Your 2010 Board Chair his past year has seen some significant achievements for Peterborough and its business community. Some clear signs of success are the commencement of construction at the Peterborough Airport, as well as completion of the new Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre. There are some further activities taking place at the Chamber that, if successful, will have just as great an impact on developing not only our business community but also other regions surrounding us.

As most of you are aware, the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario have committed $3,000,000 for the rehabilitation/ reconstruction of the Canadian Pacific Railways’ Havelock Subdivision to reintroduce passenger service between Toronto and Peterborough and support the enhancement of freight. Recently the Chamber met with various levels of government with respect to the establishment of a not-for-profit corporation to assist with the structure of this railway project.

The Chamber is taking the lead role to drive this major project to fruition. We anticipate that our recent efforts with respect to rail will continue well into 2011.

Another highlight of the past year was completion of the significant renovations to our Chamber building, enabling us to lease professional office space to various businesses throughout our community.

Our Chamber building looks fantastic and leasing arrangements have been successful. This will help generate lost revenue due to the termination of the Chamber’s licensing services contract. Many thanks to Chamber staff for their support and patience during the renovations.

Some of the external issues we concentrated on over the last twelve months, including increased membership, better lobbying of local governments, and providing better services to our members are best set out in the various committee reports and I encourage all members to review the many initiatives we have dealt with or been an integral part of over the last year.

2010 Treasurer’s Year-end Review

s everyone knows, the past year has been one of significant change for the Chamber, but I can reassure everyone that we are really moving forward! With the closure of Licensing and the opening of our new Business Centre, our business model has undergone a significant overhaul.

Along with that transition has come a physical restructuring of our historic building. Entering 2010, we had only ideas on paper. As the months passed the plans and costs became reality and construction began. Despite the changes, the Chamber continued doing all the other things they do (including Licensing Bureau services), and even through the sound of hammers and saws, office relocations, dust, etc, the staff at the Chamber was nothing short of exceptional!

Forecasting the 2010 financial year in the fall of 2009, knowing that we were about to enter a year of change, meant we had a lot of variables that were tough to estimate accurately.

However, the early, proactive action

by Stu and the Board of Directors ensured we covered as many angles as possible. After much deliberation, our Final Budget for 2010 was to essentially break even at +$100 Net Profit. Here’s how the year played out…

Licensing Bureau – 42% of Revenues Our budget for the Licensing Bureau anticipated a decline in transactions beginning in September as we neared our closing date. However, that did not happen and we remained very busy right up until our closing date of November 29th. This meant we were able to exceed our budget, coming in at 110%.

Membership – 35% of Revenues Membership revenues also remained strong and just over budget at 101%.

There is little doubt members believe they are getting exceptional value from your Chamber, and we continue to see strong renewal rates and new members.

Miscellaneous – 23% of Revenues Miscellaneous revenue consists of many revenue streams generated by such line items as the membership directory, group insurance, advertising and interest income revenue. Due to changes in a number of our advertising platforms, as well as continued shortfalls with interest income on investments, Miscellaneous Revenues fell short of budget by 7%.

The numerous special events run by your Chamber are an extremely important contributor to the income stream, and the Chamber is constantly working to make them better! This year also saw the addition of a new event in the “9 n’ Dine”! Special Events yielded a net profit of over $65,000 in 2010 – 17% over our forecasted budget. So, thank you, and please keep attending the events!

With the Licensing Bureau now closed, building renovations have now entered a final phase. Because

of that, a new line was created in this year’s budget that will also be prominent in the 2011 Budget and forward: “Rental Income”! A few vacancies remain available in our new Business Centre and we are working hard at finding and accommodating tenants that have a need for what we are offering. Other building improvements are also underway that we hope will bring many long term benefits. And, speaking of construction, the Chamber website was also rebuilt in 2010 and along with that we have started using a new Chamber Management database that is very efficient and user-friendly. It has also brought many more effective opportunities for advertising and we have already experienced some great success selling those new programs and advertising offers.

The break-even budget for 2010 was a challenging goal with all the uncertainties in the past year, but Stu and the Chamber did an excellent job controlling expenses as well as finding new and better opportunities to increase revenue. The bottom line is a great achievement, as your Chamber will finish the year with a “Pre Audit” Net Total within $1,500.00 of a +$100 (break-even) budget.

We may have a few more ‘certainties’ entering 2011, however it will officially be the transition year to move into our newly revised business model. The Board approved a 2011 budget deficit of $16,900. That said, your Chamber has done its homework and we are all eager to put the changes into action and move toward a balanced budget in 2012. It was my privilege to serve as your Chamber Treasurer in 2010, and I welcome Drew Merritt as your 2011 Treasurer!

ow!!! What a fantastic year. It was a most amazing year to embrace the opportunities and transform them into actions. This was the most valuable year for me with never ending learning possibilities.

The Chamber Policy Committee was deeply involved in major strategic complex issues. Here are a few key activities which the Committee has accomplished during the year 2010 and the activities that will be completed in 2011: Places to Grow Legislation The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) is a provincial plan that establishes a policy framework for managing growth in the GGH to the year 2031.

With a vision to building stronger, more prosperous, and complete communities, the Growth Plan will guide municipal and provincial decisions on a wide range of issues that include transportation, infrastructure planning, land use planning, urban form, housing, natural heritage, and resource protection. However the growth

numbers used in the report for Peterborough are very low. Low growth numbers has an impact on Tourism, the 407 Extension and Train to Peterborough. The Chamber invited City Planners to Policy Committee meetings, initiated discussions and established actions which were communicated to various government levels raising concerns on the incorrect figures. We thank Jim Hill and Bruce Danford for their tireless efforts, for being vocal about this error and its impact on Peterborough. The Government has announced a review of the Places to Grow numbers. The Chamber will continue to follow up this activity in the next year and will take necessary actions as required.

Train, whether it is freight or passenger, both are important for Peterborough. Several organizations are dependent on the freight service to sustain their business.

Passenger train is important for a reduction in pollution, stress and road maintenance as well as an increase in tourism in Peterborough.

Provincial and federal funding is available for the rail link, however, the report from Places to Grow is not in favour to support the train link to Peterborough. The Chamber has taken a lead role in this issue by raising our voice to various levels and has arranged several meetings with the key stakeholders including the MP, MPP, City & County to look for alternate options to bring the train to Peterborough. As part of the steering committee for looking for alternate options, the Chamber is working on a proposal to create a Not-for-Profit/Charity rail corporation. The idea is to create an independent corporation which

can run the rail line to Peterborough.

This has already been successfully implemented in British Columbia and in the United States. Many thanks to Tony Smith and Arlynn Dupuis for their constant support. This activity will continue into the next year.

Highway 407 The provincial government has announced that the planned extension of Highway 407 to Highway 35/115 will now be split into two phases, with the first phase ending at Simcoe Street in Durham Region.

Years of preparation and study are simply being set aside in favour of a two-phase approach which delays the expenditure but causes significant problems in the meantime.

The Chamber has sent a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty and MPP Jeff Leal highlighting the problems caused by this decision and recommending that this project proceed as planned, in one phase with a completion date of 2013. The Chamber will continue to be vocal on this activity into the next year.

Prosperity Round Table Report/ Government Affairs Committee The Chamber is an active member of the Government Affairs Committee. This committee comprises of independent business groups and politicians from all levels of government, including the Mayor, Warden, MPP and MP or their representatives. The purpose of the committee is to bring all levels of Government and Business Community leaders to a common platform of understanding on the key issues and opportunities which the City and County are facing. This Committee is moving forward to its original purpose.

he role of the Program Committee is to continue to promote a positive image of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce throughout the community. Our committee is responsible for maintaining current Chamber events, as well as developing new exciting opportunities for our members to network and have the ability for professional development.

Our committees and sub-committees involve many member volunteers who donate their time and expertise to organize and run all of our events. In combination with a great partnership with Chamber staff we create successful events.

Recognizing our volunteers is crucial in the success of our Chamber of Commerce. Sharon Legon leads the way as Chair of the Volunteer Management Committee. In conjunction with our January Business After Hours we will celebrate all those members who give up their time to ensure the success of our Chamber. We urge all members to join us on January 4th, 2011 at the Chamber Office to say: “Thank you”.

The Chamber’s Annual Gala was held on February 6th at a new venue: the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, and this venue suited this event perfectly! The theme was “Rocky Mountain Romance” and a lucky winner walked away with a prize for a trip for two out west. The Committee Chair was Jef Dueck and this committee created a wonderful evening to honour our 2010 Chair Arlynn Dupuis.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held at the Holiday Inn in March, which not only contained information of the business of the Chamber, but also included the “Political Power Hour”, which provides representatives from all levels of government the ability to update attendees on their political activities.

The Annual Golf Tournament at the Kawartha Golf and Country Club in June was once again sold out! Even though the weather wasn’t perfect it didn’t damper the participants from having a great time. Golf Tournament Chair Bob Doornenbal and his team created another fantastic event.

In 2010 the Chamber started a new event call the 9’n Dine Golf Tournament. Carol Pedler and her team created this event from the ground up, which was a ninehole scramble golf tournament at Keystone Links. This event started at 3pm and was followed by a fantastic meal.

The Annual Prosperity Tradeshow took place on September 15th at the Morrow Building, and this

year we increased the number of booths available to members. We were sold out and saw a very steady flow of people throughout the day.

A special thank you to our show sponsor: MicroAge. As Chair of this event I want to thank our very effective committee and the Morrow Building staff for their assistance. We have already had members express their desire to have a booth next year so please if you want a spot please book your spot early for 2011.

The Business Excellence Awards were a huge success. This year we included a new Skilled Trades category, bringing the number of awards to 18. This event celebrates the successes and achievements of our Business Community and, with over 500 people in attendance we wish to congratulate Chair, Drew Merrett and his team on a fantastic event. Also a special thank you to Teresa Kaszuba of CHEX TV and Bob Doornenbal of the Peterborough Examiner for keeping us on track and entertained all night long. A special award went to Mary Carolyn Hart of Lazer Graphics as “Business Citizen of the Year”. Congratulations to all finalists and winners!

Our Breakfast Club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Carousel Restaurant and Bob Tyne managed this group for most of the year. Cora Whittington has assumed the Chair’s position for 2011. This group meets to network and enjoy speakers on a variety of topics and also helps members develop their elevator speeches. This is a great way to start your work day.

Business After Hours (BAH) is one of the Chamber’s biggest and

most successful events. Bob Behan has the responsibility of the Chair role, which he excels at. Host businesses have an opportunity to showcase their product and services to 100+ members monthly. This event is made possible at no cost because of our BAH Sponsor: OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs.

Young Professional Group (YPG), formerly Club Laurus, is a group for business owners and employees who are under 40. Chair Jason Chessar and his committee have developed a great schedule of meetings that allow participants to network, as well as develop and create relationships, all in a fun atmosphere. This group also has a fantastic sponsor: The Venue, allowing members to come at no cost every month.

This has been a great year in our Program Committee. There are a few new events that will be joining the Chamber in the near future. A special thank you to all committee and sub-committee members for all of your hard work this past year. As well, thank you to all event sponsors and members who attend each of these events, and a special

thank you to Chamber staff who manage the events to ensure their success.

As September was campaign time for the recent Municipal election, our YPG group had the opportunity to hear from both Mayoral candidates and ask their questions. October featured an informative presentation from Alex Mortlock and Cathy Mitchell of Peterborough Green-Up on `Greening Up Your Workspace”, and November featured a presentation on Joint Ventures. In December YPG merged with the Business After Hours to host the wonderfully successful Christmas Social event at the home of our YPG sponsor, The Venue! November This month’s speaker was Jane Martin, Senior Home & Auto Insurance Agent for CAA. Jane gave us a brief overview of what CAA has to offer and reviewed ways with us that you can buy your insurance. She explained how insurance works and how premiums are calculated. Jane also explained what happens to your premium dollars and what your insurance contract actually pays for. She then went over some “did you know?” facts.

Our semi-annual New Member Reception and mini-trade show was held in the Chamber Boardroom on Tuesday, November 23rd. It was an extremely well attended event with 14 businesses new to the Chamber represented.

The range of business was wide and had representation from the following areas: Financial and Human Resource Consulting, Education and Re-training, Insulation, Sewing, Electrical Supply, Asset Management, Mediation and Arbitration Services, and a Mobile Recording Studio. This is a great indication that the Peterborough business environment is alive and well!

Chamber Christmas Social – The Venue

We would like to thank OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs for hosting the November BAH. Chamber members enjoyed the delicious food offerings, an interesting and informative view of the gaming business, and the experience of playing in a Slots Tournament just for fun. Laurie Crowe of The Quality Inn established herself as the champion of the Slots Tournament and left with a slightly heavier wallet and the smile of a winner.

Every year, in the month of December, the Chamber combines the regular BAH and YPG events into one fabulous Christmas Social event, and the December 7th Social was no exception! With record-breaking attendance, over 250 members excitedly entered the doors of the brand new `Venue’ for an evening filled with delicious food, wonderful entertainment and great networking!

OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs is the sponsor of our BAH event and their support allows the Chamber to provide these monthly business-building opportunities to members at no cost. OLG’s efforts as a welcoming host and terrific sponsor are sincerely appreciated!

The Venue, owned by Michael Skinner and managed by Christian Tanna, has recently opened on George Street and is Peterborough’s newest multifunctional event space. The Venue will host national touring artists in concert, corporate functions, seminars, weddings, conventions, Christmas parties, gala events and much more! Chamber guests entered through the stylish and comfortable Lobby Wine Bar which opens up to the massive Main Hall where members were able to sample wonderful hors d’oeuvres and goodies donated by many of our fantastic members! Members were entertained by the brilliant music of Jake Dudas and had an opportunity to win one of the generous door prizes donated by our members.

Policy Matters... continued from page 7 GPA EDC Update Over the years, the Chamber has been closely involved with the GPA EDC on various activities. The GPA EDC plays a crucial role in the development of Peterborough City and County. Laura Lauzon has kindly updated the Policy Committee on the GPA EDC’s successful implementations. Thank you Laura!

Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration (PPCII) Growth comes with diversity and the Chamber strongly believes in and adopts diversity. The Chamber is working with other organizations to support and to attract foreign trained professionals to Peterborough and sits on the advisory committee for PPCII. Municipal Elections Think Positive and Think out-of-the-box – the Chamber brought new ideas not only to the business community but also to the community in general. Municipal elections play an important role in the growth and development of the City and County. Hence, PETEWATERSPEC.AD:Quark ad template the Chamber initiated an awareness series

in the community, like a breakfast meeting between the mayoral candidates in October to get their views on economic development, infrastructure, growth, and strategy for the future. The Chamber also initiated the “Think About Voting” Campaign. This campaign was to convey the message that municipalities are multi-billion dollar industries and voters need to think about that when considering a candidate. Both activities went very well and good press coverage brought about a better awareness to the community on the selection of people who will run the city.

Finally, words fail to express my appreciation and sincere gratitude to Stuart Harrison – the driving force for the Chamber. His tremendous energy, expertise, winning attitude and passion in all activities is an absolute phenomenon.

As part of the Strategic Plan, the Chamber supports resolutions that impact the community and has recently started the reinstatement of the health resolution policy - to include other professionals in the health care system team. Currently physicians are the focal point for all the health-related issues. The health resolution proposal is to include other professionals like Pharmacists, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and Optometrists, so they can take necessary actions directly, like prescribing certain medicines which only doctors can prescribe 2:52 now. Couple Rates for Health and Dental Options: They’re smart and they save firms money A few years ago the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan introduced a third marital status to their benefit program. In addition to the Single and Family rates, which are the industry standard, they created a Couple rate for a number of their health and dental coverage options.

What is the most important thing you have learned in business?

Not only is this a more equitable way of providing benefits to insured firms, it is also current with the times and can save considerable money for firms and their employees. When I compare the premium costs between the two statuses within the Chambers’ Plan the Couple health rates are a little better than 23% less than the Family health rates. The Couple dental rates are even better at close to 30% less than Family rates.

Family health and dental rates are priced for families with three or more members. So, if your firm has employees who require coverage for only themselves and their spouse, you’re paying more than your fair share for them to your group insurance provider.
