Get Revved Up! This time of year is great for twisting the throttle and cruising along A1A. Whether you ride for the adrenaline rush, to recapture your youth, or just love the wind in your face on the open road, motorcycles have a certain wild freedom to them. They make you feel again. I really enjoyed compiling our motorcycle features in this issue; every story was unique and personable. I love the connections these bikes have had from one generation to the next, each one creating lasting memories for future family traditions. We hope you’ll think they’re special, too. March brings nesting sea turtles to our beaches again, and continues until the end of October. If you live or work on the ocean, please make sure all outside lighting is in compliance with local turtle ordinances so as not to disturb nesting. After playing on the beach, please remove any objects that may discourage nesting. Fill in holes and level sandcastles that could impede a turtle’s path to and from its nesting site. Be sure to use only red lens flashlights on nighttime beach walks during turtle season. ANY light has a big impact on the future of our sea turtles. These are all little things we can all do that will make a big difference! I hope you love reading our youngest photographer’s story on Cuba in this issue. Quinn Hiaasen is an amazing high school student who not only captures stunning, unique photographs of nature and life, but he is such a great writer, too. His beautiful story on Cuba is a humble reminder of how lucky we are to live where we do with the freedoms we have. My mission at Portfolio has always been to inspire you, to reawaken your inner child, to encourage you to follow your passions and to simply LIVE today! For some, tomorrow never arrives. There are so many things to see and do here! Our community is really special. Whenever you can, please remember to shop and support local businesses. Whether you are a motorcycle enthusiast or an enthusiastic motorcyclist, may your bike fever live on forever, and may you always have the wind in your face and warm sunshine on your back.

Lyndsay Cunningham is a Vero Beach native that has always had a passion for horses and photography. Throughout her life, she has traveled the country as an upper level 3-Day event rider (similar to a triathlon) with her horses. After high school, she moved to Boston to train with a well-known rider. Her days were spent riding and training, and at night she took classes at Boston University. This is where her passion for photography came to life. She took an evening
course with John Robaton, a National Geographic photographer. He taught her the basics of the camera and how to manipulate photos in the development process inside a dark room. With the advent of new digital technology, Lyndsay now uses her Canon to document the outdoors, family, farm life, sea life, and all that Mother Nature has to offer! You can follow her daily adventures on Instagram @Lyndsay_Cunningham or visit her horse farm here in Vero Beach. Lyndsay teaches riding lessons, travels to horse shows, and always has quality sport horses for sale. Visit www.highhopeseventing.com for more information. A Labor of Love As told by Santiago Ares
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the late 1960s. Since I was young, I’ve always been attracted to machines and motors. When I started riding bicycles, I would spend afternoons taking them apart, chopping parts and changing things. My mom would come to the garage and say, “Santiago, what happened to your new bike? We just got that for you!” One summer, I got into trouble at school and as punishment, my mom sent me to work the summer at my uncle’s garage business. It was probably one of the best summers of my life. I was 13 and I got to drive cars around, take engines apart, hang out with the regulars, eat delicious, greasy barbecue for lunch, and listen to all kinds of stories. After that, I bought my first motorcycle, a 1979 Honda XL75. I rode that until there was nothing left of it, then bought a dirt bike, which I rode whenever I had a chance, and also did some racing. When I was in my 20s, I moved to Los Angeles and lost interest in bikes for some reason. I started working in advertising, got busy, and moved with my wife, Naomi, to South America. After 5 years, we moved to Vero Beach, looking for a place to raise our son, Joaquin. For nearly 15 years I was uninterested in bikes, until I found a bike that I used to have in the 1980s on Ebay. I bought it with the idea to restore it. I really enjoy doing that, so I bought more tools, set up a shop, and started buying more bikes. One day, I sent a photo of a bike that I was working on to my good friend, Eduardo, in Buenos Aires. He asked me to restore one for him. When I shipped that bike, a friend of Eduardo’s asked me to restore another one, and another. While I was working on bikes, I created a website (32toOne.com) with a gallery of photos. Soon, I began to receive emails from all over the world, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, France, Japan, Canada, Belgium, South Africa, and more. People like me (having a midlife crisis) were looking for bikes that they used to ride back in the day. I have worked, built and shipped more than 60 bikes in the past five years. It’s been fun and I enjoy it, but it is a labor of love. Dealing with shipping, currency exchanges, bikes that have been sitting for years, it’s not for everybody. Every bike is an adventure; it’s like finding a treasure. Looking for bikes is fun. I’ll see a dark picture on Craigslist in the middle of the country of a bike covered. I contact the owner, send the money, and two months later, it arrives at my house. Most of the time, I’m lucky, sometimes I’m not. I think it is very important to have a hobby in life and to learn how to fix and build things. We have two hands for a reason. Handcraftsmanship is getting diluted by electronics and media, consuming a lot of time in our day. Today, I spend most of my time working in the kitchen of my restaurant, La Tabla, here in Vero Beach. I also race vintage motocross races, and when I have time, camp in Ocala and ride the trails with friends. I try to work on a couple of bikes per year for friends and clients. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

The journey is just as important as the destination. As told by Brian Cunningham I think motorcycling is something you either have an affinity for or you don’t. There’s no middle ground. For me, the allure was there from the first mini-bike ride in the fourth grade. I later graduated to dirt bikes, riding in the woods with friends. Two wheels was how we got around before any of us had earned our drivers licenses. Whether it’s off-road or on-road riding, there’s no better way to really get to know the lay of the land than on two wheels. There’s no way to be in closer contact with the landscape, the sounds, or the smells of your surroundings. Riding a coastal highway along the beach, to riding through mountains, deserts and pine forests, motorcycling puts you right there in the environment. Not unlike boating, most times the journey is just as important as the destination. The scenery, the weather, and the characters you meet along the way, that’s what makes the memories last. Also like boating, the more you travel by motorcycle, the more you learn about new places you would like to visit someday. One thing is certain: the adventure always starts as soon as you leave the driveway. There are so many scenic roads and cool destinations that somehow become more memorable on a bike than in a car. Some of my favorites
include New England in the fall, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Ortega Highway from Dana Point to Lake Elsinor, and of course, A1A down the coast of Florida. Brian Cunningham is the co-owner and general manager of Vero Marine Center, located on Royal Palm Pointe in Vero Beach. He has owned many different motorcycles throughout the years, but for the last two decades, it has been strictly Harley-Davidson. He currently owns a FLTRX Road Glide Custom.

Memories
with Motorcycles As told by Doug Buell My first memory of being on a motorcycle was at about five years old. My dad took me up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire, sitting on the tank of his Honda Scrambler 350. Other than brief encounters with friends’ mini bikes, it wasn’t until someone gave him a basket case BMW R-27 for his 40th birthday that there was a renewed interest in motorcycles in my family. It didn’t take long for my dad to get this bike running and he soon added a Steib S-250 sidecar, found in a barn near our home in Massachusetts. The only problem was that the R-27 couldn’t get out of its own way with the sidecar attached! My dad quickly found an R-60/2 to do the job. I have fond memories of my dad giving me rides around Marblehead in this rig. By age 16, I had a motorcycle learners permit, even before I had my license to drive a car. This was the best deal, as you didn’t need supervision, and with a dad into motorcycles and a garage full of them, I was off! Eventually, I got my license with a motorcycle endorsement, riding that R-27 for my test. The rest is history. I bought my first motorcycle, a Suzuki GSX550E, as a senior in high school. That led to a string of “crotch rockets” over the years that kept getting bigger and faster. Although I enjoyed the performance and appreciated the technology these bikes offered, I always liked coming home and taking the sidecar for a ride. It’s been in my family for more than 35 years, an heirloom of sorts, not to mention a well-remembered fixture around my hometown of Marblehead. My dad gave me the sidecar in 2004, and it’s been in Vero Beach ever since. Now, my children enjoy the thrill of the same rides my father used to give me. A year ago, I acquired a 1974 Triumph Bonneville 750 from an uncle after it collected dust in his garage for 15 years. After finding mice living in one of the mufflers, and only 7,500 original miles, it didn’t take much to get it running again. This bike is a treat to ride, has sparked my interest in motorcycles again, and has motivated me to ride more. With the addition of the Triumph, you might say I have a good collection of classic motorcycles started. There’s something special about old motorcycles; whether it’s the simplicity of the design, or even the smell, people are drawn to them. Although, I see a more modern bike in my future, I find myself spending more time looking at older bikes worthy of adding to my collection. Nevertheless, riding motorcycles is in my blood. Motorcycles have provided many great adventures and lasting memories I will cherish forever and share with my children. 18

The
Heaton Boys and Their Toys As told by George & Lee Heaton
Around these parts, Heaton Companies is typically associated with the spectacular Vero Beach Hotel and Spa, or two of the development company’s luxury residential communities, Tarpon Flats and Old Oak Lane. But motorcycles? Yep, the Heaton’s have quite a love for bikes, which has become as much of a business interest as a personal passion for George Heaton and his two sons, Lee and Linn. Lee and Linn turned their passion into business when they founded West Palm Beach-based “PowerSports” in 1994. Catering to all motorbike aficionados, their 14 franchised stores featured all manufacturers, including Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and several others. After 8 years and much success, they sold the company in 2002 to pursue other business. George was a huge motorbike enthusiast as a young boy, but didn’t begin to ride until much later in life. Motorcycling became a family affair after he rented three Harley-Davidson motorcycles for his sons and himself, 20
March-April 2016
and the three left on a 21-day trip along the California coast up to Whistler, British Columbia. “This was one of my most memorable family trips,” says George. Now, Lee is at it again, adding to the family’s diverse business portfolio after purchasing another motorcycle store in St. Augustine last September. When asked what he is most excited about, he says, “It’s fun to be in an industry where the consumer is truly passionate about the product. And Florida is one of the few states where you can ride 12 months out of the year.” Over the years, the Heaton’s have owned dozens of bikes and still enjoy riding them on the weekends. One of their favorites, however, is the 1931 Excelsior-Henderson Super X, seen in this photo (which the Excelsior Suite at the Vero Beach Hotel is named after.) Sounds like the Heaton’s found a match made in hog heaven! Photographed by Christine Rose Photography, Palm Beach based beauty, fashion and commercial photographer. It’s Never Too Late. As told by Bill Wetzel Michael Parks in “Then Came Bronson” led the life I wished to lead when I was 16, growing up in New Jersey. I followed his motorcycle adventures on TV in 1969, and, partly as a result, had no interest in continuing my education beyond prep school, but I went anyway. While looking for work following a failed year of college, I came across a gorgeous Kawasaki street bike for $750. Although I hadn’t any money and didn’t know a thing about motorcycles, I asked my folks if I could buy it. My mother, Kathleen Wetzel, the same dear lady who now frequently rides in a sidecar with me, told me to forget it. I did, more or less until four years ago, which was probably a good thing, as I was surely not mature enough back then to own one. Over the years, I often looked wistfully at passing motorcyclists, but never seriously considered buying a bike until after I settled in Florida in 1998. Occasional trips along Route 441 took me past a small shop in Holopaw run by Gene Langford. I fell in love with his collection of Ural motorcycles, the ones with the sidecars, which the Russians had been building since World War II when they copied a German BMW design. In 2012, with some money in my pocket, I stopped at Gene’s, saw the model I wanted, and bought it without taking a test ride – or even starting it up. Other than a brief ride many years earlier on my brother’s Yamaha, which ended in a wreck, I’d never been on a motorcycle, and I still didn’t have a license to ride one! One of my first rides on this new bike (2012 Ural Retro) was to Nick’s Family Restaurant on 20th Street, where I intended to surprise my mother with my new purchase. When she saw it and I explained that it was mine, she immediately said “It’s the smartest thing you’ve ever done.” I must agree completely. Now that I have this bike – and two others, a 2014 Royal Enfield Bullet 500, and a used 2002 BMW R1200C, I fully understand that a biker cannot

have too many bikes. As it is, the three bikes are just enough for when my two sons are in town, which leaves me “short” when any of my brothers are here. My schedule working on a drillship in the Gulf of Mexico allows me considerable free time - when I’m home. You’re likely to see me on the Ural running errands in town with my wife, Eileen; taking my granddaughter, Emily, to St. Anastasia School in Fort Pierce; or heading beachside to see “Mops,” my 90-year-old mother (who loves to be seen in her pink helmet). When not used by family, the other two bikes are for solo riding or trips with my friend, John Bardsley (who owns a Honda Shadow). I prefer them when I venture out into the hillier parts of the state. As to my youthful dreams... they’ve never gone away. Even at 63, the appeal is as strong as ever, so I ride every chance I get, regardless of the weather (mostly). I still lament the wasted years when I could’ve been riding. If I have anything to tell the readers who might be interested in motorcycles, but never bought one, it’s that it’s never too late to get started!

Revolutionary Times
As more Americans flood to Cuba, its people see hope for change.
J
ust as I was about to ask myself the age-old question, a young boy threw open the door of a cottage nearby, and started running after the bird. His mom was yelling “Tenga cuidado!” (Be careful!) as he wrestled with the chicken in the road. Finally, he got a hold of it, and with a triumphant smile, took it inside. The happy cries of his mother could be heard from the street. A tobacco farmer in Viñales. Cuba is a place of vivacious culture. It has been beaten by the fists of revolution, and suppressed by the hands of tyrannical leaders. The people are proud of enduring those hardships. That part of history is permanently cemented into who they are as people, and a symbol of how strong they are as a unified force. It is easier for Americans to travel to Cuba now than it has been for the past 50 years. The Cuban government has loosened travel restrictions, opened hotels, and even started to allow private ownership of some restaurants. Despite normalizing U.S. relations with Cuba, its people face overwhelming challenges. The average Cuban makes the equivalent of $16 U.S. dollars per month. Buying food, gas, and other necessities for a family can consume a month’s pay, and the rations provided by the government are barely enough to feed one person. The infrastructure of the country is old, and many people use cars that date back to the early 1950s, when trade between the U.S. and Cuba was active. Some construction projects have stalled for years, leaving buildings covered with scaffolding. Despite these challenges, Cubans are some of the happiest people you will ever meet. At night, families party together, and music pours from the windows and doorways, flooding the streets with sounds. During the day, they trade goods in open-air markets, and play games in the streets. In the evening, people frantically flock to the park to get the few hours of Internet service the government allows. Although Cuba is a country of scarcity, it has an abundance of culture and excitement like no place else.

Lights Out, Please! Nesting Season Begins on March 1st in Indian River County
L
eatherback sea turtles, commonly referred to as “living dinosaurs,” evolved around 60-100 million years ago. These magnificent creatures are still alive today with help through legal protection measures, joint conservation efforts and public support. These critically endangered turtles are on average 6 feet long, weight up to 1,000 lbs., and are built for deep dives and migrating long distances. Beginning on March 1st, the beaches of Indian River County start changing. These living dinosaurs migrate down from Canadian waters, where they feed exclusively on jellyfish and other gelatinous critters, to begin depositing and carefully camouflaging multiple nests along our beaches. Instructed through the county’s Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP), daily sea turtle nesting monitoring begins on March 1st in order to identify, protect, and collect scientific data for all nests laid on the beaches. In concordance with nesting season comes the commencement of the county’s and municipality’s lighting ordinances. These rules strictly state that all light fixtures visible from the beach should use a long wavelength light source and shall be either shielded or turned off after 9pm as to not illuminate the beach and impact nesting sea turtles or their hatchlings. Each lighting ordinance within Indian River County is in
effect from March 1st to October 31st and incorporate all lighting fixtures, even flashlights. To combat persistent beach front artificial lighting issues, a new program is beginning. It is called the Turtle Friendly Business Program, and is the first of many new programs being put into place to support the goals of the County’s HCP. This program will work with beachside businesses, to challenge and engage them in sea turtle conservation by holding them to a turtle friendly standard. There will be criteria for each business to achieve including the following: • have easily accessible sea turtle education material • advertise local sea turtle related activities • promote clean beaches and recycling • have procedures in place to prevent obstructions to nesting turtles • have proper lights and shields in place to prevent impacts to hatchlings
• staff will need to attend the annual HCP meeting to learn about sea turtle biology, their role in the coastal ecosystem, and important county updates. At the end of the nesting season, after two random inspections, and if criteria have been met, the businesses will be able to market themselves as turtle friendly businesses, resulting in recognition opportunities locally and throughout the state. You can learn more about sea turtles and Indian River County’s HCP by visiting www.ircgov.com/coastal. Get Hooked on Snook and Speckled Trout this Spring!
E
arly spring is perhaps the best time for fishing the Indian River Lagoon and surrounding areas. Air and water temps are on the rise with cold fronts tapering off. This brings many baitfish and predators to the shallow waters to sun themselves and feed. The shallow grass flats, spoil islands, and smaller channels are hot spots. The water clarity is still very clean and sight fishing is at its best. The targeted species for this time of year are snook, which are in season February 1st until June 1st. The legal harvest size limit is 28-32 inches, one snook per person with fishing license and a snook stamp per day. Another popular fish this time of year is the speckled sea trout. The larger ones are known as “gator trout.” The Indian River Lagoon is home to some of the largest in the state, as well as the country. The size and bag limits are 15-20 inches; one over 20 inches is allowed; and a maximum of five per person. Please, take only what you need so we ensure that everyone has a chance to catch these great fish for generations to come. Special thanks to White’s Tackle in Fort Pierce, and Maverick Boat Company, for being my great sponsors. Another great local company to check out is Man-O-War Fishing Company. hat started as a men’s-only resort boutique in 1992, has since become a one-stop-shop for men and women. In 1992, Vernon Scott only carried resort wear for men. It catered to the island lifestyle, and was located at the Village Shops for nearly 15 years. The store’s reputation was built upon exceptional customer service and paying special attention to the needs of customers. That still holds true today. Vernon Scott is probably best known for the resort-style jacket that comes in a variety of colors. During 2011, Vernon Scott began catering to the island women, too. There’s a little bit of everything for the island vibe, from great accessories to complement dresses, to sandals, hats and purses. In October 2013, the store moved to 818 Beachland Boulevard, where it is more centrally located to meet its customers’ needs. Inside, there’s always a palette of colorful, high quality clothing and accessories. Patterns and color are the most important trend in Vero Beach. I
have worked in the restaurant industry for the past 40 years . In April, I was contacted by Capt. Hiram’s Resort regarding the Food and Beverage position. After visiting the resort, I was hooked. I consulted with my wife and son, and a unanimous decision was made to move to Florida! I started my new job Aug. 1 here at Capt. Hiram’s! First, we separated the two dining venues by renaming them. Blackfins Riverfront Grill is the casual, full menu, sit-down restaurant, and the Sandbar Beach Club is the place for great drinks, awesome views and live entertainment. At both venues, we are using fresh ingredients sourced
from local farms, ranches in Okeechobee, and seafood from Fort Pierce. We’ve converted our food production from pre-packaged to house-made, and we are confident we can offer the best product in the area. Our motto is simple: fresh foods, sourced locally, prepared simply. Enjoy. John E. Scruggs Food & Beverage Director Capt. Hiram’s Resort jscruggs@hirams.com

Something New is Brewing in Vero Beach
I
n the past couple of years, the craft brewing scene has exploded. Locally, you may have visited Vero’s first brewery, Orchid Island, Fort Pierce’s Sailfish, or Sebastian’s Pareidolia. It certainly appears that, for beer, the way of the future will be very similar to the way of the past. Before prohibition, every town had its own brewery. Packaging up product and shipping it across the country wasn’t realistic, so most people drank locally-produced beer. It’s a very exciting time right now for craft beer. The more breweries that open, the more competition, camaraderie, and exposure the industry gains. This is great for every community. Just like having a local sports team to root for, or buying fruit and vegetables from your local farmer’s market, most people enjoy having a fresh, locally-made, handcrafted beer. Vero’s next brewery, Walking Tree Brewery, is expected to open in April, established by a crew of Vero Beach locals. It occupies a relatively unknown, but historic Navy building between Piper Aircraft and Dodgertown. It served as a supply warehouse built by the Navy in 1945, with 24,000 square feet of open space. Giant wood trusses, raw concrete, and abundant natural light make it a very unique space. Walking Tree will brew approachable craft beer, with easy-drinking English styles and pale ales. “My goal is to introduce people to types of beer they’ve never tried before and educate them on their origins and histories,” says Alan Dritenbas, the marketing and sales personality at Walking Tree. “Our tasting room is going to be a great place to explore beer. We will give guided tours of the facility and explain the most exciting parts of the brewing process.” The wide open space will offer a clear view of Walking Tree’s brewer, Mike Malone, turning grain, hops, water, and yeast into delicious beer.
36
March-April 2016
“Similar to most chefs, I love turning raw ingredients into something people can enjoy,” Malone explains. Walking Tree will produce enough beer to supply local bars and restaurants in Indian River County and hopes to grow throughout the Treasure Coast. Starting with draft beer, the goal is to begin canning and bottling within a couple of years. The brewery will offer a family-friendly game area with a pool table, darts, cornhole, shuffleboard table, and guests can definitely expect some friendly tournaments. There will be scheduled yoga events, painting classes, beer trivia nights, beer and food pairings, open mic nights, even a men’s sea shanty choir. These special features and events are aimed at giving guests an opportunity to connect with one another, and the community. Walking Tree is already making a positive impact in the community, before the doors have even opened to the public. “We aim to be stewards of our environment,” says Dritenbas. There are currently pallets of oyster mats stacked on racks at the brewery. Local groups such as the Rotary, Power Squadron and many others have assembled thousands of these mats that will soon be deployed in the Indian River Lagoon to help clean the water. “Our logo is mangrove roots,” adds Malone, “We want to promote conservation of our environment however possible. For example, our used grain will be donated to local farmers for their cows.” Local beer aficionados are salivating with anticipation as the finishing touches are made to Walking Tree Brewery. P
eople all over the country are falling in love with the sea creatures from Quirkyville. Vero Beach entrepreneurs and friends, Chris Katilus and Leslie McGuirk, have created irresistibly cute and quirky plush animals. Children love them because they are cool and grownups use them in home décor for a touch of whimsy. “We are all about celebrating that ‘quirky is the new cool.’ In a world of conformity, we have invented Quirkyville, where the more you celebrate your uniqueness, the more popular you are,” says McGuirk. McGuirk, owner of McGuirk’s Quirks Design Company, writes and illustrates children’s books. Katilus was owner of GEO Productions, a production company, as well as Bay Head Outfitters, an upscale saltwater fly fishing retail store in New Jersey. After Katilus saw the more than 1,500 products that McGuirk had designed for the Japanese Department store Takashimaya, she decided it was time to bring more of this creativity to the U.S. Katilus asked her friend, “What if you create a line of quirky sea creatures, but not the typical ones? Lets call it QUIRKYVILLE!” McGuirk

was off and running and the first of their plush animals were born. Quirkyville.com details the deep message behind the fun and unique designs, “Quirkyville is an imaginary sea world, inhabited by quirky sea creatures. They deal with the same feelings and issues we humans face everyday. Their positive messages inspire us to be ourselves. Each of these creatures teach us that when you take the time to look below the surface, it’s cool to be quirky.” Each animal has a special message on its tag. The first plush toy, a seven-legged octopus named Stetson, wears his heart on one of his arms. Next came Zsa Zsa, the Portugese Woman O’ War,
followed by Cezar the anchovy with an afro, and then Fishycoise, and others. “Leslie’s drawings were so original and simple at the same time. It seemed like the next logical step was to make them into plush creatures that could be held,” says Katilus, who originally had them handmade to capture their look. Now the Quirkyville sea creatures are available for people who can’t seem to order just one. The more you get to know each character’s unique traits, the more attached you get. Quirky is definitely the new cool! See them all at Quirkyville.com.

Time for a Tune Up
A
s we put the key in the ignition and crank the engine, we rely on our car to operate smoothly. Whether we drive a luxury automobile, a trusty standard or an older model, we must maintain the vehicle properly. If we don’t, it will break down, leaving us frustrated and inconvenienced. Thankfully, our cars come with a variety of gauges that alert us to give them attention. The gas light comes on when the tank is low and off we head to the nearest filling station. Consider for a moment that our bodies are similarly designed and need to be maintained in order to stay healthy and prevent premature decline. Symptoms are our bodies’ gauges that let us know something is off kilter. An ache here, a pain there, difficulty sleeping, bloating, fatigue, low libido…when symptoms appear, it’s time to visit an acupuncturist for a tune-up. An acupuncturist is like a good mechanic. An acupuncturist fixes the outward problem by finding the underlying cause, in addition to ensuring that all parts are in good working order. Similar to a mechanic checking your car’s computer for disruptions in the circuitry, an acupuncturist checks your Qi for disruptions in the flow of energy in your body. Qi flows in specific circuits and any blockage can produce unwanted symptoms. A mechanic also checks oil, water and other fluid levels because fluids are the raw
materials that certain parts need to function. An acupuncturist may check blood or saliva levels of vitamins, nutrients and hormones to determine deficiencies. Nutritional supplements may be needed to give your cells, tissues and glands the raw materials they need for optimal function. Just like your trusted mechanic, an acupuncturist knows when the symptom is really a small problem that can be easily fixed or when it’s the sign of
something bigger that needs attention. One thing is for certain, ignoring the signals from either your car or your body often results in a more costly fix down the road! Your health is the most important asset you have. Maintain it properly and you’ll prolong your vehicle of life. By Angela King, AP, DOM Indian River Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine

Top 8 Garden Tools
Every Weekend Gardener Should Have These Basics
F
• Handsaw Next up on the list, is a good handsaw; preferably one that will connect to an extension pole saw for trimming trees. Again, select high-quality tools as opposed to the lowest price, as you get what you pay for.
• Hand Pruners The first tool every gardener needs is a good set of hand pruners. The best type are called bypass pruners. These are forged from two pieces of steel with a replaceable blade. Avoid the gimmicks like ratchet pruners and comfort grip handles. Go for a solidly built, simple pair of hand pruners.
• Shovels One must always have a good shovel handy. A good collection is comprised of three shovels: a flat shovel for grading, a round shovel with a pitch to the blade for digging a hole, and a very sharp nurseryman spade for cutting roots.
• Hedge Shears The next weapon in the arsenal is a good pair of hedge shears. Just like hand pruners, buy one that is made from two pieces of forged steel with the hilt (like a knife) that has two handles which connect for comfort. We do not suggest the use of power trimmers for the average home gardener, even though they get the job done faster, they tend to do more damage than good.
• Rakes As for leaf rakes, the selections are endless. Narrow finger rakes work inside the shrubs. Large leaf rakes are for cleaning up big areas. Both can be used at the end of the raking job as “salad tongs” to fill up the garbage bag!
ace it, what guy doesn’t like tools? Auto mechanics have their wrenches, carpenters have their chisels and planes, and us landscape guys have our pruners, saws, shovels, rakes and hoes. It’s all about the right tool for the job; no matter what your trade. So here’s the lowdown.
• Chainsaw If you’re a large property owner, it might be a good idea to have a chainsaw handy. Again, choose quality over price. I prefer a chainsaw with a 14” or smaller bar, and one that has handle and controls on the top of the chainsaw. • Wheel barrel Get a wheel barrel. Not a cheap one because you simply replace it after the first weekend of use, but spend some money and get one with the tire that will not go flat, good strong handles, and the capacity to hold more than couple bags of mulch. • A GREAT garden hose Last, but not least, get a good garden hose. The best length is 50 to 100 feet. Splurge on the heavy duty hose that does not kink, with brass fittings at each end. It will be worth it! So there you go—get tooled up! You’ll have the perfect arsenal to be the weekend gardener. Now, get started…spring is almost here!

eads aren’t often associated with modern American men. However, beaded jewelry is considered hauté couture with fashionable local guys. Far different from the worry beads of old, modern fellow, Paul Tripaldi, wears functional beaded jewelry. They represent a method of focus and are a constant reminder for him to stay in the “now.” He wears his bracelets stacked in multiples. His love of beads began with a walk on the beach and the discovery of sea glass. He learned to wrap his treasures using precious metals. “Handling and working with beads is catharsis,” Tripaldi says. “I shop at A Bead Above because they have the highest quality natural products, and the materials I buy there feel good.” Ivan Tchamkin is another hip, young man wearing beads. He has designed his own jewelry at the store. Drawn to organic colors and shapes, he likes the minerals with dendritic inclusions. Mixed jasper colors and agates, he prefers jewelry that is subtle. “I like the store because anyone can go there and get the same service,” says Tchamkin. John Frazier is someone who is never seen without his signature necklaces. Frazier wears a necklace everyday. “I’m different, not even a little bit different, not at all like everyone else,” Frazier explains. “I like my jewelry to be different, too.” Most of his favorite pieces contain lampwork art glass. “I like the selection of art glass at A Bead Above,” Frazier adds. “I pick out all the beads and then pass it off to Penny, and she does her magic. She always has excellent suggestions.” Penny Batson is the owner and designer at A Bead Above, located at 55 Royal Palm Pointe. “I’m always happy to help,” says Penny. “It is exciting to see these dashing dudes wander into the store. Completely unpredictable and truly unique, it is a pleasure to shop with them in mind.” By Penny Batson Designer, A Bead Above

F
or college basketball fans, March is known for one thing and one thing only, March Madness. March Madness refers to the nearly month-long holiday of fierce competition and nail-biting games that is the NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship. Similar to selecting your top picks for March Madness, at Snow’s Custom Cabinetry, it can be your “dream team” for custom cabinet design! For these weekends and the weekends in between, college basketball fans will tell you there is nothing more important than the perfect spot to watch the game. Hello, Handsome
Healthy hair belongs to salon-savvy men.
M
en: they are often loved for their looks, charm, and wit. What about their hair? Today’s man wants to be recognized not judged, especially when it comes to his hair. For today’s savvy man, a professional hair salon is the most important destination for hair health. From color to seamless fades, men are more aware of the latest hair trends and techniques than ever before. Highlighting and gray coverage is possible and can be achieved only by artists who understand the structure and image of well-respected males. Men need hair professionals who can accommodate their need for change and versatility. Over-washing and non-conditioned hair is becoming an epidemic. The wash-and-go carefree mentality can still be achieved, but finished with style and class. The secret to a well-groomed man is in the product. Sun and sweat dry out hair strands to their breaking point and can create problematic scalp issues. Ultraviolet ray protectants and moisturizing conditioners are a must-have for hair and scalp health. Pastes and gels reveal the details in the haircuts while providing incredible amounts of shine and flexible hold. Men often suffer from scalps that can become flaky and dry, or overly-sebaceous and oily. Because of this, men’s products have ingredients to help overcome these challenges. The well-groomed man aims for the trendy, healthy hair option as opposed to gambling away his magnetism. Eminence Hair Design, conveniently located 20 minutes north of Vero Beach in Sebastian, proudly maintains men’s hair as if they were kings. While walk-ins are accepted, reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling the salon Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. With careful consideration to every individual need, each guest at Eminence Hair Design acquires a renewed sense of self. Having a professional salon experience with passionate hair artists makes all the difference. ello East Siders, greetings from the West Coast! Reporting live from sunny Los Angeles where it’s 84 degrees. From orange groves to Golden Globes, life sure has taken me on an epic journey thus far. Not even two weeks into being a “newbie,” as they call me out here, I was invited to attend the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards. Crossing that off my bucket-list was unexpected, but truly unforgettable. I was honored to converse, dine, and dance among some of my biggest idols in the entertainment industry. Afterwards, I attended the NBC Universal, HBO, and Weinstein/Netflix after-parties. Rubbing elbows with Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Leonardo DiCaprio was the icing on the cake after a perfect, star-studded event. My first semester at UCLA has been gradually more exciting each day. The campus is breathtakingly beautiful and so big I was lost for at least two hours my first day. It doesn’t take long for Bruin Nation to win you over. I’m proudly wearing my blue and gold, attending any UCLA sporting event that I can. Is it football season yet? Being a full time student again has been an adjustment. Healthy lifestyle routines have been a very important contributor to my current 4.0 GPA. While the East Coast beaches will always be number one in my heart, L.A. is full of exciting things to do and places to see. Here are a few of “Franke’s Faves” you won’t want to miss if you decide to visit. H Must do: The Ace Hotel in downtown L.A., housed in the former United Artists building, is at the top of my list. Check out the hotel’s rooftop, you might just bump into Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Lawrence, or Matt Damon. Don’t miss Brentwood Country Mart on Sundays. It’s the perfect pre- or post-brunch hotspot. This country-themed outdoor luxury retail mart is a favorite of Reese Witherspoon, Adam Sandler, and Angelina Jolie. The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows. A personal favorite of mine is the Polo Lounge. For more than a century, it has been the hot spot for 52

Surf and Fish the Coastal Life A few weeks ago, I was making my way down the beach photographing waves when I came across this sandbar that was producing some really nice barrels. I noticed something very unique about the setting. I had the rising sun in front of me, clouds breaking up and scattering the light, and these fisherman casting into the surf. Its scenes like this which continually get me stoked on where I live: Vero Beach. One of my favorite things about Vero is the amount of options we all have right here in our back yard to get out and enjoy! It’s truly inspiring!

YETI: Born from Frustration, Built for the Wild
oy and Ryan Seiders, YETI founders, grew up on boat decks and deer leases, where gear improved every year –with the exception of coolers. Handles broke, lids caved in, and the good times always outlasted the ice. Cheap equipment will always be just that, cheap. After deciding to never settle on cheap again, the Seiders founded YETI and set out to build the cooler that could withstand all their adventures, while still bringing cold drinks to the cleaning table. YETI makes products in all shapes, sizes and colors to be indestructible and to keep ice for days. So wherever your fishing adventures take you – miles offshore, fishing the Indian River Lagoon, or back at the dock after a long day—YETI has you covered. YETI products featured: Tundra: After frustrations with cheap coolers, YETI over-engineered the hell out of them and ended up creating a whole new category of coolers with legendary toughness and famed ice retention. Now, they make the rugged, all-purpose Tundra in enough sizes to fit any outdoor adventure. It’s even certified bear-resistant! Orchid Island Hardware 615 Beachland Blvd. Vero Beach (772) 231-4685

Hopper: Whether your adventures take you stand-up paddleboarding on the Indian River Lagoon, or fishing in the kayak, the Hopper is 100% leak-proof, engineered to keep ice for days, and tough as nails with its TPUlaminated, high-density fabric that is waterproof, resistant to punctures, mildew and UV rays. So you can paddle that extra mile with the first lightweight, soft cooler that’s anything but. Tank: The perfect centerpiece to all the fun – whether you are back at the dock swapping fish tales, tailgating, backyard barbequing, or at a beach bonfire. Built to be just as tough as all the other YETIs, including all the features you’d expect to keep your drinks as frosty as possible. Rambler Series: Perfect for that long ride offshore or while at the cleaning station after a long day of fishing, these double-wall vacuum insulated, no-sweat design, drink holders keep your beverage as cold or as hot as science allows. Couple Goes Homeless for Rescue Animals
P
hotographer, Andrew Grant, and marketing professional, Amanda Hedlund, have spent the past three years living, working and traveling together 24/7—all for the love of animals. Grant has produced and self-published four books titled Rover. Rover helps bring awareness to the homeless pet population and raise money for animal rescues. He credits Ellen DeGeneres for launching the success of Rover in 2009 and has raised more than $1 million to date. Andrew was preparing for another year-long tour to produce the fourth Rover book, when he had the idea to invite his girlfriend along to enhance his fundraising efforts. “Andrew and I had known each other for a couple of years before we started dating and I had always admired his talents and the work he was doing for animals,” says Hedlund. “Who wouldn’t fall in love with a guy who has that kind of heart?” Grant and Hedlund put all their belongings in storage and set out on their new journey together on Jan. 15, 2013. They were “homeless” up until this past summer when they decided to make Sun Valley, Idaho, their temporary home base. The couple has been to nearly all 50 states for the tour. In each city they stop, they tour several rescue facilities and select only one in each community as their Rover beneficiary. Grant says, “It’s hard to select only one rescue, but we focus on those that have a comprehensive spay/neutering program in place and educate the community about pet adoption. We’ve come across rescues that don’t have substantial funding or a state-of-the-art facility, but use their resources creatively and effectively. Those organizations really stand out to us and we take great pride in bridging long-lasting relationships between generous donors and deserving rescues.” “There are so many captivating dogs living in rescues, both purebreds and mixed breeds. We accept all dogs in Rover because they all help shelter animals,” says Hedlund. Traveling and working with a companion is not an easy feat, but through the heart-warming work of helping animals, Grant and Hedlund have proven a true testament of their relationship—a strong bond for helping animals can also be unconditional. Rover will be in Florida, including a stop in Vero Beach, April 12 - 24. Book a sitting for your canine friend at www.roverworks.org.

Rover is a museum-quality hardcover book that’s a tribute to man’s best friend. With more than 500 images in stunning detail, nearly all of the dogs featured in Rover once lived in a rescue or shelter. I want to go with you!
D
oes your pet enjoy accompanying you wherever you go? To ensure you and your pet arrive safely at your destination, adhering to the following tips will help you and your pet do just that. Even with the best intentions, and no matter how quickly you plan to run into a store and then right back out, leaving your pet in a parked car is dangerous and can be deadly, especially here in Florida. Our tropical climate and intense sun can heat up a vehicle in minutes putting your pet at serious risk even in winter weather. An unforeseen delay once inside the store can be all it takes for that to occur. Heatstroke for a pet can lead to debilitating illness and possibly death. Utilize the A/C when they accompany you in the car and keep them in the shade of the roof as much as possible. Carrying a bottle of chilled water and your pet’s drinking bowl is highly recommended no matter how far you are traveling, even just around town. Never leave your pet unattended in the car. On the other side of the spectrum, auto trips with our pets to northern climates have the potential to expose them to frigid temperatures which also can lead to serious illness and death. Be sure your vehicle is travel worthy, including having a properly functioning heater, before your set out. Carry blankets with you in preparation for the possibility of exposure to cold weather. Transporting our pets via car also requires safety from the potential for collision. Safe travel for our pets includes a carrier case for small dogs and cats and a secure harness for medium to large dogs. This will keep them from being thrown about the car or being injured by an air safety bag. Some pets become anxious and even fearful during travel, and a carrier or harness can keep them from distracting the driver by seeking comfort via physical contact. Allowing your dog to hang their head outside the car window while traveling poses dangerous risks. For instance, the possibility of being struck by foreign objects, ejection during a collision, or just a sudden application of brakes can be hazardous. Always keep them safely inside your vehicle. That includes not transporting them in an unsecured fashion in the bed of a pick-up truck. Dogs can jump out or be ejected while the truck is moving, suffering serious injury or worse, be hit by an oncoming vehicle. When your pets accompany you on your automobile travels, whether across town or out of state, be prepared and make their safety your first priority. Charles B. BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming
into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life
in the stars
During the month of March we will experience a double whammy with two eclipses. There is a solar eclipse on March 8 and a lunar eclipse on March 23. Mark these days on your calendar (along with two days before and three days after). During an eclipse, life can get a little squirrely, so just be prepared. Make a list of what you most want to achieve this spring, and set your intentions on the new moon of April 7 and watch how nicely things unfold. ARIES: On March 7, the moon and Venus join forces, which should help with any projects you have developed in the past year. Keep an eye on your money towards the end of March and don’t do anything reckless. Go easy on your pals on April Fool’s Day since the part of you that is a trickster will be activated in early April. After April 9, you are in for a wild ride! The rest of the month will not be boring. Better buckle up! TAURUS: There are some ultra strong aspects in March and April that will be certainly felt by all Taurus people. There is that supercharged new moon on March 8, which is also the eclipse. This doesn’t have to be a negative thing, but it will be intense. And then there is good news for you on March 16, when Jupiter and Pluto are creating beneficial aspects. April brings the possibility of some much-needed hedonistic pleasures. Have fun, but just contain yourself around April 17 when you really need to focus on work. GEMINI: Mid-March brings some awareness that a relationship you are in is getting too intense. Pay attention and listen to your inner voice regarding whether to hang in there or move on. Try not to panic. By the time you get to the lunar eclipse on March 23, everything will become clear. The new moon on April 7 brings in a lot more spontaneous fun. Overall, April is an auspicious time for all relationships, however a bit of a warning around April 16, when you might feel a bit irritable. CANCER: The eclipses in March will inspire you to learn something new about metaphysics, or your spirituality. It’s as if you have been on a long journey and now you are finally home and can allow yourself the luxury of relaxing. Finally, money issues are being resolved, and you are starting a new financial chapter. April brings some nice, solid aspects to the area of your chart relating to friends. You have not been taking a lot of time off for relaxation, so consider lightening your work load in April. LEO: You have some big fish to fry this March. There are some auspicious opportunities, so you need to make hay while the sun shines around the two eclipses on March 8 and March 23. These are times of inspired beginnings, but just make sure you look at every detail very carefully before jumping in with both feet. You will be energized during the month of April and making tremendous headway on some project you have been working on. April 18 is a great day to finalize a deal. VIRGO: Virgos like to fix things, and during the month of March, you will feel like you are the therapist for all your friends who have relationship issues. March 14 is a day for you to lay low, as you will be worn out from hearing about everyone’s problems. In April, you should really stop thinking about others so much and start to strut your own stuff. There is an intense aspect on April 6, which hopefully will remind you to put yourself first.

March-April 2016
LIBRA: March brings a lot of unexpected fun. If you are single, you might meet someone, especially around March 16 when anything is possible. April continues this trend of heightened activity in the relationship section for all Libras. April 9 is especially enticing as you may find yourself attracted to someone quite unexpectedly. If you get into a little bit of a riff around April 19, just know that it will pass. SCORPIO: You are sexy, brooding, and mysterious and these eclipses in March will put all those Scorpio qualities into high gear. Your energy level is very high, especially around March 14, so don’t be surprised if people want to be around you in the hopes that some of your good mojo wears off on them. The full moon on April 22 is in your sign of Scorpio. This is a great time to set intentions for things you want to accomplish. SAGITTARIUS: If you have thought about getting a weekly massage, or starting yoga classes, the month of March is the time to put these ideas into practice. You will have plenty of energy in March, but the trick is to make sure you channel it well. Lay low around March 30 as someone around you may be in a feisty mood. April continues to bless you with high spirits. Someone might play a trick on you on April Fool’s Day, but if anyone loves surprises it is a Sagittarius! CAPRICORN: Things are a little tense for all Capricorns in March. On March 14, there is a testy aspect where you will be required to speak up and rectify some situation. The two eclipses in March are shaking up your daily routines. Your job is to make sure you are not taken advantage of. Pick your battles and know that by April, things will feel a lot more comfortable. April would be a great month for working on projects at home and spending time with family and friends. AQUARIUS: The supercharged new moon on March 8 will have you reviewing your career goals. If you aren’t doing something you love, you need to reconnect with your passions. And speaking of passion, you have an interesting opportunity around March 2, so keep your eyes open. April brings changes on the home front. Perhaps you have been thinking of moving or renovating? Now is the time to be open to change on the domestic front. PISCES: Expect some huge changes with the solar eclipse on March 8 taking place in your sign. If you were born close to that date, it will be a birthday to remember. Also, Venus moves into Pisces on March 12, so this is nice for your love life. The next eclipse is on March 23 and it is super powerful because it is a full moon and an eclipse. Try to have low expectations during that time. A vacation would be well timed for April. Pisces need the water, so make sure you are either in it, on it, or looking at it.
