They’re back! The massive display of Christmas lights are up at Bellbird Place in Peregian Springs with the family once again fundraising for IFYS and Inclusive Kids.

Christmas lights up the streets Ever wondered what it would be like to sequence your Christmas lights to music and make it look like there’s a singing penguin on your front door? Well, local resident Michael Young did, and he’s turned his front yard, at 10 Gracemere Boulevarde, into and interactive concert where viewers are able to tune their radios to 107.5FM and watch the lights dance to music in their ears. He’s even created a facebook page for them @younglightsau where you can watch a video of one song playing to get the idea. Ryan Kirkham and his family at Bellbird Place must be close to

running out of room for lights. Their massive annual display is known across the Coast and raises money every year for great causes. This year it is IFYS and Inclusive Kids. Other Peregian Springs streets with lights up already that are well worth a look include The Avenue, Dornoch Way, Majella Close, Augusta Circuit and Sandhurst Crescent. Peregian Breeze residents have a glow about them too and a slow drive through the suburb is rewarded with the twinkle of hundreds of lights. If you have a lights display to share, feel free to add it our Peregian Springs News’ Facebook page post.

From the Ed’s desk: Last Column for 2020. So much has happened this year, both in the community and I’m sure for all of you in many ways in your own lives. With COVID reminding us how much being free to move and meet face-to-face is so important - it has been a year of harsh realities in some ways but gentle reminders in others. As we enter a more open phase of restrictions – borders opening, families finally being able to be together, I hope we can remember some lessons from this year to take forward. Being close to support networks is highlighted as important- so working local means we should support local to retain connection in uncertain times. Agriculture in country Queensland might be calling for fruit pickers - but why move from your local support networks? Start an enterprise here or seek out local enterprises to work for. Geoff and I have expanded our media business this year to

But the support and welcome we’ve received for these new publications and the solid support for this publication has blown us away. We’re so humbled for your trust to bring you the information each month. Thanks to all the people who contribute to this magazine - my columnists and contributors as well as our wonderful local advertisers who support this magazine and local news. To our printers in Maroochydore (Nick and Paul) and local deliverers Brad and Jeremy. You all build community month by month like a home, brick-by-brick. I thank each and every one of you for the solid community that you’re all helping build and looking forward to seeing you all in 2021 to bring more local news and happenings. Until then, wishing you a peaceful festive season.. Rebecca

Finding the Christmas spirit Outdoor carols events may be on ice this year, but that doesn’t mean there’s no action at all. Sunshine Coast Regional Council will host a Sunshine Coast Community Carols event via its website on Saturday, December 19 from 6.30pm which could be worth a watch. For those who would normally attend a church service, check with your parish for their COVID-safe plans as numbers are still restricted. At least two local churches, Holy Spirit Anglican Church Coolum and St Peter’s Catholic at Coolum require attendees to book a spot online to

make sure the numbers are okay. Holy Spirit will hold its Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services at Coolum Civic Centre. See www.eventbrite. com.au to book, and for St Peter’s see www.saintsonwaves.com.au. If you’re looking to support others in the community who may be struggling via donations of money or gifts, a few ideas include: Aussie Helpers, which provides gift hampers to Aussie farming families doing it tough (www.aussiehelpers.com.au); The Smith Family Toy and Book Appeal (www.thesmithfamily.com.au/ sharechristmas or 1800 024 069); or YouTurn Youth Support which works with homeless youth on the Coast. White Tigress backs local kids When COVID forced Christine Lynn, pictured right with black hair, to reassess the next step in her career, it led her to go into business herself and open an Op Shop in support of victims of domestic violence. From a first business meeting with two friends in her garage White Tigress and co was born and Christine decided to apply her 25 years of experience in retail management to building a new business with proceeds going to help support local families in need. The team set about collecting donations from the local area, including drop off points at Coles Peregian Springs and outside The Pool Café at Peregian Springs – and the search began for a retail space to

In terms of donations, White Tigress and co is able to store and sell all good quality clothing, jewellery, accessories, bags, toys, books, bric and brac, linen, towels, home décor and artwork. New career comes with a buzz As the school gates swing shut on another round of Year 12 graduates Peregian Springs residents Claudia Parry and Cooper Ellis, both 20) have some words of wisdom for school leavers wondering what to do. The former Sydney-siders left school intending to work this year sailing yachts to their new owners from Sydney using Cooper’s skills as a professional yachtsman. COVID-19 hit and the industry shut down. The duo went hunting for a new business and landed on bees specifically the collecting of natural honey using “flow” hives that remove the need for expensive processing plant and equipment. What started as one hive, has now grown to 60 with a move to the

Dancers Chloe M, Ayla D, Ivy Costanzo and Gemma J, from the Studio 4 Dance business in Peregian, will perform in the Christmas in Storyland Pantomime at South Bank in Brisbane on December 11, 12 and 13.

The Christmas dance begins The Christmas trees are up, the Christmas lights are starting to appear on the local houses and school’s about to finish for thousands of local kids. For many, that means summer holidays are on the way. For four young Peregian dancers and local students, it means a chance to shine in the big smoke as members of the cast of the Christmas in Storyland pantomime in Brisbane - a Christmas tradition making a comeback to the big stage at South Bank after a 20-year break. Studio 4 Dance owner Karla Costanzo, who performed in the pantomime herself in the 80s and 90s, said the four girls, her daughter Ivy, and her friends Chloe M, Ayla D and Gemma J were in for a fun time. “Performing in Christmas in Storyland was such a highlight of my childhood 14

and I’m so thrilled my daughter and her friends will have the same wonderful experience I did,” she said. The dancers have been busy rehearsing at their “pop-up” dance studio at GF Fitness Studio in Peregian Breeze. Karla said Studio 4 Dance had only been open for a short time, and had grown organically from a group of friends who wanted to dance together in a fun, feel-good environment. Calling on friends from her own time as a dancer Karla has been able to offer classes in commercial jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, breakdance and musical theatre and says there will be range of holiday classes and workshops on offer in the new year. To find out more about those, see @Studio4Dance.Peregian on Facebook. For Storyland tickets see www.trybooking.com.

New Business Profile - Change Exchange

Containers for cash at Coolum There’s a new way to cash in your cans and bottles for coins and its coming to Coolum from December 7. Change Exchange co-owner Tim Riches said his business used technology to allow customers the opportunity of having their bottles counted automatically and payments made in cash on the spot. Tim said this was their second Change Exchange operation on the Coast, with the other at Beerwah having been open for some months and proving popular with locals there. “It’s a great opportunity for individuals, but also schools and charities to be able to turn their

fundraising efforts into cash in a timely manner,” Mr Riches said. The containers refund point at 53 Lysaght St, Coolum, is part of the Containers for Change scheme (www.containersforchange.com.au or phone 13 42 42) which allows for the recycling of eligible containers for a 10 cent refund per container. Federal Member Ted O’Brien

STATE ELECTION Firstly I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dan Purdie on being re-elected as the State Member for Ninderry. Dan has been a great advocate in Parliament for the local community, he is always out and about meeting with small businesses and different community groups, visiting schools and fighting for funding. I look forward to continuing working with him. SPORTING CHAMP A big shout out to Peregian Springs’ up and coming basketball star Scarlett Wedd. Scarlett was successful in securing a grant in the latest round of the Local Sporting Champions awards for competing in the Under 14 State Championships with the Sunshine Coast Phoenix Basketball Assoc. I’d certainly encourage any eligible young sports person to apply for a Local Sporting Champions grant. The program provides grants of between $500 and $750 for competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national or international championships. Ninderry Update: State Member Dan Purdie THANK YOU

Firstly, I would like to thank the Peregian Springs community for your support at the election. I am proud and honoured to be returned as the Member for Ninderry. I will continue to work hard every single day to fight for our fair share, represent your interests and hold the Government to account. WHAT’S NEXT During the campaign, I welcomed Labor’s commitment to a number of the projects I have been lobbying the State Government for the past three years, and one of my first priorities will be to hold them to account, to ensure they deliver on their election commitments. This includes long-overdue funding for major road infrastructure projects such as the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway, the upgrade of the Yandina Coolum Road interchange, and the intersection of Yandina Coolum Road and School Road. Locals will know I have been working with Coolum State School, Council and TMR to address the safety and parking issues at the school, so I am delighted to see the Labor

22

Government finally respond to our calls to upgrade the intersection, even if it is three years overdue. I have asked the Transport and Main Roads Minister to provide further details about these projects, including how much of the total cost will be included in this year’s State Budget, which will be brought down in early December. MERRY CHRISTMAS On a brighter note, as we start the countdown to Christmas, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe festive season. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, and as we emerge from the COVID health crisis, I hope the new year brings with it some long overdue confidence that 2021 will be a better year. GET IN TOUCH If you’d like to get in touch, phone 5406 7900, drop by the office at 11 Heathfield Rd, or send an email to ninderry@parliament.qld.gov.au. Find us online at www.danpurdie.com.au.

Chappy’s Corner with Mark Horsfall

It’s time to do the little things Christmas is upon us as we approach the end of what has been an extraordinary year. I am sure that all of us will be remembering 2020 as a year like no other. This time of year is also likely to be a challenging time for many as they deal with the fall out from Covid. Financial challenges, not being able to travel to be with family, a lack of festivities etc have the potential to diminish the joy that normally comes this time of year. With great challenge though, comes great opportunity for us to embrace the real Christmas spirit and express it in our Community. A spirit that prides itself on generosity, kindness and love towards others. I recently read a story of a man who went into a major retail outlet and paid for all of the outstanding laybys in the store. This gentleman paid over $30,000 off what was owed in laybys. Can you imagine going in to pay for your child’s Christmas presents only to find they had been paid for. What an incredible act of generosity and kindness that was shown by this

person. We may not be able to do something big like that but we can all do something that shows generosity and kindness to people in our community. Mother Teresa wrote, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” I encourage you over this next month to take time to consider what you can do to show the true spirit of Christmas this month. There will be someone you know who is having Christmas on their own, a family that is struggling with their finances, a child who won’t be getting a present for Christmas, a charity that you could donate to that could benefit from a display of Christmas Spirit. I know I am certainly going to be on the look out for how I can bring joy to others this Christmas. All the best for the rest of the year, and I hope you enjoy the Christmas break doing small things with great love for one another! Mark Horsfall - Chaplain Coolum State High School

Take steps to be bushfire ready in 2020 As the weather warms up and the hot winds start to blow its timely to remember to have a bushfire plan. The Rural Fire Service lists key preparation steps around the house including: clear gutters, enclose open areas under decks and floors, pointing LPG relief valves away from homes 26

and sealing gaps in roof and wall cladding. Also reduce vegetation near the structure. The website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au offers a range of tools and checklists for residents that can assist in building a bushfire checklist and understanding how to Prepare, Act, and Survive.
