Season 2024 | The Prom 5 MUSICAL NUMBERS

It’s long been studied that most people’s greatest fear is public speaking. Looking at the definitions of fear, I can see the connection of public speaking being something people dread. We are opening ourselves up to judgment by our peers, community and strangers. This can trigger a stress response, especially for those who are shy or may not have self confidence. Most people emerge from that experience and realize, “Hey, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” Public speaking is a very real and personal fear for many people.

FEAR (noun): An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or a threat.

FEAR (verb): To be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful or threatening.

I’ve long wondered why people are so fearful of differences in others when there is absolutely no effect on their lives or safety. This manufactured fear AND misunderstanding/miseducation of how others live their lives seems to be the root cause of the conflict in The Prom.

One of the greatest gifts of theater is that what we present on stage can, at times, be a reflection of our society. It’s an opportunity to look at ourselves in the mirror and reflect on our behaviors and beliefs. Theater allows an opportunity, in the most non-confrontational way, to experience and relate to someone who may be marginalized, discriminated against or judged, especially for those who may never have experienced such intense societal rejection.

Today we’re seeing fear-mongering like never before toward the LGBTQIA+ community. We’re accusing teachers of “indoctrination” by simply following state standards in education, attacking freedom of speech and the right to read books, and somehow conflating drag story time as dangerous.

Our community is stronger when we seek to understand; this is achieved when our minds are open and we practice humility and compassion.

I hope Emma and Alyssa’s story gives you perspective, makes you think, and touches your heart.

Roach Bright Lights SOCIETY If you have included Pentacle Theatre in your estate plans, we’d like to know and honor you here. Contact 503-485-4300 or email Steven; Executive_Director@PentacleTheatre.org. Honoring the generous individuals who have made a provision in their estate plans for Pentacle Theatre:

It is truly an impressive feat to reach a milestone like a 70th year (I feel qualified to make this claim since, like Pentacle, I was bor n in 1954!) As the theater reaches this remarkable achievement, I am compelled to reflect back on its history and the contributions made by the thousands of volunteers who not only kept the doors open for those years, but also ensured that the theater would thrive.

Those familiar with Pentacle’s history know that the idea of forming a community theater came from a group of Willamette University theater enthusiasts during a card game. In a scenario that seemed to come straight out of a Hollywood movie, the first production was performed in an old barn just off highway 22, with dressing rooms located in an attached chicken coop. Patrons sat on folding chairs donated by a local mortuary and enjoyed the classic comedy Blithe Spirit directed by one of Pentacle Theatre’s founders, Bob Putnam. From these very humble beginnings evolved the place we now think of as our theater “home.”

I would like to encourage our patrons and volunteers to take a closer look at several venues that capture some snippets of Pentacle history. At our downtown offices, you can view historical memorabilia, including photographs, posters, and set models designed by former technical director Tony Zandol. And downstairs in our theater lobby you can view a timeline of photographs, assembled by our history committee led by Cherie Ulmer, spanning from the earliest productions up through last year’s season.

And last, but not least, please join us as we celebrate 70 years of Pentacle Theatre history on July 13 at the Chemeketa Eola Event Center!
