• The nomination forms are now in three parts, however, the nominator still only has to complete Part 1, which is 100 words to describe why you feel this company should be nominated based on that category’s criteria. • The online nomination forms are now easier to submit, with a ‘Submit’ button at the bottom of page 1 (for a third-party nomination) and at the bottom of page 4 for self-nominations; as well, each online nomination form includes online instructions. • To remove any ambiguity as to who is qualified to be nominated, we have modified the criteria so that all categories begin with “In recognition of…”. • The nomination forms now ask the nominator to include the physical address and website address (if there is one), for the nominee; this information will provide additional value for the judges when making their determinations.

• The nomination forms now provide the opportunity for the nominee to provide testimonials with their submission; any testimonials that can be provided would be of assistance for the judges when they are making their determinations however, with the exception of the Business Citizen nominations, it is NOT a requirement to include testimonials with a nomination submission.

….I was honoured to be a finalist and grateful to belong to such a wonderful Chamber and such a caring, dynamic community. 2010 Finalist

• And, finally, the “Manufacturing” category is now called “Supply Chain”; this name change is to reflect that, along with “locally manufactured product”, the criteria has been amended to also include wholesale/distributing, and logistics (which may include transportation, warehousing and/or packaging); we believe this category/criteria change will provide more inclusivity for our area businesses to be nominated and recognized for their Business Excellence.

…I know what an incredible honour this is and of course it starts with the Chamber.” 2010 Award Recipient

As we have done for the past couple of years now, when providing a third-party nomination, all you have to do is choose the category the nominee deserves to be in, provide us with 100 words to describe why you believe this company should be nominated, and then submit the nomination to us. We will contact the nominee for the additional information required for the judging process. Please check out our website at www.peterboroughchamber. ca and click on Excellence Awards 2011, and this will provide you with all the information about the Excellence Awards, as well as an editable pdf for each category.

If you have any questions, please call the Chamber Office at 705-748-9771 and we will be glad to answer your questions.

Early Bird Draw: If you submit a nomination prior to Aug 2nd you will automatically be entered into a draw to win 2 FREE TICKETS to attend the event, so submit your nomination now!

Seeking Your Vision For A Sustainable Future!

s local business people, you represent the lifeblood of our economy and any major municipal planning process should involve your input. The Greater Peterborough Area (GPA) is currently developing an Sustainability Plan, known as Sustainable Peterborough. The Plan is a collaborative endeavor by all members of the GPA, which includes the City and County of Peterborough, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation. Sustainable Peterborough will define a 25-year vision for the GPA, setting directions, goals, actions, and metrics for balancing the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural pillars of sustainability. You may recognize this as the “triple bottom line”, a term used widely today in business literature.

Currently, we are seeking feedback from as many groups and individuals as possible in order to build the Vision. Kindly consider taking a few minutes to fill out our VERY short (essentially two-question) survey, which can be found at www.sustainablepeterborough.ca.

2011 Prosperity Tradeshow ark your calendars for Wednesday September 14th, when the Chamber will once again be hosting Peterborough’s premiere business-to-business tradeshow at the Morrow Building from noon – 7pm. This exciting show is growing in attendance and popularity within our community and is a sell out every year. Exhibitor space is open exclusively to Chamber members, and is the perfect opportunity for you to show the Business Community what you do! This is what participants from last year’s show had to say:

• “I do believe the Tradeshow is a value to our company. We are not well marketed and many people in the city do not know who we are as an organization. Your Tradeshow allows us to gain much needed exposure.”

• “The Prosperity Tradeshow was fantastic, thank you again for the opportunity. It was a successful day for me and I am looking forward to upcoming events with the Chamber.” Parking Lot Womens Washroom

Chamberevents young breakfastclub professionals group  by Alicia Moore – AMoore Consulting April/May April was our “Take Over the Downtown Scavenger Hunt”. This event was a huge success and a fun way to get to know one another as well as some of our downtown member businesses. Thank you to all members who participated in this event and for opening your doors to us! In May, YPG welcomed Michael Skinner to speak and he spoke on his company’s growth through team dynamics, as well as being local in Peterborough. Having a good team is key to the success of a business and selecting this team must be done strategically to ensure compatibility, harmony and growth. Coming up in the month of July, YPG will be combined with the Business After Hours being on Tuesday July 5th for the Chamber’s Annual Summer Social, which is always a highlight of the season. We will see you back in August at The Venue for Speed Networking!

April

May

Dr. Jeff Lustig, from The Lustig Clinic was the April speaker and here is what he had to say:

Meredith Carter, Manager of Environmental Services, representing the Otonabee-Peterborough Source Protection Authority, addressed the members on the topic of protecting municipal sources of drinking water. During her presentation Meredith provided an overview of the Clean Water Act, 2006 and described the drinking water source protection process. She also highlighted best management practices that local business owners can implement to protect sources of municipal drinking water.

Everyone knows that chiropractors are famous for helping relieve backaches, headaches and neck pain. Chiropractic also releases stress off your nervous system, this is why so many patients experience sleeping and breathing better, deal with stress easier or enjoy improved digestion. Taking care of your nervous system can help you live a longer, healthier and happier life. We have 3 state of the art Meditech Laser Systems which are amazing at promoting healing and relieving, back pains, sciatica, arthritic knees or rotator cuff damage. Diabetic ulcers, neuropathies as well as many skin problems are also transformed with laser therapy. For more information on effective drugfree treatment Dr. Lustig can be reached at 705-743-1661 or www.tlcchiro.ca

May At Saucy Girl Fitness “Enter as guests and leave as friends” reads the sign on the door and I think they really mean that. At least that is the feeling you got while visiting Saucy Girl Fitness in the Mark’s Work Wearhouse Plaza on Lansdowne Street for the Chamber’s May BAH. Saucy Girl Fitness is an upscale, non-intimidating, comfortable fitness centre, exclusively for women who want to “get their sexy back” or simply improve their health and stay fit. Members range in age from 18-84 and are able to use the machines and equipment with ease. A pole fitness studio, complete with classes, provides a further choice of activities for your enjoyment.

The personnel are very supportive of your goals and are genuinely nice and “very fun” people to be around. Now that almost makes me want to be a girl…..and if I were a girl I would be a “Saucy Girl”. Most Chamber members were surprised with how large the facility is and how many beauty (pampering) and health services were available. The web site provides more details and is worth visiting. www.saucygirlfitness.com A complimentary one week membership trial offer is available and I encourage you to try it, mainly for the fun. Thank you Shantelle, Kerri-Lynn and your wonderful staff for your outstanding hospitality!

June  by Shelby Parker, Front Line Coordinator The windy dirt road leads you to a scene of luscious trees, blooming flowers and beautiful white buildings overlooking the water. It’s hard to imagine that the perfect escape from the city to Elmhirst’s Resort can exist so close to Peterborough. Elmhirst’s Resort has a story unlike most, dating back to 1818 when Philip James Elmhirst received the land from King George IV. Since then the family has cherished this property and shared it with the community.

1135 Lansdowne St. Peterborough (705) 748-9570

The welcoming Staff of Elmhirst’s Resort insists on treating every visitor like a family friend. Spa Guru Martina Linde-Elmhirst, will try to cure a headache on the spot with her Tui Na massage, while Greg Elmhirst will take you for a tour of the family wine cellar, telling the stories of each wine bottle and where the family acquired it, as though they were photos in an album.

M&M RECYCLING & DISPOSAL

As civil engineering consultants, the company’s services include municipal, transportation, water resources, structural engineering and contract administration. The company continues to experience growth in each of the civil engineering disciplines and we have expanded our various divisions to accommodate the high volume of work we have both in Peterborough and throughout Ontario.

Since winning this award many businesses have contacted M&M to find out more about all of our innovative waste and recycling services. Our customer list is growing and the amount of materials we have helped Peterborough businesses divert from landfill has increased every single month. We have hired more employees and invested in more equipment to keep up with the demand.

David welcomes everyone to visit us at our new location in the Major Bennett Industrial Park. WINNER

MARY CAROLYN HART Halfway through the calendar, and already 2011 stands to be a watershed year for Lazer Graphics as we celebrate recognition and growth. Late 2010 saw principal Mary Carolyn Hart lauded as Business Citizen of the year by the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce for her tireless community service. February brought with it more hardware, this time in the form of an EDCO award for the GPA EDC Strategic Plan. As spring rolled into summer, our creative continued to gather momentum. We’ve experienced a marked increase in branding, advertising and trade show projects, and seen our team go multi-disciplinary with a number of web development projects, vehicle wraps and consulting on a brand application to a client’s office renovation.

ROBERT D. GAUVREAU, CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT ROBERT GAUVREAU

Being recognized by my peers as the winner of the 2010 Entrepreneurial Spirit award was a huge honour for me and my staff. This recognition has increased the profile of my firm within the community. Since receiving the award, my practice has continued to expand and realize unbelievable success. We have continued to grow through the acquisition of a public accounting practice in Port Perry (to serve the Durham market) and have recently committed to acquiring another small office in Peterborough. At the end of 2010 I was very fortunate to add Jeff Lingard, CA to my office as a manager. Jeff has previously completed the in depth tax program which provides him the skills necessary to complete corporate reorganizations, estate and succession planning, and other high level tax services. My practice has evolved from a staff of three to a budgeted staff for 2012 of fifteen. This growth has allowed us to add additional individual skills and offer additional services to better serve our clients’ needs. WINNER

BENEFITmatters by Brian Bulger

Your Group Life Insurance Should Be Just One Part Of Your Life Insurance Coverage If there’s one thing I’m passionate about it’s Life Insurance. One of the reasons for this is because, on average, two to three times per year I have the duty of delivering life claim cheques to the beneficiaries of recently deceased participants of the more than 325 firms that I provide group insurance plans to. This may sound like a rather unpleasant job, but it’s actually quite gratifying to be able to be of some help at such a sorrowful time. I’ve been doing this for more than 25 years and someone made the remark to me a number of years ago: “That I’m the only one who meets with the family with money in hand, whereas all the other key people involved are looking to get paid for their services.” Besides the passing of the insured person, what I find distressing is the fact that, most of the time the deceased person has little or no other life insurance in place and has not made sufficient provisions to enable their family to continue with their

present lifestyle. Some families are left down-right destitute because the deceased person was the main income earner, they had debt and, like many people, they didn’t have an emergency-fund, living paycheque-to-paycheque. It’s therefore not uncommon for people left in this position to have to sell their home and even file for personal bankruptcy; what a horrid position to be left in!

What is the most important thing you have learned in business?

Having a shortfall of life insurance exists with people from all walks of life and all levels of income and, based on my experiences, there’s a high probability that you may be one of them. Most benefit plans today provide a minimum amount of life insurance coverage for their employees, which could be $15,000 to $30,000 or in some cases an amount equal to one year’s income. As you know, in today’s world that’s not a lot of money. And when you consider that the cost for final expenses is $12,000 to $15,000 that doesn’t leave surviving family members with much money to face the future with. Calculating your life insurance requirements involves comparing your debts and other liabilities to your assets. A Life Insurance Broker/Agent will help you make the calculations and explain your options at no cost to you. There are between 40 to 50 leading life insurance companies in Ontario and the differences in premium costs among these companies for the exact same product can be considerable, so I strongly recommend calling a minimum of two Brokers when making inquiries. Also, if you have a spouse, make sure that you’re both fully involved when shopping for your coverage and, lastly, don’t make the mistake of putting it off. We’re all going to bite the biscuit one day; we just don’t know when.

“Be creative, embrace change, surround yourself with talented people.”
