INTERVIEW BY THE GOLDEN SOUL CLUB. thegoldensoulclub.tumblr.com PANAMA is the newest band to emerge from Sydney’s bubbling live music scene. Their also label Future Classic’s newest signing, and they’ve both got big plans ahead. Led by Jarrah McCleary, who is joined by his old band mate, Cam Edwards (The Dirty Secrets) and a collective of hand-selected local artists to create Australia’s finest new band. The forthcoming Panama EP was produced and mixed in Los Angeles by Eric Broucek of DFA fame (Holy Ghost, Eleanor Friedberger, !!!) over two months. During their recordings, Eric’ friend Jim Orso (VHS or BETA) joined them in the studio on drumming duties, adding a layer to the sound that is as relevant and ‘now’ as it is brimful of ‘80s influence. Panama’s first single, ‘Magic’ is as much soaked in an ‘80s pop sensibility as it is a modern summer anthem for our impending sunshine. We contacted Jarrah to tell us more about this amazing new band, and he happily accepted. We can sense something big is coming.
PANAMA.
INTERVIEW WITH PANAMA. written by THE GOLDEN SOULS CLUB. - What is the first thing you do when you wake up? - I roll over and give my partner a kiss! I’m always the first one up in the morning (though she would dispute this). Coffee is my godsend and helps me focus my thoughts and be self-motivated enough to write music everyday and keep a 9-5 schedule. - Please tell us a bit about the band, how it was created and what is your mission? - Panama currently reside in Sydney, Australia. I started the band whilst I was in Los Angeles working with my producer Eric Broucek on a record at the time. The band right now consists of myself on keys, lead vocals and percussion, Cam on bass and synth, Trevor on percussion and guitar, and Lachlan on drums. Everyone pitches in for vocals. We’re about to add a saxophonist to our bigger shows which we’re super excited about. I guess our mission is to provide good quality music that people can dance to. - What inspires PANAMA? - Believe it or not, the moniker ‘Panama’ is very inspired by film. Also, I find driving incredibly inspirational to me, especially when I have the opportunity to cruise through the outback. I once drove from Perth to Sydney, a total of 2000 miles. The aim of my songwriting is to create moods through melody – it tends to provoke shadows of nosalgia for the listener. Our forthcoming EP, due for release later this year was recorded in the LA summer, so
it’s heavily tinged with the scent of coconut oil, girls rollerblading along the boulevard and one of those static sunsets that make you wish you were somewhere you’d rather be... LA really is the city where dreams are made. - How is the synergy in the composition of your music? - Good question! We combine a lot of traditional elements such as classic pop song structures and instruments, then mould them with more modern experimental sounds. That’s what you should hear (well, if we’re doing it right). Whilst I am primarily the songwriter for the band, we try to adapt the songs to each band member’s abilities to showcase their individual talents. Collaboration is important when it comes to creativity. On this forthcoming EP we invited Jim Orso (VHS or BETA) to help out on some drumming duties. He’s a good friend of Eric’s and it felt right at the time – LA is one of those places where magical things happen because you’re in the right place and with the right people. We also have some incredible artists slated to help out on the next release, which is very exciting. - How would you describe your sound? - Our latest single ‘Magic’ has been described as “as much soaked in an ‘80s pop sensibility as it is a modern summer anthem”. I’d say that this description is pretty reflective of our sound on our debut EP. Hopefully that will evolve and change for the next release, as the evolution of sound 82
is one of the most exciting parts of writing. Who knows what we’ll come up with? - Which bands are your biggest influence? - We are all hugely influenced by a lot of great bands, musicians and producers. My favourite decade really is the 80’s (although I’m sure if you’ve heard Magic you’d probably know that.. Haha) My penchant for all things 80’s has started to seriously affect my wardrobe too - Hello shoulder pads! The EP is influenced by disco, hopeful house music (even some italo-disco), newwave music and classic pop-songwriting. Piano and fender rhodes are a feature of
the way I write. - What are your biggest aspirations? - Right now, I’m working on finding new ways of creating and combining music of the past with the current music scene. Our biggest focus right now is the debut EP and getting our music out there to as many people as possible. The fact that we’ve touched an audience in Argentina is beyond exciting. I do hope that we’re able to come and play some shows over there sometime soon. - You guys got almost 30,000 viewers of ‘Magic’ on YouTube –and thousand more in 84
Vimeo- since it release a few months ago. That is what we call a SUPER BIG star. How do you feel about that? - I feel very proud of it. Thank you. It’s just indicative of all the people who have helped us through the process of releasing our single ‘Magic’. Brendan from Feel Good Lost for a great clip, Eric Broucek for his epic production skills, Monique our manager for her great PR abilities and Future Classic for taking a chance on us.
match made in heaven. Future Classic and Panama are both pretty excited for what we have in store for you guys, we’re looking forward to sharing it with you. - Have you got any pre-show routines/superstitions? - Haha, yes, don’t drink before a show as it will ruin your voice- unfortunately I had to learn that the hard way. I also try to get an early night if I am performing the next night/s as well. It seems that I’m not the rockstar I used to think I was..
- Is there anything you would like to say to your growing fan base? - I would like to say that all the lyrics come from a real place. Eric (our producer) and I tried to keep the songs as honest and minimal as we could. Also, THANK YOU! Considering we’ve only released our first single, we’re so grateful for the people that have shown their support.
- What bands do you listen to? - A lot of disco bands at the moment such as ‘Pleasure’s’ album ‘Give it up’. It was their last album and i think it was their best. I’ve also been listening to ‘Kindess’ which my producer Eric got me in to. Very inventive new music, I love it. I try not to listen to too much new music for the fear that I might copy something unintentionally. It’s important to have a balance of keeping an ear to the ground and staying involved in the music scene but not getting so immersed that you lose your own vision.
- For us some of the greatest bands nowadays come from Australia. Aussieland has a lot to show to the world. What do you think about that? - Definitely! Whilst we’re a country that is so isolated geographically, we’re home to some exceptional musicians/songwriters who seem to be really switched on with what people want to hear. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a part of the Australian music scene with bands like Cut Copy and the Jezabels doing amazing things in the European and US markets. - You just signed with Future Classic, a super cool indie record label. What are your expectations? - I feel we are very lucky to have Future Classic on board. They are a great forwardthinking label with a strong strategy, a killer team and a keen ear for excellent music. We knew almost right away that it was a

The aesthetic and the fashion as a band are… Right now, our drummer Lachy would argue that we’re all about a “fruitful aesthetic”. By coincidence, the band always seems to be wearing some sort of Hawaiian/ floral/Caribbean shirt combination when we’re playing our live shows. Lady Gaga is… in Australia right now strangely enough. She’s incredibly unique and I do respect where she comes from musically and creatively. Unicorns are… Awesome. Same sex marriage…needs to become a reality in Australia. Everyone has the right to choose how they want to live their life. Your favorite book is… Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’. Funnily enough I’ll be recording the next album in San Francisco. Super excited to visit the house where he wrote this classic novel! Your favorite movie is… La Strada- after studying at the Australian Film Television and Radio School this year, I’ve turned into a bit of a film nut. If you haven’t seen it, you should watch it- the soundtrack’s impeccable. Your favorite CD album is… Too many to count. At the moment it’s got to be Kindness’ album ‘World you need a change of mind’. The dude’s got a whole new way of thinking about music production. It’ll knock your socks off!
