My. Happy. Place. This issue especially, but really every issue, I am so thankful and grateful for all the amazing people in my life that make doing Portfolio so much fun. From amazing family and friends, to the best Portfolio family of advertisers, thank you all for your admiration, your love and your continued support. As the holiday season approaches, and traffic thickens, remember to have patience. Just breathe, enjoy “your happy place” when you can and cherish your loved ones, whether they are human or your four-legged family! When I need to find myself, I always seek the sea. There is something about hearing the sound of the ocean and staring out into that blank horizon that helps me clear my head. Write me, and tell me where your happy place is. I would love to hear from you. It’s party time! Big or small, create your own magical moments with friends and family. Florida has the best weather this time of year to host outdoor celebrations under the stars! Our party train began at sunrise on the beach for an early morning breakfast surf sesh. Next, we crashed a small dinner party for old high school classmates that were home from college. The setting was a quaint, yet breathtaking, little informal get-together under beautiful old oaks that were backlit by moonlight and candles. We grabbed our dancing shoes just before sunset for an outdoor celebration at the Emmon’s beautiful pool party, complete with synchronized swimmers. Guests enjoyed light fare, laughter and a stunning alfresco setting. And of course, my favorite was watching sweet Isaiah chase butterflies at an adorable garden party under giant banyan trees eating delicious cookies and cakes from Frostings! So whatever your style, taste or mood, we hope you will eat, drink and be merry this holiday season because enjoying life is the best gift of all!

Choosing the Right Treatment for Sports Injuries Get Back in The Game in Half the Time

Y

ou’re playing a sport, exercising, or being creative with a hobby and… BAM! Pain starts somewhere, generates through your body, and stops you in your tracks. You rest for a while and try again. The same pain continues. After an annoying attempt to rectify the situation on your own, you call your doctor. Then you wait for the appointment, return of x-rays, prescriptions of anti-inflammatories, referrals, and a regiment of a few generic stretches. Meanwhile, your sport, exercise, or hobby is still on hold and you still have pain. So you try another route…a good chiropractor, another doctor, or even a great physical therapist. You have finally found the right combination of practioners to treat you but, it’s now 10-12 weeks later, and you’re still not back in your game. What if there was a better way? A faster way? What if there was a practitioner who could see you immediately? One who could assess and/or diagnose, provide the medical advice, the manual therapy, and the right exercises specifically for your body and your injury to return you to your activity in half the time? 22

November-December 2015

A physical therapist is legally permitted to evaluate and treat “off the street.” In other words, you don’t need a referral from a doctor. They are trained in differential diagnosis, determining if an injury requires physical therapy, or if a doctor is needed. Once that diagnosis is determined, a Manual Physical Therapist can provide the soft tissue and joint mobility work needed to begin your recovery process. The physical therapist now becomes your exercise specialist. Those are all the components you need…from one amazingly specialized person. Joanne Duncanson is a licensed physical therapist and certified personal trainer with specialization in Manual Physical Therapy. She has dedicated more than twenty years concentrating on orthopedic and sports medicine. Joanne utilizes a vast, variety of manual therapy, specialized exercises, and neuromuscular re-education techniques from years of continuing education work in her field. She has studied the specifics of running injuries, rehab and technique, and offers video gait analysis to break down running deficiencies which may be causing

injury. In addition, Joanne utilizes Gray Cook’s Functional Movement Screen and System, which is used all over the world in all sports from high school to college, as well as, Olympic and professional level athletes. Independently practicing as a physical therapist, you can find her sharing space at S.T.A.R. Pilates Studio located in Miracle Mile in Vero Beach. So, why put the healing on hold? Choosing the right therapy options may reduce your healing time…keeping you in the game longer! The Most Wonderful Time of the Year…Or Is It?

‘T

is the season for family gatherings, holiday meals, gift shopping, being thankful and celebrating our blessings. However, for many, the more realistic holiday scenario looks like this: spending hours at different grocery stores finding all the ingredients for the holiday meal which takes days to prepare and 20 minutes to eat. Cleaning the house and preparing for the guests, which all comes undone in a matter of hours. Fighting for a parking space to brave an overcrowded store on an endless search for the perfect gift. Waiting in lines to pay for purchases while the kids are hungry and complaining. Entertaining family that brings back memories of a painful childhood. Being alone without friends or family near. Not knowing where the money will come from to cover the gifts charged to an almost-maxed-out credit card. Feeling pressured to please everyone, meet deadlines, or socialize in party situations in which you feel uncomfortable…sound familiar? Often, the holidays leave people feeling depleted, overwhelmed, and spent. We have moments of fun and laughter, but the stress wears us down and we start the New Year off happy that it’s all behind us. But is it really? Richard Lazarus, PhD, was a psychologist who dedicated his life’s work to understanding the effects of stress beyond the well-known fight or flight model described by Dr. Hans Selye. Dr. Lazarus’s research revealed that what most impacts our health and wellbeing is not the traumatic major life events like divorce, death, loss of a job, and the like, but rather how we handle “daily hassles,” a term he coined to describe the nuisances we face in our everyday lives. Driving in traffic, waiting, minor arguments, misplacing our keys and job dissatisfaction are just a few examples of such hassles. Physiologically, if we are constantly frustrated, angry, worried, etc., our bodies release an abundance of stress hormones like cortisol along with inflammatory chemicals. The prolonged exposure to these chemicals can cause health problems ranging from pain to insomnia, and obesity to heart disease.

We need to stay healthy and not let stress get the best of us, but how? First, we must explore our usual response to our daily hassles. If you find yourself feeling easily annoyed, irritated, disappointed, mentally or physically exhausted, then you need effective ways to mitigate your stress. Daily hassles aren’t reasons people usually seek professional help from a therapist, so other alternatives become necessary. Our approach to helping patients feel less-stressed is multi-faceted. We often recommend supplements that can give the body a helping hand. Some people need adrenal support, while others may need l-theanine or GABA to help them feel calm. We offer acupuncture, which has been shown to activate the para-sympathetic nervous system and release feel-good brain chemicals, while reducing inflammation. Additionally, we utilize NET (Neuro-Emotional Technique), which helps people stop becoming upset by stressful situations. We also recommend at home methods like guided imagery or meditation to help patients restore a balanced mind. Let us help you create peace and calm during the holidays and the New Year. Military Moms Prayer Group Local Women Caring for Deployed Soldiers

P

auline Adams is a woman on a mission—a military mission. Her dream is to make sure that U.S. troops deployed around the world have a holiday to remember. That’s why she has teamed up with the Military Moms Prayer Group, a local nonprofit organization that supports the troops through prayer and annual gift box drives for the holidays. Through the group’s efforts, an estimated 14,500 gift boxes have been shipped to U.S. servicemen and women in war zones or at sea since 2006. This year, 2000 gift boxes are slated to reach soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen in time for Christmas through the prayer group’s 10th Annual Holidays for Heroes drive. Over the last four years, Pauline, owner of I’ll Never Tell Jewelry at 3351 Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, has raised $37,500 for the Military Moms Prayer Group through the sale of heart-shaped “Braveheart Pins.” The pins, which are encrusted with red-white-and-blue crystal, sell for $12, with all proceeds benefiting the work of the prayer group. For men, Pauline also offers an American Eagle lapel pin/tie tac for $10. Pauline has come up with another gift idea to benefit the prayer group’s outreach to the troops: two hand-painted ornaments, emblazoned with flags, Swarovski crystal, and patriotic messages. One is inscribed, “Home of the Free because of the Brave.” The other proclaims a promise from the Psalms: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). The ornaments, which sell for $25 to benefit the prayer group, come with a special heart-shaped stand. They can be displayed year-round. “The ornaments are another way of communicating the message that we’re not going to forget our soldiers,” says Pauline, the wife of a Vietnam veteran and mother of two sons, one of whom served in the Navy and the other in the Marines. As for the verse from Psalm 33, she adds, “That verse perfectly sums up the spirit of the Military Moms Prayer Group: every week they pray for safety and blessings for our troops and our country. No matter what our faith, each of us can relate to that.” 28

November-December 2015

Ultimately, says Pauline, we each know in our hearts that we continue to have our freedom because of the sacrifices of our sons and daughters in uniform. “We can’t support them without the support of the community,” says Pauline. “I’ve found that people care deeply and are looking for a way to reach out to the troops. These ornaments and pins are a simple way to say thank you to our courageous servicemen and women—the true ‘brave hearts’ who keep our country safe.” For more information, call Pauline at (772) 231-1148 or contact the Military Moms Prayer Group at (772) 231-2221, www.militarymomsprayergroup.com. The interdenominational group meets from 5-6pm Thursdays at Christ Church (next door to Vero Bowl and behind Outback). www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Catching Up with Local Big Wave Skimmer and Surfer, Brad Domke

N

o one likes an approaching hurricane...unless you’re a surfer. Hurricane Joaquin’s swell was a clarion call for local “surf/skim” hero Brad Domke to return to his “fav” local spot—Wabasso Beach. Originally from Anna Maria Island on Florida’s West Coast, Brad has been drawn to the water since the age of two and dreamt of being a big wave surf star after receiving his first skimboard at 12. Now 25 years old, Brad was a Top 5 Nominee (and fan favorite) to win the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave (XXL) Billabong Ride of the Year for 2015, by riding a giant wave at Puerto Escondido, Mexico, on his finless skimboard. Brad’s followers on Instagram include Kelly Slater and Tony Hawk. Mr. Domke sits down with Portfolio to tell us his story... Q: Do you prefer skimming or surfing? A: I usually go with what the waves are doing and either use my skimboard or surfboard. Q: What is your favorite local beach? A: Wabasso, for sure, and “somewhere” near Sebastian Inlet! (He jokes about not revealing his secret spot!) Q: Who are your favorite surfers or skimmers that have inspired you? A: Jake and Sam, some brothers that are rad. I love getting feedback from real people that may not even be surfers and from sharing my videos. 30

November-December 2015

Q: Who do you like to surf with? A: Surfing with all my boys back home is always a good time. Q: What advice would you give? A: Live the dream, and follow your passion but also make sure that what you do financially supports your lifestyle. You also need lots of patience. Just keep doing what you love and what makes you happy. Q: What are some of the biggest waves you’ve encountered? A: Tahiti and Mexico were definitely the biggest waves so far. It took a week to ride that big wave at Teahupoo! It’s all up to what the ocean dictates. Being in the right place at the exact right time is what it’s all about. Q: What was it like to surf the biggest wave ever ridden on a skimboard?

A: You have to respect the ocean. Most of the big waves break either on reefs or shallow sandbars. Some of the biggest waves are beasts, and Teahupoo is heavy blue water. When the opportunity to surf a big wave comes, you have to believe you can do it, be ready and most of all, be smart. I trust my Exile Skimboard for each of those rides. Q: What exciting projects are you working on? A: The Brad Domke Project is a reality TV show produced by Henrique Daniel of H. Daniel Films for Globo-SAT/Channel OFF Brazil (Canal OFF Brazil). The show is being produced for the largest television audience in South America and will début this Spring on Brazil’s première Action Sports Network; CANAL OFF. Turtle Nesting News The Numbers Are In!

I

ndian River County beaches aren’t just for visiting tourists. They are for visiting sea turtles too! Traditionally, nesting sea turtles return to the same beaches they were born on to lay their eggs. Big efforts, county-wide, have been made to keep the beaches protected during nesting season so we can have high reproductive success rates. Here’s the skinny for this season.

Nests: Loggerhead - 5,229 Green - 1,735 Leatherback - 50 There were 1,924 turtle crawls this year which had a negative interaction with an obstruction causing her not to nest. Some of these obstructions include dune crossovers, beach furniture or recreational equipment, and seawalls. We had 116 reported hatchling disorientations across the county. All of these were caused by artificial lights illuminating the beach. Please remember to consider reducing your outdoor beachfront lighting during turtle nesting season to prevent this from happening. Lastly, a total of 55 turtle stranded within the county borders. One-fifth were found in the lagoon and died due to boat strikes.

Want to Get Involved? Here’s how you can help from March 1st - October 31st: • Turn off beachside white lights • Remove beach furniture at night • Whatever you take to the beach, take it back home • Put your trash in waste bins • Use red flashlights while walking on the beach at night • Keep your distance if you see a nesting sea turtle or hatchlings 32

November-December 2015

Big News and Most Important! We had a record green turtle nesting year. In 2013, the county experienced a massive increase in green turtle nests, which coincided with massive increases in green turtle nesting statewide. Green turtles are known to have a bi-annual nesting pattern leaving the possibility for an extremely high nesting year again in 2015-which happened! This year, the county experienced its highest ever number of green turtle nests since county-wide sea turtle monitoring began. There were a total of 322 more nests this year than seen in 2013. Researchers and conservationists believe that this increase in green turtle nesting may be from the consequences of the federal protection, under the endangered species act, implementation in 1973. Marine turtles are estimated to sexually mature in 25-30 years. Meaning, turtles born in the late 70’s may just now be nesting for the first time on our beaches. We hope to learn more about our nesting population in the future as we continue monitoring our beaches for many years to come, instructed under the IRC habitat conservation plan. We are fortunate to live in our own little paradise, where we can experience nature anywhere we go, especially on our beautiful beaches. We share the beach with all sea life, especially our nesting turtles, and the best way to help them thrive is to enjoy our turtles from a distance. The Kitchen Belle In-Home Personal Chef for Daily Meals and Holiday Entertaining Inspired by Mom

M

y name is Mary Catherine Morton. My friends call me MC. I was born and raised in Vero Beach, and I am a 2002 graduate of St. Edwards School. In 2007, I graduated from Johnson & Wales University of Charlotte, North Carolina with a culinary degree. I have worked in many different types of culinary facilities, such as Old Edwards Inn (Highlands, NC), various upscale restaurants, as well as a very well-known catering company in Charlotte. My mother, Sally Morton, was a fantastic chef. I watched her very carefully in the kitchen when she was either prepping dinner for us on a regular school night or if she was prepping for a big cocktail party for her friends. She never told me this, but I knew for a fact, just by watching her, that when you put your heart and soul into cooking and event planning (down to which toothpicks to use for the olive bowl) that everything comes together like a beautiful jigsaw puzzle. She is the reason why I started this company a year ago, she was our Kitchen Belle. I understand there’s a need for a personal chef for people that simply don’t have the time to prepare healthy meals for their family and also for when you are entertaining. Meeting my client’s culinary needs is very important to me. Learning your personal tastes, your likes and dislikes and any special dietary needs is the best part of my job. In just one day, I can come into your home and prepare a week’s worth of delicious healthy meals and I will even do the dishes! After our initial consultation and menu planning, I do the grocery shopping, all the prep and cooking in your home and clean up. By the time you get home from work, your meals will be ready and I will leave your kitchen cleaner than you left it. Throwing a party? Call me! I also prepare food for parties up to 150 guests and dinner parties up to 10 guests. I have a great staff of servers, bartenders and valet, if needed. Gift certificates are also available. Give the gift of a delicious home cooked meal! It’s a great gift for new homeowners, expecting parents, birthdays and anniversaries.

Cork Wine & Sake Bar was recently reopened by Vero Beach native, Rusty Cappelen, and Cork’s original owner, Brian Curley, in August. Cork has a completely new look, feel, drinks and a light menu. Current owners, Brian and Rusty have designed a new wine list that caters to everyone’s favorites, and also introduces new wines from around the globe. Cork now features nine beers on tap, as well as bottles of domestics, imports, and a large craft beer selection including some local breweries. The most interesting addition to the bar is their Sake menu. Each week, they infuse sake with fresh fruit, which is served as a Saketini. This is by far their most popular drink item. You can choose a variety of Sake based cocktails, including Sake Screwdrivers, Sake Greyhounds, and many more. The food selection includes appetizers, nightly specials and a weekly dessert special. 5:00pm - Close, 7 Days a Week Live Music Wednesday - Saturday Modern One Shopping Plaza 2101 Indian River Blvd, Suite 105 Vero Beach (772) 217-2326

Beads Galore, But So Much More Custom Designed. Hand-Crafted. One of a Kind. A Bead Above Celebrates Ten Years.

“I

t is like a candy store!” “This is not what I was expecting.” Two of my favorite client reactions when entering the store for the first time. Other beautiful words spoken include, “Oh, wow!” and “I want everything!” these words, and the sighs fill my soul with joy. As a young woman, I dreamed of a place like this. First, as an aspiring jewelry designer, I dreamed of shopping in a place like this. Eventually, my dream expanded to a realization that if I wanted it, I would have to build it. I did, one inch of beads at a time. Ten years later, I can say that those inches are now miles of necklaces and bracelets. It is so easy to get inspired in Vero Beach. Light is reflected differently here. Colors are brighter and sharper due to minimal air pollution. Each day is a new color combination to see in a rich sunrise and even more lovely sunsets. The bright blue skies above crisp green grass and rolling ocean waves fuel my imagination. The handcrafted jewelry designs are a reflection of this perspective. Vero Beach is paradise. Each day we celebrate a happy business in a happy place. It is a privilege to serve you. It is an honor when people bring their cherished jewelry here for repair. It’s even more fun working together to create something new and fashionable with old things sitting in the back of a jewelry box. These keepsakes are sometimes lonely, longing for a new life. Each day is like a treasure hunt. I love to hear the stories. I love introducing you to gemstones you have never heard of before. It thrills me every time a patron returns to pick up their “new” favorite thing. Services include custom jewelry design, stone replacement, beads, parts, components and supplies.

Take Me Home. Kurt Stevens, Country Music’s rising star, talks inspiration, The Ryman and his celeb crush.

H

is sweet smile and positive energy had us completely captivated before he even started talking. As we sit down for lunch, Kurt Stevens couldn’t have been more down-to-earth and approachable in his board shorts, favorite rum t-shirt, and the thought of hitting the swells for some sweet post-hurricane surf on his mind. It’s no surprise that Kurt is quickly making his way up the Country Music ladder, with the encouragement of our very own hometown chart topper, Jake Owen. In fact, Kurt’s EP album was produced by Eric Durrance, who worked with Jake during the early stages of his career and who co-wrote the hit “Eight Second Ride.” Classical piano, his father, and an incredible promise he made to a dying woman are key components to the inspiration that led Kurt to choose music as his career. “Growing up, my mom’s best friend, Terri Jean Rotondo, was the first person besides my parents that always wanted to hear me play. It hit me pretty hard when she was diagnosed with cancer. She was a strong woman and she beat it—but then it came back. I was playing Elton John on the piano one day and she was in the kitchen with my mom. My mom was in tears and Terri called out to me. “Kurt, I need to ask you a favor. Will you do me the honor of playing at my service? I only have a week left.” I just started crying and said, of course. I rewrote the song, ‘Candle in the Wind’ specifically

38

for her. Terri told me before she passed, “this is the greatest gift I could ever give you.” At the time, I didn’t understand what she meant. I mustered up every ounce of confidence I had. I got up, I performed at her service, and I nailed it. I didn’t miss a note. I couldn’t believe that I didn’t mess up. From that moment on, I never got nervous performing or recording. That’s when I realized how truly special that gift she gave me was.” Kurt’s eyes light up with the mention of the possibility of one day his name headlining at THE RYMAN. “I love the raw effect music can have on people. I learned from the effect that my favorite musical influences (Ray Charles, Elvis, Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Eric Church, Stevie Nicks, and the Allman Brothers) had on me.” Kurt comes off so calm, cool, and collected when he talks about juggling a full college schedule, PIKE fraternity life, touring, his music, and his long distance girlfriend. He did blush a little when we asked him about his celebrity crush, Taylor Swift. “I just think she’s awesome. If I could take the stage with her and Kenny Chesney, it would be a dream come true.” By Ashley Franke Check out Kurt Stevens - EP by Kurt Stevens https://itun.es/us/z09eInstagram @KurtStevensMusic www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Pursuing A Passion for Photography

G

rowing up on the coast made it easy to fall in love with the ocean. As a kid, I played team sports, but surfing, fishing and diving quickly took over in my early teenage years. I was fortunate enough that my parents had a house on the ocean just north of the “Tracking Station.” Every morning I would wake up early to check the surf before school. Although I was never very interested in school, I anxiously awaited my art class. As a student, I was really into painting and ceramics. Photography was also my passion but I just never gave it a shot until a little later in life. Starting out with film cameras was fun in the beginning until I started traveling more. I purchased my first digital SLR camera when I was 25 years old. At the time, I worked for a dive operation in the Bahamas that specialized in feeding tiger sharks. I worked with some of the world’s best-known underwater photographers, such as Stephen Frink and Brian Skerry from National Geographic. My girlfriend at the time

40

November-December 2015

was also an amazing photographer. She inspired and encouraged me to pursue my passion more seriously. In 2009, I moved to the Middle East after taking a job working for the Royal Family of Qatar. This is where I really started to enjoy doing landscape photography. Living in a large city surrounded by nothing but desert, there wasn’t much to shoot. However, at dusk the desert dunes would light up with the most amazing colors–deep bordeaux reds, purples and oranges would make for some very dramatic images. Mosques, old abandon forts, tents where tribal families lived and roaming camels, were always subjects I enjoyed shooting. In 2011, I left the Middle East and returned to south Florida. I took a couple photography workshops while I worked as a boat captain. In 2013, I moved to Costa Rica to work for Four Seasons as a private surf coach/guide. My job was to take families on surf trips throughout the Guanacoste Province. Here, I took every

opportunity I could to pull out my camera to shoot sunsets of empty beaches and to capture Costa Rica’s amazing wildlife. This was truly a photographer’s paradise! After Costa Rica, I travelled to Fiji in 2014, and started shooting portrait photography, especially children. The ocean and landscapes of Fiji were stunning, however, it was the natives that really made Fiji special. The Fijians are the happiest and friendliest people I have ever met. Although the surf was world-class right out front of my “bure” where I was living, I would often find myself wandering to the neighboring islands just to photograph the villagers, capturing images of their everyday way of life. I am still pursing my passion for photography. I love the adventure of traveling and capturing life through my lens! Check out my images at www.scampbellphotography.com or email me at surfishdive@yahoo.com. By Sandy Campbell www.portfolio-verobeach.com

ave you ever had an uneven haircut? Or an uncaring hairstylist? Guests should feel like royalty when they are at a salon. A professional salon experience should be relaxing, enjoyable and stress-free. Getting a great haircut or a fabulous up-do should give the client the added confidence boost needed to land the job or kneel on one knee to ask those four little words, “Will You Marry Me?” The key to every successful visit is the hair artist’s ability to communicate clearly with the client, while taking a sincere approach to listening to what he or she wants. Meeting the guests’ hair needs is top priority. If the hair artist is not gathering the correct information and educating the guest on the latest trends and essential products, the end result is likely to be disastrous. Education is vital to the beauty industry and must be expressed with passion and excitement to those who want to be the best versions of themselves. Being greeted by name upon arrival and doted on by a unified team is an essential part of an excellent salon experience. Not only is it hospitable, it is a wonderful feeling to be catered to and held in such high regard. A doting team of courteous, smiling individuals with vision is sure to comfort hearts. Eminence Hair Design, conveniently located 20 minutes north of Vero Beach, proudly serves guests as if they were royalty. With careful consideration to each need, each guest acquires a renewed sense of self. Having a professional salon experience with passionate hair artists makes all the difference. While walk-ins are accepted, reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling the salon from Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

L

ara Buday is a comprehensive creative for your personalized photo shoot needs. With recent photography projects with Verola Studios and Rosey Posey Photography, there is nothing Lara can’t accomplish when it comes to a customized photo assignment. Her first project was a maternity shoot for a young couple’s first baby at Up the Creek Farms in Malabar. Photographed by Dasha Epova with Verola Studio, Buday took on this task with endless imagination and Alice in Wonderland flair, creating a dream world fit for a precious princess. Teacups strewn through the trees and delightful details otherwise accessorizing the space, Buday addressed and stylized all potential points of interest, including a backdrop of baby pictures of mom-and-dad-to-be. 48

November-December 2015

In addition to designing, stylizing, and staging, this clever creative type has modeled for her shoots. Lara’s versatile look ranges from Great Gatsby high glamour to low-key boho style. Her most recent shoot features a renovated trailer- turned-cocktail-bar on the outside, photo booth on the inside. From Mimosas and Moonshine, to Rosey Posey Photography and Boho Garden Crowns, the trailer offers a mere glimpse of her original talent. Simply put, Lara is able to showcase her creativity through her clients’ vision by taking their simple dreams and turning them into reality. She’s built phenomenal connections with local vendors, such as Classy Cupcakes, Rebecca Lind Professional Makeup Artist, Topknots by Jamie Lynn, Artwork by Robin Miller, and Seahorse Lane Boutique. True to small town ingenuity

and connectedness, each of these artists has helped Buday along the way, contributing his or her own talent to her elegant—often outrageous— photo shoots. When she’s not working on a photo project, Lara is working as an event coordinator with Vero’s local wedding planner and florist, Lara Fiorelli, owner of Lara’s Theme. Whether you’re looking to capture the precious moments of your first baby, the romance of your engagement, the passion of boudoir, or the classic penchant of family portraits, Lara is the talent you require. H.A.L.O. Celebrates Nine Years of Helping Shelter Animals Live and Overcome

H

.A.L.O. Non-Profit No Kill Recue Shelter is celebrating nine years nurturing our mission to “help animals live and overcome.” H.A.L.O. believes that all animals deserve a chance at life. The dedicated staff and volunteers work together to prevent the senseless killing of thousands of companion animals each year in Indian River County and beyond. For so many animals, H.A.L.O. is the beginning of hope…hope for the unwanted, that they will receive all necessary medical, physical and emotional care regardless of age, medical condition or temperament. Each year H.A.L.O. makes a commitment to provide safety and love while waiting for forever families, however long it takes. This year alone, H.A.L.O. has saved over 2000 displaced animals. H.A.L.O. Rescue Shelter is solely supported by private contributions, as well as, H.A.L.O.’s other services which include

grooming, pest control, an on-site boutique, our thrift store, and our adoption center and boutique located inside the Indian River Mall. Tax deductible donations along with service income go directly to the care of the animals as well as furthering the vision of H.A.L.O.’s “field of dreams”—our sanctuary where animals can live out their lives in a wholesome environment. It will allow us to provide an overflow facility, and will act as a permanent home for any animals that fail to be adopted. This beautiful new facility will also serve as a loving forever home for abandoned pets after the relocation, or death of their owners. All of us at H.A.L.O. look forward to a better future for unwanted pets. H.A.L.O. and so many of H.A.L.O.’s friends are committed to making Indian River County a No Kill County! Our county, like so many counties elsewhere, should be a safe haven for these precious animals. We look to all of you, people that believe as we at H.A.L.O. do, that companion animals are our dearest friends and depend on us to provide them with an atmosphere of love and compassion. Join us in helping these animals thrive. To find out how to become a part of our lifesaving team or to make a donation, please visit us at www.HaloRescueFl.org.

HALO to the Rescue! A Lifesaving Gala Join us on November 14th at 7pm for HALO to the Rescue! A Lifesaving Gala Fundraiser! Celebrating nine years of no kill rescue and the thousands of lives that have been saved. Holiday Pet Wish List

T

he holidays present an opportunity to tell loved ones how much you appreciate them, including your pets. No holiday shopping would be complete without remembering them. Below are our TOP TEN suggestions to help keep them healthy and happy this holiday season and several are a gift to you too! 1. Add an extra walk to your day or create some additional play time. Being the center of your attention makes him or her feel loved. 2. Keep your pet free from ectopic parasites. A year’s worth of flea, tick and heart worm preventatives, prescribed from your veterinarian, makes it easy for you to both to adhere to a regular schedule. 3. Attire your pet with a decorative new leash, collar or harness, best suited for your animal’s size and breed, of course. 4. Microchip or establish other appropriate pet identification to ensure your pet can be returned to you should you and your pet become separated. 5. Purchase pet insurance or regularly contribute to a special fund for pet emergencies so you are always able to provide for your pet’s medical needs. Emergencies often come up unexpectedly. 6. Prepare for natural disasters, such as hurricanes and flooding, keeping their needs in mind. An emergency first aid kit; extra medication; food; bottled water; and a list of boarding facilities or hotels that allow pets should all be ready in advance. 7. Provide a balanced daily diet to keep your pet healthy. As you enjoy holiday meals with friends and family refrain from sharing with your pets. Many foods are toxic to pets while other foods are excessively rich or fatty, and can lead to gastroenteritis or pancreatitis. 8. Exercise with your pet. Pets benefit from exercise just as we do! You both will enjoy staying fit together. 9. Regularly schedule your pet’s physical exams every 6 to 12 months. Just as with children, regular exams are essential to keeping your pet healthy and current with necessary vaccinations. 10. Lastly, if you plan to expand your pet family, adopt a breed with a temperament that matches your family’s, including any pets you already have. Compatible personalities will ensure a harmonious home! For more tips on keeping your pet healthy during the holidays, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) at www.avma.org We at Indian River Animal Hospital hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Have you ever gone for a walk or taken a swim in the ocean on a cool, crisp fall morning in Vero Beach and thought to yourself—this is the perfect place to live? Hi, I’m Nathaniel Harrington, a professional surf and fine art photographer. You can find me on any given morning photographing the surf, our beautiful sunrises, and creatures from our community. I like to take a front row seat at the crack of dawn to capture stunning imagery which I now have the privilege of sharing with you in Portfolio. The most common reaction to my imagery is “that was taken here?!” Yes, we live in an amazing place, and with a front yard like the Atlantic Ocean, there’s hardly ever a dull moment! I’m excited to be able to share some of the best hidden treasures of Indian River County through my lens. Let’s get out and explore more! You can follow my work on

BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life

in the stars

The holiday season starts off with brightness in early November. Good cheer is in the air until the very end of November and especially around December 7. Make sure you don’t drink and drive after a holiday party. Enjoy the Full Moon in Cancer (where it is exalted) on Christmas Day. It is a wonderful time to open your heart and home to those you love. Happy Holidays to all! ARIES: In November, several planets move into Sagittarius, a fire sign, which Aries always gets along with well. This means luck will be on your side, and many opportunities should show up, related to both love and money. The New Moon on December 11th might bring about a trip, or at least some time off. You have a lot of energy this holiday season. You might feel a bit overworked, trying to get a lot accomplished in a short amount of time. Aries people are known for their energy, so you can handle the pressure. TAURUS: November 1st brings a lot of love energy to people born under the sign of Taurus. There are new beginnings in the relationship department for all of November, but especially during the first week of the month. There is a Full Moon on November 25th, which will highlight your personal finances. Just make sure you stay within your budget while shopping for gifts. Christmas Day is a particularly wonderful day, as the Full Moon sets you up for a snug and cozy holiday. GEMINI: November 13th would be a great day to make a major decision, as several planets are lined up to provide support for all your plans. November 25th is an intense day when something needs to be brought to the surface and released. The first week of December has you in a lighthearted party mood. Just don’t go overboard, and be especially careful on December 7th. There is a bit of a creative challenge headed your way in December, however, don’t let any big decision get in the way of enjoying the holiday season. CANCER: November starts off as a passionate month. Take advantage of this time, and get out and be with people, especially if you are single. It looks like something you have been working on for months is finally becoming a reality for you. You will be ready to celebrate by mid-December. Christmas Day is picture perfect for all home-loving Cancers, with the Full Moon in your sign. This will make for lots of warm feelings, so enjoy all the love coming your way. LEO: When the Sun enters Sagittarius on November 22nd, you will be feeling as if you are hanging out with all the right people. No one is better at keeping everyone entertained than a Leo. However, if you are with a group of people around November 20th, you might be more blunt than usual. Leos love to spoil those they love, and in December it will be extremely easy to feel super generous. Make sure that on Christmas Day you allow the generosity to flow to you. VIRGO: Mark November 1st on your calendar, as it is a great day for all Virgos. By mid-November, you should receive good news about a project you have been working on for months. The reward is well-deserved and no one works harder than you. The Full Moon on November 25th has you pulled in two directions. Make sure you realize it is impossible to be perfect, and you might have to remember to take care of yourself first. The New Moon on December 11th has you itching for changes on the home front. Wait until the start of 2016 before you make any major decisions.

November-December 2015

LIBRA: November is a particularly nice month for all Libras. From November 8th until December 4th the planet of love will be in your sign, so you should be feeling as if your personal magnetism is quite high. Then Mars, the planet of assertion, enters Libra on November 12th, so that will add some feisty energy to your personality. Overall, there is a lot of positive energy around you for the entire holiday season. Just be careful on December 20th, and don’t go overboard at a party. SCORPIO: Mercury, the planet of communication, will be in your sign for most of November, which will have you speaking your mind more than usual. Everything within you is committed to pursuing and practicing truth, but wait until November 10th when everyone appears more willing to hear what you have to say. On December 1st an impulsive period beings that lasts all month, so just be careful with regard to your spending. On New Year’s Eve, you might be having so much fun that you don’t know when to quit. Always remember it is best to leave a party when you are at the height of having a good time. SAGITTARIUS: You are just getting accustomed to having Saturn in your sign. Saturn brings lessons, and he will be in Sagittarius for two years. These next two years are perfect for building projects and presenting opportunities to showcase your talents. November 13th is an awesome day to schedule an interview, or apply for a raise. There is a lot of heightened energy in the air around December 10th. You might want to cross a line and start an argument, but try to sit back and think before you act. The Full Moon on Christmas will have you feeling sentimental. You’ll probably want to share stories about the past with family and friends. It is a wonderful time to remember loved ones who are no longer with us. CAPRICORN: Mark off November 13th and November 23rd in your calendar as days that are good for business. If you have been waiting for the right moment to present a plan, this would be the time to do it. You might be feeling a little testy around December 20th. You have a vision of how something should be, and someone else might have a totally different idea. It is the season to compromise. Just be open to new ideas, and you’ll have an awesome Christmas. AQUARIUS: November 11th is a powerful day for Aquarius. You will feel as if a chapter has ended, and you are able to turn the page on some issue that has been bugging you. Around Thanksgiving, you might feel a little tense because there is so much on your plate. You try to care about everyone and sometimes it is just impossible. This Christmas season should be truly memorable for you. There is a little bump in the road from December 7th – 11th, but it is smooth sailing for the rest of December into New Year’s Eve. PISCES: You do not enjoy drama, but there might be a little irritation in your life between November 2nd and November 8th. These snags are part of life, so do not over react. The Full Moon on November 25th has you feeling like you are being pulled in two directions. Make sure you take time to hang out with some cheerful friends to break up your heavy work schedule around Thanksgiving. The New Moon on December 12th has you starting a new project that you feel very passionate about. You will see the rewards for this later in 2016. Christmas Day is wonderful for Pisces, so enjoy! Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
