INNOVATIONmatters The Innovation Cluster hether promoting development of innovative new agricultural technology, or helping to attract a drug manufacturing facility to the Peterborough region, the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster is actively supporting an economic environment that will create new knowledge-based jobs and contribute to a high quality of life for everyone living in the region. The Innovation Cluster builds on local expertise in the environment, DNA and forensics, water quality, agriculture, biomaterials and health. By developing partnerships with business and local research institutions, seeking private investment and public funding, the Innovation Cluster bridges science and business to drive a knowledge-based economy. Through the generous contributions of private sector Innovation Cluster members, combined with funding programs provided by government agencies, the Innovation Cluster offers a variety of services to support innovation in the Peterborough region. Recently, thanks to the support of the

One such initiative was a partnership with Trent University, University of Guelph, Agricultural Adaptation Council, and the Greater

Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC) to complete a feasibility study for establishing a Centre of Excellence for Dairy Goat Research. Innovation Cluster staff are currently working on an implementation plan to support this growing market. The Innovation Cluster has also assisted Trent University’s efforts to attract several million dollars to establish a Biomaterials Management Research Centre that will create eight to ten new jobs and contribute to the area’s green technology expertise. In addition, more than $100,000 has been secured to formalize an international partnership between Trent University and the Riken Institute in Japan, related to research on crop yield development in soy. The International Consortium on Anti-Virals (ICAV) is another exciting project supported by the Innovation Cluster through provision of government relations, preparation of an impact study and positioning Peterborough as a location for a future manufacturing facility. The Innovation Cluster is supporting an $88 million funding application to the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative. If successful, it will result in ICAV establishing a $160 million manufacturing facility, creating approximately 200 jobs in the Peterborough area. Trent University and Fleming
College provide significant expertise in the area of water quality and the Innovation Cluster has been working with the Worsfold Water Quality Centre at Trent University, and the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment at Fleming’s Frost Campus in Lindsay, to explore opportunities to attract businesses to take advantage of the available research expertise and state-of-the-art facilities infrastructure. The Innovation Cluster has drafted new business models, and is in the process of establishing a ‘Water Network’ to further opportunities for these important centres. One of the ways that you can support the work of the Cluster is to become a member. Membership includes recognition as a sponsor, networking opportunities with key people involved in the Cluster, investment opportunities, regular information sessions designed to brief you on evolving work areas and more. If you or your business would like to explore ways to be part of this local innovation and help grow our knowledgebased economy please contact Danielle Rocheleau, Director of Innovation, Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster by telephone at 705-748-1011 ext. 7005, or by email at drocheleau@ innovationcluster.ca

CAUTIONmatters Read, before you sign reminder to carefully read what you are signing, and/or ask for advice, before you sign a document, if you are unsure why your signature is required. We have two Clients who received a form titled “Industry and Commerce 2009, Register of Business Information”, with a maple leaf appearing beside the heading. The form asks you to check the details of your business, as shown on the form, make any corrections, sign, then return in the envelope provided. The Client, who asked for advice, disposed of the form. The Client who signed and returned the form is now being threatened with collection proceedings for an outstanding invoice for $4,500.
This form is not a request to update your business information for a Canadian government agency, but an order form to advertise in “Industry and Commerce”, which is produced by a European-based publishing company by the name of “European City Guide”. The cost to do so is $1,500 per edition, for three editions, and the order will be extended annually unless you advise otherwise, in the appropriate manner. Remember - always be aware of what you are signing, as the consequences can be quite unexpected.
SCAM ALERT! Credit Card FRAUD This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want, which is the three-digit PIN number on the back of the card. They ask you to provide them with this number to verify that you are in possession of your card. Please note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it, but they don’t have your PIN number and, once you provide them with the three-digit PIN number, they will immediately begin to charge items to your card. If you do receive a call that is suspicious, tell them that you will call the toll free number on the back of your VISA/MasterCard to verify. If it’s a legitimate call, they will understand your apprehension. Remember, if the call is genuine, and it really is VISA or Master Card calling, they will never ask for anything on the card, they already know the information, since they did issue the card.
onthecover: Neil Emery, Innovation Cluster Dr. Neil Emery in his “lab” at Trent University. Dr. Emery is expanding his research into increasing the yields of soy crops, by working closely with the Innovation Cluster. He recently completed a partnership with the Riken Institute in Japan. The Innovation Cluster has also assisted Trent University’s efforts to attract several million dollars to establish a Biomaterials Management Research Centre that will create eight to ten new jobs and contribute to the area’s green technology expertise.

PREVENTion bywayne glancy

matters
H1N1 Influenza Virus Concerns he recent explosion of media coverage on H1N1 influenza has caused major concern among the general public. I recently heard the Chief Medical Officer of Peterborough say that Peterborough was not at risk from the H1N1 Flu, and we still do not have any cases at this writing. Keep in mind however, if you travel to any city outside of Peterborough, and even if you stayed in Peterborough, you could still come in contact with people who have had contact with the virus. Here are some preventative measures you and your family can practice to prevent the risk of infection:
• Throw tissues in the trash after you use them. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth (germs spread this way). • The consumption of pork products is safe. H1N1 influenza has not been shown to be transmissible to people through eating pork. H1N1 flu viruses are killed by cooking temperatures of 160°F/70°C.

• Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, keeping physically active and eating nutritious food. • Wash your hands with soap or alcohol-based hand cleaners and water often. • Try to avoid close contact with people who have fever and cough. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

New Member Reception
n April 16th, 2009 the Chamber Boardroom was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed many of our new members at our bi-annual New Member Reception. The new members were welcomed by 2009 Board Treasurer Tony Smith, of Tristone Media Group, who encouraged members to really make the most of their Chamber membership, by taking advantage of all that the Chamber has to offer! Networking events, professional development workshops, affinity programs, advertising opportunities, and memberto-member discounts were just some of the great benefits presented. New members were able to showcase their
thevoiceofbusiness
businesses by setting up a small display and were able to meet many other new members, Chamber Board members and Chamber staff. New members filled the Chamber Boardroom, as they visited one another’s displays and found out more about the wide variety of products and services each has to offer. Spa services, home builders & contractors, deck designers, real estate & financial services, e-bikes, senior’s services, virtual tours, event planning, career services, video store, website
design, take-out sushi, and even a turtle trauma centre, were all in attendance! Members also had an opportunity to sample a wide variety of delicious appetizers, generously provided by our members Simply Sushi, Burnham Mansion and Jake’s Neighbourhood Grill. Thank you to all new members for joining us at this wonderful event, and welcome to all!

April Mexicali Rosa’s by Brooke Turney (Nexicom), Committee Co-chair What a meeting we had!! During our April gathering, The Club Laurus Committee was pleased to announce that we have an official Event Sponsor, and we couldn’t be happier! Thank you so very much to Patric Marren and his team at Nationwide Barter for becoming our official Club Laurus Sponsor. We used this monthly meeting as an opportunity for the group to honour and get to know our new Sponsor. We invited Pat to speak about his journey as a successful local business owner and passionate community advocate. Pat took the stage at Mexicali Rosa’s and began by sharing with us his thoughts on our Club Laurus group. Pat said that Club Laurus had caught his attention when it first began over two years ago. He went on to say that he feels
that this particular group could become one of the very strongest in our area. With such enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, the Club Laurus ‘goers’ could very well become the business leaders of the near future. Pat inspired us with stories of how he began his business career and there was one key message that Pat emphasized for us to take away with us: “To have integrity each and every day”. Such a philosophy is crucial for balancing both personal and business success in today’s fast-paced world. Nationwide Barter partners with many local networking and social groups and we are thrilled that Club Laurus has been added to this impressive list.

May by Bob Behan (The Protectors Group), BAH Committee Chair The May BAH was hosted by The Phoenix Alternative Learning Centre on May 5th. They literally raised the roof at 1097 Water Street to accommodate the action created by Valerie MacLean and Steve Clark, with three businesses under the Phoenix banner.
Peterborough is fortunate to have these leading educational and brain-changing services in our area. Their successes are widely recognized as visitors come to Peterborough and learn how to implement similar programs within their own communities.
The Phoenix Alternative Learning Centre is a therapeutic centre within an educational environment, offering individualized programming to create a non-stressful and productive learning environment where students may realize continued success.
Steve Clark, P. Eng., with over 25 years of engineering experience, has recently launched Phoenix Engineering Services from this location. He provides design expertise and project management for a broad range of civil, geological and municipal engineering assignments.
The Phoenix Centre for Neurodevelopment is a clinical setting, providing HANDLE® Neurodevelopmental Evaluation and Therapeutic Programs to clients from across Canada and the USA.
Steve, Valerie and their staff were wonderful hosts to the Chamber members. We were delighted to find out more about these unique businesses and to learn more about the “learning” process. Thank you for having us!

Ontario Chamber of Commerce Provincial Nominee Program Goes From Pilot Project to a Permanent Resource Attracting and retaining a foreign trained professional or international student that your business needs may have become a bit easier with the changes made to Ontario’s pilot Provincial Nominee Program. Canadian Chamber of Commerce Protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Canada The Canadian Chamber continues to call for legislation to better protect IPR in Canada. The government has committed to tackling two key elements of protecting IPR: legislation to allow for the search and seizure of suspected counterfeit goods at border points and gateways; and the re-introduction of updated copyright legislation. To better assist businesses in getting more attention on IPR issues, the Canadian Chamber established the Canadian Intellectual Property Council (CIPC) in 2008. In February 2009, CIPC launched a white paper that was distributed to all Parliamentarians that mapped a way
forward for intellectual property rights. Intellectual Property Rights are critical to most businesses. In today’s knowledgebased economy, it is important to have adequate measures to protect them as we compete in a global environment. There have been many calls for updates to Canadian IP rights legislation. In 2007, the House of Commons Public Safety and Industry, Science and Technology (INDU) Committees issued reports on IPR calling for sweeping changes to the way Canada protects IPR and the Canadian public. In 2008, the Competition Policy Review Panel’s Final Report noted that changes were needed to better protect IPR for Canada to remain competitive.
For more information on this issue, please contact Chris Gray, Director – Canadian Intellectual Property Council, (cgray@ chamber.ca or 613-238-4000 ext. 251). For additional information on Canadian Chamber of Commerce activities, please refer to their website at www.chamber.ca

ContinYou - A New Conversion Health and Dental Plan After a number of years of planning and hard work the Chambers of Commerce Group Benefit Insurance Plan is introducing ContinYou; their new conversion health and dental plan for individuals. It was created to fill the void for Chamber Plan participants for when they leave their employment or retire. The continuation of health and dental benefits is a big concern for benefit plan participants when they are nearing retirement or their 75th birthday, when benefits typically terminate. The new coverage is underwritten by Co-operators Life Insurance Company and is administered by the Johnston Group, the administrators of the Chambers Plan. It offers an easy transition from the Chambers Plan coverage to an individual health and dental plan.
In order to be eligible for ContinYou, Chamber Plan participants simply apply for, and purchase, coverage within 60 days of their group coverage ending. No medical statements are required. Coverage begins on the 1st of the month following the day that the group health and dental benefits end. There are three levels of coverage, Base, Enhanced and Enhanced Plus. All levels include coverage for prescription drugs, paramedical services, ambulance, hearing aids and semi-private hospital rooms. Dental and Vision coverage are also available with the Enhanced and Enhanced Plus coverage. Premiums are paid on a monthly basis by pre-authorized payment.
Health Plan to apply for ContinYou. If the applicant is applying for family coverage, their dependents must also be a resident of Canada and have provincial health care coverage. Premiums are based on age and province of residence. Rates will change with age. With Baby Boomers now entering their 60s the introduction of ContinYou is right on time. This article has been brought to you exclusively by your Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan Agent/Broker, Brian Bulger. For more information, Brian can be reached at 741-1400.
