Planes, Trains and Automobiles… es, I know the title is just too obvious. It seems strange that a Community as physically self-contained as Peterborough should have transportation as one of its major issues. Whether it’s the Rail Line, with its $300 million promise; the Airport, with its exciting new opportunities; or the Transportation Plan/407 Completion/(gulp)Parkway, with the word “delay” pretty much capturing it all; transportation is indeed a significant matter for the Peterborough Area. The Chamber is involved on many levels, and here is how we see the issues: Planes - There is no question we’ve got this one right! The airport is enjoying a $30 million infrastructure upgrade that will position it as a significant employment opportunity.
Like Flying Colours, the largest employer at the airport, there is tremendous potential for new companies and new jobs in the very near future. This was a difficult deal to put together, but it now serves as a model of what can happen when all three levels of government are on the same page.

Trains - Looking back it’s hard to believe that, for more than two years, there has been a signed agreement between the federal and provincial governments to spend $300 million to upgrade this rail line. Those two years have been spent either studying or arguing about the study. The much maligned Metrolinx Report has effectively derailed the project. However, there is still $300 million on the table and the Chamber is putting its support behind the creation of a registered charitable Not-ForProfit Corporation. The model already exists on Vancouver Island and, we believe, the fit is perfect for Peterborough as well. The benefits include: • A vastly improved freight service which will not only increase the competitiveness and capacity of the existing customers, but attract new contracts as well. • A commuter rail service which will not only take people into Toronto, but bring them out to Peterborough, creating tremendous tourism opportunities. • Passenger Rail also achieves the target of Transit
Oriented Development (TOD), a key component of the Province’s Places to Grow legislation. • Employment. Whether it’s more freight, new freight, more tourists, better commuter connections, it all adds up to one thing – economic activity and jobs. The Chamber Board is playing a lead role in trying to bring all of this together. The money is there, we just need everyone “all aboard”. Automobiles - “Our traffic problems are nothing compared to….” The fact is we don’t live in “….” we live in Peterborough. Our Transportation Plan

update has been delayed “for the next Council” twice. We continue to build subdivisions to the north and jobs to the south. Our growth targets, which inform the Consultants who will update the Transportation Plan, are based on our historic growth and don’t account for the airport, the Innovation Cluster, Commuter Rail, immigration, and the 407. Just say the word “Parkway”, and it’s as if you’ve passed wind at a cocktail party. Getting an ambulance from anywhere north or east of the city to the hospital is life threatening. Growth in Cavan Monaghan could very well accelerate, and our reaction is to try to stop it? A single-tier municipal government is inevitable, whether it’s 10, 20, or 50 years from now, perhaps we should be talking about links, not obstructions.
There is one thing we can all count on. All three levels of government are in debt, and thus there will be a lot less public money available for the foreseeable future. We have to pounce on our transportation infrastructure opportunities right now. We have to be smart and fast.
Indeed, the automobile will continue to be a significant challenge for municipal governments and staff. The Transportation Plan Update has been promised for early in the term of the next Council. It will require a lot of thought and input.

Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act ecently the Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) moved from a paper discussion to a final report ready to be passed into law. The AOD Act which will affect all Ontarians – both persons with disabilities and those who own businesses has been significantly modified during the last review. The biggest change to the Act (after recent public consultations) is the scope of buildings that will now be included in the AOD Act. Initially ALL buildings – both new and existing would have to be fully accessible by 2025. In the current version only new buildings and buildings undergoing significant renovation would have to be fully accessible. Although many businesses would see this as a great financial savings one must keep in mind that if your business is not accessible, and all other businesses in new or recently renovated buildings are accessible, then you stand a very good chance of losing customers. The other consideration to remember is that the existing buildings scope was dropped from the AOD Act in order for it be passed more quickly into law (likely before the end of this year).
Once the Act is approved it is widely believed that it will be included in the revisions in the 2011 Ontario Building Code which governs all new

Endodontists End Your Tooth Pain Consider visiting an endodontist if you experience any of the following: • Sensitivity or pain caused by hot or cold foods • Constant tooth pain with swollen gums and sensitivity to touch • Sharp tooth pain when biting down • Continued sensitivity after a regular dental procedure • Pain or pressure in a tooth previously treated by root canal • Facial pain that may be related to your teeth

revision or not, market pressure will ensure that all businesses will want to be accessible in the near future. It is important to remember that, by being fully accessible, you are making it easier for not only persons in a wheelchair to access your business but also those using a wheeled walker/rollator (and their family and friends who accompany them), and parents using strollers, etc. As the Boomers age there are more people that avoid simple steps, either because of balance issues (and risk of falling), fatigue in climbing stairs, or even low vision problems which makes some stairs dangerous. As a savvy business person it would be prudent to take a good look at how accessible your business is and budget now for changes down the road!

2010 Business Excellence Awards
o
n Wednesday October 20th, we held our 7th Annual Peterborough Business Excellence Awards profiling and highlighting 51 outstanding businesses from our community, along with the Citizen of the Year. As well two students, one from Trent University and one from Fleming College, each received a $1000 Student Business Leadership Bursary, in recognition for their exceptional leadership potential. This exciting awards ceremony was sold out with almost 500 guests in attendance! Teresa Kaszuba, from CHEX TV, was our evening host and Bob Doornenbal, from The Peterborough Examiner, was our MC for the evening. Once again, they both did an outstanding job and the Chamber extends to them our warmest thanks and appreciation! Following this article is a list of all of our 2010 finalists, with all of this year’s awards recipients in bold, as well as all of our Excellence sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. We have also included the Student Business Leadership Bursary winners’ names. For information on the various category criteria, or for more information on the Excellence Awards, please check out our website at www. peterboroughchamber.ca.

Once again, our gracious host, Tom Malakos of Trentwinds, provided a wonderful meal and, as well, the Excellence Committee worked tirelessly to pull together the beautiful ambiance with this year’s theme of “Celebrate your achievement!” The Chamber would like to take this opportunity to thank each of our 2010 Excellence Committee members for the outstanding job they did this year (names listed in alphabetical order):
As well, we thank each of the judges who worked tirelessly reviewing each and every nomination submission, carefully choosing our finalists and winners. We are grateful to everyone who took the time to complete and submit a nomination and sincerely hope that, by going through completion of your nomination, you and your team were truly able to “Celebrate your achievement”!

Chamberevents youngprofessionalsgroup breakfastclub Genevieve Gilbert, Charlotte Video August At the end of a beautiful summer the Chamber’s Young Professionals Group started up again in August with an evening of speed-networking. As always, it was a fun-filled night full with many new contacts and friends being made. In the month of September we were fortunate to have the two Mayoral Candidates in the upcoming Municipal Election, to our meeting for a Q & A. YPG attendees were well informed of both of the Candidates’ platforms and they both bravely answered questions from our young professionals. Ironically, both candidates joked about how they
by Anne Arnold, CSP, Membership Services Manager thought it was funny speaking in a classy bar with the audience quietly sipping their beverages. Every month YPG offers Chamber members under the age of 40 an opportunity to network, share their business information with the group, and gain valuable information from guest speakers. Our meetings offer a unique opportunity for young people to promote their business, so if you or anyone in your business is under 40 send them down to our next meeting! For more information visit the Chamber website, or check out the YPG Facebook page.

September Cora Whittington began the session with an informal survey asking how people are finding new products and services and determined that the majority of those present used referrals, and then online searching. They liked knowing the person or someone who wanted to establish trust and expertise… and they want to find it fast. In order to be found fast, Cora shared three strategies: The first is using the keywords that people use to find your product or service; the second is to have links to and from your site; and the third is fresh content and activity on your site. Cora then shared how Social Media and Blogging can meet all of these strategies, including building trust and expertise with your customers. Cora is a small business coach with Golden Pathways Coaching. For a free consult and workshops call 745-4006 or go to www.onlinepresencemadeeasy.com
August Heather Zak of the United Way of Peterborough & District spoke about the various ways that the United Way will be fundraising to reach the 2010 United Way Campaign Goal of $2,550,000. They do various BBQ’s throughout the year, casual Fridays, as well as a couple of larger fundraising events, which include: Be A Goddess, being held on Wednesday January 26th, 2011 from 7:00 to 10:00pm at Peterborough Square; and the United Way Hockey Challenge, being held on Sunday January 30th, 2011 at the Memorial Centre. Currently, the funds raised throughout Peterborough City and County directly support 33 member agencies and 91 programs and services! Please join us for the November 9th breakfast meeting, when our guest speaker is Lisa Hutchinson of CAA Travel.

October Nexicom is a player in the telecommunications industry and provides telephone service, internet related services, cable TV, home security, and cellular services to Central Ontario communities. Although their head office is located in Millbrook, they have been very active in supporting many organizations and events throughout Peterborough and surrounding areas. Our community is grateful for this support. We had a chance to meet the nice folks from Nexicom at the October BAH, which was hosted at the Kawartha Golf and Country Club. It was also a great opportunity to re-establish contacts with other business personnel since the last BAH in July. We are pleased to see that Nexicom is planning to open a new Peterborough location on Stewart Street in early November. It is encouraging to see a good company, with good personnel, who give back to their community, enjoy success and growth. Thank you to Nexicom for your hospitality and support!

Chamberevents Prosperity Tradeshow 2010
by Patric Marren, Program Chair (Nationwide Barter)
On September 15th there were two exciting events held around the Memorial Centre - the Peterborough Lakers hosted Game 5 of the Mann Cup, and The Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce held its annual Prosperity Tradeshow at the Morrow Building.
there were some fantastic business connections made. The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Amy Simpson and the staff of MicroAge as our event sponsor. We appreciate all your support and look forward to seeing you next year.
Each year the Prosperity Tradeshow seems to get bigger and better! This year was no exception with 114 booths and 16 tables displaying and showcasing member businesses to Chamber and non-Chamber members. As exhibitors we saw an increase in attendance as the Chamber really marketed towards the general public. By all accounts from our exhibitors PETEWATERSPEC.AD:Quark ad template

Chamber Hosts Inaugural 9’N Dine Golf Tournament
by Cathy Martin, Event Coordinator & Marketing Assistant
August 19th marked the date of the Chamber’s Inaugural 9’n Dine Golf Tournament at Keystone Links Golf & Country Club, sponsored by Shaw Computer Systems. Angry afternoon skies cleared up nicely for our shotgun start at 3:30 pm. Fifteen teams set out for a fun filled afternoon of best ball golf, great contests, delicious ribs on the course (thank you Johnny eh’s!) and a chance to `hit the marshmallow’. Golf was followed by a delicious meal provided by Keystone and the opportunity for every golfer to choose from the awesome selection of prizes on our prize table.
The Chamber would like thank our event and contest sponsors, and all the wonderful donors to our golfer goody bags and the prize table. A special thank you to the fantastic 9’N Dine Golf Committee for all of their hard work and for ensuring our inaugural event was the great success that it was! See you at our 9’n Dine in 2011!
