Young Entrepreneurs Ideally Positioned to Grow Peterborough Business his is an exciting time to be involved in business in Peterborough. The city has an amazingly diverse economy. Its historical foundation in industry has provided a stable base upon which to build a very mixed, high tech, production and service economy. The reality is that Peterborough is well positioned for economic growth in the future, and opportunities for young entrepreneurs will only become greater. Richard Florida, University of Toronto, has ranked Peterborough first in Ontario, in a study of 17 communities

(seven from Ontario; three from the rest of Canada; seven from the United States) with populations between 100,000 and 250,000 in ‘Technology: Innovation and High-tech Production.’ He also ranked Peterborough third across the 17 communities in total. (By comparison, Guelph and Kingston finished 11th and 14th, respectively.) This, however, begs the question: How can our young entrepreneurs realize these opportunities?

Let’s look for where the opportunities exist in industry. Outsourcing has led to a very diverse array of small and medium-sized enterprises. Most have carved out a market niche and, in many cases, are in the global marketplace. There is a lot of technology and expertise locally, but there is little connection between them. If we look at all this technology and expertise, then seek out new ways to combine them to either expand existing or enter new markets, I’m sure that we would find many opportunities for economic growth.

This is also true of other sectors – we have what it takes to grow, we just need to figure out how.

... Peterborough is well positioned for economic growth in the future, and opportunities for young entrepreneurs will only become greater. The most obvious reasons for economic growth are the creation of jobs and wealth. However, we need to recognize the ‘elephant in the room’ – lagging productivity. We need to improve if we expect to maintain our standard of living.

matters There are two serious challenges. First, we need new organizations and business practices that can take our existing technologies and expertise and combine them in new ways to grow or enter markets. Second, we need to create a new organization, or organizations, that can facilitate an ‘intergenerational transfer of knowledge.’ The greatest single barrier to economic growth here is the absence of such organizations.

The old ways of doing business will simply not be sufficient to support the potential for future growth. The Young Professionals Group (YPG) has a role: get involved in creating the new organizations that will promote and facilitate growth. As the YPG embarks on its first strategic plan, it must begin defining its role in the community, especially when it comes to organizational innovation. The YPG also has a creative advantage. It can more easily seek new ways of

doing business through innovative collaborations that challenge the status quo, and in doing so, open uncharted routes to growth and prosperity.

ormed in April 1961 as the Peterborough Women’s Chapter of the Canadian Advertising and Sales Association, the Women’s Business Network, now 50 years old and with a membership of over 175 members, has evolved into one of Canada’s oldest and largest networking groups… and that is truly something to celebrate! Women in business are clearly a driving force in our economy and the community. Canadian women entrepreneurs contribute in excess of $18.1 billion to our economy every year and there are now 800,000 women business owners in Canada with the number of women-owned businesses growing 60% faster than those run by men. Business women and entrepreneurs often share similar challenges and aspirations and so it makes perfect sense that a network that promotes

and supports women in business is not only necessary but has been growing successfully in strength and numbers over the past 50 years.

monthly newsletters and, as of 2008, has provided the opportunity to go offsite to visit eight member businesses as part of the “Business Spotlight” series.

With a mandate to promote and support women in business through personal and professional growth opportunities, the WBN offers many member benefits including an excellent line up of speakers, special events, exhibitor booths and tradeshows, ‘table drops’, monthly networking and social opportunities, a business profile on the WBN website, announcements in

WBN members include entrepreneurs, professionals, administrators, writers, consultants, computer specialists, health care providers and many other industry representatives. Many members are principal owners of businesses with 10 or more employees and managers or directors of larger businesses.

In May of this year, the WBN celebrates their 50th anniversary with the first ever Women’s Business Network of Peterborough Gala, Conference and Tradeshow. Women from across Canada gathered together to be recognized, to honour, celebrate, learn and be inspired! Over the past 50 years, courageous business women and entrepreneurs have nurtured and built the network, have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the YWCA and other community projects, have shared their stories, offered support and mentorship and have empowered other women in business. As we move forward it is clear that the growth, energy and leadership of the individual women who collectively make up the WBN will continue to impact each other and the entire community in ways that we can only imagine! YPG – What’s next? The Young Professionals Group is rolling into its fourth year as a Chamber of Commerce networking group for members under 40 years old. Attendance for the monthly event at The Venue averages 30 to 40 members. Guest speakers have brought valuable insight to the group, and the Club Laurus name has officially been changed to Young Professionals Group, also known as YPG. And now committee members are eager to answer the question, “What’s next?” Chair of the YPG Committee, Jason Chessar explains, “YPG has been looking at different ways to increase value to our Chamber’s young professionals. Over the last few months we have asked you, our members, what would benefit you the most?” A survey, with approximately 26 respondents, indicated what members felt they most and least found enjoyable about the group, and what they hope to gain from it in the future. Committee

members then met with students with the Trent Business Students Association and mapped out a strategic plan for the next phase of YPG.

March It is truly amazing how many terrific businesses, institutions and organizations exist in our community that are operating somewhat below the radar in terms of public awareness. The Rhema Christian School falls into that category and genuinely impressed the Chamber members who drove along Parkhill Road East, just past Television Road, to attend the March BAH. Rhema, along with the Canadian Cancer Society, were very welcoming co-hosts who informed us on a number of issues.

The Rhema Christian School provides an opportunity for children to grow from a unique educational experience that goes beyond math, science, history and languages to help build a solid foundation for life. The school is an active community member and will be the site for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on June 3rd and 4th. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality and the opportunity to socialize with our friends and associates.

April Picture being in view of the scenic banks of the Otonabee River. Think about the natural setting of trees, open fields, lush forests, trails, running water and all the beauty and opportunity this offers for recreational activities. Now drop in a fantastic modern sport and recreation facility to complement the natural opportunities and you have the new Trent Community Sport and Recreation Centre at Trent University. Kathryn Verhulst-Rogers and the welcoming staff of the centre provided us with an in-depth tour of the impressive air conditioned facility. We saw a full-sized gymnasium, a 25 metre pool, large change rooms, squash courts, a climbing wall, a fitness centre, dance/fitness rooms, a rowing/paddling tank, and much more.

moBitek Growing up in Peterborough I always felt that it is a big city with a small town feel. I started my company with the mission that computer support should be friendly and come right to your door, without charging ‘premium’ prices. I have been working in my field since May of 2009 when I opened the business at age 16 with a government grant through the GPA EDC. The grant allowed me to use my hands-on knowledge to help others while being my own boss. At age 18, I continue to operate my company while attending Trent University. I have built long lasting relationships with my clients due to my friendly approach to business. By simply treating our customers right and not like a number, we have hundreds of satisfied clients in the Peterborough and surrounding

area and continue to grow thanks to referrals. As the CEO of MobiTek with mobile computer support that comes to you anywhere in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, we provide professional, knowledgeable and friendly computer service at economical prices that just cannot be beat. I have been the Centre Director at Scholars for five years. Initially, I was working part-time and had no idea that this would become my career. I have a B.A. in Geography and Environmental Studies from Trent and a B.Ed. from Queen’s. When my husband and I moved back to Peterborough in 2005, after two years of teaching English in Japan, I was looking for a full-time

teaching job. However, as I became more involved at Scholars I began thinking less and less about classroom teaching. As Centre Director, I still work with students when I am administering assessments or filling in for a teacher, but I also manage and train our staff, meet with parents and classroom teachers, answer sales and inquiry calls, assist with marketing and advertising, and keep the daily operations of the centre running. I enjoy what I do very much and look forward to continuing to play an important role in the growth of this business. 705-742-4152 www.scholarscanada.com

These days, Canadians are looking for enduring relationships with employers, seeking to work for just one or two companies over a lifetime.

Employees are looking for their employers to be partners in their development and in fact, according to the study, career opportunity is the number one reason to remain working for an employer. The potential to grow within an organization is also one of the top reasons to join a company, along with pay, vacation and health benefits.

According to Towers Watson, almost eight out of ten employees (77%) indicated they wanted to remain with their current employer for the long term, with 43% saying they wanted to work for the same company for their entire career, and 34% wanted to work for no more than two or three companies.

Knowing what employees want from their employers can assist you in enticing the best people to join your business, and help you to ensure that your current employees remain with the company.

The move towards long term loyalty should be welcomed by employers, however employees expect that
