STITCHING UP SOME FUN

EVER WANTED TO TAKE UP A HEM ON YOUR FAVOURITE DRESS, OR PAIR OF PANTS, BUT NOT QUITE KNOWN HOW TO GO ABOUT IT?

The Coolum heArts community arts centre is about to come to your rescue with the addition of a community sewing skills class on the first Saturday of every month starting on February 4 with local tailor Pete Trimble of Pete Sews.

Pete has over 10 years’ experience in the trade, is a successful business owner and a qualified trainer.

The classes are aimed at helping attendees to learn how to repair their own clothing, complete simple alterations, build confidence using a sewing machine, under the careful

tutelage of Pete. The cost of the classes will be $20 and sewing machines will be supplied.

Coolum Hearts activities coordinator Sheryl Williams said people could bring their own projects to do, like mending, alterations, or perhaps something they would like to create – or they could choose from a number of simple projects that Pete will have on display, like aprons, bags, wine glass coaster sets etc.

The classes will be held from 10am to 3pm at the Coolum Hearts Shed.

FOOD WARRIOR TAKES TOP TITLE

A DESIRE TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE, TO HELP OTHERS AND TO ADVOCATE FOR A LESS WASTEFUL FUTURE HAS SEEN LOCAL RESIDENT MICHELE LIPNER NAMED AS THE SUNSHINE COAST CITIZEN OF THE YEAR.

Michele is the founder and coordinator of the local chapter of OzHarvest.

Each month she is joined by a team of volunteers who collect more than 15,000 kilos of quality surplus food from 40 food donors from north of Noosa to Coolum, Caloundra and beyond, and re-distribute it to 45 agencies to feed people in need.

Outside of food recovery, OzHarvest also delivers a range of education programs locally including Cooking for a Cause and Food Education and Sustainability.

Sunshine Coast Council Acting Mayor Rick Baberowski said people like Michele formed the

backbone of our Sunshine Coast community.

“This year, we received 63 Sunshine Coast Australia Day nominations across seven categories with a common thread weaving through each one — every nominee was praised for their selflessness and their dedication to helping others,” Cr Baberowksi said.

“Together the nominations form a glorious account of the actions of everyday people who make a difference.

“It’s a humbling account and every nominee should feel very proud.

The 2023 Senior Citizen of the Year title went to Nambour’s Gary Langford, who is the president of the Nambour Local Ambulance Committee.

The 2023 Young Citizen of the Year went to mental health advocate and regular volunteer at 4 Paws Animal rescue - Mason HopeKassulke.

Mason is also an award-winning artist and songwriter and uses this as a platform to raise awareness and generate funds and support for mental health.

Emerging from a strong line up of contenders for the Community Group of the Year Awards for 2023 were The Board Meeting Surf Charity and Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled who were judged to be equally worthy of the category win, producing a tied result.

WELCOME TO 2023

A belated happy new year! I hope you had a wonderful break. I managed to take time to get out and catch quite a few summer sunrises.

I recently had the pleasure of showing Meaghan Scanlon MP, Minister for the Environment and Great Barrier Reef, Science and Youth Affairs, through Our Blue Heart Sunshine Coast project.

Together with Unitywater and the Department of Environment and Science, we spoke about the importance and benefits of the project’s joint partnership.

And I was able to express the sentiments of individual landowners and support from local community groups.

LOCAL PROJECT UPDATES

A stormwater pit on Grandview Drive, Coolum Beach is at the end of its useful life and will be replaced in February.

There may be a small disruption to traffic with traffic control in place for community and worker safety.

Stormwater infrastructure is one of council’s largest and most vital assets.

PET ROADSHOW

Council’s Response Service Officers will be at Stumers Beach, Wednesday 22 February 2023, from 7–9am to provide information about responsible dog ownership.

Come and say hello and get information on where you can exercise your dog, cat management, keeping your pets and

wildlife safe, sharing and respecting the space with other users, registration and microchipping, dog waste #bagitandbinit, barking dog concerns and our education programs.

Plus, you can pick up some freebies for your dog, or activities for the kids.

In recent news about our Biosphere, I’d like to congratulate Ella Woodborne, our region’s passionate 19-year-old environmental advocate, on her selection for the UNESCO Our Humanature Pathways panel.

The panel will discuss humanity’s role in establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with nature, and will help shape the decisions of international bodies, governments and the business world.

ARTISTS ON TRACK FOR EASTER

RIGHT ACROSS OUR REGION THIS MONTH THERE ARE ARTISTS HARD AT WORK IN THEIR HOMES AND STUDIOS CREATING PIECES IN PREPARATION FOR COOLUM ART COLLECTIVE'S

2023 EASTER ART EXHIBITION

The annual event will be held at the Coolum Civic Centre from April 7 to 10, stretching from three days to four this year off the back of its increasing popularity with local art lovers.

More than 200 original artworks will be offered for sale over the four days, comprising both traditional and current styles including oils and watercolours to acrylic, mixed media and pastel works.

Award winning Australian artist Garry Dolan has been named as the VIP guest

speaker and judge for this year’s event and will share his story and demonstrate his technique as part of the proceedings.

Dolan is well known for his art and has a passion for capturing the grace and movement of ballet dancers.

It’s a passion that has earned him the title of Artist in Residence at a number of ballet companies.

He is also a founding member of Sunshine Coast Plein Air Painters.

Entry to the exhibition is

free and visitors have the opportunity to vote for their favourite artist in the “People’s Choice award”.

All are welcome to attend the official opening and presentation of prizes by Garry Dolan on Saturday, April 8 at 3pm, as well as the opportunity to enjoy the music provided by local group “The Shoplifters”.

NEW JOBS HUB FOR SUNSHINE COAST

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL HAS CREATED AN ONLINE PORTAL FOR JOB SEEKERS IN THE REGION.

The Sunshine Coast Jobs Hub is a free service created via a partnership with Council and Study Sunshine Coast and already has more than 700 opportunities listed.

It’s free for businesses to advertise their job opportunities, and it also aggregates employment opportunities from other job

sites to showcase roles specifically located on the Sunshine Coast.

Jobs up for grabs right now include a chef’s position at Maleny for $80,000, a payroll manager at Maroochydore for $116,000, a watersports instructor at Caloundra for between $55,000-$66,000 and a landscape labourer at Buderim for $29 per hour.

It might be time to think about downsizing your home

Rachel Lane co-author of Aged Care, Who Cares? reported in the Age Newspaper on two separate pieces of legislation which were passed by the federal government, the combination of which is set to supersize the incentive for retirees to downsize their homes in 2023.

Of particular interest is Legislation which has been introduced with significant changes to the way the proceeds of your home are treated for calculating your pension while you are waiting to buy or build your new home. The changes affect both the assets and income test assessments and apply to people who sell their homes after January 1.

Under the assets test, the exemption period on the proceeds of the sale of your home – money that you intend to buy or build a new home with – will be extended from 12 months to two years. The exemption can be extended to three years in extenuating circumstances.

Downsizing decisions are complex, so it is best to seek advice from a specialist.

BRING ON BIG PROJECTS IN 2023

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND 2023 PRIORITIES

There are good reasons why people flocked to the Sunshine Coast over this Christmas period – we are a lifestyle capital and we locals enjoy the world’s most enviable way of life.

As we enter 2023, I reaffirm a pledge I made in my maiden speech in 2016: “to be Sunshine Coast’s man in Canberra and not Canberra’s man on the Sunshine Coast” - my loyalty lies at home and I’ll continue fighting for our region.

This year, I want to see tangible outcomes where I have secured funding, including: completion of the Maroochydore Rd / Mons Rd interchanges of the Bruce Highway (over $300M); ramping up of Phase One of the North Coast Rail Line (over $500M), and; starting work on the Mooloolah River Interchange on the Sunshine Motorway (over $300M).

I’ll also be continuing my campaign for better rail services to the Coast, including full duplication of the North Coast Rail Line to Nambour (the $5 million I secured for design work is yet to be matched by the Qld Labor Government); and a new line along the CAMCOS corridor to Maroochydore (the $1.6 billion we secured is yet to be matched by the Qld Labor Government and funding has been postponed by the Federal Labor Government).

These aren’t my only priorities of course, but they’re the big ticket ones.

SPORTING AND PARA-SPORTING CHAMPIONS

It was great to recently meet another group of local sporting and para-sporting champions. Thirty four (34) young sports stars were recognised in the latest round of Local Sporting Champions and Local Para Champions grants for 12-18 year olds.

I would particularly like to give a shoutout to:

• Belle Jackson from Coolum BeachHockey Australia U13 Carnival

The year is off to a flying start for our local community, which kicked off with our annual Coolum Beach Australia Day Awards held recently.

Congratulations to the Citizen of the Year, Brennan Carolan (right, top), and to our Community Group of the Year, Coolum Hearts (middle). The Volunteer of the Year was awarded to both Dave Cush of the Coolum Beach Surf Lifesaving Club (pictured right, bottom) and Coolum and Northshore Coastcare’s Leigh Warneminde.

Great to see such deserving recipients being recognized for their many years of service to our local community. A big thank you also to the Lions Club of Coolum Beach for once again hosting these important awards.

Speaking of local heroes, time is running out to nominate individuals for the 2023 Queensland Greats Awards. These awards are an opportunity to honour the State’s home grown heroes across three categories – individual, institution, and posthumous, and close on 17 February, 2023.

TREVOR RYAN HAS BEEN NAMED AS A FINALIST IN THE 2023 BETTER BUSINESS AWARDS IN THE BEST REGIONAL BROKER CATEGORY FOR QUEENSLAND.

The awards, now in their 10th year, were launched by The Adviser in 2014 as a way of recognising “the remarkable achievements of top professionals within Australia’s broking industry, enabling them to simultaneously strengthen their roles in the sector and gain recognition”.

The State winners for Queensland will be announced at an event on March 2 in Brisbane.

The Adviser editor Annie Kane said 2022 had been a particularly challenging time for the broking industry.

“With interest rates having started to rise for the first time in nearly a decade and continuing to rise, brokers have been exceptionally busy this year helping a growing number of borrowers understand their financial position and refinance their loans,” Ms Kane said.

“The finalists this year should be commended for their dedication, hard work and care when it comes to supporting borrowers and ensuring they are able to understand their changing repayments.

“Congratulations to all the finalists who are helping drive the broking industry forward.”

He has also been recognised in the Mortgage Professional Association’s Top 100 Brokers on several occasions as well as being recognised as Regional Broker of the Year.

Trevor opened the Aussie Coolum franchise in Birtwill St several years ago and now works with his team to service the loan needs of customers in the greater Coolum area.
