Stop and smell the flowers… Explore. We were ready for an “Art in Bloom” adventure, so we decided to check out nearby outdoor estates! Our first road trip took us to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. As you drive in, all you see is the glimpse of a tall building at the top of a hill. Being the explorers that we are, we parked and hiked the hill to the wilderness trail. From our lookout at the top of the ridge, it is hard to believe that you could once upon a time see the ocean! The grasses on the hill were dry and prairie like compared to the lush, tropical gardens of Bok. The smell of fragrant orange blossoms from the surrounding groves were heavenly! Once inside the park, we were surrounded by old oaks draped in Spanish moss while we meandered down trails lined with blooming azaleas. Bok Tower is magnificent, nestled around majestic oaks that look small compared to the beauty of the tower. Dr. Bok’s vision lives on and continues to grow since 1929. Meditate and rejuvenate. Our next adventure was to the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm. This very quaint and elegant home is nestled just a few blocks from Worth Avenue. There are wonderful gardens with large monumental sculptures, a beautiful fountain with fish (which I loved feeding), a small gallery in the main house plus Mrs. Norton’s original artist studio. Chase butterflies. I love big Banyan trees and the drive down to Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables is lined with them. Visiting the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is another added bonus! This is truly a gardeners’ paradise with world renowned plant collections. Fairchild is currently hosting the Chihuly exhibit through the end of May. The butterfly exhibit is fun for the entire family! As we recharge our batteries and unplug from a hectic season, let’s remember to honor our veterans this Memorial Day, spend quality time with our parents for Mother’s Day & Father’s Day and take time for ourselves. Relax, breathe and remember what is most important – time spent with those you love and enjoying this beautiful planet we live on. Just another day in paradise,

No matter where you go there is art. Take a walk. Listen. Nature’s art is abundant and breathtaking. Bright, blossoming flowers with fresh, sweet scents fill the air, while colorful birds perform a symphony for those who will listen. Art is everywhere and where there is art, there is life. We loved walking along the winding garden paths, taking time out to sit and reflect on what truly matters and absorbing the beauty around us. We hope you do too!

In 1921, like so many of us today, Bok spent the winter months in Florida in the residential Mountain Lake community near Lake Wales and adjacent to Iron Mountain. While enjoying Florida’s dramatic sunset and bird life among the virgin pines and sandhill scrub of Iron Mountain, the idea came to Bok to preserve this breathtaking hilltop and create a sanctuary—a place of beauty, serenity and peace. Bok wanted to create a place that would “touch the soul with its beauty and quiet.” Bok commissioned famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., to bring his vision to life! The first year of construction was spent digging trenches and laying water pipes for irrigation, after which rich black soil was brought by the thousands of loads. With the planting of bushes and trees to provide food for migrating birds and a refuge for squirrels and the over 126 bird species, Bok’s subtropical garden was in place. Amidst the sweeping landscape of lush gardens, Bok constructed the majestic Singing Tower, which houses a 60-bell carillon. Then, there’s Reflection Pool, which softly captures Singing Tower in its water, giving visitors one of the most memorable experiences in the gardens. Bok presented this extraordinary gift to the American people on February 1, 1929. Since 1929, Bok Tower Gardens has had more than 23 million visitors experience this historic landscape garden, the Singing Tower carillon, Reflection Pool, and a 1930s Mediterranean-style mansion. Bok Tower Gardens is a little-known piece of serene bliss and tranquility within Florida’s diverse landscape. Discover 365 days of fun for the entire family at Bok Tower Gardens, a national historic landmark.

Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is a 1.7 acre tropical garden, artist’s studio and historic home located less than a mile south of downtown West Palm Beach. It was founded in 1977 by artist Ann Weaver Norton to preserve this unique green space and cultural treasure for the enjoyment of the community. Among the Gardens vast collection of rare palms, cycads and native plants are Ann Norton’s monumental sculptures, which were built in situ over a period of 15 years. The visitor follows a meandering path through this lush natural sanctuary to discover these mysterious, large-scale works of brick and granite. The Gardens offer a rare opportunity to experience a sculptor’s complete vision in its true and intended setting. The artist’s studio contains works in bronze, stone and wood, encompassing over four decades of sculpture and several artistic periods and concepts by the artist. Her works in Northern Cedar “Gateways” are abstract yet warm, inviting and remarkably avant-garde even by today’s standards. Her carving strokes are rhythmical and at times hypnotic, creating a uniform textured surface on the wood. The larger works, some standing over 12 feet tall, are remarkable given her petite size. The works inhabit the studio like a forest alluring the visitor, a gateway to understanding Ann. Built in 1924, the nationally and locally designated historic home was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style made popular by well-known architect Maurice Fatio. In 1937, society architect Marion Sims Wyeth redesigned the exterior and added Monterey style elements. Wyeth also designed the studio, an exceptionally interesting workplace. The first floor of the historic home is used as a Gallery that features traveling exhibitions by visiting artists as well as works from Ann Norton. Exhibition Gallery Talks take place on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. with exhibition tours offered on Sundays at noon. Gallery and Gardens hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance to the home and gardens is free for ANSG members; non-member admissions are $10 adults, $8 seniors and $5 students. Group tours are available through education@ansg.org.

World-renowned plant collections from all over the world create some of the most unique settings to explore. The Tropical Rainforest—the only outdoor one of its kind in the continental U.S.—features gorgeous broadleaf plants collected from the heart of the Amazon. The Bailey Palm Glade looks eastward towards Biscayne Bay and its surrounding jewel-toned plant life. Bright water lilies, bathed in sunlight, bloom throughout the landscape’s many water gardens. A must-see is the new Wings of the Tropics butterfly exhibit, where guests are immersed in the home of hundreds of dazzling exotic butterflies from Central and South America and Southeast Asia. The Metamorphosis Lab teaches the lifecycle of butterflies as they emerge from their chrysalis and are released into the conservatory. A whole day of activities awaits visitors. The garden is perfect for a romantic stroll with a loved one, a picnic with the whole family, or a therapeutic solo walk to recharge. In addition to traveling on foot, daily tram tours give a narrated overview of the garden’s exhibits and history. For a nice bite to eat, the Glasshouse Café’s tropical menu has soups, salads, sandwiches, and hand-crafted sodas with outdoor or indoor seating overlooking the colorful butterfly conservatory. The Lakeside Café has lovely views of the palm-lined Pandanus Lake and offers casual fare and smoothies. Popular festivals held throughout the year include the International Chocolate Festival in January, Orchid Festival in March, and Mango Festival in July.

Ross Power Knows Is it in a park, a yard, in a lobby, along a street, or three miles out in the Atlantic 40 feet below the surface secured to the ocean floor? The answer is all of the above if you’re talking to Artist Ross Power. FOCUS is a stainless steel sculpture, 8 feet tall and 16 feet in diameter. It is presently on display with other monumental sculptures created by Ross ornamenting over 2 acres of Florida International University’s park setting in Miami. If you’re visiting the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Maui and stay in the Presidential Suite, a Ross Power sculpture will be standing front and center. If you have business in Los Angeles at the MGM Film Studios, you’ll find a Power sculpture in the lobby there too. If you were one of the thousands of scuba divers that visited the Ross Power Under sea Art Gallery that debuted in 1985 (the world’s first under sea art gallery) in Key Largo’s National Marine Sanctuary, then you know, that is public art too! Today, Power has the permit for the installation of FOCUS 3 miles offshore from Miami Beach and it is “rumored” that an undersea location is in the works off the shores of Vero Beach too! Once FOCUS is permanently fastened to the ocean floor it transcends the description of sculpture and becomes a Sculptural Marine Habitat, a title coined by Power. The positive and negative shapes have been designed in collaboration with prominent Marine Scientists assuring that aspects of the art will allow for a permanent habitat for a variety of marine life, enabling the art to be living and ever changing. Once submerged, an invitation will be extended to scuba divers with their cameras, as well as professional underwater photographers, to participate in a FOCUS photo contest. Then, upload the photo to the dedicated website and, if chosen, you will be awarded and published in a table top photo book. Your chosen photograph would become part of the traveling museum exhibit. Art: the universal language speaks on behalf of ocean conservation!

Charlie Miner, Jr. of Johns Island
As w pleas e celebra e and w rememb te Memo rial er a om lives, en that g ll the bra Day, v a and t hose ve a part e men of that g ave it their all.
Surviving WWII Pilot Written by Dr. John Tepper Marlin, a Harvard graduate, writer, blogger and former chief economist for three NY City Comptrollers. Below is a Q&A with Charlie Miner regarding his illustrious grandfather, FDR’s first Treasury Secretary, Will Woodin, and Charlie’s life here in Vero Beach. Dr. Marlin and his wife split their time in Vero and the other half in New York.
C
harlie Miner, Jr., Princeton ’43, studied engineering and joined the war effort as a pilot of a B-25 Mitchell twin-engine bomber, which had a crew of three or more. Miner flew multiple bombing missions over northern Italy and survived. My uncle Willem van Stockum was also a bomber pilot who flew fewer missions than Miner and is buried in France. (A book was written about my uncle, Time Bomber.) Of 16 million American veterans of World War II, fewer than one in 16 survives, only 80,000 in Florida. Miner is one of only 247 World War II vets left in Indian River County, probably the county’s oldest surviving WWII bomber pilot. He loves Vero Beach.
Charlie Miner, Jr.
Years ago in the 1950s and 1960s, the Riomar social life revolved around rotating dinners and celebrations among the original 12 houses. The 30 residents took turns throwing parties. The Riomar Inn came later. Johns Island—where Miner lives now—opened in 1970.
How Charlie Got to Vero Charlie Miner’s grandfather, Will Woodin, was the man who dealt with the financial panic of 1933 as FDR’s first Treasury Secretary. Will Woodin was born in Pennsylvania and settled in New York after a successful career as the CEO of a huge business selling railroad rolling stock. He had four children. The eldest and youngest settled in Vero Beach— Mary Woodin Miner and Libby Woodin Rowe. Libby’s husband, Wally Rowe, and a brother, bought homes in Riomar. Mary and Libby eventually lived in Vero Beach most of the year. Charlie’s mother lived in Johns Island after Riomar and died in 2007 at 102.
How Things are Different Charlie remembers not just the bridge that connected the two sides of the Indian River where Route 60 crosses before the concrete-arch Barber Bridge, but rather, the drawbridge that was built in 1995. Before that, back in the 1930s, there was a bridge made of wooden railroad ties and swung around horizontally to let boats through the Indian River. Back in the early days there wasn’t a Riverside Theater. Charlie says the money was raised in several ways. Rosie and Sterling Adams organized a dance every year. He and his cousin, Bill Rowe, used to sell season tickets and organized an auction of donated prizes to raise money for the theater. It is now a major institution in Vero.
What Miner Likes about Vero Beach What Charlie Miner has always liked about Vero is that it is quiet. That was one of the original motivations of the developers, along with the availability of rail transportation and ocean beaches. There is no strip with night clubs, no airport. As Charlie says, “I’m not a teenager anymore.”

The House that Gus Built House of Champions
B
oxing has taken New York City by storm as professionals, businessmen, and models are all clamoring for the full body sweat filled workout. Somehow boxing has become vogue in the NY fashion world too. Luxury designers like Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Chanel are partaking in the rage. Louis Vuitton, for example, created signature boxing gloves, mat, and boxing bag for a hefty price tag of $175,000.00. Boxing is the hottest fitness phenomenon in NYC, but Gus already knew this. Welcome to the house that Gus built. Perfecting and honing his skills over the past two decades, Gus is an authentic boxing trainer having worked with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Arturo Gatti, David Tua, Hector Macho Camacho and Zab Judah, famous boxers who used House of Champions for training. Gus has personally trained three-time World Champion Lightweight Stevie Johnston and Heavyweight Sherman Williams. Beginning his career at the tender age of 19 by apprenticing under the legendary boxing Hall of Fame manager and trainer Lou Duva, 26
May-June 2015
Tips from Gus The most important things in boxing are Timing and Distance. Timing: Depending on the style of fighter, you are either the bull or the matador and sometimes you have to be both. To land hard punches your feet should be in a good solid foundation. If you can make your opponent constantly move his feet while you are getting off your punches, there is less chance of your opponent landing something hard. It’s impossible to throw hard punches while moving your feet. Distance: Knowing where to be to avoid harm, while being able to land maximum power in your punches and creating angles is key.
Gus lives boxing and learned many of Lou’s training secrets. “I have a lot of Lou’s traits when it comes to training and handling of fighters” says Gus. “I learned from Lou how to keep fighters from getting stagnant in the gym and to keep training hard, but fun.”
Upon entering Gus’ gym, it’s like entering the ring; it’s hot and intimidating. But once you see Gus, his smile is welcoming and reassuring. Whether you’ve come to train like a pro or be a pro, there’s a sense of empowerment and accomplishment when working with Gus. Boxing classes include everything from pushups, pull-ups, planks, and running to sparring… it’s intense. At the end of an hour session, there is a feeling of personal achievement after having completed Gus’ workout that you have never experienced before. When leaving with your tired smile, you understand the newspaper clippings and pictures that adorn the walls truly reinforce the legacy that Gus’ boxing gym is for Champions! Tending the Garden of Your Mind
T
o cultivate a garden, one must pull weeds, plant seeds, and provide the continued care that encourages and supports the life of the plants. A garden requires ongoing attention; one must search for and eliminate new weeds, ensure proper nutrients for the soil, and control exposure to harsh or threatening environments. All of these efforts are essential for the survival of the garden. Our minds are analogous to a garden. Positive thoughts and affirmations are like seeds in that each contains all the information necessary to express its greatest potential. Often people try using affirmations to declare themselves and their lives to be better, but wonder why sometimes it doesn’t help. Usually, it’s because they have tried to plants seeds of positive thought without doing the hard work of removing the weeds of negative thinking. These weeds are often rooted in our past experiences, yet continue to influence or interfere in the present in a way that limits our joy. The best results from positive thinking come when effort is made to examine past traumas, disappointments, betrayals, losses, and failures and to clear the negative emotions generated from these experiences. Once the negative has been cleared, fertile soil then exists for the positive to take root. Tending to these new seeds of
thought with love, reassurance, compassion and forgiveness will begin to cultivate a peaceful mind. When practicing positive thinking or visualization, people are often emotionally invested in a specific outcome, yet this alters the true spirit of affirmations. Insisting on a certain job, a specific relationship, a windfall of money, or for someone to change only limits the options for your greater good and creates frustration when the exact form you desire doesn’t show up in your life. Instead, learn to plant seeds of emotions that you want to feel. Focus on contentment, love, gratitude, appreciation, security, and connection. When you stay open to these emotions and allow the creative process to flow through you, the unlimited possibilities and potential of the universe begin to take form in your life. At our office, we use Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) to assist patients in tending to their minds, and find it to be exceptionally effective. We witness patients eliminate their negative thinking and behavior, improve their mood, relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and embrace a more positive outlook on life with a sense of peacefulness in their heart. Operation Surf Heroes Making Waves
F
ourteen combat-wounded, active duty and veteran service members from various branches of the U.S. military joined forces in Cocoa Beach for Operation Surf, a unique, recreational, rehabilitative event, that was held in Florida for the first time ever on March 19-25. These amazing young men and women, many of whom served multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, worked with local surfing legends to overcome perceived limitations of their physical and psychological disabilities. Founder of Operation Surf, Van Curaza, along with Sean Slater and a team of instructors from Todd Holland’s School of Surf in Cocoa Beach, introduced each participant to the healing powers of the ocean through surfing. “Since 2008, Operation Surf has reached the lives of over 300 service men and women through its California-based events,” said event founder, Van Curaza. “We are thrilled to bring the 11th

event to Cocoa Beach, home to some of the best surfers on the planet.”
Operation Surf welcomed the public to join in supporting our heroes on the beaches and at the multiple events. Sponsored this year by Harris Corporation, along with generous donations of many local corporations, businesses and individuals. Operation Surf is a program organized by non-profit Amazing Surf Adventures. Operation Surf is recognized as a recreational, rehabilitative program by the U.S. government, but is not federally funded. It relies solely on the donations and support of the community. Please visit Operation Surf on Facebook for more information and opportunities to get involved.

Operation Surf was such an amazing event that brought the healing powers of the ocean, and the mental therapy of learning to surf to some of our military heroes that were injured protecting all of us here in the US of A! What I found most amazing about Operation Surf was how much it touched everyone’s hearts that were involved, from the injured veterans, surf instructors, volunteers, photographers, and the amazing staff that puts these events together. The special bonds we ALL made with one another will NEVER be broken or forgotten. God Bless Our Troops! here is something magical about marble. The delicate balance of soft light and swirls of color, the unique characteristics of each stone and the elegant detailing. Michelangelo once said that a statue already existed inside a block of stone and it was the sculptor’s job to discover it. Our statues and décor are lovingly handcrafted from solid marble. This is very important to us. So many products today are mass-produced. This is an old art form. No two are alike because they are carved from solid stone. We want our clients to have a quality, custom piece of art that will last for generations. Our large showroom space is located in downtown Vero Beach’s art and antique district and is reminiscent of a New York style gallery with its large windows and industrial simplicity. It’s perfect for displaying our imported fine art pieces. Aside from our various pieces in stock and many available for order, we also work with clients to create their own custom designs. In addition to our statuary, our walls are decorated with the vibrant colors of local artist Mimmo Amelio. We wanted to create a fun, artsy and chic space where we hope to hold events in the future. 34

We offer a wide array of statuary from Greek and Roman reproductions to modern and bold abstracts at reasonable prices. We showcase life-size figures and large fountains, furniture, and even small garden art and desktop pieces. We’ve incorporated some nautical styles, as well. The anchor was custom made for us as our logo piece. Anchor stones were used in ancient times to anchor ships to shore. We’ve chosen the name because we see a statue or large marble piece anchoring your design to your home or garden. We moved to Vero Beach from New York last
year and couldn’t ask for a more beautiful and charming place to live and have our business. Barefoot by Chance Sometimes houses are like certain pets that pick you to be their owner.
I
spent six years looking for a house to buy, so I could get out of the cold winters of Maine. The minute I walked in the door of 1960 West Barefoot Place, I knew this was my house. The hardwood floors, the high ceilings and exposed beams – it was a house for an artist. After making an offer on this house, I took a walk on the Wabasso beach and found a keychain in the sand, with a design of a barefoot print. The next day, my illustration agent called to say that Pampers wanted me to draw images of children’s bare feet in the sand. I knew that these were both good omens and that I belonged on Barefoot Place. Plus, 1960 was the year I was born. In between making the offer and moving in, two very extraordinary things happened. In April of 2000, I traveled to Italy for the International Children’s Book Festival. While on the plane, I sat next to a very nice couple. We didn’t get into personal details other than the fact they were both artists and they were going to Italy to paint. When I said goodbye to them, I never thought I would see them again. Just two weeks later, while walking down a street of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, I saw them on the other side of the street. I ran to greet them. They told me they lived in Hampton, New Hampshire, and asked where I lived. I replied, “I live in York, Maine, but I am about to move to Vero Beach, Florida.” They told me that they had just stayed at the Vero Beach Hotel a week before they met me on our flight to Italy and that they almost bought a house in Vero. Coincidentally, when I told them about the house on Barefoot, they too had looked at a house on that very street. The second coincidence was when my Colorado boyfriend helped me move to Vero, and when he went back to Boulder someone in a meeting asked where he got his tan. When he mentioned Vero Beach, a man said, “There is one really cool neighborhood in Vero called Summerplace.” My boyfriend replied, “That is where my girlfriend just bought a house.” 36

This man in Colorado had almost bought a lot on Barefoot Place! So from all over the world, everything was pointing to the fact that something special was going on. inancial expert, Chris Delaney, discovered the Treasure Coast in 2004 and knew he’d found paradise. Post-recession, he observed that the area retained its value better than most. With decades of experience helping investors impacted by stock market collapses, he was keenly aware of the need for asset diversification as a safeguard. He founded Treasure Coast Capital Trust in 2011 to give investors the opportunity to diversify their portfolios and benefit from the value of Treasure Coast real estate. TCCT is proud to offer two dynamic new investment options that are potentially much more lucrative than many traditional investment vehicles. The Self-Directed IRA program pools investors’ IRA funds to invest in projects. Using local real estate experts, TCCT identifies the best deals and purchases, renovates and resells them, usually within six months. Yields far exceed the low fixed rates investors are accustomed to, all without any investor holding a mortgage. “People don’t realize they can use their retirement funds to invest in other areas, like real estate, which can be more lucrative. A Self-Directed IRA gives the individual control over his money. He can choose where and how to invest. Any IRA can be a Self-Directed IRA,” explains Delaney. TCCT sets up SD-IRAs following IRS guidelines and investor’s funds continue to grow tax-deferred. TCCT makes it simple, guiding clients through the process from start to finish. Especially appealing for out of state buyers, the “Live the Dream” program is for buyers who want to purchase properties for personal use. TCCT locates homes that can be acquired at deeply discounted prices and manages renovations. Buyers can monitor the progress via webcam. TCCT in partnership with Lifestyle Concierge of Vero Beach, takes the stress out of the process and will completely coordinate your move. “We want to make purchasing and moving into your new home as easy as possible. We manage all the details so you can relax and immediately enjoy the amazing lifestyle that is available here,” says Beverly McCormick, owner of Lifestyle Concierge of Vero Beach. By the time buyers move in, their homes have already appreciated and they have a beautiful new residence. It’s a win-win. TCCT makes it easy to benefit from investing in Treasure Coast real estate, and the market is booming. The time to get in is now. literally stumbled onto photography as a career accidentally. While attending junior college in San Diego, a college counselor told me I needed to declare my major. “You have a lot of electives,” said the counselor. “I like electives!” I replied. “You need to declare a major. How about Photography? You have a lot of Photography electives.” said the counselor. “You can major in Photography?” I asked incredulously. And so, my photography career began. After completing more undergrad work in Tidewater, Virginia, I studied commercial photography at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. My first portraiture class was mandated core curriculum. The professor encouraged me to pursue photographing people, but I wanted to photograph landscapes and still life for advertising. However, after moving to Florida, I started work shooting headshots, comp cards, and portfolios for aspiring actors and models. The Florida agencies suggested that I specialize in photographing children, but when I was in LA, they said shoot men. After my son was born, didn’t shoot as much agency work. Instead, I was commissioned to do hand-colored portraiture of children. Since then, my work has evolved toward fashion, beauty and editorial of women with an emphasis on publication. Although I enjoy shooting multiple genres and have a weakness for equestrian or canine related photography, most of my work is described as classic, feminine and romantic. I am inspired by art, nature, rococo, vintage clothing, historical and contemporary fashion, French couture, and designers like Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. After focusing primarily on commercial corporate work, model portfolios and editorial work, I am excited to evolve a new phase of my career. I want to be able to offer everyday people like working moms, girlfriends, boyfriends, or high school seniors the “model” or “celebrity” experience including all the amenities of a fashion shoot like hair, makeup and wardrobe styling. I am expanding my business to offer boutique production services so that anyone can enjoy the same treatment that celebrities and models enjoy on a production set. Everyone has their own special beauty. I want to help my clients discover and capture what makes them uniquely beautiful. Let us help you capture your most beautiful you. ere at Tito’s Handmade Vodka, an important part of our story is how we balance working for Tito with a connection to our natural lives through rescuing and keeping dogs alongside us at our distillery and offices. Humans and dogs have co-evolved together for thousands of years and we agree—both species are stronger together. As Tito was just starting his business 20 years ago, he could afford to help more of the strays wandering near the distillery because Emancipet’s original clinic offered affordable care and happened to be in our own east Austin neighborhood. Emancipet’s unique approach to providing compassionate, high quality care to all animals, regardless of their owners’ ability to pay, has played a critical part in making Austin one of the safest and healthiest cities for pets in the U.S. Emancipet’s mission is to make spay/neuter and preventive veterinary care affordable and accessible to all pet owners. They achieve this by opening high-quality, high-volume clinics in communities that lack affordable vet care; supporting and training humane organizations to start or grow their own spay/neuter programs; and advocating for progressive spay/neuter public policy. Just as Tito’s Handmade Vodka has grown to become available all over the country, we are paying it forward to help Emancipet grow and make an impact in communities outside Austin. Visit vodkafordogpeople.com to meet all of the dogs in the Tito’s Handmade Vodka community and shop our online store for some fun dog themed merchandise with all proceeds going towards making Emancipet’s vision a reality. facebook.com/TitosVodka @TitosVodka pinterest.com/titosvodka @TitosVodka and @VodkaForDogPeople www.portfolio-verobeach.com

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener When It’s Allergy Season
By Dr. Charles B. Johnson and Dr. Marjorie J. Williams
S
pring has sprung...the flowers are blooming and the grass is green! With spring and warmer weather comes allergies not only for us but also for our beloved pets. Allergies in our pets most commonly present as itching, scratching, hair loss and pustular dermatitis. Pet allergies are often divided into three categories such as flea allergy, atopy (seasonal allergy) and food allergy. Trying to determine which of these allergies is causing our pets discomfort often requires a trip to your veterinarian for evaluation. Unfortunately, some of our pets can have one, two or a combination of these allergies. To discuss our pets allergies we will begin with food allergies. Food allergies can develop at any time resulting in an itching pustular skin condition. Animals that have been on the same food can suddenly develop an allergy to a component of the food formula. Often veterinarians will do a food trial or place our pets on a prescribed diet containing a novel protein or a protein the pets have not been exposed to previously. Examples of some novel proteins often used in our pets diets include duck, venison, whitefish, potato or even kangaroo. Seasonal allergies or atopy have several potential offending allergens including pollens, grass, weeds and dust. Mild cases can be treated with medication prescribed by your veterinarian, but in more severe cases often blood testing and/or intradermal allergy testing is prescribed to determine the exact offending allergen or allergens. These blood tests and intradermal allergy tests can determine the exact allergen our pets are allergic to and can help develop an appropriate treatment plan for your pets. Last on the list is flea allergies. Flea allergies are initiated from fleas, a common nuisance found in South Florida. It often takes only one flea bite to initiate an allergic reaction. Treatment requires an effective flea preventative prescribed by your veterinarians to prevent flea infestation and stop the flea allergy from occurring in the future as well as other medications to treat the current skin condition. Unfortunately, allergies can be a lifelong problem and prevention is the main treatment. Whatever the source, allergies can cause mild to severe irritation to the skin (red, inflamed, moist tissue) which present a perfect condition for secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Thorough discussion with your pets’ veterinarian is often needed to identify the allergen and to place your pets on the appropriate treatment to control their condition. Enjoy the warmth and beauty of South Florida this season. With proper treatment, we and our pets can enjoy allergy season! Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, Inc. He and Marjorie J. Williams DVM, MS, DACVP are available Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:30pm and Saturday 8:00am-12:30pm. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

eat shop play beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings. Photo by Stacey Fletcher, from Vero Vine Lifestyle Photo Contest

horoscope
After many months of very intense astrological aspects, this May and June are going to feel much lighter. Everyone will be recovering from that heavy feeling of intense pressure. We can all take a collective sigh of relief. ARIES: During the month of May, you are astrologically scheduled toencounter people that request you take a giant leap forward. Your job is to keep these folks happy. They are helping to keep you inspired. A Full Moon on June 2 will energize you. Just be careful of your Aries temper around June 14th, when the Sun meets up with your fiery planet, Mars. TAURUS: Your ruling planet, Venus, slides into emotional Cancer on May 7th. Your heart will open and your level of sympathy for others may expand. May 17th is a great time for you to start anything new, as the Full Moon is in your sign. There is a nice dash of excitement around June 22nd. You are under lucky aspects at the end of June. GEMINI: The Sun will join Mercury and Mars in your sign on May 21st. These are your glory days, Gemini! You are very outgoing and social and there will be even more people wanting to spend time with you. June brings more playfulness. Just make sure you don’t go overboard in the fun department. CANCER: Cancers worry about money, more than any other sign in the Zodiac. But finally, during the month of May, it seems Cancers will be more comfortable in the financial area of life. This is a good time to splurge, which is hard for a crab to do. On June 24th, Mars moves into Cancer. Crabs may be more combative than usual. Usually crabs retreat, but not during the end of June! LEO: Mercury goes retrograde on May 18th. For the next three weeks, things may not go as planned with any group activities. June has you in the spotlight for romance and fun. Between Venus, the Goddess of Love in your sign, and the full Moon in lighthearted Sagittarius, you are going to have a packed social calendar. June 22nd is when all this social activity is at its high point. VIRGO: You have an earthy knack for giving great advice to your loved ones. You may be called into playing the role of a therapist around May 7th. The new moon on May 17th reminds you to make sure you don’t become rigid with your routines. There is a lot of expansive energy regarding home and family matters during the month of June. Enjoy all this activity, as people are craving your company. LIBRA: Time to start over. Ask for more help from partners and authority figures around May 17th. You will have the support you need to lay some new ground rules. The Full Moon on June 2nd combined with Venus in Leo on June 5th will certainly have you in the spotlight. There is no sense in trying to impress anyone. You will naturally attract what you need, both romantically and professionally. And the end of June looks nice for all one-to-one relationships. 62
May-June 2015
SCORPIO: The Full Moon on May 3rd will be in Scorpio. Be prepared to let the world see what you’ve got. This isn’t a time to be shy. Try to finish all contracts and business deals before May 18th, when Mercury goes retrograde. During the month of June, everything points towards your standing in your truth and taking steps to further your career. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want, and deserve, especially around June 22nd. SAGITTARIUS: Speak your mind during the month of May. You are never one to hold your tongue, but when mid-May arrives you will be especially prone to letting people know how your feel. Just try not to become too volatile. June 6th through June 10th is a great time to focus on putting a little more emphasis into your romantic life. Stick with people who enjoy your “horsey” sense of humor. CAPRICORN: With intense Pluto in your sign, you have felt as if the last few months have brought big changes. This feeling will continue. Just remember, all these changes are for your highest good. Around May 14th or 15th do not rush into any big decision. June brings some drama in the money department. Drama doesn’t have to be bad. Just know that you need to call the shots. AQUARIUS: Early May will have you feeling as if you are in the hot seat regarding a professional matter. Try to make sure you hold close the ones you can trust, and separate from those who do not have your back. Aquarians are usually so humanitarian, they tend to think everyone is basically nice, but it is time to really examine people’s actions. The month of June has you learning how to pivot. New directions are popping up and it is time to explore all your options. PISCES: The combined Full Moon on May 3rd with the New Moon on May 17th has you feeling like a ball in a pinball machine. You are in the mood to travel and it is a good time to hit the road or at least the gym. The last couple of months have had you worrying about money, but it seems this May you are recouping any losses. Early June brings peace and by the end of the month you feel as if luck is on your side.
