GOLF AND REC CLUBS FOR SALE REAL ESTATE AGENCY COLLIERS HAS BEEN APPOINTED BY AVEO TO SEEK EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE RECREATION CENTRE AT PEREGIAN SPRINGS, AND BY PEREGIAN GOLF HOLDINGS LTD TO SEEK EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE GOLF COURSE AND CLUB HOUSE.

In a statement released on October 20, Aveo said it made the decision to seek Expressions of Interest for the Recreational Facility following confirmation from the Principal Body Corporate of the recent vote by owners against the motion to transfer ownership of the Facility to the Body Corporate. Its statement said the management of commercial recreational facilities is not aligned to Aveo’s core business, which is why "we have decided to sell the Peregian Springs

Recreational Facility". Aveo Head of Development Gary Kordic said: “It is our intention to seek purchasers who have expertise in the commercial operation of Recreational Facilities for the benefit of the wider community. "We are mindful that the Recreational Facility is currently closed, and we intend to move forward on a swift marketing campaign and our hope is for a successful outcome as soon as possible and to provide certainty over the Recreational Facility’s future." he said. The Colliers website listing says the rec club, including all of the buildings, the tennis court, gym and pool, is part of the package with expressions of interest closing on Thursday, November 24 at 4pm. The listing for the golf course calls for expressions of interest in buying the course and club house, closing by November 29.

NEW SERVICE SET TO SAVE LIVES STOPPING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BEFORE IT STARTS IS THE AIM OF AN AUSTRALIAN-FIRST INITIATIVE BY SUNSHINE COAST CHARITY SUNNYKIDS.

Save A Life Tonight (S.A.L.T.) focuses on immediately disrupting the threats and potential of domestic violence. General Manager Kathleen Hope said SunnyKids needed the support of generous Sunshine Coast donors to offer families an option before an incident of family violence occurred. “There is nothing like this in Australia. For just $300, you could literally save a life,” Ms Hope said. “This initiative will see families at threat of domestic violence immediately access a night’s hotel accommodation, food and basic hygiene products.”

Most assistance programs take days, if not weeks, to access, but SunnyKids wants to help to stop domestic violence before it starts to ensure risky and violent behaviour doesn’t become normalised in our homes. “Through this immediate interruption, we can then support people to make empowered decisions and provide family counselling,” Ms Hope said. Sunshine Coast Mayor and SunnyKids patron Mark Jamieson said the initiative would create more opportunities for the charity to work with parents and provide more support for children at risk. To learn more about S.A.L.T. and how to donate, visit sunnykids.org.au. If you are unsafe right now call 000. If you need SunnyKids during business hours, call 5479 0394 or 1800 811 811 after hours.

BIOSPHERE COMMITTEE FORMED THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF ABORIGINAL LEARNINGS ARE BEING CALLED ON TO HELP GUIDE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SUNSHINE COAST BIOSPHERE.

The area was officially recognised as a UNESCO biosphere earlier this year, and representatives of the Jinibara People Aboriginal Corporation and Kabi Kabi First Nations Traditional Custodians have key roles in the newly formed Sunshine Coast Biosphere Coordinating Committee. Kabi Kabi Elder Aunty Helena Gulash said sustainability was a major strength of Traditional Custodians, as it had been for many thousands of years. “This is an exciting opportunity to revitalise our connections and identify potential areas where we can lead the way,” she said. Jinibara Elder Colin Ross said the implementation was about interpreting what

the designation meant for First Nations people and future generations. The Sunshine Coast Biosphere Coordinating Committee members are: Mayor Mark Jamieson (Chair); Emma Thomas, Council CEO (Deputy Chair); Will Shrapnel, Sunshine Coast Biosphere Community Advisory Group Chair; Uncle Colin Ross, Jinibara Elder; Aunty Helena Gulash, Kabi Kabi Elder; Maria Suarez, Division 9 and Environment Portfolio Councillor; David Law, Division 10 Councillor; Terry Landsberg, Division 2 Councillor; Bill Haddrill, Council Acting Group Executive, Liveability and Natural Assets; Greg Laverty, Council Group Executive, Economic and Community Development; plus a Queensland Government representative. DO YOU KNOW A FRIENDLY DOG? DO YOU HAVE A FRIENDLY DOG WHO IS GOOD WITH CHILDREN AND LOVES TO LISTEN?

If so, you and your four-legged friend could be just what local Story Dogs coordinator Mel Jones is looking for. Story Dogs is a not-for-profit charity operating in 389 schools Australia wide, helping over 2800 students each week to develop literacy and a love of reading. Mel is signing up volunteers to help on the Sunshine Coast from the start of the new school year in 2023. The commitment is around two hours each week, during school terms, with you and your dog visiting a nearby primary school to work, one-on-one, with up to six Year 2 children who need help with reading. Each child spends 20 minutes reading to your dog while you assist with any challenges they have working through an age-appropriate book. Based on a successful American literacy program, Story Dogs provides a safe and relaxed environment where the children don’t feel judged. Mel is one of a number of coordinators for the Sunshine Coast region, with her area stretching from Maroochydore to Peregian Springs. In partnership with her furry friend Rhett, Mel has been volunteering at Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools for the past two years, and has now taken on the local coordinator role as well. Her own experience as a volunteer has been nothing but positive. “I just think learning to read is such a fundamental thing – if you can't read, you can't learn,” Mel said. “These kids can start off at the beginning of the year quite hesitant and a little embarrassed that they’re not good readers, and then to see them picking it up and becoming more confident is very rewarding.” Peregian Springs News - November- 2022

Mel Jones and her furry friend Rhett.

To become part of the Story Dogs team, you and your pet just need to meet a few basic requirements. Dog owners must apply for a Blue Card to allow them to work with children, and the dogs are assessed to ensure they’re also suitable for the role. “It's not at all onerous – they just need to be up to date with their vaccinations, be registered and then it’s a simple 20-minute assessment to make sure the dog is friendly, can cope with noise, and is reasonably well behaved,” Mel said. And dogs don’t have to be of the small and fluffy variety to make the Story Dogs team. “We have a range of dogs from very small to massive,” Mel said. “We've got poodles and we've got chihuahuas, but we’ve also got someone with a Bull Arab that they take into the school.” Continued page 10 9

LOCAL NEWS - STORY DOGS

From page 9 In a perfect world, volunteers would be available every week for the entire school year, but Mel’s realistic enough to know that’s unlikely for everyone. “It’s volunteer work so it’s not like you have to be locked in,” Mel said. "If you need to go away to travel for a while, that’s fine. When you return, you can just pick up where you left off.” Experience has shown it takes about six weeks to get the owner/dog ready to start working with children, so the goal is to have a new group of volunteers trained up for Term 1. “And then it's all about slowly helping the kids to be more confident,” Mel said. “They don't feel judged if they're sitting there reading to a dog. It's a safe, quiet space where nothing’s rushed.” Instead of children viewing it as embarrassing, or punishment because they're not a good reader, it's instead seen as an exciting part of their schooling. “All the kids want to go out with the Story Dog when we collect someone from the classroom,” Mel said. “And a child that I'm taking out goes, ‘no, it's only for special people’. So it's nice that they think that it’s a positive, rather than some kind of punishment for not being able to read.” While the dogs obviously have a crucial role to play, the human touch from the volunteers is equally important.

“It could be just holding the book while the child pats the dog, or helping them with word sounds they're not comfortable with,” Mel said. "Lots of positive reinforcement, encouragement, getting them to try things – having a shot at a word they may not know.” And it's not always the case that the children simply aren't good readers. “It could just be a confidence thing,” Mel said. “Sometimes a child is a reasonably good reader for their age, but just doesn't have the confidence to read out loud. So it's developing that a little bit more.” Currently Mel has four state schools in her area signed up to the Story Dogs program (Maroochydore, Bli Bli, Pacific Paradise and Coolum), with some already having multiple volunteers. At Coolum State School, for example, Mel attends on Tuesdays, while two other pairings cover Wednesdays and Fridays. As new volunteers come forward, Mel will contact their local schools to outline the Story Dogs program and all it has to offer, with plenty of other schools on the Coast ready and willing to talk about their own success stories. To learn more yourself, visit www.storydogs. org.au, click on Join Us, and you can review the volunteer application package and submit your expression of interest. You can also contact Mel Jones on 0411 274 892 to organise a meet and greet to learn how you and your dog can join the Story Dogs team. LIVE, LOVE AND SELLING IN PEREGIAN SPRINGS

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS By Graeme Wilson PICTURE THIS ALL YOU KEEN PHOTOGRAPHERS … ONE MAN’S LOVE FOR TRAINING AND DESIRE TO SHARE HIS KNOWLEDGE CAN TAKE YOUR BEST PHOTOS AND MAKE THEM BETTER.

Since retiring to the Sunshine Coast 20 years ago, John Dumble has trained hundreds of University of the Third Age (U3A) students in photo enhancement and is now keen to educate others through one-on-one courses at his Coolum home. While only fully embracing his own passion for photography on retirement, John’s long working life as a trainer for the Army, and then Mercedes-Benz, gave him a solid base when it first came to sharing his intimate understanding of the Adobe programs Lightroom and Photoshop. “My wife often says the Army has a lot to answer for with regards to some of my strange ways, and I’m sure she's right,” he laughed. “But it was there that I honed my skills as a trainer. I was not aware of just how important those skills would be for me once I left the service.” One of the key learnings from John’s Army years was the importance of clear and concise technical instructions, commencing at ground level, for those learning new skills. “All students like having well-written notes handed out,” he said. “If they’re trying to listen and scribble notes at the same time, and then try to understand what they’ve written when they get home, it's terrible. I've been there and I know.” So students on John’s courses receive carefully crafted notes to help them once Peregian Springs News - November- 2022

A passion for photography prompted John Dumble to develop training to help people enhance their snaps.

they’ve left the classroom environment. “It means they don’t have to scribble things down themselves, and can just concentrate on learning what they need to know.” John’s “training world” began back in 1967 when he took on a job teaching Army tradesmen about the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicle equipment. Various Army training roles followed, but in 1984 he left the “green machine” and signed up with Mercedes-Benz to help with the smooth introduction of 1900 Unimog trucks into the armed forces. After that job was completed, he became a full-time truck trainer for the company in Victoria and retired in that role aged 61, prompting the move to Coolum and more time to invest in his interest of photography. “After about one year retired, I found I missed training and heard of this University of the Third Age,” John said. “Volunteers with any skills of any kind could offer their services to teach other retired members, so I jumped on the wagon and am still a tutor at the Sunshine Coast U3A (at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs).” Continued, page 14 13

LOCAL PROFILE - JOHN DUMBLE

From page 13 Courses he teaches there are Introduction to Your DSLR Camera, Adobe Lightroom Classic, and Adobe Photoshop, the latter two being the courses he’s now also offering privately from home. His one-on-one courses are run in roughly four or five two-hour blocks, with flexible timing and a low cost he feels everyone will be comfortable with. “I’m not motivated by a financial need, but more because I enjoy training and helping other photography enthusiasts,” John said. “And I don’t focus too much on the clock … if it takes two and a half hours, who cares. And if you’re not available one day or one week, we’ll just do it the next.” If not already familiar with the program, John recommends all students start with the Lightroom course, which concentrates on simply enhancing photos to achieve the best result. “If you’ve taken a nice photo and just want to enhance it, you don't really have to go past Lightroom,” John said. “But if you want to change the sky, or add backgrounds, or combine separate photos, then you need Photoshop.” John said many people had a fear of Photoshop, thinking its use of different layers could be too difficult to master. “But when it's explained properly, it's not that hard to understand. That's my thing – I

With a bit of training, some patience, and a great idea, you too, could be creating photo art like the image above.

like to train, I like to teach, I like to see people learn and improve,” he said. “One could also argue that as we age, we still like to think we are of some value in society.” To find out more about the Lightroom and Photoshop courses (or alternatively free photo editing apps such as GIMP), call John on mobile on 0414 913 109 or email him at vk4jtd@exemail.com.au.

LOCAL NEWS

ARE YOU READY FOR STORMS? PREDICTIONS OF A SUMMER OF WILD WEATHER ON THE SUNSHINE COAST HAVE PROMPTED WARNINGS FOR RESIDENTS TO PREPARE FOR THE WORST.

Sunshine Coast Council has joined with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to urge the community to be ready for the return of a La Niña weather system. A Get Ready Queensland Week was held last month after advice from the Bureau of Meteorology that La Niña would increase the chance of above-average rainfall during spring and summer. Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chair and Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said long-time locals knew disasters could strike quickly. “It’s not a matter of if, but when, so that’s why it’s important to prepare now so you are best placed to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at us,” Cr Jamieson said. “Though Council and the LDMG continue preparations all year round, each of us has a role to play and being prepared is everyone’s responsibility.” Cr Jamieson said there were a few simple steps to safeguard your family and home: • Understand your risk. • Prepare a household emergency plan. • Pack an emergency kit.

An emergency kit should have enough supplies to last three days in case your home is without power, water or gas, or you lose access to the supermarket or pharmacy. Cr Jamieson said the kit should be kept in a strong, waterproof container and, like a first aid kit, include important medication, a torch, spare batteries, hand sanitiser, enough food and water for three days and a batterypowered radio. For a full list, visit the Get Ready Queensland website, getready.qld.gov.au. “I encourage everyone to save a copy of the list and stock up on essentials next time you’re grocery shopping,” Cr Jamieson said. Parts of the Sunshine Coast are still recovering from the heavy rain that hit the region between February and May, which caused flooding, fallen trees and major landslips. Cr Jamieson reminded residents to keep safe on the road and to remember “If it’s flooded, forget it”. For more on the latest updates, practical resources and what to do before, during and after an emergency, visit Council’s Disaster Hub website: disasterhub.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au.-

Local Sunshine Coast author has done it again Alan Sampson was awarded the national Finch Memoir Prize at the 2015 Sydney Writers Festival for ’Schools of Fish’. His latest novel, ‘FIST’ has just arrived and has been receiving 5 star reviews: ‘A riveting heart felt story.’ ’The perfect book if you are looking for an escape.’ ‘A gripping story of domestic violence , hope and loss.’ FIST is available now from leading websites including Booktopia and Barnes and Noble. 18

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

BE PATIENT WITH MAINTENANCE MOVING DELAYS

We’re in for a wet spring and summer with our region predicted to see a significant increase in rainfall. Increased rainfall and warmer soil conditions make for favourable grass growing conditions. Council has increased its mowing roster to stay ahead of the growth. However, often many sites are too wet for heavy mowers to access without doing considerable damage.

COOLUM PROJECTS

The Coolum Sports Precinct exit road widening, the beach stair replacement and an irrigation project in Tickle Park are all currently underway. Please take care near the work.

GET READY

Spring is also a good time to make sure you have your Get Ready plan in place for this summer storm season as we are being told that it’s not if, but when. There are a few simple steps you can take to help safeguard your family and home. Check flood mapping and other information at disasterhub.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Prepare a household emergency plan – tips are at www.getready.qld.gov.au/plan. Pack an emergency kit in a strong waterproof storage container.

MOTION FOR BETTER HOUSING DESIGN

Our motion to lobby the State Government to make changes to the Queensland Development Code and National Construction Code to provide for more locally sustainable design measures to be incorporated in planning schemes or amending codes to include mandatory requirements. The aim is to ensure the creation of liveable homes that are suited to local climates. SERVICE REQUEST PROCESS

DAWN AWAKENING RESCHEDULED

Dawn Awakening, an uplifting multi-arts celebration of remembrance, dreaming and ritual, has been rescheduled to Sunday October 30. The free event will be held at Coolum’s Stumers Creek from 4.30am. It’s worth the early morning but registrations essential at www.horizonfestival.com.au/ event/dawn-awakening. CALLING ALL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Minor Grants of up to $2000 are available for community groups to deliver projects, events and activities that provide community benefit via Council’s Community Grants Program. The current round closes on Monday, October 31. Visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to apply today. 20

TASTY TREATS FOR EDUCATORS STATE EDUCATION WEEK

Hats off to all our educators! As part of State Education Week last month, I teamed up with Coolum business, the German Bakehouse, to deliver some fresh treats to all our local schools, in recognition of the efforts of all our teachers and staff. This year’s theme, ‘Realising the potential of every student’, serves as a reminder that success can take many forms, and it is thanks to the impressive efforts of our local educators that we are always hearing good news stories about students’ achievements locally.

To get in the draw, contact your local P&C. This is just another way I am able to help our local P&Cs raise money for important school resources. Participating schools include Coolum State School, Coolum State High, Peregian Springs State School and Coolum Beach Christian College.

DV SAFE PHONE

My office is now a collection point for your old mobile phones (in working order). I’ve teamed up with DV Safe Phone, which repurposes old phones in good working order and gifts them to victims of domestic violence. To learn more about this fantastic initiative, visit www. dvsafephone.org.

Happy Birthday to Coolum Mens Shed, who last month celebrated their 10th anniversary. The Shedders provide so much support to other groups in our community, and it was fitting they were able to showcase some of the many activities that keep them busy at their Research St home. STAY IN TOUCH

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SELL? Reading the economic climate and knowing when the best time to sell is the number one question on everyone's minds. "Do we sell this summer, or do we wait and sell in the coming year? Will interest rates keep rising? Will the market dip further?" The very best time to sell your home is when a sale has just happened in your street or local area, at today's premium prices. There has been a large number of sales happening with Richardson and Wrench this month with great prices being achieved for our sellers. More qualified buyers are active and ready to buy your home during this time. We encourage you to chat with us today to discuss how we can help you benefit from the recent results and current buyer demand.

“ABSOLUTE DEDICATION”

Jodie and the team at Amber Werchon were faultless in their commitment to help sell my property. From start to finish the foot never came off the pedal and I received help and guidance at every stage of the selling process. You always feel like your property is Jodie’s highest priority and she’s devoting her time to you only...absolute dedication. The communication was exceptional. I’m so very grateful and really can’t say enough with regards to their professionalism and friendship and wouldn’t buy/sell a property with anybody else! Thank you, Greg, Peregian Springs.
