New stats show how Peregian Springs has grown in the past five years.

POPULATION BOOMING WHAT A DIFFERENCE FIVE YEARS MAKE.

The early data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 Census has been released and it makes for interesting reading when it comes to the Peregian Springs Statistical Area, which incorporates Peregian Springs and Peregian Breeze. Since the 2016 Census another 3,357 people have moved to the area, taking our population as Census night 2021 to 10,694, up from 7,337 in 2016. As an area we have slightly more females than males, 52.3% versus 47.7% and our median age has increased from 37 years in 2016 to 38 years in 2021. When it comes to where we live, Peregian Springs News - August 2022

the number of private dwellings has increased from 2,727 in 2016 to 3,962 in 2021. Our median weekly household income has risen too. It was $1,502 per week in 2016, and it was recorded as $1,864 per week in 2021. The higher weekly income perhaps needed to pay for the higher mortgage payments, rising from a median of $2000 a month in 2016 to $2,147 in 2021. Rent jumped from a median of $480 a week in 2016 to $530 a week on Census night 2021 - and that was before the latest round of house price rises, mortgage and rent rises. Continued page 2

HIGH TECH PARKING INSPECTOR NOW MIGHT BE A GOOD TIME TO START PAYING EXTRA ATTENTION TO THE PARKING SIGNS IN THE SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL REGION, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT COMES TO TIME LIMITS.

As this edition of the magazine goes to print Sunshine Coast Council is mid-way through trialling a new hybrid parking-monitoring vehicle that uses number plate recognition technology, high-speed cameras and a GPS tracking to watch parking areas. The car has been in operation at Birtinya, Point Cartwright, Nicklin Way and Caloundra. Those who overstay their time during the trial and are caught by the car, will receive a warning letter in the mail. If it's the normal, on foot variety of parking inspector, it'll be under the ticket will be under the windscreen wiper. Sunshine Coast Council Customer Engagement and Planning Services Group Executive Debra Robinson said the new ParkSmart vehicle technology was already in use in other parts of Australia and aimed to encourage vehicle turnover, creating parking opportunities and allowing equitable and safe access to various locations across our region. “We want our residents and visitors to become familiar with the new approach to patrolling and as a result, it is intended that a four-week education program will start from

DANCING ON TO A WORLD STAGE FROM THE STUDIO ON THE TOP FLOOR OF THE COMMERCIAL CENTRE AT BALGOWNIE DRIVE TO THE WORLD.

When Deborah PreeceBrocksom and Richard Leader launched The Dance Centre Peregian Springs way back in 2009 they brought with them a vast experience performing and teaching ballet throughout Europe and America. Over the past 13 years the centre has continued to evolve and grow, supporting recreational and vocational dancers to follow their passion for dance as far as they’d like to take it. On the vocational front, dancers from The Dance Centre Peregian Springs can now be found throughout the world, studying and performing at the very highest levels. Former Peregian Springs’ residents and dancers Dayna Booth and Alfie Shacklock are now based overseas – with Dayna dancing in The State Theatre of Koblenz in Germany, and Alfie training as a Pre-Professional with The Royal Ballet in London where he’ll enter his graduation year from September this year. Other graduates from TDCPS have gone on to work and study throughout Australia, including Talena Cleyne, who dances with the State Ballet of Victoria, and Meg Tolputt who had entered the Queensland Ballet Academy. Peregian Beach resident Sophie Donald graduated from TDCPS to The Australian Ballet School Level 7. Deborah said the dance centre had built a creative, happy, caring and family-focused community at its busy home base with daily training for vocational students and 8

Performance group students dance at venues such as aged care centres, schools, and kindergartens and events like eisteddfods, the Showcase at The J Theatre and end of year concerts. TDCPS has had winners and finalists in the Alana Haines Awards in New Zealand, finalists in the Fonteyn Awards (worldwide), multiple finalists and winners of the Jacqueline Morland Awards QLD, finalists and winners of BPAC Scholarships and finalists in The Australian Ballet Inaugural Scholarships. “This year we have six vocational students with the Interstate and Invitee Programme of The Australian Ballet School and six students in the Associate Programme of the Queensland Ballet,” Deborah said. peregianspringsnews.com.au

The two runners-up were drawing artist Dan Hannay and musician and multi-cultural teacher Samuela Taukave AKA Skillz FJ, who were each awarded a cheque for $5000. The ‘Fuel Your Passion’ competition was shaped by the Eumundi Brewery team as a way to support and fuel the passion of the many artists and innovators on the Coast – aware that the last couple of years have been particularly challenging for the arts and creative sector. Eumundi Brewery Head Brewer Chris Sheehan said the final eight were put to a public vote, with Claire and her incredible mural work emerging victorious. “Full credit to Claire – for such magnificent work, and work with real heart that clearly resonated with local voters,” Chris said. MENTAL HEALTH HITS ONE IN FOUR ALMOST ONE IN FOUR AUSTRALIANS SUFFERED A MENTAL DISORDER IN 2020-21.

The results of the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last month showed 21.4% of the population reported suffering a mental disorder. Anxiety was the most common group (16.8%), followed by affective disorders like depression (7.5%) and substance abuse (3.3%). Drilling down on the age groups affected, the study found around 1.1 million (39.6%) young adults aged 16-24 years experienced a mental health disorder in 2020-21. Speaking after the results were released Australian Psychological Society president Tamara Cavenett said the Federal Government needed to urgently commit more funding for mental health services to help the sector to manage demand. “There is no doubt that the situation has gotten far worse since the completion of the survey over a year ago,” Ms Cavenett said. “As a society we can’t afford to have millions 14

of people spiralling into under or untreated mental health disorders that have the potential to change trajectory of their lives and ours forever. “We are talking about less teachers, doctors, judges and firefighters because untreated mental disorders stopped people achieving their dreams”. Recent APS research found nationally 1 in 3 psychologists are unable to take new patients due to overwhelming demand. Before the pandemic this was 1 in 100. The APS has called for university funding for psychology to be brought in line with medicine, dentistry and veterinarian studies. It has also suggested replicating GP regional relocation incentives for psychologists, including wiping off HECS-HELP debt, introduce higher regional Medicare rebates, investing in paid opportunities for provisional psychologists to work in supervised positions and ensuring regional communities have sufficient internet access to utilise telehealth. The APS have asked that the temporary 10 additional Medicare subsidised sessions added for COVID, be made permanent too. peregianspringsnews.com.au

MAD COW FEAR PUT TO PASTURE AUSTRALIA’S BLOOD BANK IS OPEN TO BUSINESS FOR ABOUT 18,000 POTENTIAL DONORS AFTER A DECISION TO ALLOW PEOPLE WHO WERE LIVING IN THE UK DURING THE `MAD COW’ DISEASE ERA OF 1980 TO 1996 TO DONATE BLOOD AGAIN.

Since December 2000 anyone who had been living in the UK for six months or more during that period of time was deemed ineligible to donate blood for fear of passing on the human variant of the disease – otherwise known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD). The variant is fatal, with no screening test available to identify carriers and an incubation period of years. Cath Stone, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Executive Director of Donor Services, said Lifeblood hoped to welcome new donors as the change comes into effect. “It’s taken some time; however, we’re so

"We’re fortunate to have one of the safest blood supplies in the world, and we’re continuing our focus to make it easier for all Australians to donate, while ensuring our blood supply remains safe for patients”. Above & beyond - next-level service and communication I have not had such an amazing experience with Real Estate agents before. I have had good experiences but the level of service from Wayne & Liza was above and beyond, absolute next level service. Being a busy Mum, I knew it was going to take me weeks to prepare and get ready for sale. That’s where Wayne & Liza stepped in and assisted me every step of the way. I was on the market in a week. From there the communication and support I received was beyond anything I have ever received in the past. Then, to top it off, a result I am extremely happy with in just 14 days is incredible. I highly recommend Wayne & Liza if you’re thinking of selling your home.

NEW BOOK EARNS A ROYAL NOD TACKLING THE TOUGH TOPIC OF WAR AND AUSTRALIA’S PART IN IT IS AT THE HEART OF SUNSHINE COAST AUTHOR ALLISON PATERSON’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE AUSTRALIA REMEMBERS SERIES BY BIG SKY PUBLISHING.

In June, her latest book, Cameron Baird VC, MG – Dedicated, Courageous and Born to Lead, was officially launched at Government house in Canberra by Their Excellencies, Governor General David Hurley and his wife Linda Hurley. The book for children aged 8-12 is about Australia’s most recent experiences in war through the life of Australia’s 100th Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Cameron Baird VC, MG, who died while trying to rescue a fellow solider while on duty in Oruzgan province in Afghanistan on June 22, 2013. It is an inspiring story of mateship, dedication, leadership and great valour. Allison said a per cent of Big Sky Publishing’s proceeds from the book would be directed to the support of veterans through the charity Cam’s Cause and she he had also donated a large number of signed books to the cause to be sold via their website at www.camscause. org. The book is the third in the Australia Remembers series written by Allison, who has also written three children’s picture books, Granny’s Place, Shearing Time, and I Wonder, and, as a Children’s Rights Queensland Ambassador authored their 2022 picture book for children, The Right To Be Me. Speaking at the launch Mrs Hurley said as a former teacher she knew the book would be well received by the children. “It is beautifully written, easy to read, the material is presented in an engaging way, and there is lots of colour and plenty of pictures,” she said. “Cameron’s story will, I’m sure, help to 22

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

WIN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT BLUE CARBON GRANT

I was pleased to find out that Sunshine Coast Council and its grant partners were successful in securing $2 million in funding through the Commonwealth Government’s Blue Carbon Ecosystem Restoration Grants for the Blue Heart project. Blue Carbon is carbon that is stored in marine and coastal ecosystems and includes carbon stored in the bodies of plants and animals as well in debris and soil. As Blue Carbon ‘farming’ is a potential economic opportunity for Blue Heart private landholders, the grant funding provides a timely opportunity to demonstrate Blue Carbon restoration and its benefits. The Blue Heart will contribute to further progressing our collective understanding of Blue Carbon ecosystems and the benefits they provide to biodiversity, fishing, water quality, recreation and coastal protection.

Council picks up 250,000 bins a week and we want to get every one right. MAJOR GRANT APPLICANTS

Division 9 community groups with project ideas to make the Sunshine Coast more active, vibrant, creative, inclusive or resilient are invited to apply for a major grant. More than $500,000 in funding is up for grabs in the latest Major Grants round, which is now open and closes on August 29. Major Grant applications can be submitted in one of six categories, Community Development, Community Facilities, Creative Development, Cultural Heritage, Economic Development and Sports and Recreation. For more information visit sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au and search ‘Major Grants’.

TREKKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE By Fiona Ewington FOR SOME LOCALS, WINTER IS A FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR. THE COLOURS ARE CRISP AND CLEAR, THE TIDES REACH SPECTACULARLY LOW LEVELS AND THE VIEWS ON THE CLEAR DAYS STRETCH AS FAR SOUTH AS POINT CARTWRIGHT.

Participants taking part in the recent “Coastrek” event, who walked along our beautiful coastline from Currimundi to Noosa on Friday 15 July, were treated to a picture perfect day along our beautiful stretch. Over 2,300 trekkers took part in this annual Sunshine Coast event, run by event organisers, Wild Women On Top, trekking either 60km or 30km in teams of four along our region’s most spectacular coastline, raising funds for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service. The coastal trail highlights included Coolum and Peregian Beach, Sunrise and Sunshine Beach finishing in the Noosa Woods. Witnessing the hordes of trekkers on Sunrise Beach was an incredible site. Walkers could be seen as far as the eye could see, both north and south. Some trekkers dressed in active wear, some in crazy costumes and many athletes carried hiking poles. There were signs pitched along the sand dunes with words of friendly encouragement. Established in 2004, Wild Women On Top is one of Australia’s largest and longest running women’s health movements. Their mission is to connect, coach and champion women in the outdoors through community hiking adventures. Their flagship Coastrek program of events, takes place in various locations around Australia. Community Ambassador, Peta O’Brien, returned for her second Coastrek this year and tackled the 60km distance. After experiencing the loss of her sister in a 28

tragic accident in 2020, Peta found training and participating in Coastrek helped her recover. Coastrek includes a dedicated 6-12week training program ensuring all trekkers are well prepared and get the most out of the experience that raises funds for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service. This year’s Sunshine Coast event was a momentous success with a record number of athletes taking part, raising a staggering $1,551,000. In addition to raising funds, trekkers were able to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of walking in nature. Our beaches put on a fantastic show, displaying warm sunshine, light gentle breezes, incredibly low tides, and the freshest, cleanest air. We are so lucky to have this piece of natural beauty on our doorstep. For anyone wishing to take part in Coastrek in the Sunshine Coast or at other Australian locations please check out the Coastrek website. peregianspringsnews.com.au

Are you suffering with back pain? Back pain? It is very common to suffer from a ‘disc injury’ and we have all heard about the dreaded disc bulge! The good news is, although a disc injury can be very painful, it can also be effectively treated and managed. Here are our key tips: • Understand your pain. A lumbar disc is simply a thick ligament between the vertebrae and can sustain injury similar to an ankle sprain. Initially there can be inflammation that can narrow the space for nerves. Once this swelling subsides it’s time to start moving and get strong again! • In the acute phase - minimise sitting and bending that create a painful stretch to the lumbar spine. Talk to your GP about reducing inflammation. • Rest but don’t retire. Research has found that avoiding all movement can make you worse. Try gentle walking or pool work to get you moving. • Seek treatment early! Get individual assessment and treatment to help you move forward.
