Days of rain turned Coolum State School into a lake last week.

FLOOD CLEAN UP BEGINS NEARLY 300ML OF RAIN FELL IN JUST ONE DAY AT SUNSHINE COAST AIRPORT LAST WEEK PROMPTING THE CLOSURE OF THE SUNSHINE COAST MOTORWAY FOR SEVERAL HOURS BETWEEN MUDJIMBA AND COOLUM AND CREATING AN INLAND SEA AT COOLUM WEST.

Relentless rain from February 23 to February 27 saw the State Government close schools across the south east, including the Sunshine Coast region on February 28 - with Coolum State School suffering inundation to at least half of its classrooms, with the sports sheds the hardest hit. Beaches were closed for most of the week as dirty water Coolum News - March 2022

and floating debris made them unsafe, and there were numerous reports of localised flash flooding, and minor landslides making travel by road particularly challenging. State Emergency Service and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service staff attended more than 200 calls across the Sunshine Coast region in just 24 hours, 85 per cent of those for flooding. The Council also announced that the rates payment date would be extended to Friday, March 4 to give those who were unable to pay online a chance to get to a Council office once the rain finally stopped falling. FROM THE ED’S DESK What a hectic start to a new year! A COVID-19 surge, followed by flooding. You’d have to wonder what’s next. Yet, in among the days of isolation, coughing and spluttering, there has been plenty going on for our community, including the Supreme Court’s decision to quash the approval of the Sekisui development at Yaroomba and ask the Planning and Environment Court to have another look at it taking into account the planning scheme and the staunch opposition of thousands of locals. It will be interesting to see which way the project goes now with the option to update submissions to the Planning and Environment Court, or for Sekisui to revert to an approved plan from 2009 lodged by the then Hyatt for a

gated residential community on the land. As we look to March, Clean Up Australia Day is on the horizon, with the chance for Sunshine Coast residents to top last year’s effort of collecting nearly 210 wheelie bins worth of rubbish in day. See briefs on page 4 for registration details. Residents also have until March 31 to have their say on the Council planning scheme for the future of our local area. Councillor Maria Suarez has information on how to get involved in her column on page 6 of this month’s magazine. And lastly, given all that’s going on in the world right now, it’s timely to have our regular columnist Mark Horsfall back from a Christmas break with a great column talking about “fear” and offering a few good tips on how to keep it from ruling your life (page 14). I hope you enjoy the read, Geoff

The decision follows an appeal by Development Watch and its supporters (pictured right), who raised nearly half a million dollars to take the matter to court, arguing that the original approval had failed to meet community expectations around the height of the buildings and the needs of the community as outlined in more than 9000 objections. CARE OUTREACH GRANT WIN

Coolum-based organisation Care Outreach received $5000 in Federal funding for volunteers last month to support the work they do with those in need. Care Outreach co-founder Melissa Close said the group provides physical, emotional and pastoral care to those living in regions that have been severely affected by either drought, floods or bushfires, property fires or storm damage. The money will be used to offset the fuel costs of volunteers travelling to help out. KIDS IN ACTION BACK FOR 2022

Sunshine Coast schools and students keen to make a difference to the environment are being urged to get involved in Sunshine Coast Council’s Kids in Action program. This year’s program, suitable for children in Years 5-8, is themed Catchment Connections: Mountains to the Sea, and will explore the movements and relationships of the Coast’s waterways, plants and animals. Email kidsinaction@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to find out more. EASTER ART EXHIBITION PLANNING

Coolum Art Collective will present its annual Easter Art Exhibition at the Coolum Civic Centre from April 15 to 17. The event will feature more than 200 original artworks from the Sunshine Coast’s leading artists and artisans working across a wide range of mediums including oils, watercolours, acrylic, mixed media and pastels. Entry is free and visitors are able to vote on a People’s Choice Award winner too. CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY MARCH 6

The 32nd annual Clean Up Australia Day will be held on March 6. To find an event near you, and register your participation, go to www. cleanup.org.au/cleanupaustraliaday and selection “join a clean up”. Last year 1630 people on the Sunshine Coast registered to be 4

part of the event and they removed a total of 207 wheelie bins full of rubbish. ON THE LOOK OUT FOR ARTEFACTS

Staff at Unitywater have been undertaking cultural heritage inductions to learn how to identify Aboriginal artefacts as they go about their business of providing water infrastructure to the region. Kabi Kabi Native Title Applicant Kerry Jones has been leading the inductions for the team, showing them how different artefacts, such as grinding stones, were used. Unitywater Environmental and Cultural Heritage Specialist Emma Newton said if staff found an artefact, they stopped work, cordoned off the area, and reported it so that it could be assessed and handled appropriately. IT’S SO COOL TO BE KIND

Local businesses, Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service have joined forces to launch a new campaign promoting kindness in our region. The It’s Cool to be Kind campaign features unbranded videos, posters and marketing content for all businesses to use in a bid to remind us all that it costs nothing to be kind, while being cruel is not cool. It comes in the wake of reports that in many sectors, including hospitality, retail, transport, medical and administration, staff are experiencing an increase in customer anger and abuse. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said staff don’t deserve to be treated poorly. “Everyone is doing their best, so please remember to keep kindness front of mind in all your interactions. If you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s best not to say anything at all,” Mayor Jamieson said. See www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Business/COVID-19-Support-for-Business/ Kind-is-Cool-campaign-toolkit to download posters. coolumnews.com.au

GARDEN ORGANICS BIN

The garden organics bin collection service is expanding to households across the Sunshine Coast which don’t currently have one from July 2022. Each fortnight, the bin will be emptied by council, and diverted away from landfill and mulched ready to be reused to extend our landfill life and reduce greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. It’ll cost around $35 per year for a 240L bin. If you already have a garden organics bin your annual fees will reduce to the new rate. You can find more information at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/gardenbin. BE KIND WHENEVER POSSIBLE

The upheaval of the last few years has tested everyone patience at times, and a kind word or action can change everyone’s day for the better. That’s why local businesses, Council and Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service have joined forces, launching a new campaign promoting kindness. It was no doubt a welcome relief for parents and carers when students finally returned to school last month. It’s also been a challenging time for our principals, teachers, support and admin staff, who’ve been forced to go above and beyond to reimagine education and learning over the past two years. To help ease them back into school life, and to say thanks for all their hard work, I took the opportunity to drop by our local schools to deliver some ‘Appreciation Buckets’ during

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

EXTRA MONEY FOR BUSHFIRES MORE BUSHFIRE FUNDING

As you would remember, Peregian Springs was devastated by the Black Summer Bushfires just over two years ago. At that time, I met with the local community, emergency service workers and indigenous leaders and received one piece of reoccurring feedback. The importance of communication during a crisis. That’s why I was so please to announce $561,000 for an emergency management and evacuation call system at the Nambour Showgrounds recently, a site which doubles as a major evacuation centre. Over the past two years I have helped deliver over $3.3 million in Federal Government for bushfire recovery projects here on the Sunshine Coast.

problem on the Sunshine Coast. There is still work to do, but this is an excellent outcome. BOOSTING AUSSIE SUPER

From July, more than 300,000 Australian workers will begin to earn super on their salaries; an effective pay rise of 10% for some of our lowest paid workers. The Morrison Government, as part of the Women’s Budget Statement, promised to abolish the $450 threshold - and we have delivered. PLANNING THE FUTURE

GOOD FEMALE & YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT NEWS

While there is still much work to do, the latest economic figures demonstrate Australia’s strong economic recovery from COVID-19. It’s also good news for youth unemployment – now at 9% - which has been a perennial

I sat down with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher recently to discuss future plans for South-East Queensland, including a Zoom meeting with the SEQ Council of Mayors to discuss the SEQ City Deal and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Even though the Federal Government is delivering record amounts of infrastructure here on the Sunshine Coast, there’s no room for complacency. I’m going after more.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

TIPS FOR TACKLING THOSE FEARS THERE IS A LOT GOING ON IN THE WORLD THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE YOU AND I TO BE FEARFUL.

Russia declared war, Covid is running rampant through our community, our economy is moving around like the waves in the ocean … How do we keep ourselves on a even keel and manage our fear? Understand your fear. Fear is designed to keep you safe, helping you recognise danger and act accordingly. Embrace the fear as instruction and let it inform your actions and decisions, but not control your life. Acknowledge what you are fearing as it can help give you strength and focus to overcome it. Think long term. If I look at my shares with a short term mindset I would become quiet depressed. However keeping a long term mindset reminds me that the share market is an investment over many years. We can easily get caught up in short term fears however if we can face our fears with resilience and strength and eyes looking to the future we can overcome them. Thinking about the long term won’t fix the short term problem but will help you keep it in perspective and think about it objectively. Support each other. Sharing our fears with others, encouraging each other, picking each other up when down

are some great benefits of having supportive relationships in your life. Last weekend, a friend and I held a snake (we’re both petrified of snakes) for the first time. If we become insular and withdraw, our fears can weigh us down. We are in it together, so draw on the community that is around you. Ensure you maintain your social connections during challenge and fearful times. Our greatest inspiration can come by watching others overcome their fears and learning from them. Keep your social media balanced. It is important to stay informed and updated but too much time on social media can create fear, panic and hysteria. Should you feel your fear rising, turn social media off for a couple of hours or a day. There is a lot of misinformation so make sure you are acquiring information from reliable sources. Focus on what you can control. There are so many things outside our control and worrying about them won’t change anything. Focus on what is around as this will help prevent you from fearing what you cannot control. Fear does not have to control your life so chose today to rise above it! * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School
