LET'S TALK NUTRITION... Advice from Pet's Delight

01

Question from @kavitakishnanisawlani on Instagram

02

Answer:

Answer:

How can you cure Hotspots?

Hotspots are also known as acute moist dermatitis, and are areas of skin inflammation and bacterial infection. They begin small, and many pet parents might mistake them for an insect bite. A hot spot will worsen and spread quickly, developing into a hot, red, oozing, and painful lesion. They are often caused by your dog itching, licking, or chewing a certain area, resulting in inflammation and bacteria infection. It's important you see your vet straight away if you see a hot spot forming, waiting for them to go away on their own can cause more problems. Your vet will diagnose the condition and be able to tell you the potential causes, helping you to prevent them from happening in the future. Treatment for hot spots will generally include: • • • •

Clipping the hair around the area Cleaning the hot spot with antiseptic solutions (gentle) Oral or topical antibiotics from your vet Applying a cone to stop your dog from irritating the hot spot.

Thankfully, with treatment hot spots usually resolve within 3-7 days.

My dog doesn't eat his food and constantly asks for the food we are eating.

Question from @dashavanese on Instagram

Dogs begging for human food is common, and it's a tricky issue. We know that our furry friends need to eat dog food to get the right nutrition for them to be happy and healthy, so when they refuse their food in favour of ours it can be tempting to give in just to have peace of mind they are at least eating something. The good news is that as long as your dog isn't refusing to eat altogether, it's not likely to be an underlying medical issue, but we would recommend seeing your vet if this changes. If you have suddenly changed your dog's food, it might be that he is struggling with the new texture or flavour. This is why we recommend gradually changing foods over the course of 7-10 days, mixing the old with the new. If this isn't the case, and your pup is turning his nose up at food he used to love, there are some things you can do. Adding a topper (Applaws have some great options) or wet food can switch up the flavour and texture of kibble, making it more exciting for your dog to eat. We would also recommend putting his food down and then immediately sitting down to eat your own meal, so that he is busy with his food whilst you have yours. If this doesn't work, you might have to start eating in different rooms. If you have fed him from your plate in the past, then you might have unintentionally instilled this bad behaviour. In which case, you might need to take on the help of a trusted dog trainer to reset his habits.

Question from @sxxra._xx on Instagram

04

Answer:

Answer:

What should I do with a teething puppy?

What should I do if my dog has diarrhoea?

Question from @sxxra._xx on Instagram

If you've had your dog since he was a puppy you'll understand the struggle of teething. It can be an intense time of around two months, and ends when adult teeth appear at around six months. Most dogs have 42 teeth, which all appear within this timeframe, so you can understand his discomfort. Your puppy will be very uncomfortable during this time, and your job as his parent is to provide something to help soothe sore gums - this way he won't run and find something on his own to chew (which could easily be your sofa). We suggest investing in a Kong, make sure you get the correct size for your pup - not only will it give him something to chew on, but you can stuff it with his favourite treats to keep him busy and distracted for longer. Make sure you supervise him when he's with his toy.

Diarrhoea in dogs isn't uncommon. Here are some of the main causes: 1. Dietary indiscretion: Eating food that has gone off, eating too much, or eating garbage. 2. Change in diet: We always recommend gradually changing your dog's food, adding the new food to the old over the course of 7-10 days to get his stomach used to it. Sudden changes can upset his stomach. 3. Food intolerance. 4. Allergies. 5. Parasites. 6. Consuming a poisonous substance or plant. 7. Swallowing something he shouldn't, e.g. part of a toy. 8. Viral or bacterial infections. 9. Illness such as inflammatory bowel disease. 10. Antibiotics or other medication. 11. Stress. Due to the vast number of potential causes, if your dog is suffering with diarrhoea for more than 24 hours it's best to visit your vet to rule out underlying causes. If none are found, it's best to keep your pet hydrated as much as possible by offering water in small amounts often, if you feel he is healthy enough it is a good idea to withhold his usual food for around 12 hours to let his stomach settle. Then, introduce easy to digest, binder foods such as white rice, yogurt, or boiled potatoes (without skin). If the diarrhoea persists it's best to revisit your vet.

PROTECTING YOUR PUP IN THE HEAT Summer is upon us and our furry friends will be starting to feel the heat. As much as summer is about sun, beach and fun; higher temperatures mean higher risks for our furry companions. Pets do not sweat in the same way humans do. There are serious dangers with overheating and dehydration for our dogs. 06

Here are few things to bear in mind that will help you to keep your dog comfortable and safe during the summertime. Make sure your dog stays hydrated • •

Hydration is key for dogs just as it is for humans. It is important to make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean and cool water. • For your dog walk, always carry a water bottle for your furry companion just like you do for yourself. Tips : You can add ice cubes to the water bowl to help lower the temperature!

Modify your walk times Take walks and exercise your dog in the early morning and late evening when temperatures are cooler and humidity is lower. Tips : You might want to consider cooling vest for your dog!

Limit amount of time outdoors While most dogs like to sunbathe, do not leave your furry friend outside for long and keep him in the shade. Direct sunlight can overheat them and lead to heat stroke.

Keep your pet off hot pavement •

Before you head out for a walk, touch the pavement. If it is too hot for your barefoot, it is too hot for your dog's paws ! The skin on their paws is sensitive and can be burned. • Walk on the grass as much as possible. Tips : You might want to consider dog boots to protect their paws!

Do not shave your dog Groom your dog, it will help keep them cool but do not shave double coated dogs. It keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Use Cooling mat Post walk, offer your dog a cooling mat to lay on. This is a great aid for cooling your dog down!

Your dog cannot tell you when they do not feel well, so watch for signs of overheating. If you think your dog has it, speak to your vet.

Have fun this summer! We would be extremely grateful for your support. Phone: 04 887 8739 Email: info@k9friends.com Opening hours: Saturday to Thursday 9am - 1pm

MEET OUR RAMADAN COMPETITION WINNERS... Over Ramadan we asked our customers to nominate pet lovers who go above and beyond for the community in the UAE. Here are our winners and their stories...

Q. How many pets do you own/foster? Four. Three dogs Neala, Misha and Púca (who is at home in Ireland and was rescued in South Korea) and one cat, Lapa, that I found injured outside my office. He is the official boss of the house! Q. What made you start taking care of pets? I was given my first rescue dog when I was nine and ever since then I have always had one. But since I moved to Dubai, with so many animals in need, that number has grown a lot! Q. What were your main reasons for helping to solve stray issues in the region? The sheer number of animals in need here make it very hard to say no when one of them needs help. Q. What is the biggest challenge you face? Time and money. I would love to support more of the rescue organisations here that do such good work, but with my own pack to care for, I can't do as much as I would like to.

08

Q. What would your top tips be for someone who is trying to rescue/ foster strays? Smother them with love! So many of the strays here are nervous or traumatised from their experiences. But every animal I have taken in has flourished when they realise that they are safe and loved. If you aren't in a position to take an animal in, you can help in other ways such as being a flight buddy for animals being rehomed in other countries, or volunteering some time to socialise or groom dogs at a shelter. For people who haven't had a dog before, fostering before adoption would be my advice. They take a lot of effort and energy, and one of the reasons so many dogs are abandoned here is because often people are surprised by the work involved and sometimes they just can't cope. Owning pets is not for everyone and there is no shame in fostering and then realising that caring for a pet is not something you want to do permanently. Siobhán Blaney (Instsgram: @siobhanblaney)

Q. How many pets do you own/foster?

Q. What is the biggest challenge you face?

When we moved to Dubai from Oman five years ago, we brought one cat with us. From then till today, our furry family has grown so fast. At the moment, I foster 8 cats and 2 kittens, and there's always room for more!

Several pets were abandoned during the pandemic and it was hard trying to find food and shelter for all of them. Pet care is also quite expensive. Cats need a mixture of wet and dry food, annual vaccinations and trips to the vet... it takes a lot of time, effort and money. I'm grateful to organisations like Pet's Delight for all the good work you do, to help us help these innocent creatures.

Q. What made you start taking care of pets? I inherited my love for animals from my mother. I grew up watching her feed and adopt stray cats and it came naturally to me to do the same. From the time I was little, cats have always 'spoken' to me. The kind of love you get from them is so unconditional. I feel so blessed to have them in my life.

Q. What were your main reasons for helping to solve stray issues in the region? There are so many stray cats in the city and their plight is heartrending. In my family, it goes without saying that we never turn away a cat that is hungry or in distress. Many times, they've just appeared at our gate, as if begging for help. Many times, they have been abandoned or hurt; they are so vulnerable and they deserve all the help and love they can get.

Q. What would your top tips be for someone who is trying to rescue/ foster strays? TNR is one of the best ways to help stray cats and I urge more animal lovers to do their bit in this regard. It prevents the loss of so many little lives and is totally worth the cost. Find a good veterinary clinic that shares your concern for strays, it really helps especially in emergencies. And for anyone out there who's looking for a pet - PLEASE ADOPT. All my babies are rescue kitties, and they respond so beautifully to love and care. They really ask for so little and give so much... they make me a better person and make my life complete! Tarana Edwards (Instagram @tarana_edwards)

Can Diet Help Cat Skin Conditions? Our skin is a reflection of our internal health, and the same is true for cats. If your kitty isn’t eating a quality diet and getting the right balance of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, they’re more likely to suffer from skin issues as well as a number of other problems. But which diet is best? Can diet help to relieve symptoms? What nutrients should you be focusing on? To help you navigate the complex world of cat skin conditions, below we explore some of the most common issues and offer insight into the role diet plays in nourishing your cat’s skin from the inside out.

WHAT HEALTHY SKIN LOOKS LIKE The condition of your cat's skin and coat are good indicators of their overall health. Here’s what you should be looking for: •

10

A healthy coat is shiny and smooth, not dull, coarse or brittle. There shouldn't be any visible patches of bald skin, excessive shedding, or signs of excessive licking, scratching or biting. Healthy skin is supple and clear of rashes or red, irritated skin. It shouldn't be greasy, flaky, bumpy or patchy.

CAT SKIN PROBLEMS There are a number of reasons why your cat’s skin or coat might be looking less than pristine. Let’s take a look at some common symptoms, and match them up with potential causes.

While every cat is different, and there are sometimes various causes behind a cat’s skin condition, nutrition is the ‘cornerstone of health’ for a reason: the quality of your cat’s diet can severely impact their skin and coat. Please note changes in your cat’s skin and coat can also indicate bigger medical problems - if you’re ever unsure, it’s a good idea to consult your vet.

THE ROLE OF DIET IN SKIN HEALTH If you’re ever outdoors with your cat, environmental damage like sunburn or grass sensitivities may be inevitable, but you can control the food they’re eating. As your feline friend’s pet guardian, you have the power to ensure they’re getting all the nutrients they need to build and maintain a healthy coat and skin! The best diet for the job? It’s not a specialized ‘skin diet’, it’s the food your cat was designed to eat - a raw or raw alternative diet like ZIWI Peak. Cats are obligate carnivores. They can’t utilize plant proteins as efficiently as animal proteins, which is an issue if your cat is eating kibble because these foods are often packed with highly processed fillers such as grains, cereals, and potatoes (and very little meat). These ingredients can’t be efficiently utilized by a carnivore’s digestive system, leading to various health issues such as itchy skin and ears, obesity, IBD/IBS and allergies.

Zinc, copper and vitamin A: vitamins and minerals also play a big role in your cat’s skin. Meat and organs, found in all ZIWI Peak recipes, are great sources of zinc (which supports cell development and hair growth), vitamin A (helps to repair skin damage) and copper (maintains hair color and helps your cat grow a thick, luscious coat).

MAKING THE SWITCH Switching to a biologically-appropriate diet full of skinloving nutrients is one of the best things you can do for your pet’s health - it will help boost your pet’s natural resistance to environmental sensitivities, as well as reduce allergens going into their body. It’s a win win! If your cat has sensitive skin in any way, they’re in safe hands with ZIWI Peak. No cheap fillers or meat by-products, just 96% meat, broth, seafood and organs - designed to match your cat’s biological needs. Although pet health and wellness can seem overwhelming at times, remember the optimal diet is simple: it’s the diet they were designed to eat. It doesn't matter whether you choose air-dried food, wet food or a mixture of both - if you couple quality food with weight management, regular brushing, and regular flea treatments, your cat’s skin and coat should look and feel its most beautiful.

Processed filler ingredients can also lead to a dull, weak coat because the ‘building blocks’ of cat hair are the amino acids that come from the breakdown of the proteins the cat ingests. These proteins are meant to be from an animal source, not a plant source.

The key takeaways here? 1.

Without enough quality meat-based protein in their diet, your cat will struggle to maintain a healthy coat because the quality of their furry ‘building blocks’ is inadequate. 2. If they’re eating too many processed filler products and grains, their tummy and skin are not going to be happy.

SKIN-LOVING NUTRIENTS Now you know why a high-meat diet is so important, let’s take a look at some of the key nutrients it offers and the issues it can help with. •

Omega-3 fatty acids: these powerful nutrients are widely recognised to provide anti-inflammatory properties and improve skin health and coat condition. All ZIWI Peak recipes contain 3% whole New Zealand Green Mussel, a good source of omega-3 fatty acids (try Mackerel & Lamb which contains the highest levels out of all our recipes). Kelp: we include this superfood in our recipes as it helps to heal dry and flaky skin. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Our delicious recipes are made for all lifestages, which means that kittens can enjoy our diet all the way through to their twilight years. Canagan contains a very high meat content, and most of our range (with the exception of Senior/Light) have sufficient levels of nutrition to maintain a kitten’s growth. We believe in feeding our companions as they would in their natural environment – the wild; if we think of a cat’s ancestral diet, kittens and adults would have fed on the same food; just in different quantities. With Canagan, these principles remain the same.

16

The protein and fat levels in Canagan are much higher than those found in most carbohydrate packed adult dry foods, or even kitten foods and the nutrient levels in our diets are more than sufficient for our young companions; the calcium and phosphorus levels are also well suited to the development of kittens – and all of the nutritional requirements we have just mentioned, are met with our diets.

What are hairballs and how do you prevent them? If you've had cats for a while, you will be fully aware of hairballs. If you're a new cat parent, you might be wondering how your cat gets hairballs, and what you can do to help prevent them. We have to admit, hairballs are one of the few downfalls of being a cat owner. Let's face it, we detest picking up the slimy clumps of matted fur nearly as much as our poor kitties dislike creating them. Luckily, the majority of the time hairballs are harmless. Your cat picks up dead fur on their tongue whilst they groom, and it gets knotted in their stomach until they vomit, overall it's not a pleasant experience, but it's common and usually they'll be back to themselves after they vomit.

Some of the easiest ways to prevent hairballs: Regular grooming: daily grooming of your cat (particularly if they have long fur) will remove excess hair and reduce the amount that your cat will swallow. Hydration: it's much easier for your cat's digestive system to work and remove fur in their stomach if they are hydrated. Hydration will aid digestion encouraging the fur to pass naturally through their bodies without building into a hairball. Feed quality dry food: your kitty will build up less fur in her tummy if she is fed a nutritionally-dense dry food which contains the appropriate levels of fibre. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Fish4dogs offer great food and treats that not only are tasty but will also help you manage your dog's weight. Around 40% of dogs in the UK alone are suffering from obesity. Obesity is an important issue and can lead to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and other mobility problems.

We like to promote sensible feeding and please remember our feeding guidelines are a guide, and how much food your dogs needs will vary depending on factors including their breed, activity level and age.

We all like to treat our dogs, and there is nothing wrong with that. But we do have to take care that their overall calorie consumption, including treats, isn’t more than they need.

Feeding Guides Take a look at our feeding guides to give you insight into how much food you should be giving your dog.

Weight Control Food The calorie levels of most Fish4Dogs foods are average, however, we do offer a complete food that has lower protein and fat levels making it a great option for a weight control diet. 18

MORE BENEFITS OF FEEDING FISH

Are you looking to get fit this summer? Whether you want to improve your overall fitness, tone your body, or just burn off some calories, your dog might be the answer. Dogs make great workout buddies, they help you keep a positive attitude, have fun during workouts, and the best part - you get cuddles at the end! If you’re not sure about how to get started, try these simple workouts with your pup:

Relax with Dog Yoga Yoga or Doga (Dog Yoga) is a low-intensity exercise that offers many health benefits, including improved strength and flexibility. It helps create a strong bond between you and your pooch and it’s a great way to help stretch and relax. Try yoga with your pup within the comfort of your home, and start off with simple poses like Downward facing dog, Chaturanga, Heart to Hound Mudra, Puppy Paw Mudra, Savasana and the Chair Pose.

Go for a Swim Swimming will help you and your pup build endurance, muscle, and cardiovascular fitness. On a hot day, your dog will happily jump in the water with you, while you do laps. However, if you want to work your dog into the routine, you can swim a lap and call your dog to come to you. We recommend a dog life jacket like our Ruffwear Float Coat is worn during all water exercises.

Dance it Out We’d bet that you’ve probably done this one already...But did you know dancing together is a great way for you both to improve your aerobic fitness and muscle tone? Start forming a routine to your favourite music by working with the tricks your dog already knows (commands like sit, return, shake, roll over, etc.) before introducing new ones.

Play a game of fetch Engage in Agility training If you are looking for an intense workout for you and your dog, agility training is the answer. While your pup will be running through tunnels and jumping over bars, you will have to keep up with him and issue commands along the way. You will have to train your dog on how to interact with each obstacle which is a workout in itself.

Does your pup love to play fetch? Then you probably already spend hours a week throwing a ball for your pup. With a little modification, you can turn a game of fetch into the perfect workout. Instead of just throwing a ball, attempt to do a lunge or some crunches while you are at it. Using a ball launcher like our Chuckit Pro or Sport can help throw the ball quite far, so you can fit in more exercises before your dog comes racing back. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

OUR STORY

Humble beginnings, Canadian roots

1979

Reinhard Muhlenfeld began producing dog food in his small but thriving feed mill in Alberta, Canada. With second-hand equipment and a single bagging unit, Champion made its first dog foods, which were sold to local farming and ranching communities.

1985

Named for its home in Alberta, Canada, and grounded in Reinhard's belief in supporting the local economy, the ACANA brand was created with a strong focus on fresh, quality ingredients from the region. Champion quickly became recognized by Pet Lovers as an innovator in pet speciality foods.

1990

In 1990, we opened our first Kitchen in the nearby town of Morinville, Alberta, providing the scale we needed to enter the pet speciality market as a leader.

2005

Reinhard's son Peter, and wife Yona, had a beloved Dachshund named Lucky. They wanted to find the best diet for him, but most pet food companies back then focused on cheap ingredients and marketing rather than crafting great tasting, healthy pet food options.

Peter's desire to create a diet that best allowed Lucky to eat the way nature intended led to the development of our Biologically Appropriate nutritional philosophy, inspiring the creation of our ORIJEN brand. Built on animal-based, protein-rich foods for dogs and cats, the Biologically Appropriate philosophy revolutionized the pet food industry.

2011

In 2011, we demonstrated our commitment to innovation when we bought a Kitchen where we could make new ORIJEN freeze-fried food and treats.

2016

Located in the rich, fertile farmland of Kentucky, our DogStar Kitchen opened in 2016. Built to our own industry-leading standards and to handle the large quantities of fresh and raw meats our foods are known for, DogStar has won significant awards in the pet food industry. With the highest food safety achievements including the 2017 Global Food Safety Initiative Award, DogStar reflects our commitment to be Trusted by Pet Lovers Everywhere. Our Research & Innovation Centre also opened in 2016 and is home to our team of highly qualified scientists and nutritionists. Pet Lovers themselves, they continuously advance our award-winning foods and create new recipes that provide their pets and yours with the absolute best food available.

2020

Our new NorthStar Kitchen, widely recognised as the most advanced pet food facility in the world, helps us meet the global demand for ORIJEN and ACANA brands. Situated among the rich farmlands of Alberta, NorthStar Kitchen gives us access to an abundance of fresh, trusted ingredients.

OUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY

We pioneered Biologically Appropriate, which means our recipes are crafted with purpose and reflect our commitment to mirror the diet nature and evolution intended dogs and cats to eat. Fresh or raw meat, poultry or fish are always the lead ingredients in ORIJEN® and ACANA® recipes to provide pets with peak nutrition, optimal nourishment and ultimate flavor. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

How to teach your dog his name

New puppies, or adopted adult dogs with new names, need a lot of training to settle into your home comfortably. A key part of training is them answering to their name.

3. Once you've got him answering to his name, start to make it a little more challenging. Move across the room, or into another room, and shout his name. Always reward with a positive 'yes' or 'good' and a treat.

Start by associating his name with something good Positive reinforcement training will teach him how to respond to his name by associating it with something good. Grab a few small, soft treats that your dog can chew quickly, and maybe have a clicker handy. In a quiet space in your home, follow the below steps: 1. When your dog isn't looking at you, say his name in a bright and happy tone, when he turns around, mark it with a clicker or a kind word like 'yes' or 'good' and give him a treat. Repeat throughout the day. 2. If you're struggling to get your furry friend to respond, move to a smaller and less distracting area, or try changing the treat to something he might prefer.

4. Consistency is key, you want to reinforce this behaviour many times, and then it will become an automatic reaction.

Avoid negative associations Creating a negative association to your dog's name, e.g. shouting when he doesn't respond, will instill fear. Also, shouting his name at him when he is naughty, will make him scared of the sound of his own name.

Symply the best for your pet Reviews from Symply lovers!

Well... if mum is have a mini roast - then so am I (with Symply)!

Poppy is excited to try her new Chicken diet! #delicious

Here's Teddy and Honey, they are brother and sister and their favourite food is anything in the Symply range!

Symply have a new logo and it's a Spanna! I've eaten this food since I was 12 years old and always get excited as I never know what flavour I'm going to get!

I just wanted to congratulate you on an amazing product! Having tried several dry foods over the last six months trying to find something that suited my labrador puppy, Harvey, I came across Symply Puppy Food and we haven't looked back since... we are constantly being asked what we give him for his coat as it is so glossy. It’s great to see a product that actually does what it claims and is made in the UK.

Barnie has been on Symply Light/Senior for nearly 4 months. His weight then was 41kg; he now weighs 38kg. He is full of energy and his coat is brilliant and the problem we had with his ears caused by yeast content in his previous diet has almost gone. I enclose a photo of Barnie, taken on his second birthday. Many thanks to Symply Dog Food.

I

t is summer! Now this is something that would make me very excited when I said that out loud in Europe. However, in The Middle East, not so much. But that doesn’t mean I want to lock myself up at home for the next few months. I still want to go out in my time off and that time I also want to spent with my dog. Luckily there are a few restaurants in Dubai that allow dogs inside. In the years I’ve been sharing my videos about dog friendly places in The UAE, I came across many more restaurants that allowed dogs inside. But unfortunately, there are a few restaurants that have decided to change their policy. A real shame if you ask me. But I’m still very happy to tell you about one of my latest findings; The XVA Café in Al Fahidi Neighborhood. This café at the historical art hotel XVA can be found in the oldest community in Dubai. Before known as Al Bastakiya, the Al Fahidi Neighborhood is the place where you can find the overall feeling of old Dubai. The café at this amazing hotel offers a range of Middle Eastern inspired vegetarian options that are served in their shaded courtyards where dogs are welcome. 26

The chirping of the birds and the rustle of the leaves makes you feel comfortable from the moment you step inside this beautiful café. Not only will you be able to find art in their galley, you can find several art pieces all around the hotel and café. There is a relaxed atmosphere which makes this experience even more enjoyable. Unfortunately, apart from this hotel, the Al Fahidi Neighborhood is not dog friendly. So security will ask you to walk straight to the hotel and not roam around. But if you’re staying over or would like to enjoy a walk before or after your visit to the XVA cafe, you can have a stroll alongside the Creek.

You can find Doggie adventures in Dubai on Instagram and Facebook where we show you all dog friendly places in Dubai and the rest of the UAE like restaurants, parks, beaches, activities, events and even staycations.
