This is a special kind of production that ignites a sort of curiosity within creatives which asks, "how could I do that?" With monsters, combat, fantasy, and all of the heart and sincerity in between, this production tests your creative problem solving abilities to the max, and for this reason our production staff list looks long enough to be a phone book. It really did take a village.
Dungeons & Dragons invites the same kind of curiosity and exploration but of the self. If you could be anything, what would you be? In She Kills Monsters, young Tilly Evans is able to find solace in that very game by exploring her identity, challenging her bullies, and finding love. In her own world she feels strong, powerful and magical.
We now challenge you, fellow Adventurers, to join our voyage with an open heart and a curious mind! Through the mighty power of imagination, let us unite and celebrate our differences, embrace a journey of self discovery, and —most of all—have tons and tons of fun.
A Lifetime Member of Pentacle Theatre, MaryKate "Katie" began directing in 1979 with the musical Celebration. Other Pentacle credits include Almost Maine, Urinetown, Into the Woods, Godspell, Little Shop of Horrors, On the Verge, Painting Churches and The Foreigner. Acting credits include Strange Snow, Chapter 2 and Godspell (twice). She has worked on the play reading and costume committees, as well as the Directors' Forum, and twice on Pentacle's governing board. Katie has taught at Theatre for a New City in NYC, Linfield College, Children's Educational Theatre, and served as the Director at McKay High School. More recently straddling the pandemic, she directed Love, Loss and What I Wore for The Verona Studio, designed costumes for An Ideal Husband, Pentacle's first virtual production, and The Mousetrap, Pentacle's return to live performance. On weekends, she can be found in her garden or at the movies.
Emma has volunteered at Pentacle Theatre in various capacities for many years. Most recently, she assistant directed The Mousetrap and currently serves on the governing board. Primarily a performer, she was last seen as Sleeping Beauty in the Elsinore's Disenchanted! At Pentacle, she's most recently enjoyed the roles of Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia!, Pickles in The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and Little Sally in Urinetown. After having worked on this project with Katie for three years now, she is ecstatic to finally see it come to life.
David is originally from Orange County, California where he met his wife and wore sunglasses like a religion. He moved to Oregon in March of 2021 at the request of his sister Meg, a Willamette Alumni, and to enjoy the beautiful scenery that is Oregon. David is a self proclaimed funny man with a background in competitive improv who is working on adding on to his stage credits. He hopes that he doesn't fall, and if he does that you laugh.

Lexie Camacho is from Petaluma, CA, and has spent the past four years at Willamette University, where she got her BS in exercise and health sciences this spring. Her performing experience is pretty strictly limited to being an incurable band and choir kid, but her real-life experience as a stubborn little sister has her thrilled to be playing Tilly Evans. And yeah, she likes DnD.
Brent returns to Pentacle after being a part of the annual fundraiser show production of Cinderella. In high school, he was a part of many shows, including The 39 Steps and Newsies When not on the stage, Brent enjoys nerdy stuff like DnD and video games, plus cooking.
Melissa is a QA Engineer from Miami, FL. This is her first time on the Pentacle Theatre's stage and she is thrilled about it! Most recently, she has played the role of Miss Honey in Matilda the Musical at The Majestic Theatre. She has also been a part of the ensemble in All Together Now: A Broadway Revue and Mamma Mia! at Albany Civic Theater. She loves snuggling her two cats, going on hikes, foraging mushrooms, visiting the coast, playing video and board games, singing and watching movies with her husband Jonathan.
Shay Haase is excited to return to the Pentacle stage for a second time this season, having recently played Olivia in Twelfth Night. Past favorite roles include Roz Hay (Moon Over Buffalo), Catherine Simms (The Foreigner), D’Artagnan (The Three Musketeers: A British Panto), Brandi Winters (Brandi the Vampire Staker), Johanna (Sweeney Todd), Miss Scarlet (Clue the Musical), Sally Applewhite (It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play), Lena (The Roof: The Room Parody), and Lisa Ashley (Werewolf of London). When not on stage, she lives and dies by the roll of the dice against the real BBEG for adult DnD games—scheduling!—while spoiling her two dogs rotten. Shay is thrilled to go on this adventure alongside such a talented (and whackadoodle!) party and incredibly honored to be able to tell Agnes’s story.
This is Tyler’s first show at Pentacle Theatre. Previous theater-related work experience includes as Lucas in Laughter on the 23rd Floor; Ricky in In Front of a Live Studio Audience; Peter in Troll, Too; Foggy the Whip Master in Of Cogs and Circuits; The Prince in The Godmudda and as various roles in Lives of the Saints Tyler is married to Shay Haase, works as an Automation Analyst at Salesforce and enjoys DnD, disc golf and woodworking.

This is Dustin's second show at Pentacle Theatre and he could not be more thrilled that the curtain is up once more to delight audiences with a play centering around the world of DnD. Dustin graduated from Western Oregon University in 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Acting. Dustin has had a desire to be in this play since learning about it in Theater History class at WOU. He wishes to thank audiences for coming back to the theater while we still adapt to a post-COVID world. Remember, your Bag of Holding is not for popcorn!
Born and raised in Salem, Ian has been acting in some capacity most of his life. He attended a performance artsfocused middle school and was a member of his high school thespian troupe where he participated in almost every production during his time there. This is his first Pentacle Theatre production and he is thrilled to be a part of such an amazing group of people.
Arella returns to Pentacle after previously being a part of Willy Wonka, Dr. Dolittle, Mary Poppins and Beauty and The Beast. Arella has been actively dancing since she was a kid, and occasionally takes classes in Portland. When she isn’t taking classes, she teaches baby ballet and coaches gymnastics. She would like to thank her mom for convincing her to jump back into acting and return to the stage.
Emilie returns to Pentacle Theatre after playing the role of Gracie Westmoreland in Yellow (2019). She was previously involved in the theater department at Central High School, mainly working as a sound technician. Emilie is a biology and health teacher at South Albany High School. She recently completed her bachelor's degree and is beginning her master of arts in teaching at Western Oregon University. She is also active in the cheerleading community, assisting in coaching the Western Oregon University squad. Emilie spends most of her free time with her family in Monmouth, or at home with her fiancé (probably watching a cheesy reality tv show).
Kate Schmidt is an actor, director, and writer whose work has been nominated in festivals such as LA Femme Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, and Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival.
After earning her BFA in Theatre and Performing Arts at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) College of the Performing Arts in Hollywood, Kate worked in the film and entertainment industry in Hollywood, CA, creating content for companies such as I Love Scary Movies and Universal Studios Hollywood. She enjoys long walks on the beach, animal stampedes, kissing in the rain, raising the unholy dead and french vanilla Pirouettes.
This show is Mikayla’s first with Pentacle Theatre. Other theater-related work experience includes A Midsummer Night's Dream with Enlightened Theatrics and in Dracula at Keizer Homegrown Theater. Mikayla is a student at South Salem High School and enjoys singing and theater. She loves acting and is very interested in technical theater.
It’s “as if Priestley was writing about the climate-change crisis about to engulf us all. It feels like he anticipated the march toward political extremes, the rise of smug complacency and the fall of personal moral obligation. Characters in this show have endless trouble seeing how their own biases impedes their readings of facts; there are versions of this occurring right now on our streets right outside this theater.” Chicago Tribune

“Shrek, which draws from William Steig’s book about a lovable ogre and the DreamWorks animated movie that it inspired, is nonetheless a triumph of comic imagination with a heart as big and warm as Santa’s. It is the most ingeniously wacky, transcendently tasteless Broadway musical since The Producers, and more family-friendly …” USA Today

Music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Directed by Robert Salberg.Mathieu (he/she/they) has been waiting years to help tell this story and is thrilled to have She Kills Monsters be their return to Pentacle. They were last seen at Pentacle in Distracted and, prior to that, in Beauty and the Beast and Dearly Departed. The Verona Studio was their home theater until the world shut down. There they appeared in Straight White Men, The Father and Becky Shaw. They assistant directed Life Sucks and directed Every Brilliant Thing Recently, they appeared in two staged readings with Theater 33 including the very personal, More of You. As well as playing several monsters, they also created original music for She Kills Monsters They have various TV and film credits and studied at The Groundlings and Playhouse West in Los Angeles. They are a proud queer parent to two future monster-slaying daughters and so glad you are here, not just at this show in this theater, but here in the world.
Although previously involved in Pentacle’s fundraiser shows Dr. Dolittle, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid, this is Marah’s first time on the stage at Pentacle Theatre. She started doing theater at 12 and has been enthusiastically finding opportunities at various different community theaters and camps around Salem ever since. She currently works full-time at a warehouse as well as running the company's social media, and on the evenings she is not at rehearsal she tries to be at the food share.
Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who had lived here since time immemorial.
In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience and their present and future right to this land.

She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition is one of the more dynamic productions that the Pentacle Theatre has brought to the stage in quite some time. As the board liaison to this cast, I have had the chance to feel the energy that will be brought to this show. It is infectious…
The drama-comedy tells the story of a young woman who has recently lost her little sister in a car accident. A year later, she stumbles across a Dungeons and Dragons module in her sister’s room that gives her a look into the life of the sister she finds she really didn’t know. The story ahead provides a wonderful journey of self-discovery, as well as an opportunity to experience the life of her sister.
While the theme includes tragedy, it is also very comedic as it moves through reality and fantasy where DnD comes to life. While set in 1990s Ohio, the show offers a nostalgic trip that is also very relevant to many of the issues we continue to deal with today. Openness, tolerance and resilience are the messages driven within this wonderfully creative and thoughtful story.
She Kills Monsters will not disappoint. You will be thoroughly entertained, engaged and quite possibly emotionally connected as if you were a part of the story itself. We invite you to take that positive energy with you after the show and share it with family, friends and community.
