The studio _team 503

The team

The jobs that we have shown above and many others which could not be included in this book for simple lack of space are the outcome of the work done by a large group of people without whom it would not have been possible to bring these projects to fruition. We would like to thank all of them for their dedication, their efforts, their talent and their enthusiasm. Some are not with us now, for one reason or another, but the fondness and friendship still remain.

I would like to thank Ana Iranzo, who was with us for many years. Josep Gil, María Chamorro, Alejandro Catalá and Juanma Aznar, with whom we continue to work on occasions.

Thanks to Roberto Hoffman, Juanma Sentamans, Melania Rodríguez, Juanjo García Oller and Luis Sánchez, who we haven’t seen for some time; to Amparo Ivars, Lorena López and Julio Alonso, who we have fond memories of; to Dídac Ballester, for his complicity and friendship, and to Jesús Herrero, who has gone from contributor to customer.

I must thank Ricardo Cañizares, Baptiste Pons and Mauro Gimeno, with whom we are currently sharing adventures and misadventures in the studio, for their dedication and support, and express my particular gratitude to Luisa San Juan and Suso Pérez, bonded by a long and fruitful relationship of over 20 years’ collaboration, and who have started to form part of the studio’s DNA.

Lastly I should like to recall Laura Varela, who left us definitively in November 2007 and whose smile is still there in the studio. Many, many thanks to you all.

The studio Therapeutic breaks

506

Hectic delivery deadlines, customers changing their strategy and the search for solutions to the design problems brought up by them are all things which condition the dynamics of the studio and force us to keep up a fast pace of work.

All these circumstances so often turn out in long days’ hard grind, in which minutes are given as much value as hours, producing times of great concentration on tasks where only the telephone breaks the resonant silence.

But suddenly something breaks up the atmosphere, a burst of laughter, a remark uttered aloud followed by joking replies or a general move towards some other point in the studio. An unexpected event breaks in and cuts through the almost monastic silence.

These are what are known as “therapeutic breaks”, which help us to come back five minutes later with our “batteries charged” and a more objective view of the task that we are doing.

For example, a snake unexpectedly popping up in the hedge of our garden can turn a few minutes’ rest into a danger-fraught safari in search of the lost reptile, or someone’s recent trip to Asturias can result in a ciderpouring competition.

507

These “therapeutic breaks also come about when a birthday or some achievement at work is being celebrated.

508

For instance, Suso might take advantage of Bap’s birthday to create the “Esmorzaret Time Planning”, a standard for arranging the table of the elevenses celebration with precise indications as to where the bread, wine and different dishes forming the

meal should be set, also determining the exact Pantone shade that the ham or the cheese should be to attain the required level of excellence.

Otro tipo de celebración es la que Another type of celebration is the one we call the “big order”, which Suso, as alma mater of the “therapeutic breaks” celebrates with great gusto, with his recently cut out cardboard guitar, then offering us a performance in the purest Rhythm & Blues style.

509

These “breaks can also move into more creative areas closer to R+D+i.

510

One day Lorena had the idea that we could take part in the Homage to Adrian Frutiger by setting up an installation in the garden. A few minutes later the letters gradually emerged like wild flowers on the lawn.

A great curiosity for understanding, trying out and experimenting, which brings creativity so very close to the realm of play, led the group to take our photograph and then process the picture until this could be viewed in 3-D on the computer screen, to everyone’s ensuing “wows!.

Whether we like it or not indeed, creativity goes along with play, which is why it is so important, apart from many other things, for us to enjoy our work.
