SIX-STAR SYNERGY
A
CELEBRATION of luxury features and finishes, the Riviera is the new flagship display from Shelford Quality Homes. An illustration of what the builder can do at the upper end of the market, this Wandi showcase is packed with features large and small. To help buyers piece together a first-class specification that perfectly suits their needs and budget, the builder has drawn up an itemised list of all the elements on display. For a little under $1million, buyers get luxury touches such as the dual-sided stone-clad fireplace in the family room, the glass and stainless steel balustrading to the staircase and galleried sitting room, the cedar-lined ceiling to the alfresco, the bifolding doors to the alfresco, and the granite step and riser to the staircase. If they’ve another $126,610 to spend, they can add in extras such as the pool, water feature, outdoor shower, carpets, light fittings and timber floors to take the price to $1,124,661. “Building the Riviera was an opportunity for Shelford to showcase its expertise and finishes at the high end,” says sales manager Mike Conlan. “In terms of the finishes in this home, we’ve gone for ‘six-star hotel’. Not only that, the design gets a 6 or 6.5-star energy rating without even trying. We really wanted that synergy between it being 6-star energy-rated and six-star luxury.” Describing the Riviera as “elegant, chic and modern”, Mike is confident the home demonstrates the builder’s design capabilities as well as its construction abilities when it comes to million-dollar homes. He also stresses that the Riviera may be a luxury residence, but Shelford is nothing if not versatile. “The Riviera shows we can build homes of $1 million and more, but we also build for first homebuyers, developers, and second and third-time buyers, and we also build on rural blocks,” he says. “We’re very pleased with the way the Riviera
HOME
has turned out. It’s really doing its job, showcasing what we can do.” Built on a 563sq m block with an 18m-wide frontage, the Riviera offers a whopping 535sq m of home. The floor plan is especially perfect for families with adult kids yet to fly the nest, because it is almost two homes in one. Downstairs there are spacious open-plan living and entertaining areas and a statement kitchen, plus a private master wing at the back of the house with doors to a courtyard and views to the pool. Upstairs there is a lounge, kitchenette and activity room that separate two double bedrooms and a bathroom on one side, and a guest bedroom and bathroom on the other. Mike says the ground-floor master suite means the home can operate perfectly well as a single-storey if the upstairs accommodation is only needed from time to time. The Riviera’s interior design and fit-out team was led by Maria Plumb, wife of Shelford director Tony Plumb, who worked with Jayde Snelling, Shelford’s in-house interior designer, and Fig Tree Interior Design. Mike says their theme for the master suite was “French boudoir”, with rich fabrics and elegant furniture. There’s a recess ideal for a built-in dressing table, a generous dressing room and a striking ensuite with a round spa bath set in a mosaictiled hob. In the dining room, a double height void delivers a wow-factor space that feels just as comfortable for everyday family meals as it would for an elegant supper. The kitchen in the display home is creamy smooth, with Laminex Crystal Gloss cabinets and a Laminex Metaline splashback, plus an appliance cupboard, wide cooktop, double oven and Essa Stone benchtops. In the scullery, Shelford has neatly incorporated the space under the stairs to provide a fabulous storage and prep area with open shelves, a wine rack under the slope of the stairs and plenty of extra benchtop.
Mike says the attention to detail and finish in the Riviera has been carried right throughout the house. “We haven’t done something in one area and then downgraded it in another,” he says. Paula Evans

expert ADVICE
6
I
HAVE to admit, there have been times when I have thought builders would have to be among the greatest illusionists out there. If you’ve been through display villages, researched home designs and read up on builders’ specifications, you may understand what I’m talking about. It can be, at times, a daunting and frustrating process. This builder includes this; this one doesn’t. This is only included in this model, but not this one – unless you upgrade to this, which, of course, means you get that. What a nightmare! One thing I will say though – choosing a builder and a home design is definitely getting easier as builders recognise the need for transparency in making the process as easy to understand and follow as possible. For those starting out, here are some questions to ask, which I think can put you in good stead in determining what is the right home, package or upgrade and, of course, the right builder for you. Firstly, when walking through a display home, be sure to ask what the price of the home “as displayed” is. This displayed price will usually exclude items such as landscaping and furniture, but definitely seek some clarity because sometimes the difference between the price of the home “as displayed” and “as standard” can vary a fair bit. Benchtops, tiling, appliances and ceiling heights are the common upgrades in a display home and may not be a big concern for you.
HOME
Secondly, think about what you want in a home. I’ve met people who are avid chefs, where the appliances in their home are a top priority and therefore a necessary upgrade. I’ve also met people who are happy with the standard items, but really want higher ceilings so their priority is to increase these and worry about upgrading items such as appliances later. Think about what your must-haves are, and what you can possibly afford to change later. Some items are easier to change than others. Increasing the ceiling height and adding extra courses of brickwork is a lot harder than changing your oven in five years time. Speaking to a builder and being able to convey what your must-haves are will help the builder to quote you a more accurate price for the home you want. Many builders operate with a display specification and a standard specification, with some even offering more levels of specification than this. Don’t feel pressured to choose one or the other. For example, if a display specification offers good value, yet you’re only interested in upgrading your benchtops and tiling but not your appliances, don’t be afraid to ask for a credit on the items you don’t wish to upgrade. In my experience it’s often easier to start with a standard specification and upgrade items rather than start with a display specification and ask for credits. Finally, remember that what you put in to
your building project will reflect what you get out of it. The clients I see who do their research, ask questions, read their paperwork and clarify the details are the ones who get the best value, are the least stressed and feel the most satisfaction because they know exactly what they are getting into. Before you sign a contract you’ll be given plenty of opportunity to clarify items, but be sure to put the effort in. Building a home is a significant investment so it’s important that you commit knowing exactly what you want. It will always be a builder’s priority to keep the customer happy, but how involved you are will play a big part in how much you enjoy the building process.

Don’t be afraid to question builders about exactly what you are getting for your money, says The Rural Building Company general manager Jay Walter

OPEN TO FLEXIBILITY
T
HE Quantum by Domain Homes offers a flexible floor plan that buyers can really make their own. There are areas for family time, kids’ activities and parents’ quiet time, plus a list of optional add-on features for those who want the extra finishing touches, such as Essa Stone benchtops and high ceilings in the living and dining area. “Families will really appreciate the fact there is a kids’ zone with an activity room that means kids and parents are not fighting over the same spaces,” says Jeremy Muir, group sales manager at Plunkett Homes. “It’s a flexible plan to suit everybody, plus it will fit on a 15m-wide block, making it great for many of the standard lots available today.” Jeremy says the Quantum reflects Domain’s commitment to value-for-money designs for families, as well as investors and downsizers. “Both the price and the size of this home will appeal to a wide range of buyers,” he says. A timeless facade ensures the Quantum has

strong street appeal, which the home builder is confident will add to resale value down the track. “We have gone for a timeless look for the front elevation, bringing together rendered walls, contrasting bands and attractive mouldings,” Jeremy says. At the core of the design is an open-plan kitchen and living area that spills to an alfresco. “The interaction between the indoors and the outdoors in this home is especially good,” Jeremy says. Placing the contemporary kitchen in the centre of the house means it relates well to all areas, while the integrated breakfast bar acts as a natural gathering point for family and friends. There is a pantry and overhead cupboards, plus stainless steel appliances with plenty of elbow room either side of the cooktop. An artwork niche at one end of the kitchen not only adds to the decor and detail of the Quantum, but it also keeps this all-important
family area private when the front door is open. To the front of the house is a good-sized study that will be welcomed by the work-at-home brigade or anyone who wants a quiet space for study or reading. Tucked behind the study is the master suite with its walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite featuring a tall window that helps bring the gardens in for a touch of resort-inspired styling. Younger members of the family have their own wing, which includes an activity room for study, video games or simply hanging out with friends. Just off the living room, the activity room would also make a great play space for littlies. In the front half of the house, just off the entry hallway, is a home theatre for relaxing away from the family areas or bedrooms. “The Quantum is a great example of how you can get a large home on to a 15m-wide block,” Jeremy says. Dale Alcock Homes has positioned an e-zone next to the kitchen to cater to the demands of homebuyers who want a place to use a laptop in the hub of the home
K
ITCHENS keep evolving to encompass the most recent developments in technology and accommodate a plethora of time-saving cooking devices, but one thing that hasn’t changed over the decades is that they remain the hub – and the heart – of the home. And with this in mind, one of the latest design trends to gain popularity is the use of what has been termed the “e-zone”. Cameron Lade, sales and marketing manager at Dale Alcock Homes, says his company regularly integrates these spaces into clients’ kitchens so that they have a dedicated place to use a laptop or tablet. “Our customers remain focused on creating

aesthetically appealing kitchens which are central to family life, but at the same time they’re cognisant of the fact that the kitchen is a high-traffic area which is a hive of activity throughout the day,” Cameron says. “Creating a specific area next to the kitchen in which to position a laptop creates a perfect place for any member of the family to jump online to pay those bills, check out the latest MasterChef recipe, catch up with friends on Facebook or plan a meal. “It’s certainly a noticeable new addition to the extended kitchen area and many clients are interested in this feature and have been keen to check out our display homes, the Archer at Bletchley Park in Southern River and the Kayana at Trinity Estate in Alkimos, which both feature a good example of how this trend can be incorporated into new home designs.” Cameron says kitchen design has been a major focus for Dale Alcock Homes over the past two decades, not only in terms of their aesthetic appeal as the centrepiece of openplan living areas, but also with a focus on creating exceedingly functional designs. e-zone as a sixth component to its current suite of five designated kitchen areas, which includes storage for consumables and nonconsumables, together with preparation, cooking and cleaning areas. “Attention to motion, in other words workflow in the kitchen, in addition to ergonomics and clever storage, all play a part when we confer with our designers to deliver the best outcome for the style of home we are trying to achieve,” Cameron says. “We know that most family members use a laptop or tablet on the kitchen bench or table anyway, but a specific e-zone can provide a designated spot for easy access and keeps everything nice and tidy at the same time. “The other great benefit of the e-zone trend is that it enables all members of the family to use their iPad or laptop while remaining in the kitchen area, as opposed to being tucked away in a study or bedroom. “It’s also a good way for parents to supervise their kids’ internet time, while enabling them to continue to interact with other family members and remain involved with everything going on in the hub of the home.”

FAMILY VALUES
T
HE owners of this luxury home in Floreat combined their own ideas with RiverStone’s design and construction savvy to create a home tailor-made for six. Home to Jodi and Andy Clayton and their boys Ben, 10, Daniel, 8, Tom, 6, and Jack, 4, it’s a six-bedroom, three-bathroom one-off residence that will suit the family just as well tomorrow as it does today. “I really had to imagine four teenage boys and ask myself what the best scenario would be,” Jodi says. “We definitely wanted a family-friendly house that was also great for entertaining.” With strong ideas about what they needed and how they wanted their dream home to look, the couple worked closely with RiverStone on a two-storey design that puts all four boys’ bedrooms upstairs along with a kids’ lounge, a guest bedroom and two bathrooms. “I could visualise from the plan what the house was going to be like and I just knew it was going to be very workable for us,” Jodi says. She and Andy didn’t have too far to go when they moved into their new house as it was literally next door to their old place.
study but the homework room is exactly what we did need,” Jodi says. Hidden from view but still very much part of the everyday living area, this innovative little room has been kitted out with desk space for several computers, plus individual storage cubes for school bags. A felt-covered pin board runs behind the desk and there is a stationery cupboard and storage for household paperwork. Throughout the house, the decor has been kept muted and natural, with quality materials chosen to last. Jodi says she knew she wanted an all-white kitchen, travertine floors and white walls and she welcomed input from RiverStone’s in-house interior designer Emily LeCras. Emily suggested adding charcoal, silvery greys, beiges and warm whites to make sure the overall look remained warm and friendly. There’s also a music room that doubles as a second sitting room on the first floor, plus Jodi and Andy’s swish bedroom suite where the ensuite bathroom has underfloor heating and heated towel rails, floor-to-ceiling travertine wall tiles, an oval bath and mirrored wall cabinets. In fact, the plans for the family’s “forever home” had originally been drawn up by RiverStone as a demolish-and-build project when Jodi and Andy thought their only option was to stay put and knock down their old house. “We loved the street but we didn’t actually like the thought of knocking down our beautiful old Floreat home just because it wasn’t big enough,” Jodi says. When Jodi got word that the block next door might come on the market she quickly contacted the owners and a deal was done. Luckily the sloping block was much the same size and shape as the site their old house stood on and their original plans transferred across with just a few minor adjustments. Downstairs there is a large kitchen and openplan living space with views to the pool and bifolding doors to a sheltered alfresco. Jodi says she loves the fact that the dining room and living room open out and she can see the boys kicking the footy in the backyard when she’s in the kitchen. Maybe not so popular with the youngsters, but a hit with the parents, is the “homework room” RiverStone created just off the kitchen. “We’re not a family that needed a big formal

master BUILDERS
GAVAN FORSTER
Builders, like a lot of other professional and sporting people, love to win awards and take great pride in their achievements, says Master Builders director Michael McLean
Gavan Forster from Master Builders answers readers’ questions about home building issues.
T
Q
a contract to build a new home, but even more pleasure in seeing the finished product and the joy it provides to the client. Positive feedback from clients and referrals are always appreciated, but so is acknowledgement from your peers. For builders, winning an industry award such as a Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Award is like winning a premiership. The umpires are an independent judging panel of builders who know how to differentiate between good, better and best. Master Builder awards are special because they only focus on workmanship – the traditional skills of the master builder. This takes into account things such as brickwork or render, cabinets, wall and floor tiling, plastering, carpentry and painting. It is a challenging job for the judging panel because builders only submit their best homes
for this rigorous level of scrutiny. To win an award in this context is an achievement in itself and something worth celebrating for a long time. These awards only go to the best entries and through marketing mediums such as The Sunday Times HOME magazine they effectively benchmark the whole industry. It is a credit to those builders and their teams who consistently win industry awards. It is also a credit to those up-and-coming young builders who win an award against more seasoned veterans. The real winners, of course, are homebuyers because each year builders continue to strive for something extra, something special, just to win an award. To all those builders who won a Master Builders award this year, we say congratulations! Well done to your team of champions.
Renovate or detonate? This is the question you’ll be faced with if you are in an old home and need more space for a growing family, says Master Builders technical adviser Romina De Santis
D
Aside from the obvious restrictions such as heritage issues and budget, other factors that should weigh in on the decision process include: CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOME Depending on the age of your existing home, there are likely to be a number of items that look dated or need some maintenance. Arrange for a suitably qualified person to check out the quality of structural components that might not be immediately obvious – such as the ceilings, the roof frame, limestone footings and sub-floor
(if you have timber floors) so these costs can be factored in.
POSITION ON THE LOT Older homes were often set back further from the street and in the middle of the block, thus not maximising the potential of the site for development (i.e. possible second dwelling on the site), or making better use of spaces for recreation. Can an addition overcome these inefficiencies or would demolishing the existing dwelling help you maximise the property’s potential?
MATERIALS USED Some of your home’s original materials may no longer be used and will have been replaced by more durable or safer alternatives – for example, asbestos and glazing. Current building standards require much higher levels of safety for glazing installed in buildings. If renovating an older home, include the replacement of full-height glazing in all of your living areas, as well as replacing all glass installations in your bathrooms, so they meet the current requirements.
LIVING WITH THE BUILDERS Can you stay at home while the renovations take place? With the cost of moving and rents chewing up funds that can be spent on the renovation, being creative with your design and the staging of the construction can make it possible to stay at home for the majority of, if not all of, the construction and renovation period.

A-Z BUILDING information
O you have an oldish home that needs updating or is your family simply outgrowing your current digs? If your property is run-down or too small but you don’t really want to move, you have one of two decisions to make: Do you renovate and extend, or demolish the existing dwelling and start from scratch?
I’m building a house during the winter months and am wondering if there are any construction issues which should concern me. The first consideration is that inclement weather could delay the project. Most building contracts entitle the builder to claim a time extension for delays due to inclement weather. In the contract there is usually a process whereby the builder must notify the client within a certain period of the delay occurring. Of course, the delays must be justified. For example, it would be unreasonable for a builder to claim a wet weather delay while internal painting or tiling was occurring on site. Also the period of time claim must be reasonable. Another issue that sometimes arises during the winter months is site access. Sometimes heavy rain can restrict access to the building lot due to boggy access roads. Before a job commences, a builder will usually assess the site and the risk of delays in the delivery of materials on site due to adverse weather conditions. Wintry conditions also provide a focus on ensuring that the house is designed to minimise energy heating costs. The importance of correct house orientation to ensure that living areas take advantage of the winter sun cannot be underestimated. Other energy efficiency elements to consider include roof and wall insulation, ensuring adequate sealing to prevent heat loss, and insulating water pipes to reduce energy costs. Our temperate climate means that WAbuilt houses do not suffer problems such as water pipes cracking due to freezing climatic conditions. As a result, the construction of your home and subsequent living in the home should be comfortable and not cause too much stress.

HE building industry is a tough field. It’s fiercely competitive and relies on teamwork to achieve results. This teamwork involves the owner, competent and experienced members of staff, specialist contractors and a diverse range of companies that supply materials to a building site. The housing industry is one of the most competitive fields in town – and has much more competitive codes than the AFL, rugby or soccer – because there are many more teams of builders competing for the premiership. Builders tend to specialise in different niche markets within the housing industry. Some specialise in creating homes for first homebuyers, others in the high volume “affordable” categories of homes, display homes, “one-off” contract/custom homes, or even exotic luxury mansions. Then there are the renovation, alterations and additions market. A new player in the field in recent times has been the transportable and prefabricated home industry. Each of these specialist areas requires different levels of expertise and skills. Regardless of the price, clients always expect value for money and the best quality from their builder, which is fair enough. Builders gain a lot of satisfaction in securing

Demolition means you can start with a clean slate. Use modern materials and methods of construction and create a more energy efficient new home. Often the reason you purchased the home in the first place was because of the “feel” of the neighbourhood , so as older homes are revamped and replaced, the streetscape changes and the character of your suburb will slowly evolve.

TASTEFUL LUXURY Meticulous attention to detail was the key factor that enabled Luxus Homes not just to complete this Nedlands residence to the owners’ satisfaction but also to be in the running for an award
T
HIS Nedlands home is the embodiment of luxury and comfort, says Luxus Homes director Russell Manger, and the home’s majestic facade is one of its strongest features because it really represents the sense of tasteful luxury that the owners were striving for. The majestic frontage features noce travertine marble cladding, beautifully complemented by the simple, yet refined landscape design. Travertine marble features throughout the property – from the stately entry to the flooring in the palatial interior – and beautifully links the two areas. Russell says this project was slightly different to most of the contemporary homes that Luxus builds. “This is much more of a classic home,” he says. High-quality materials and detailed finishes have been expertly combined to create a polished and luxurious feeling in every room in the home. Recessed ceilings with light troughs have been used to great effect. A marble fireplace makes a striking focal point in the carpeted formal lounge and dining area, which has been decorated in tones of cream and caramel. In the state-of the-art kitchen, black stone benchtops and splashbacks contrast beautifully with the timber veneer and gloss cabinets by Dario. The kitchen’s long island bench partially separates it from the entertainment area,
HOME
which also features black highlights set against soft, neutral tones. Frameless bifold doors open the entertaining and meals area to the alfresco, which has a recessed cedar ceiling. The pool, spa and water feature were all designed to look clean, simple and timeless, and make the maximum use of the 456sq m block. Russell says the seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor areas is due in part to the pool’s design.
“The footings of the house are actually built on the edge of the pool,” he says. The master suite on the second floor is another standout. Its curved bulkheads mirror the shape of the spa in the ensuite. The upper floor has an additional two bedrooms, a bathroom and a study. “The finishing side of this house was very tricky,” Russell says. “It is just so detailed.” But it’s the intricate details that achieved the elegance and comfort the owners hoped for. renovation: BEFORE & AFTER
STEPPING OUT TO PARADISE The owners love to entertain and are delighted at what landscape designer Denise Staffa has created in their backyard
W
HEN Denise Staffa, managing director and principal landscape designer of Outside In, was asked to transform a plain, tired-looking backyard into an entertainer’s paradise, she utilised almost every centimetre of space to create a stunning and immensely functional outdoor oasis. Denise says the outdated paving, worn deck and uncovered alfresco area were overhauled and replaced with a sleek, modern outdoor kitchen, lounge, daybed and a covered alfresco with a 10-seater dining table. Each item was chosen to match the newly renovated interior of the Floreat home. “I think the backyard space has worked really well and it’s now fully utilised,” she says. The carefully planned outdoor lighting scheme highlights each feature.
Marine-grade stainless steel LED lights illuminate the central ponytail plant and alfresco, while LED cubes and pool balls accentuate the pool and lawn areas. “My favourite would be the washed aggregate step which has LED strip lighting underneath, so that at night it looks as if it’s floating,” Denise says. One of the most eye-catching LED features is the bamboo-print light box on the wall, which was designed by Outside In to complement the bamboo artwork inside the home. “Light boxes really make an area a definite focal point,” Denise says. “Many people use them as focal points instead of using water features because they are low-maintenance and very efficient in terms of electricity use.” The old fibreglass swimming pool was
recoated to give it a new lease of life and the owners’ favourite tree – a frangipani – was relocated to a planter box that was designed to follow the curve of the pool. “It is always a little bit more difficult to design around an existing swimming pool,” Denise says. “Curved pools are a little outdated these days, but we think the design complemented the shape.” Denise says the owners, who love to entertain friends and family, are delighted with how practical and functional their new backyard has become. “They think its fantastic that the guests now have many places to sit, such as the conversation areas or under the alfresco by the pool,” she says. my STYLE
SIMPLY STUNNING Throwing your home open every weekend to the public can’t be much fun, but Attadale couple Paul Wademan and Trish Milne actually don’t mind it at all
D
ESIGN consultant Paul Wademan and his partner, Trish Milne, love an uncluttered look. Which is fortunate given that each weekend their stunning Attadale home becomes a Ross Griffin display home. “It’s no drama at all opening up our home,” Paul says. “Our style is contemporary and minimalistic. We definitely don’t hoard stuff.” The look certainly suits the narrow-lot home, which Paul and Trish share with teenage daughters Holly and Jess. Snowy white walls and pale floor tiles emphasise light, open spaces and provide the perfect backdrop for splashes of lime green and charcoal grey, and the honeyed tones of the timber decking outside. There are big picture windows, an open-tread staircase, strategically placed water features, gallery-style spaces and a sleek glossy kitchen featuring an angled island bench and glass splashbacks. Paul, who switched careers to become a design consultant with Ross Griffin Homes shortly after the company built the new house, knows first-hand just how comfortable a wellorientated skinny-lot home can be. Built on a 530sq m block that’s just 10m wide, the house has a central north-facing indoor/outdoor area that enables the family to live outside almost as much as they live inside. Trish loves the easy flow from one area
to the next and the way the kitchen relates to the living and entertaining areas, especially the alfresco space with its sofas and dining table. “The girls come out here and read or study or bring the computers out for a change of scenery and a bit of fresh air,” she says. It’s the first house Paul and Trish have built together and they have selected statement pieces that really set off its modern lines and open spaces. There’s a fun pebble sculpture from Bali, giant pots planted with colour and a fabulous water feature with bubble shapes cut out of sheets of stainless steel. The orientation of the house and the fact that it’s not overlooked means they have been able to keep windows free of curtains and blinds, bringing in bags of light and maximising the views that the landscaping has created. At the far end of the house is an indoor entertaining room with a chic bar reminiscent of trendy boutique watering holes. “We wanted to make sure that wherever the bar was, people could interact with everybody else around,” Paul says. “We also wanted something that was going to be a point of difference.” Paul worked with Ross Griffin Homes designer Yaros Gilenko on the concept for the bar, which includes open shelves and funky

LED lights that change colour, although it was the sky blue of one of Paul’s shirts that proved to be the starting point for the design. Painting the ceiling and the back wall of the bar black gives the impression that the display cabinet is floating. While Paul and Trish wanted timber decking outside, they were definite about wanting tiles inside. “We liked the look of concrete, but wanted something that was not as commercial. We wanted something that was softer and more subtle,” Paul says. Large-format tiles proved to be the answer,
but it took a year of searching before what they had in mind became available. While the overall look of the home is sleek and uncluttered, the strong lines and varying ceiling heights add definition and interest. “The house pretty well fits in with everything we try to do when we sit down with someone who has a narrow block and we talk to them about the design and how they want to live in the home,” Paul says. INNOVATIVE MOVES It all began with a Ricarda outlet in Albany 14 years ago, but the Loecker family have shown their penchant for the retail trade by opening their third showroom – this time in Subiaco
R
ICARDA is renowned for its welcome blend of fashion, furniture, homewares and accessories. The Albany and Dalkeith stores are popular hot spots for retail therapy and the newest Subiaco showroom – which opened its doors last year – is rapidly becoming a shopping haven. Co-owner Pauline Loecker says the innovative mix of items in stock means customers can come into the store and buy an entire outfit as well as pick up something for the home. “It’s the kind of concept which allows you to find everything you want in here,” she says. According to Pauline, the fashion and furnishings on display work well together, but can also stand alone. “I find they just really work well together. Quite often they are complete opposites to
each other but they also often complement each other,” she says. Pauline says the first Ricarda store opened in Albany about 14 years ago. It was the brainchild of her mother, Ricarda Loecker, who has a background in art, design and fashion. Pauline’s sister, Brenda Loecker, is also involved in the business. “We’ve built up an amazing clientele and have a great, loyal following for our brand,” Pauline says. An overwhelmingly positive consumer response prompted the trio to extend their business to Subiaco. Pauline says finding the right location was a key factor and the choice of the old, character building was ideal in order to make the products “pop”. “By acquiring a nice old building, we were

able to create the space to bring in the brands we wanted,” she says. The Subiaco outlet has been a big hit with local design buffs who flock there to spend big in the Kartell concept store set up inside the showroom. “The Kartell concept store is a shop within a shop,” Pauline says. “It showcases a large range of Kartell chairs and a variety of niche pieces.” Other impressive products on display at Ricarda include Missoni Home accessories and Dibbern porcelain. Designer petware, linens and stationery have also made their way into the upmarket mix. Kristy Symonds

TREVOR COCHRANE the garden guru
GLASS AND CLASS This is the second of a two-part report by Trevor Cochrane on the 2012 Ellerslie International Flower Show in Christchurch – hailed by visitors and experts as one of the best in the world
I
F you’re a fan of fantastic garden shows, put the Ellerslie International Flower Show in Christchurch, New Zealand, on your travel itinerary for 2013. This is an important period for the people of Christchurch, who are so grateful for the help the world provided them in their hours of need after a devastating earthquake rocked the city to its core. After attending the 2012 Ellerslie International Flower Show, which was of the most enjoyable garden show experiences I’ve ever had, I’m planning to go back next year and I’ll be happy to show visitors from Australia around if they’re there. I profiled some of the gold-medal winning gardens at the 2012 show in HOME last week and just couldn’t resist showing you a few more designs that received top honours.
CASA DE VIDRO (HOUSE OF GLASS) By Metro GlassTech with Sandi MacRae This was an amazing garden with glass as the basis to much of its foundation. The centrepiece featured a stunning contemporary glasshouse that was worth $250,000 and everyone who saw it said they wanted it (until they found out how much it cost). The glasshouse was outstanding, but the garden also showcased many different and clever ways to use glass, including three separate plates of glass that were combined to create depth in the external walls. They were imprinted with writing describing the garden and its brief in a 3D effect that was very stylish. The base of the glasshouse featured clever use of plants with pathways of shattered-glass paving that looked sensational.
TRANSITIONS By Colin Meurk (Landcare Research) Colin created a garden that featured materials gathered from the devastation of the earthquake and reused them to show the transition from disaster to restructure using the wonderful green environment of the Canterbury region in his design. The use of plants and materials here was inspired and thought-provoking, attracting enormous interest from visitors.
SHE LOVES ME, SHE LOVES ME NOT By Ben Hoyle of Blue Gecko Landscapes Ben built a water garden with a giant lily pad. The pond was intended to be reflective and the best reflective water is black, so this water was infused with coffee and black vegetable dye to achieve maximum reflection. It was a highly creative project that also won the people’s choice award for best display. Being the people’s choice is possibly the most coveted of all awards as far as designers go. Ben was also honoured with a last-minute invitation to head to the UK this year to exhibit at the Hampton Court Garden Show, which is considered one of the best in the world.
If you have ever been to a garden event such as Ellerslie and seen the breathtaking creations, you’ve probably wished you could replicate
HOME
some the features you’ve admired in your own garden. For instance, making a glass pathway is not something you would ever know how to do. That’s where this show is so different to any I’ve ever been to. The Landscape Industry of New Zealand runs a display that amusingly attracts a large number of comments from visitors who say, “Look at that, they didn’t get their display finished”, because there are teams of landscapers working on-site the whole time the show’s open. What they progressively do over the period of the show is create a garden before visitors’ eyes. They talk about the things they are doing and share the tricks to doing it yourself at home. These were just some of the highlights for me. I’m certain that if you asked 20 visitors you’d get 20 different outcomes. The student gardens, for instance, were beautiful and incredibly clever and possibly the most heavily visited area at the show. There is no doubt in my mind that a new generation of international garden design stars were on display at this year’s event. If there was one trend or consistent feature in the gardens that stood out, it would have to be the use of edible plants in everyday gardens. There is no doubt in my mind the younger designers led this trend by integrating edible and ornamental plants to create gardens that were brimming with flowers, colour, texture and food. I think they will be driving this trend and coming up with more innovations for many years to come. If you’ve invested in an edible garden, you’re also going to be at the forefront of garden trends for many years to come. The second and more noticeable change to landsdcape design is the extensive use of flowers in gardens. I predicted 18 months ago that the trend would emerge and this year’s event was overflowing with colour – something the visitors just loved. Strappy-leaf plants, many of which actually originated from New Zealand, have all but disappeared from the latest design trends. It has to be said that Christchurch has been through hell over the past 12 months and there are areas in the heart of the city still inaccessible as they continue the demolition of some 500 remaining buildings of the 1300 that were declared unsafe and requiring demolition. The earth tremors have almost stopped completely and business is starting to get back to normal. By 2013 the recovery will be in full force, with several thousand hotel rooms reopening and the restaurant and bar scene, which was incredibly vibrant, taking off again. Despite the intensive negative news coverage, the majority of the City of Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury region was in fact relatively untouched. When travelling from the airport you wouldn’t know that the city had been hit by such a strong force. The new structures in the city, such as their
stunning art gallery, hardly sustained any structural damage at all. Sadly, the cathedral and many historic buildings have been destroyed, but there is so much more to Christchurch than its heritage architecture. Its botanical garden, considered as one of the best in the world, receives 1.5 million visitors a year and has always been the most popular tourist attraction in the region.

If you really love your gardens, you could also check out the Selwyn region garden tour, which takes you to some stunning regional gardens located across the Canterbury region. My recommendation for accommodation is to avoid the big hotels in the city and look for a guesthouse such as the Classic Villa, which offered a wonderful standard of accommodation with unbelievable breakfasts. SHOWPIECES TO TURN YOU ON Lamps have become works of art and are now used more to make a statement in the modern home than just light up an area

FFERING much more than mere room illumination, lighting has a major role to play in modern interior design. Lighting can be used to accentuate architectural features and create a contemporary focal point in a room. Used cleverly, it can set the scene for an entire design scheme. There has been a trend in recent years of having one big lighting showpiece in a home – something that is more a work of art than a light. In 2012 this trend shows no signs of waning. Expect to find standing lamps, dramatic pendants and oversized shades used as centrepieces above dining tables, kitchen islands or in living areas and entrance halls – anywhere a statement can be made. HALO Lighting’s marketing and sales consultant Hayley Beaden says lighting trends for 2012 are coming from two polar schools of design. “The first is a focus on light itself in its pure and minimal form and the second is a focus on new materials,” she says. According to Hayley, lighting design is becoming more minimal. “Often used as a continuation of architectural forms, this look can be achieved through the
use of LED strip lighting or spot and linear luminaries that are recessed deep within walls,” she says. “This technique is ideal for creating different moods within living spaces. “The most ideal lighting design is adjustable. The addition of dimmable and even programmable settings allows for various functions within the one space.” On the other end of the spectrum, Hayley says lighting designers are becoming increasingly playful, experimenting with new materials and colours to create something quite out of the ordinary. “Designers are flipping the world of decorative lighting design on its head,” she says. As always, environmental and energy saving considerations are continuing to dictate lighting design. Designers are becoming more adventurous with environmentally friendly LED lighting, creating eye-catching pieces that are also energy efficient. “This year we will see more LED lights being introduced to the market and many new and cool designs will come because of this technology,” says Eva Oberg, visual merchandiser at Ikea, Perth. Mobile phone As a former inkwell monitor, I remain in awe of our ability to talk to anyone from anywhere in the world at any time, even in the middle of the night (yes, you America). To contemplate life without my mobile in this modern age is just too horrendous. Hips A previously unappreciated anatomical asset once used by my belt. Since the unjust and aggressive advance of my stomach, my pants miss them. The battle for territorial control continues. The local Everyone should have a regular watering hole no matter how much they travel. In the east I refer affectionately to O’Connell’s in Port Melbourne as “the office – the scene of many a business lunch that is often more pleasure than business. Here in Perth, I plan to cleanse the palate with local wines at Le Poisson d’Or, which opens in Fremantle next week. Coffee All hail the barista. Wife Every man should have at least one of these. Not only are they terribly handy for finding things and remembering all sorts of information, they’re also extremely nice to hold for long periods. Mine, Pamela Susan, excels at all of the above. Children The result of excessive wife holding. A miraculous outcome. Filmmaking: What I do, where my passion lies and the reason I get up in the morning. My company, Moonflower Films, is currently finalising finance for A Crabbit Besom, the first of a slate of five films and likely to feature the fabulous Kimberley/

Pilbara. It’s a hoot, so I’ll look out for you u in the theatres. (P.S. I’ll be in blue. Wave if you want.) 8
Comfortable “clumpy shoes
To a man who once wore military AB boots and gaiters, the worth of podiatryy comfort can never truly be measured. Clumpy is a small price to pay (for comfort) and I suggest my family get over it. 9 Massage therapy When I die and go o to heaven, St Peter will issue me a towel and direct me to an infinite array of tables es for an infinite range of manipulations given by an infinite group of therapists schooled in the ancient art. I can only hope this is also the therapist’s idea of heaven or eternity will be surprisingly short. 10 Music There is no emotion or contemplative moment that is not enhanced by music of some form. It remains the only true language of the world and enriches our existence.
