positivematters Immigration and Diversity mmigration and diversity is a growing area of interest in small town Canada. The overwhelming reality is that approximately 95% of new immigrants who come to Canada settle in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. But what happens to those immigrants after they’ve been in Canada for five or ten years? Increasingly they are looking to smaller communities to find the lifestyle they perhaps envisioned when they first arrived. While the numbers are not overwhelming yet, many communities are positioning themselves to deal with the coming influx. The trends were highlighted in a recent presentation to the Chamber by Statistics Canada’s Doug Newson. The complete Powerpoint presentation is a download away at www.peterboroughchamber.ca however some selected stats include: •
Peterborough is indeed still the oldest Central Market Area(CMA) in Ontario with a median age of 42.8. (The youngest is Kitchener Waterloo at 36.4).
•
The percentage of foreign-born residents in Toronto is 45.7%, Peterborough is the second lowest in the Province at 9.4%, next to Sudbury at 6.7%.
•
Canada’s Fertility Rate has not reached the replacement level (2.2) since the early 1970’s (2006 was 1.59) Immigration makes up the rest!
•
•
In Peterborough approximately 40.2% come from Asia (including the Middle East), 29.5% from Europe, 12.1% from the United States.
The proportion of Visible Minority population in Peterborough is 2.7%, compared to a high of 42.9% for Toronto, a low of 2.1% in Sudbury, 10.3% in Oshawa, and 16% in Ottawa
•
New Canadians coming to Peterborough come from over 50 source countries. Top source countries or regions are South America, China, Philippines, Korea, England, USA. Middle East and South Asia.
•
Top languages spoken are Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, English, Arabic and Pashto.
•
New Canadians come to Peterborough for the following reasons: • A family member already lives here, • For work. Companies with significant New Canadian employees are: GE Canada, SJS Lakefield Research, Trent University and Fleming College • Private Peterborough homes as live-in caregivers. • Casa Maria Refugee Homes. • To study at Trent and Fleming College. • Secondary migration from the GTA.

Growth in our immigrant population is not only inevitable, but necessary. So what is our community doing to deal with both current and future immigrants? 1.
The newly formed Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration (PPCII) is working on an Immigrant Integration Strategy in order to increase education and awareness, develop new services, involve established community members in immigrant integration, and work towards a diversified workforce. The PPCII believes that immigration is essential for long-term social, economic and environmental community health and quality of life. The Chair is Cath D’Amico, Manager of the ESL Program at Trent University.

The aim of CRRC is to promote positive race relations in the Peterborough area. They provide education, consultation, and capacity building services to the community. Current projects include the PPCII, an online anti-racism resource centre, and ongoing educational programming. Appreciative Inquiry Creates A Positive Change Experience ransformational Change is difficult and complex at the best of times. One such technique that has been rapidly gaining popularity in leading companies is a technique called Appreciative Inquiry (AI). Organizations are centers of human relatedness, first and foremost, and relationships thrive where there is an appreciative eye—when people see the best in one another, when they share their thoughts, dreams and ultimate concerns in affirming ways, and when they are connected in full voice to create not just new products but better organizations. AI is about the search for the best in people, their organizations, and the relevant world around them. AI involves the art and practice of asking questions that strengthen a system’s capacity to heighten “positive potential”. AI theory suggests human knowledge and organizational destiny are interwoven. To be effective as executives, leaders, change agents, etc., we must be adept in the art of understanding, reading, and analyzing organizations as living, human entities. Knowing our organization and ourselves stands at the center of any transformational beginning and every attempt at change. Inquiry and change are not separate moments, but are simultaneous. To inquire is to change how we view the present moment in time. The questions we ask set the stage for what we “find”, and what we “discover”. The way we view and know our employees and our organizations is fateful and eventually becomes our destiny.
The way we view and know our employees and our organizations is fateful and eventually becomes our destiny
The cycle begins with the thoughtful identification of what is to be studied— affirmative topics. The topics selected become the organization’s agenda for learning & innovation. Topics are not viewed as problems to be solved and gaps to be closed but instead as affirmative opportunities to create new and competitive products and services. This approach has the added benefit of creating new knowledge and minimizing defensiveness and resistance that often occurs when we revert to a problem-centered approach.
The process of Appreciative Inquiry involves 4 steps: 1. Discovery—mobilizing a system of meaningful questions into a positive change core; 2. Dream—creating a clear results-oriented vision in relation to the newly discovered potential; 3. Design—creating possibility propositions of the ideal organization in which people feel is capable of expanding the positive core and realizing the articulated new dream; and 4. Destiny— strengthening the affirmative capability of the whole system to build hope and momentum around creating processes for learning, adjustment, and innovation So take a moment today to affirm and appreciate what is to come in 2009. When everyone works together to discover their strengths and envision a positive future, the sky’s the limit!

Mexicali Rosa’s ď‚ by Jef Dueck (91.9BOBFM/Country103/Energy 99.7) , Committee Co-chair On February 26th Club Laurus met once again at Mexicali Rosa’s...and things got really interesting! After a little food and drink, everyone was asked to take a seat in one of the groupings of chairs in the room. Once seated we went around the room and gave a quick introduction - as always, we had some first time attendees! After making it around the room, we began an evening of ‘Speed Networking’ (not to be confused with ‘Speed Dating’)! We handed out three questions to each group in the room. Everyone with a question was to read the question out loud to the group and provide their individual answer to that question. Questions ranged from “What are the current trends in your industry and will they become fashionable?â€? to “What is the dumbest thing your boss has ever asked you to do?â€? After a

few minutes, once everyone answered their question, we mixed up the seating and went again with new questions, and continued this process until we had gone completely around the room. We learned a little more than expected about the others in our group and, needless to say, there was a lot of laughter! It was a great exercise because there was also a lot of in-depth discussion and self-reflection on a level that we normally don’t get to by simply networking with our usual pleasantries.
Peterborough Golf and Country Club is a Traditional Stanley Thompson Championship course located minutes from the downtown core, being Peterborough’s only truly Private Members Golf & Country Club. February by Bob MacLeod, Breakfast Club Committee Co-chair Our speaker on Tuesday, February 10th was to be Mary LaRocque of Marlin Travel. Unfortunately, Mary was bit by the flu bug that has been rearing its nasty head for a lot of people this winter. Betty Johnson, Sales Representative, of Century 21 United Realty and also a Mortgage Agent of Centum Core Financial Inc. was able to fill in. Betty spoke to us about interest rates being historically low. For example: • 1980 the five year posted rates were 21% • 1990 the same five year posted rate was 14.25% • 2009 the five year rate is now 4.29% and continuing to drop
Betty also touched on the real estate market in Peterborough. It is becoming a buyers market. Homes are still selling but the average days on the market for single family residential homes in the City of Peterborough is 75 days. Buyers are still out there looking but your home needs to be priced right on the mark otherwise it is going to sit and people will buy something else. She was also the number one selling sales representative at Century 21 United Realty for 2008. If you have any mortgage or real estate enquiries, give Betty a call at 749-7934.
I am a dealer with Ecoquest and have been taking online courses with NORMI (Nation Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors). With this training, I have learned that most people require air purifiers in their homes because of mold, bacteria, smoke dust mites, etc. Ecoquest products remove even the smallest particles and kill bacteria on surfaces with Active Pure Technology. If you know someone that is constantly sick in their home or office please give me a call, I can help. My motto “We take the Solution to The Pollution”.

Some points about your credit history: • Make your payments on time.
Downsizing? Right-Sizing? Know Your Rights.
• Don’t be applying to a lot of different lenders for credit as it will reduce your credit score. • Check your credit from time to time as identity theft and credit card theft is becoming rampant. There may be items showing up on your credit that is not yours and will affect your ability to borrow in the future.

She also talked to us about why Canada is in much better shape than the US. We have been much more conservative in our lending than the US. Our banks are very strong and not asking for handouts like the big banks south of the border.

An Employer’s Obligation to their Employees Once an employer has a benefit plan in place for their firm they are obligated to inform their insurer whenever their employee’s earnings change. The purpose of keeping employee’s earnings current is to ensure that their disability coverage stays current. Failure to do so could be a costly mistake for any employer, because if an employee becomes disabled and they receive less disability income than what they are eligible for, the employer could be held responsible by the employee for the shortfall. In January of every year, the Administrators of the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan mail a form called the Annual Firm Update to each and every firm who is insured on the Plan. The form provides a list of all of the employees who participate in a firm’s benefit plan as well as each person’s gross monthly earnings. It also shows the dates of birth of each
participant, asks if there has been any changes to anyone’s earnings and provides a place to show everyone’s current earnings. The reason this form is sent out in January each year is because many firms use December 31st as their year end. Therefore, for many employees January is a time for raises and other income adjustments. Most other group benefit insurers use the annual renewal date of their firm clients group plan to remind clients to update their employee’s earnings. As an increase in income will provide a higher level of disability coverage, many employees will be asked to provide medical evidence for proof of their good health. It’s typical for an insurance company to request eligible employees to complete and submit health statements for underwriting.
Please note: the Chamber & Licensing Offices will be closed on the following dates: n Friday, April 10th, 2009 – Good Friday n Monday, May 18th, 2009 – Victoria Day n Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 – Canada Day n Monday, August 3th, 2009 – Civic Holiday n Monday, September 7th, 2009 – Labour Day
Additional questionnaires and a visit by a Nurse for further medical information may also be required. Employees don’t have to apply for the excess disability coverage if for some reason they don’t wish to, as it’s their choice. Not wanting to pay the additional premium cost or having a pre-existing health condition that would cause them to be declined the excess coverage are two reasons that come to mind why an employee may not want to apply. In addition to notifying your insurer of the changes to earnings right when they take place, a firm should retain the document which shows their actions.
