH HISTORY
A
s days shorten and we say farewell to summer’s heat, we start a fresh season joining families and friends to renew our roots, our community, and nature. We are also renewing our efforts to preserve the amazing banyan trees on Dr. W. H. Humiston’s historic homestead in McAnsh Park (corner of Avalon and 20th Street). In honor of Dr. Humiston and his mission to beautify our community, we are resuming our campaign to purchase this historic and beautiful property for a park before it’s too late. Currently, the property is for sale and we have heard that there are plans to rezone it for commercial development. That would be the end of these majestic trees and the memories they evoke. It was 1931 when local icon, Waldo Sexton, brought 25 new banyan trees to Vero Beach, according to Pam Cooper, supervisor of the Indian River County Archive Center and Geneology Department. Waldo planted six trees in Pocahontas Park, 16 on the parkway at 21st Street and 20th Avenue, and three on Dr. Humiston’s homestead. How fitting, since Dr. Humiston organized Vero’s Beautification Society in 1924 with the goal of improving the city by planting trees and shrubs. Membership was open to all, and members could contribute either by working on the annual Beautification Day, or donating to support the tree planting. Working members were expected to report to work in the early morning, and work ended only when the day’s project was completed. The Women’s Club prepared a hot lunch for everyone, and sometimes the high school band provided musical accompaniment. Beautification Day was suspended in 1942 due to the war, and Dr. Humiston passed on the next year at age 89. In 1950, Beautification Day www.portfolio-verobeach.com
resumed under Herschel Auxier’s leadership, devoted to improving the home and civic life of Vero by planting and caring for trees. This tradition is celebrated today, with Vero’s annual tree planting as a Tree City USA. In fact, Vero Beach has been a Tree City for 35 years (since 1981), a record exceeding all but six Florida cities. Dr. Humiston’s house is gone now, but the beautiful banyan giants remain to remind us of our roots and inspire our children’s imagination. Our mission is to raise funds to buy the property and make it a park in honor of Dr. Humiston. We need your help and financial support. All donations received by the Florida Conservancy, a local 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, will go directly to the purchase of the Humiston homestead, which will become a park for all to enjoy. Bow Wow Bark N Brew Fest
As much for people as it is for dogs.
A
h, Vero Beach! Pristine beaches, endless sunshine and something for everyone from upscale shopping and dining to cultural arts and outdoor activities. But wait! What about our canine companions? That was the question a small handful of city residents asked when the ‘No Dogs Allowed’ signs were posted everywhere around town. And it was the motivating factor behind the procurement of a new, fully fenced dog park dedicated to our fun loving furry friends, both big and small. Today, the park, completely funded by community donations and overseen by a handful of volunteer directors has become one of the busiest parks in Indian River County. On Sunday, November 13, the Vero Beach Dog Park will host its 3rd Annual Fundraiser, The Bow Wow Bark N Brew Fest. A fun-filled day of music, food and doggie activities, this event promises to be even bigger and better than last year, drawing dog-loving families from all over Indian River County. From sampling fantastic food and draft beers to bopping to the sounds of the ever-popular Collins & Company Band, there will be plenty of activities throughout the day for people and pooches alike. So come join the activities or bring a lawn chair, sit back and watch the doggies go by. For more information, visit www.verobeachdogpark.org or call Jill Jones at (772) 473-5902. Holiday Pet Safety
Tips for keeping your four legged friends safe this holiday season.
D
r. Marjorie and I thank you for allowing us to care for your pets and wish you all a very happy holiday season! Here are some tips for keeping your four legged family member healthy and safe this holiday season. Christmas hazards are plentiful. Keep your family of fur babies safe by being mindful of the following: • Electrical cords are especially attractive to younger pets and can result in mouth burns and worse. • Kittens love to climb trees, including Christmas trees. Prevent your kitten’s access to low hanging limbs or your tree might come tumbling down! • Shiny ornaments are attractive to both dogs and cats alike. Again, be sure to trim those lower branches to prevent chewing and the ingestion of metals and substances that are rough on their digestive system, and may need to be extracted. Tinsel is an irritant to their tummies and should be avoided at all costs. • Chocolate is toxic to dogs and can cause serious distress. Do not share it, even in small amounts. • Sharing leftovers of table food may seem like an act of love, but usually results in upset tummies and even diarrhea. Restrict those holiday recipes to the humans in your family and be sure to only feed your pet certified pet food and treats. • Parties and loud noise can be frightening to pets. Keep them away from the commotion as much as possible as you celebrate this season and be sure to provide adequate water and food. • Children and young pets require supervision, especially during the holidays with so many new and unique attractions vying for their attention. Do not leave them together unattended. • The gift of a pet is wonderful! If you’re thinking of giving a pet as a gift this holiday season, be sure to match the personality of the pet with the lifestyle of your family. Your research will pay off, especially in the later years. A harmonious relationship will be beneficial to you and your pet. Also, be sure to schedule an exam and vaccinations as soon as possible. From all of us at Indian River Animal Hospital, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

BEACH SAFETY
BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.
beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day.
RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your
LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life
in the stars
We can all let out a collective sigh of relief that November brings the end of the election season. With Thanksgiving around the corner, it would be wise to remember all the things we are grateful for. The full moon on Nov. 14 makes everything more intense, and intensity can be a good thing, so plan for a nice surprise. For every sign in the Zodiac, the month of December is one of the calmest and happiest we’ve had in a long time. Happy Holidays! ARIES: There’s never a dull moment for you in November, as Venus, the sun, and Mercury will pass through the sign of Sagittarius, your fire sign cousin. Around Nov. 4, you might feel as if you’ve had a bit of financial bad luck, but it won’t last long. By the time you get to mid December, you’ll be wanting to spend money on those you love. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are wonderful, filled with lots of joy and happiness. Just be cautious on New Year’s Eve. If you go to a party, make sure someone else is the designated driver.
SCORPIO: Your intuition will be super strong around Nov. 19. If you’ve met someone you really like, don’t be afraid to let them know how you feel. By the end of November, you will be the one everyone turns to for relationship advice. The holidays will be super great for you. When you love someone, you are all in, and by Christmas you might feel as if all your dreams are coming true with this person. Stay home on New Year’s Eve, and enjoy having a nice quiet evening as you usher in 2017.
TAURUS: Be prepared to be happy in November. Your ruling planet is Venus, the planet of love, and Venus will be in earthy Capricorn on Nov. 11, just in time for the holidays. You might even have someone you once loved show up again. The entire month of December has you feeling as if you can’t wipe the smile off your face. You’ll have interesting visitors and gatherings, with Christmas being a high point with lots of good times with family and friends. Just be careful on New Year’s Eve. Not the greatest aspects that day, so lay low.
SAGITTARIUS: November is a great month for travel. You might even meet someone from a foreign country who rocks your world. If single, don’t let the distance be an issue. If already with a partner, this person could be someone who adds a spark to your professional life. Time for you to break your patterns and trust that having more adventures is good for you. Your ruling planet, Jupiter, is making sure your holidays are fantastic. With the only small rough patch arriving around Dec. 10, you are in a very auspicious beginning for the coming new year.
GEMINI: Your calendar will be chock full of parties this holiday season, as everyone is inviting you to their celebrations. Everyone will want you around for your quick wit and good humor. Financially speaking, November has you watching your pennies. By the end of the month, you might have to cut a financial tie with someone who is dragging you down. December is an abundant month for all Geminis. The only thing you have to watch out for is Mercury going retrograde on Dec. 20. This is your ruling planet so just double check all your communications and travel plans.
CAPRICORN: Romance is highlighted this November, especially right after the full moon on Nov. 14. You are more sentimental than usual because you truly feel loved. Taking the time to thank friends and family for all they’ve done for you would be a wise idea. Relax in December and feel all the good fortune and loving support coming your way. Don’t be surprised if you have some unexpected visitors around Christmas. When Mercury goes retrograde in your sign on Dec. 19, just remember to allow extra time for everything, just in case.
CANCER: November has you a little on edge as Venus gets into a difficult aspect with Neptune around the fourth. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your gut when making any big decisions. You are known for your incredible intuition, so please use it. Family means everything to all Cancerians, and this holiday season will be especially wonderful. You’ll have an exciting and surprising Christmas day, so enjoy! Basically all of December is awesome for you, however New Year’s Eve is a tricky one, so be careful.
AQUARIUS: Make sure your passport is up-to-date, because travel is the theme for the month of November. Mars, the planet of movement and action is in your sign starting Nov. 8, giving you the urge to take off. Around Nov. 24, a money issue might pull you down. Try to get some financial advice from someone you trust. The planet of love, Venus, enters your sign on Dec. 7 giving you the urge to mingle and socialize. You will be the life of the party and with the small exception of Mercury turning retrograde on Dec. 19, you are feeling quite blissful this Christmas season.
LEO: Try to get out of town and have a new adventure in November. You are so ready to do something that breaks your routine. Don’t rule out doing something quite courageous, like traveling to a foreign country because of a last-minute invitation. Mercury squares off with Neptune on Nov. 18 so be careful with any legal documents and big decisions. As long as you go slow, all will be well. Everything is fabulous in December. Just about every planet is putting you in a cheerful mood. You might have a surprise visitor around Dec. 10. When Mercury turns retrograde on Dec. 20, be prepared to chill out. This is not a good time to push things forward. VIRGO: You are always so sensible, and when you’re around others who are not, it gets on your nerves. Be prepared for some “interesting” interactions in November with people who are not as stable as you. By the end of the month, you may be needed to unravel someone’s financial mess. Try to do it with a smile, instead of passing judgment on others with far less organizational skills. December brings lots of reasons to celebrate with happy news to report regarding personal relationships and work situations. Outside of some tricky travel dates around Dec. 19, you are good to go. Just don’t get into a car with someone who has been drinking on New Year’s Eve.

LIBRA: All of November has you in a fun-loving mood. You will be charming and the life of every party. Romance is in the air, especially around Nov. 5. You might just go on an impulsive trip to a romantic destination. There is a tough aspect on Nov. 24, so don’t push your agenda on anyone. The heavens are bestowing lots of blessings upon you in December. In particular, Christmas will be just about perfect. It’s been a long time since you have felt this content in your personal life. Try not to overindulge on New Year’s Eve. Not a great day for anyone, so stay home and stay safe!
November-December 2016
PISCES: There are lots of planets in fire signs in November and since you are a water sign, you might feel more feisty than usual. Fire and water make steam, which can be great for romance, so if you have a partner, take them away for a fall getaway. December brings a well-deserved increase in the money department. All your hard work is really paying off and this financial success will continue into 2017. Slow down on New Year’s Eve and try not to drink to excess at any celebrations you may be attending. Or better yet, stay home and go over how grateful you are for all the blessings you received in 2016. You have worked hard and people are really recognizing your talent. Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
