DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
A script about the exploration of gender and sexuality, which challenges the hegemony of the nuclear family structure — and its four hundred years old. You would be hard pressed to find a modern script which draws upon these themes more acutely, and more importantly, insightfully. Its age, as well as the metaphysical/magical realist nature of the world of the play aids in this aspect. The age gives us a separation from the context of the early modern era in which it was written and thereby allows us a wider perspective from which more can be observed. The metaphysical rules of the play’s universe are deeply moldable; controlled as they are by the wishes of the characters. Viola/Cesario wishes to present as male, and so almost immediately does, the other characters all accepting this reality. Feste disguises himself as a curate and so passes well enough to convince Malvolio he is one. Olivia wishes some version of Cesario would reciprocate her feelings, and so a near identical twin appears and does so. Cesario themself wishes for help in untangling the knotted love triangle they are caught in, and so Sebastian appears and does so in a roundabout way. This flow from the characters’ desires to the action of the plot makes subtext and motivation manifest. In working with the actors and in developing the design for the show we have sought to highlight that structure, as well as the contemporary relevances. It is rare in media to see relationships depicted beyond the heteronomrative binary, or to see characters who exist happily outside of traditional social structures and roles. It is amazing what a little contemporary music and clothing can do to clarify such things. I am so grateful to everyone who has made this show possible - the cast and crew, designers, theater staff and other volunteers who have all worked so hard to make this production happen. I could not have asked for a better cast more up to exploring this piece together. I hope our work speaks to people who have sometimes found classical pieces to be off-putting and inaccessible. Or for whom theater in general sometimes just feels like a thick fog of interchangeable kitchen sink dramas. There are so many stories out there to tell, and I hope you enjoy this old one with its fresh coat of paint.

Alice Mary Norton The family and friends of Alice Mary Norton honor her longtime commitment to Pentacle Theatre by sponsoring this production. Alice began volunteering at Pentacle in 1985 and immediately fell under its spell. Over the next 35 years, she was involved in a wide range of theatre support roles including building sets, stage management, sound, lights, props, play reading, and fund raising as the long-time Benefits Chairperson. She was also a familiar face to many as the cheerful lady in the jaunty hat who delivered Pentacle posters to businesses around town. Alice’s dedication and accomplishments were acknowledged in 1994 as the first recipient of the Claytene Vick Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2014, she was selected to be a Pentacle Lifetime Member. Alice loved volunteering – but even more she loved being part of the Pentacle family. So from her family and friends to you, we hope you enjoy all that live community theatre has to offer.

Pentacle Theatre
PRESIDENT'S CORNER Spring is known as the season of new beginnings, and to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, and regrowth. I can’t think of better symbolism to articulate the journey of our own Pentacle Theatre as we continue to move into our 2022 season. So many positive events have emerged over the last six to seven months as we have begun our reopening. One event that is currently top of mind is moving into our new office space over this past Easter weekend. The new space has so much appeal! It has significantly more public visibility than our previous location. The flexibility of this new space also allows for much more creative and exciting potential future uses. Having a theater office again also allows us to reclaim the lobby for patrons during productions. It also allows us to begin food and beverage concessions again. The Pentacle staff is working through the logistics to get these services back up and running as soon as possible. We are cautiously optimistic of the future. Our approach to reopening has been balancing the want to get back to normal with being mindful of the safety of our volunteers, actors, and patrons. This process will continue to evolve as we strive to having our theater back up and running at full capacity as soon as reasonably possible.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who had lived here since time immemorial. In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience and their present and future right to this land.
