We are looking forward for the New Era bands that are -and will be- rocking the world and the whole universe spreading super nice tunes to humans and aliens. MONTEVIDEO, a name you may already be familiar with, is the Belgian quartet that has recently released their debut album called Personal Space produced by the almighty Joakim. Throughout Personal Space you can hear influences of old school rockers like David Bowie and Sonic Youth in the slightly sadness-tinged dance pop tracks and Jean Waterlot’s delicate and affected vocals. In a short period of time, the band has been supported by several blogs, music magazines and deejays that have remixed their catchy tunes.

MON
NTEVIDEO. INTERVIEW BY THE GOLDEN SOUL CLUB. thegoldensoulclub.com
INTERVIEW WITH MONTEVIDEO.
written by THE GOLDEN SOUL CLUB. - What were you as kids? Where did you grow up and what are you first and best memories connected with music? - We all grew up in Brussels, in the south of the city which is peaceful and very green. My first souvenir with music is very old, as I grew up in a classical musician family. My first best memories were classical violins concertos... The Tchaikovski violin concerto in particular... - When and how was your band created? - The band was created in 2006 on the ashes of a ska band, at this time we were friends addicted to music trying to have fun and good sensations together making live shows. - Why ‘Montevideo’? Where does the name come from? - It comes from nowhere, we really liked the sound of it, appreciated the fact that it doesn’t refer to any kind of music in particular and the fact that it is easy to pronounce in every languages. Later, we learned that “Montevideo” is also the name of a clinic in Paris which hosts stars in rehab, it can also be an explanation. - What musicians or artists did have a major influence in your life / work? - A lot of artists : for example Mar-
vin Gaye, The Cure, Bowie, Can, Sonic Youth, Chet Baker and more recently bands like The Rapture, Metronomy, Hot Chip or Phoenix inspired us. - Who does what? Does each of you have special obligations in the process of producing a song? - Usually, we first jam together, then record some ideas, some gimmicks. Then we take the recording session home and the second phase begins : Jean and me searching for arrangements, for the perfect structure and of course Jean Searching for a good voice melody and writing lyrics. It can be very fast but it can also takes a lot of time to finish a track. We are not very fast in composing music. - How is the synergy in the composition of the lyrics? - Jean wrote the lyrics alone for this album, there’s a line driving all the lyrics in the 10 tracks, they talk about the relationship between a man and a girl, in a very poetic way, with a dramatic end. - How could you define your style of music? - I don’t know, alternative new krautpop? - What can we expect of the new album? - You can expect to dance on a 76
77
melancholic trip. - So your new album Personal Space – 11 songs in 15 days. How did you guys accomplish that? - We’ve learned from previous experiences that there is actually no need to start recording if you’re not well prepared, magic can happen in the studio sometimes but mostly you need to be as tight as possible and sure of what you’re doing when the band plays live. - What is the best part of giving a really crowded live show? Do you have any routine before you go on stage? - We don’t have any specific routine, our way to calm ourselves down is usually to make stupid jokes and talk of everything but music and the show to come...
78
- What’s the best place to play live? - Hum, difficult question, we made recently a live in an old gothic church downtown, probably one of the best place we never played. - What is your opinion, as a musician, regarding internet? - Internet is an incredible tool for the musicians, you can be listened by billions of people, it (nearly) doesn’t cost nothing to spread your music, musicians usually see it as a blessing, the labels often see it as a curse, as it means the end of the musical physical medium. - Belgians musicians are kicking asses worldwide. What’s the best thing about being Belgian? - Waw, thank you!! The best thing about the Belgian people I think is the fact that they live in a too small
country to withdraw into their shell, so they are very open and curious, and humble too, which are in my opninion important qualities when making music. - What do you do when you are not playing music? - We are DJing, partying, travelling,
seeing live shows... - What is the name of your favorite book, movie, and CD album? - Book: L’herbe rouge by Boris Vian Movie: Mississippi Burning by Alan Parker CD album: Goo by Sonic Youth
