TEDDIEDRUM. 64

INTERVIEW BY THE GOLDEN SOUL CLUB. thegoldensoulclub.tumblr.com   Jason & Dijf are the guys behind Teddiedrum, this belgian duo was formed by friends.   The band knows how to captivate the audience with their charming rhyming lyrics, swooning crooning, sweet harmonies and genius acting but overall with their particular essence.   According to Dijf and Jason, it’s the drumsound that dictates the song. Their collection of toys (including the Yamaha DX7, Casio MG500, Commodore 64 and the DG20 MIDI guitar) are stuffed with custom, pre-recorded hits, kicks and homemade synth patches. The guys never disappoint when it comes to working their magic in the studio.   According to Texas chillwave band Neon Indian, who’ve supported Teddiedrum, they have ‘the coolest set-up ever’, and Soulwax were so impressed by the boys’ fresh sound that they invited the pair on their SoulwaX-mas extravaganza.

65

INTERVIEW WITH TEDDIEDRUM. written by THE GOLDEN SOULS CLUB. - Tell us something about your music. - It celebrates the joy of life, adventure and the forces of destruction. Often the beats are layered with field recordings of broken stuff, which reflects the whole morality.

- How did you guys first meet originally? - We’ve known each other since we were about 14 years old. We met on a school trip to Paris, in the back of the bus, telling disgusting stories to impress the sweet persons. It seems like yesterday, maybe because we have evolved so slowly, not unlike the Bristlecone Pine.

- How is the synergy in the composition of the lyrics? - Good! Thanks for asking! It’s a palette of impressions, giving you a general feeling in the beginning, but growing more detailed after hearing it for 438 times

- How old were you when you first started playing music? - Very young, Santa Claus blessed me with a toy guitar. I really liked it a lot but it was in fact rather unplayable. Luckily, when one of my brothers broke it while sitting down to watch the Eurovision Song Contest, I got a real guitar from my parents to console my grief.

- Do you get inspiration from the same place each time, or does it change? - I get most inspiration out of sound. We have a lot of vintage synths and they are our BFF’s. - What has influenced you the most? - Field recordings are rich of emotional texture. Sometimes I record a large metal tube in the middle of nowhere and within that sound lays a whole new song.

- What’s the story behind Teddiedrum? - We like mystery but it has something or nothing to do with intense thinking and the love for strange equipment and controllers, like the Teddiedrum itself. What’s in a name!

- If your band was a cult, then what rules would the members have to live by? - I would start out with some classic cult-stuff and take it from there. I’d have to recruit some female members I guess, no cult has thrived without them. They are truly great! - Which are your favorite tracks at the moment? - I just found it on a blog and I’m crazy about it: Hay Den Voi Em - Giang Ngoc and Django Django - WOR - What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten? - The best advice I ever got was not to listen too much to people’s advice when you are very drunk. - Which is your greatest fear? - To be swallowed by a black hole. - What are your plans for the rest of 2012? - We’ve just finished our first EP so we are looking forward to playing the new songs live. - Who is Lady Gaga? - Just a girl who made it very big. - What’s the name of your favorite book, movie, and CD album? - Book: “The Interrogative Mood”. What a great idea! Movie: The Holy Mountain Album: Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

WRITE A LETTER. WRITTEN BY MARTIN BOERR

72

Since I left Berlin I’ve been trying to write a letter to express the feelings that took over my head but i haven’t found the right words.   Going out the train station, I had a feeling that a part of me was staying in Berlin. So i smoked my last cigarette in Germany and got on my way to Amsterdam. (meaning “A dog barks, a train goes by, im in absolute silence, white bed sheets, and me laid on the bed, in the only way I’m sure nobody ever “is”. The German sun enlightens me with ideas. It is one of those cities that makes you wonder, “Was it worth it?” Was it sad? And I answer myself , “Yes it was, not sad but odd, Beautiful in the essential sense of beauty, made me question many things, the feeling of shelter, it doesn’t bore you, a nice scape, a sanctuary(…)   The train arrived to Amsterdam. I didn’t have much time so I decided to take it easy

and see everything that is in my path. There’s a popular belief that a cloud of drugs and prostitution takes over Amsterdam but in fact the most shocking in this city are its twisted houses without curtains, the scene between its Canals of a man that’s goes out of his “boat-house” for work and his Asian wife with a baby wearing pyjamas waving good-bye.   “I don’t want to go to Anne Frank’s house or pollute myself with a touristic spot, just want to live like a Dutch for two days”, I thought.   At night I walked Jordaan alone, lights and the moon illuminated just what was necessary, through one of the windows I could see a woman cooking with smile on her face, “perhaps its for someone she loves” I wondered, then she saw me and smiled even more widely, I felt I could taste her food.   When I finished my walk I went back to the hotel and took the lift, since I though that the movement of it gave me the best moment to think, a short but intimate time. Just getting in an elevator, if you are alone, if it has security cameras or not you’d know with how much time you count on, choose to banality of the mirror, interior reflections or something out of the ordinary.   In case of travelling with company, id shared a little space with someone strange to it. Having the luck of travelling alone, I didn’t have much time, but my mind could stop for as much time as I wanted, so I did. Everything was clear, words were in front of [continues on page 76] 73

me, speaking and I listened to them.   Got to the 5th floor and I realized that I could find a center, and that’s where I want to emphasize cause its where I can find the aim of the story. So I went to the room and started writing.   (...) -Te extrañaba - me dije. MEANING (…) Smoking a cigarette I walked the streets with a heavy coat I liked to call “the grandpa” (it felt like a grandpa’s beard) a hood covering my wet hair that swam in the air. Then I began to understand everything that surrounded me, things I’ve never understood before. My mind was suddenly so clear, I found myself.   I missed you – I said to myself, - Never go away – I answered. Wandered around the

block until I finished my cigarette. Your left me breathless – I said out loud.     Sometimes, I needed to hear things through my own words for them to have a meaning. I didn’t take long for me to realize that I was walking around aimlessly, making sounds and singing. Think of the song you like the most. I could tell you it have existed since forever, and that it have been waiting an eternity to be captured (…)   What i lost in Berlin I found in Amsterdam, the world’s most beautiful city. With my short letter finished. I continued traveling the Netherlands, in Antwerp you can take the time to enjoy the moment., eat truffles Gossens, see the result of 1600’s front of the Zuid Ferras, building that is now a restaurant that was awarded the Mies Van der Robe prize, or go around the MUHKA (Contemporary art museum of Antwerp), wander the stores of the Antwerp Six (Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries van Noten, Dirk Van Saene y Marina Yee). The small and intimate botanical garden also provides a good place for contemplation and reflection, strategically in a bench under the gigantic magnolias was where I put the final to the letter.   (...)

(…) Until someone saw her floating in the intangible world that happens everyday in front of us, surrounding us, only matters to see them, pay a little attention, that somebody materializes, that somebody could be you, that somebody could be me.
