prosperitymatters rosperity, by definition, is the state of flourishing, thriving, success and good fortune. It is also the name of the Peterborough Chamber’s premier business-to-business tradeshow, now in its third year. On Wednesday September 16th at the Peterborough Morrow Building, Prosperity 2009 will showcase over 120 Peterborough and area companies exhibiting to a prospective audience of over 1,500 visitors. Attending a tradeshow such as Prosperity 2009, especially during challenging economic times, can be the best way to obtain knowledge, keep current and get ideas that can help you make educated decisions on how to help your company move forward. Prosperity 2009 brings like-minded business professionals, entrepreneurs and individuals together with exhibitors for a full day of networking, education and face-to-face contact. For anyone in business, this is a mustattend event.

participant for the past two years, MicroAge Technology Solutions sees the show as a valuable vehicle to stimulate creativity, talk to customers and meet potential new customers in person. We can communicate with our clients in lots of ways, but nothing can replace face-to-face communication. We have a great time meeting everyone and look forward to seeing more new people this year. Prosperity 2009 is an excellent way to meet and greet with a great number of people in a short period of time. There are many ways to market to your clients with email, educational seminars, vendor events and one-on-one meetings. This tradeshow takes marketing one step further by putting you and your staff in the public eye, showing their expertise, and the scope of your company’s offerings. It’s about local people providing real products and services that keep our local economic wheels in motion. Today, more than ever, we need to be aware of the direct impact we have on our local economy and keep Prosperity in Peterborough.

For anyone in business, this is a must-attend event

Visitors can expect to find new products and suppliers to expand or develop their business; gain new ideas and enthusiasm to motivate staff; look for something original and different that will separate you from your competition; improve relationships within your existing business network and potential new suppliers; and establish profitable and new business relationships. You will walk away with a new perspective and better attitude to build your business.

FEEmatters Credit Card Fees & Charges Update s with many services in banking and finance, the fees and charges associated with provision of debit card and credit card processing are changing. For our members participating in the program, we are pleased to report progress in ensuring stable rates and a continuing strong relationship with our primary provider, First Data. On behalf of our members, our associates at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce have solicited comments from First Data on our program and related or competitive activities in their business. In their response to the National Chamber, First Data stated “As a proud Member and partner of the Chamber of Commerce, First Data’s primary interest is to provide not only best in class service and support to our customers, but to also ensure a full understanding and awareness of our program and what it has to offer each and every one of your Members. It is critical that in addition to understanding your fee structure, that there is an awareness of the rules of engagement (of this program). Merchant fees, as prices for any product, are based on various factors including overhead infrastructure, staffing, IT support, security and other services. In the last year and a half we have seen times of unprecedented change in the credit card industry. The changes introduced as part of various spring & fall releases by MasterCard, have required a sizable effort and ongoing systems costs have been incurred. Some of these changes include:

“we GOT ONE!” Sara & Bruce Canadian Distribution Channel Peterborough

• New MasterCard International Processing or ‘event’ fee(s) on foreign transactions • New associated interchange rates applied to ‘card not present’ transactions • New associated interchange rates for ‘high spend’, ‘premium’ and ‘corporate’ card transactions Amendments and pricing changes, such as non-qualified fee and surcharge increases, have allowed us to maintain your rate of 1.79%, and as a result First Data has avoided the need to broadly increase the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) to all transaction types. The MasterCard MDR, as shown on your fee schedule is based on the assumption that your credit card transactions will qualify

at the anticipated interchange levels. In the current Chamber of Commerce program, the rate of 1.79% will allow your domestic electronic transactions which generally account for the largest percentage of your process needs.” To find out more about specific non-qualified fees and surcharges along with ways to reduce these costs, contact your First Data Representative, Harold Mann at (705) 731-7917 or by email harold.mann@ firstdata.com There is no doubt that the credit card industry has become very competitive. There are competitors knocking on doors every day with extremely low flash rates (seemingly the only rates that people seem to see when they would sign on the dotted line). We would encourage members to allow your First Data representative to walk you through the program and compare ‘apples to apples’ as Harold is the expert and will be able to point to ways that members can save money, based on their current use and profile. The MDR’s available to businesses who are members of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce continue to provide exceptional value and cost savings.

Emergencies Happen! mergencies include: · Human health care crises · Flu pandemics or SARS · Natural disasters like fires, floods, ice, wind · Tragic events like train derailments, explosions, chemical spills. Large scale emergencies generate a huge need for community volunteer support. Volunteer availability and rapid, safe, effective volunteer assignment are crucial to effective emergency response. The Emergency Volunteer Registry (EVR) is a vital county-wide volunteer database and referral system that will efficiently distribute community volunteers to appropriate responding agencies. How will it work? When needed, local organizations will request volunteers for defined positions. The EVR database will generate a list of registered volunteers whose preferences and skills match position descriptions. United Way will then contact the volunteers on the list. When an EVR volunteer accepts an assignment, they will receive a photo ID badge and instructions on reporting for duty. People like you can volunteer! Volunteers with every kind of skill and desire to assist are needed. Impacts of an emergency are so numerous and varied that all abilities and skill sets are required. Registration includes a registration form, participating in an intake interview, having a photo taken, and signing EVR forms including a police record check. Contact Cheryl Ellis at United Way at 705-742-8839 to obtain a volunteer registration package.

Agencies need to register too! In order to match available volunteers to the tasks and duties required, emergency response agencies need to have their information on the EVR also. Any organization, agency, group, or club who anticipates playing a recovery role and who will need volunteers from the community to accomplish their tasks can be registered. Contact Cheryl Ellis at United Way at 705-742-8839 to obtain an agency registration package. How will it work? When needed, local emergency response organizations will request volunteers for defined positions. The EVR database will generate a list of registered volunteers whose preferences and skills match position descriptions. United Way will then contact the volunteers on the list. When an EVR volunteer accepts an assignment, they will receive a photo ID badge and instructions on reporting for duty. Who are the Emergency Volunteer Registry (EVR) Partners? Peterborough County-City Health Unit, Peterborough Regional Health Centre, City of Peterborough, County of Peterborough, and United Way of Peterborough & District.

New Look for Whelans Floor Covering

Congratulations to Mark Whelan and everyone at Whelans Floor Covering. They’ve recently completed a major renovation of their building, which is located at 2512 Chemong Road, just south of Bridgenorth. The building started out as a fruit market thirty years ago. Mark added a second floor, a new cottage country look to the front façade, skylights, energy efficient lighting, new heating and air conditioning, and I hear they got a good deal on the new flooring as well. Mark also used all local trades for the work, and wants to remind people that their sister company Peterborough Carpetland remains open for business at 933 Weber Avenue. Congratulations to Canadian Blood Services

Congratulations to Canadian Blood Services, who celebrated their 10th anniversary on August 25th. Did you know that one donation of blood can improve or save up to three lives, and every usable part of your donation goes to a patient in need? On average, every 60 seconds someone in Canada requires blood or blood components, and since they have a limited shelf life, demand is constant. Why not make a blood donation a personal priority to ensure an adequate supply for those in need? For more information, call 1-888-2 DONATE.

Petro-Canada Merges with Suncor Energy Inc.

Effective Saturday, August 1st, Petro-Canada and Suncor Energy Inc. have merged. This represents an important step forward as the Petro-Canada and Sunoco networks will operate for the first time under one company – Suncor Energy Inc. From a customer perspective, there will be no change to any of the processes or customer experience. Sunoco specific products and Petro-Canada specific products will remain at their usual locations.

Breakfast Club Winner Profile Congratulations to Wayne Glancy of Clean Air Water & Power

July  by Betty Johnson (Century 21 United Realty), Breakfast Club Committee Co-chair A Unique Networking Opportunity The Breakfast Club has come a long way from its humble beginnings of a couple of Chamber members meeting for coffee to the 40 or so members who now gather on a regular basis. At these meetings, you will see the familiar faces of the regulars, as well as some newcomers, making it an interesting group of people to have breakfast with once a month. Breakfast Club provides a unique opportunity for a little professional development, as well as some good old fashioned networking. Each meeting features a guest speaker, selected from the Breakfast Club’s regular attendees. Attendees are given the opportunity to go once around the room, introducing themselves and offering their 30 second “elevator speech”. Once everyone has been properly introduced, breakfast is served and the guest speaker offers a brief presentation in his/her

field. Additionally, at each month’s event, all attendees’ business cards are entered into a draw and one lucky attendee will receive a free profile in the Voice of Business. Join this group of early risers who meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Carousel Restaurant to enjoy the company of fellow Chamber members, a nice breakfast and an opportunity to network. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend these Breakfast meetings, come out and join your fellow Chamber members for breakfast at 7:30 in the morning. We highly recommend it! There is no need to register and the only cost is your breakfast.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Bob MacLeod of Money Concepts Financial Planning for heading up the Breakfast Club since its inception and welcome Bob Tyne from Printer Paul who took over the helm at the July meeting.

Both have participated in the Breakfast Club since the beginning! The topic for September’s Breakfast Club meeting will be Eco Friendly Grass Maintenance with Jeff Philip of ECOrganics.

July/Summer Social  by Bob Behan (The Protectors Group), BAH Committee Chair Some things you can count on and other things you can’t. For example, the Blue Jays and the summer weather have been unreliable so far this year, however, one thing you can “bet the farm on” is the Summer Social at the Holiday Inn will be a spectacular event! It really wasn’t because of the fabulous food, which clearly illustrated the Chef’s finely honed skills… It really wasn’t because of the tremendous assortment of quality beers, including Peterborough’s very own Publican House… It really wasn’t because of the exciting choices of wines… It really wasn’t because of the courteous and professional service… It really wasn’t because of the beautiful river setting. No, it really wasn’t because of any one of the above; it was because of all of them combined, as well as the people in attendance.

Over 200 Chamber members and their guests took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of Terry Merrill and his Team at the Holiday Inn. The event was the perfect environment to meet new business contacts in an enjoyable and casual atmosphere. The Holiday Inn is in the business of providing comfort for their guests, whether through accommodation and/or food and beverage service and we are very fortunate to have one of the Industry’s finest in our own backyard. We are the grateful recipients for the Holiday Inn’s efforts. Is it any wonder they are leaders in the Hospitality Industry? Thank you for having us!

Accessibility Standards Update

Reforming Canada’s EI System

All businesses will be directly affected by new Ontario rules governing how you, in every aspect of your business, must accommodate people with disabilities. Since the passage of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) in 2005 the government has struck several public-private sector committees to assist in developing standards (which will be turned into regulation) for the AODA.

In May, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce released a policy paper outlining reforms to Canada’s Employment Insurance (EI) system to improve the equity of the system, reduce work disincentives, promote labour force mobility and ensure program costs do not create a drag on economic activity and job creation when the economy recovers.

A wide-range of new rules are being created that will affect how you hire and manage your employees; communicate to your employees and customers, clients, suppliers; change or renovate your buildings and internal structures; and deliver quality customer service, all with the laudable intention of providing an appropriate working and business environment for people with disabilities.

• Immediately and permanently making access to benefits equal wherever the unemployment rate is less than 10 per cent, flattening entrance requirement to a consistent 560 hours and extending benefit duration accordingly; • Not standardizing variable entrance requirements and benefits where unemployment levels are higher than 10 per cent; • Gradually reducing the employer EI premium rate to equal that paid by employees; • Returning EI to its original focus by removing its social program aspects, e.g., maternity and other leaves, as well as skills and training programs. These should be funded through general government programming funds; • Amending the rate-setting formula so that deficits in the EI Account are funded over the business cycle of up to 10 years.

The OCC is actively representing members’ views on several working committees that have been formed by the government to write these new rules. But the OCC is only one voice on these committees. E XAMINER THE PETERBOROUGH

Managing Frequent Absences Regardless of whether your firm has insurance coverage for short-term employee absences, or continues to pay salaries to employees away from work, managing absenteeism is an important issue. When employees are frequently absent, you not only lose their productivity, but it also impacts the productivity and morale of coworkers who may need to “pick up the slack”.

broaching such issues directly. That’s where an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) helps. An EAP offers confidential counseling services to help employees deal with personal situations that lead to absenteeism. The Chambers Plan’s EAP - Posaction, provides organizations and their employes fast access to appropriate professional resources to help employees resolve problems affecting their health, performance and attendance at work. All for about the cost of a cup of coffee per employee per month.

Keeping accurate records is critical to managing the situation. Patterns of absences often develop over time, and good record keeping makes it easier to identify, and take constructive action, before insurmountable problems develop.

So take a few minutes to review your policies, or add the security of an EAP program to your group benefit plan and make employee absenteeism one less thing to worry about.

You could put policies in place that detract employee absenteeism. For example:

Continual absenteeism or patterns of absenteeism ( e.g. away many or most Mondays and Fridays ) may be an indication there is an issue in an employee’s personal life. As an employer, you may be uncomfortable
