WHAT’S ON

STAGE FUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE THERE’S SURE TO BE A FEW LAUGHS AND SOME GREAT FUN HAD AT COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE IN MARCH AND APRIL WHEN COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS TACKLE TIM FIRTH’S CALENDAR GIRLS.

The show is based on the true story of a group of middle-aged Yorkshire women who decided to take off their clothes and pose for a calendar to raise money for cancer research after one of their husband’s died with Leukaemia. In keeping with the spirit of the play, and the movie of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, the Coolum Theatre Players cast will be producing a calendar too, with all money raised from its sale going to the Katie Rose Cottage in Noosa which provides hospice care for those at the end of their lives. Director Barbara Ryan said she was excited to be bringing the show to the stage. “This play is a particular favourite of mine and is the second time I’ve been given the opportunity to direct it,” Barbara said. “Whilst it may be known for its nude scene, the story is so much more. It’s a beautiful story of a group of women who are there for each other through life’s ups and downs, through the fun times and through the dark days of deep loss.”
