SURF CLUB WIN Peregian Beach Surf Club to stand alone

Sunshine Beach was closed for days as flood waters wreaked havoc.

FLOODING HITS BEACHES BEACHES ALL OVER THE SUNSHINE COAST WERE CLOSED FOR DAYS LAST WEEK IN THE WAKE OF MAJOR FLOODING IN THE REGION.

In the space of five days from February 23 to 27, the Eastern Beaches from Sunshine Beach to Peregian Beach copped nearly 650mm of rain, including a few wild storms that saw branches fall from trees and storm water run off rushing out to sea. The flooded roads in the region forced the cancellation of a number of events including Noosa Council’s Frog Workshop at Peregian Community House (postponed until March 16) and Eastern Beaches News - March 2022

a Zero Emissions Noosa event scheduled for February 25 at Peregian Community House. Difficulties with staff not being able to make it to work, and the need to stay off the roads saw a number of businesses up and down the coastal strip closed for different periods of time. With the Bruce Highway cut to the north at Gympie and south at Caboolture for nearly two days, supplies at local supermarkets were dwindling on Monday night, although they were expected to be replenished on March 1 once the highway re-opened. FROM THE ED’S DESK ARE WE DONE YET?

First it was the COVID omicron wave, and now the floods. Fair to say that February has certainly come and gone with more than its share of challenges for us all. Here’s hoping that a fresh month will bring a few less battles to our doors. One piece of good news to come out this month for all of those involved in the local surf life saving movement at Peregian Beach is that their passion, their support for the sport and the growing number of Nippers and volunteers over the past few years have been rewarded with the opportunity to go it alone and become their own club again next season. A Committee will be formed for the Supporters’ Club too, in order to fundraise for the gear and training the club’s lifesavers will need to stay safe on the beaches. It’s been a

long road, witih some amazing support from the Noosa Surf Club to help keep the dream alive. It’s great to see locals helping locals as they chase their passion, and in this case, it will benefit the broader community with more trained surf life savers to keep our beachgoers safe in the water. Mayor Clare’s column is well worth a read this month too, with a lot of information to share, including details on the new laws on short stays and the hotline number for any issues (see page 6). On the business front, we say thank you to all of those hardworking small business owners who have battled so much in the past two years, let alone the past week, to provide us all with the products and services we enjoy. It’s no easy feat keeping the doors open, so let’s be sure to be kind and let them know they’re appreciated. Enjoy the read. Geoff

NEW ERA FOR OUR SURF CLUB AN INDEPENDENT, COMMUNITYBASED SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB AT PEREGIAN BEACH (PBSLSC) IS ONE STEP CLOSER.

The right mix of enthusiatic volunteers backed by local community organisations and the strong support of Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast Branch and Advisory Board, Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club and state governing body Surf Life Saving Queensland, have created the right environment for Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club to become an independent entity from the 2022/23 season. Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Working Group Chair John Roderick, who has led the final push to the line for a project three years in the making said it was a good result for those keen to have their own club. “There’s been an enormous amount of hard work and collaborative effort to demonstrate that we have the determination, community support and local Peregian surf lifesavers to return the Peregian Club to independence when the time was right,” Mr Roderick said. “The rejuvenated Peregian Nippers program, and recent growth in the number of Nippers parents and local adults undertaking lifesaving training are healthy indicators that we are now ready to drive the

growth of the new Club.” A new Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Supporter’s Club committee has been established and will work to generate a sustainable income stream to support the Lifesaving Club. Equally important will be a focus on social and member events. “We wish to thank and acknowledge Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, President Ross Fisher, his committee, members and staff for their enormous support over the past eight years as well as the many volunteers who have generously committed their time and expertise to ensure that previous years and the 2021-2022 season has been successful on and off the beach,” Mr Roderick said. “We are sure this relationship will strengthen over the years ahead. “It is an exciting time to join the Club and we are looking forward to working with members and the community to create a new path forward that unites us. “We also encourage input and support from members of the Peregian community and we invite you to contact us with any questions you may have.” If you would like to be part of our family friendly club please contact us at hello@ peregiansurfclub.com.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

BIG WELCOME FOR NEW CEO IT IS TERRIFIC TO ANNOUNCE THAT COUNCIL’S NEW CEO SCOTT WATERS HAS STARTED WORK.

Scott brings significant local government and financial experience to the role, coupled with a strong understanding of the private sector. Scott has been Darwin’s chief executive for three years and was previously chief executive at Whitsunday Regional Council. He also guided the Whitsunday Airport for several years and was General Manager Regional Development and Aviation for Rockhampton Regional Council. We are all very excited that Scott has joined us to continue to deliver to and for our community. TOULAMBI STREET SITE SAVED

In a recent Council meeting, Council has taken a Toulambi Street housing lot off the table of potential sites that could be used for affordable housing. It follows an ecological report that the vegetation on the Council-owned site served as a protective buffer for more sensitive habitat in adjoining Pinaroo Park. It is also home to some koala and glossy black-cockatoo food trees. The decision also answers calls from residents for the site to be kept as a greenspace. This decision also delivers on feedback from our recent Liveability Survey, where residents told us how

6

much they valued environmental protection and management of open spaces. Applying an Environmental and Conservation Zone to the land will give the ecological values recognition and safeguard the site. Council will also look to prepare an updated management plan for Pinaroo Park as part of upcoming budget deliberations and we will continue to investigate how other council land parcels might provide affordable housing options for the shire. We are looking forward to working with housing provider Coast2Bay to develop other affordable housing solutions. FREE WEEKEND BUS TRIAL

Council’s 12-month trial of free weekend bus travel is under way. The initiative is an extension of the Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses that operate during the Christmas and Easter holidays. The Free Holiday Bus program increases the use of public transport. It is hoped the weekend trial will encourage more residents and visitors to use public transport. This initiative is helping work toward Council’s sustainable transport goals. The weekend trial helps more people access busy locations like Hastings Street, where

it can be hard to park. With the start of the 12-month weekend trial it’s a significant amount of free travel we are now offering, and we hope to really change the long-term behaviour of travellers. NOOSA PARADE UPGRADE

Work on the $8 million Noosa Parade corridor upgrade is now under way. Contractors will complete the project in three stages. Work is expected take around nine months. SHORT STAY HOTLINE OPEN NOW

Our hotline where residents can now report problems with neighbouring shortstay accommodation properties is up and running. It’s operating 24 hours a day – (07) 5329 6466. It’s among a raft of measures – a response to calls from the community – to make sure short-stay property owners are being good neighbours and dealing with

problem guests. Under our new local law, owners of properties let out to short-stay guests must apply for an approval and nominate a contact person to swiftly deal with problems. The new code of conduct puts in place basic ground rules for guests to help limit the impact of short-stay properties on residential amenity. It’s not about stopping guests from having a good time, but making sure they’re mindful that they’re holidaying on residential streets where people permanently live. Other regions, including Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, have introduced similar provisions to manage the impact of short-stay accommodation on residential areas. Find out more www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ short-stay-letting. Lots going on, and until next month stay safe, Clare.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT IN NOOSA BY FIONA EWINGTON AFTER MONTHS OF COVID RESTRICTIONS AND BORDER CLOSURES NOOSA IS OPENING UP AGAIN WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS COMING TOGETHER, INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS AND EXCITING EVENTS COMING BACK TO OUR REGION.

From 5-13 March, Noosa will be hosting the Noosa Festival of Surfing celebrating 31 years, bringing to Laguna Bay dazzling athleticism from world renowned surfers and an array of enthusiastic observers. But for Amanda Pummer, pictured right, our local Sustainability Consultant, mass gatherings can mean environmental chaos with risk of our waste ending up in the wrong places, including water ways, woods and beaches. Working across all of Noosa’s major sponsored events, Amanda and her team of volunteer waste warriors are working with Plastic Free Noosa, AA Rubbish and Express Recycling placing 6 waste stations of 4 waste streams along the boardwalk, beach and in the woods. Manned by a friendly team member whose role is to encourage public to place their waste into the appropriate bin eg recycling, containers for change, landfill and compostable goods, ensures all waste generated at these events is disposed of efficiently. This straightforward waste management often accounts for more than 50% decrease in contamination rates, increasing the diversion of waste placed from landfill to recycling. Combined waste such as food products and plastic creates methane which is 25 times more potent in its damage to climate change than carbon dioxide. This is one of the reasons councils around 8

Australia are introducing a compostable facility to households making it easier to separate our food waste from our toxic and our ever-growing landfill. A way for residents in our region to assist, is by disposing of our food waste into a compost bin which in time breaks down into healthy nutrients for our gardens. Our disposable lifestyle with increasing single use plastic consumption engulfing our daily lives has grown dramatically in only two generations but, advises Amanda, habits are easy to change. As Noosa gears up to host a calendar of events throughout the year, Amanda and her business, www.sustainablehappiness. com will continue to remind us how important separating our waste is not just to reduce our local landfill station but to encourage everyone to help reach Australia’s zero emissions by 2030 and Noosa’s own community zero net emissions target of 2026! For information on encouraging sustainability into organisations or how to become a volunteer waste warrior whilst saving the planet visit the Noosa Festival Of Surfing website. Waste Not Want Not is a widely used proverb used in 19th Century but has been heard less in our current throwaway society. easternbeachesnews.com.au

HOBBLING WITH HEEL PAIN? Plantar fasciitis: Medial heel pain with prolonged periods of standing, first thing in the morning or walking on a hard surfaces.

Are you waking up first thing in the morning and hobbling with heel pain? Is your walking or running capacity limited by heel pain? Is your heel pain is becoming chronic? There can be many reasons for developing heel pain. Common reasons can include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendon problems or referral of pain from the lower back. It is essential that you have an accurate assessment and diagnosis so a treatment pathway can be formed. Here are some tips from the Synergy Physio team to explain the two most common causes of heel pain.

Eastern Beaches News - March 2022

Causes include tight calf muscles, poor footwear, loss of foot arch strength and weight gain. Try regular calf stretches and more supportive footwear including our archies! However to fully recover a specific strengthening program is often needed. Achilles tendon pain: Felt toward the back of the heel, achilles tendon pain is often caused by tendon weakness. Stretches don’t usually help! Other causes include poor footwear, a sudden increase in walking or running or poor running technique. The key to resolving this is an accurate assessment and a specific tendon strengthening program.

Our team love helping the community with their health! We offer thorough assessment with longer initial consultations so you don’t feel rushed. We offer hands on therapy, exercise rehabilitation classes, massage, after hours appointments and on the spot claims.

LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF

GREAT START TO THE NEW YEAR MEMBERS AND GUESTS AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING OF THE PEREGIAN FAMILY AND FRIENDS GROUP WERE TREATED TO SOME GOOD NEWS ON LOCAL PROJECTS THEY HAVE BEEN BACKING FOR YEARS.

The best news, particularly for members of the original Family and Friends group, founded in 2017, was that the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club had met the milestones required to become independent again from 2022/23 season. Peregian Family & Friends President Leigh McCready, who founded the original Peregian Beach organisation in 2017 prior to the merger with the Peregian Springs Residents Association told the February 13 meeting the good news. “Today we’ve reached several important milestones, with a new Supporter’s Club and committee established, a 10 year lease negotiation with Noosa Council commenced and confirmation that from the 22/23 season, the Peregian Surf Club will be an independent entity once again after eight years.” “Peregian Beach is the closest beach for around 15,000 people across Peregian, with a population big enough to support all the requirements of our local surf club - around 120 lifesaving volunteers, a thriving nipper

program which educates children from across the whole area and a stable income stream. “In 2021, Peregian Family and Friends raised substantial funds for the Peregian Beach Surf Club, both for current operational needs as well as to rebuild the clubhouse in the future, as it is currently not fit for purpose. “Peregian Family & Friends is the Coast’s only resident’s association which spans both shire and electorate boundaries. Our organisation has grown from strength to strength, with our most important achievement so far being leading the community effort to revive the Peregian Surf Club.” Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club Chair John Roderick shared more news on the surf club at the meeting, followed by Councillor Maria Suarez (SCRC Division 9) who provided an update on the process for investigating a community centre in Peregian Springs and confirmed that she had sought advice from TransLink on whether there were plans for further bus services in the Peregian Springs and Peregian Breeze area and the answer was no. For further information about Peregian Family and Friends or to become a member, please visit www.peregianfriends.com or the Peregian Family & Friends Facebook page.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT FEATURE

HEARING LOSS CAN START EARLIER THAN YOU THINK SOME 1.1 BILLION YOUNG PEOPLE (AGED 12-35 YEARS) ARE AT RISK OF PERMANENT HEARING LOSS FROM LISTENING TO MUSIC AT LOUD VOLUMES OVER PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME, ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION.

Hearing loss has potentially devastating consequences for mental health, education and employment. “More and more young people are placing themselves at risk of irreversible damage to their hearing with daily use of personal audio devices”, Noosa Hearing principal audiologist Deidré Breytenbach said. “Young adults should be made aware that once you lose your hearing, it won’t come back,” Deidre said. “Simple preventative actions such as turning the volume down, taking short listening breaks and restricting daily use of personal audio devices to less than one hour may help lessen the risk.” Safe listening depends on the intensity, or loudness of sound, and the duration and frequency of listening. Exposure to loud sounds can result in temporary hearing loss or tinnitus which is a ringing sensation in the ear. When the exposure is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it can lead to permanent damage. The focus this World Hearing Day, March 3, 2022, is on the importance of ‘safe listening’ as a means of maintaining good hearing health across your lifespan. ‘Safe Listening’ is not just for those working in noisy environments. It also applies to the child in your care. Starting early with prevention techniques can only lead to better, overall hearing health leading to the theme of this year’s day as: “To 14

hear for life, listen with care”. This year’s theme will focus on the importance and means of hearing loss prevention through safe listening, with the following key messages from WHO: • It is possible to have good hearing across the course of life through ear and hearing care. • Many common causes of hearing loss can be prevented, including hearing loss caused by exposure to loud sounds. • ‘Safe listening’ can mitigate the risk of hearing loss associated with recreational sound exposure. Deidré, an Audiologist with over 10 years of experience, says everyone, at all ages should regularly have a hearing test. Ongoing monitoring means changes can be responded to quickly. An initial hearing assessment typically takes around an hour and is tailored to be enjoyable and engaging for young children, teens and adults alike. A comprehensive hearing assessment may be fully subsidised if you are a DVA or pension card holder (conditions apply under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program). Noosa Hearing also offers over the counter or custom-made hearing protection such as musician earplugs. Noosa Hearing operates within the longestablished Noosa Optical. DEATH DEFYING ACTS ON STAGE BY FIONA EWINGTON NOOSA WELCOMED THE GREAT MOSCOW CIRCUS TO OUR REGION DISPLAYING AN ARRAY OF DAZZLING ACTS DESIGNED TO MAKE US LAUGH, RIGID WITH FEAR AND MARVEL AT GREAT SKILL AND ACCURACY FROM THEIR TALENTED PERFORMERS.

Under a traditional Big Top, audiences are close to the action with those in ring side seats almost part of the show. Opening with classic Charlie Chaplin mime and old-fashioned “British Bobby” police officer their clever slapstick clowning performance had everyone in stitches. Whilst keeping with traditional acts such as draw dropping flying trapeze and impressive juggling, circuses have evolved over the years. Still staged in a round arena, originating from early 18th century acts involving horses, there are no longer animals performing. Replaced instead by daredevil motorcyclist, “The Flair Riders,” who somersaulted over our heads to shrieks from the engaged audiences. The Great Moscow Circus with an entourage of 50 personne including stagehands has been entertaining audiences for almost 60 years. Australian circus spokesperson, Mark Edgley owns the rights to the Great Moscow Circus name and employs professional circus personnel from all over the world. Kicking off their 2-week stint in Noosa was a VIP opening charity event hosted by Events4GreaterGood with all proceeds going to vulnerable women and families in Noosa. Covid restrictions have been debilitating for Mark and his team and the recent inclement weather caused additional headaches as well as the restricted publicity due to the deflated clowns. But in true show business style the show must go on and it did. With thanks to Noosa Pirates District Rugby 16

League Football Club for lending their grounds for this magnificent extravaganza, audiences were kept up to date with last minute changes, advice on appropriate wet weather footwear and additional shows for those who missed out during road closures. It is a treat to welcome the circus to town with live acrobats, scary motorcycle stunts, old fashioned mime, song, dance, glitter and bravery, it was enough to put a spring in everyone’s soggy Sunday morning step. We are very lucky in Noosa to be able to host this amazing set up. The Great Moscow Circus will be heading Bundaberg next. For those keen to run away and join the circus, in true 21 Century style, follow The Great Moscow Circus on social media. easternbeachesnews.com.au

GET ALONG TO CALENDAR GIRLS COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS’ PRODUCTION OF CALENDAR GIRLS WILL BE ON AT THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE FROM MARCH 25.

The story of a group of middle aged women who decide to create a fundraising calendar with a difference in support of cancer research after one of their husband’s died of Leukaemia, is a roller coaster of good humour, powerful friendship and big hearted generosity. The Coolum Theatre Players cast will produce their own calendar too, for sale at the shows, with money raised to be put towards the Katie Rose Cottage in Noosa which provides hospice support for people at the end of their lives. Tickets are $22 for members, $28 adult, $25 concession and are available from North Shore Realty in Coolum or online at www.coolumtheatre.com.au.
