The Duck Pond park on The Avenue became an inland sea last week.

WATERLOGGED LIVING SIX DAYS OF RAIN INCLUDING ONE WITH MORE THAN 370MM SAW THE ROADS, PARKS AND STREETS OF PEREGIAN SPRINGS AND PEREGIAN BREEZE INUNDATED WITH WATER LAST WEEK.

The playground at The Duckpond Park had close waterfront views as the path around the pond went under and water crept over picnic sets, walking bridges and the viewing platform. At Peregian Breeze the road was blocked near the entrance to Peregian Beach College for several hours as water pooled at the lowest point. Peregian Springs News - March 2022

School was cancelled on February 28 as the State Government urged everyone to stay home and away from flooded roads while the clean up began. The Bruce Highway was closed to the north at Gympie and south from Caloundra to Caboolture for at least 24 hours, affecting the re-supply of local supermarkets which left residents with the strange sensation of walking in to find fresh food sections totally stripped of product on Monday night. It is expected there will continue to be transport challenges at least a week in the wake of flooding along the east coast as far as Lismore.

FROM THE ED’S DESK That’s probably the best way to describe the end of February at Peregian Springs. For days on end the rain has fallen, gradually pushing up the water levels on the ponds, golf course and low lying areas, around here and prompting wide spread flooding to our north. Spare a thought for the people of Pomona and Cooran where more than 1100mm of rain sent floodwaters rushing through their towns, and those homes and businesses along the Noosa River that found themselves with water pouring through their premises destroying everything in its path. Our local volunteers, council workers, emergency services personnel and experts from our utilities companies who have rushed to help those in need, to fix the power,

unblock the drains and roll out the tarps, deserve every bit of praise we can throw their way, and all of our support over the coming weeks and months as the big clean up begins. While the rain has hopefully gone for now, the damage to roads, homes and infrastructure will be ongoing. For those looking to find a tangible way to help out, Clean Up Australia Day on March 6 might be just such an opportunity. The annual event, now in its 32nd year, managed to attract more than 1600 registrations from Sunshine Coast residents last year, collecting more than 200 wheelie bins full of rubbish in the day. There’s every chance that record could be beaten this year given the rubbish around right now. See page 18 for details on where to register. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine, Geoff

BODY CORPORATE FEES TO RISE OWNERS LIVING IN THE RIDGES ESTATE CAN EXPECT TO PAY A LITTLE MORE FOR BODY CORPORATE FEES IN THE FUTURE AS THE FINAL STAGES OF THE DEVELOPMENT COME TO A CLOSE.

In a letter to members of the East Village Ridges CTS 41995, body corporate chairman Roger Cook explained that changes to the structure of the Principal Body Corporate, with the Aveo/FKP lots and the other lots on either side of Koel Circuit removed from the scheme, meant less income coming in to be used to pay for body corporate services such as security, road and garden maintenance. The changes also mean that for the first time, the Principal Body Corporate is now in the hands of “real” Ridges property owners rather than the developer which previously held the

4

majority of the positions on the board and a 51% financial stake. “In line with teh rules published in the Community Management Statement (CMS) for the Scheme, whilst there were developer lots existing, the developer, FKP, had 50% + 1 of the total Lot Entitlements for the Scheme. In this way, the developer (s) could always be sure that they had the controlling vote during the development phase. “As a result of having the 50% + 1 Lot Entitlements, the developers also had to contribute 50% of the Scheme’s income to both the adminstration fund and sinking fund. “This also had the effect of making body corporate fees cheaper and therefore more attractive to new buyers. “However, given that these entitlements have been liquidated over the last few months,

peregianspringsnews.com.au

the Scheme has lost half of its income.” Mr Cook goes on to explain that currently the PBC pays FKP for access to the Rec Club on a fee calculated on total lots. With the developer lots out, that fee will decrease by 50%. He says while the actual fee rise will need to be formally established by Budgets and cofirmed by Annual General Meetings of the various sub body corporates, he estimates an increase of at least $400 per lot per year is likely. Each Body Corporate will also be required to vote on whether to accept the FKP/Aveo offer for the PBC to take over ownership of the Rec Club from July in a deal that would see the club handed to the PBC in exchange for the rental income from its commercial spaces for a period of 30 years. There are seven subsidiary body corporates in the Ridges scheme that roll up into the Principal Body Corporate. Every owner will be

asked to vote on the motion (s) to acquire the Rec Club this month in order to meet an April deadline on accepting the offer or declining it.

GREAT START TO THE NEW YEAR MEMBERS AND GUESTS AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING OF THE PEREGIAN FAMILY AND FRIENDS GROUP WERE TREATED TO SOME GOOD NEWS ON LOCAL PROJECTS THEY HAVE BEEN BACKING FOR YEARS.

The best news, particularly for members of the original Family and Friends group, founded in 2017, was that the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club had met the milestones required to become independent again from 2022/23 season. Peregian Family & Friends President Leigh McCready, who founded the original Peregian Beach organisation in 2017 prior to the merger with the Peregian Springs Residents Association told the February 13 meeting the good news.

“Today we’ve reached several important milestones, with a new Supporter’s Club and committee established, a 10 year lease negotiation with Noosa Council commenced and confirmation that from the 22/23 season, the Peregian Surf Club will be an independent entity once again after eight years.” “Peregian Beach is the closest beach for around 15,000 people across Peregian, with a population big enough to support all the requirements of our local surf club - around 120 lifesaving volunteers, a thriving nipper program which educates children from across the whole area and a stable income stream. “In 2021, Peregian Family and Friends raised substantial funds for the Peregian Beach Surf Club, both for current operational needs as well as to rebuild the clubhouse in the future, as it is currently not fit for purpose.

“Peregian Family & Friends is the Coast’s only resident’s association which spans both shire and electorate boundaries. Our organisation has grown from strength to strength, with our most important achievement so far being leading the community effort to revive the Peregian Surf Club.” Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club Chair John Roderick shared more news on the surf club at the meeting, followed by Councillor Maria Suarez (SCRC Division 9) who provided an update on the process for investigating a community centre in Peregian Springs and confirmed that she had sought advice from TransLink on whether there were plans for more bus services in the Peregian Springs and Peregian Breeze area and the answer was no. NEW ERA FOR OUR SURF CLUB AN INDEPENDENT, COMMUNITYBASED SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB AT PEREGIAN BEACH (PBSLSC) IS ONE STEP CLOSER.

The right mix of enthusiatic volunteers backed by local community organisations and the strong support of Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast Branch and Advisory Board, Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club and state governing body Surf Life Saving Queensland, have created the right environment for Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club to become an independent entity from the 2022/23 season. Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Working Group Chair John Roderick, who has led the final push to the line for a project three years in the making, said it was a good result for those keen to have their own club. “There’s been an enormous amount of hard work and collaborative effort to demonstrate that we have the determination, community support and local Peregian surf lifesavers to return the Peregian Club to independence when the time was right,” Mr Roderick said. “The rejuvenated Peregian Nippers program, and recent growth in the number of Nippers parents and local adults undertaking lifesaving training are healthy indicators that we are now ready to drive the growth of the new Club.”

12

A new Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Supporter’s Club committee has been established and will work to generate a sustainable income stream to support the Lifesaving Club. Equally important will be a focus on social and member events. “We wish to thank and acknowledge Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, President Ross Fisher, his committee, members and staff for their enormous support over the past eight years as well as the many volunteers who have generously committed their time and expertise to ensure that previous years and the 2021-2022 season has been successful on and off the beach,” Mr Roderick said. “We are sure this relationship will strengthen over the years ahead. “It is an exciting time to join the Club and we are looking forward to working with members and the community to create a new path forward that unites us. “We also encourage input and support from members of the Peregian community and we invite you to contact us with any questions you may have.” If you would like to be part of our family friendly club please contact us at hello@ peregiansurfclub.com.

HEARING LOSS CAN START EARLIER THAN YOU THINK SOME 1.1 BILLION YOUNG PEOPLE (AGED 12-35 YEARS) ARE AT RISK OF PERMANENT HEARING LOSS FROM LISTENING TO MUSIC AT LOUD VOLUMES OVER PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME, ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION.

Hearing loss has potentially devastating consequences for mental health, education and employment. “More and more young people are placing themselves at risk of irreversible damage to their hearing with daily use of personal audio devices”, Noosa Hearing principal audiologist Deidré Breytenbach said. “Young adults should be made aware that once you lose your hearing, it won’t come back,” Deidre said. “Simple preventative actions such as turning the volume down, taking short listening breaks and restricting daily use of personal audio devices to less than one hour may help lessen the risk.” Safe listening depends on the intensity, or loudness of sound, and the duration and frequency of listening. Exposure to loud sounds can result in temporary hearing loss or tinnitus which is a ringing sensation in the ear. When the exposure is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it can lead to permanent damage. The focus this World Hearing Day, March 3, 2022, is on the importance of ‘safe listening’ as a means of maintaining good hearing health across your lifespan. ‘Safe Listening’ is not just for those working in noisy environments. It also applies to the child in your care. Starting early with prevention techniques can only lead to better, overall hearing health leading to the theme of this year’s day as: “To 14

hear for life, listen with care”. This year’s theme will focus on the importance and means of hearing loss prevention through safe listening, with the following key messages from WHO: • It is possible to have good hearing across the course of life through ear and hearing care. • Many common causes of hearing loss can be prevented, including hearing loss caused by exposure to loud sounds. • ‘Safe listening’ can mitigate the risk of hearing loss associated with recreational sound exposure. Deidré, an Audiologist with over 10 years of experience, says everyone, at all ages should regularly have a hearing test. Ongoing monitoring means changes can be responded to quickly. An initial hearing assessment typically takes around an hour and is tailored to be enjoyable and engaging for young children, teens and adults alike. A comprehensive hearing assessment may be fully subsidised if you are a DVA or pension card holder (conditions apply under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program). Noosa Hearing also offers over the counter or custom-made hearing protection such as musician earplugs. Noosa Hearing operates within the longestablished Noosa Optical. It comes in the wake of reports that in many sectors, including hospitality, retail, transport, medical and administration, staff are experiencing an increase in customer anger and abuse. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said staff don’t deserve to be treated poorly. “Everyone is doing their best, so please remember to keep kindness front of mind in all your interactions. If you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s best not to say anything at all,” Mayor Jamieson said. See www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Business/COVID-19-Support-for-Business/

HOBBLING WITH HEEL PAIN? Plantar fasciitis: Medial heel pain with prolonged periods of standing, first thing in the morning or walking on a hard surfaces.

Are you waking up first thing in the morning and hobbling with heel pain? Is your walking or running capacity limited by heel pain? Is your heel pain is becoming chronic? There can be many reasons for developing heel pain. Common reasons can include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendon problems or referral of pain from the lower back. It is essential that you have an accurate assessment and diagnosis so a treatment pathway can be formed. Here are some tips from the Synergy Physio team to explain the two most common causes of heel pain.

Peregian Springs News - March 2022

Causes include tight calf muscles, poor footwear, loss of foot arch strength and weight gain. Try regular calf stretches and more supportive footwear including our archies! However to fully recover a specific strengthening program is often needed. Achilles tendon pain: Felt toward the back of the heel, achilles tendon pain is often caused by tendon weakness. Stretches don’t usually help! Other causes include poor footwear, a sudden increase in walking or running or poor running technique. The key to resolving this is an accurate assessment and a specific tendon strengthening program.

Our team love helping the community with their health! We offer thorough assessment with longer initial consultations so you don’t feel rushed. We offer hands on therapy, exercise rehabilitation classes, massage, after hours appointments and on the spot claims.

EXTRA MONEY FOR BUSHFIRES MORE BUSHFIRE FUNDING

As you would remember, Peregian Springs was devastated by the Black Summer Bushfires just over two years ago. ARE YOU READY TO CARE? At IFYS Foster Care we know every child deserves to be safe, nurtured, cared for and loved. We also know that adults are crucial in ensuring children are safe from abuse and harm. At IFYS we hope of a world where every child lives a life that is free of hurt and trauma and they grow up in a caring and nurturing family knowing they are loved. Sadly, this is just not the reality for many children who have to enter the child protection system through no fault of their own.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

TIPS FOR TACKLING THOSE FEARS Russia declared war, Covid is running ramped through our community, our economy is moving around like the waves in the ocean … How do we keep ourselves on a even keel and manage our fear? Understand your fear. Fear is designed to keep you safe, helping you recognise danger and act accordingly. Embrace the fear as instruction and let it inform your actions and decisions, but not control your life. Acknowledge what you are fearing as it can help give you strength and focus to overcome it. Think long term. If I look at my shares with a short term mindset I would become quiet depressed. However keeping a long term mindset reminds me that the share market is an investment over many years. We can easily get caught up in short term fears however if we can face our fears with resilience and strength and eyes looking to the future we can overcome them. Thinking about the long term won’t fix the short term problem but will help you keep it in perspective and think about it objectively. Support each other. Sharing our fears with others, encouraging each other, picking each other up when down

are some great benefits of having supportive relationships in your life. Last weekend, a friend and I held a snake (we’re both petrified of snakes) for the first time. If we become insular and withdraw, our fears can weigh us down. We are in it together, so draw on the community that is around you. Ensure you maintain your social connections during challenge and fearful times. Our greatest inspiration can come by watching others overcome their fears and learning from them. Keep your social media balanced. It is important to stay informed and updated but too much time on social media can create fear, panic and hysteria. Should you feel your fear rising, turn social media off for a couple of hours or a day. There is a lot of misinformation so make sure you are acquiring information from reliable sources. Focus on what you can control. There are so many things outside our control and worrying about them won’t change anything. Focus on what is around as this will help prevent you from fearing what you cannot control. Fear does not have to control your life so chose today to rise above it! * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School
