Chunyi Ho

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology

Hi, I am Chunyi Ho, a creative, intuitive and innovative grad student from Syracuse University. I believe there's nothing I can't accomplish as long as I devote myself to it. I came to Syracuse University after winning a one-year full scholarship from the ministry of education of Ta i wa n. F rom this research - based program, I learned how to get broader information and enlightened deeper thinking about design. The experience of studying abroad has brought me a completely different point of view towards my life and architecture, and has influenced me to be brave, think big, always try new things.

Taipei Dahu Children’s Center 09

I want to fly like a bird

Since we were a kid, it has always been easy to experience the felling of running on the land or swimming in the water. But when it comes to the experience of living in the air, the adults will always say “Do not jump on the beds”“Do not climb onto the trees.”

I use air packs as the material of the pavillion, to pack the invisible air. Not only delivers the character of air that is light, and invisible, but also intends to remind people that air pollutionhas no profile, it can be spread as easy as air.

Two shortcut layout test:

Test 2 According to our investigation, the two main entrance will be located at the North-West corner of the site, and South-East corner. Most residents enter this market from the North-West corner, and visitors, relitively, will come to this building from the South-East corner. In order to bring more people into this market, bring out a concept called shortcut. We hope to capture more people who did not plan to buy food to enter by proposing special layout, and adding a lot of small entrance on eash side.

Neihu dump hill caught on fire and was burning for three days before the fire was controlled. The first incinerating plant in Taiwan was established soon after that.

Taipei city launched a new policy to reduce the amount of trash by charging fees with the designated bag. This act cut the amount of trash into half, which is only 2,000 tons per day now.

Although the pressure form trash was eased, the amount of food waste is, however, increased by twice comparing with 10 years ago. The city is planning to transform this retiring incinerating plant into a biomass power plant.

“

Taipei City

Taipei city has three incinerating plants, and the one in Neihu has exceeded the 25 years life span and now facing two options which are retirement or upgrade to other functions.

The site is in Huluzhou industrial area, which is isolated by some natural and artificial barriers on its four sides, including highway, river, metro overpass and a truck bridge. The land has been haunted by these gigantic structures and eventually becomes somewhere no one wants to get close to, although there are some residents live within it.

We collect four different varieties of plastic that are safe for melting, which is PET, PP, HDPE, and LDPE. Different types of plastics will be transported through underground vacuuming systems to the river bank and packed into different bubbles before being discharged into the river. The bubble will collect more waste along the journey to the plastic upcycling factory. As it arrives, we transform plastic wastes into several types of bubbles according to the kind of plastic. Some of the bubbles will be used as the construction component of this growing tower, the more plastic human throw away, the elevation of these towers will increase as well as the quantity of the towers. KA DGIYAQ O PSAPAH, KA QMPAHAN O DARA “Take the forest as home, view the land as life.”

TAROKO There’s a place called Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan, which has the largest marble canyon in the world called “Taroko gorge”. The name of Taroko came from the tribe who lives here, and they live with the faith of “Take the forest as home, view the land as life.” 108

HISTORY The Truku (Romanized as Taroko) people are Indigenous Taiwanese people. Taroko is also the name of the area of Taiwan where the Truku reside. Around the 16th century AD, the Taroko tribe moved from Nantou to the mountainous area in Hualien County. In 1876, the Taroko incident broke out due to the Qing government forcibly invaded the Taroko area. Since then, the tribe was regarded by the Governor as an important enemy. From May to August 1914, the Government of Japan started the Taroko War in order to control the aboriginal forces in Hualien. In the end, the remaining Taroko people were forced to relocate down the foothill by the river and to receive Japanese education.

FOOD

The traditional Taroko people cultivated by the rotation rest method of burning the field for fertilizer after harvesting and then changing to another land for cultivation. The food grown is mainly millet, sweet potatoes, tree beans, and taro. They are very attentive when harvesting millet, no speaking nor fart are allowed, and are demanded to be careful not to exceed others’ fields. The first bunch of millet must be harvested by the priest, otherwise, anyone who eats it will suffer from diarrhea, even the bird is no exception.

WEAVING Weaving is an important traditional skill of the Taroko people. The Taroko women must learn this skill during their growth, though the skills of weaving have gradually faded as time goes by. The traditional Taroko woven fabric uses hemp as the material, and the pattern is mainly diamond-shaped, which symbolizes the “eye of the ancestor”. Weaving skills not only meet the needs of life, but also affirm the role of adults in the past tribal society, and even have a deep connection with the ancestors’ beliefs, which shows the sincere cultural connotation of the Taroko people.

After the harvest of millet on October 15 every year, it is an important season for the Taroko people to hold gratitude ritual to thank the ancestors. At this time of year, the tribes will worship the ancestors with piety, to thank the ancestors for their blessings and the harvest of five grains this year. Before dawn, the main priest led the tribe to the ancestral site, and the chief called out the ancestors and invited their souls to come down and join. The chanting rituals are chanted by everyone, and the ancestors of each family are worshiped separately after the joint ceremony.

ENVIRONMENTAL DISRUPTION

Name Person not present

Sources: newtalk.com cet-taiwan.org

In 1973, Asia cement corp. fraud and forged consent to get the land ownership from the tribe, and jointly with Township Office to cancel the registration of farming rights and occupy the original protected land, causing the residence of 50 households who lived on the plateau were forced to relocate to the foot of the mountain and could no longer set foot on the cultivated land and hunting grounds on which they depended. Whenever a typhoon, torrential rain, or earthquake occurs, the people who are forced to relocate can only beg for fear that God will not let the sliding earth to wash their homes. It has been 40 years of mining. During this period, environmental assessment has never been carried out, nor has it been informed and approved by the clan. On March 14, 2019, the Ministry of Economy again approved the 20-year extension of the mining permit, and Xincheng Mountain with an altitude of 776 meters will have less than 120 meters in the future. The issues of environmentally sensitive areas, administrative discretion, the inadequacy of the current mining law, and the failure to practice the right of indigenous peoples are highlighted again by the investigation report that the Supervisory Institute released. 124

It’s a new era now, physical goods are no longer a promise to fortune. What more precious are irreplicable knowledge, culture, and memories. The strategy of my proposal is not only focusing on master planning but also cares about how to support the local’s living and a way to pass down the culture. From researching this topic, I’m glad to notice that the environmental awareness of the public is rising over time, and hope the tragedy will not happen again. The Land 167
