INSIDE..

Powering into 2021 As the first days of January dawn there are plenty of things to look forward to locally this year. For local students at Coolum State High School and Peregian Springs State School new classrooms and school facilities will come online after a year of construction in 2020. For residents in Peregian Springs it’s likely the last of the land sales in the estate will occur by midyear, marking the end of a project launched more than two decades ago. The next steps on a few of the major land parcels yet to be developed, such as the hill top at Pavillions

and the vacant blocks near Coles at Koel Circuit are likely to happen too, with a public consultation period to watch out for at Koel Circuit at least. With houses selling in a matter of days and weeks right now, real estate is going to be a hot topic in 2021. On the retail front, the opening of the juice bar at the front of Coles will add another element to the shopping centre offering and see the centre at capacity in terms of tenancy. There’s plenty to look out for and we’ll be doing all we can to keep you up to date. Happy New Year.

From the Ed’s desk: Welcome to 2021! I do love New Year time. New beginnings and a fresh start drawing on another year of experience (and what an um… experience last year was!). I feel after the adrenaline of last year this is the month to embrace a change of pace and get acquainted with what you’d like to see more of in yourself, your family and your community. It might be getting out to one of our parks with the kids or the grandkids more often, or joining new clubs, going to a church service, or just catching up with people you’ve lost touch with after all the social distancing and isolation. I, for one, am looking forward to spending more time in the community and there’ll be a lot of things to follow this year, local as well as state and national with local consequences. Locally the Pavillions Hill Top land updates, the Koel Circuit and community

village land use updates and the implications of having the final stages of the development in Ridges completed. At a State level, many might be interested in the Voluntary Assisted Dying laws that are to be debated. Nationally, changes to workplace laws are on the agenda and there will be plenty of interest in how these may affect individual pay and conditions, especially for casual workers. Keep reading our local politicians columns, our stories and columnists as we start the new year strong to bring you more local news with our three local publications, Coolum News, Eastern Beaches News and Peregian Springs News under our own independent company Your Community Media (See the website at www.yourcommunitymedia.com.au). Peregian Springs News is your publication, created specifically for residents of Peregian Breeze and Peregian Springs and we’d love to hear your stories. Until next month. Rebecca

Bike path planning is on track Spanning two council areas and in breaching a space overseen by the State Government, planning a bike path from Peregian Springs to Peregian Breeze and Peregian Beach was never going to be easy. For local residents’ group Peregian Family and Friends (PFAF) this key project has been on the agenda since 2018. Five potential paths had been created from workshops on the topic, and most recently, after meeting with the Noosa branch of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) that list has been narrowed to the two most acceptable options from the environmental perspective. PFAF’s most recent newsletter states the next step is to have the paths included in the Transport and

Main Roads South-East Queensland Principal Cycle Plan in 2021. It says: “The Project Team is working to gain support from both councils to enable the best option (s) to be seriously considered by TMR for cycle plan inclusion. This is a vital and mandatory step towards the next phase of achieving our bike path objective.” PFAF have also announced monthly general meetings to be held on the second Sunday of the month at 1pm at Peregian Surf Club. All welcome.

Beat boredom with a new park When it comes to holidays at home it’s pretty much inevitable the “I’m bored” chant will appear at least a few times as the weeks roll by. For those looking after younger children in particular, the chances of being hit with the boredom call are pretty high. With that in mind we took to the streets to find 9 parks within easy

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but hopefully it will provide some inspiration and a break from the norm.

Local Author - Sarah Tegerdine

The fires of 2019, nature, trees and mysticism all played a part in the creation of Sarah Tegerdine’s short story The Tree Whisperer which features in the Tell ‘Em They’re Dreaming anthology released in December. Sarah, said while she started writing stories for children after her first daughter was born, it was a 2015 workshop organised through Sunshine Coast Libraries with author Aleesah Darlison that set her more firmly on her path. Prior to having children Sarah had worked mostly in corporate travel. After moving to the Sunshine Coast after her husband picked up work here, Sarah worked for just over 12 months at The Bookhouse in Noosa before stopping to have her second child in 2019. Now she’s finding a new normal. “As a mum of two little ones under 5, my daylight hours tend to be very busy with them,” Sarah said. “However, when all is quiet and the kids are sleeping, I sling off somewhere comfy and allow my head to download whatever comes to mind. “I read as much as possible, research ideas, I think a lot and think some more, I search for competitions that appeal or challenge me. “I have a fantastic husband so whenever I’m in the zone of getting something down I can just get on with it.” Now settled at Peregian Breeze, Sarah said she was proud to have a story in the Tell ‘Em They’re Dreaming - Bedtime Ballads and Tall Tales from the Australian Bush publication which had been created by author Michelle Worthington as a way of helping other 10

authors to be published and to fundraise for the NSW Rural Fire Service. The book is available at Annie’s Books, Sandy Pages Noosa and online at Angus & Robertson, Amazon and Booktopia. As for what’s next, Sarah said she was looking forward to a “lot more writing and submitting”. She has another short story, science fiction, on the way to be published in 2021 in a science fiction anthology for adult readers - but intends to focus mainly on writing for children’s picture books, junior fiction and young adults. Community grants up for grabs If you’re involved in a local charity or not-for-profit group that could use some extra funding to help to deliver critical support to our communities, then the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation’s 2021 grant round could be just right for you. Since it was founded in 1997, with the help of Sunshine Coast philanthropist and humanitarian Sir Clem Renouf, former Queensland Premier Mike Ahern AO and Bill Taylor of Big Pineapple fame, the SCCF has helped local charities with grants totalling $303,000. This year the SCCF is offering four grants, of between $8000 to $10,000 each, to help Sunshine Coast groups deliver projects that support the most vulnerable members of our community. Previous projects to receive funding include providing school supplies for children affected by domestic violence, wheelchair access for a social enterprise nursery, a hospice CCTV system, and the purchase of a double horse float for an animal-assisted therapy program for people with a disability. SCCF chair Dr Caroline Osbourne said the next round of grants are particularly important given the tough we have all had. “2020 has been an incredibly hard year for families and communities on the Sunshine Coast, which is why the 2019 Sunshine Coast Community Foundation Grants have never been more important,” Caroline said. “This year, we are excited to announce that we have increased the dollar value of our grants.” 14

Coolum HeARTS have accessed SCCF grants before.

“We want to hear from charities and community organisations that have an amazing project or idea to assist local people and communities and are looking for funding. “We will grant between $8,000 $10,000 each for up to four projects that can demonstrate impact for our community.” The Sunshine Coast Community Foundation is part of the Queensland Community Foundation which manages an annual regional grants program that has distributed more than $30 million dollars in grants throughout Queensland since its inception in 1997. All donations to the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation are pooled and invested, with the income from the fund granted only to charities operating on the Sunshine Coast. To apply for a grant or to find out how to help build the capacity of the SCCF and ‘give where you live’ contact QCF on 3360 3854, or visit the website at www.qcf.org.au or email enquiries@qcf.org.au. A few tips on how to spot a rip If the waves are rolling in at the beach this summer and you spot an area of calmer water between them, don’t be fooled into diving in. As the beaches fill with family, friends and locals who are not frequent users it’s timely to talk about “rips” which are one of the most common causes of swimmers getting into trouble on our open ocean beaches. A rip current is created when water from the waves crashing towards the shore returns to the ocean by the path of least resistance - creating a tunnel or funnel of fast flowing water heading back out behind the breaking waves. They can be spotted by deeper, darker, water, fewer breaking waves, sandy coloured water extending beyond the surf zone, debris or seaweed and significant water movement (see diagrams). The easiest way to avoid getting

caught in a rip is to make the most of the experts and swim between the flags where lifesavers will be constantly monitoring for rips and danger to swimmers. If you do find yourself in a rip, Surf Lifesaving Queensland advice is to either swim out of it, by swimming left or right, parallel to the beach, or to float and raise your arm to attract attention, letting the rip take you out and conserving your energy. Once the rip weakens, swim parallel and then use the waves to help you swim in. For more beach safety tips see Safety Info at www.lifesaving.com.au

Local profile - Adam Hungerford

Hair raising way to earn a quid At the start of 2020, Adam Hungerford’s Regrow Hair product was stocked in 100 shops. Fast forward to December 2020 and it’s now stocked in 250 locations across Australia, with more coming on board every day. The Peregian Springs local and CEO of the family-owned Regrow Hair business, pictured right, said he would never have guessed the business would continue to grow in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. After 12 years as an international hair consultant with a high profile hair loss company Adam decided last year the time was right to go out on his own. The business has created a range of shampoos, conditioners and hair tonic to encourage hair growth and slow, or halt hair loss. He said they also assist in the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. “We had been experiencing a strong level of business growth in the lead-up to the pandemic with increasing interest from stockists and distributors,” Adam said. “While we would have been satisfied with that growth, the change in the market, including the limited availability of international brands and a growing need for eco and bodyfriendly products presented us with a real opportunity. “When lock down was lifted in Queensland, we seized the moment and started conducting sales calls the old-fashioned way, by door knocking stockists. It achieved incredible results. “As soon as the South Australian border opened, we adopted the same 22

approach, literally knocking on the doors of the retail owners, CEOs and business boards.” The range is now stocked in every Australian state except for the Northern Territory at locations including select IGAs, Go Vita, Alive Pharmacy Warehouse and Chemist Works. For Adam, the marketing of the product is all about the message of prevention rather than cure and the products are designed to promote good hair health and protect hair before it falls out. He said two main causes of hair loss were poor blood circulation in the hair follicles and the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which shrinks the hair follicle. Once dead, hair follicles will not grow back. The Regrow Hair products include 13 natural active ingredients including caffeine and fruit from the Saw Palmetto tree which are proven DHTblockers. They also have the vitamins biotin and niacin which improve blood flow to the scalp. Adam said they were planning to launch a range of beauty products in 2021 and to export to New Zealand and South Africa too.

Boomerang bags bringing joy By Fiona Ewington As we bring in the new year with joy and a new Covid vaccine, sustainability is back on the forefront of our minds for 2021, and Boomerang Bags Noosa, who make beautiful holdalls out of donated materials will be busier than ever. Run by volunteers working from Wallace House, Noosaville, a group of highly skilled women meet on Mondays and Wednesdays to transform unwanted fabrics, including sheets and duvet covers into sophisticated shopping bags. “Well you can use the bags for anything” says coordinator Sandra Acheson. “But the organisation was started up to stop consumers using disposable plastic shopping bags”. Beautifully hand-crafted bags with various environmental messages and logos all including “Noosa” are ideal gift souvenirs for international and domestic tourists. These hand sewn bags are also acknowledged by local companies, including Noosa Tri event organisers, Ironman, who donate their used signage banners to be transformed into bags which they buy back for use at their next events. “It’s recycling at its best,” states Sandra. With laughter, banter, homemade cakes and all up fun, the Boomerang Bag ladies, dedicate hours of their own time to sew bags and enjoy each other’s company. “We’re not as agile as we’d like to be” says Vivienne who is struggling 24

with a sore hip, “and contributing by sewing is a good way to help, because I can sit down while using the machine” she continues. The Boomerang Bags initiative started in Burleigh Heads Qld and has spread fervently. It is now in over 1100 communities worldwide. Thousands of plastic bags have been saved from landfill and an environmental conscious has gained traction. With some profits made from selling their bags, Boomerang Bags Noosa recently donated to Ocean Crusaders, a charity organisation specialising in waterway cleaning, including our own Noosa River, to purchase a new portable beach and bank vacuum cleaner. Boomerang Bags Noosa is always on the lookout for donated fabrics. The magic of the process comes alive when visiting a local shop you find your old tablecloth transformed into a sophisticated holdall.
