TREES CULLED AT SUNRISE COMMUNITY GROUPS ARE SEEKING A LAST MINUTE INTERVENTION BY THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO PUT A STOP TO CLEARING OF LAND FOR A RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE FACILITY AT SUNRISE BEACH.

In a blog on Noosa Matters on January 31, former Peregian Beach Community Association president and long time Peregian Beach resident Barry Cotterell said they were seeking to have the Minister for Resources, responsible for the Vegetation Management Act, issue an interim declaration over the development because of the “imminent threat Eastern Beaches News - February 2022

to the area which is of high nature conservation value”. The latest move follows the decision by Blue Care to proceed with clearing on the site in the last week of January, prompting local protests as bulldozers moved in. Many locals to the Grasstree Court site have lobbied against the development for years, with a petition by 11-year-old Spencer Hitchen having collected more than 59,000 signatures so far. He has followed the plight of the birds since he was 8 (see change. org/saveourglossies for petition). The development was approved nearly 10 years ago. The recent works are for intersection upgrades prior building Stage 1.

FROM THE ED’S DESK NOT SURE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT I WAS KIND OF HOPING 2022 MIGHT KICK OFF A LITTLE SMOOTHER THAN THE REALITY WE’VE SEEN.

For all of my friends in retail and hospitality in particular my heart goes out to you and your teams as you’ve battled through the non-official shutdowns created by simply not having enough people left to work thanks to the dreaded COVID and the quarantining requirements that go with it. To the parents who have had to scramble at the last minute to find another two weeks of care or activities for their school aged children at the end of a very long break - you’re nearly there. Let’s be extra kind to our teachers and schools as they juggle the challenges of masks

and social distancing when to doors finally do re-open in this ever-changing environment. All of a sudden the 10-week class plans they have laboured over for half of the Christmas break need to be re-done and compressed into eight. On the good news side of things, congratulations to everyone honoured in this year’s Australia Day list, including the nine stars of the Sunshine Coast who have worked tirelessly in their fields of endeavour for many years and received worthy recognition for their efforts (see story page 3). Finally, for those following the plight of the black glossy cockatoos. We’ve included an update on the front page as at February 1. Being monthly, following the daily updates for us is impossible. It may be worth looking at Save Sunrise Glossies on Facebook for campaign news. Until next month, Geoff

NEW FLIGHT PATHS SUGGESTED

Community members debate alternate flight paths at a Flight Path Forum meeting.

DEBATE CONTINUES OVER THE BEST PATHS FOR PLANES TO TAKE WHEN ACCESSING SUNSHINE COAST AIRPORT’S NEW RUNWAY.

Flight Path Forum, a group convened in support of community groups representing residents caught under the new flight paths, has been working on tweaks to flight paths that they say will lessen the volume of planes over heavily populated areas and provide further safety and flying mile benefits. Flight Path Forum president Marian Kroon said FPF was responding to Air Services Australia’s call for community suggested alternative flight paths. FPF hired Global Airspace Solutions to advise on possible alternatives. “The consultant proposed a new western route to the north and east and new western route to and from the south and west,” Ms Kroon said. “These will significantly reduce the 4

impacts of aircraft noise across the community. Firstly, because far fewer residents are affected by the new routes, and secondly, it allows the noise burden to be shared, with some aircraft taking these additional arrival and departure routes, while some remain on the current routes.” FPF also thanked Noosa Council, community groups and all the members of the community who made donations or participated in fundraising activities to make it possible to engage professional flight path design expertise. The FPF submission has been lodged with ASA which will provide a summary of all the community suggested alternatives on their website and take some time to consider the suggested alternatives. An ASA assessment is not expected until March 2022. The Flight Path Forum submission can be found at https://flightpathforum.org.au

OWNERS FIGHT BACK AFTER FIRE BY FIONA EWINGTON WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR DREAMS GO UP IN SMOKE?

You dust yourself off, stay strong and keep on going. This was what the owners of Padre Coffee and Humdrum Espresso have shown after their new Eumundi café was taken by fire in the early hours of January 12 this year. Marcus Beach residents and Humdrum Espresso co-owners Marinus and Julie Jansen, pictured right, whose business interests also include Padre Coffee in Noosaville, received news their newly-renovated café restaurant was on fire by social media. They were not quite believing the news was real until they later visited the site reduced and found the cafe reduced to just rubble. Keen to move forward Marinus and Julie have started planning to install a pop-up coffee caravan at the cafe site in a suitable spot for their loyal customers to receive their morning coffees - ensuring the ambiance and vibe of Humdrum Espresso continues and staff are not left without jobs. Padre Coffee was established in Melbourne in 2008 brought its coffee roasting experience to Noosa in 2015. The Jansen’s popular Noosaville café encourages coffee connoisseurs to try new and interesting roasting blends, flavours and tastes. The business is focused on ethical, sustainable growth and aims to bring exciting opportunities for both their staff members and customers. Enjoying the village culture of Eumundi they took on Humdrum in March 2021 and spent the year bringing their unique vision and passion to the place. Humdrum has had to endure multiple closures during the pandemic, but customers have remained loyal. 8

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but it was due to quick thinking locals, the fire services were called, and the fire was extinguished before dawn, preventing it from spreading. There were no casualties, however there were plenty of reports of an extremely loud bang when the intense heat blew the fridge door off. No strangers to the dangers of fire the Jansens were evacuated from their Marcus Beach home during the 2019 bushfires. Humdrum will be serving coffees and light snacks from their coffee cart in Eumundi while they rebuild their dreams and watch them flourish once again. Not just for Julie and Marinus, but for the beautiful people of Eumundi and our illustrious region. easternbeachesnews.com.au

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH NOOSA MP SANDY BOLTON

TESTING TIMES FOR NEW YEAR WELCOME TO 2022!

Over the Christmas period, government decisions and preparations for the arrival of COVID-19 created untenable situations that I had raised last year in Parliament, even with questions to the Premier regarding stocks of Rapid Antigen Tests in September, as well personally contacting our testing sites to ensure coverage for incoming visitors. However, no one predicted the speed at which Omicron spread, and that testers with heat stroke would lead to site closures. We were left to resolve each new issue on an hourly basis, and I thank all who took my calls, even on Christmas Day, to clarify confusing announcements or to access extra resources. Much can be learnt from this, and we ask all levels of government and commentators to move beyond the ‘blame game’ into the solid logistics needed in managing this virus into the future. In amongst the many advocacies submitted over this period has been with the Premier and our Small Business Ombudsman to seek long term relief including via payroll tax, fees and licenses for our businesses who have suffered incredibly through staff losses leading to closures after becoming ineligible for federal support once we hit 80% double vaccination status. With COVID-19 now firmly amongst our communities, another reminder to increase personal efforts in avoiding and sharing. As

advised many times, hand washing, sanitising, masks, distancing, boosters, fitness, and testing will assist us through this ‘wave’ and those to follow. With border closures serving their purpose to delay the arrival of this ‘bug’ until Queenslanders had opportunity to access vaccinations and state and federal target percentages reached, it is now up to all of us. Given that recent advice includes that ‘herd immunity’ may not be possible, we now need to focus on managing this unwanted ‘visitor’ possibly for the next couple of years, and move beyond current commentaries on what should have been done, into what must be done! All COVID-19 information, including links to testing and vaccination clinics, can be found at www.covid19.qld.gov.au with regular updates to Sandy Bolton MP Facebook page, Noosa 360, www.sandybolton.com and via our newsletter. Stay well and don’t forget those New Year’s resolutions! As well, gratitude for where we live and the incredible people within, and stay united as we continue our long journey with Covid which we are more than ever in together! Warmest regards as always, Sandy

WHAT’S ON

STAGE FUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE THERE’S SURE TO BE A FEW LAUGHS AND SOME GREAT FUN HAD AT COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE IN MARCH AND APRIL WHEN COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS TACKLE TIM FIRTH’S CALENDAR GIRLS.

The show is based on the true story of a group of middle-aged Yorkshire women who decided to take off their clothes and pose for a calendar to raise money for cancer research after one of their husband’s died with Leukaemia. In keeping with the spirit of the play, and the movie of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, the Coolum Theatre Players cast will be producing a calendar too, with all money raised from its sale going to the Katie Rose Cottage in Noosa which provides hospice care for those at the end of their lives. Director Barbara Ryan said she was excited

to be bringing the show to the stage. “This play is a particular favourite of mine and is the second time I’ve been given the opportunity to direct it,” Barbara said. “Whilst it may be known for its nude scene, the story is so much more. It’s a beautiful story of a group of women who are there for each other through life’s ups and downs, through the fun times and through the dark days of deep loss.” The cast calendar will be on sale during the run of the show, with money raised to go towards comfy lounge chairs for guests at Katie Rose Cottage. Tickets are available through North Shore Realty in Coolum or online at www. coolumtheatre.com.au. Shows on March 25 and 26 at 7.30pm, March 27 at 2pm, April 1 and 2 at 7.30pm and April 3 at 2pm. ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

NOOSA ARTS THEATRE SHINES BY FIONA EWINGTON “IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON,” AND PLAY ON THEY DID AT THE NOOSA ARTS THEATRE RECENTLY WITH THEIR PANTOMIME PERFORMANCE OF “THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES”.

Noosa in the grips of COVID, meant the cast played to a smaller house, but their enthusiasm, song and dance performance was as strong as ever. With audience participation playing a vital role, crowds shouted and applauded with vigour, providing the much-needed interaction. Directed by Susan Dearnley, an international performing arts professional with extensive experience in pantomime, the pandemic did not deter an exceptional and entertaining production. A meet and greet from the cast in the sunshine after the show, pictured right, brought alive their magic for young theatre goers. Live performance, theatre and arts is one of the hardest hit industries of the last 2 years but Noosa Arts Theatre has survived thanks to its loyal and dedicated directors, office staff, performers and set designers who are all volunteers and who have continued to develop and progress despite the restrictions. Founded in 1970 Noosa Arts Theatre recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, a year later than planned, to thank everyone who has been involved with the theatre from its humble beginnings until now. Starting out as a shed in Peregian and ending up in what was a shed in Webya Road Noosaville, but is now a glittering theatre with all the trimmings, the loyal members have not only provided their time, but bought bricks to assist the growth of the venue, stuck egg boxes to walls, held fundraising events and 16

bartered for the most comfortable old cinema chairs they could find to replace the director chairs that were the original seating. For theatres to compete with the growing digital entertainment market, takes a big effort from a strong team. “The Secret Men’s Business” are made up of a talented troop of artists who create and paint the sets, so called because it is a mystery how they do it. There is a huge wardrobe department with rows of lovingly handmade costumes, colourful hats and dainty shoes. The team running the Noosa Arts Theatre, most of whom are performance professionals, get together to ensure a wide genre of plays, musicals, both classic and contemporary are staged here. With long lists of names of playwrights, directors and performers adorning the walls, this small venue with a huge heart is a centrepiece in Noosa for arts and entertainment. For information on up and this year’s performances, information on private hire, to audition or become a volunteer please visit the Noosa Arts Theatre website at www.noosaartstheatre.com.au or see their Facebook page. easternbeachesnews.com.au

SUNRISE SHOPS IGA ON THE WAY SUNRISE BEACH RESIDENTS WILL SOON HAVE A NEW IGA SHOP AT THE SUNRISE BEACH SHOPPING CENTRE, ALTHOUGH IT WILL NOT BE THE 500SQM SITE ORIGINALLY PLANNED.

Noosa Council announced on January 10 that after consultation with the prospective new tenant at the site, the fit out would be completed on the existing 300sqm building, with the extra space potentially added later. Council property manager Clint Irwin said the revised approach would mean the $700,000 expansion, which had been supported by Councillors in October last year, would be held over to a later date. “In these uncertain times, we agreed that utilising the existing space would be more beneficial for both parties at this moment,” Mr Irwin said. “The IGA tenant is excited about providing a quality, affordable retail offering to local residents and will start work on fitting out the space shortly.” The tenancy is for 10 years with a further five-year option.
