Pentacle Theatre

DIRECTOR'S LETTER

I have been a fan of this funny show since my husband and I first discovered the Mischief Theatre Company and their Goes Wrong Show a few years ago. When the opportunity arose to direct The Play That Goes Wrong at Pentacle I jumped at the chance—but only after checking in with our Technical Director, Chris Benham. I believe this show may be the most technically complex we have ever presented at Pentacle, and it has certainly been a challenge. But as always, the Pentacle family have rallied around and gotten things done! I am so grateful to everyone who stepped up to pitch in—sometimes at the last minute—to make this show a reality. And of course, I cannot forget my amazing, talented and brave cast. Every one of them brings their own unique and wonderful perspective to their characters. They have worked very hard and have the bruises to prove it. And while the set is another character in this show, my hardworking run crew are the ones who bring it to life. This show literally would not happen without them. The Play That Goes Wrong has been a joy to direct. I cannot remember ever laughing quite so hard at a readthrough and it has only gotten better since. I hope you enjoy watching the show every bit as much as we have enjoyed working to bring it to the Pentacle stage.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER My Dear Friends of Pentacle, We've made it to the end of our first full season since COVID shut our doors in 2020, and things are looking so, so bright. Attendance is growing, volunteer engagement is high, and we are looking to the future with hope. I'm not sure I could ask for more as an outgoing Board President. I'd like to use my final President's Corner the same way I used my first, which is to share my gratitude for those who made this year a success amidst a mountain of challenges. Running a theatre always takes a village, but this year required a unique combination of courage and passion, and these are just a few of the people who stepped up to the plate.

Thank you... To Christie Smith and Quinn Connolly, for the support and consistency you have provided to our theatre and to me personally. I couldn't have steered this ship without you there to hold down the ropes and tell me where the wheel was. To Kimberly Houser Taylor, for adding your unique talents and friendly face to our box office. Welcome to the Pentacle family! We are so happy to have you. To Chris Benham and Steven Trahan, for your courageous leadership, for blowing our minds with your talents, and for continuing to move the needle on what this theatre is capable of. To Jeff Witt and Liz Rogers, for always saying "Yes! What do you need?" To Shay Haase and Branden Hume, for helping us get the word out about the magic going on here. Your expertise and shared resources have been monumental in bringing our audiences back. To Chris and Karen McCarty, for rebuilding our hospitality guild, and for putting wine back in our audience's hands. (I think they'll join me in thanking you on that one.) Thanks especially to Karen, for your fearless direction of Exit Laughing when the board had a last-minute slot to fill. To Laura Davis, Rachel McMillen Pratt and the members of the SRC, for leading one of the most well-received season selection processes I've ever witnessed. That is no small feat.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER To Katie Lindbeck, for being my right-hand woman. You orchestrated so much of what made this year successful behind the scenes, and I know we will continue to see the effects of your contributions for years to come. You really are the champion of this organization. To Heather Toller and David Ballantyne, on a personal note, for your shoulders to cry on. You saw me, heard me, and supported me in a unique way when I most needed it. I owe a lot to you, just for being there. To the 2023 Governing Board, for your thoughtful, optimistic leadership, and for your trust in me during uncertain times. I feel good knowing the theatre's near future is in your hands. To the 2023 Directors, for your creative, passionate leadership. You are the heart of our organization. To our volunteers, for dedicating your precious time and talents so that we can keep that heart beating. To our donors, for funding our passions so we can share our heart with the community. And to our patrons - that's you! - for partaking in the final product, the fruit of our labors. All this is for you. And I'm so glad you are here so that we can share it with you. My heart is bursting at the seams with love for you all. Thank you.

Emma Thurston Governing Board President

Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style.
