BARNS LANE KICKS OFF IT'S FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR THE UNIQUE AGRITOURISM PROJECT PLANNED FOR BARNS LANE AT COOLUM WITH COUNCIL APPROVAL NOW GRANTED.

Sharing the good news on site at 39 Barns Lane on May 11 the developers, Helen and Jason Grant and Jonathan Leishman, were enthusiastic about bringing their proposal to life by the end of 2023 and becoming a big part of the local community. Already the team have been working with the teachers and students of Coolum Beach State School, just next door to the site, about the orchard that will be planted on site, the gardens, and Coolum News - June 2022

the local produce that will be showcased in a 2000sqm produce hall that is at the heart of the project’s offer. Jason said the way the project would be developed would add more than 360 car parks to the area which would be available for parents of the state school to use at drop off and pick up, hopefully helping to ease some of the congestion at the Sunshine Coast Motorway and Yandina-Coolum Rd roundabout at the same time. The 6.8 hectare site will eventually have more than three hectares of productive garden beds. Continued page 2

AGRI-TOURISM ON THE DOORSTEP From page 1 The Barns Lane Farm will also include an Agri-tech incubator - `Dirt Lab' where scientists and tech developers will join forces to create new products to enhance productivity for growers. In Stage 3 there will be an Events Centre and boutique hotel with a view to hosting rural style weddings and events. There will also be music and art space and a craft distillery and brewery, along with restaurants and cafes taking advantage of the fresh produce offered by 50 short and long terms stallholders in the grand, undercover, produce hall. The developers expect the project will create about 170 full time equivalent jobs across a range of industries once complete. For the development team the next steps will

including preparing the site, which Jason said would be slightly raised in places to ensure it stayed well above any potential worst case flood scenarios. They are also seeking interest from businesses and partners to be part of the commercial elements of the project, with agreements in place already with Compass Farms to have their students and volunteers be part of the maintenance and development of the gardens when the time came. "The Produce Hall will provide a neverbefore-seen opportunity for local producers, without being subjected to trading restrictions and weather conditions," Jason said. "It will offer multiple connections to the market including selling direct to the public and supplying on-site restaurants and vendors." Helen said the project would have something

BIOSPHERE BID RESULTS NEAR WHETHER OR NOT THE SUNSHINE COAST’S BID TO BECOME RECOGNISED AS A UNESCO BIOSPHERE IS ACCEPTED SHOULD BE KNOWN BY THE MIDDLE OF THIS MONTH.

If granted, it means UNESCO will officially recognise the Sunshine Coast as an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty. Just four other sites in Australia are UNESCO designated biosphere reserves including the Great Sandy and Noosa Biosphere Reserves. In 2019, on behalf of the community, Sunshine Coast Council developed the UNESCO Biosphere nomination and starting the process of applying for the prestigious status. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was thrilled the nomination had made it to the final leg of the process. “A biosphere is a special place where responsible development and people working, living and playing sustainably sit alongside active conservation,” Mayor Jamieson said. “This is about celebrating people and nature. “Having this credential will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, economy and natural assets. “Becoming a biosphere will help us create a legacy for our children’s future; care for our beautiful landscapes and stunning beaches; protect, share and celebrate the cultural 4

heritage of our communities and leverage international recognition and economic opportunities to grow local businesses.” Biosphere Community Reference Group Chair Will Shrapnel said if the region was recognised as a biosphere reserve then people could operate their business or enjoy the outdoors as they had always done, but with a confidence of a better future through a shared goal of sustainability. “It’s important for our community to understand the fundamental value of sustainability within our region and recognise that we can all play a role in protecting and celebrating this special region where we live, learn, work and play,” Mr Shrapnel said. “Currently, Australia has four UNESCO designated biosphere reserves, and across the world there are more than 700 in over 130 countries. Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said it was an exciting time for the Sunshine Coast and particularly all those directly involved in the journey to date. “With more than 3000 community members engaged and 609 surveys completed in the preparation of our nomination, it has truly been a team effort,” Cr Suarez said. To learn more, please visit Council’s website: sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search “biosphere”. coolumnews.com.au

Coolum Theatre Players actors getting to know their puppet friends for Avenue Q.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS PRESENTS AVENUE Q, A MUSICAL COMEDY FEATURING PUPPETS AND HUMAN ACTORS WITH MUSIC AND LYRICS BY ROBERT LOPEZ AND JEFF MARX AND BOOK BY JEFF WHITTY.

Described as a “delightfully offensive show” Avenue Q has been praised for its approach in tackling significant issues in today’s society – including racism, homophobia and internet porn, with some too-close-to-home biting satire. Coolum’s director Jesse Hana Ellison refers to this show as the Sesame Street for Adults. It pokes fun at everything from the television show’s foundational belief in the value of education to the pro-social messages it communicates, by adopting its familiar characters and style and twisting them into a vehicle for commentary on life’s real lessons. Jesse spent several years performing professionally in Brisbane, having studied musical theatre, acting and stand up comedy, before joining the Coolum Theatre Players family in 2010. Her favourite shows include: Urinetown, Sweet Charity, Sylvia, Rocky 10

Horror, Spamalot and We Will Rock You. She was the entertainment coordinator for CTP’s 30th birthday celebrations in 2018 and last year directed the hugely successful season of Xanadu the musical at Coolum. Jesse said she is very much looking forward to directing this puppet-filled comedy which follows a group of twenty-somethings seeking their purpose in a big-city life. This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. When: July 22, 23, 29, 30 at 7.30pm and Sunday 24th and 31st at 2pm. Sell NOW — Move LATER 5 STAR

Review

Thanks Wayne! In early February 2022 I was approached by Wayne Hay who told me he had a number of potential purchasers who were very interested in buying my home. I signed up with him in the 7th February and four days later a contract of sale of my house was signed by all parties. This was no mean feat since I had insisted that a six month leaseback deal be a special condition of the contract. This was to allow me enough time to purchase another home in the same area. I had met Wayne earlier on a number of occasions and I had been impressed with his intimate knowledge of the Peregian Springs area and his marketing professionalism. He did not disappoint me. In summary he is a good listener and communicator, is a very personable agent and he has proven himself to be an excellent negotiator. Now he has to find me another house to live in!

Hardworking agent who thinks outside the box Wayne will constantly work hard to achieve results for his clients. The bonus for us was Wayne negotiating a flexible leaseback of our home for a few months until we were ready to depart on our trip around Australia. Wayne is always out and about in the community engaging with all. He is not the type of agent that over promises and under delivers. If you are after an agent who always keeps you informed through effective communication and is committed to getting a result and willing to think outside the norm Wayne is the agent for you.

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

PUSHING FOR ROADWORKS CASH BUDGET FUNDING PUSH

With the State Government set to hand down the Budget at the end of the month, I am looking forward to additional funding being allocated to long overdue roadworks across the region. Every week I am contacted by locals concerned about the poor standard of our road network, and despite my ongoing advocacy that has seen funds finally invested in the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway and Yandina Coolum Roundabout, much more needs to be done. As we embark on a decade of significant investment in infrastructure in preparation for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics, it is imperative that funds are fast tracked to upgrade our major transit routes to meet the demands of our growing population. I look forward to the new incoming Federal Government committing funds to the heavy rail extension from Beerwah to Maroochydore, and hope the upcoming Budget not only locks in the State’s share of funding, but also funds to bring forward other critical road infrastructure upgrades like the duplication of the Motorway. Our local schools have fared well in previous years’ Budgets, and I hope this year is no different. I’ve been working closely with Coolum State High to secure funding for a new performance hall for some time now, so let’s hope all our efforts pay off, with a big announcement later this month. COOLUM TOUCH FOOTBALL SECURES CASH FOR LIGHTING UPGRADE

During the last sitting week, I was delighted to host student leaders from Coolum Beach Christian College for a tour and lunch at the exclusive Strangers Dining Room at Parliament House. Thank you to Daniel, Taylah, Sam and Scarlett, and Ms Corry for visiting, and taking an active interest in how our State Parliament operates. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEALS ON WHEELS
